And so the Mattingly stories begin

Chad Jennings
October
20

Not so long ago, it seemed Don Mattingly might be next in line to manage the Yankees. Now his name is being linked to the Cleveland Indians.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer has reported that Mattingly is among those who has interviewed for the Indians job. The Boston Globe has talked to Mattingly about the possibility of looking for a job outside of Los Angeles, where he’s currently the Dodgers hitting coach.

“I don’t want to go anywhere that doesn’t want to win,” Mattingly told the Globe. “I’ve been around this game now long enough and played for and coached some very good teams, so you want a team that’s on the verge of making the playoffs. It doesn’t mean you wouldn’t go manage a young club that’s building toward that. As long as the organization wants to get there, I’d be fine with that.”

I thought Donnie was next in line after Torre retired in LA?

  2. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Montero Fanaticus Primus

I wish Mattingly the best wherever he ends up.

  3. 100 pitches of fun...

I really hope that Tex can start being himself starting tonight. They absolutely need him to start hitting or at least just having better at bats. He is a gigantic key to getting this team 2 more wins in this series. He needs to calm down, he looks like he wants to hit a grand slam in every at bat. I have never seen him chase more pitches than he has in this series.

  4. crawdaddy

Right now, I bet a majority of Yankee fans would want Mattingly to replace Girardi.;)

I’m just kidding, but I’m sure some do feel that way right now.

  5. Bronx Jeers

I’d love to see Donnie get a managing job.

Except for with The Mets. Or the Sox.

It is NOW time to play postseason “Guess the Line Up”

Please post your line ups to me here (or any new threads) with players AND POSITIONS. I am done chasing people who don’t post positions so its up to you.

No revisions allowed. Be sure about what you are posting.

I will accept entries until it gets leaked online or 4:30. Whichever comes first. ABSOLUTELY no late submissions will be accepted.

    I sure miss Mattingly

If it turns out to be a Yankee/Dodger World Series (now not looking as likely), seeing him in that uniform would make me sick

    Hi Erica,

    Here is my guess:

    Derek. SS
    Damon. LF
    Tex. 1B
    Alex. 3B
    Matsui DH
    Jorge. C
    Robbie 2B
    Swisher RF
    Melky. CF

    Thanks.

still gotta go w/ the A line up:

    SS the Captain
    LF E’s PBF
    1B Tex
    3B the new Mr October
    DH Sui
    C Posada
    2B Cano
    RF Swishy
    CF Melky

I like the suggestions of putting Posada in front of Matsui, but I don’t think Girardi will do it.

  11. vinny-b (thankful to have Girardi in charge)

let Mattingly go to the Indians

long as it isn’t the yankees

    1B Teixeira
    3B Alex
    2B Cano
    C Posada
    RF Swisher
    LF Melky
    CF Gardner

  13. Ken

Torree has said he will leave next year after his contract ends in LA thus opening a spot for Mattingly. If I was done Id wait it out a year and manage in LA. WHo the heck would pass up the Dodgers for the Indians ??? LA is a marquee franchise. Plus with Jerry Manuel’s contract up next year in NY, I wouldnt be surprised to hear Mattinglys name come up for that job in ‘11.

  14. bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes

    100 pitches,

Per your post in last thread: Melky is a .360/.385 career hitter vs. Game 5 starter Lackey, with an .825 OPS. Gardner is not replacing him.

  15. Giuseppe Franco

Thank you to everyone for your kind thoughts. They are very much appreciated.

However, it wasn’t my intention to turn this thread into a sympathy card. It was just such a freakish thing that I had to share it.

I’ll eventually get through this but my situation doesn’t take away an ounce of passion I have for this team and their current postseason run.

I yelled loud enough to wake up the entire ICU wing here when A-Rod hit that huge dinger against Nathan. The man is on a mission and it gave me chills.

Anyways, thank you again for all the kind thoughts.

Just six wins away from #27.

I’m so nervous about tonight’s game. I feel ill :(

Ever since ‘04 I’ve been susceptible to losing faith very quickly. Losing last night effected my whole mood. What we ALL need is for the Yankees to take an early commanding lead in the game tonight. My goodness, how many tight games are we going to play?!

  18. vinny-b (thankful to have Girardi in charge)

    Tex 1B
    Arod 3B
    Matsui DH
    Posada C
    Cano 2B
    Swish RF
    Melky CF

I was tempted to go with Swisher ahead of Cano again, cause I think Joe likes doing that against lefties, but with the way both of them are hitting I don’t think it matters who hits before who. So I’m gonna say he sticks with Cano batting 7th. And no Gardner against the lefty, plus I don’t think he has enough plate appearances as of late to put up quality at-bats.

