World Series Game 3: Yankees at Phillies (III)
UPDATE, 11:36 p.m.: Lot of Chads in this series — Chad Durbin, Chad Gaudin, Chad Jennings. Let’s keep it straight: Durbin is coming in to pitch right now for the Phillies, Jennings is sitting next to me drinking Turkey Hill iced tea (with a dog wearing a scarf and sunglasses on the bottle).
UPDATE, 11:39 p.m.: And it’s raining again. Not terribly hard (yet) but noticeable.
UPDATE, 11:44 p.m.: Little surprised to see the Phillies not put Rodriguez on here with first base open.
UPDATE, 11:47 p.m.: Well, that’s one way to put him on. A-Rod is hit by a pitch for the second time tonight and he did not look happy about it as he went to first base.
UPDATE, 11:53 p.m.: That’s it for Pettitte, as Joba Chamberlain comes in to start the seventh. Get comfortable, too – Girardi already has Marte warming up behind him.
UPDATE, 12:07 a.m.: Happy November, Hideki Matsui. That’s his second homer of the series. By the way, Matsui does it right – he doesn’t stand at home plate, he doesn’t do anything with his bat. He just hits it and starts running around the bases. He’s all class.
UPDATE, 12:20 a.m.: Chad here with what might be a dumb question. Who do you send out for the ninth? It’s a four-run lead, and it would certainly be nice to have Mariano Rivera well rested in case he’s needed for more than three outs in Games 4 and 5. Would you consider Phil Hughes in this spot, knowing you could still go to Rivera if things get dangerous? Sam says no way, you don’t mess around in the World Series. I’m torn.

“Pablo Sandival — if you want to count the Panda as a catcher.”
I do not.
Does Andy pitch in the 7th ???
ps I hate Joe Buck!
I love Turkey Hill Iced Tea!
That Turkey Hill iced tea is great!
Time to at least double our lead….GO YANKEES….Philies are about to be staring down the barrel of a 3-1 Series hole after CC finishes shutting them down tomorrow night !
I guess Robertson, then Marte for the 2 lefties then Joba…
I think Pettite will come out and they’ll go batter to batter with him.
“Does Andy pitch in the 7th ???”
no i think
Let’s keep in going. Nine more outs!
I officially do not like Werth.
Its very quiet there now
SHHHHH
Job-er getting loose in the pen…
michelle,
Sandoval isn’t a catcher.
he’s started 12 games there in his career, barely any this year, and may never start there again.
boy can hit pretty well though
Let’s hope the trolls get lost between the last thread and this one.
I’m getting so frustrated at my computer right now!!!!!!!
what the hell is Damon swinging at ?
Well Joba is warming up so that answers the question. I would go to Robertson but I know Girardi doesn’t trust him and for some odd reason trusts Joba more.
MPB Johnny Damon = Really Awesome
Good walk, Johnny-D! Come on, Tex, you’re due a hit today!
i think andy goes back out with a quick hook, if we could get joba to the 8th that would be best case scenario…no hughes…not tonight….
Way to go Damon!
Does anyone else see the “how to get rid of plumber’s crack” ad at the top of the page? WTH
Let’s steal a base here
Not a good matchup for Durbin.
my point is the yanks are lucky to have a catcher who gives as much offense as posada does..it is big advantage that most teams do not have..he is a subpar defensive catcher but his offensive production goes a long way and really expands the line up
“I officially do not like Werth.”
Me either, especially since he looks like Edge from WWE. I still haven’t forgiven him for shaving Kurt Angle’s head in 2003.
Raining hard now.
Come on Tex hack one out!!!
Looks like Joba to Rollins, Victorino and Utley?
I feel like we’re about to see a Teix Message
Erica–I tried to post this before but my computer wouldn’t let me. Your friend will probably try to get out of it somehow with a loophole in the bet or something. I think that’s funny, though.
Werth helped me win 1100 bucks this year so I can’t hate him too much

I have a free Black Taco banner
Did any one get one today???
Andy is definitely out of the game, there’s no way we can give the top of the order another look at him, gonna be very interesting to see who the first one is out of the pen, I’m gonna guess Joba or Hughes, prolly Joba…
the Yankees will score more runs tonight and the young guys in the ‘pen will get retribution by shutting down the Phillies in the 7th and 8th.
You heard it here first.
Turkey Hill iced tea = way better than Snapple
Time to feast on their BP…
Durbin has lost the strike zone…no swinging until a strike… come on tex
Another BS strike call…

No, I think he would really do it
A howling Werthwolf
“BOO!” not “Feliz Navidad”
Pettitte, peril, chills
No rain … no rain … no rain …
Durbin just got helped out there big time. By Tex and the ump.
Rain shouldn’t be an issue…just some spotty showers rolling through.
I enjoy the Truth Squad…i hope your right
Interesting, I was wondering who would start the 7th, and if it was a rightie like Joba, if Girardi would only let him face 2 hitters before going to Marte. Decisions, decisions.
Yeah. Andy is at 104 pitches. I think Joe will take him out. He’ll go with Joba for as long as he can.
ooooohhhhh he might bave been gone.
MPB Johnny Damon can do ANYTHNG
Good Erica, change the topic from baseball to tacos during the 7th inning of a close WS game.
“Me either, especially since he looks like Edge from WWE. I still haven’t forgiven him for shaving Kurt Angle’s head in 2003.”
oh my god..he really does look like edge..i never noticed that…i have no problem with werth though..he is pretty good..
Tex got jobbed on the 2-0 pitch and then swings at ball four?
Good call by the ump!
Not sure what Teix was swinging it… Durbin is struggling to throw strikes…
Damn Teix has issues w/ the breaking ball.
Finally a good call on a close play
Nice steal
good call for once by the umps!
It’s unreal how all of these hitters can not stop swinging at off speed pitches in the dirt. I have never seen them chase so much garbage.
I would walk hiim…
Erica–Well, I guess that’s determination. Or a very strong love of the Yankees. Or both.
Girardi is gonna go to Robertson, I think
then Coke or Marte
you do not pitch to arod here …..wow bad move manuel
Valerie G, the site is being very buggy right now, it might not be your computer.
Man, Tex just can’t hit the slow stuff.
Wow they’re actually pitching to A-Rod.

Don’t be mean, I was just answering her question. And I was curious
I think the amount of Thai food I had tonight could feed a small army
Other than Pedro’s changeup, that is
GOOD CUT!
Mauer is the best hitting catcher by far
then McCann, Posada, and Victor Martinez
Wieters will be there very soon
that was a pitch to hit there
Wow, with first base open and two outs, he is going right at A-Rod.
This Philly strike zone is absoltuely unreal….
Strike zone is kind of erratic…
Nick–thanks. I was all set to start yelling at my computer
. Now I don’t have to.
Oh NO!! Not the Horrible Hankies!!
That is really not cool at all
Maybe Posada can get some of the vibes that Swisher’s been channeling.
intentional??????
Keep throwin at arod. Morons.
does he go right after Posada?
or throw 3 straight intentional balls first to make it 3-0?
arod is TICKED!!!
Okay Posada…It’s time for you to do some damage here….
Jimmy – do you own amazon.com?
Can you get me a discount?
Chuck is getting nervous.
Can we get a focused Jorge here??????????????????????
Jorge may come through here…
When you don’t feel like coming after Arod with another pitch just hit him. I get the idea…
What do they have against AROD?
i know not really, but still
Posada owes us all and most importantly his teammates
Ok that’s twice!
Make him pay, Jorge!
I think it might be time for Jorge to shut all of us up who’ve been getting on him tonight, remind us why he’s a big time Yankee…
I think Durbin is like their version of Bruney… throwing a lot of balls..
How about a 2 out hit?!?!?
If the yanks get 2 more runs. Joba needs to hit someone.
This is the time for one of Posada’s bloop doubles.
any phillies gonna get hit?
wth…that was at the ankles…
“Mauer is the best hitting catcher by far
then McCann, Posada, and Victor Martinez”
How was McCann better than Posada? He had lower offensive stats than Jorge in BA, OBP, SLG and OPS this season.
ARod is going to get hit because they are obsessed with throwing pitches on the inside
Don’t make an out here, Posada, or it could get even more idiotic-er in here.
Posada could make this game a lot more comfortable here.
lets go
cmon JoPo!!
Take some more, Jorge. If you can’t get a hit, at least get on base!
the home plate umpire is the same one from first base last game…no wonder he doesnt know what his strike zone is, he doesnt even know what a catch is…
Nick in SF October 31st, 2009 at 11:44 pm

any phillies gonna get hit?
I hope not, I want to win the game
“If the yanks get 2 more runs. Joba needs to hit someone.”
I was thinking the same thing. Utley or Howard is getting plunked this weekend.
He should just pitch to Cano he will make out very easy.
for tomorrow’s game, i would flip swish + cano in the lineup…
Bases loaded, please!
Jason R,
I meant those guys are teh second tier.
I didn’t say McCann was better, though looking at his #s this season, out of context, is not smart. He is an excellent hitter.
now you get one to drive jorge..
That was ball four
Strike zone is unreal.
that was a strike?
strike 1 – ball
strike 2 — ball
Wow, that is a foot outside
BS call
Ugh
POSADA!!!!!
Got the run back!
JORGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Woooooooooo! YEEEEAH!
JORGEEEEE!
Yay, Jorge!!!
Convenient time to expand the strike zone for Phillies pitchers. Thank god it hasn’t affected the game yet, but it very well could.
Posada finally delivers
JORGE….finally!!!! thank you!!
Yay, Posada! He was due for something good..

