Workout today, Live Chat tomorrow

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Oct 27, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Although the weather doesn’t look great right now – a theme that may well be recurrent during this series – the Yankees and Phillie are both slated to work out at the Stadium this afternoon. The Yankees are scheduled to be on the field from 2 – 3 p.m. and the Phillies will follow from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. We’ll have all the news from the workouts and press conferences later this afternoon.

Also, be sure to set aside time to join us at noon tomorrow for a lunchtime Live Chat as Chad and I take all your questions and do a full preview of the World Series. We’ve done these for each round and it’s really been a lot of fun, so I urge you to check out the earlier editions and then stop by tomorrow. Remember, 12 p.m. and the address is right here.

Or 58 hours and 14 minutes.

  3. Patrick October 27th, 2009 at 9:47 am

I agree with bringing Hinske back but I see no point in putting Bruney on the roster. When was the last time he pitched? I doubt he would be at all useful.

I’m hoping that Girardi drops Cervelli and brings up Hinske. Guzman isn’t really that useful but I think he would help more than Bruney. Hinske’s bat will be very nice when pinch hitting for the pitcher at Philly.

I do agree though, this personal catching nonsense has to end. Burnett will pitch just as bad with Molina as he will with Posada.

  4. Blackaccord October 27th, 2009 at 9:49 am

Is shelly duncan eligible to be added to the post season roster?

  5. sw1000 October 27th, 2009 at 9:52 am

manuel announced – pedro starting game 2!!! WHO’S YOUR DADDY!?!?!

Replace Guzman with Hinske and have Posada catch all the games including Burnett’s … I’m sorry, but this whole Molina/A.J. chemistry “thing” is way overrated and the fact that Burnett blew up in the 1st inning of Game 5 with Molina behind the plate makes me believe more than ever that Burnett is just as capable to throw a good game with Posada behind the plate as he is capable of throwing a bad game with Molina behind the plate. So why not lose Jorge’s bat and presence in the lineup any longer and just have him catch every game?

It also gives the Yankees the option of leaving Cervelli off the roster (dont necessarily need 3 catchers on the roster if Jorge starts every game) and adding someone like Ramiro Pena instead who helps deepen the bench and gives Girardi more late inning defensive options (especially in the games in Philly).

  8. upstate kate October 27th, 2009 at 9:55 am

Really? Pedro at YS? I guess that way he can throw at our guys w/ no chance of retaliation.

I think Hinske will be added over Guzman, the Yankees need a PH more than a PR.

  9. Patrick October 27th, 2009 at 9:57 am

Pena is only a defensive option for the infield and there’s no way any member of the infield leaves the game for defensive purposes.

I’d rather go with Guzman, he’s faster than Pena and a better base stealer. At the very least he can be used as a pinch runner.

Drop Cervelli, pick up Hinske. That’s the only roster move I’d make if I were Girardi

  10. JohnC October 27th, 2009 at 10:00 am

I agree. Its time to end the Burnett-Molina pairing. Posada must be in the lineup every game. The only roster move I make is Hinske for Guzman. Need Hinske’s bat epspecially in Philly where there is no DH and pinch hitters will be needed. Keep Marte. 2nd lefty is needed due to Philly’s lefty bats, including Matt Stairs.

  11. Imback October 27th, 2009 at 10:01 am

What exactly is Jorges presence in lineup? Sub 240 CAREER postseason. Double plays all time. Can’t bunt. Can’t steal or run on a hit and run. Can’t beat out throws. Doesn’t know count half time. Can’t sac fly with regularity. Look at facts not names. He CHOKES in postseason. Always has. Name me 3 signature Jorge moments in 12 years of postseason.

  12. jennifer October 27th, 2009 at 10:03 am

I think you drop both Guzman and Cisco and bring Bruney and Eric. Also agreed this nonsense of the personal catcher business is done. AJ pitched better to Jorge in that last game anyway.

  13. Imback October 27th, 2009 at 10:03 am

And his presence is so amazing the angels just walked arod last series. Be honest, who is just happy he strikes out in playoffs with runners on instead of hitting into double play?

  14. Imback October 27th, 2009 at 10:07 am

It’s not “personal” catcher it’s “better” catcher. Posada can’t hit in playoffs. His offense us equal to cervellis and molinas. It’s a fact. They can’t be worse. With that in mind you look to overall defense, speed, and brains. He is worse defensively than the other two, he is slowest runner and he is stupidest and laziest mentally by far.

