World Series Game 2: Phillies at Yankees (III)

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Oct 29, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

UPDATE, 10:32 p.m.: Probably won’t be a ton of updates as I try to write for the paper’s first deadline, but wanted to give you guys a fresh thread for the final few innings. Yankees trying to close it out and draw level in the series.

UPDATE, 10:38 p.m.: I know we all love the Captain and everything, but that was among the silliest plays I’ve seen in a long while. Sometimes it just feels like Jeter refuses to acknowledge that he’s, you know, a really good hitter and pretty much shouldn’t be bunting in a big situation ever, let alone with two strikes. Just crazy.

UPDATE, 10:45 p.m.: That was very strange. It sure looked like Howard didn’t make the catch on Damon’s liner, but the umpire called it a catch and then Howard doubled off Cabrera at second base for a double play. After a huddle, the umps upheld the original call. To me, replays looked like it took a short-hop into Howard’s glove. Either way, Mo is on now for six outs.

I definitely don’t want AJ to come out for the next inning – unless this turns into a huge inning. I don’t want anything to happen to ruin his outing.

  8. Betsy October 29th, 2009 at 10:35 pm

Randy, that may be so, but tonight’s game is the only one that counts at this point……..I wouldn’t push Mo. Thanks for the info, though – it’s good stuff. What’s your take on AJ? I mean, besides that he was great….what did you see that you didn’t see in other starts?

  9. PL October 29th, 2009 at 10:35 pm

    yea Jorge good stuff

  21. The Ghost October 29th, 2009 at 10:36 pm

Now really, could the Molina start have worked out any better? Molina plays stellar D, Burnett pitches a gem and Posada pinches for Molina and gets a big rbi. Talk about your perfect world.

  22. 100 pitches of fun... October 29th, 2009 at 10:37 pm

I would bunt here otherwise Jeter is the DP king.

Three hits in a row!!! Lets keep it going!! And Joe Buck is the only person on earth that thinks it’s intriguing that Girardi pinch hit for Molina, that’s the most obvious move in the planet…

  29. Brandon AWESOME! (BECAUSE In New York! This song isn't what dreams are made of!) October 29th, 2009 at 10:37 pm

    Jetes can’t bunt.

  30. KF October 29th, 2009 at 10:37 pm

I thought I read tonight that he didn’t have a clue?

  31. Boston Dave - 4 wins til 27 October 29th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

    trisha or anyone else,

I have tickets for Game 5 in Philly if I want them for face value.

    OR….

I can forfeit those for probably a 70% chance of getting tickets for Game 6 or 7 for face value

    what would you do??

  32. trisha - OPPC forever - (new lucky picture from last day at the old Stadium) BRING ON THE GHOSTS! October 29th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

Hey Bets, what do you think of ole Girardi now? EVERY move he made has paid off. I would think you have to cut him some slack now. You can’t really think all of this happened in spite of him!

    ;)

  33. Gardner in CF October 29th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

it was a routine throw. nothing special.

  34. Trevor October 29th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

Jeter can’t bunt now? Wow

  35. Betsy October 29th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

The only thing about AJ in the 8th is that he’s going to have sat for awhile…….still, I don’t want Mo for 6 and I don’t trust anyone else in the pen

  36. 100 pitches of fun... October 29th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

Great job by Jeter. 100% wasted at bat with no one out.

  37. kimoinsd October 29th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

    What the fudge Jete?

  38. Bryan October 29th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

why in the world is he bunting at all

    Damon is NEXT!

  39. Just 6 more outs! October 29th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

    Stupid, stupid, stupid!!

  40. Gardner in CF October 29th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

not a bad play. really, nothing to lose. not like they’re losing by 2 runs.

  41. michelle b. - i smell a yankee win! October 29th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

    wow jetes….ughh

  42. stacey October 29th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

total wasted atbat by jeter..that just didnt make sense

  43. Jeff NJ October 29th, 2009 at 10:38 pm

    ouch Jeter.

