I don’t know if this has already been said but I would make Andy my Game 2 starter and AJ the Game 3 starter so that way we could use Andy on full rest or AJ on short rest for game 6. AJ is younger and can handle the short rest. So, whoever pitches better, Andy or AJ, i’d make the Game 6 starter. My gut is saying Andy will pitch better.

they want pettitte to pitch on the road & burnett at home because their numbers are better that way

also if burnett pitches game 3 with molina catching in a nl park you have molina & the pitcher batting instead of molina catching game 2 in ny were we have the dh

All the signs point to AJ being caught by Posada.

I don’t care what Girardi said – actions show he has come to his senses, and took advantage of the opportunity to get Jorge behind the plate with AJ still on the mound in Game 5.

That was a re-introduction: “AJ, this is Jorge…Jorge, AJ..shake hands, boys.”

The abstract “comfort” thing is a luxury Burnett forfeited with that first inning disaster, and a compromise the club should be no longer willing to make.

It was imbecilic from the get-go.

“I was reading through last night’s comments and liked your idea of “catcherball”.”

    wave your hat-

yes, catcherball is a philosophy that there are undervalued pitchers out there who if paired with just the right catcher will be much better pitchers.

i see a market imbalance where traditional gms cut or release pitchers if they can only pitch to one catcher. this resulting pool of unemployed pitchers can be gotten cheap as can the catchers who can’t hit but who can stop the ball from rolling to the backstop.

the catcher just needs to be very soothing and it’s a plus if he has hypnotic eyes to mesmerize the pitcher into believing he’s good.

these kind of catchers are also undervalued at the present time so they can be gotten on the cheap too. once i pair the undervalued catcher with the undervalued pitcher, i’m going to sell them as a package deal to progressive teams for a hefty profit.

the only problem is that the pitcher will have to split the contract 50/50 because after all, he’d be nothing without his personal catcher.

  8. GreenBeret7 October 28th, 2009 at 12:01 pm

If NYY let’s Matsui and or Damon walk after this season, they should make a run at Marlon Byrd, who’s a Type B Free Agent. He can give you a 20-20 type season, plays all outfield spots better than average and he’s going to be fairly inexpensive without costing a draft pick.

  15. Jeremy October 28th, 2009 at 12:22 pm

I swear that the Phillies think that the Yankees are just going to let them roll over them. Everyone keeps on saying that the Yankees should watch out because they have an American League lineup, but the Yankees have faced AL lineups all year long and they just beat the 2nd best AL lineup- the Angels.

The Phillies should be the ones on the look out because they have faced weak teams all year long including the Rockies and Dodgers. And if it wasn’t for the snow out in Game 3 of the NLDS the Phillies would have lost that series to a weak Rockies team. The Phillies are good but they are hyped up too much.

I personally don’t think politicians should be anywhere near a baseball mound.

But in the aftermath of 9/11 it was conforting to see a sitting president do the honor.

And it’s nice that a war hero will be doing the ceremonial first pitch tonight, I’d love to see one of the Yankee greats (not named Reggie) do the honor.

I’m thinking Pedro is thankful that he’s pitching in NY. That way he doesn’t have to bat and get drilled for all the times he’s hit our guys!!! :-)

  35. pat October 28th, 2009 at 12:57 pm

The Phils are taking a similiar approach to pitching that the Angels did. Assigning pitchers starts based on where the game is being played rather than lining up the best 2 to go game 1 and 2. Home field has it’s advantages.

  36. upstate kate October 28th, 2009 at 12:57 pm

interesting article…of course they have to throw in the Yankee spending and the (supposed) superiority of the Sox farm team.

Keep politics out of Yankee Stadium

  38. m October 28th, 2009 at 1:01 pm

    pat,

I think so, too. If the Phillies lose game 2, they didn’t waste their second best pitcher. If they win, they take away home field advantage.

Personally, I’ll be interested to see how the 3 starters deal with the Yankee patience.

Early in the Angels series they were so anxious they were swinging at the heels. They made the adjustment and Saundes especially paid for it.

    kate,

Did you catch that? They can’t be team of the decade because of their fruitless spending binge? :huh?:

I agree with that! There is also the fact that the sitting president after 9/11 was a former college baseball player and a former MLB owner. There was a very real MLB connection there. I agree with keeping ALL politicians away! There are plenty of past Yankee greats and other “heroes” to do the job!

