One away

On the strength of another clutch hit from Alex Rodriguez (and a great at-bat by Johnny Damon), the Yankees stormed back in the ninth and beat the Phillies, 7-4, in Game 4 of the World Series. They’re one win away from their 27th championship. Stay here for all the clubhouse reaction.

UPDATE, 12:12 a.m.: Johnny Damon said the key to his taking third base was seeing “how Pedro (Feliz) caught the throw.” He also said that Alex Rodriguez “is the reason why we’re here.”

“We’re at 10 (wins),” Damon said. “Hopefully we get 11 tomorrow.”

UPDATE, 12:15 a.m.: CC said he thought the warning was “premature” but Joe Girardi said the umpires told him that CC should feel free to pitch inside and that there would not be any automatic ejections if someone got hit. “It didn’t affect me at all,” Sabathia said.

UPDATE, 12:46 a.m.: A-Rod said, “There’s no question, I have never had a bigger hit.”

In a twisted way, we have none other than the Boston Red Sox to thank for this.

No really .. stick with me on this one …

    They blew the A-Rod trade.

  22. Blackaccord November 1st, 2009 at 11:55 pm

I think Tim mccarver did a good job in explaining Lidge’s pitching.. With man on 3rd, all lidge was able to throw was fast balls… A slider in the dirt could be a wild pitch allowing a run to score… Damon taking 3rd on that stolen base was so critical…

  34. minnesota yankee fan November 1st, 2009 at 11:57 pm

Wow! Great win Yankees! JD really got it going for them!

Totally off message, here are some Twitter comments made during the game for those of us who had to endure Joe Buck and Tim McCarver.

“He got him from the second base side of second base.” – Tim McCarver

Tim McCarver just said don’t forget to set your clocks back an hour so you’re not late.

Only tim mccarver could be late because he didn’t fall back.

Tim McCarver needs to stop calling pitches. He’s right about 10% of the time.

I’m sorry, Tim McCarver, but October of 2008 is NOT “the last two years.”

Tim McCarver just called Elston Howard a “great Yankee great”

Listening to Joe Buck and Tim McCarver would be helpful if I knew nothing about baseball or I was a complete idiot

Yes Tim McCarver, once they pinch hit for him, Joba can no longer pitch.

“lidge’s slider is so good. look for 1 in the dirt.” pause. pitch. “fastball. high.”

I think if we put Tim McCarver and Joe Morgan in the same broadcast booth, baseball would cease to exist.

Tim McCarver talking about common sense: does not compute, does not compute.

Common sense would tell you Tim McCarver is an idiot

If you ask Tim McCarver what time it is, he will tell you how a watch works instead.

All is good. Yankees win the series tomorrow!!!!!!!!11

  35. Betsy November 1st, 2009 at 11:57 pm

Devastating loss for Philly, but they have Lee going tomorrow.

CB, I may have missed your answer, but what are your thoughts about AJ tomorrow instead of Gaudin? I think it’s a mistake……

  36. raymagnetic - And Now They Get CC November 1st, 2009 at 11:57 pm

“Raymagnetic, you have to be kidding me. Mariano has thrown about 13 pitches in the past two days.”

    ONE MORE TO GO!!

  38. CB November 1st, 2009 at 11:57 pm

“Yup – & let’s not forget just a thoroughly professional AB by Johnny Damon.”

There just no way to underestimate what Damon did there. His defense hurt the team this game but his at bat in the 9nth off of Lidge was classic Johnny Damon.

That at bat by Damon made me think about what he used to do to the yankees late in games when he was on Boston.

Just fouling off one good pitch after another after another. Just a very “annoying” at bat if you’re the pitcher.

But just an amazing performance for the yankees. Fighting off all of those pitches to then single.

He literally breathed life back into the yankee’s world series chances.

Honestly – they lose this game given the pitching match up and the yankees are in some trouble.

  54. blake November 1st, 2009 at 11:59 pm

Of course they need to show up. Philly has the pitching advantage tommorow and all our pitchers are on 3 days rest from now on. I think we have a decided bullpen advantage though and its tough to win 3 straight against a team with a better bullpen than you..

  55. Boston Dave - ONE win til 27 November 1st, 2009 at 11:59 pm

    CB,

Lidge was so afraid of walking Damon that he refused to throw the slider on 3-2, even after Damon fouled off pitch after pitch.

Damon had chased 2 sliders, I believe, in the AB

I found the pitch selection a little curious. I understand the thought process, but I figure they would have gone back to a slider after the first 2 fouled fastballs.

  56. ANSKY November 1st, 2009 at 11:59 pm

Mo won’t be pitching tomorrow. Even if Burnett gives up 1 run, we won’t get the lead off of Lee.

The consolation is that the Yanks can then go on and win the world series in NY, off Pedro, in game 6.

3-1 yankees, how about the Damon at bat,it was the bomb!