  44. FeBuch October 29th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

Holy crap, did Jeter really just take an 0-1 pitch bunting and then foul out on an 0-2 bunt?? Jeter’s never looked that bad ever, but we’re all human…

  45. PL October 29th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

    well that changes this inning

  46. DT - OPPC member October 29th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

    Jeter bunting with two strikes?

    Now I’ve seen everything. :-(

  47. stacey October 29th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

a big hit would be nice by damon right here..

  48. The Ghost October 29th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

No way, should Tim McCarver EVER question ANYTHING Derek Jeter does. McCarver, your not even qualified to look at Jeter’s jock strap. Just be quiet and look away.

  49. m October 29th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

Thank goodness we-re up by 2 (thnx Jorge). Otherwise that would be an argh moment.

  50. NYY626 October 29th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

Things I love: when i go to a new thread and there are TWENTY SEVEN comments ;)

Things I do not love: Jeters obsession with bunting.

  51. 100 pitches of fun... October 29th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

That was absolutely ridiculous. 0-2 and your bunting??? If your Molina maybe, Jeter makes no sense.

  52. Brandon AWESOME! (BECAUSE In New York! This song isn't what dreams are made of!) October 29th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

DO NOT, I REPEAT..DO NOT BLAME GI JOE FOR THAT!

    JETES WTH!!!

  53. Motown Yankee October 29th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

Jeter bunting at all let alone with 2 strikes is the dumbest thing EVER! Just hit the damn ball and stop over thinking

  54. Denise October 29th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

take Game 6 or 7 in NY, much more fun too!

  55. Gardner in CF October 29th, 2009 at 10:39 pm

With Jeter that’s a high percentage that he gets it down. Good idea, bad execution.

  56. Just 6 more outs! October 29th, 2009 at 10:40 pm

Bad game for Jeter. But of course all anyone will talk about tomorrow is A-Rod’s strikeouts.

  57. Nick D. October 29th, 2009 at 10:40 pm

Anyone have any idea what Jeter was thinking there?

    That is so unlike him…

    What the heck was that?

  58. Johnny D. October 29th, 2009 at 10:40 pm

Finally some action. This is the team we’ve seen all year. Finally, finally, finally.

  59. Nick in SF in Larkspur October 29th, 2009 at 10:40 pm

Girardi’s moves have been pretty good this inning, I wonder if he’s getting pointers from Joe Torre. He was always the master at that kind of stuff.

  60. zmaster!! October 29th, 2009 at 10:40 pm

that’s jetes decision.. not joe g’s

  61. KF October 29th, 2009 at 10:40 pm

    is that you Pete Abe?

  63. trisha - OPPC forever - (new lucky picture from last day at the old Stadium) BRING ON THE GHOSTS! October 29th, 2009 at 10:40 pm

BD, that is really a tough call. If it were I, I think I would wait for the Stadium. But that’s because I would have no desire to be in Philly for the game. I’d much rather see it at home.

You play the odds of course if you wait – but I cannot imagine that we don’t take one of the next three games in Philly.

    Tough call BD.

  64. ariel October 29th, 2009 at 10:40 pm

McCarver was right…”a bad play by Derek Jeter”. Highly unusual but true. Let’s see if Johnny D’s efforts for a contract move him up a notch.

  65. Nick in NJ October 29th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

I have to think Jeter isn’t that dumb. Had to be called from the bench. You are a career .312 postseason hitter. Work the count and swing the bat. Argh.

  66. terpbomber (not a bridge jumper) October 29th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

I would have liked it better if Jeter just swung at a third strike rather than doing the riskier bunt move.

  67. Blackaccord October 29th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

Jeter with a dumb play.. The first two strikes it looked like he was trying to pull the bat from the bunt.. That was a terrible AB by jeter..

  68. m October 29th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

Pete’s somewhere laughing about Jeter bunting right now . Is he still covering the series?

  69. CD October 29th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

    AJ IS A GOLDEN GOD

  70. 100 pitches of fun... October 29th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

That was very odd. The last pitch looked like a curveball or something just swing away at point.

  71. KF October 29th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

    Nick,
Do you mean Don Zimmer’s version of Joe Torre?

