World Series Game 2: Phillies at Yankees (III)

Sam Borden
October
29

UPDATE, 10:32 p.m.: Probably won’t be a ton of updates as I try to write for the paper’s first deadline, but wanted to give you guys a fresh thread for the final few innings. Yankees trying to close it out and draw level in the series.

UPDATE, 10:38 p.m.: I know we all love the Captain and everything, but that was among the silliest plays I’ve seen in a long while. Sometimes it just feels like Jeter refuses to acknowledge that he’s, you know, a really good hitter and pretty much shouldn’t be bunting in a big situation ever, let alone with two strikes. Just crazy.

UPDATE, 10:45 p.m.: That was very strange. It sure looked like Howard didn’t make the catch on Damon’s liner, but the umpire called it a catch and then Howard doubled off Cabrera at second base for a double play. After a huddle, the umps upheld the original call. To me, replays looked like it took a short-hop into Howard’s glove. Either way, Mo is on now for six outs.

    100 pitches of fun… October 29th, 2009 at 10:34 pm

If he hits a ground ball Gardner better not come home.

    He might beat it.

  5. Denise

how hard is it to sac fly here Jorge? Really

  6. PL

o come on Posada…hes just cold thats why im nervous

  7. trisha - OPPC forever - (new lucky picture from last day at the old Stadium) BRING ON THE GHOSTS!

I definitely don’t want AJ to come out for the next inning – unless this turns into a huge inning. I don’t want anything to happen to ruin his outing.

  8. Betsy

Randy, that may be so, but tonight’s game is the only one that counts at this point……..I wouldn’t push Mo. Thanks for the info, though – it’s good stuff. What’s your take on AJ? I mean, besides that he was great….what did you see that you didn’t see in other starts?

  9. PL

    yea Jorge good stuff

  10. DT - OPPC member

    good job Angel!!

THIS is what I wanted to see! Girardi played this brilliantly!

Nice job by Posada. Let’s continue the rally!!!

  18. PL

  19. Gardner in CF

    Girardi is brilliant

  20. Boston Dave - 4 wins til 27

    bunt here!

  21. The Ghost

Now really, could the Molina start have worked out any better? Molina plays stellar D, Burnett pitches a gem and Posada pinches for Molina and gets a big rbi. Talk about your perfect world.

  22. 100 pitches of fun...

I would bunt here otherwise Jeter is the DP king.

  24. Brandon AWESOME! (BECAUSE In New York! This song isn't what dreams are made of!)

    Jetes pls execute it.

  25. Denise

    Jeter bunting? why?

  26. The Ghost

Just so no one forgets. That run was set up by small ball.

  27. michelle b. - i smell a yankee win!

i like the two headed catcher system!

    Hip Hip JorSe

  28. FeBuch

Three hits in a row!!! Lets keep it going!! And Joe Buck is the only person on earth that thinks it’s intriguing that Girardi pinch hit for Molina, that’s the most obvious move in the planet…

  29. Brandon AWESOME! (BECAUSE In New York! This song isn't what dreams are made of!)

    Jetes can’t bunt.

  30. KF

THIS is what I wanted to see! Girardi played this brilliantly!

I thought I read tonight that he didn’t have a clue?

  31. Boston Dave - 4 wins til 27

    trisha or anyone else,

I have tickets for Game 5 in Philly if I want them for face value.

    OR….

I can forfeit those for probably a 70% chance of getting tickets for Game 6 or 7 for face value

    what would you do??

  32. trisha - OPPC forever - (new lucky picture from last day at the old Stadium) BRING ON THE GHOSTS!

Hey Bets, what do you think of ole Girardi now? EVERY move he made has paid off. I would think you have to cut him some slack now. You can’t really think all of this happened in spite of him!

    ;)

  33. Gardner in CF

it was a routine throw. nothing special.

  34. Trevor

Jeter can’t bunt now? Wow

  35. Betsy

The only thing about AJ in the 8th is that he’s going to have sat for awhile…….still, I don’t want Mo for 6 and I don’t trust anyone else in the pen

  36. 100 pitches of fun...

Great job by Jeter. 100% wasted at bat with no one out.

  37. kimoinsd

    What the fudge Jete?

  38. Bryan

why in the world is he bunting at all

    Damon is NEXT!

  39. Just 6 more outs!

    Stupid, stupid, stupid!!

  40. Gardner in CF

not a bad play. really, nothing to lose. not like they’re losing by 2 runs.