Good job Posada !
thanks ump
your atrocious “ball” call gave Jorgy the RBI
Yes, Jorge! Way to silence all your enemies! Yeah!
suck on that lemon joe buck
WOW. YEA POSADA
Hip hip!
thanks for calling that outside pitch a strike, blue
someone called for the bloop double!
Nice going Posada after the ump did his best to help Durbin.
HIP HIP JORGE!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSsssssssssssss!! Thanks ump, for calling ball 4 a strike!!! LOL!!!
JORGE!!!
all you Posada haters should go to bed now, that was a great AB.
Jorge comes through, as all the doubters leave the blog now.
he proved somebody wrong
Yesssss
Now same thing applies-Cano owes us all and most importantly his teammates
Clutch. Very clutch.
Atta way Yanks!!!
C’mon Robbie – what have you learned????
should of been on first already but another run i’ll take that
this is the yankees offense – THE SLEEPING GIANT HAS AWOKEN!!!
I work for peanuts, but I don’t put Planters in the website name.
Cano needs his “doncha know” moment now.
Cano can you please get a hit here
Yeah Jorge!!! Atta boy!!! Can Robbie Cano join the party?!?
GET OFF JORGE!!!
Ok Robbie, there is nobody on base.
Pls summon the inner Papi in you.
sorry umpire.. u can’t stop us
Thankfully he got a hit and no one has to get any Idiotic-Er in here. LOL
especally cano up next
pitches in the other batters box are now strikes
must have been a recent rule change
There’s the 2 out hit I was looking for, doesn’t have to be a HR, just a hit.
Hip Hip Jorge! Just when I thought you couldn’t get in dumber Jorge you go and do something like this and COMPLETELY REDEEM yourself!
Let’s go Cano…earn some of your money here
Mcarver’s last comment WAS very anti-Yankee.
I’ll admit it.
Damon, speed demon
A-Rod gets drubbed by Durbin
whose drubbing begins!
Why do I have a feeling the stroke zone will not be so wide in the bottom of the inning?
Cano’s body language couldn’t be any worse. He looked like a kid heading to detention after that swing.
GET OFF JORGE!!!!
robbie is not even focused…so frustrating…come on get a hit please!!!! he doesnt have enough stuff to get you out!
Tony Womack (Cano) is a bum
The absolute weakest and softest .300 hitter I’ve ever seen in my life.
Get a grip, you don’t get retribution in the World Series by hitting someone, you do it by winning the Series. This isn’t a video game.
I appreciate all references to Dumb and Dumber.
CANO…you need to sit..
Man Robbie is scuffling.
I guess asking Cano to get a hit is too much to ask. Another brutal at bat with a fastball right down the middle.
Cano….yuck…
Matt–are you the same guy who put his phone on gameday in class? If so, what happened to your team spirit and your enthusiasm?
yikes cano…he is lost..
That was another bad at bat by Cano…
At least they got that run back…How about another 1-2-3 inning?
Cano is so pathetic. I think it’s time to bench him.
Cano is f??king retarded
Joba, please get two quick outs and then hit someone.
here comes joba!
Joba time!
I really hope Joba can get it done.
Rollins and Victorino can handle the fastball. I hope his slider and curve are working.
One thing about Cano….he blows a very nice bubble after he strikes out……..
Cano is an automatic out right now, and is having some brutal at bats… that last pitch was right down the middle.
Maybe Robbie will blast a solo shot or get a leadoff double or something in Game 4, right now it’s hard to imagine him doing anything w/ RISP
bat cano 7th tomorrow and swish 6th…
Cano looks like he loses his concentration easily.
He is too careless up there.
joba time!!!
Once Cano is not happy about that first strike call, he’s already out.
what a bum!!! Bench this f??ker
I tell ya, I like going to Joba right here but they should keep a very close eye on him. If he comes in throwing balls then jerk him out quick and go Robertson. We’ve seen over and over how quickly Joba can give up runs..
Joba for 2, then on to Mo…for the SAVE !
as much as cano cant hit right now..need his defense…cross our fingers pen holds this down
Cano is looking horrible, maybe he needs a day off like swish
“Mcarver’s last comment WAS very anti-Yankee.
I’ll admit it.”
what was it
even that jerk Biden is a Phillies fan… go Yankees
wow, Cano is stinky
Cano is as lost as can be. Either swinging early in the count at anything in sight or taking a fastball down the middle.
Sam,
What Werth is having is called a fluke. Alex is fulfilling his potential. Please don’t compare them again.
Let me get this straight – you want to sit the best fielding 2nd baseman we have. Defense wins Championships…
girardi, please bench CANO
i can’t watch him anymore
it’s an automatic out
Cano looks very off-balance…
but absolutely no way I take him out of the lineup.
no way!
Just throw strikes Joba – that’s all we ask.
Keep your focus, stay within yourself, keep it in the fairway.
All that stuff.
Just don’t help them out.
guys singing in the rain..lol
Clap to demand it
Posada’s Activity
Scares ‘em in Philly!
Cano is “sans” brain cells………
Joe Buck is ready to cry
I hope he doesn’t short out the mic.
Cano is having a tough night at the plate but saved game 6 of the ALCS with the play on Hunter in the 9th inning. Once again, all of you childish fans have as much knowledge of baseball as a rock.
Here comes Joba and his little league fastball
Cano is too worried about blowing his next bubble then baseball
They sure have the book on Cano. He swinging like he did the first part of 2008. He’s not lazy and has great talent. Sometimes he doesn’t use it.
jerry hairston for cano?
= wakeup call
joba needs to throw good strikes..
Bad AB
Joba makes me nervous…
Get a grip, you don’t get retribution in the World Series by hitting someone, you do it by winning the Series. This isn’t a video game.
But this is Philadelphia, they do it their way. They can have bragging rights on talk radio about taking care of Arod.
This is how atrocious this umpire’s strike zone is tonight:
When they showed the location of the pitch on Pitchtracker, it didn’t even show up on my TV screen.
djsunyc October 31st, 2009 at 11:52 pm
bat cano 7th tomorrow and swish 6th…
ABSOLUTELY!!! Great call, I’m sure Girardi will do this too, that’s definitely the right adjustment to make after tonight.
It’s Joba time.
you are smoking crack then eating it if you think cano should be benched.
werth is a clutch player for philly – don’t take anything away from him…the guy is good. we would kill for an OF like him – he’s their o’neill.
So I assume its safe to stick my head back in here?
I really wish Girardi would pitch Robertson here. He has pitched recently so he will be sharp. Joba hasn’t pitched at all recently and if he hangs his off speed pitches in this ballpark like he always does they are out of the park.
glad they didn’t listen to me.. Pettitte settled down well.
Cano needs to get his head in the game and stop blowing bubble gum.
“Get a grip, you don’t get retribution in the World Series by hitting someone, you do it by winning the Series.”
Screw that, let’s start cracking skulls!
Rob b. how big is your tv screen?
cano is in ever game no matter what.
we need his D and he will get a hit sooner or later.
time for pitching and defense to close this game out.
That reminds me-
Guess the Line Up tomorrow 3pm-4:30
Pins and needles time again with Joba and company in the mix.
They aint benching Cano, he’s far and away our best defensive 2b even if he’s not hitting, and with him he could start hitting anytime.

Welcome back
Hang on folks, this game is far from over!
Other than the Sandman, our bullpen is very hittable this series.
Let’s see if they too can step up.
Joba Time – just throw strikes big guy!
Angel–bad timing.
It seems like Cano just hates being in the batters box right now, and he’ll do whatever it takes to get out of there as soon as possible, LETS GO JOBA!
please throw strikes.
pretty please
Hopefully the bridge is sound. Let’s go Joba!
Come on JOba!!!! My bulldog that is named Joba really needs you to own up to your name!
and now Blue is aqueezing Joba ?….total BS !
I would definitely bring in Marte for Utley and Howard.
Everytime Cano blows a bubble it reminds me of Knoblauch in the ALCS against the Indians lol
I love Joba’s grit. To me he is a fearless, big-game pitcher.
If Joba gets Victorino I leave him in for Utley
Bryan,
Please keep politics off the board
Isnt it amazing that Marte has pitched way into the postseason by absolutely doing nothing this year? Its almost like letting Veras or Ramirez pitch…
Yall think he’ll go Hughes in the 8th. Joba is throwin pretty hard tongiht
LEAVE HIM IN
Hey DT, you should have taken one for the team tonight and summoned YPB Johnny Damon earlier. That would have made them scatter sooner.
Well done Jobber. Well done.
Jorge has a nice pedicure
great pitch! leave JOBA in please! No Marte! He is pitching fine,
I am shocked that Girardi isn’t overmanaging here.
So far so good!!! That was some weak contact by J Roll and Victorino…
100 pitches of fun… October 31st, 2009 at 11:57 pm
I would definitely bring in Marte for Utley and Howard.
_____________________________________________________
Agreed.
Joba getting the job done, though. Nice outing thus far.
Let Joba throw at Utley’s slicked back hair. Then bring in Marte.
Leave Joba in – he is throwing well
Joba to Mo.
Joba seems to have found some confidence in the past couple of days, he attacked both Rollins and Victorino.
let Joba pitch!
I like leaving Joba in here, he’s looking good, let him go the 8th if he can chase Chase…
I agree ,let him pitch
“Everytime Cano blows a bubble it reminds me of Knoblauch in the ALCS against the Indians lol”
Knoblauch had the Phil Coke point as well…
Valerie G. October 31st, 2009 at 11:55 pm
Rob b. how big is your tv screen?
————
I just realized that I didn’t type my post very well. I was referring to the strike two call on Posada.
I have a 32 inch screen. I know the edges of the feed are cut off, considering that a ball way outside doesn’t show up when they put the Pitchtracker up. That’s how I know that call was so atrocious. I can see pitches that are close, but off the plate to the 3rd base side. I can’t see the pitches on it that are way outside.
And since I couldn’t see strike two to Posada on it, there you go. Horrible call.
Nicely done Joba
That’s the Joba we all know and love.
GREAT JOBA!!!!
Good job Joba!
Milky is messing with the fans out there.
Good job Joba !
Way to go Joba!!!
Melky phakes ‘em out again.
Joba Chamberlain
Jack-o-lantern in pinstripes
Freaking out the Phils!
and Melky fakes out the fans again!!
Nice job JOBA!!!!!!
Melky with a fake-out again, he better be careful, those Phillies fans aren’t adverse to throwing stuff.
Chase Ugly, sit down sir!!!! Nice inning there…..
at ‘em ball!!! I’ll take it! BRAVO JOBA!!! Quick and easy through the top of the order, if we keep it up we might not have to see them again.
Melky cracks me up! The philly fans must be talking major trash for him to f with them like that1
you gotta give him the ball in the 8th too…great job !
Pitch Joba two?
Joba did his job! Leave him in for the 8th…then Marte to face Howard if anyone is on…
Ok GJ Joba…no way in hell does he pitch Howard & Ibanez.
ha i love melky double clutched and no-throwed the ball to the scum philly fans
That was awesome, Joba!
Melky has really turned in to a good CF. Great inning Jobber. I think you have to let him start the eighth. He’s throwing hard and throwing strikes..
Nice Job-a. I’d actually let him start the 8th until he sees trouble. He didn’t have to work hard at all.
WOW Joba got 3 outs.
You can’t bench Cano, but Girardi, or Long, should sit him down with some tapes and go over his swings with him, he is totally lost up there right now.
MLB had Joba at 95 to 96 on his fastball.
marte for howard then hughes for the next 2 guys after that before mo?
or do you stick with joba?
Great, clutch job by Joba. What was that, half a dozen pitches to get three outs?
Good job By Joba.. and Utley’s streak of getting on base in consecutive playoff games has come to an end unless he gets up in the 9th.
Nice Job Joba and if we get them in the 8th and 9th quietly thats the end of Utleys hitting streak in the post season
the Truth Squad
October 31st, 2009 at 11:42 pm
the Yankees will score more runs tonight and the young guys in the ‘pen will get retribution by shutting down the Phillies in the 7th and 8th.
You heard it here first.
————————————–
I’m batting 1000 so far, you can’t do better than that.
Once Joba got those guys out very easy you have to leave him in. He better leave him in for the 8th inning. No reason to take him out for nervous Hughes.
joba 4 the 8th.. why not?
Yes! Good job by Joba and Joe for leaving him in – best way to build his confidence back up. you will need him again this series.
Mix and match in the 8th, then Mo in the 9th
“Hey DT, you should have taken one for the team tonight and summoned YPB Johnny Damon earlier. That would have made them scatter sooner.”
lol.. there was nothing stopping those trolls,Angel – except bath, pj’s and bedtime plus a few Yankee runs..
Glad Joe didn’t make the same mistake and take Joba out with 2 quick outs.
“Melky phakes ‘em out again.”
———–
I’m sure the same fans that are yelling obscenities at Melky are raising their hands up to try and catch the ball when he fake throws it
Marte for Howard?
Roberston/Hughes for Werth?
OK, time to add some more and save Mo for tomorrow. 2-3 more runs now!!!!
Great job by Joba…Really glad Girardi let him pitch to Utley….
great inning by joba..needed that..but 2 more innings to go..be great if we get more runs and could save mo
Rob b–Ah, got it. I was just thinking, if you have one of those tiny tv screens that makes it impossible to see anything at all, the strike zone might not be the problem. lol
with 2 quick outs do you let Joba bat? I think I would.
Joba was good…but I’d bet Girardi brings in Marte to face Howard
U-t-l-e-y you aint got no alibi…
You aint got no hits tonite…
You’re Utley…Yeah, you’re utley!!!

