27 hours and 14 minutes until Game 6!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Jeremy October 23rd, 2009 at 4:47 pm

I still can’t get over the fact we did not win that game. Until we close it out I will still be upset.

  6. mick October 23rd, 2009 at 4:51 pm

    jeremy

it is not our given right to win every game.

it’s like saying swish “should” have gotten a hit to win it.

the pitcher has something to say about it, although fuentes does stink. :)

or…all he needed to do is hit a sac fly…it is not a given…the pitcher and the team you play are doing things out there to stop you which sometimes aren’t obvious to the naked eye.

    Jeremy,

No offense, but can you be upset somewhere else? It’s a real downer. ;)

    Erica,

Totally off-topic. But Brady & moynahan broke up before Jr. was a twinkle in Brady’s eye (in other words they broke up a short while after, you know, uh, conception).

CANT WAIT!!! Good thing my seats are sheltered!!!!!!!

I know that the Yankees dodged a bullet last weekend with the weather, but with 100% rain predicted for tomorrow night followed by nice weather predicted for Sunday and Monday, I wish that the would call the game early tomorrow and save everyone the trip.

By the way, regarding the “Swisher or die” vs. the GGBG debate, I find the conversation interesting. That’s all. I don’t feel that strongly one way or the other.

If the Yankees lose the series, it will not be due to Swisher’s lack of production.

The series will come down to starting pitching. No more and no less. If they lose tomorrow but CC keeps dominates in game 7, all will be forgotten.

I just won’t have any fingernails or hair left and the local liquor store will experience a surge in business…

Ok but what time will they cancel the game? I got my mother in law lined up to babysit tomorrow and would like to be able to just cancel and tell her to come out Sunday. Not to mention I’m not that into sitting in the rain. Here’s hoping for an early cancellation.

    RIP Soupy Sales.

NICE! I love chuck mangione. the night is getting better and better

  20. m October 23rd, 2009 at 4:59 pm

    Erica,

lol. You’re a good sport, as always. Except when it comes to that Nazi GTLU stuff. ;)

Had to bring this forward because it’s the funniest thing I’ve read here in a while. Thanks, Shame Spencer:

It shouldn’t have even come to this!! Arguing about Melky and Gardener is like arguing between two different brands of instant oatmeal. Either way, its just boring and replaceable.

  21. Jeff NJ October 23rd, 2009 at 4:59 pm

If the game is canceled, Pettitte still needs to pitch. If CC pitches the pressure is squarely on the Yankees to win, but with Pettitte the team can play a little looser knowing that CC will pitch the next day. Of course it could be a game 1 rematch, CC vs. Lackey which would be great baseball, but probably give us all heart attacks. Anyway Pettitte holds the record with 4 wins to put his team into the next round, he will make it 5.

  22. Chambliss October 23rd, 2009 at 5:00 pm

who’s gonna throw out the first pitch? I vote for Steve Phillips.

    ————————————
    I would vote for Hundley.

Seriously, it is time for someone to really get the place cooking. Boone, Bernie or Brosius?

If they get Bernie, they can have him in uniform so he can start in right.

  23. mick October 23rd, 2009 at 5:01 pm

really don’t like the Nazi reference.

    guess you aren’t jewish.

‘sacrificing a couple years of ML service’

Let’s be fair. Ted Williams may not have been a nice guy, but it was 5 years in the military during his prime.

  25. m October 23rd, 2009 at 5:03 pm

    mick,

no offense intended. you haven’t been here for the soup nazi reference (that’s from seinfeld). it’s a running gag here.

but just for you, i won’t ever use it again, okay? alright?

  26. sevrox October 23rd, 2009 at 5:04 pm

    Chuck Mangione? Bleh! Soulless music.

A ‘Scars on Broadway’ rendition would be much sweeter.

Yanks are currently 6 – 2 in the postseason, thus more or less matching their winning percentage from the all-star break onward – we’re gonna be AOK.

  27. mick October 23rd, 2009 at 5:05 pm

but just for you, i won’t ever use it again, okay? alright?

    m

don’t know if you’re being sarcastic but I’ll take it as sincerity.

  28. MR.OCTOBER October 23rd, 2009 at 5:05 pm

Im Bernie was going to be saved for WS but he would get it jumping!!!!! Boone and Brosius as well. I can see Boone throwing it out. After the heart surgery he would get some ovation. Def has to be someone that is going to get the Stadium rocking!!!!

  29. Evan October 23rd, 2009 at 5:05 pm

    chuck mangione?

he’s 69. he might break his hip :)

  30. m October 23rd, 2009 at 5:06 pm

i was being sincere. i won’t use it again.

but erica is known as the GTLU ****, just like the seinfeld character.