So I went out and ran a couple of errands and put on the XM radio – Ripken and the other guy (since they made the merger with Sirius, I really don’t know who everyone is). That’s all I needed to get the butterflies back.

I don’t know what I hate worse. Yankees fans who fail to acknowledge that the Phillies are a good team (though beatable) or the other faction that says things to the effect that “if the Yankees don’t bring their A-game, the Phillies will win” – the faction that NEVER gives the benefit of the doubt to the Yankees. I mean, one could say if the Phillies don’t bring their A-game, I would think they’re not going to beat the Yankees.

And then, they go on to say that neither the Angels nor the Twins brought their A games, so they lost. And then they say, in response to a caller who brought up the fact that the Yankees have players who have basically not shown up yet offensively (Teixeira, Swisher), they didn’t bring their A-game, and they won anyway. So, then Mr. Ripken says, well, that’s the beauty of the Yankees – they are so deep and so talented and so good, they can win without their “A” game.

So, tell me again, how can you then say if they Yankees don’t bring their A-game, the Phillies will beat them, if the Yankees are capable of winning without their “A” game?

Do you see how crazy these radio shows can make a person????? Can you even follow their reasoning? At least Ripken was honest – he picked the Phillies for two reasons: 1, he was forced to choose; and 2, he has a “feeling.”

I wish I could scream. SCREAM!!!!

  48. bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes October 28th, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Re asking athletes for predictions in series they’re actually competing in: here’s a story my Dad told me:

Back in 1952, the Dodgers had a pitcher named Billy Loes and someone asked Loes for a prediction and he said “YANKEES in seven.”

Well, it was a hard fought series and in the seventh game in the middle innings there was a ground ball back to the mound which was mishandled and which helped the Yanks win it in seven.

Guess which Dodger pitcher mishandled the ball?

Loes later said he “lost it in the sun.”

It was a day game (as they all were in those days) and he probably meant he couldn’t pick up the ball as it came out of the shadows.

Since that time, to the best of my knowledge, no player has predicted the opposing team to win the series. Maybe some of the old-timers in here, who actually lived through the earlier times, knows another good one or two regarding predictions.

Well, same scene for me today: same hotel, usual visit to Balthazar Warehouse (which was unfortunately sacrificed, for Game 6, on account of time), same Korean pre-game meal, but all of it much earlier, on account of the Bigwigs showing up and making getting there and getting stuff into the building a major headache for us travelers.

    GO CC… GO YANKS!

Its the perfect yankee hatred… Yanks win, its either because other team didnt bring their ‘A’ game, made bad mistakes or at worst the big payroll.. According to the “experts”, its not because the yankees played hard and good fundamental baseball and the better team…

i have seen Tim Mccarver or Joe Morgan mention so many times when a pitcher is getting shelled by the yankees, its because either the pitcher is pitching hurt, not getting the close calls, pitcher not having his stuff.. It would never be attributed to good hitting , patience or griding out ABs by the yanks…

okay so let me get this straight. The Angels brought their A game against the Red Sox, but as soon as they faced the Yankees they didn’t ?

And after the Twins beat the Tigers the Twins didn’t bring their A game against the Yankees ?

    upstate kate -

I don’t know. I just shake my head. I understand that I am biased in favor of the Yankees and overly sensitive to negative Yankee reporting. But it seems to me that very little Yankee reporting is framed in positive tones. It’s all what the other teams did right or wrong, as if the Yankees were a non-entity, just a team that enables other teams to win or not-win.

I really can take constructive criticism of the team. I still don’t understand how a team that won 103 games in the regular season and another 7 so far (against only 2 losses) in the post-season, can be getting so little credit for their accomplishments. Even the coverage of the post-game celebration in the Yankees clubhouse the other night was a downplaying of their win, when compared to the coverage of the Phillies’ victory. The reporter that was assigned to do the interviews in the Yankees clubhouse couldn’t have been more blase, and he came across as having very little real knowledge of the Yankees beyond the surface stuff. No one else was available? I felt like when they gave CC the MVP, it was also very understated.

I am also tired of being the only fans in baseball who are really “not allowed” to enjoy the success of their team.