Glad Joe didn’t make the same mistake and take Joba out with 2 quick outs.
———-
I know it was Robertson. But you know what I mean.
Gotta get some more runs. It would be nice to give Rivera an extra day off.
Joba the bulldog is proud…or just passed out next to me, with his tongue out…
Welcome back to November baseball
Who else wants Joe to stay with Joba for the 8th?
leave joba in .. he’s got it tonight
I think you go batter to batter with Joba.
Leave Joba in to start the 8th…….NO MAS O Marte please
Nice Jobber.
Few more runs would be good
do not overmanage
it was good to see joe not overmanage there. I was looking for it but those were 2 easy outs and we’re up by 3.. there’s no need for that.
Marte for Howard, cause the pitcher’s spot is up 3rd. That’s why Joba stayed out there.
It’s November.
Joba starts the 8th and pitches to Werth. If both guys get on then you go to Marte.
I would leave Joba in to start the 8th because hopefully he can get Howard out and then I want his stuff for Werth. Hughes right now with his straight fastball is not a good matchup against Werth.
Utley hits lefties for both average and slugging better than righties. Marte might come in against Howard next inning, but Ibanez also a better hitter against lefties, so pick your poison.
I say give Joba a second inning!
Good morning, Erica.
lets get some more runs..
if no one gets on let Joba bat
I think you gotta leave Joba in for Howard, the worst he can do is hit a solo shot and if he gets him then he’d definitely be a good match for Werth, I’d only bring in Robertson/Marte if Joba starts to struggle…oh crap, the pitcher’s spot is up, nevermind…
have to give joe g. some credit tonight. good moves to play swish and to leave joba.
who pitches the 8th?
Joba won’t pitch the 8th. Pitcher is due to bat 3rd. He’s not going to bat.
November baseball.
To me it seems Joba is spitting bullets when he first comes in but then he has time to calm down while the Yanks hit. Plus going 1 IP tonight saves him for tomorrow as well.
matsui getting ready to pinch hit for joba…
Sar515-
That was hysterical…like i shot milk out of my nose hysterical!
Melky could really screw with philly fans by hitting a hr.
Swish I know you hit a homerun but swinging 2-0? Come on..
Joba’s spot to hit is 3rd this inning. I let him hit if nobody is on but if they have a chance to get more runs then you have to send Matsui up there.
Joe from Long Island

Good morning, Erica.
*****
Hehehe
I’d make a cup of coffee but its about 1,000 degrees in my apartment
melky should bunt here…catch them off guard…
jeter = mr november, and therefore will hit a hr next at bat
Happy, Novemeber, everybody! Can you believe we’re 2 months away for 2010…only 2 years until the end of the world
Joe G. doing no wrong!
I don’t know who put the choke chain on Captain Hook but I’m loving it. I was sure he’d pull Joba for Marte.
Now we put the Sonny Corleone to Myers.
“Joba was good…but I’d bet Girardi brings in Marte to face Howard”
And it’d be the right decision, b/c you do not want Philly getting a long look at your BP w/ a 3 run lead and 4 or 5 more games to play. Victorino scorched that ball, Melky made a big play on it, your sniffing the finish line tonight, put the experience guy vs the big bats.
this is why the NL is terrible
I hope Melky doesn’t get on base then Girardi’s mind will be thinking about pinch hitting for Joba.
No!!!!!
another bad strike call
1 more inning and then we can hand this off to Mo.
I think Joba will be taken out on a high note.
They’ll go lefty Marte for Howard and then Hughes.
Not that I agree – but I think Girardi wants to get everyone on track. (looking ahead as well as this game)
Here comes Phillip Hughes.
Now November and Yanks in WS…Jeter due for a HR
I don’t want the Jobber anywhere near Howard when he gets up.
Bring in Marte.
I dont like to overmanage either, but in a late inning situation, I’m playing matchups with Howard and Werth.
The strike in the other batters box is really getting old.
They are goin to go to Hughes, Matsui is going to hit. I’m a little scared I hate to say. But if Hughes pitches well and they can get both him and Joba back on track then that would be a huge plus
Wow, looks like Joe is actually just gonna stick to the original pecking order…if that’s the case he should really throw Marte first for Howard and then go to Hughes.
Erica,
Put the AC on
I agree with DT
Marte then Hughes
Anyone else noticed how fox stopped showing the strike zone against the yankees..?? what a bunch of homers.
really mccarver? brett meyers bowled a 298 two springs ago? thanks.
forget about tomorrow.
win today.
Okay, here’s a question that’s prolly moot now. Do the Yanks but Matsui in LF at all this series in Philly? How are the knees?
Awful swing melky
Joba bats Girardi!!
Wow! 298?!?!
Yusssssee pls be fixed.
I think i pitch Marte against Howard then bring in Hughes.
terrible move just terrible
I am happy the Yanks have scored 7 runs but my God does this team swing at some awful pitches
Why is Melky swinging at that garbage ?
Joba back on the beam now its time for P.H. to get back up there. This is a god move by Joe G. and if it works spells doom for the Phills in this Series
marte will go at howard + ibanez…then hughes or possibly mo for werth if it’s 2 outs.
WHOA.. what the hell was Melky swinging at there?
Kevin Long needs to sit Cano and Melky down for a chat..
Ball
I don’t like this at all – Joba looked solid and threw very few pitches (not even sure it was ten). Why pull him with a 3 run lead and no one on?
d-rob for the 8th phil is too unreliable this is not spring training clueless joe !

Erica,
Put the AC on
*****
Considered. I have a fan going. I am just going to keep sitting here wilting. It makes it feel more like summer
This move makes no sense. After seeing how easy Joba got them out leave him out there. Hughes against Werth is a terrible match up.
Will be Hughes
Welcome back, Godzilla!
wow brett myers bowling record has been brought to our attention, so therefore he is awesome…
MATSUI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Matsui is a legend
MATSUI!!!!!!!!
Yyyyyyyeaaaaah SUI!!!!
MATSUI!
GODZILLA!!!!
Batsui!!!!
A thrilla by Godzilla!!!
GODZILLA
Hughes warming up? Hmmm.
Joba threw 9 pitches. And looked good doing it.
Oh well.
Lets go Hughes!
Batsui!
Hideki!!!! That’s why you gotta pinch hit there! Big hit!!!!
Now it’s a great idea
Matsui!!
Girardi is better than me… I lose
Haha, Girardi keeps pushin those correct buttons
NICE!!!!!!!!!!
Yes ! Matsui !
HIDEKI!!!!
GI Joe makes the right move again.
yes!!!!!!!!!!!! PH HR!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
MATSUI!!!!!!GREAT MANAGING JOE! HAHAH
GIRARDI=FRIGGIN GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
terrible move huh?? a THRILLA FROM GODZILLA
Pinch hitting worked!!! Yay Matsui!!
Lets get this game in before the rain comes!
And now Godzilla can pitch the 8th too.
Win-win!
Never mind what I just said.
Guess pulling Joba was a good move. Joe pushing the right buttons so far.
GODZILLA!!!!
HOW DO WE NOT SIGN HIM NEXT YEAR?!?!?!
Matsssuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!
NO RAIN … NO RAIN …. NO RAIN!!!!!!
godzillaa
melky needs to start swingin at strikes….awsome matsui goes yard
Joe Girardi is pushing all the right buttons….
Matsui-san! Godzilla fabulous pinch hit!
so much for the strategy of the LoHud blog. Pinch hitting for Joba was the right thing and Matsui comes through. Girardi can go batter by batter in the 8th if he wants now.
Godzilla!
“GIRARDI=FRIGGIN GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
LOL
Ok I will take that back. lol Please tell me that this ballpark isn’t a joke..
you think joe buck could pretend to be objective.
now he’s hoping for rain.
YESSSSSSSSS
Their bullpen is a real liability
Minutes after Midnight, 11/1/01 – Jeter hits an opposite field home run.
Minutes after Midnight, 11/1/09 – Matsui hits an opposite field home run.
FOUR RUNS guys….we are good !
Philles bullpen looks great!
Mental note-
Tonight we like Girardi’s managing
Matsui will be the one to stay next year, dude can still hit.
wow i was just about to question girardi for putting in matsui, meaning we have to see a shaky hughes in the 8th..but that HR shut me right up.
4 runs, 6 outs.. i think if anybody gets on we see mo for 3+ outs again.
Meyer’s pitch was right down the alley!! LOL
Wow Giradi continues to press all the right buttons. I was all for leaving Joba in. Now Marte and Hughes.
Mitch Williams predicted an 8-6 Phillies win… well, at least one team is scoring 8 runs…
Matsui!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Erica,
I slept with the AC on last night for the first time since the summer. My apartment gets super hot as well
GODZILLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
what is with the stadium announcements in the middle of at-bats?
never enuf runs!! cmon jete!
Hughes needs to be himself again.
So does that make Matsui the current Mr. November??
Yeah, it’s nice to have Joba pitch the eighth, but you really don’t want to let him hit late in the game.
Nice bat off the bench, that Hideki Matsui, huh?
how many of you know that a World Series game doesn’t get called by rain but always gets played to completion the next day?
Is Marte even up in the bullpen?
smart to put hughes in…a little less pressure and could be confidence builder for the rest of the WS
It’s a monster mash!!!!!
The bogeyman loses power
once Halloween ends!
Funny how we hear no mention of the bandbox
Matsui gets one at bat a night the next three nights, glad he made the most of it.
I may be getting senile but I don’t remember Matsui ever hitting a homer to LF.
Who pitches the 8th? I would bring Marte out for the lefties and then go to Hughes. Or maybe Hughes can pitch the 9th inning and possible give Mo the night off.
What was that earlier talk about how loud the Phillies’ stadium was and that this was how a World Series was supposed to sound?
Curious.
X fingers
Instant gratification from Matsui!
How big would it be if Mo got the night off? Rain Rain go away. Bother me at 3am.
seriously, if we played in this park all year, we hit over 350 homers…
Hey, when are the announcers going to tell us what a bandbox this place is?????????????
Matsui is Mr Clutch
Matsui has to stay in 2010
I hope it starts storming so all the Philly fans can go home soaking wet losers.
Man if the Yankees can stay in this Phillies bullpen then #27 will be coming back to NY. They don’t have anybody out there that scares me much
Hughes better pitch Werth away or if you are going inside make sure you get the pitch there. No more batting practice fastballs right down the middle to him.
I say give Joba a second inning!
———————-
Unless Matsui pinch hits for him and hits a homer!!! LOL
Joe Buck just wishes Werth hit a 2 run HR.