  17. jennifer October 27th, 2009 at 10:15 am

I am at a loss for words. Jorge’s offense is equal to Jose’s. Okay.

  18. Patrick from CT October 27th, 2009 at 10:15 am

Posada has hit OK this post season, I know he had at least one big home run.
That said I give AJ Molina and I keep Cervelli on the roster.
    Guzman off and Hinske on.
As for the rotation, CC and AJ come back on short rest if we are down, if not then use a 4th starter. You know if CC and AJ go on short rest, we will see Andy for game 6 also.

  19. Betsy October 27th, 2009 at 10:16 am

To all who responded, believe me – I respect the Phillies a great deal and they could easily win this WS despite the fact that many Yankee fans think it’s a done deal. However, this particular year, the Yankees were the best team in baseball. That said, I definitely was not implying that Cash stir up a hornet’s nest by making proclamations that the Yankees were the best……..For one, that’s not his style and for another, I don’t think it’s necessary for confident teams to go around beating their chests.

  20. Crawdaddy October 27th, 2009 at 10:19 am

“However, this particular year, the Yankees were the best team in baseball.”

Let them prove it by beating the Phillies.

  21. pat October 27th, 2009 at 10:20 am

I have no issue with Mark McGwire being hired by the Cards as a hitting coach. If they think he can help their team, good for them.

I did find Bud Selig’s reaction to it a little puzzling though.

The same man who said “Alex Rodriguez has shamed the game of baseball” , is “delighted that Mark’s coming back to the game,” and has “.. no misgivings about this at all,” and finally said “Mark McGwire is a very, very fine man and the Cardinals are to be applauded.”

The commissioner seems to have multiple personality disorder on the PED issue.

  22. Yanks Fan October 27th, 2009 at 10:21 am

Didn’t Posada get the game tying bloop basehit off Pedro in game 7 of the ALCS?

  23. Jessica October 27th, 2009 at 10:24 am

Selig didn’t say anything about Ortiz, either.

Sounds like he’s angry CC is with the Yankees and not Milwaukee.

  24. Imback October 27th, 2009 at 10:24 am

Posada has 18 rbis this year vs playoff teams. He has 26 if you include Texas. The rest come vs oak, Cleveland, tb, Baltimore. Etc.

Look at his stats. It’s not about others being better… How could they logically be worse? Combine with defense issues, speed, and stupidity and it’s a no brainer for rationale people.

  25. Betsy October 27th, 2009 at 10:25 am

To those who responded, I was not implying that Cash should go around beating his chest proclaiming the Yankees are the best team, but this year they were, there is no doubt.

That said, the Yankees are going to have their hands full (I LOL at fans that think the Yankees are going sweep or win in 5). The SP is closer than you think……CC and Lee are a match (CC is better, but that really doesn’t matter as Lee is very cable of shutting a team down as he’s done to the Yankees this year). Andy has been rock solid, but I don’t love him against the Phillies’ brutal lineup and AJ is AJ (love the guy and I think he will do well but still…….). The pen has been mediocre to date, and unfortunately Phil Hughes has really struggled. I’m not sure the Yankees have any edge over the Phillies without him. Joe doesn’t trust him anymore (obviously, or he would not have gone to Mo for two innings in game 6). Plus, the Yankees lineup is not as consistent as the Phillies, who thump all the time. One day the Yankees can be great, another not so great – sometimes, even within games. They are going to have to score a lot more than they did against the Angels to win the series.

If people want to believe AJ is a baby and demanded Molina catch him, then I wonder if we are watching different AJs this year. The AJ I know has been a wonderful teammate. It’s up to Joe to put Jorge behind the plate. I never thought AJ couldn’t pitch to Joe – it’s JOe’s issue that he thinks AJ needs a crutch. In any case, Posada must be behind the plate in ALL games coming up…..but I don’t trust Joe to do that. I don’t trust Joe at all in fact; I think the Yankees are going to have to overcome his managing to win this WS

McGwire is going to have to do an Arod type interview and press conference prior to or at the very beginning of Spring Training. If he admits what he did, even partially, he will be fine shortly after. If he continues to deny and refuses to even address it, the media will eat him alive and drag the Cardinals season down with him.

The only sticking point may be contradictions with what he said under oath, although he never did say he didn’t do anything. So, feel free to open up, Big Mac.

  27. Bill from NJ October 27th, 2009 at 10:29 am

Wow, I’m surprised Manuel would let Pedro pitch in the Bronx. I understand Hammels splits on the road v home favor the decision, but still, I think this is a mistake by the Phils.