They’ll talk about the bandbox stadium – the Yankees hit 8 HRs in the ALCS, 4 of which were in one game – IN ANAHEIM! There have not been a proliferaton of HRs in the post-season – nowhere near what the Stadium was giving up way back in April and May. And no one has mentioned that. Because it doesn’t play into the script, the script that says that Yankee Stadium is a band box. Rather than, way back in April and May, the Yankees pitching was “unsettled” to say the least, and that pitching in the post season is very, very good (for both sides), which tends to keep the number of HRs down.

I could write a book – but this chapter will have to suffice. I don’t want to clog the blog!

So if Posada pinch hits and Molina is out, there is no third catcher?

I’m not sure I understand why this automatically means Jorge will catch AJ.

  73. Jeremy October 28th, 2009 at 1:33 pm

The Yankee haters on Fox, SNY, ESPN, and some on MLB Network like Magrane, Williams, and Ripken are all losers.

I know that if the Yankees win this series they will cry about payroll all night long.

  74. Nick in SF October 28th, 2009 at 1:35 pm

Stubhub: you sign up, then you list the ticket at the price you choose. You can enter the electronic ticket info so that someone who buys the ticket can print it out, making the transaction instant. That also renders the hard ticket you have worthless (it wouldn’t work at the gate).

  75. Nick in SF October 28th, 2009 at 1:36 pm

Oh, they take about 15% or so in fees. So make sure you list the ticket at a higher price to take than into account.

  76. MR.OCTOBER October 28th, 2009 at 1:37 pm

christina- I sell tickets on stubhub daily. Its really simple! Since the game starts in a few hours you will need to be able to provide the barcode so whoever buys it will be able to print an eticket

Christina keep in mind stubhub is going to take a cut so put it up for sale for at least 15% more than what you want to make. You should be able to sell it no problem especially if all you want is face value plus the 15%

Weather.com is saying that the rain will stop at about 5:30 in the Bronx.

I’m going to the game tonight with the friend with whom I split a partial season plan (hence the tickets), and not having to deal with rain would be nice. I’m not whining, I just would like to not have to be checking weather reports every time I go to a game lately.

Our seats are in the RF lower deck, around the foul pole, section 107. Anyone else going?

SO WHAT,it’s only to try to DIMINISH what the YANKEES have accomplished this year,as compared to missing the playoffs completely last year.

The President loves the Chicago White Sox,he doesn’t hate baseball, that comment was politically ignorant.Baseball is AMERICAN as you can get!!

  88. Hokiehill October 28th, 2009 at 1:49 pm

on the Twins and Angels “not bringing their A game…” You have to be honest that the Angels looked a little tight and did not play like themselves…but there are two ways to look at that. First is the hater way, which says they just didn’t come to play. The second is the Yankee way, which says they play tight because the Yankees force them to. The Yankees will make you pay for your mistakes, so teams press a little bit to make sure they get them while they can, which leads to drops, poorly thrown balls, etc. It’s hard to say from my vantage point which is right because as all of you are, I’m biased…

  89. MR.OCTOBER October 28th, 2009 at 1:49 pm

JUST SO YOU KNOW THE CHEAPEST PRICE ON STUBHUB RIGHT NOW IS $300 and its an auction. IF YOU PUT 250 you will sell it quick plus make something for yourself to put towards your own ticket.

  90. Jeremy October 28th, 2009 at 1:49 pm

I just don’t get it. First it was the Yankees can’t win with a high payroll because it doesn’t buy chemistry. Now that the Yankees are in the World Series the haters are saying that payroll is giving them an unfair advantage.

  91. Bronx Jeers October 28th, 2009 at 1:50 pm

Of course on Stubhub you gotta worry about the possible schlub who is sitting next to you.

It could even be a Phillie fan.

Obviously both would be preferable over an escaped convict.

Single tickets in the 200 level are selling for around 400$ right now. You might ask for 275-300$right now and make a quick sell.

Prices will get much lower and many people wait for the 2 hour cutoff to find the lowest price.

  92. Hokiehill October 28th, 2009 at 1:52 pm

people complaining about payroll = Yankees successful. It’s like being the “evil empire.” people wouldn’t say such things if the Yankees weren’t winning. I’ll gladly take the whiners and nay-sayers if it means the Yankees are winning. Heck, I’ll even say it myself..”the Yankees buy championships!” and guess what, I still love all 26 (soon to be 27) of them!