  41. michelle b. - i smell a yankee win!

    wow jetes….ughh

  42. stacey

total wasted atbat by jeter..that just didnt make sense

  43. Jeff NJ

    ouch Jeter.

  44. FeBuch

Holy crap, did Jeter really just take an 0-1 pitch bunting and then foul out on an 0-2 bunt?? Jeter’s never looked that bad ever, but we’re all human…

  45. PL

    well that changes this inning

  46. DT - OPPC member

    Jeter bunting with two strikes?

    Now I’ve seen everything. :-(

  47. stacey

a big hit would be nice by damon right here..

  48. The Ghost

No way, should Tim McCarver EVER question ANYTHING Derek Jeter does. McCarver, your not even qualified to look at Jeter’s jock strap. Just be quiet and look away.

  49. m

Thank goodness we-re up by 2 (thnx Jorge). Otherwise that would be an argh moment.

  50. NYY626

Things I love: when i go to a new thread and there are TWENTY SEVEN comments ;)

Things I do not love: Jeters obsession with bunting.

  51. 100 pitches of fun...

That was absolutely ridiculous. 0-2 and your bunting??? If your Molina maybe, Jeter makes no sense.

  52. Brandon AWESOME! (BECAUSE In New York! This song isn't what dreams are made of!)

DO NOT, I REPEAT..DO NOT BLAME GI JOE FOR THAT!

    JETES WTH!!!

  53. Motown Yankee

Jeter bunting at all let alone with 2 strikes is the dumbest thing EVER! Just hit the damn ball and stop over thinking

  54. Denise

take Game 6 or 7 in NY, much more fun too!

  55. Gardner in CF

With Jeter that’s a high percentage that he gets it down. Good idea, bad execution.

  56. Just 6 more outs!

Bad game for Jeter. But of course all anyone will talk about tomorrow is A-Rod’s strikeouts.

  57. Nick D.

Anyone have any idea what Jeter was thinking there?

    That is so unlike him…

    What the heck was that?

  58. Johnny D.

Finally some action. This is the team we’ve seen all year. Finally, finally, finally.

  59. Nick in SF in Larkspur

Girardi’s moves have been pretty good this inning, I wonder if he’s getting pointers from Joe Torre. He was always the master at that kind of stuff.

  60. zmaster!!

that’s jetes decision.. not joe g’s

  61. KF

SJ doesn’t like Jeter bunting….. wait he doesn’t like molina catching

  62. Gardner in CF

Motown Yankee October 29th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

Jeter bunting at all let alone with 2 strikes is the dumbest thing EVER! Just hit the damn ball and stop over thinking

    is that you Pete Abe?

  63. trisha - OPPC forever - (new lucky picture from last day at the old Stadium) BRING ON THE GHOSTS!

BD, that is really a tough call. If it were I, I think I would wait for the Stadium. But that’s because I would have no desire to be in Philly for the game. I’d much rather see it at home.

You play the odds of course if you wait – but I cannot imagine that we don’t take one of the next three games in Philly.

    Tough call BD.

  64. ariel

McCarver was right…”a bad play by Derek Jeter”. Highly unusual but true. Let’s see if Johnny D’s efforts for a contract move him up a notch.

  65. Nick in NJ

I have to think Jeter isn’t that dumb. Had to be called from the bench. You are a career .312 postseason hitter. Work the count and swing the bat. Argh.

  66. terpbomber (not a bridge jumper)

I would have liked it better if Jeter just swung at a third strike rather than doing the riskier bunt move.

  67. Blackaccord

Jeter with a dumb play.. The first two strikes it looked like he was trying to pull the bat from the bunt.. That was a terrible AB by jeter..

  68. m

Pete’s somewhere laughing about Jeter bunting right now . Is he still covering the series?

  69. CD

    AJ IS A GOLDEN GOD

  70. 100 pitches of fun...

That was very odd. The last pitch looked like a curveball or something just swing away at point.

  71. KF

    Nick,
Do you mean Don Zimmer’s version of Joe Torre?

  72. Boston Dave - 4 wins til 27

“take Game 6 or 7 in NY, much more fun too!”

    ————

thanks Denise. I’m leaning towards that but there is no guarantee I get them – just a good chance.

The Game 5 tickets are selling for $800 a piece on stubhub – $175 a piece for me.

    I’ll probably roll the dice.

  73. Pepitone

Girardi, do not bring in Mo for a six out stint, it isn’t necessary now. You have a cushion, you might try Robertson in that bridge role, see how he does.

