Some interesting props to consider

Props, or proposition bets, are usually sucker’s bets in Vegas but with the Yankees being listed as big favorites to win the World Series over the Phillies, I thought I’d show you some of the match-ups that are being offered (courtesy of Bodog.com). Odds that begin with a minus (i.e. -140) are the favorites; odds that begin with a plus (+110) are the underdogs.

Here’s my question: How come there isn’t a prop for “who will have more pitching changes?” You’d have to think Girardi would get the (-1600) line on that one. Anyway, for entertainment purposes only …

Who will hit more Home Runs in the Series?
Ryan Howard (PHI) +110
Alex Rodriguez (NYY)-140

Who will steal more bases in the Series?
Jimmy Rollins (PHI) -120
Derek Jeter (NYY) -110

Who will have more Hits, Runs & RBI’s in the Series?
Jayson Werth (PHI) +125
Mark Teixeira (NYY) -155

Who will record more Saves in the Series?
Brad Lidge (PHI) +165
Mariano Rivera (NYY) -205

How many Hits will Derek Jeter have in the Series?
Over 6½ (-130)
Under (EVEN)

Who will have a lower ERA in the Series?
Cliff Lee (PHI) +120
C.C. Sabathia (NYY) -150

Who will have a lower ERA in the Series?
Cole Hamels (PHI) +120
Andy Pettitte (NYY) -150

Will there be a Blown Save in the Series?
Yes +230
No -290

World Series MVP
Alex Rodriguez (NYY) 4/1
Mark Teixeira (NYY) 5/1
Ryan Howard (PHI) 5/1
Derek Jeter (NYY) 6/1
C.C. Sabathia (NYY) 7/1
Cliff Lee (PHI) 9/1
Johnny Damon (NYY) 12/1
Mariano Rivera (NYY) 10/1
Jimmy Rollins (PHI) 10/1
Chase Utley (PHI) 10/1
Shane Victorino (PHI) 12/1
Jayson Werth (PHI) 12/1
Raul Ibanez (PHI) 12/1
Cole Hamels (PHI) 12/1
Jorge Posada (NYY) 15/1
Robinson Cano (NYY) 15/1
A.J. Burnett (NYY) 15/1
Brad Lidge (PHI) 15/1
Hideki Matsui (NYY) 20/1
Andy Pettitte (NYY) 22/1
Pedro Feliz (PHI) 25/1
Carlos Ruiz (PHI) 25/1
Pedro Martinez (PHI) 25/1
Nick Swisher (NYY) 30/1
Field 15/1

Pedro has been awful on the road this year(5.66 ERA) and has been below average against the Yanks in his playoff career(5 starts 4.27 ERA; plus 2 runs/ 1 inning in one relief appearance). And of course, those playoff starts came many years and miles per hour ago.

i put 10$ on cc to win the mvp, and 5$ on arod.

    10 to win 70
    5 to win 20

i like the blown saves one.

  3. JasonR October 27th, 2009 at 11:17 am

Of all the props, I like Jeter over 6 1/2 hits (-130) and Will there be a blown save YES (+230) the most.

Put me down for $20 for Johnny Damon as World Series MVP.

    Thank you very much!

The Lidge/Mo one is a favorite of mine.

  6. Chris N October 27th, 2009 at 11:22 am

The blown save one looks enticing. Because that can go beyond the 9th inning so you could get both the Yankee and Phillie middle relievers blowing a game and have it count. I also would probably take the Werth one given how the two guys have played.

I don’t know what any of this prop stuff means, and I don’t want to know. All I know is that I can’t wait for tomorrow night. CC vs. Lee, and then A.J. vs. Pedro. This is the reason I’m on this blog on a daily basis. Finally, a World Series to obsess over in the Blog Age of the internet. Life is good.

    Ah, Erica

Forever loyal… I like that and so does Johnny

  9. Ogie Oglethorpe October 27th, 2009 at 11:24 am

    Cano at 15-1. Hmmm….

  10. pat October 27th, 2009 at 11:25 am

Who will hit more Home Runs in the Series?
    Ryan Howard (PHI) +110
    Alex Rodriguez (NYY)-140

Over/under on unintentional intentional walks could be the offset bet to this one.

Just remember folks, nothing is ever a given. Anything can happen with a 7 game series. Yankees have had some great pitching and also have been lucky their opponents have forgotten how to play defense.

Also, what is does the Field 15-1 odds mean?