  63. SherriM122 November 2nd, 2009 at 12:01 am

Can’t wait for tomorrow night! You know, Cliff Lee and A.J. Burnett grew up about 30 miles from each other? Both from Central Arkansas?

  64. CB November 2nd, 2009 at 12:01 am

“I may have missed your answer, but what are your thoughts about AJ tomorrow instead of Gaudin? I think it’s a mistake……”

    Betsy,

I did answer before. I would 100% pitch AJ on short rest tomorrow.

There’s now way I would throw Gaudin over AJ on short rest given how little Gaudin has thrown. He’s completely out of game form.

AJ has a huge arm. He should be more than strong enough to pitch on three days rest.

I’m more concerned about AJ being too hyped up pitching on the road in front of a hostile crowd than I am about the rest issue.

  65. Todd November 2nd, 2009 at 12:01 am

When I first saw Damon take off for 3rd, with the fielder holding the ball, I thought Damon had mistakenly thought the throw to 2nd had gone into center, and that he’d be out at 3rd easily…

  66. DT - OPPC member November 2nd, 2009 at 12:01 am

That double steal from Damon was Jeter-esque.
    A totally heads up play.

Having Damon at third took a big pitch away from Lidge.
He didn’t have confidence to throw that slider in the dirt.

  67. rb November 2nd, 2009 at 12:01 am

    Two things:

    1. I love how Posada went to Joba after the end of the top half of the ninth.

    2. Which Phillie gets drilled tomorrow?

    Oh yeah and…

I LOVE this team. You can never count them out.

  68. Yankees Rule November 2nd, 2009 at 12:02 am

Did anyone see this coming?!!! I did not! What a thrilleing win!

We’re one win away from winning this title. Why pitch AJ against Cliff? why not pitch Gaudan (is he stll around??) tomorrow and win one game back home?? AJ against Pedro again. Wouldn’t that be a safer route to go? We just need one more win… not yet done, we’ve been this road before. That one win isn’t easy. That’s why I agree with Mike Francesa – Save AJ for the game in NY…

  74. sadf November 2nd, 2009 at 12:02 am

I think the best decision of the game was taking out CC early, at 95 pitches. Why? Because it was obvious his command wasn’t all there, and that it wasn’t worth overworking him.

Chamberlain looked untouchable, almost in Mariano fashion. Too bad the home run overshadowed his stunning performance.

  104. blake November 2nd, 2009 at 12:07 am

I thought Girardi managed another good game tonight. He pulled CC at the right time. I loved the move to steal Damon with 2 outs there and that was huge.

Johnny Damon deserves a new nickname. I’ll go with “Willie Sutton Damon”. He made a living out of robbing banks around Philadelphia. He’s certainly robbed the Phillies bank tonight.

  112. CB November 2nd, 2009 at 12:08 am

“Lidge was so afraid of walking Damon that he refused to throw the slider on 3-2, even after Damon fouled off pitch after pitch.”

    BD,

This is the huge limitation on Lidge’s game and what will always be what makes him such a feast or famine guy.

He just doesn’t have the ability to be consistent with the tool that makes him great at moments.

He just doesn’t have great command of his slider. So he literally becomes a very different pitcher when he falls behind.

And he just didn’t want to walk Damon. And rightly so.

But he didn’t have the tools to put Damon away without his slider.

Again – that was the same downfall for Lidge against Alex. Lidge didn’t have enough confidence in his slider to really snap one off against Alex with a man on third.

His fastball is hard but relatively straight.

Thanks to Damon’s at bat and his brilliant base running the yankees literally boxed Lidge into a corner where he just lost the ability to use his biggest weapon.

That was the story of the ninth inning.

If AJ does as well as Lee – which is not impossible – Manuel will be desperate for runs. And if the Yanks can again get into the Phils’ bullpen, we’ll be in good shape.

You know, I have to say, on paper I respect Charlie Manuel and all he’s been through. But the more I’ve seen of him, the less I like him. What a peevish, petty, unpleasant individual. Perfect for Philly.

Anyway, I’m pleased. Boston is nowhere. We’ve beaten Anaheim, thereby extinguishing the 2002 and 2005 debacle, we’ve won 3 games in a series, already doing more than we did in 2003. A-Rod is hitting.

I hope that we continue our upward trajectory. I hope the offense continues to improve. I will miss Melky though—I am not a Brett Gardner fan.

And I’m not scared of Cliff Lee. He’s not unhittable. The Yanks need to remind themselves of this.

  171. CB November 2nd, 2009 at 12:16 am

The story of this team this year has been to get the starting pitcher out of the game early and beat up the other teams pen.

This game followed that script – thought they waited until the 9nth with two outs to start!

Alex’s home run last night completely turned the game around. They were down 3-0 and Hamels was dealing.

Alex completely changed the dynamic of that entire game.

Tonight he just got a hit that might be remembered for the ages.

What a playoffs he’s had. Just amazing.

The swing he put on that ball from lidge was the best swing he’s had this entire world series.