I hope Girardi wasn’t the one who instructed Jetes to bunt.

  74. Denise

that AB was a buzz killer for me, totally

  75. Trevor

The bunt is a good idea, he just did a poor job of executing.

  76. The Ghost

Damon will pick Jete up, you watch.

  77. Triple Short Of A Cycle

    Nick in SF in Larkspur,

Really??? like not bunting on Schilling and not trying to steal on Wakefield wild pitch after wild pitch?

  78. PittsburghYankeeFan

$20 million yearly for that at bat? The Yankees could get that from Austin Jackson in AAA. No–how about Kei Igawa batting.

That has to be one of the most atrocious WS at bats ever!

What a clown! You know how to put the ball in play, and you bunt a third strike on a guy who can’t find the plate.

    Excellent work, Captain of Bums.

  79. 100 pitches of fun...

Maybe Damon can actually get a hit here…

  80. Bronx Jeers

    Forgot the count?

    No comprendo.

  81. Bryan

    redeem yourself Damon you jerk

  82. Gardner in CF

If Jeter got that down most of you wouldn’t be calling it a bad idea.

  83. JasonR

Come on Johnny. Do you want to play here next year?

  84. trisha - OPPC forever - (new lucky picture from last day at the old Stadium) BRING ON THE GHOSTS!

“SJ doesn’t like Jeter bunting….. wait he doesn’t like molina catching”

  85. Boston Dave - 4 wins til 27

my thinking too trisha… its just that I could end up with nothing. But I want to be there for the 4th Yankee victory so bad that it’s prob worth the risk.

  86. Kevin Page

Michael Kay muse t bfuming right now. He hates when the Yankees sacrifice to begin with, but a good hitter like Jeter and on an 0-2 count. Lord have mercy when he starts his next radio show.

Don’t be surprised if he is frothing at the mouth on the post game show.

  87. FeBuch

    Motown

I totally agree, Jeter’s a great hitter, we could’ve blown the doors off this thing if we weren’t trying so hard to advance the runners.

  88. Paco Dooley

Huge mistake by a hot hitter like Jeter. Why bother bunting there when he has a reasonable shot at an RBI via a hit?

  89. Nick D.

one of those smack home runs to right field would be awesome right now.

    Come on Johnny!

  90. PL

make some noise crowd lets go my god

  91. FeBuch

Nooooo!!! NOOoooo!!! SOO WRONG!!! SO WRONG!!!

  92. 100 pitches of fun...

    Are you kidding me?!!

  93. terpbomber (not a bridge jumper)

I’m a bit confused about that last play.

  94. Nick D.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYy

    Are you kidding me

no no no no no no no no no

    Umps…no way

    come on

    Worst thing ever.

  95. Gardner in CF

so they just got gifted a double play when we should have the bases loaded

  96. FeBuch

UNREAL!!!! HOW DOES HE NOT SEE THAT!! LOOK AT RYAN HOWARD THROW THE BALL TO SECOND, HOW DOES HE THINK HE COULDVE CAUGHT IT IF HE DOES THAT?

  97. ariel

Nick was joking….Torre’s astute in-game moves? After Zim left, Torre literally went for a game long snooze.

  98. Trevor

    What the hell?????????

  99. Just 6 more outs!

I see now why the phillies win. They are cheaters and liars.

  100. Boston Dave - 4 wins til 27

    ugh

the yanks got some calls in the ALCS, but the tables have turned in the WS

  101. PL

god damn umps again…son of a b…only that would happen to damon btw

  102. m

    Let’s go, guys. 6 outs. That’s all. ;)

  103. The Ghost

I think Howard was going for the 3-6-3.

  104. David Cone's Camera Face

that inning and the rally was ended when jeter did a stupid bonehead bunt.

  105. Brandon AWESOME! (BECAUSE In New York! This song isn't what dreams are made of!)

It’s 2 games into the WS, so far we’ve seen

    2 solo shots

    A PR for a speedster

A wonderful pitching performance on both sides.

Another missed call on the field by these umps, WOW

  106. trisha - OPPC forever - (new lucky picture from last day at the old Stadium) BRING ON THE GHOSTS!

    Bad call.

  107. RalphieD (OPPC)

    tough luck!!

  108. Kevin Page

Even thought it was a bad call, Jeter’s mistake set the bad tone for the inning.

NEVER, NEVER give anyone a FREE OUT.

  109. Joe

How come we get a ump conference for the double play ball yesterday and nothing today?