  12. Mike October 27th, 2009 at 11:33 am

I just have this wierd feeling that Cano is going to have a MONSTER world series !..

  13. BJ October 27th, 2009 at 11:35 am

Not sure if this has been commented on but Pedro will pitch game 2.

“Also, what is does the Field 15-1 odds mean?”

Anyone else who doesn’t have individual odds.

This is the one I’d put money on:

Will there be a Blown Save in the Series?
    Yes +230

By the way, Wave Your Hat, great posts about Posada in the last thread.

  16. Pedro October 27th, 2009 at 11:39 am

Posada at 15-1 is definetely the best choice of you’re looking to make some serious money.

  17. lowshun October 27th, 2009 at 11:39 am

Take the yankees moneyline & under parlay for each game and you will be paid back double your bet (sometimes triple depending on the moneyline). Has worked for 6 outta the 9 postseason games so far, and I’m sorry I just jinxed it…

  18. Yankee Trader October 27th, 2009 at 11:39 am

Christina- Enjoyed the pictures, especially the one of the back of the cameraman. Hope you have some recourse.

Yankees had great starting pitching and defense in the last series, and if their offense lives up to its caspabilities, along with Aceves and Hughes, all of which underperformed against the Angels we should be fine.

Question? If there are any rainouts, doesn’t MLB still allow the travel day, even giving the close proximity of NY to Philly? If so a rainout could allow us to stay with a 3 man rotation especially if it’s Game 4 on November 1st.

  19. Wave Your Hat October 27th, 2009 at 11:41 am

    Thanks, Patrick.

  20. DB October 27th, 2009 at 11:41 am

Gimmie Swisher with the 30-1 odds on MVP.

He just might be crazy enough to pull it off. I wonder what the odds on Scotty Brosius in the 99 series was. ;)

  21. Yankee Trader October 27th, 2009 at 11:42 am

    New thread!

  22. JasonR October 27th, 2009 at 11:44 am

“Also, what is does the Field 15-1 odds mean?”

Whoever doesn’t have individual odds. So if you think Eric Hinske is going to win the MVP, you’d pick the Field at 15-1.

The “Blown Save” at +230 is especially enticing because it doesn’t specify Lidge or Rivera. Given how shaky both bullpens are, it’s a solid bet.

Here’s a quick lesson for all the gambling noobs:

15-1 odds means that if you bet 1 dollar, you win back $15

2-11 odds means that if you bet 11 dollars, you win back $2

When you see a line like -150 it means if you bet $150, you win back $100

When you see a line like +150 i means if you bet $100, you win back $150

On bets that you win, you win always win back the original money you bet in addition to the winnings.

The problem with that bet is that you have to bet 230 to win 100. A better payout than an investment, but not very prudent.

DB – this is sad. Please go learn how to wager in Vegas!

  29. David October 27th, 2009 at 1:40 pm

I don’t know how Las Vegas describes its bets. Who’s right. Loshun or DB? If I bet that there will be a blown save, am I betting $230 to win $100 or betting $100 to win $230?

    thanks

  30. Joba Joba October 27th, 2009 at 1:42 pm

Will there be a Blown Save in the Series?
    Yes +230
    No -290
Blown Save one is the biggest sucker bet…Manuel never gonna have the chance to put in the Blown Save King- Brad Lidge, and you know Mariano sure ain’t giving up a hit this world series, so lock me in for the NO -290

  31. Chris N October 27th, 2009 at 2:01 pm

DB is wrong. +230 means you bet 100 to win 230. That’s what makes it such a nice bet. In a close series like this, there are bound to be a few close games and with lineups like this, I think the chances of the bullpens letting a lead get away are pretty high, and certainly good enough to take a shot at better than 2-1 odds.

And Joba Joba, check the definition of a save. A blown save does not have to come from the closer and probably more often than not does not.

  32. RyanM October 27th, 2009 at 5:18 pm

If you actually go to BoDog:
Will there be a Blown Save in the Series?
Must be a save situation for the closer. All wagers have action.

The key words are: “for the closer” So this +225 is for Rivera or Lidge blowing a save, nobody else. That makes the +225 (put down $100, win $225 + your original $100 back) a lot more of an even bet than just anyone blowing a save!

  33. Frankie D October 27th, 2009 at 5:46 pm

hard to believe no blown saves is favored by -290. i want to bet on that. lidge vs arod? lol

  34. Jon October 27th, 2009 at 5:54 pm

I love Mo at 10:1 for MVP.
