World Series bets and beats

Sam Borden
October
26

The World Series is still a few days away, but that hasn’t stopped politicians from getting involved. If the Yankees win, Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand will get a supply of Philadelphia cheesesteaks; and if the Phillies win, Sens. Arlen Specter and Robert Casey will get some cheesecakes from Junior’s. Not bad on either side.

In a more philanthropic wager, there’s also this: If the Yankees lose, New York City’s Hunts Point Terminal Market will donate a truckload of local produce to a Philadelphia food bank. If the Phillies lose, the Philadelphia Regional Produce Market will send food to a New York City food bank. Now that’s a bet I like.

Lastly, word is that Jay-Z and Alicia Keys will perform “Empire State of Mind” before Game 1 at the Stadium. If the song sounds familiar, it’s because it is – Derek Jeter chose it as his walk-to-the-plate music.

    Are all times still TBD?

I wonder if FOX will cover this. Probably not.

If Jay-Z wears a Budweiser shirt and manages to incorporate E-Trade into the lyrics, then they’ll definitely show the performance.

  4. 100 pitches of fun...

They just said on the wfan that Heyman is reporting that the Yanks are consideing going with a 3 man rotation again for the WS. That makes sense. Instead of wasting a game by using Gaudin. This means that all 3 of them would have to pitch on short rest the 2nd time in the series. CC and AJ can do it the question is can Andy.

  5. TeeJay

Jay z sucks he is a fake yankee fan he used to root for the mets.

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOO

    BS, Jay-Z!

If that’s true, his rooting for the Mets was a very long time ago.

51 hours and 19 minutes until Game 1!!!!!

So 7:30 start time…..what time does the gates open? Batting practice start?? Thanks!

And if he interrupts the song saying he’s switching to Direct TV. They’d delay the game if he did that.

    A black taco and Dos Equis . . . I’m in.

I’m not sure if Jay-Z can make it for the pregame — he’s performing in Columbus on Wednesday night.

I think that Bloomberg should make a bet with the Philadelphia mayor, Nuttercase. If NYY wins, he sends the worms in the Big Apple to Philadephia. Imagine not having to read Lupica, Mathews and Sherman in your morning paper. If Philadelphia wins, they get Lupica, Mathews, Raissman and Sherman.

Do you realize how insane it is that the MLB.com page still doesnt have start times for the Series?

What exactly is so hard for them and Fox to figure out? Play the games at 7:57 like you have every other game (except for last night and next sunday).

I wish the Yankees would have George Steinbrenner throw out the first ball on Wednesday. That would be special for the players, all the long time fans, and I’m sure to “The Boss” himself.

Stupid question but…..Is there such a thing as a PG13/radio version of Empire State of Mind?

Some of the lyrics on the one I have on my i-pod might be a little “raw” for Yankee Stadium.

  34. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

I’m sorry, but Junior’s cheesecake is not that good.

I went WAYYYY out of my way to have a slice of that when I was over there a couple years ago and was let down mightily to say the least.

That pizza joint in Brooklyn, right next to the bridge..Grimaldi’s or something like that, was also a BIGTIME disappointment and NOT worth the two hour wait in line. Talk about wasted time.

I had a slice of NY pizza off Broadway for like $3 that was better than that junk in Brooklyn.

  35. Nick in SF in American Canyon

Now would be the worst time to be buying on the secondary market, everyone will be trying to sell high.

I don’t get why people would wait more than 5 minutes for a slice of pizza.

  39. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

    Stultus,

Ya, its a mystery to me too…we actually waited in line to sit down and eat there and were packed like sardines in the place. The pizza was decent at best, the red sauce was super watery.

    ===================

The hype for certain things is odd to me. Especially with food in NYC, since something great to eat is usually just around the corner if you don’t want to wait for 30 minutes.

  49. Betsy

Just catching up now……what a wuss Olney is. He can’t make a decision on the Yankees or Phillies? What happens if Hamels and AJ both pitch well? I suspect most prognosticators are going to pick the Phillies……..not without reason. People talk about the lack of “scare” in the Phillies rotation outside of Lee, but outside of CC, who scares the Phillies? Andy pitched ok against them earlier this year, but nothing great. I would expect him to be solid, but I don’t like that matchup – the Phillies are overwhelming offensively.

I definitely would not throw CC 3 times on 3 days rest – I think that is begging for trouble.

  50. KF

“a dime bag from Washington Square.”

Ah, memories. I grew up a half block off Washington Square. Nothing like being a 13 year old kid walking my dog at night and getting multiple “smoke…smoke…” offers.

  52. trisha - OPPC lifetime member happily waiting for Number 27!

KF, well it’s a little mixed up for me because I have them in 5. This is a “just in case” kind of thing, because the only games I could possibly go to would be 6 and 7 since they are the home games. If Game 5 were in NY that would be the one I’d be shooting for.
    (I
I got your prediction by the way. It’s already on the chart.

    :)

Unless I can find an affordable seat (I have problems with heights so I definitely have to be somewhere downstairs on in the bleachers) I won’t consider it. Would I go close to $1000 for a ticket – yes I would, if I was in the front row in one of the legends seats. Okay, maybe first 3 rows. But since there is no way that is going to happen, unless I can get a seat elsewhere with a good enough view of the action, I won’t bother.

I am thinking that the closer you get to game day, the better chance you have of scoring a discounted ticket – whatever that means! Maybe it doesn’t work that way for the world series, though I would think in this economy there will be tickets available.

If I do it, then we’re also talking the train and staying over in the City. So the price of the game starts to go up exponentially!