  110. Blackaccord

Wont the umpires get help now for that double play??

  111. KF

Where’s the umps huddling to discuss that play?

  112. Triple Short Of A Cycle

HOW COME THESE IDIOTS AREN’T GETTING TOGETHER TO TALK ABOUT IT?????????

    This is BS

  113. Motown Yankee

Bud is it time for replay or at least the umps to get together to make the right call. another bad call

  114. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

    Crap call!

  115. Yankee44

    PUTRID call.

  116. Tom

    Blown call

  117. DT - OPPC member

Ladies and Gentlemen – these are the best umpires Major League Baseball has to offer.

that is sad, actually. So many people out of work, and these clowns are still working.

  118. Heyya

Seems as if the ball just scrapped the ground a bit. Yet another close play called wrong.

  119. Lee23

The bunt is NEVER a good idea with 2 strikes!
    That’s Little League! Jeeezus!

  120. Bryan

    fire these blind a holesssss

  121. Brandon AWESOME! (BECAUSE In New York! This song isn't what dreams are made of!)

Oh & Jetes pulling a Robi Cano w/ the bunts.

  122. Paco Dooley

Wow. There have been more crazy plays and bad calls in this postseason across all of the series than I ever recall seeing in years past. That emphasizes Jeters mistake and makes the refs look pretty stupid all in one play.

  123. stacey

yanks continue not to get any breaks…umpires missed it there…mo’s gotta hold it down now

  124. Boston Dave - 4 wins til 27

bases loaded and 1 out and going for the jugular with TEX and AROD up

    or….

    out of the inning

    BS!!!

  125. 27

    Man, that could be huge.

  126. Just 6 more outs!

They didn’t gift anything. He didn’t catch that ball cleanly. Posada was right to run. The umps blew the call as usual.

  127. Rob

That’s the first base umps call, and guess what he blew it, just blew it.

  128. terpbomber (not a bridge jumper)

It’s hard to tell based on the radio broadcast. I’m too lazy to leave the room to see it on TV.

  129. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

    Manuel Parks Pedro

    Posada Parks the third run

    The Pinstripes pilfered!!!!!

  130. pat

Umps inject themselves in the game again?

  131. FeBuch

These umps have absolutely humiliated themselves this postseason, replay is happening folks and if the old guard of umpires cant get their head around it then we have a lovely retirement package to offer, brutal…

  132. PittsburghYankeeFan

    MLB YOU SUCK.

Get some umps who actually can see a play. They got this one so wrong it hurts. Not only did he not catch it, but the throw missed the bag!

Lets see the apology after this game—NOT!

  133. The Ghost

These umps are just stupid. Isn’t Howard’s reaction damning enough? If he thought he caught it on a line he would have just tagged 1st.

  134. Bronx Jeers

Why! Why! Why! Would Howard throw to 2nd if he caught it?

    Incredible!

  135. Denise

bad break there, but regardless, Jorge couldn’t have seen that barely short hop, so why was he running with 1 out anyway?

  136. joe b

Really. where did they cheat or lie. The umpire made the call idiot

  137. stuart a

that was a trap. also jeter is a moron for that bunt with 2 strikes.. seriously how stupid is he.

that was a trap.. the umps incompetence strikes again………

  138. PL

if im Girardi and we lose tonight..You play this game under review by MLB

  139. Kevin Page

Brandon AWESOME! (BECAUSE In New York! This song isn’t what

Another missed call on the field by these umps, WOW
    ————————————————————

That’s a tough call to make even on replay. Umps have a bullseye on them this season, lots of close plays, more than I’ve seen in recent years.

  140. Nick in SF in Larkspur

Sorry, didn’t mean to wake up the latent Torre hatred.
Go back to bashing SJ44, at least he can defend himself (eventually).

  141. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

FYI DT – I posted in the other thread that I missed Matsui’s HR because I took a shower. I felt I had to do something to break the stalemate.

  142. 100 pitches of fun...

Rollins just like Hunter fools the dumb umps. Absoltuely unreal.

  143. Nick D.

um i’m pretty sure the rally would still be happening if the ump didn’t blow that call.

    wow…i’m floored right now.

Thats some bad mojo right there.

    I feel awful.

  144. Bano

    WE GOT SCREWED AGAIN!!! RIOT!!!

  145. Heyya

I was SHOCKED to find out Posada was out. I thought it clearly hit the ground. Oh well.

Bring Instant Replay to the whole game.