The fact that Betsy wants Posada in every game proves my point more than any stat could. She is complaining about a manager who had the best regular season record in toughest division, swept hottest team in first round, beat decade long nemesis in second round, and is in WS.

Mark, if that scum wasn’t going to “talk about the past” to Congress, I doubt he’s going to give the media the time of day just because he got a job as a hitting coach. He’ll say some b.s. along the lines of “I’ve already moved on from that issue..” blah, blah, blah.

Heck, if I were a reporter, I’d be more interested in finding out HOW he got that job.

    Hey, y’all.

Everyone’s favorite prodigal son is in some sort of talks with the Dodgers.

Apparently, Mattingly interviewed for the Indians job between the first two playoff series.

After the Dodgers were eliminated the Indians asked the Dodgers for permission to talk to Mattingly again. But they told him they were in their own discussions with Mattingly.

So, the Indians quickly went with Manny Acta.

Too bad for Mattingly, no? It’ll be rotten for him if he holds out the Dodgers job and Torre re-ups. I mean, if Torre doesn’t stay with the Dodgers where will he go? Back to St. Louis?

Is 250 OK? 3 Rbis OK? Two of his six hits came in the game where he ran the bases like the adult students from Good Morning Vietnam and were nullified.

  41. jennifer October 27th, 2009 at 10:39 am

can someone post the stat the Yankees record with Jorge catching vs Jose.

  42. Wave Your Hat October 27th, 2009 at 10:39 am

“Posada has 18 rbis this year vs playoff teams. He has 26 if you include Texas. The rest come vs oak, Cleveland, tb, Baltimore. Etc.”

Posada played in 111 games this year. 24 were against the playoff teams, plus Texas.

If he got RBI’s at the rate he gets them against playoff teams, he would have gotten 130 RBI’s in 111 games.

If he weren’t a catcher and played all 162 at that rate, he’d have had 190.

On your reasoning, Posada would have tied Hack Wilson for the most RBI’s in major league history.

    Get lost.

If Girardi would just let Posada catch AJ, the Yanks could carry Hinske and Guzman and their roster would be the strongest the Yanks could field.

    However.

I don’t agree with Girardi’s decision on Molina and AJ, but I am sure he did not make it lightly, and the team has had success with the combination. I don’t think AJ’s last outing will have changed Girardi’s mind – if I had made Girardi’s decision, and believed in it the way I’m sure Girardi does, one bad inning would not be enough to change my mind.

  43. Imback October 27th, 2009 at 10:40 am

  45. JasonR October 27th, 2009 at 10:40 am

I expect McGwire to say something along the lines of “I did take supplements that are now banned from the game.” I don’t expect him to say “I took steroids when I hit 70 home runs”, but it would be incredibly foolish not to make some sort of statement or mea culpa. Both he and LaRussa have to know that the steroid talk surrounding McGwire will be a distraction unless he gets in front of the story before Spring Training begins.

  46. MG October 27th, 2009 at 10:41 am

Imback, change your screen name to Imstupid, it is far more fitting.

Jorge hit the series winning HR in the ALDS, loser.

His HR in game 3 tied the game in the 8th inning after the Angels took the lead

He’s been great catching both CC and Andy in the playoffs.

Name one Jose Molina key hit in any playoff game with any team in his career.

Lots of great hitters have some bad games, that doesn’t mean they suck or won’t do something different the next game.

But keep repeating yourself, moron, it just makes you look and sound like a juvenile. I won’t even mention that during the regular season the Yankees were 64-34 in games caught by Jorge and 23-19 in games caught by Molina, that might send you crying to your mommma.

  47. NYYROC October 27th, 2009 at 10:42 am

    He’d rather play Molina.

    Pretty clever, that fellow…

  50. m October 27th, 2009 at 10:42 am

    jennifer,

Ortiz didn’t test positive. We don’t even know for sure he was on the “list” (he was).

    Are you talking about Manny?

    pat,

You’re right. But Selig’s a db anyway. Sorry to be so crude, but he is.

It’ll be interesting to see how a man who holed himself up over the past 5 years or so is going to deal with the scrutiny and questions.

Dan Patrick asked McCarver if he’d ask about the past when interviewing Mac. And Tim was all, “Oh, yeah. blah, blah, blah” That’s BS. Certain questions will be off-limits or no access in the beginning. And then everyone will just accept it as “it is what it is.”

But Dan Patrick and McCarver were scratching their heads over McGuire’s hiring.

