A couple of predictions

Sam Borden
October
28

Since Gannett, the company which owns The Journal News, also has a paper in Wilmington, Del., there will be plenty of coverage on both sides of this series. Those guys do a great job covering the Phillies.

Anyway, Martin Frank, who is the columnist there, and I both wrote columns in today’s papers about why each team will win the World Series:

He picked the Phillies in seven.

I picked the Yankees in six.

If you want to hear more about my prediction – as well as get Chad’s – check out the live chat that starts at noon. We’ll be taking all your World Series questions. Also, if you’re interested in a position-by-position breakdown of the series – something I’m sure we’ll also talk about on the chat – check out how I see the match-ups here.

  1. Robbykid

I agree with Sam, except, I might give the edge to Damon over Ibanez…..

  2. Mike Parch

    Robbykid,

Both are not great outfielders (Ibanez has a better arm but can’t catch and Damon has a horrible arm and somehow makes the catch while looking like a deer in headlights all the time) and with the way Ibanez has been hitting I think I have to go with him. Short porch helps Damon though.

    Go YANKEES.

I was reading through last night’s comments and liked your idea of “catcherball”. I think you are onto something there. Maybe the Yanks will hire you in their front office as they seem to believe in it too.

  4. Mikey J

Anyone know who is throwing out the first pitch tonight?

  5. Bronx Jeers

Picking victory in 7 never makes sense to me.

It’s like saying ” Well, the two teams will be evenly matched over the first six games, but in the seventh game, my team will be better. ”

That’s not to say that the Yanks don’t hold a slight advantage in the last game because they do as it’s a home game but is it enough to call it a definite win?

    Yankees in 4!

  6. Farr and Howe-this post brought to you by W.B. Mason

    hey everyone,
Im in Hong Kong now and Ill be in Nepal tomorrow. I hope to catch the world series tomorrow morning for me!

Heres to hoping that this hotel carries the world series

  7. Boogie Down

I never had anything against the Phillies. I’m a Yankees fan, but I was a Pete Rose fan, and I also attend games of the Blueclaws, the Phils Single A affiliate. But now with Pedro showing his ugly washed up mug inthe papers, and Rollins shooting his big mouth off, it’s become a matter of principle to give the Phillies a nice beatdown, and show them that We are not the Mets, who choke on their own spit, and that Pedro’s career would be over if not for the weaker hitting National league.

I have posted this before, but I get ignored when I actually talk about baseball, so here is another try.

I looked up the Yanks starting line up against Lee. Every Yankee has really decent numbers except Johnny Damon and Cano.

Jeter has .407 in 30 PAs
    A-Rod has .333 in 20 PAs
Tex has .391 in 26 PAs
Posada has .286 in 22 PAs
Swisher has .333 in 24 PAs
Melky has .273 in 12 PAs
Matsui has .294 in 19 PAs

If you accuscore those numbers, you have the Yanks with a definite edge

  9. ArtieA

If we win tonite, a short series..4/5 games at most.

8 hours and 29 minutes until Game 1!!!!!!!

  11. Boogie Down

    Yankees in 5.

  12. Mike Parch

    Boogie Down,

Couldn’t agree with you more bro (Joe Bedingo impression), I’m relativly young (24) and I have no bad feelings for the Phillies, they can do whatever they want, but with Pedro on the team and J-Roll running his mouth it makes me want them to lose even more than just the Yankees winning.

    Yankees in 5.

  13. Mike Parch

Wow Erica, I heard that the Yankees had good numbers against Lee, I didn’t realize that good.

  14. Rishi

Wilmington, DE – who knew! That’s where I’m stuck for what feels like forever. completely surrounded by Phillies fans and getting heat from the client for my Yankees calendar in the office!

  15. Erin

Erica-watch Johnny and Robbie both have huge hits tonight :)

  16. Mikey J

Anyone know who is throwing out the first pitch tonight? Hope it is a Yankee, i.e. Yogi Berra, instead of some politician.

That would be wonderful…. I get so happy when Johnny does well!

  18. Mikey J

Ditto, Rishi. I’m in Newark,De. Engulphed by this Pilly mania. The utter dissapointment of this area will be satisfying when this is over!

    Erica
that is encouraging (both the BAs and the time until game 1)

  20. Jeet Skeet

Sam, Chad, Josh….you guys are awesome with your coverage. I have so much stuff to read here during the day it kills all my time anticipating the game.

I was really starting to get turned away from this blog with Pete’s blatant hatred of A-rod and other comments of his…but you guys are Top Notch Yankees Writers.

  21. Boston Dave - 4 wins til 27

“that’s how you’d see pettitte start twice. if gaudin starts at all, then it will be pettitte starting only once and being available out of the bullpen in 6 or 7″

    ————–

    matt,

    I think you’re probably right.