  146. nature boy

couldn’t they at least get together like they did last night? check for dirt on the ball?

  147. Bryan

You cant catch the ball near the ground with your glove that way it is freaking impossible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  148. Boston Dave - 4 wins til 27

they have to discuss instant replay in the offseason

that was a blown call and it might just have been too hard to see for the ump.

maybe it’s not his fault, but its a bad call and had a HUGE impact. HUGE.

what’s wrong with instant replay in the playoffs?

  149. JasonR

I hate to say it, but instant replay absolutely needs to be taken seriously by Major League Baseball.

  150. JoeT 28 in 10!!

Why would Howard throw to second if he caught the ball?? He knew he didn’t catch it, it should be bases loaded, 1 out for TEIX and A-ROD!!!!

  151. Abdababdaserser

Why was there no umpire conference on that call?

  152. stuart a

jorge is a terrible baserunner but that was not his fault..

that was a trap, that is why howard threw to second else hit touches the base..

  153. Pepitone

That play could be a game changer, for the Phillies.

  154. The Ghost

Wont the umpires get help now for that double play??

    _____

Exactly, why wasn’t Joe demanding an appeal to the home plate ump

  155. The Other Phil (Don't feed the trolls)

Where is the replay on the giant screen? Humiliate the umps to the crowd.

  156. Brandon AWESOME! (BECAUSE In New York! This song isn't what dreams are made of!)

I’m gonna stay shut on this one, Nathan and the Anaheim 3 blind mice circus. It’s 3-1 AJ your on your own…wait a minute Mo for 6 outs?

  157. Todd

Obviuosly, if Howard thought he caught the ball, he would have just stepped on 1st for the DP….He knew he didn’t catch it on the fly..

  158. Denise

    MOOOOOOO! wow!

  159. Trevor

Stupid call. Howard short hopped the ball and threw wide of second.
    Awful call.

  160. Bano

if he had caught it he would have ran to first u dumb umpires dam old people

  161. FeBuch

Where’s the home plate umpire coming into correct the 1B umpire, he has to be able to see that, I saw it in real time that it hit the ground, just atrocious!

  162. Carl

should have been bases loaded 1 out

  163. 27

C’mon Mo, hold these guys down for 6.

  164. Mike Jaret

    PROTEST…..i would!

  165. Former Box 607

    Shake it off. Mo time.

  166. Betsy

Dumb…………Mo for 6 outs? On the other hand, AJ was sitting for awhile………..I still don’t like this

  167. Brandon AWESOME! (BECAUSE In New York! This song isn't what dreams are made of!)

    I mean Mauer.

  168. Pepitone

I don’t like this move by Joe, no need for Mo here.

“Go back to bashing SJ44, at least he can defend himself (eventually).”

Awwww Nick. I have come on many times to find myself bashed. In fact you’ve been at the head of the bashing on more than a few occasions. So you’re right. He can defend himself if need be. Nice that you’re concerned – about him anyway.

  171. Benny Blanco

Joe is not messing around. Mariano for six.

  172. Denise

apparently they did discuss it when FOX was at commercial, no one overruled

  173. michelle b. - i smell a yankee win!

wow that sucks…and i would have liked to see A.J. out here to get at least one out in the 8th.

  174. Heyya

At this rate, robots will be umpiring games in 2010. :p

  175. terpbomber (not a bridge jumper)

A six out save for Mo in game two. I hope the extra rest balances out the extra mile he has to go tonight.

  176. Bano

6 blind mouse if we lose i dont know what would happen

  177. KF

    Nick
No Torre bashing he pushed all the right buttons with Zimmer.
SJ has his opinions and most are right on……. like the ump’s are disgraceful this season.

  178. Triple Short Of A Cycle

Funny how the umps come together and the call still goes against them

  179. sgolden600

    More crappy umpiring. Jeez

  180. Dan

These are supposed to be baseball’s best umpires…ridiculous. Definitely need instant replay in the playoffs.

If ryan howard caught the ball… why would he throw to second?
    ————————————————————

Because he saw Posada run to 2B. Maybe he didn’t know what the call was going to be, so the safe play is throw to 2nd for the force or the easy tag.

If he tags 1st, he can only get 1 out if they don’t call it a catch.

  219. tex's friend

was howard going for style points on the dp? step on the bag…

    ___

no because he knew he didnt catch it so he was trying to get posada at second. should have been bases loaded one out.

  220. Brandon AWESOME! (BECAUSE In New York! This song isn't what dreams are made of!)

The clearest answer to that being an obvs out was, why would Ryan Howard throw to 2B if it was an out.