If the Yankees dont win the WS this year I wonder if theres any chance they’ll dump Girardi and make a run at Donnie. Im not a big Girardi fan and although Cashman supposedly loves him, I find Girardi very stiff in interviews and someone who “over-manages”. My guess is its only 30% chance that they fire Girardi this year but with all the pressure on the Yankees if they dont win it all, I think they have to be open to all possibilities including Donnie Baseball. Id love to see Donnie back in the captain’s seat.

“Thought I saw on ESPN News that Bobby Valentine is the leading candidate for the job. But good luck to Donnie.”

Cleveland Plain Dealer had indicated Valetine, former Tribe 3b Travis Fryman, and one other guy (who was not Mattingly) were the three “finalists”.

  42. Laura - Don't call him A-Rod. His new nickname is "Alex the late"!

Donnie should wait for Torre to retire and take the LAD job. CLE has too many issues. They are a few years away from winning.

  43. Ken

    M,
I never endorsed hiring Girardi. My impression is the players arent crazy about him either. If Mattingly is out there, I wouldnt be against replacing Girardi with Donnie. If they win it all, its a moot point. You cant fire a manager who just won a WS but if they dont, I think its something worthy of debate at least.

Lots of evidence to contradict your thoughts there. But I’ll leave it be. You’ve been pining for Torre, even as an opponent. You queried if anyone else is disappointed that Torre won’t make it?

I think most of us are worried about the Yankees making it. And most of the ladies would like it to not be the Dodgers because Torre would become the story rather than baseball.

You might be in the minority on wanting the Dodgers as a WS opponent.

I am not trying to be rude or a jerk. I am not a kid sitting at home bored. I am at work with a job to do and I run this game because its fun for everyone. I keep strict rules because it makes it much easier for me to keep running this game. When it becomes too difficult, I have to stop and then everyone else who really likes it loses out.

I said numerous times in every GTLU post to post positions. 99% of the people do. The ones who don’t frustrate me because then I have to take the time to respond. And if I have an incomplete line up that would have been right, I feel bad.

I can’t believe how quickly some have turned on Girardi. I realize there are those who never supported him, and now they see the chance to point to a particular incident (the tipping point in their eyes, the straw that broke the camel’s back) to justify their total dislike of him as a manager.

This year, the Yankees, according to these people, have won 103 games IN SPITE OF Joe Girardi. But last year, they missed the playoffs BECAUSE OF Joe Girardi.

Girardi’s not perfect; no manager is. And his success is directly linked to his players’ ability to execute and perform at a high level on a consistent basis. There is so much to the job we do not see. Yet we stand in judgment.

I, for one, hope the Yankees reign victorious. I hope the 25 men on his team (who someone said he’s sure the players don’t like or respect), attack him with a banana cream pie.

Some decisions will work, some will not. Sometimes the drive to make changes is there; sometimes the drive is to let things ride. Sometimes you’re right; sometimes you’re wrong. Seems to me, the guy’s been right more often than wrong this season. Instead of lambasting him, can’t we show support?

I’m not suggesting we all of a sudden go along that the decision to lift Robertson was a good one. It was a head-scratcher. But the rest of it?

“Peter Pascarelli from ESPN said that some of the “veterans” told him off the record that they thought that Girardi over-managed last night. So I guess it’s not just us.”

And these are the kind of stories that make me want to puke. Easy to attribute things to people by using a generic tag, isn’t it? Well I’ve always been from the Show Me state. I don’t believe anything from a “source” without that “source” being named. Far too easy for anyone so inclined to make up things just to support their own case. Do I believe ESPN would do such a thing? You betcha. Do I believe that ESPN would like nothing more than for the Yankees to go down in flames and would like to try to start a little morale war for the Yankees? You betcha.

I seem to remember Selena Roberts using a lot of unnamed sources for her heap of crap too.

Not to mention Girardi has somehow managed the team to 5 post season wins. Not to mention that many of his players have said he is the best manager they have played for (Tex and swish, just off the top of my head).

GF – Praying for your speedy recovery.

I can’t believe how nervous I am about a game 4 where we are up 2-1 and will definitely be returning home. I personally attribute this feeling to the collapse of 2004. With Lackey going in game 5, and the way the Angels played us at home, this sure feels like a must win game.