A rain delay might solve this problem (though that would allow Lee, Pedro :) , and Hamels to follow suit)

  22. Mike Parch

I was on a construction site about 45 mins outside of Philly yesterday and I was getting harassed because of the Yankees sticker on my hardhat.

Nothing was worse than the job in Boston last summer tho…my name on the site was Jeter-F***er.

Just trying to put minds at ease.

By the way, with a minimum of 4 rounds of GTLU still to be played, you are very close to the lead

    Jeetskeet,

though I also enjoyed Pete’s work, I don’t miss the Arod bashing. That’s one of several conflicts of interest in reading a Yankee blog for diehard fans that is written and maintained by a Red Sox fan (Pete).

  25. Hokiehill

    Good work there Erica!

I’m going to go with the Yankees in 6…I think the Phillies are too good to go down easy and will play well at home with the Yankees taking 1 there and finishing off the series in NY. These teams seem pretty evenly matched but I think Lidge blows a save and the bottom of the Yankees’ order comes up bigger than the Phillies which proves to be the difference in the end. Tonight’s game will be huge as it will set the town for the series…I think it will be too much for Phillies to come back from down two and I’m pretty confident in our chances of getting to Pedro early, so tonight is big

  26. Boston Dave - 4 wins til 27

For those like SkeetJeet and myself who appreciate what Sam, Chad, and Josh have done with the blog… making a seemless transition after Pete left, I believe this is the location where you can write to the editor and let him know:

I guess the only decision today will be which order to put Posada and Matsui in.

I cannot help you with that. I just can’t wait until we go to Philly and people forget to put the pitcher in

  29. jennifer

Boogie Down – Me too. I was a Pete Rose fan growing up. I didn’t really have a problem with the Phillies, but you’re right. Jimmy is shooting his mouth., Pedro is saying the fans are afraid of him?! Talk about delusional!! WE HATE HIM! We’re not afraid of him. Mussina usually got the better of him in all those games.

  30. Rishi

    Did you see this:

I don’t know if I like the differential (number of Yankee predictors v. Phillies)

If NYY let’s Matsui and or Damon walk after this season, they should make a run at Marlon Byrd, who’s a Type B Free Agent. He can give you a 20-20 type season, plays all outfield spots better than average and he’s going to be fairly inexpensive without costing a draft pick.

  33. Jeremy

I’m so tired of the Phillies and their fans arrogance. The Yankees need to beat them down. They have the worst fans in the world.

  34. randy l.

“I was reading through last night’s comments and liked your idea of “catcherball”.”

    wave your hat-

yes, catcherball is a philosophy that there are undervalued pitchers out there who if paired with just the right catcher will be much better pitchers.

i see a market imbalance where traditional gms cut or release pitchers if they can only pitch to one catcher. this resulting pool of unemployed pitchers can be gotten cheap as can the catchers who can’t hit but who can stop the ball from rolling to the backstop.

the catcher just needs to be very soothing and it’s a plus if he has hypnotic eyes to mesmerize the pitcher into believing he’s good.

these kind of catchers are also undervalued at the present time so they can be gotten on the cheap too. once i pair the undervalued catcher with the undervalued pitcher, i’m going to sell them as a package deal to progressive teams for a hefty profit.

the only problem is that the pitcher will have to split the contract 50/50 because after all, he’d be nothing without his personal catcher.

Yankees are facing an “american league lineup” in this series. Haven’t they faced an american league lineup all season long ?

  38. zmaster!

    Yankees in 5

  39. Living with Balls

Yankees in six and J-Roll is silenced.

Vote for the best John Sterling call

My dog picked the Phillies in 6.
My cat said Phillies in 7.
Jimmy Rollins picked Phillies in 5.
And John Kruk said the Yanks wouldn’t win the AL pennant.
I’d say these are equally entertaining, and otherwise equally useless predictions.

All I know is that anything can happen in a short series.

The Phillies are a great team. They didn’t seem even to be breaking a sweat against he Dodgers in the NLCS. And they may win the World Series. But they haven’t faced a team as good as the 2009 Yankees. And the Yankees have just beaten a team as good as the 2009 Phillies.

  41. Don't worry about it...It's your Daddy

Yeah that WEAK NL took the the AL East behind the shed last year, and gave ‘em a beat down in the WS. Yeah that team that you couldn’t beat last year….what was their name…oh that’s right the Rays…well the Phillies made simple work of them.

I am so sick of people not giving the Phillies any respect and the media building the Yankees to be an unstoppable force. A lot people are forgetting that the the Twins and Angels gave those series to the Yanks…they didn’t win it or earn it. So let’s see what they do with a team that isn’t going to give them anything…they will have to earn it.
