I know I am late on this thread... BUT..

Joe from Long Island on October 21st, 2009 at 9:06 pm said
"... Wouldn’t use it on ball-strikes, because 1)you can’t tell 3-dimensions and 2)the games would last forever.... "

First of all, the multiple cameras watching balls-strikes from numerous angles actually DO TELL 3-dimensions. The "trick" is not in determining the position and path of the ball, but instead it is in determining the exact top and bottom of the strike zone for each batter, which requires a person to plug in those figures.

As far as extending the length of games, I think using a process somewhat like the one used in tennis would avoid that problem. Basically, this means the umpire calls every pitch as they do today. Then, each team gets __ number of challenges per game (or maybe __ number of pitcher challenges and __ number of batter challenges per game). The system would already know "ball or strike" and the home plate umpire would press a button in his pocket, and immediately get a message in his ear, and correct the call if needed. I don't believe seeing a technology-enhanced video replay of the pitch would be necessary. My suggestion would add only a few seconds (3-5) for each challenge, and perhaps just a minute per game.

And the reputation of umpires would grow immensely!

The umps need to swallow their pride and ask for help from another crew member who might of had a better view, Tim McClelland like other other crew chiefs (ie Joe West) will rarely ask for help.

"karma would be certain people getting laryngitis ."

Wah!

No Posada catching, no Mr. Torre in the world series. I understand your lashing out, since your "managerial moves" never materialized, while mine did. I know it's gotta kill ya.

Go ahead. Have a lash.