  72. Boston Dave - 4 wins til 27 October 29th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

“take Game 6 or 7 in NY, much more fun too!”

    ————

thanks Denise. I’m leaning towards that but there is no guarantee I get them – just a good chance.

The Game 5 tickets are selling for $800 a piece on stubhub – $175 a piece for me.

    I’ll probably roll the dice.

  73. Pepitone October 29th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

Girardi, do not bring in Mo for a six out stint, it isn’t necessary now. You have a cushion, you might try Robertson in that bridge role, see how he does.

I hope Girardi wasn’t the one who instructed Jetes to bunt.

  74. Denise October 29th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

that AB was a buzz killer for me, totally

  75. Trevor October 29th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

The bunt is a good idea, he just did a poor job of executing.

  76. The Ghost October 29th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

Damon will pick Jete up, you watch.

  77. Triple Short Of A Cycle October 29th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

    Nick in SF in Larkspur,

Really??? like not bunting on Schilling and not trying to steal on Wakefield wild pitch after wild pitch?

  78. PittsburghYankeeFan October 29th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

$20 million yearly for that at bat? The Yankees could get that from Austin Jackson in AAA. No–how about Kei Igawa batting.

That has to be one of the most atrocious WS at bats ever!

What a clown! You know how to put the ball in play, and you bunt a third strike on a guy who can’t find the plate.

    Excellent work, Captain of Bums.

  79. 100 pitches of fun... October 29th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

Maybe Damon can actually get a hit here…

  80. Bronx Jeers October 29th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

    redeem yourself Damon you jerk

  82. Gardner in CF October 29th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

If Jeter got that down most of you wouldn’t be calling it a bad idea.

  83. JasonR October 29th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

Come on Johnny. Do you want to play here next year?

  85. Boston Dave - 4 wins til 27 October 29th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

my thinking too trisha… its just that I could end up with nothing. But I want to be there for the 4th Yankee victory so bad that it’s prob worth the risk.

  86. Kevin Page October 29th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

Michael Kay muse t bfuming right now. He hates when the Yankees sacrifice to begin with, but a good hitter like Jeter and on an 0-2 count. Lord have mercy when he starts his next radio show.

Don’t be surprised if he is frothing at the mouth on the post game show.

  87. FeBuch October 29th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

    Motown

I totally agree, Jeter’s a great hitter, we could’ve blown the doors off this thing if we weren’t trying so hard to advance the runners.

  88. Paco Dooley October 29th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

Huge mistake by a hot hitter like Jeter. Why bother bunting there when he has a reasonable shot at an RBI via a hit?

  89. Nick D. October 29th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

one of those smack home runs to right field would be awesome right now.

    Come on Johnny!

  97. ariel October 29th, 2009 at 10:44 pm

Nick was joking….Torre’s astute in-game moves? After Zim left, Torre literally went for a game long snooze.

that is sad, actually. So many people out of work, and these clowns are still working.

  118. Heyya October 29th, 2009 at 10:45 pm

Seems as if the ball just scrapped the ground a bit. Yet another close play called wrong.

  119. Lee23 October 29th, 2009 at 10:45 pm

  122. Paco Dooley October 29th, 2009 at 10:45 pm

Wow. There have been more crazy plays and bad calls in this postseason across all of the series than I ever recall seeing in years past. That emphasizes Jeters mistake and makes the refs look pretty stupid all in one play.

  123. stacey October 29th, 2009 at 10:45 pm

These umps have absolutely humiliated themselves this postseason, replay is happening folks and if the old guard of umpires cant get their head around it then we have a lovely retirement package to offer, brutal…

  132. PittsburghYankeeFan October 29th, 2009 at 10:45 pm

    MLB YOU SUCK.

Get some umps who actually can see a play. They got this one so wrong it hurts. Not only did he not catch it, but the throw missed the bag!

Lets see the apology after this game—NOT!

  133. The Ghost October 29th, 2009 at 10:45 pm

These umps are just stupid. Isn’t Howard’s reaction damning enough? If he thought he caught it on a line he would have just tagged 1st.