W/E I don’t want this being an issue, 3-1 they have to do this. And IDK why Mo is pitching AJ has ran a train to the meat of this order, but w/e.

  227. Heyya

    FeBUch,

I don’t think the umpires could make a call based off of a guys reaction. Howard could have gotten the runner on 3rd base out if he wanted, so they technically can’t make that as their argument. However, I don’t disagree with you. Howard knew it was a short hop.

rivera had to throw 23 pitches that inning.

if he has to pitch to howard, it could have been 4-5 more pitches. maybe more.

if he’s at 30 pitches, he’s possibly not pitching the 9th.

  367. Nick in SF in Larkspur

You make a legit point this time, Trisha, so I’m happy to say so.

  368. Blackaccord

wow.. great joe and Tim.. The umps call on Damon was not a blatant call where as the close double play against utley is a blown call… great…

  369. m

The best thing would be to score lots of runs and then send someone else out for the 9th.

  370. DW

and instead of showing the fact that victorino slid WAAAAAAY out of the baseline they complain about the bangbang call at first….

  379. Bronx Jeers

    Aceves?

  380. Gardner in CF

don’t forget the umpire waiting for rollins to touch 2nd base to call Cano out on the popup, allowing a clueless matsui to get doubled off yesterday

  382. Jockomac

    UH-OH!!

    Aceves warming up.

  383. FeBuch

McCarver wasn’t the one complaining about the call there, he was complaining about H & R, Buck was the one whining about the call…

  384. RS

I’m sorry, but I didn’t like that decision to pitch Rivera for 6 outs.

Yankees nursing a 1 run lead? Go for it. Utley, Howard, Ibanez up in the 8th inning? I’m all in favor.

But a 2 run lead in the 8th inning with Carlos Ruiz leading off couldn’t be handled by ANYONE in the bullpen besides Mo?

I think it’s way more important for him to be well rested against the power hitters in the Phillies lineup (Utley –> Ibanez). Asking him to throw 15-20 pitches and then sit on the bench for an inning before getting to the big boppers is not wise, IMO.

I know Mo is the greatest ever, but I’m concerned that none of our other relievers are pitching important innings with a lead anymore.

    ===================

Hey, my wife’s name is Denise, but she spells it Denice.

What was that about Mo and heart attacks? He does like to make it interesting sometimes doesn’t he?

No, if I’m Girardi, I bring back Burnett for the 8th. He was in a nice zone there.

Now, let’s hope the Mo is not too tired for the 9th.

I recall Torre doing this in 01, and that didn’t turn out well.

  399. Trevor

YES! I was right Aceves should close it out. Of course I was only kidding.

  403. RS

“don’t forget the umpire waiting for rollins to touch 2nd base to call Cano out on the popup, allowing a clueless matsui to get doubled off yesterday”

Not to mention the first base ump made a safe signal on that play, which led Matsui to believe that Cano was safe at 1B and that he had no reason to go back.

  404. tex's friend

that was nowhere near the plate.

And why does Fox make a blown call the game-saving play of the game? Huh?

  409. Nick D.

Sheesh not only is Arod struggling but 6 Ks…thats pretty awful.

  423. FeBuch

  424. Former Box 607

BTW. According to MLB gameday, the only pitch that was a strike to A-Rod was the one he took for called strike 3. The other pitches were all inside, but A-Rod swung at them all. His plate discipline is off. He needs to get the 0 for World Series monkey off his back.

2 out of 3 isn’t bad eh? Matsui with the go-ahead homer, Burnett with 9 K’s. I’m convinced Swish would have had 2-3 walks if he was in the lineup but I think Joe Girardi hates me.

  462. FeBuch

I think Buck’s a lot worse, McCarver does make some good points every now and then, and I dont get the sense he hates the Yankees. Buck has clear vitriol for all New York teams, probably cus everyone here knows he’s an idiot and they don’t kiss his feet just cause he’s related to a great announcer, do you hear that Chip Caray?

  463. Nick D.

Wow. I’m just glad we are sending the greatest out there right now.

Still wish we didn’t have to use him for 6 outs but he IS the best.

  464. Pepitone

    Howard – Werth – Ibanez …

Tough outs for a guy who used 22 pitches last inning.

If he had used Burnett last inning (supposing he gets them out with no damage), then they have a fresh Mo.

Will this be similar to Game 7 of 2001?

    Stay tuned!