  52. JohnC October 27th, 2009 at 10:43 am

Yanks were 1-1 against Lee this year. Lost to him in Stadium opener and beat him in Cleveland in late May. His game is to hit corners and change speeds. Very rarely comes into the middle of the plate. Yank hitters must go opposite field on him.

  53. MG October 27th, 2009 at 10:44 am

    I’ll repeat this for Jennifer:

Yankees record in games caught by Posada: 64-34 .653
Yankees record in games caught by Molina: 23-19 .547

    End of discussion

  54. Doreen October 27th, 2009 at 10:44 am

Girardi actually had too many options in the ALCS. He carried Guzman and felt obligated to use him, hence taking Alex out for a PR in that one game. Also, adding Joba to the pen gave him an extra pitcher, and as a result he probably changed pitchers, in some games, more than he would have. It’s nice to have flexibility, but sometimes when you limit your options just a bit, it focuses your decision-making a little better.

I don’t think Girardi’s doing a terrible job managing, but I have stopped trying to say he didn’t overmanage in some of the games.

I sincerely hope that after AJ’s last outing, where he pitched several innings to Posada successfully, that Posada will not be taken out of the lineup in order for Molina to catch AJ. The Phillies are a very offense-heavy team (or can be) and you need to fight fire with fire. However, I would not be surprised to see the same thing in the WS as in the ALCS. AJ can certainly pitch well to Posada – he’s done it several times over the course of the season. I guess we’ll see.

Hinske is a must because there will be a need for a pinch hitter in the Phillies park.

And because of the necessity to take pitchers out of the games for pinch-hitting purposes, I think they need to carry Bruney.

It is one thing to say that perhaps AJ is more comfortable with Molina behind the plate – I can and have accepted that and under most circumstances don’t see a particular problem with accommodating that “preference” if it helps the team in the long run. But to totally disparage Jorge Posada, especially regarding his offense, is to really not be paying all that much attention.

The Star Ledger had several articles today about the “Turnpike Series” and how once you hit a certain point in south central New Jersey, you have a real mix of Phillies and Yankees fans. My sister’s family lived in south NJ for a couple of years and the “home team” on television was in fact the Philadelphia Phillies. YES was blacked out. They said the Modell’s stores down there are having a field day, because they’re selling gear for both teams.

  55. pat October 27th, 2009 at 10:45 am

“if Torre doesn’t stay with the Dodgers where will he go?”

You may bump into him at the bank or grocery store cause rumor is he’s heading your way once he leaves LA.

  56. m October 27th, 2009 at 10:47 am

Well, whomever catches will need to be on their toes. Literally. Rollins and Victorino on the bases? Oh, boy.

Can’t wait for this to start.

Remember I said I was so nervous before game 6 I wanted to puke?

This is different. I’m more anxious than anything. How much longer, Erica?

  57. Mark in Tampa October 27th, 2009 at 10:49 am

I don’t know that McGwire will come out and admit anything, or even talk about it. But he is the big fish that the media never got a shot at. He disappeared after his disastrous congressional appearance, and every sportswriter is going to want their piece of him. IMO, it is because he was the guy they believed in, believed he was clean, until it all came crashing down. It put egg on the faces of all who defended him, now they will get their shot to destroy him. However, he could short circuit that by saying something like, Yeah I did a few things for a year or two, no big deal, I stopped just as soon as I realized it was wrong. Something tells me, though, that he will continue to try to avoid, and that will be bad news for him, LaRussa, and ST L.

I think Ortiz was left alone, in part, because he was the star of the red sox, but not all of baseball. He is not breaking or threatening any records, nor is he an all time great. He is small time compared to Bonds, Arod, McGwire, and if he ever has to deal with this, Pujols.

  58. m October 27th, 2009 at 10:52 am

    pat,

Not likely. His home’s in Maui. I don’t think he can stay away from baseball. I think he’s a lifer.

Here’s a topic for debate. When and how will Torre and the Yankees kiss and make up? Will he have a Lasorda-type of role with the Yankees?

Will it take a couple of Yankee championships to put the distance between the Torre years and a time when it won’t be awkward to welcome him back into the fold?

Or will it just take time? Lots of time?

I can see Mitchell’s point. Kid’s need to know that steroids won’t help you hit like Manny or A-rod.

    Mitch Williams
    AP
The MLB Network analyst and former Phillies closer Mitch “Wild Thing” Williams joined the show to break down the World Series and discuss the big stories in baseball.