  31. Doreen October 23rd, 2009 at 5:07 pm

Soupy Sales. I actually didn’t know he was still alive. RIP. He was funny at one time.

I was out all day picking up the daughter from school, and it was good I had a break from here. But I came back and glanced through to see what the conversation was like.

Man, I feel depressed. Some of the comments make me feel like this team we’ve been following all year has been a figment of our imagination and that they must have been lucky all year, especially considering their manager is a “moron.” So, mick, I truly appreciate your comment above. It should probably not have to be repeated so often that another team in the playoffs probably wants to win, too. :) (Also, behind the Yankees, the Angels and Phillies – and Dodgers – had the most come from behind wins this season, so last night’s result was not unprecedented.)

I made my peace with the loss last night and worked out a few thoughts this morning here on Lohud. It was a tough game, but it was one game. All year long the Yankees have been adept at preventing spillage from one game to another. Why should that stop now?

Anyway, I do hope the weather holds. Last weekend Mother Nature cooperated just enough and that’s all we need from her again this weekend.

Was there any new insight all day, or just the same stuff rehashed?

I like Chuck Mangione doing the National Anthem. That’s different.

  32. mick October 23rd, 2009 at 5:09 pm

    m

    allrighty then…..

    Count on Bernie tomorrow night!
He always came through and hopefully will again.
    Andy too.

Place will rock tomorrow like a 7th game.

you do you hate “Hogan’s Heroes”?

  34. Bronx Bombers Girl October 23rd, 2009 at 5:10 pm

The main focus is Game 6, they are at home. I can’t believe there is so much criticism of Joe Girardi, Swisher and company. Nobody is perfect and things happen. Just suppose Swisher hits a base hit, things would be different and people would not be as upset and with “off with his head” comments. I know that we all have our opinions and in the heat of the moment we get angry but stay positive people…

We are still up 3 games.
We are back in the Bronx.

  35. The Other Phil (Don't Feed the Trolls!) October 23rd, 2009 at 5:11 pm

Chuck Mangione? Is Hank Hill throwing out first pitch?

  36. mick October 23rd, 2009 at 5:12 pm

    Thanks Doreen.

Soupy was the guy who once told us children to go to their mother’s purses and send in those green pieces of paper. Suspended a week for that one.

  37. sbarro phlly foot sausage October 23rd, 2009 at 5:12 pm

Hey all! I have a question: do you all think that maybe Girardi made a mistake in not adding Cody Ransom to the roster?

I had an idea last night, that Cody could potentially be inserted as a pinch runner who could steal home or score in a squeeze play at the plate.

Here’s my thinking: the man can jump from a standing position atop a 60 inch box. When the throw reaches the catcher, the catcher would be in a squatted reach position to tag the runner, in this case, Cody Ransom. But Cody could simply take the catcher by surprise, jump over him and touch the plate.

What do you guys think? I think it would work, and could be one of the most spectacular plays since the 2001 Jeter shovel pass to Posada in the ALDS.

  38. m October 23rd, 2009 at 5:13 pm

If they really wanted to get these games in when kids can watch, they should make the Saturday games day games. I know there’s college football, but don’t pretend (Bud Selig) like you’re thinking about the kids when you don’t!

Nobody panic now, but Saturday’s game is a Fox game. However, it’s a night game so we have a chance still. As long as it’s not 4:00 Saturday Fox game, I think we’re good. :)

On July 4, 1983, Chuck Mangione was in attendance as the New York Yankees played the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. After playing the national anthem on the flugelhorn, Mangione, a Yankees fan, joined Phil Rizzuto and Bill White in the broadcast booth. Mangione gave his thoughts on the Yankee players and played a few bars of Feels So Good. Dave Righetti threw a 4-0 no-hitter.

I purposely just got tickets for Saturday so I don’t have to listen to their bias anymore.

  42. Doreen October 23rd, 2009 at 5:16 pm

I never liked Hogan’s Heroes. Some things are just not funny. (I’m not Jewish.) :)

    mick -

I used to watch Soupy Sales a long time ago (really long time ago), but I didn’t see that episode, or I don’t remember it anyway, but I do know about it (I don’t know if I heard about it when I was older or younger, though).

Then he was a regular on those game shows for a while, right? (Match game, etc.)

  43. MikeBoston October 23rd, 2009 at 5:16 pm

If there is a rainout tomorrow night any word on the timing for Sunday? I know that Fox has a doubleheader of NFL so the assumption would be 7pm, sound right?

  44. Jeremy October 23rd, 2009 at 5:16 pm

Yeah we really could use Cody Ransom right now. Another stupid move by Girardi. You would think that Joe would understand the importance of having Ransom on this team.

  45. Chambliss October 23rd, 2009 at 5:18 pm

    sbarro-

That is laugh out loud funny material. Ransom could also be used as a pinch hitter in an intentional walk situation. From a standing position, he could jump from two fee and hit a ball 5 five feet outside the strike zone! What a weapon.