    2) who can i complain to about how ridiculously biased buck and mccarver are?

  542. Abdababdaserser

To hear them talk, Steps is batting 1000 against Mo.

  543. Blake

oh yes, lets talk about how great Stairs is, Stairs is older than dirt and if he gets another hit right here it will be plain luck

  544. trisha - OPPC forever - (new lucky picture from last day at the old Stadium) BRING ON THE GHOSTS!

Hopeful Buck spouting all his stats.

Meanwhile I’m quaking in my boots…

  545. yankees to win!

    Trisha,

How many handles do you use on this board?

  546. Todd

Stairs looks like a fat beer league softball player…

  547. Mrun

listening to Joe Buck makes me want to throw up in my mouth. It was funny at first now its just sickening

  548. FeBuch

I think they’re going outside and low here…

  549. Trevor

People please enough about the announcers. Just mute your TV.

  550. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

    Mo wields his cutter

    Cano shows his Werth–two outs!

    Just one Mo to go!

  551. terpbomber (not a bridge jumper)

    Yes!

    WHAT game one?

  552. Motive

    1-1

  553. Jockomac

    Good night all.

  561. PL

Come on Cole throw him the pitch outside….Who are you????

  562. Boston Dave - 4 wins til 27

    thank you Good AJ!!!

thank you very very much :)

  563. Blake

    Rivera is ridiculous

  564. Orlando Chris

Good game for us, but there’s a dangerous footnote here – the Yankees had trouble putting the ball into play, again. All but two of the outs made by the Yankees were either by K or fly out. (The two exceptions being Molina grounding out 6-3 in the 5th, and Posada being tagged out 3-4 on the blown call in the 7th.) Besides the two jacks, they didn’t even hit any liners until the seventh.

Other than that doom and gloom note, YAY us! =)

  565. Mike Jaret

    bigtime!

  566. NYY626

    oh thank Mo!

  567. tex's friend

lets hear buck and mccarver talk about how great pedro was all night. even though the yankees won…

  568. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

    Securing Game II

    Mariano Rivera

    There is no other!!!!!

  569. JasonR

Did anyone else notice the conversation with Werth and Howard in the dugout, with both of them making hand motions? It’s like they were saying “Can you believe how that thing moves?”

    Rivera is the greatest.

  570. antisocial scrooge

    mo is a beat.

  571. WS

Great win! Now let’s hope the bats come alive before we get a 2003 Redux

  572. The Ghost

Gotta love that set up pitch that Mo gave Stairs. Had him thinking about retirement on a beach somewhere with all his teeth intact.

  573. Boston Dave - 4 wins til 27

    39 pitches for Mariano

  574. Nick D.

    1-1

    Yea baby!

    The greatest comes through

I’m surprised Fox didn’t give player of the game to Pedro. One would have thought that listening to the game.

  575. trisha - OPPC forever - (new lucky picture from last day at the old Stadium) BRING ON THE GHOSTS!

This has to be the biggest upset in the troll world!
We won a game against the amazing awesome Phillies.

Where are you trolls? Come celebrate with us!

  579. FeBuch

Yanks have played terribly besides our starting pitching, and even CC wasn’t primo, and we’re tied at 1. Huge win and as of now the WS MVP is one AJ BURNETT!! Lets go to Philly and smack around that punk Hamels!!

  580. CD

  581. vb03

Time to go to Philly and take 2/3.

that’s how you know he can hit.

no one looks like that and is in the major leagues if they can’t.

  583. Joekuh - looking for a cinfifewnse boost!!

Why all the doom and gloom if we won? AJ, HELL of a game pitched tonight.

  584. CD

    YES!!! CONFIDENCE!!

    1) jeter would not have bunted with 0,1, or 2 strikes unless the manager asked him to._

    __________________________

Looking at Girardi’s face after Jeter bunted out, I think he called that one. Jeter may try bunting on his own, but I can’t think he would ever try it with two strikes. He just has too much baseball smarts for that. Jeter may cover for his manager, but you could tell from the body language and look on Girardi’s face that he was the one who called for that.

  587. trisha - OPPC forever - (new lucky picture from last day at the old Stadium) BRING ON THE GHOSTS!

“Do you think Buck and McCarver share a room when they are on the road???”

Yeah but I don’t think there’ll be any action tonight. They’re too depressed.