Erica,
I slept with the AC on last night for the first time since the summer. My apartment gets super hot as well
******
The problem is there is heat coming in even though there shouldn’t be. I can’t control the heat. But the super allows the heat to go on when he shouldn’t because my building is full of old ladies who call him all night complaining they are cold.
I think Joe Girardi is the AL Manager of the Year.
I have such amazing respect for the way he has managed and handled this team.
He sure is looking like Midas tonight!
2 more innings …lets go yanks..
Alright, folks. I’m logging off now…watching the game computer/lohud-less. Go NYY and don’t be too mean to each other while I’m gone
.
Truth Squad,
We all know that World Series games dont get called.
The Yankees have a lead.
Just get the ball to Mo. End the game. Before the rain comes. I dont feel like waiting around all night.
Jeez.
Matsui will be playing the part of the 1954 NY Giants Dusty Rhodes with his late inning pinch hit homers, this year. That was a sweet swing.
Marte will likely come in and face Howard and then Hughes to Werth.
Who pitches the 8th? I would bring Marte out for the lefties and then go to Hughes. Or maybe Hughes can pitch the 9th inning and possible give Mo the night off.
Since Girardi is pushing the right buttons so far, I’ll go with the hot hand
What’s the weather forecast for game four?
Should have been:
*****
It’s a monster mash!
Bogeymen lose their powers
once Halloween ends!
That place is such a bandbox…but the media only talks about right field at NYS
Mitch Williams has been alright so far this postseason. he’s a little wittier than I expected, and has given the Yanks plenty of props when warranted.
If nothing else, he’s infinitely more tolerable than John Kruk, the lumpy mass of worthlessness that he is.

I thought Selig said he would never allow that again since all of the crap he got for it the last time
Shankapotomas. I love that.
Marte for Howard?
Hughes for Werth and Ibanez?
Come on Marte!!
McCarver’s homerism doesn’t bother me (I like it better when the national guys are against us) and his analysis is decent so I can take the arrogance. But when he starts yucking it up with the equally unfunny Joe Buck, I have to restrain myself from putting a foot through the flat screen.
the Phillies are in real trouble in the series if they lose tonight-CC vs. Blanton is a huge advantage for the Yankees, particularly when it looks like they are showing signs of waking up at the plate.
I think Howard is about 0-12 against Marte, that’s why he’s in the game.
marte looking filthy so far…
I hope they don’t have to use Mariano at all tonight.
Kruk is awful isn’t he.
Throw that breaking ball again…
Buck is saying Damaso wrong
marte over hughes? i guess it makes sense for howard..that second curveball on the inside corner made my heart jump though.

Mr. Smartay Marte, coming out and pounding the strike zone, kudos to this dude for really stepping up!
“HOW DO WE NOT SIGN HIM NEXT YEAR?!?!?!”
b/c he’s not mobile, but he hits them a long way. There may be a kid name Miranda who could have a say in this.
P.S. how good has Damaso been.
I love the way they have gone after Howard.
Werth…not so much!
Bringing in Marte is a good move… I like the way Girardi is managing the game tonight.
MARTE!!!
he’s been GREAT for us…always liked him…
Howard is bum
Wow, Ryan Howard is having a tough time in this Series
goog, K!!!
Leave Marte in
Howard looking worse than Cano!!!
Marte has great stuff when he hits his spots.
I think the Yankees may be Ryan Howard’s daddy too.
Wow no Hughes?
Howard has 3 K’s, why aren’t we hearing about him choking?
9k’s for Howard…OUCH!
Is this a good idea?
Who has the advantage in the rain, hitter or pitcher? (Fielding is tougher, yes?)
Thank goodness we have awesome Marte signed for two more years!
I like this, keep in Marte so he can face Ibanez too, good stuff from Joe Joe…
Brandon AWESOME! (BECAUSE In New York! This song isn’t what dreams are made of!) November 1st, 2009 at 12:14 am

i understand that but he provides arod with so much protection…
We shouldn’t complain about Cano, Howard is at least evening that out. I don’t know about leavin Marte in for Shaggy.
This is a weird matchup. But Ibanex is on deck. Hopefully he can get Werth out.
When did Damaso Marte remember how to pitch?
By the way, if you are holding your breath for the MSM to write an article (like the ones about A-Rod after Game 2) about Howard and his 9 K’s in the series, don’t – you’re likely to pass out.
Okay…So Girardi is not playing it exactly by the book.
Girardi is a work in progress.
I like this.
Marte has channelled Graeme Lloyd with the way he’s pitched in the post-season.
Erica,
Don’t you have a knob under the radiator that you can shut the heat off?
Hughes is getting a chance at 3 or 4 outs.
Marte looking like the guy we traded for.
This is good leaving him in there, maybe let Hughes go 3 outs + whatever Marte can’t get and let Mo have the night off!! That would be incredible!!
marte looks very good tonight too
I don’t get this. Should be Hughes to Werth and Ibanez(who hits lefties well)
Question if it’s a 4 R lead do they dare have Yusssssee close tonight?
Joe is looking for Hughes to pitcu the 9th, thus saving Mo.
Kruk is fat with a mullet

Its been a few weeks since there was any real hating on Marte. Possibly his longest hateless stretch as a Yankee
Marte was really good with the Pirates and when he first got to NY before he got hurt. I think people forgot that.
He likes the chicas and the cha cha.
Hughes should be no where near this game
Joe Buck sure has a big red nose.
This is smart, Marte is dealing, Joe is not over-managing. I think Joe is getting better at this. Good for him, good for us.
The Phillie Phanatics still chanting “yankees suck” even though they are losing.
Maybe Hughes pitches the 9th. Thus far it’s not a save situation.
Marte did pitch very well in the National league before he came on board with NY
that was almost a strike……..according to this umpire tonight….
Werth is peeking back for location.
Brandon AWESOME! (BECAUSE In New York! This song isn’t what dreams are made of!)

I would give him a shot and bring Mo in if necessary
Girardi’s pulling all of the right strings so far, and some are still complaining. Marte really made Howard look bad. Now, just get the next two outs.
Apparently… the Yankees Suck
According to Phillies fans hahahaha
marte is BEASTING right now…
Ibanez is on deck so if he can get through Werth then Marte matches up good with him.
Nice call ump
Philly fan is the worst in America and turn on their own in a New York minute-Howard is probably being blasted already there.
Beautiful K.
I don’t want to see Werth get anything else tonight. Other than maybe his silly looking soul patch getting tangled in his bat.

Good to see Marte is getting some love now… he’s had some struggles as a Yankee but I think he is a solid lefty specialist… let’s not forget he won the WS with the White Sox…
slam the bat now werth!
MARTE!!!! sat down the greatest athlete of all time!
Marte is dealing
i apologize for ever doubting you damaso
Cy Marte?
“Hughes should be no where near this game”
Wrong. This is the perfect situation to use Hughes. They have a 4 run cushion and they need to rebuild his confidence.
Any trouble, they still have Rivera.
werth said a bad word.
according to citizens bank park, the yankees suck.
His breaking stuff is excellent tonight.
Marte has been great this whole postseason…
Nice pitch. Come on Marte 1 more out!!
It’s still Saturday Buckaroony!
damaso…..great location! i’d like to see pitch trax
Martw came to play in the World Series.
I love the half-hearted “Yankees suck!” chants
Better check those towels for stains (of the brown variety)
LOL Clearly there’s a great group of Yank fans who are really pissing off that Philly crowd! Great job Marte!!! Lets not forget that when we got this guy he was closing for the Pirates, he can get the job done if he’s on, and he looks pretty darn narsty right now!
Looks like it’s raining pretty hard now. I wonder how long they let it go?
Wow, Marte through the 8th then tack on with 2,3,4 hitters and Hughes closes. If we get more runs maybe even Aceves or Robertson.
If he gets this next out he’s earned his cha cha w/ the chicas this week.
MARTE!!!! sat down the greatest athlete of all time!!
that’s good Marte is on a roll. leave him in.
Its a Marte partay!
Werth is easy to lip reap. (He said a bad word after he struck out.)
Marte is looking good!
Werth trying to channel his inner Reggie Jackson.
Lefty Cha-Cha had other ideas.
Magical Marte
turned Houdini on Howard,
Poof! Werth is a wisp!
Mo in for 9?
Matsui coming off the bench with a homer.
Buck=mindless drivel!!
4 more outs til we have CC on the hill going for the 3-1 lead…..
Marte was smartly rested most of the year, just so he’s be ready for the playoffs. Cashman is a genius!
Marte is channelling his inner 2005 self. He had Werth totally locked up on that last pitch. Get Ibanez and call it a great night.
Patrick November 1st, 2009 at 12:17 am