  93. Christina: Pictures from Game 6 on the blog! October 28th, 2009 at 1:53 pm

  95. m October 28th, 2009 at 1:53 pm

Fundamentally good teams don’t play tight. Didn’t we hear all season, actually years about how good the Angels are at the little things? Actually, this whole decade? Well it failed them.

So all the years of learning to run the bases, stealing, first to third, etc in the minor leagues did no good.

The Twins and the Angels made numerous errors that hurt them. But guess what? That stuff happens all the time. The difference this time is that the Yankees made them pay for their mistakes. Most times you overrun the bag, you can hustle back no harm, no foul. But the Yankees infield made them pay. And the Yankees pitchers did a good job of minimizing the number of baserunners and making sure they didn’t stray too far.

  96. MR.OCTOBER October 28th, 2009 at 1:54 pm

Escaped convict is still better than a Phillie fan!!!!

  97. m October 28th, 2009 at 1:56 pm

And if the Angels did play tight, they weren’t very good were they?

  98. Doreen October 28th, 2009 at 1:56 pm

    Hokiehill-

You’ve got that right. The Yankees are free to spend whatever they want and as long as they don’t win, everyone is okay with it. Even reveling in it: “you can’t buy a championship” and all that. However, once they spend their money wisely, or rather, once the “expensive” pieces on the Yankees come together to form a winning team, those same, very same, people cry foul. “It’s no fair – who can compete with that payroll?” Well, it seems for the last 5 years prior to this one, quite a few teams, the very impoverished Tampa Bay Rays, were able to do so.

  99. austinmac October 28th, 2009 at 1:57 pm

I frankly don’t care so-called experts predict. The games are played on the field. Who knows if any pitcher who takes the mound will have their command. Who knows what hitter will get hot or who will slump. I remember worrying about the Yankees facing Kazmir with his fabulous stats against the Yankee hitters, and that was the best offensive output of the post-season. Each game is different. That’s why we love it.

The Yankees wouldn’t even be facing the Phillies if there was no snow out in Denver against the Rockies. Pedro was going tp pitch Game 3 and he would have lost resulting in the Phillies being down 2-1 in the NLDS.

The Phillies are the ones that have faced pathetic teams all year long including the postseason. Utley has a groin issue and has been slumping at the plate lately, and Ibanez has come down to earth and is fighting some injuries as well.

The Yankees are better than the Phillies.

    BRONX JEERS-
Thats funny. I had two extra tickets to a RedSux Yankee game early in the season. I put an auction on EBAY and the price skyrocketed. I ended up selling two $100 tickets for over $300 each to a guy with a Boston area zip code. We get to the game and sure enough this moron of a RedSux fan sits next to me. Im cracking up to myself thinking what a sucker. I casually start asking him if he is from Bastan. Hes like yea came down to see the stadium and watch the Yankees loose. So Im like you must have got these tickets right when they went on sale. His response No I got them on stubhub last week for 30 bucks each! (liar you paid $310 each) About the fifth inning the guy is being a total fool. I just look at him and Im like Dave ????? (thats the name of the guy that bought them from me) calm down its only the 5th?? inning. The guy cant figure out how i knew his name. Finally im about to leave and I look at the dude and say hey next time I sell a ticket on ebay remind me not to sell it to a RedSux fan even if I do get triple the face value. these Phillies played the Yankees very tough this year but the Yankees bullpen was in shambles at the time and they had to use pitchers like Veras, a hobbled Wang, and Tomko yet still came very close to taking 2 out of three. Add the fact that two of the three starting pitchers for them in that series have dead arms now (Happ and Hammels) and the guy who pitched the best game Brett Meyers is no longer a starter and wasn’t on the NLCS roster (he was added to the WS roster). Yes they added Cliff Lee but Pedro couldn’t beat the Yankees in his prime and the core Yankee hitters are very familiar with his stuff as opposed to the Dodgers who mostly were seeing him for the first time. I assume all this Philly bravado is to mask their fear. Tonight’s game should be very telling. If the Yankees blow them out of the stadium I assume this will be a short series.

  161. Nick in SF October 28th, 2009 at 3:02 pm

Ghost, sounds good, but I’m on my blackberry right now, not gonna work.
Assuming that Mussina would have pitched this year like he did last year is one gigantic hypothetical. He didn’t come back because he didn’t want to put himself through what it would take to even have a chance to perform at that level again.