No, it’s just a simple thing to either read instructions or observe how others form their entries. I don’t know about Erica, but I do get frustrated when the most simplest task is not understood and that goes beyond just this blog.

  91. 26GoingOn27

According to mlb.com, 17 of the 20 teams that were up 2-0 went on to win in the ALCS. So, if the Yanks lose the series against the Angels, we might see #23 in NY next year. Still, if we stop hitting like the Padres, we should advance no matter who’s managing.

    Erica,

    Jeter SS
    Damon LF
    Teixeira 1B
    Arod 3B
    Matsui DH
    Posada C
    Cano 2B
    Swisher RF
    Melky CF

Boring, yes, the same lineup as all but the Molina games, but if Joe sits Swisher or some of the other things people are asking for, that will be an unnecessary panic move, IMO. The others besides Arod and Jeter do need to start doing something, though.

  93. Yankee in ND

    Here’s mine:

    SS Jeter
    LF Damon
    1B Tex
    3B Arod
    C Posada
    DH Matsui
    CF Cabrera
    2B Cano
    RF Swisher

I noticed your intriguing lineup change to exclude Matsui.

    What was your rationale.

  95. Trevor

Who are we kidding? This will be Joe’s lineup:

    SS Ransom
    LF Ransom
    1B Ransom
    3B Ransom
    C Molina
    DH Molina
    2B Ransom
    RF Ransom
    CF Ransom

As you can see Ransom is so athletic he can play anywhere at anytime.
Plus with lefty Kazmir pitching it makes even more sense.

Anyone who thinks Torre will actually retire after next year is deluding themselves. he can’t leave behind the attention, adulation and $$$. Mattingly will be stuck as a batting coach again.

  98. Jeremy

Melky, Swish, Cano, and Tex better produce tonight. I am sick of their pathetic approach at the plate. They need to have respectable at bats.

  99. G. Love

Mattingly isn’t in line for the Dodgers job. That would require Torre to hang it up and I think everyone thinks Torre will renegotiate and try to get another big bucks contact.

Mattingly has to take a job if it’s offered. With Torre’s departure not being a given and the fact that Girardi managed the Yankees to lofty heights this season, his 2 most preferred options aren’t looking open any time soon.

I don’t think the Mets would hire him either. I think they are not going to go the ex-Yankee route again.

It was an embarrassment to them having Willie get a standing O at the old stadium last season when he made his appearance.

Cleveland isn’t a great situation. It’s a town that is severely struck by the recession and the ownership doesn’t want to spend because the community can’t spend.

It’s a shame what Cleveland turned into in the past few years.

I can’t see Valentine there, I see him sitting out, working on ESPN and waiting for the Mets job to be handed back to him before mid season next year.

The fans want Bobby V back there and the Wilpons are going to realize in order to make money as owner of the Mets they are going to have to give their fans exactly what they want.

Wherever he ends up, you can rest assured the team won’t make the World Series.

  101. Number23

“If the Yankees dont win the WS this year I wonder if theres any chance they’ll dump Girardi and make a run at Donnie.”

No. The same people in management and ownership who selected Girardi over Mattingly two years ago are still in power. There’s no way they’d admit to making a mistake. Cashman will have to go, too, if Mattingly is to become the manager. I obviously preferred Mattingly over Girardi but it was mostly based on emotions. When the choice was made, I was a little relieved in that I thought Girardi was probably more qualified. But then again, how much of a managerial genius does it take to win a division when you sign the three top free agents over the winter? I think Mattingly — or Torre — could have won 100 games with these guys. Winning the World Series is another story. Girardi is doing wonders compared to the way things went in the 2004 — 2006 post seasons. If the Yanks win tonight he’ll be a genius again.

  102. Al Davis

Good for Don I hope he gets the Indians managerial job. Anything that takes him away from that evil Joe Torre is a good move.

  103. Jimm

    mattingly?

  104. ariel

Donnie B. was a favorite of mine during his playing days. More importantly, he is a consummate gentleman. As far as a potential manager, I have seen very little, if anything, to suggest he would be a good manager. As a batting coach, he was no KLong, certainly based on the effusive comments from the players about Kevin and the absence of same as to Donnie. As to a bench coach….Torre never raved about the sound counsel that Donnie provided…but that may just be Torre. So…who really knows. If he gets a gig, it will be based upon his rep as a player, and comments from his contemporaries that he really is a nice guy and probably would be able to handle players well. Nonetheless, I certainly wish him well…as long as the managerial gig will not result in Pinstripe adornment.