  134. Bronx Jeers October 29th, 2009 at 10:45 pm

Why! Why! Why! Would Howard throw to 2nd if he caught it?

    Incredible!

  135. Denise October 29th, 2009 at 10:45 pm

bad break there, but regardless, Jorge couldn’t have seen that barely short hop, so why was he running with 1 out anyway?

what’s wrong with instant replay in the playoffs?

  149. JasonR October 29th, 2009 at 10:46 pm

    I’m going to throw up.

  252. Yankee Trader October 29th, 2009 at 10:55 pm

    Goodnight.

  253. Dan October 29th, 2009 at 10:55 pm

A little above average? Do your homework Tim. Melky has a great arm.

  254. FeBuch October 29th, 2009 at 10:55 pm

If Mo can get out of this one, then the 9th should be pretty easy…

  255. DW October 29th, 2009 at 10:55 pm

Let’s go Mo! Buckle down and get these guys!

  256. Heyya October 29th, 2009 at 10:55 pm

I had to take a double take at the screen to make sure I saw Mo in the 8th, I was surprised. AJ could have stayed in, if he got another run, if we got 2 more runs, than even in a small jam he would stay in. This changes the whole complexion of the game.

  257. Triple Short Of A Cycle October 29th, 2009 at 10:55 pm

  260. Abdababdaserser October 29th, 2009 at 10:55 pm

This is why its a bad idea to have Mo in for two innings. He is going to be shot. Too many pitches being thrown.

  269. Former Box 607 October 29th, 2009 at 10:56 pm

The missed call by the Ump was ball one to Rollins (first pitch of the AB) it was a strike. But it was still a great AB by Rollins. Now Mo’s warming up.

  270. Triple Short Of A Cycle October 29th, 2009 at 10:56 pm

Mo can’t pitch the 9th, we need him on Saturday.

  330. Heyya October 29th, 2009 at 11:01 pm

These announcers are crazy. The reason they didn’t want to send the runners is so they don’t have a potential strike em’ out throw em’ out double play. Either way it’s a tough call. They decided not to run them that time, which is reasonable. They make it seem like a terrible move by the Phillies. There are benefits to doing both.

  331. FeBuch October 29th, 2009 at 11:01 pm

  342. Heyya October 29th, 2009 at 11:02 pm

Mo strikes out just about a guy per inning, so it’s no like he is known for the grounders, other than for broken bats. These announcers should become Managers themselves.

Game 5 is also Cliff Lee against, possibly, Chad Gaudin.

I was saying that McCarver has not right to ever question Jeter, not me. He’s a career .271 hitter and a hack sports commentator who is wrong about 80% of the time. And for the record at 17 I was playing for the city championship and if it wasn’t for a prematurely broken down body I had every belief that I was the heir apparent to Ricky Henderson in CF for the Yankees. rivera had to throw 23 pitches that inning.

if he has to pitch to howard, it could have been 4-5 more pitches. maybe more.

if he’s at 30 pitches, he’s possibly not pitching the 9th.

Yankees nursing a 1 run lead? Go for it. Utley, Howard, Ibanez up in the 8th inning? I’m all in favor.

But a 2 run lead in the 8th inning with Carlos Ruiz leading off couldn’t be handled by ANYONE in the bullpen besides Mo?

I think it’s way more important for him to be well rested against the power hitters in the Phillies lineup (Utley –> Ibanez). Asking him to throw 15-20 pitches and then sit on the bench for an inning before getting to the big boppers is not wise, IMO.

I know Mo is the greatest ever, but I’m concerned that none of our other relievers are pitching important innings with a lead anymore.

Hey, my wife’s name is Denise, but she spells it Denice.

What was that about Mo and heart attacks? He does like to make it interesting sometimes doesn’t he?

No, if I’m Girardi, I bring back Burnett for the 8th. He was in a nice zone there.

Now, let’s hope the Mo is not too tired for the 9th.

I recall Torre doing this in 01, and that didn’t turn out well.

BTW. According to MLB gameday, the only pitch that was a strike to A-Rod was the one he took for called strike 3. The other pitches were all inside, but A-Rod swung at them all. His plate discipline is off. He needs to get the 0 for World Series monkey off his back.