“Wrong. This is the perfect situation to use Hughes. They have a 4 run cushion and they need to rebuild his confidence.”
i agree with both of you.
Great costume by Marte…
Graeme Lloyd!
this is the biggest performance in marte’s career…and he brought it – cashman FTW!!!
It’s easy as 1-2-3!
Great inning Marte
I won’t say how awesome Marte has looked this postseason.
Why screw it up?
AROD caught one !
AWESOME BULLPEN BABY!!!
Good job Marte !
Great job by Marte!
Cha Cha DAMASO, Cha Cha!
Lol, I can hear “Let’s go Yankees” chants.
great work fellas!
Marte!!!! Great stuff baby!!! How bout this pen all of a sudden? Two perfect innings!!!
3 more runs Yankees. We need another Alex HR.
damaso impressed me greatly…
I take back every bad thing I ever said about Marte! (And about Ca$hman for siging him.)
Marte is sick!
great job marte
i’m just so happy for him
Not a surprise Matsui always kills the NL can he play 2nd?
Did anyone hear the lets go yankees chant before the last out?
All right, now, who here predicted Joba and Marte would pitch the 7-8th innings and get 6 straight outs?
Sterling is right – you can’t predict baseball.
Nice job by Marte…I am assuming Mo pitches the 9th? If Hughes was pitching well I would let him start the inning but I don’t know if you can trust him right now.
What an incredible job by Marte tonight.
You have to save Mo if you can, go to Hughes with the bigger lead. Every extra day off you can give Mo after he threw 40 pitches could be huge in terms of allowing him to bounce back and go deeper in his next outings.
marte looked very strong there.
Hughes for the ninth, then let’s call it a night!
Hey, I made a rhyme.
Philly fans are stupid. More so then Sox fans.
At-least Red Sox fans know when to chant ‘Yankees suck’. They pick their spots well.
Does he bring in Mo to start the 9th or go batter to batter?

How come when I say the exact same thing (like at 12:17) everyone ignores it???
But then people crab at me that I don’t talk about baseball
Mystique and Aura is back baby
Our fans have taken over their stadium as well
Howard is gonna need a lot more than one sandwich to sooth him over the long winter!
Hughes will pitch the 9th inning.
Yea you go with Phil here with a 4 run lead and have Mo ready,
Getting Phil back on track could pay huge dividends later in the series
gotta give marte alot of credit…those were really good hitters..and got them all out..hope he keeps pitchin well
That shot of the depressed Phillies fan with the Phillies Phanatic hat on was kind of hilarious.
Charlie Manuel in his presser after the game:
“Well, I reckon we done scored less runs than they did tonight, mmm-hmm.”
Werth looked like he was sneaking peeks at location.
And now we’ve got Hughesy for the 9th with at least a four run cushion, he’s got a chance to get his confidence back and worst comes to worst we’ve got Mo Money to save him. This game’s taken a great turn here at the end and we’ve got all the momentum now, especially with CC going up against Joe Blanton tomorrow!
Marte is healthy and ready to go. He wasn’t used that much at all in the regular season, so he has some gas left in the tank now
“werth said a bad word.”
Did it have a K in it?
I’d bring in Hughes for the ninth. It is a four run, at least lead, and the team will need Hughes to regain his confidence. Plus, it’s the bottom of the order for the Phillies.
Marte is a stealth Cashman operative. He went into deep cover as a huge flop to prepare for this posteason.
Nice job by Marte.
Maybe they give the next inning to Hughes with Mo getting a night off after that two inning close it would be a good thing. Of course with the short leash and Mo to back up.
It would be nice to see Hughes get his act together again, then the pen would be in good shape.
Damaso the man??!!! wow what a turnaround for him!!

the Yankees will score more runs tonight and the young guys in the ‘pen will get retribution by shutting down the Phillies in the 7th and 8th.
You heard it here first.
————————————-
I end the night with a perfect record for predictions but here’s one more-Hughes will probably start the 9th, if either the first batter gets on or two get on before there are two out it will be Mo to finish, otherwise Hughes will.
12 strikes 2 balls, where has he been?
Who’s going to hit Alex this inning for the Phils?
Glee is so a must watch.
Game 3.
Bats and bullpen bridge arrive!
Wow, I heart Glee
Phil has to try to close it out,to get his confidence back.

LOL!
No, you can’t go to Mo tonight. If Girardi goes to Mo with a 4 run lead or more, he is incredibly dumb.
Mo just threw 39 pitches with a single day off. If you use him today, he is still going to be fatigued and now he might be needed again tomorrow. If you don’t have to use him, why in god’s name would you waste him?
Whether Hughes is on fire or not, the 9th has to be his inning. A 4 run lead against 7-8-9, it’s a NO BRAINER. Even if he gives up a baserunner or two the tying run still isn’t at the plate, and you need to rebuild Hughes’ confidence so you can go to him in crucial spots, and what better time to use him?
This isn’t a clinching game. Every move you make now has repercussions down the line in this series. Going to Mo tonight is the classic case of winning the battle but not thinking about winning the war.
Can’t say enough no matter what happens in this game what grit Andy showed after that bad inning. Made just one more mistake to Wurth but all in all a good performance from him, coupled with our bats waking up it’s been a good game from us. Let’s close it out in the 9th without having to use MO and we’re set up with another 2 inning save if CC has the lead and can go that far.
“At-least Red Sox fans know when to chant ‘Yankees suck’. They pick their spots well.”
Like during a Patriots championship parade. In February. Two months before baseball season.
Boston fans are just as idiotic.
I’m hoping we can give Mo the night off…
A few runs for Hughes would be nice here.
Wow I didn’t agree with it but that was sweet! Nice job Damo! Now with at least a 4 run lead you could let Hughes start the 9 th with a real short leash in an attempt to boost his confidence. But you can’t mess around too much, save situation or not, this game must be closed out.
4 run lead? Nope, we’re scoring more here to make it an easy 9th for Phil.
manuel running through his BP tonight. with blanton tomorrow, this could come back and bite him in the tuckus tomorrow…
Go figure. The Marte who used to send waves of collective panic through the blog whenever he was sighted warming up in the bullpen has been terrific, so far.
Just goes to show, you can’t always predict baseball.

I don’t think ol’ Cholly has a lot of faith in his pen.
Hughes has to come out for the ninth
i don’t like bringing in Mo with runners on though but if you have to you have to
3 outs till Jimmy “5 games” Rollins eats crow.
Rest mo! Put in Phil. If he gets into any kind of trouble enter sandman
They seem to be positioning for Damon perfectly. That’s the second one that looked like it might sneak up the middle
Send Hughes for the ninth.
How tall is Rollins? 5′ 6″?

Yes Juan Miranda, waaaaaaay younger than Matsui-san and has been improving each yr.
Are you guys serious?
Hughes has had like 2 bad games this postseason. He had 50 something lights out games in the regular season. You need this guy to be going well, so why not show some faith in him and let him get himself back on track?
Going to Mo is ridiculous, and it could cost you unnecessarily down the line. If you can’t trust Hughes with a 4 run lead, when can you trust him? This guy is your set up man, and he has overpowering stuff. You can’t just let him rot out there because of 1 bad game.
Let’s hope A-Rod make some noise
Hughes has to start the 9th inning. Why waste Rivera when it’s not a save situation? Maybe you’ll need him for 4 outs tomorrow.
Hughes goes out right now. Or else. Show some faith in the kid!

I posted the same as everyone else about Hughes. But, Erica if it makes you feel better I just copied your idea.

A little. Thank you
Just frustrates me. If I say something baseball related, I am invisible. If I say Big Bird, I get like 15 responses
Go with Hughes – have Mariano ready in case something goes sour.
I’d love for Alex to get another jack.
Bring on Hughes. Save Mo so he can get 4 or 5 outs tomo.
Mo can really use the night off. I just hope that Hughes can keep it together. The bottom of the order is up.
Absolutely I let Hughes start the 9th. Give him a chance to work through whatever “yips” he might be having. Possibly giving Mo a 2nd day off after 39 pitches – more than he’s thrown all year. If Hughes allows a runner – you bring in Mo.
I’d go to Hughes.
It’s 7-8-9
Perfect time to get him right.
Pat M-
Is that you???? Did you LOVE the concert as much as me??
Bottom of the order, I would go with Hughes with Mo in reserve.
It looks like Hughes is warming up right now.
It would be nice if Alex could drill one here and make it a 5 run lead, though.
there was a shot of Charlie Manuel with a giddy little laugh/cackle during Game 1.
I’ve never wanted the Yanks to win a series more from that point on in my life.
Sure, he seems like the nice country bumpkin, but that was such a smug cackle that karma has to see fit for the Phillies to go down in flames.
Throw in Hughes and keep Mo fresh for tomorrow. If Hughes has trouble with the bottom of the order send him to Tampa for the rest of the series.
It’s Yuuusssssseee time.
Matt, you’re high on crack-flavored dope.
It’s Halloween, Bruney is the obvious call.
I was always a “Joba the starter guy” but I have changed my mind after watching him this year and this postseason. I’m not sure he’s ever anything more than a middle of the rotation starter but I think he could be one of the better relievers in baseball…so I think you go with which role he has the higher ceiling in
This is no time for “confidence building.” Hughes could let this one get away real quick.
Let Mo finish. He’ll get his rest next week.
Rest Mariano, please! Alex, jack one.
Maybe Mo should have one of those talks with Hughes now lol
Alex’s obp is going up.
Erica, I just saw your Big Bird comment, funny stuff!!
No need to waste Rivera in a non-save/non-series clinching situation. He’s thrown a lot of pitches in his last two outings and although he should be able to pitch an inning, ideally we’ll get him back to 100% for tomorrow and Monday.
Jorge! Here we go.
A-Rod getting plenty o’ quality ABs.
hughes for the 9th & joe buck & mccarver are horrid
i love putting hughes in here
Hughes talked about getting nervous about the Phillies batters, so he got away from his usual way of doing things. Knowing it is half the battle for him. I think he will do OK.
listen to the hush tones of Buck and McCarver, you’d think they’re covering a golf tournament.
Phil Hughes needs to throw strikes. It’s the bottom of the order so he should not have any trouble.
Runs!! lets save Mo for tomorrow and Monday
So much for the demise of Arod Collin Cowherd. Once again is was Arod that swung the momentum of the game…
For all the talk made of Yankee fans leaving early and not being as loud as they should I’m seeing very similar occurrences in Philly…

I hate Collin CowTurd
Also if Hughes gets into trouble the top of the order will be coming up. Hopefully he can get the job done.
“Let Mo finish. He’ll get his rest next week.”
Yussse has done it all season, you need to show confidence in him or else putting him on the active makes no sense. Your on the road it’s a 4 run game, you pray he finds himself, if he doesn’t you go straight to Mo, Mo threw 39 pitches on Thrs. he’s 39 not 29.