Williams had interesting comments on the Mark McGwire story. “I’m sick to death about hearing about steroids,” Williams said.

Williams said that they have testing and penalties in place now. So why focus on something that happened 15 years ago. Williams is also upset about the way the authorities target the stars.

“All they’ve done is throw the guys that are really successful under the bus,” Williams said.

Williams said he wouldn’t want to interview McGwire if he had to ask about steroids. Williams said discussing the issue keeps steroids in the news and in kids’ minds. Williams said that the real message that’s going out there is you’ll be like Manny Ramirez if you use performance-enhancing drugs. But in reality, steroids don’t help players that much.

“They can put whatever they want in their body. It ain’t going to do anything to help you hit a slider,” Williams said.

Dan also asked Williams which pitcher in this series he would want to start Game 7. Williams said CC Sabathia. But he also says Cliff Lee and Pedro Martinez aren’t bad choices.

“There ain’t a whole lot on the field that’s going to get him wound up,” Williams said of Pedro Martinez.

Williams broke down the bullpen situations on both clubs. Williams said he doesn’t think the Yankees should break up the formula he’s used all season getting to Mariano Rivera. But Williams thinks that the Phillies bullpen isn’t as easy to figure out. He said Philly’s relievers have pitched better, but there are still question marks.

i hope that he’ll keep his options open after he goes through the first four games with sabathia, burnett, pettitte , and sabathia.

i would rather have molina catch burnett for burnett’s first start simply because they are used to each other.

if burnett has a second really bad start in a row ( and he got hammered in his last start) then girardi should rethink burnett pitching a second game or having molina catch him.

a 2nd game of the series isn’t going to have the pressure of a game 5 or game 6 start.

burnett has to show something in this start to get a second start. if he has a good game, he earns a second start. if he pitches like last game, i don’t see how he gets a second start unless it’s on the shortest of leashes.

the best scenario is he cruises and the yankees win his game running away , but girardi needs to keep his options open.

Torre will do TV work to stay in the game rather than the daily grind of managing once he departs LA.

I think a Yankee reconciliation will happen because he didn’t burn down the Steinbrenner Bridge just the Cashman Bridge. I think that is the easier of the 2 to re-build.

SO the only determining factor in wins is the catcher? Morons. Whose to say they don’t win those games with Molina? Look at jorges stats in playoffs over entire career and this season. Awful.

m- yep i meant Manny, slip of the tongue I guess.

Remember how worried people were about the Angels speed? Well they stole 2 bases the entire series! If your pitching is good enough you don’t have to worry about the sb threat.

“Remember how worried people were about the Angels speed? Well they stole 2 bases the entire series!”

that’s a pretty amazing stat. between posada and molina and the yankee lefty pitchers they do a good job of controlling the running game.

Pedro has been awful on the road this year(5.66 ERA) and has been below average against the Yanks in his playoff career(5 starts 4.27 ERA; plus 2 runs/ 1 inning in one relief appearance). And of course, those playoff starts came many years and miles per hour ago.

    pat,

I can totally see the TV thing. A $3000 suit has a way of making guys look smarter. Remember when everyone thought Girardi was really bright and smart when he was working for Fox? Now they think he’s a dunce. :P

I think Cashman only worries about the team side of things. The Reggie Jackson/VP of Whatevah’s side of thing is the family. I can see a reconciliation, but then there’s the book and what he said about George. But, yeah, the Yankees love their icons. Maybe after Levine is gone? :)

I agree about pre-planning only the first 4 games.

    *******

It helps a lot that Figgins couldn’t hit a ball the entire series

I am not hoping to see CC in game 7, I am hoping the Yankees have won the WS before that!
Who would you use for AJ’s 2nd start if he doesn’t pitch well in his 1st? There really isn’t a viable option, Gaudin has barely pitched.

  71. Wave Your Hat October 27th, 2009 at 11:15 am

Imback, if you had any sense you would realize that 419 post-season plate appearances spread in dribs and drabs over 13 years and 25 separate series are statistically meaningless – completely meaningless.

But then, you’re the guy who thinks hitting RBI’s at a rate of 190 per 162 games against playoff team quality opposition is a bad thing.

    You aren’t convincing anyone.

wave, I’ve become convinced that he just takes the opposite stance of most people to try and get attention.

  74. Wave Your Hat October 27th, 2009 at 11:20 am

I think the real reason the Yanks controlled the Angels running game was not so much Posada or Molina, but the fact that Aybar and Figgins only managed to reach base 12 times in 47 plate appearances.