2 out of 3 isn’t bad eh? Matsui with the go-ahead homer, Burnett with 9 K’s. I’m convinced Swish would have had 2-3 walks if he was in the lineup but I think Joe Girardi hates me.

    Howard – Werth – Ibanez …

Tough outs for a guy who used 22 pitches last inning.

If he had used Burnett last inning (supposing he gets them out with no damage), then they have a fresh Mo.

Will this be similar to Game 7 of 2001?

  564. Orlando Chris October 29th, 2009 at 11:24 pm

Good game for us, but there’s a dangerous footnote here – the Yankees had trouble putting the ball into play, again. All but two of the outs made by the Yankees were either by K or fly out. (The two exceptions being Molina grounding out 6-3 in the 5th, and Posada being tagged out 3-4 on the blown call in the 7th.) Besides the two jacks, they didn’t even hit any liners until the seventh.

Other than that doom and gloom note, YAY us! =)

    __________________________

Looking at Girardi’s face after Jeter bunted out, I think he called that one. Jeter may try bunting on his own, but I can’t think he would ever try it with two strikes. He just has too much baseball smarts for that. Jeter may cover for his manager, but you could tell from the body language and look on Girardi’s face that he was the one who called for that.

Anyone actually worried that Mo threw 39 pitches? If we had to play tomorrow maybe, but we dont! So it’s all good, he’ll be ready for Saturday, obviously not to go 2, but he can still shut it down, definitely get 4 outs if he has to…

  596. The Ghost October 29th, 2009 at 11:29 pm

Game 1 and 2 were like mirror versions of each other weren’t they? I’ll bet there are a lot of Philly fans complaining that they just didn’t come to play tonight like Yankee fans were last night. Now the Yankees have to take game 1 in Philly and the pressure will be squarely back on the PHillies.

Pedro gave up 3 ER in 6 innings, with 2 bombs. 5th starter stuff. And McCarver waxes like he’s 60s era Bob Gibson. And that’s against a Yankee lineup with a bottom 3 of Hairston-Melky-Molina.

OK, now take at least one in Philly, then close it out in New York. Better yet, take 2 of 3 in Philly, and make my prediction come true.

I still don’t like the 6 out saves for Mo, that is going to come back to haunt Girardi if he can’t get Hughes, or someone else, straightened out to be the bridge.

  610. JC October 29th, 2009 at 11:35 pm

    IN MO WE TRUST

  611. Derek October 30th, 2009 at 12:00 am

I’m pumped that the Yankees won tonight, but Girardi’s mismanagement of the bullpen must be addressed. He’s terrified to use any of the bp guys other than Mo. If he clearly defined roles in the pen, then perhaps guys like Hughes and Joba might get comfortable, instead of being randomly used for one guy and then tossed aside for Damaso F–king Marte.
Girardi is going to blowout Mo in one of these games and then we’ll have the luxury of seeing Brian Bruney in a big spot. Awesome.

  612. Brian in 702 October 30th, 2009 at 12:00 am

the anti Yankee tilt from McCarver is getting ridiculous

but at least I learned that Melky doesn’t have a strong arm, lol!

  613. TL October 30th, 2009 at 12:13 am

On the DP in the 7th inning…

Why did Howard throw to 2nd base for the DP. All he had to do was touch 1st base. Because Howard knew he caught it on a short hop and he was trying to get the lead runner.

    We definitely need instant replay.

  614. Andrew October 30th, 2009 at 12:45 am

AJ and Mo were HUGE tonight, in a must-win game they shut down a high-powered offense that was firing on all cylinders. I like Andy at Citizens Bank, Cole Hamels may have a better winning percentage at home, but that ain’t saying much. I’m thinking, with some luck, we take 2 in philly and come home up 3-1.

  616. Datahead October 30th, 2009 at 4:19 pm

Regarding Howard’s catch. Utley was safe at first on the double play. Even the umps agreed with that after the game. And none of the called strikes on Ryan Howard’s at bats were anywhere close to being strikes.