How many walks would Posada have tonight if the umpire would call the same zone on Phillies pitchers that he called on Pettitte?
We’ve made a bunch of their arms work tonight, hopefully they’ll feel that for tomorrow night when they’ve gotta go right back to the pen cus we’ve knocked out Blanton after 3 or 4 innings…

Okay. Thanks anyway!
So you people would rather Mo come in, maybe throw 15-20 pitches with 1 day off after having thrown an insane 39 pitches, and then be used perhaps for another 20 pitches tomorrow?
There’s a difference between doing what it takes to win, and being flat out stupid and desperate. If you don’t need to go to the guy in a spot where he could really use a day off, you don’t tempt fate.
Remember how in 2004 Torre went to Quantrill, Gordon, etc with a 10 run lead to make it 3-0? Well guess what, those moves affect those guys down the line, and when they had to go 2 or 3 days in a row they were fatigued and they weren’t as sharp.
You just don’t make knee jerk, desperation moves in this spot. I know you all think Mo is invincible, but his stuff is diminished a bit- he is human. Wasting him here just increases the chance that one of his cutters is a little less sharp and they find a way to break through off of him rather than just missing.
Philly fan is once again proving what front running wimps they are.
With some room for error and the bottom of the Phillies lineup due up, you try getting Rivera rest whenever you can.
Go get’em kid.
Please get 3 easy outs Hughes…..
Madsen at 22 pitches
he can certainly be used tomorrow, but if so, he’d prob be at least a little tired… and tough to use in Game 5
Hughes has a very short leash I would imagine.
Could tonight be…ahem…Philthy in Philadelphia?
Alright Hughes, let’s close this one out!
Phil needs to relax, relate and release.
A sigh of relief from Cano
Phil needs to relax, relate and release.
You wait, Monday Cowherd will be talking abou how great the Yankees are and how talented Arod is after saying yesterday that he was done for he series. He changes his opinion based on whats already happened.

OK, can Hughsie get his mojo back?

Anyone hear buck the shmu…k say that arod’s dinger was a “judgement call.” What a bozo.
Next year, Joba should be closer in waiting and Phil Hughes should be starting
Hughes needs to step up. Joba did and Marte has come through this entire series so far.
Colin Cowturd is a bit off mentally. The other day he was talking about how unhealthy milk was. He said you don’t “eat” anything you can’t see through. Huh?

This is one of the things I REALLY admire about Girardi. He gets his guys back out there and shows that he has faith in them. With an 8-4 lead he’s giving Hughes the start. Even though Joba has had his troubles, he had the 7th.
I can’t say enough for Girardi. I like the way he deals with his guys. Torre had favorites and everyone else got ignored. Girardi, to me, is the opposite.
I liked the choice from Day One. I wasn’t a fan of hiring Donny Baseball, only because to me he was too much like Torre in his personality. I really felt the Yanks needed someone more fiery.

2 more outs!
OK Phil… 2 more!

tough call but u gotta try to get hughes confidence back and if u ca stay away mo thats a good thing with another 2 straight days…2 outs away

you really can’t throw a belt high fastball in this stadium – it will go out…
one more runner on and you have to go to mo.
bummer.
but I’d rather see Hughes challenge hitters than walking hitters.
Hughes still looks weak.
Joe should not trust him at all.
Poor Hughes
Oh no…..
here comes Mo…
how do you like the move by girardi now?
…..or you do it now.
I believe Donnie Baseball would be a great manager — that he would show confidence in the guys without being hogtied to a stupid stat book.
Darn, Hughes. Wanted him to do well.
UGH, what is it with light hitting catchers this year.

Can’t boost Hughes’ confidence like that.
Unfortunately, I think that probably ends Hughes’ run as Rivera’s setup man.
CRAP… I woulda went one more batter… Stairs cant hit curves
Man, Hughes just can’t do anything right. He is shellshocked.
Like I said Hughes should be no where near this game.
Amazing. Guy is given a 4 run lead and he can’t even make it through the innning and now we have to use Mo
Poor Mo. Guy can’t get a night off.
hopefully mo wont have to throw alot of pitches..
That bwas bad by Hughes. You can’t pitch Ruiz up and in.
Well that was a VERY quick hook. I would of gave him 1 more batter but we know Girardi panics.
Good move, you don’t mess around here. This game is too important. Give Phil a chance but stop it now before he walks the next guy
Hughes
things are just not going well, he cant locate anything
this is no time for messing around, Mo was always coming in as soon as it became a save situation.
Bruney gets a bigger chance than that.
Damn Mo is going to wear down at this pace.
Great. Thought I’d be in bed in 5 minutes.
Great. He could only get us one out. Way to step up Phil!!
Did I mention the Jorge Posada lookalike I saw in Anaheim?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/9.....062477441/
Joe’s not fooling…
Go get ‘em MO!!!!!!
i would have given hughes another hitter .
3 runs against Mo is a hard proposition.
I don’t like this move by Joe, it makes the score 8-5, not 8-7, let the kid finish the inning. You’re going to need a fresh Mo later on.
Still waiting for the announcers to say that this park is a bandbox…
Well, he was trying to attack and throw strikes. I still wouldn’t give up on Phil. But I would bring in Mo to seal it.
“Well, no one’s perfect, Hughes.”
———
his fastball location has been off all postseason
his arm may be a bit tired?
1 more batter for hughes?
Can’t believe he’s putting Mo in here. Could come back to bite us tomorrow.
Girardi is abusing Mo.
Yankees need a new scouting report on Ruiz. All he hits is those belt high FBs. Every highlight against the Yankees he hits the same pitch.
Has girardi learned his lesson yet with Hughes ?…Either Mo or Robertson starts the 9th…Our MGR still has his head up his @$$.
Well that pretty much assures we wont be seeing phil for the rest of this series, unless we are down by 10 or up by 10.
should have given him another batter…stairs is weak and just faced rivera last game
What is Girardi doing? Hughes can’t get 2 more outs? Really?
Let him finish the game and end on a positive note, something he hasn’t done in a long time. Rivera doesn’t need to pitch every single day.
Where is the guy that was hitting the corners, dropping hooks and blowing fastballs past guys? I miss that Phil Hughes.
This was not unlike bringing in Bruney in with a decent lead to “boost his confidence” only to see that gone in a flash.
fyi, this is not officially a save situation.
I would have left him in there for one more batter and if he got him I’d let him go for the third out. Alright MO please make this easy on yourself.
f??k Hughes, Mo cannot get a night off.
the Truth Squad,
Its not a save situation
You have to win 3 more games to win the World Series. Get two more outs it’s down to two. Bring in Mo.
Hughes fastrball is straight as an arrow. You win tonight and piece together the bridge to Mo however, best you can, minus Hughes.
You can eff around with a WS game. Bring in Mo and nail this down.
At least Hughes wasn’t trying to nibble.
You need to get Hughes right.
It was a low risk, high reward move.
Can’t blame Girardi for pitching Hughes in a non-save situation.
How does that help Hughes’ confidence if he gets taken out after 1 run.
I was so rooting for Phil,he’s lost. The only one in relief that didn’t get three outs. That ball was begging to be hit.
guys…gotta win the series…he has to go to mo here…
just hope this doesn’t carry over to next season for hughes…
You can’t eff around with a WS game. Bring in Mo and nail this down.
Girardi is so dumb.
This is not even a save situation, and once again he makes a desperate, panic move that could win a battle but lose a war.
Giving Rivera the day off today could have been a series changing move, in that Rivera could have been available to go 4 or 5 outs perhaps for each of the next 2 games. Instead, another knee jerk, panic move that could affect the rest of these games, and another UNNECESSARY move.
Wang IS Taiwan November 1st, 2009 at 12:38 am
I believe Donnie Baseball would be a great manager — that he would show confidence in the guys without being hogtied to a stupid stat book.
Girardi and that stupid stat book won 103 games are are in the world series ready to take the lead in this series. That’s tough to beat.
How are they going to get Hughes conifence if he doesn’t even give him another batter??? One of these nights Mo isn’t going to have it. You can’t panic and go right to him.
If I see Hughes pitch again this year I’m going to scream. It’s the bottom of the order and he couldn’t get the job done and they have to bring in Mo. What a waste.
IDK what happened to Hughes, I mean this is the same kid that basically saved our season. What’s going on in the POs?
Nick in SF,
I Love the In N Out receipt!
Two Mo outs.
Why is it that big of a surprise that he is bringing in Mo? It’s a save situation in the world series…
How did Hughes struggle?
I meant confidence
I had no problem bringing Phil in at all – it was the only move to make. At this point, however, the kid is useless. It’s sad how far he’s fallen – he’s going to have some serious work to do this off-season.
Get Steps out Mo.
It’s not the end of the world that Hughes gave up that run.
He went right at the hitters.
It would have been worse to me if he walked him.
Matt Stairs is a big guy
Maybe Hughes is pulling a Bruney… “I just wanted Mariano to get the opportunity for a save”
Hughes is just missing location badly and the curve ball that was hit on the ground was a hanger. When you have a chance to go up 2-1 with your ace on the mound tomorrow against the #4 starter for the Phils it’s no time to mess around.
This will be debated? You gotta be kidding me Buck, it’s a save situation in the World Series!!! Put him in his place McCarver!
Nick:
that guy is totally Posada jr. wow..thats uncanny!
Big mistake by Joe – you need to let Hughes try and finish things off. if they get a runner on – fine, but not with a three run lead!
“Girardi is abusing Mo.”
There are no Mariano Rules.
In a save situation, this is his stage.
Matt Stairs= Fat Mustached Curt Schilling
Buck is not telling us there will be a “debate” over bringing in the GREATEST RELIEVER of ALL TIME in a crucial World Series game. At Least McCarver disagrees.
This is 100% the right move. This is the world series folks. These games are enormous. I wouldn’t have even used hughes at all let alone one batter. He should be shut down for the rest of the series in my opinion. He is completely and utterly useless at this point.
“You can’t eff around with a WS game. Bring in Mo and nail this down.”
————
hard to argue that.
Hughes hasn’t shown he can handle being out there.
Either go to Robertson or Mo. Can’t argue either.
Why focus on negatives on a night like this????
Who gives a toss about Hughes confidence…win the game
So much for the Hughes idea. Erica, I’d say people just like your non-baseball amusing thoughts. That’s a compliment.
One Mo.
3 pitch out…good
and now, Rollins who knows how to hit Mariano gets his chance!
3 pitches for 1 out
You have to go to Mo. Win this and you need two more games. You never know what is going to happen tomorrow. You may be saving Mo for nothing. Maybe its a blowout.
Easy out on three pitches. Another quick one and no damage to Mo.
How is this not a save situation???
Well at least Hughes got 1 out….Our bullpen worries me sick.
Joey Ramone,
Its not a save situation
I know people are questioning this move to bring in Rivera, but he only needs two outs and this game is crucial. If they win then we have the advantage in game 4 to go up 3-1. If we lose then its CC trying to tie it up with Cliff Lee pitching Game 5 on full rest.
You worry about today first in the playoffs.
Come on, make Rollins look silly.
3 pitch out
he may get out of it with 6-7 pitches
not a huge deal
All bets are off with that “Phillies in 5″ prediction. Them’s fightin’ words!
C.C. really needs to go the distance tonight.
Matt Stairs…….softball beer league MVP…
YEAH BABY!!!
Hughes can work on his confidence over the winter. If he can’t get outs he can’t pitch in the WS. Dats it.
MO!
Wow, that was quick.
Yankees Win!!!!
I feel bad for Hughes’ confidence and wish he could stay in to get the final two outs, but you don’t mess around in the world series.
5 pitches
2 outs
another save
Mo is the man
Woohoo!!! Nice quick inning by Mo.
We’ll talk about this later.
2-1
Girardi muses
Mariano Rivera
The only answer!!!!!
I thought Rollins said he could hit Mo?
Good thing I’m not at this game.
I’d be asking all the Philly fans how much they paid for their tickets as they moped out of the building.
That’s how you get it done. Thanks Mo !
I like that Mr. “Phils in 5″ Rollins made the last out.
good, Mo only threw 5 pitches!
Yankees win THEEEEEEEE Yankees win
oh – guess Rollins is saving it for his next at back. Game over!
5 pitches eat it Philly!!!!!!!!
there ya go, he threw what 5 or 6 pitches. Shouldn’t affect him at all for tommorow and we win the game with no drama
Easy as pie.
Think 4 pitches will wear Mo out for Game 4?
Forget Phil’s confidence – this is about winning the game. How is it not a save situation when the lead is 3 runs?
For it to be a save with a 3 run lead you either have to start the inning or have the tying run on deck
5 pitch inning. I don’t think there’s anything to worry about.
YES!
Wait, I thought Rollins said they could get to Mo. How’d he do?
Suck on that Buck!!! WOO HOO!!! Rivera threw what 4 pitches there? He’ll be fine, the Phillies on the other hand? They’ve got a bum pitcher going up against our ace, y’all are in trouble!!!
Nice 5 pitch save for Mo!
Great win! Hopefully they crush Blanton tomorrow, and CC pitches a CG shutout!
Mo—————quick & lethal…………
Yep I would have left him in for 1 more batter too. He just threw the high FB to the wrong hitter.
michelle, my brother and I yelled “Jorge!!” to him and he totally looked… he knows the deal.
Nice rip J-roll. You sure figured him out!
They could have used Robertson. When was the last time he pitched?
2 MORE WINS TO GO!!
i thought j-roll had mariano figured out?
Oh boy. We really destroyed rivera there with an entire 5 pitches. He is fully ready to go tomorrow and beyond. Plenty of time to rest after the season.
the worst case we will come back to Bronx.
Go Yankees!!!
Its not a save because he only got 2 outs.
The only one dumb is you, Matt. Get a clue about baseball before you post. Calling Girardi dumb…pot calling the kettle black, kid.
mo made that look easy.
if we can take 2/3 in philly by winning CC’s start tomorrow, we are in very good shape.
Jimmy Rollins’ prediction is right, this series will be over in five games
the Yankees bullpen did a great job tonight-Marte was simply overpowering, Joba was really good and Mo was Mo. Even if Hughes is in a bad slump having Marte throwing so well and Joba seemingly getting straightened out a little is probably going to be enough to get 2 wins before the Phils win 3.
5 pitches and another save and PLENTY left in the tank to save the game tomorrow for CC…that is…IF CC does now just pitch a CG an REALLY quiet down the Phillies, including bat slamming Werth, the Bastage Fagala !
Rollins is an overated bum
Triple Short of a Cycle
That’s just not true, that was a save situation.
I think Girardi managed masterfully tonight. About as perfect a job managing as we could hope for.
What now Rollins!? What now!? What’d you see about Rivera? You can KNOW whats coming, and it doesn’t make a difference!
Hey Rollins, this World Series may be won in 5 games, but it ain’t gonna be by the Phillies! What now!?
Big mouth gets you in trouble.
The good news: It only took Rivera five pitches to get out of that inning.
He should still be fresh for Games 4 and 5.
So, with NYY having a 2-1 lead in games, will it stop the 2nd guessing and whining until at least the first pitch is thrown, tomorrow?
Yeah Yankees!!! Good game guys!!!
World Series Game III
Pettitte and the Pendulum
Halloween Classic!
BTW, someone should remind Rollins that they still haven’t hit Mo…
That was beautiful
Now telling us.. my bad

