Lee was getting the low strike while Hughes & Robertson got squeezed. Utley wants to crowd the plate then drill him. Cano's lack of hustle is becoming a liability as is everything about Swisher. This has been the Yankee's pattern all season, get shut down by the starter then do their damage in the bullpen, they just never got there last night.

The bandwagon jumpers here truly annoy me. Anyone who thinks this series is over, even if we lose tonight, need to pack up their computers and go back to your playpen. The Yanks were outpitched tonight. It rarely happens. There's a fam bigger likliehood that we win 4 of the next 5 than not.

Beatdown mercifully over . . . The Yankee lineup can return to form tomorrow against Pedro. They'll wait out his soft shoe routine and then score against him and/or the Phillies bullpen. But Bronx Jeers, point taken - Pedro's got nothing to lose. The Yankees want to be their usual patient selves, not help him out, and see if he doesn't get tired and have to leave early.

It's got to be unpleasant to get slapped around like this, but the offense should be restored to health in game 2. I hope AJ -- whom I love, rollercoaster outings and all -- comes up aces. Seven strong and the bullpen closes it out. And if he feels moved to throw a complete game shutout, we'll take it, no questions asked.

And to the Posada haters: we're lucky to have him. Lucky, and it will be a huge loss to the team the day he retires. The amount of knee-jerk antipathy and casual ingratitude toward this stalwart member of the rightfully revered Core Four is as astounding as it is unfounded. You'd think that switch hitting catchers with patience, power, durability and championship-tested mettle who can play and win in the 24/7/365 pressure-cooker that is the New York Yankees just grow on trees. Wow. Apparently there's no limit to the blindness of some so-called Yankee fans.

The Yanks can turn things around quickly with good at-bats and timely hitting. A potent offense has a way of covering a multitude of issues, including the great-one-minute/downright-scary-the-next thrill ride that is middle relief. And to state the obvious, they'll need to find a way to deal with Cliff Lee, who flat-out suffocated them. Nothing but love for CC, who managed to keep them to 2 runs without his best stuff. The Yankees definitely aren't done by a longshot. Heck (see Terms of Service) no. They're tough, resilient, fearless and tireless. When they have a bad game, and this was a bad one, they don't immediately freak out or give up. Until I see otherwise, I expect they'll be be back and better than ever, because they know more than anyone that there's no crying in baseball. Kicking water coolers, cursing a blue streak on the way back to the dugout after grounding out to short, you betcha, but no crying. That's so not how they roll. Like the man said, not over till it's over, and we have just gotten started. Chin up. GO Yanks.

Hey Boston Dave --

I hear ya and yes, if the Yankees are down 0-2 heading to Philly, the series is not "over" because they Phillies still need to win 2 more games.

However, my feeling is that in avoiding going dowin 0-2 tomorrow by pitching Mo two innings to close out a win, we set ourselves up to swing the series back in our favor heading into Game 3. I have tremendous faith that Andy will be dealing on Saturday night ... and ... I also believe that Hamels will continue to be the Phillies "weakest link" and give the Yankees plenty of chances to score.

But again, it all gets set in motion by winning tomorrow ... it is a double-win ... they avoid being dangerously close to being out of the series and have a huge pitching advantage going into Game 3, even if they are on the road.

RSM
Did the 96 Yankees have a bull pen?
Did they have a head case# 2 pitcher?
Did the bats go dead?
Did they go 8 innings without scoring?
Did they look scared and tight too?

"It is stating the obvious, but so very true. This isnt 1996 when the Yankees dropped the first 2 to Atlanta and then stormed them 4 straight."

-------------

but it IS the team that was 7-2 in the playoffs prior to this game.

they can still win the series down 0-2, of course, the liklihood drops a bit.

Lee was dominant.

but this Phillies team wasn't unbeatable this season. They didn't have the best record in their league.

As Arnold said in Predator "if it bleeds, we can kill it"

the Phillies bleed, a lot, Yanks just need to close the deal.

Yes Goodnight, & don't come back here.

Tonight was frustrating, but what's with all the panic?
And tomorrow is NOT a "must win game".
Stop the nonsense.
The 1996 Braves had a much better pitching staff than the 2009 Phillies and utterly dominated the Yankees in the 1st two games of the 1996 World Series. How'd that one turn out?