And yeah, if Moose came back, probably no AJ.

I find it easier (and sadder) to imagine what the team would have been with a healthy Chien-ming Wang.

I don’t want to see this World Series go 7 games. I want the Yanks to win in either 5 or 6. I don’t care about having a long series, I just want the Yankees to win.

  165. The Ghost October 28th, 2009 at 3:04 pm

Patrick, they really do make it seem like every Boston Red Sox fan attended Harvard don’t they?

  166. Doug Out October 28th, 2009 at 3:04 pm

    Bronx Jeers,

What happens at the 2 hour cutoff? Do people lower prices on all the tickets that didn’t sell?

    Thanks.

  167. Zach in Port Jeff October 28th, 2009 at 3:07 pm

As much as I love Moose, I dont think he would have survived pitching another year with the same strategies he employed last year. There is only so long one can go pitching “backwards” before hitters catch up. He did, however, effectively manage the inside corner again (which led to much of his success).

  168. Stultus Magnus October 28th, 2009 at 3:08 pm

I find it easier (and sadder) to imagine what the team would have been with a healthy Chien-ming Wang.

    ================

Yes, that would have been some rotation.

It’s time for another round of postseason “Guess the Line Up”

Post your line up submissions here (or any new threads that come up) with players AND positions

Guess the Line Up will end at the sooner of the line up getting leaked or 4:30. No late submissions. No revisions

That’s a good way of putting it

  171. Jeremy October 28th, 2009 at 3:09 pm

The reason why Carlos Ruiz has been so good is because no one knows who he is. Pitchers should just pitch him inside.

  175. The Ghost October 28th, 2009 at 3:11 pm

Nick in SF, I think it was a MAJOR advantage for the Yankees in Game 1 and 2 of the ALCS to have two hard throwers going as opposed to finesse pitchers. Hard throwers always have an advantage in cold weather because finesse pitchers (like Wang and Mussina) need to feel the ball more and that’s tougher to do in cold weather.

Although Gardner has as many hits in 5 AB against Lee as Damon does in 22 I don’t see that move being made today. An interesting thing about tomorrow is Hairston owns Pedro and Cano is 0/12 career against him. Again another move I don’t see Girardi making.

  189. MR.OCTOBER October 28th, 2009 at 3:15 pm

Whats everyone thoughts on Wang for next season? I know hes out until mid 2010 but do you think he will ever pitch in the majors again for the Yankees?

  190. Nick in SF October 28th, 2009 at 3:15 pm

Very true, Zach, but I bet Moose would’ve come up with more brainy strategems…perhaps he would’ve pitched sideways, or upside-down, maybe even oblong after the AS break.

“Molina at SS ?! what about his range? what about his range?!”

His range is as good as Jeter’s and I figure his excellent catching ability will be a bonus from SS. He can call the signs from there, just like A-rod used to do.

  196. MR.OCTOBER October 28th, 2009 at 3:17 pm

    Gardner in CF
If Joe hasnt made any dramatic moves yet there is no way he will start Gardner and bench Johnny. The same is true for Hairston for Cano. I totally see your point but its not Joes style. I personally wouldnt do it either.

Stubhub “closes” 2 hours before the game. You can find the best deal shortly before this cutoff as people get desperate to sell.

Even if Lee pitches a good game the Yankees will drive his pitch count up resulting in him lasting only 6 innings just like John Lackey. Once he turns the game over to the Philly bullpen the Phillies will be in trouble.

The very 1st time I had to taste humble pie in my memory was in 1960 when I was so sure the Yankees would clobber the Pirates. BTW, the Yankees were the better team, but Maz won it for the Pirates. I’m not impressed with macho predictions any more. I truly believe the Yanks are the best team in MLB and I believe the RSux are 2nd best. The Phillies are probably 4th or 5th best, but it doesn’t matter because they are playing for the WS title now. Whoever wins 4 games 1st is the Champion.

Baseball is a funny game! Several years ago the Angels were the best team in baseball, but Donnie Moore threw 1 bad pitch and they lost the ALCS game. It is a matter of any given day! I believe the Yanks are going to sweep, but that is just my thoughts. I said the same for the Angels series & Yanks. Enjoy the ride!