  46. Boogie Down October 23rd, 2009 at 5:18 pm

Yanks are winning tomorrow. They are too good of a team to go down. But there are issues with the bottom of the order, and the pen going into the Series.

First: Swisher isn’t hitting at all obviously. It would be wise to take Hinske into the Series as a pinch hitter for him.

Second: How many pinch runners do we need? I think I’d rather leave Hairston off of the roster, and take the extra pitcher. We still have Guzman & Gardner to pinch run.

Third: Joba should be off of the post season roster, since he’s about as useful as tits on a bull. Bruney could do better, and should get his spot in the next round. Although Bruney will probably just be added for a pinch ruunner.

  47. mick October 23rd, 2009 at 5:18 pm

    Doreen

Supposedly a lot of Pee Wee Herman’s stuff is based on Soupy’s shtick.

Soupy was the original “pie man.” Sinatra and others took a pie from Soupy.

I guess that’s where AJ gets his material.

  48. m October 23rd, 2009 at 5:19 pm

    mick,

lol. You should sue FOX (and YES and WCBS) in small claims court for the cost of saving your sanity.

  49. Doreen October 23rd, 2009 at 5:21 pm

    mick

I had heard that Soupy’s show was really too “adult” for kids. But the pie stuff and other schtick he did was fun for all. :)

  50. mick October 23rd, 2009 at 5:22 pm

Soupy was ahead of his time.

Goofy, like a Jerry Lewis, but intelligent.

Pee Wee Herman type of humor. Sick,at times, but thought provoking.

  53. Aura October 23rd, 2009 at 5:25 pm

is the conventional wisdom right now that Aceves is not to be trusted? I think if Joe had stuck to his regular season program of getting Aceves an inning in every post season game he’d be the same old trusted arm he was during the reg season. Anyone find it curious how the argument for not using Robertson was because he wasn’t part of the core bullpen arms during the reg season yet Aceves has two bad outings and he’s banished to the back of the bullpen? Meanwhile Hughes and Joba have carte blanche to stink it up every game. I’m starting to think there really is no rhyme or reason to Joe’s decision making.

  54. Azaz October 23rd, 2009 at 5:28 pm

aceves hasnt been the same pitcher since his shoulder injury in the summer

  55. m October 23rd, 2009 at 5:29 pm

Hughes is a fave, but he didn’t get the job done last night (though he did well getting out 5 straight in gm 4).

But without looking at any #s, the move to go to marte over coke and joba over robertson was puzzling to me.

I think Girardi’s gravest mistake was not pulling Hughes earlier last night. And maybe AJ should’ve been pulled after the leadoff single.

    But anyway, that’s history.

  56. Doreen October 23rd, 2009 at 5:34 pm

I think one of the problems with pulling Hughes was perhaps the only one warm at the time was Joba and of the two, I can understand why Girardi would stick with Hughes.

The next inning when Joba did come in and give up the leadoff double, they had to stall and stall and stall for time for Mo to get warm.

I think I remember noticing that Joba was warming in the top of the 7th, so I guess I just figured he would start the 7th inning. I wonder what made Joe change his mind. You know, he could have gotten a call from the bullpen that Joba was having trouble getting ready yesterday. These are things we won’t know – Joe would never say.

And if there is something with Robertson that is limiting his use, Joe will never divulge that information either.

So we’re left with questions to which we will never receive answers and scratching our heads over moves that may or may not make any sense to us, but do have an explanation that is not for public consumption. (I really think now that Joba wasn’t warm and that’s why AJ started the inning.)

  57. mick October 23rd, 2009 at 5:39 pm

I don’t understand bringing in Hughes and Joba in the middle of innings.

This was never done during the season.

The problem began when he let AJ start the inning.

Maybe he thought AJ would take it personal, which is ridiculous, because he was going good.

Joba 7th, Hughes 8th, Mo 9th. Use the formula that got you here.

  58. saucY October 23rd, 2009 at 5:40 pm

  59. Doreen October 23rd, 2009 at 5:40 pm

    mick-

That’s why I think Joba was perhaps having some trouble getting warm last night. He was up. But AJ started the inning. And Joba does best starting an inning fresh. Usually. Except for the first inning when he’s starting. :)

  60. mick October 23rd, 2009 at 5:45 pm

Joe is managing totally different than in season.

Last night he had to get Mo going and stall for him to get ready.

All this mixing and matching seems panicky.

He simply stayed too long with AJ for the wrong reasons. AJ actually did his job despite spitting the bit in the 1st inning.

With the lead he got nervous again and put the first 2 runners on, hence Joe’s need to panic.

That whole mess could have been avoided.
