ALCS Game 4: Yankees at Angels (Part III)

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Oct 20, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

UPDATE, 10:20 p.m.: Two outs in the sixth, Yanks up 5-1 and we’re into thread No. 3.

UPDATE, 10:30 p.m.: This just got hairy for Sabathia in a hurry. A tough check-swing call on ball four to Hunter followed by a single to right from Guerrero. Suddenly it’s two-on, none out.

UPDATE, 10:35 p.m.: Posada is having a rough night. He started to run off the field after Rivera bounced into a double play, obviously thinking there were three outs. Only a heads-up play by A-Rod to sprint and cover home kept Torii Hunter from trying to sneak down the baseline and pick up a cheap run.

UPDATE, 10:37 p.m.: And CC gets a lineout from Kendrick to end the inning. He’s through six, has a four-run lead and has thrown 80 pitches. The Yankees would love it if he could take it all the way to Mariano.

UPDATE, 10:54 p.m.: Another 1-2-3 for Sabathia in only nine pitches. He’s been outstanding and the Yankees are three outs away from Rivera.

UPDATE, 11:02 p.m.: For a pinch-runner, Gardner sure does get thrown out a lot. That was a great throw by Napoli. Right on the money.

UPDATE, 11:09 p.m.: That’s Damon’s second homer in as many days and ninth career postseason homer. He absolutely murdered it to left field and it’s 7-1 now. Lots of red shirts heading toward the exits.

UPDATE, 11:17 p.m.: That’s 101 pitches and eight innings for Sabathia. You want to talk about an ace showing up? You saw it tonight.

UPDATE, 11:37 p.m.: Chad Gaudin comes in to finish it off and the Yankees are one win away from the World Series.

12 outs…only 63 pitches for Sabathia…I would let him go into the 90′s no more…

I hope that CC has a 1,2,3 inning.

  31. YankeesLuv October 20th, 2009 at 10:24 pm

  32. Enough Pitching Changes October 20th, 2009 at 10:24 pm

    —————

There will always be guys that will never root for A-Rod. There are people out there who seem to think that rooting for A-Rod is somehow going against Jeter. I don’t think A-Rod will ever satisfy everyone, but I think he has realized that if he just plays the game right, good things will happen and fall into place.

  35. vb03 October 20th, 2009 at 10:25 pm

McCarver just called A-Rod “Posada”. The umpires AND the announcers need a major overhaul.

  36. SJ44 October 20th, 2009 at 10:25 pm

They need a low pitch, shutdown inning from CC here.

Can’t give the Angels, or the umpires, a chance to get back in the game.

July 11, we led 4-0, Angels won.

October 19, we led 3-0, Angels won.
October 20, we lead 5-0, Angels win?

I remember all the talk on WEEI that until Arod produced in October he would never be considered a great player.

Well HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!

    Or quoting Arod, HA!

  40. Shay October 20th, 2009 at 10:25 pm

I really thing McCarver’s starting to lose it as an announcer, he’s making 4 or 5 mistakes a game, and he doesn’t seem to know the yankees that well this year.

SJ expressed reservations about the brutality that could be the Postseason umpiring…..It’s been in the crapper ever since Selig took over the umpires….Under Richie Phillips it was significantly better…This is below HS standards when you consider all the blown calls

Trevor, there aren’t many pitchers like CC……..I don’t think comparisons are necessary. I defend AJ because (a) I think he often gets a bad rap and (b) he’s a very good guy and a great teammate. AJ’s a good pitcher – maybe people are harder on him because he’s got so much ability, but I don’t think that’s fair. He’s done a good job so far this post-season – I couldn’t ask for more, especially as this is his first time on the big stage.

    http://www.cantstopthebleeding.com/?p=2444

It actually happened in July 2005.

“With L.A.’s Juan Rivera batting in the second yesterday, Kay brought up the incident in spring training of 2002 when, he said, Juan Rivera was caught stealing a glove out of Derek Jeter’s locker and selling it to a Seattle memorabilia dealer.

Murcer chimed in by calling it one of the “unforgivable sins” in baseball, and when Rivera grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, Kay said, “There’s a little payback for Jeter.”

A few minutes later, with the Angels still batting, a highly humbled Kay admitted he had goofed.

“I just made a terrible mistake, Bobby,” Kay said. “It’s Ruben Rivera who took the glove, not Juan. Ruben was the guy who took it, I apologize to Juan, that’s awful. I just got my Riveras all mixed up.”

    Murcer said nothing.”

anyone saying Gardner was safe or it was close is missing the point. on 2-0 count with a guy who is not quick to the plate, it shouldn’t even be close. major fail by gardner.

  537. Mac Daddy October 20th, 2009 at 11:05 pm

gardner can no longer have free reign to run when he wants…he obviously doesnt comprehend pitch count and that there are bad times to try and steal….2-0 count is one of those times!

  538. JG29 October 20th, 2009 at 11:05 pm

Actually, the more embarrassing performance is being given by you. You are impersonating someone who told us earlier today that he would not be on during the game. We know you are not SJ44. How about using your own name? Maybe then we’d be interested in what you had to say.

  556. Motive October 20th, 2009 at 11:06 pm

Well, maybe Melky doesn’t walk without Gardner on base. Maybe he grounds into a DP with Swisher running at first base.

Too many variables too indict Gardner for an 0-2 performance.

The Yankees may not have gotten a lot of hits with RISP this series (up til now) but they have been very successful at getting the starters out early and that has severely taxed the Angel bullpen and the Yankees should reap rewards from hear on in. As long as they can get some long ABs against Lackey on Thursday they should be able to score runs on their bullpen again.

one thing i’m puzzled about with posada with losing track of outs.

whenever i was catching a game and wasn’t sure, i’d just ask the guy behind me, the ump.

i mean , he’s right there. he’s not going to lie or show you up for losing track.

it’s not like the center fielder having to yell to an umpire or fellow teammate which is embarrassing.

plus the catcher always yells out the outs to everyone.

    at least i always did.

i would seriously give posada a brain scan, and i’m not being sarcastic.

  915. BJ Buckets October 20th, 2009 at 11:27 pm

2 things – it’d be kind of ironic if gaudin “closes” this game out for cc after the initial indecision about whether or not the yanks would have to use a 4th starter

also, i say the only way the mvp doesn’t go to cc is if alex commits a crucial error or goes 0-4 on thursday and any necessary games. otherwise, i wouldn’t be shocked if co-mvps were handed out

We still have the 9th, but the Angels were one pitch away in the bottom of the sixth yesterday from being out of it.

    I really like this team.

Lackey versus AJ on Thursday will be very interesting. Accuscore has it 57-43 Angels in 10,000 simulations, but those simulations don’t factor in that it’s an elimination game.

Maybe Posada is the DH? This way he can keep better track of the outs? Keep Matsui on the bench if he’s needed.

I’m pretty sure that the real SJ44 was getting on Girardi for having Gaudin as the only remaining pitcher the two games before this one because Gaudin “wouldn’t be able to pitch” since he hadn’t pitched for a while.

    Wrong again SJ!

am i the only one that noticed that Tex seemed as if he thought there were 3 outs after that DP? he seemed like he was jogging in towards the dug-out after making the catch at first. it made me wonder if there were in fact 3 outs.

not that it gets posada off the hook for not knowing the # of outs, but it could have swayed his judgement.