Swisher did well tonight. Nice to see him get his bat working for a game in the post season.
Eat this, Manuel – this is for your rude Andy comments and your disrespect for Mo.
Rollins prediction is already wrong.
This is not a save situation, learn the rules. You have to be in there with the tying run on deck unless you start the inning with a 3 run lead, and he did not start the inning and the tying run was not on deck.
It was a panic move, plain and simple, and one that ties his hands in games 4 and 5 since Mo won’t be able to go 2 tomorrow night as a result of this. Girardi has the best roster in baseball, and he refuses to take advantage.
He has no respect and no faith in Hughes, and don’t you think that might be causing this problem as well? When your manager consistently shows that he doesn’t trust you and won’t give you a chance to get it together, I’m sure that hurts your confidence even more. Hughes made 1 bad pitch and gave up a HR, with a 4 run lead, while throwing strikes and challenging guys with a big lead. That is hardly reason to panic, unless you are Joe Girardi.
A stupid move, another blatant case of overmanaging. Hopefully it doesn’t affect the rest of the series.
And I give Mr. Girardi double bunus points for putting Phil in and for yanking him after the homer… both good moves.
Maybe we need Mo tomorrow night, maybe we don’t, but Giradi did the right thing to win THIS game tonight.
Two down, two to go!
KF — if you think that stat book is responsibile for our wins, then you haven’t really been watching our team play the game. It’s when Girardi let his book do the thinking that most of our close games were lost.
Sorry, but there aren’t many savvy book-less managers that couldn’t have takent this team to the WS.
You can give GI Joe’s book all the credit you want, though. We’ll just have to agree to disagree on that account.
How many of Pettitte’s postseason wins has Rivera saved?
“Matt Stairs…….softball beer league MVP…”
Something about that comment made me spit my hot cocoa.
Mo was the right choice, he was warming anyway and you HAD to win this one. Who knows tomorrow the Yanks could be ahead 8-0 in the ninth.
Yay, Yankees!
Girardi isn’t abusing Mo, he is doing the right thing here. Game 4 doesn’t matter if you still are playing Game 3. Hughes had his chance and he knew as soon as he made this a save situation Mo would come in. He got the first out, but failed to their 8th hitter. You can’t do that.
This is the World Series. Mo is in and the Yankees win the pivotal Game 3. How can you criticize? If the Yanks score a lot tomorrow, Mo gets his day off. And to think Mo just threw 5 pitches, how can you debate this?
100 pitches of fun… November 1st, 2009 at 12:45 am
Notice Buck wasn’t excited to say the Yanks won. He sounded upset.
_______________
Yeah, nothing like an unbiased announcer calling the game. We are so lucky.
I wonder if Lee will ask for the ball tomorrow? I wouldn’t be surprised to hear he is pitching the game tomrrow.
The HP umpire tonight was a real POS, or for those who do not approve of such language, a piece of work.
In our hitting innings, namely in the 6th, 7th, 8th, was cheating our hitters left and right. Damon AB, Tex AB. 2-0 counts mainly.
Abusing Mo? Are you kidding? He threw 5 pitches!!!!
Matt, how is Girardi going to here your complaints if you don’t go ALL CAPS???
“michelle, my brother and I yelled “Jorge!!” to him and he totally looked… he knows the deal.”
Nick – cool pic. Do you think it’s a relative?
“It was a panic move, plain and simple, and one that ties his hands in games 4 and 5 since Mo won’t be able to go 2 tomorrow night as a result of this. Girardi has the best roster in baseball, and he refuses to take advantage. ”
Learn the schedule. Rivera isn’t going 2 innings tomorrow with a game on Monday.
“Notice Buck wasn’t excited to say the Yanks won. He sounded upset.”
What a D he is.
Remember folks, we were up 2-1 against the Marlins too, and we all knew how that turned out.
But, I really like our chances with Sabathia on the hill tomorrow. Get that victory, then we’re up 3-1, and the rest is all downhill from there.
Alright off to a halloween affair…its only 10 on the west coast….
P.S. I hope the dolphins kill the trash talking jests….AGAIN!
Matt. Is Baseball for Dummies on your Christmas wish-list?
It should be.
Matt = clueless.
So many errors in your last post regarding Mo and his availability.
Just clueless, son. You are just a clueless troll.
Dispite a small hiccup by Hughes, the bullpen was outstanding. Nice job by the team to get it to Sabathia tomorrow and a chance to push the lead to 3-1. Should be fun. He just needs to turn in the same game he pitched in the opener.
Save the confidence building for spring training. Mo was warmed up anyway, why take a chance.
We won’t need Mo tomorrow when we tee off on the Lard Lad.
god i love being wrong when i think the yankees are gonna lose.
Great game all around – very, very happy for Alex. I was dead wrong about Swish – and glad to be. The pen was great outside of Phil, but we won’t see him anymore anyway.
Major kudos to Andy who did what he had to do……
Joe Buck is a moron. Debated? Bringing in Mo when you have to win three games (now two) to win the World Series?
There is no way that moves should be debated by anyone.
He’s not even half the broadcaster his father was.
Matt, blow off you fool…….
Buck sounds sooo upset. They both want to cry. Get some tissues in the booth.
KF, I’m with you on Girardi. Hands down.
Sleep well. It’s great to be a Yankee fan.