Oh I don’t know. My dad always told us that the best seat in the house is the one right in front of the television. There’s something to be said for that. But the world series. I’ve never done that…

  53. S.o.S.(formerly for a second 3)

Is it just me or did Abreu bump into a few walls trying to catch some deep fly balls in our series? I wonder if he was wearing some kind of qb rib protector which made him brave. Even that homerun Alex hit to tie it i believe he actually grazed it.

Awesome, Lee going on short rest for the first time in his career in the world series, opposed by our beast of the east CC Sabathia.

Hamels at home is whatever, he will give up some bombs.

    Blanton or Happ? Nonfactors.

  68. Stultus Magnus

    “2004 has been officially erased”

    Man, that’s never going anywhere.

Still proud of the Yanks though

  69. Betsy

This is not the same Yankee team as in the regular season. Their hitting is inconsistent – granted, post-season pitching is much better and teams are not going to thump like they normally do (except for the Phillies, it seems) and their pen is not that good right now. Phil is hardly the same pitcher – he’s a huge problem. I don’t trust Job either…..Robertson? He’s good, but he’s not lockdown.

I just don’t trust Girardi, esp. in the WS where 3 of the games are played in the NL park. His roster construction was hideous (I expect Guzman to still be on it instead of Hinske) in the ALCS and I won’t soon forget the moves that he made.

  70. 100 pitches of fun...

I can’t believe that the Phillies are pitching Pedro in game 2 of a WS. Hamels pitches much better at home so that is why they are doing it that way. But if I was them I wouldn’t be comfortable with that.

  71. Bronx Jeers

Nick you’re a New Yorker? Now we know where that witty disposition comes from.

I hadn’t walked through that park in years until me and my wife cut through one night recently.

And they’re still selling “smoke” which made me feel sort of warm and happy inside.

  72. PittsburghYankeeFan

This group made it over the hump. To me, 2004 is history–it was the only thing the Sox ever had over the Yankees. That’s now OVAH, in Sox language. The Sox have some tough choices coming up in a weak FA market.

Accuscore has the series as Yankees in 6 or 7 in their 10,000 simulations. The simulations had CC and Lee pitching games 1 and 5, however, with Gaudin versus Blanton in game 4. CC beats Lee 67-33 in 10,000 simulations at YS, and 50-50 in 10,000 simulations at Citizens. So if both pitch three games, the likely outcome is 2-1 or 3-0 Yankees.

Accuscore has yet to be wrong. It had the Yankees in 6 and the Phillies in 5.

  73. Yankee Trader

Noted prior Abreu comments. Why is it when paid 16M by the Yankees he wouldn’t go near the wall, even in a contract year, but for 5M he was willing to slam into the wall last night to catch Posada’s flyball?

Mark McGwire hired as batting coach by Cardinals. He should be able to “inject” some needed energy into their club!!!

Hinske will likely be added, even though we have another lefty power hitting pinch hitter in CC!

Anyone catch Bruney spraying champagne on the back of Hal Steinbrenner. He didn’t look too amused. My guess is he isn’t added to the postseason, or for that matter, next seasons roster!!

  74. blake

Sam, come on now. I know its a but of a misnomer, but its called at bat music. You keep saying walk to the plate music, its at bat music

  76. Jerkface

WFAN is doing a WS ticket giveaway where you can sit with Mike Francesa for game 1.

Who ever wins – I hope they say to Mike that Andy Pettitte belongs in the bullpen.

  78. Vader

Yankee Trader…I saw it and my reaction was the same.

It appeared that Bruney went from needing to call a doctor after 4 hours to not needing to call a doctor after Hal stared him down.

  79. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

Believe it or not, there are some FINE pizza establishments in California.

And no, I’m not talking about California Pizza Kitchen…that place sucks.

  80. Nick in SF in American Canyon

Yes, born and raised in New York. You thought I was some sort of crazy Californian???

As for the so-called witty disposition, I’m still holding out hope for a Happ-Burnett matchup so I can reprise my “J.A. Happ vs hapless A.J.” — sure it bombed the last time I used it, but maybe the audience has caught up…

  81. pat

“WFAN is doing a WS ticket giveaway where you can sit with Mike Francesa for game 1.”

Whenever he does these sit w/Mike giveaways I always think, the winner gets a ticket to sit with Mike and the loser gets 2 tickets to sit with Mike. Old joke but I can’t help but go there.

  82. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

    Yankee Trader,

I totally noticed Hal give Bruney an unpleasant look!

Who sprays their boss with champagne?!

I mean, I’d like to, but Hal is kind of an imposingly quiet individual.

  83. Yankee Trader

    Forgot to mention.

If Pedro pitches game 2, it would be nice to have Don Zimmer throw out the first pitch!

  84. Bronx Jeers

“WFAN is doing a WS ticket giveaway where you can sit with Mike Francesa for game 1.”

    Yeah, that sounds like fun.

I love when you go to a game and your going to your seat and you see a big fat guy sitting in the seat next to yours. Good times!

  85. pat

“Yes, born and raised in New York.”

That blows the illusion. I figured you were of some tribe of nomadic people with all the places you pop up in.

  86. Yankee Trader

Tim McCarver played his last 6 years for Philly and 3 other years earlier in his career. Guess that the biased announcing will be worse than ever.

  89. Yankee Trader

GB7- I think Bay is a Boras client.

Abreu will probably want to sign for Raul Ibanez money, wasn’t it 3 years 30M?

Some players really dimished their chances at signing big FA contracts, the leader being Chone Figgins.