    LOL

he went too far inside on the next pitch but set him up nicely on the strikeout pitch

  590. Blackaccord

Good job yanks… 1-1 looks much better now particularly with A-rod not hitting… Offense will wake up against Hamels.. 2-1 lead will be awesome with CC going in game 4…

  591. alexm

M=did Mark Grace just call Tex “Tom”?

  592. Betsy

Congrats to AJ on his first post-season win and the biggest game he may ever pitch.

  593. 100 pitches of fun...

Buck and McCarver can take off their Phillies skirts and put down the pom poms. Those 2 are an absolute joke.

  594. Blake

AJ showed how good he can be tonight, if that burnett would show up every time out then he could win a Cy Young..

  595. FeBuch

Anyone actually worried that Mo threw 39 pitches? If we had to play tomorrow maybe, but we dont! So it’s all good, he’ll be ready for Saturday, obviously not to go 2, but he can still shut it down, definitely get 4 outs if he has to…

  596. The Ghost

Game 1 and 2 were like mirror versions of each other weren’t they? I’ll bet there are a lot of Philly fans complaining that they just didn’t come to play tonight like Yankee fans were last night. Now the Yankees have to take game 1 in Philly and the pressure will be squarely back on the PHillies.

  597. CD

It must be killing BIG FAT Abe-Fraud how well AJ pitched.

  598. Michael T

Pedro gave up 3 ER in 6 innings, with 2 bombs. 5th starter stuff. And McCarver waxes like he’s 60s era Bob Gibson. And that’s against a Yankee lineup with a bottom 3 of Hairston-Melky-Molina.

  599. trisha - OPPC forever - (new lucky picture from last day at the old Stadium) BRING ON THE GHOSTS!

Just trisha. I have enough to do to fight the good fight with that one! Why?

definitely think mlb should let the home announcers call their games.
    +1
    great idea
    ==================
They used to do that in the old days, back when the series was the SERIES. NBC would always have one of the home announcers do one to three innings each.

Joe’s dad, Jack, was head and shoulders above his kid. Joe’s arrogance is what makes his games so annoying.

AJ grats on your first career postseason victory

  603. Blake

Game 3 is huge. If the Yankees can win Game 3 then they will likely have CC against Blanton in Game 4 for a chance to go up 3-1..

  604. Terry from NH

AJ & MO ..What else can you say.. These two did a great job today and picked up the slack for the lack of hitting

  605. FeBuch

Holy moses, look at Ozzie’s plush jacket! What a joke…

  606. Todd

Stairs does NOT have a typical steroid body……..he has the typical beer gut……

  607. Mike in Harrisburg

AJ took care of business. Fantastic. 3 more wins..

  608. Fan mail from some flounder

Looks like Utley forgot his shampoo for the road trip.

Is Mat Stairs the walrus? Goo Goo Ga Joob…

  609. Pepitone

OK, now take at least one in Philly, then close it out in New York. Better yet, take 2 of 3 in Philly, and make my prediction come true.

I still don’t like the 6 out saves for Mo, that is going to come back to haunt Girardi if he can’t get Hughes, or someone else, straightened out to be the bridge.

  610. JC

    IN MO WE TRUST

  611. Derek

I’m pumped that the Yankees won tonight, but Girardi’s mismanagement of the bullpen must be addressed. He’s terrified to use any of the bp guys other than Mo. If he clearly defined roles in the pen, then perhaps guys like Hughes and Joba might get comfortable, instead of being randomly used for one guy and then tossed aside for Damaso F–king Marte.
Girardi is going to blowout Mo in one of these games and then we’ll have the luxury of seeing Brian Bruney in a big spot. Awesome.

  612. Brian in 702

the anti Yankee tilt from McCarver is getting ridiculous

but at least I learned that Melky doesn’t have a strong arm, lol!

  613. TL

On the DP in the 7th inning…

Why did Howard throw to 2nd base for the DP. All he had to do was touch 1st base. Because Howard knew he caught it on a short hop and he was trying to get the lead runner.

    We definitely need instant replay.

  614. Andrew

AJ and Mo were HUGE tonight, in a must-win game they shut down a high-powered offense that was firing on all cylinders. I like Andy at Citizens Bank, Cole Hamels may have a better winning percentage at home, but that ain’t saying much. I’m thinking, with some luck, we take 2 in philly and come home up 3-1.

You mean 3-2. I agree. That is what I am hoping for as well.

  616. Datahead

Regarding Howard’s catch. Utley was safe at first on the double play. Even the umps agreed with that after the game. And none of the called strikes on Ryan Howard’s at bats were anywhere close to being strikes.