Joe Buck is seriously depressed, do you think he took J-Rolls odds and now has lost a lot of MONEY.
Betsy:
Eat this, Manuel – this is for your rude Andy comments and your disrespect for Mo.

Betsy, I missed his comments. Where were they published? I’m surprised!

I wonder if Lee will ask for the ball tomorrow? I wouldn’t be surprised to hear he is pitching the game tomrrow.
————————
you need to learn something about pitching before you make comments like that. Lee probably threw a side session today or yesterday to get ready for Monday, he couldn’t pitch tomorrow even if he wanted to.
Matt said:
“A stupid move, another blatant case of overmanaging. Hopefully it doesn’t affect the rest of the series.”
We won a world series game on 5 pitches, and you still think bringing in MO was wrong?
I am calling you a bosox fan. Even the dumbest yankee fan wouldn’t say something so absurd.
Ahhhhh. Mitch Williams time.
Buck “We are here in the booooth with our pumpkins”
This is World Series Game 3, and he looks like he is completely out of it. Professionalism just does not exist with FOX, or ESPN.
lol @ A-Rod being the first guy to have a homer reviewed in regular season play and now also the first one to have a homer reviewed in post season play.
I didn’t hear them congratulate the Yankees, just discuss their favorite costumes…..What a way to end a national broadcast
someone kicked Joe Buck in the nuts
unfortunately, it wasn’t me
im pretty sure joe buck is drunk.
With Lee likely pitching against a short rest AJ in Game 5 the Yankees really need to come out win a game they should win tommorow.
If they take care of business in Game 4 then the Phillies have to win 3 straight against AJ, Pettite, and CC.
I don’t know if Cliff Lee can pitch tomorrow. Wouldn’t today have been his throw day?
Good game. Good to win the first in Philly. Now they know the series gets back to NY (if necessary).
It was interesting how Buck and Tim kept saying the HR was a judgement call, rather than a solid HR call. They’re just so obvious.
Anyone think 150 pounds Lee and his pine tar big curveball is pitching tomorrow?
Matt, are you kidding? You care about Hughes’ confidence in the World Series? There is NO time to start worrying about pitchers feelings. I am the first one to be concerned about Hughes and wish he would bounce back soon, but the Yankees cant afford to play psychiatrist at the expense of a WS game.
Did anyone know that the Yankees were in this World Series?
Is is not between the Phillies and the Phillies?
Alex had the first reviewed HR in the regular season. And first reviewed HR in the World Series. I think.
So that was a nice Halloween treat.
They really looked relaxed out there tonight.
Andy didn’t have his best game but fought through it. I thought he pitched better than 4ER in 6.
Swish and Arod came and kicked butt. Alex really looked relaxed at the plate.
And maybe Joba can help them get two more wins.
I like Rollins 5 game prediction afterall.
Yeah. I think it would be tough for Lee to just jump in tomorrow – today was probably his throw day.
It’s nice to know that Matt stays consistent.
Still complaining even though the Yanks are leading the World Series. Gotta love ya bud!
Not a panic move in the least. Joe gave Phil a chance, he failed so he brought Mo in. Game over in 5 pitches. Mo will be available tomorrow and the next day, there is no downside to that move.
Mitch Williams called it right. He said the winner of tonights game would score 8 runs. Except he was wrong in picking the Phillies to get the 8 runs!!!
Mitch Williams-one pitch-walk off WS winning homer by Joe Carter, and he was never the same pitcher.
You tell em Betsy!
Matt -
You have to put yourself in the best position to win the game you are playing tonight — not tomorrow. A panic move would have been starting Mo for the 9th. Girardi tried Hughes, and Hughes could not be trusted after Ruiz. Plain and simple. If Hughes had been lights out lately, I could see leaving him in, but Hughes is obviously in a rut. Girardi would have been crucified if he left him in only to put some guys on and then turn to Mo.
You have the best reliever in the game. World Series. You use him.
You worry about tomorrow, tomorrow.
You may not even need Mo.
Tonight was a huge win with CC going tomorrow night.
sjc
He had to drink himself silly to drown his sorrows. I hope his wife keeps his kids away from him. I would not trust him near children.
Yeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lee isn’t pitching tommorow. If that was in question he would have waiting until after this game to make the announcement.

Matt. Is Baseball for Dummies on your Christmas wish-list?
It should be.
————————————————————
He needs to start with “Baseball For Idiots”. That’s for beginners. “Baseball For Dummies” is more advanced 4th graders.
Halloween Eve Party in like 2 hrs. so I’m outta here. Later Lohud.
YANKEES BABY!!!! ALL THE WAY!!
2 MORE WINS!!! THEN ITS PARTY TIME FOR REAL!!!
I repeat, Lee CAN’T pitch tomorrow. Starting pitchers always throw in between starts when they have 4 days rest-it was either today or yesterday. He is UNAVAILABLE tomorrow.
Tomorrow is a big game for the Yanks. If Lee stays on track and pitches game 5 and you would assume that he will pitch another good game. Yanks need to treat Blanton the way they did Hamels today. Hamels lost it very quick.
-I’ll bet Manuel moves Lee up now.Mo threw 39 pitches thurs day for 2 innings.Tonight 2 outs needed he throws 5 pitches.
-Philly has to be concerned that Alex is hitting and Ryan isn’t
-Big game Andy has bragging rights for the hit tonight.
-Rollins won’t get his wish.
-Yankees 2 games away from # 27!!
His father was such a great man, a legend, a truely class act. Joe is so shameful, his father must turning in his grave.
Hughes will strike out the side tomorrow.
Cliff Lee wants no part of 3 days rest. He’s made that clear.
Can’t wait to fix his wagon and finish this Series in Philly.
I would have loved to see Hughes lock it down there but the good news is that he threw strikes..
new thread
Phil had his chance. He’s got to stop sulking. So Joba and Marte moved ahead of him. Be a team player. Joe pulling him is akin to benching Swisher. Good job Joe.
Wang, I will try to post them later. Manuel basically said Andy was old and that his Indians teams had success against him………(which means exactly what?)….. They were so disrespectful.
Doreen-
Earlier McCarver did feel it was a homer. I can’t stand listening to McCarver, but he has been better in fairly calling the game with less obvious bias for the Phillies for whom he spent the last six years of his career.
It was absolutely the right move bringing in Mo. Giving Hughes a chance to right himself was all well and good, but even on the single out he got, he got away with a fat hanging curve. After he gave up the home run to Ruiz, he’d be looking at Stairs and then the top of the order. Would you want to mess around and take that chance?
Joe Buck needs to be on the scrap heap like Steve Phillips collecting a welfare check
How’d you like Andy’s RBI single, Betsy?
new thread
Manuel was banking on winning one of Game 3 or 4 with Lee going in Game 5. Game 3 was the easier of the 2 on paper and the Yanks won that one.
We can’t let them get that split tommorow because if they do the advantage goes back to them…

Maybe Nostra-Rollins misremembers what he saw in his vision… it was Phillies in 5, but they LOSE in 5.
I repeat, Lee CAN’T pitch tomorrow
———————-
You don’t know if maybe he didn’t throw incase he was needed for tomorrow if they lost tonight. You don’t know if he threw or not.
The odds of winning this series just increased dramatically. Only two starts for Lee total. We have two starts possible for C.C.
The Phillies are a great tram but I think we have a good chance now.
Glad to see Swisher succeed
I’ll be shocked if Lee pitches tommorow. If he sends Lee up against CC tommorow and he loses then the Phillies are done…
Phillies in 5 isn’t looking to likely :>)
Charlie Manuel crying about A-Rod’s HR in his press conference
Philly is always crying no matter what sport
Yankee Trader -
You’re correct. It was Buck who kept saying it was a judgement call. McCarver did say HR.
Pettite is such a grinder. They have to resign him for next year unless he decides to retire..
Guys, that was NOT a save situation.
NOT A SAVE SITUATION.
OBVIOUS OVERMANAGING.
Getting Rivera that day off could have allowed you to use him for additional outs the next day. That could have been huge with a chance to go up 3-1 in the series. Every out you use him for today is one less he probably can get tomorrow.
Winning the war is more important. Knee jerk, panic moves do not help you win the war, they make your own life more difficult down the line. Thinking long term is more important when the game is pretty much over.
Now you know CC wants a WS win. He’s the only one on the starting rotation that hasn’t won, after getting the ALCS MVP.
Now if Tex,Cano, and Melky would just start hitting.
Pettitte battling through the early innings is what won this game. Lesser pitchers would have folded… and our hopes would rest on Gaudin/Aceves trying to navigate the middle innings in Philly.
Hughes could not be trusted?
Wake up guys.
He was pounding the strike zone because he had a huge lead. That is why he gave up a HR, not that he can’t “be trusted” but that he was LAYING IT IN THERE to avoid walking hitters with a big lead, and TRUSTING HIS STUFF. Funny, I thought those were signs that a guy was confident and pitching to the score?
But obviously you don’t think it’s a panic move because you all were blatantly biased against bringing in Hughes in the first place. You all wanted to bring in Mo to begin an inning with a 4 run lead 2 days after he threw 39 pitches, when there are 3 days in a row with games.
The chance of winning the game when you bring in Mo goes up maybe 1%. Is that worth making him throw pitches? Stop with the 5 pitches thing. Just having him warm up and throw any pitches means that he has to work and doesn’t get to recover from the 39 pitch outing. Getting Rivera that day off means you can use him for 4-5 outs each game for the next 2 days because of the day off afterwards, but now you have to be careful not to burn him out.
Of course Mo won’t say to not give him the ball. But that’s not the point. If his cutter is just a little less sharp, or his control a little off, and he makes a mistake over the plate, his stuff is more hittable than it has ever been. Winning this game is important, but this game was over, and you know it. Bringing in Rivera changed nothing, except his level of fatigue.
Well said Matt. I hated bring in Mo even though “he only threw 5 pitches.” Its a waste of your best pitcher in a low leverage situation. You could have used Robertson and if he put a guy on, then bring in Mo. He could have easily thrown 23 pitches that inning like the other night. Then what?