And what a time to do that.

Then Posada’s hit was just huge as well. Given how frequently Mo has thrown this series giving him a 3 run lead iced the game.

And the phillies had dismal at bats in the 9th. They looked defeated. There is just no way that Mo is ever going to blow a 3 run lead. And the phillies knew that. A one run game would have been a very different story.

you would think that after all these wins in the late innings, all of the great things that these guys do as a team to pick each other up…

you would think that being up 2-1 in games and tied in the 9th inning of game 4 that true fans would realize that they had a great chance of winning

then you read the crap written on this blog before they put the game away and realize how pathetic some of you are as fans.

you don’t deserve to root for this team, you don’t deserve to celebrate the World Series championship coming up in the next few days.

the true measure of a great team like the 2009 Yankees is that someone always steps up to do something to win a game. Tonight it was 7 guys-Damon, Jeter, Arod, Posada, CC, Marte, and Mo. But everyone else contributed as well.

Maybe some of you will get it eventually but, in all likelihood, you’ll still be complaining for the rest of the series and for years to come.

  194. CB November 2nd, 2009 at 12:20 am

“As someone posted earlier, this being an NL game will make it more likely that Lee is lifted a little earlier tomorrow for a pinch hitter. ”

The big thing to watch for tomorrow is whether the yankees can get a lead – any kind of lead that they can maintain past the 5th inning.

If the yanks can do that then the Phillies might be forced to pull pinch hit for Lee.

The yanks get a lead and the phillies are in big trouble tomorrow, especially given how many pitches Madsen has thrown the past few days and Lidge today.

    Mike Jaret agreed.

Yankee pitching has kept teams from reaching their regular season level.

Also the Yankee offense may not be playing at it’s peak, but the pressure they bring to fielders and pitchers makes them press and we see many of the errors/mistakes that have paved the way to victory.

This series isn’t over. We certainly have the advantage but if the Phils win tommorow then we have Andy going on short rest in game 6 which you have to worry about at least a little and then you have CC going in Game 7 in his 2nd straight short rest start. CC hasn’t been very sharp in either start in this series.

That said, I think it will be hard to beat this team 3 straight especially with the Phil’s bullpen. I would really love it if they would just hammer Lee tommorow

I don’t know what to say – it’s already been said here! :)

As I told my dear wife, no where but baseball do you have emotions turned so completely around in so short a time.

Johnny had a heck of a game, and Alex came through again. CC did his part, and grinded. Joba tried, but just missed his location on that pitch. And Jorge iced it.

Mo needed, what, 7 or 8 pitches? Yeah, the only closer who’s yet to blow one this postseason. Stuff that, Charlie Manuel.

I have to get up at 5:30 in the morning. It will be hard falling to sleep. Let’s win it tomorrow.

The only Pete Abe curse that I know about is every time Alex Rodriguez knocks in a game winning hit. It kills him.

Rodriguez has only had two hits in the WS, but the hits have been “cherce” hits.

Right now, the MVP will depend on AJ Burnett’s game tomorrow. If he gets the win, he’s it. He’s the key, but, needs 7 solid innings. Being not as strong could very well work in his favor, because he should throw more breaking pitches, but, he’ll still have plenty of fastball, just less likely to yank it out of the strike zone. He’s my pick.

Pitching AJ tomorrow is great because it gives you a fair chance to win the game 5, whereas realistically you likely lose if Gaudin starts.

However, the move does make the pitching staff weaker for Games 6 and 7 if you don’t win Game 5. Basically IMO pitching AJ in Game 5 gives you a better chance to win Game 5 but hurts your chances in Games 6 and 7 if Game 5 is lost. If Gaudin pitched then AJ would be fully rested for Game 6 and maybe more importantly Pettitte could pitch out of the pen in either Game 6 or 7.

Lets just win tommorow and then it won’t matter

Wow, that’s pretty bad for Manual to disparage Andy like that.

Too bad that Manual’s brain-power is in rapid decline. Nice move starting Blanton instead of Lee! They waved the white flag by doing that; clearly didn’t deserve to win!

The Phils are lucky it’s even been this close. The Yankees are by far the better team. I stand by what I’ve said before: The Angels were the bigger threat.

Is anyone on the same page as me in wanting Joe to go with Gaudin tomorrow night vs Lee? Its gonna be a tough game with Lee anyway, Burnett has shown he handles the big stage at home very well, and he is on short rest. Yes, I know he has pitched on short rest before and been fine, but even if he pitches a great game, its no lock he wins. Just saying, I would much prefer a fully rested Burnett at home vs Pedro in Game 6 with CC and Andy ready for relief help and game 7.

That speaks pretty poorly of Cliff Lee. Probably the only thing I agreed with McCarver on tonight was that Lee should’ve demanded that Manuel give him the ball for Game 4.

Very stupid for Manuel not to want to have Lee to pitch as much as possible.

    To paraphrase a famous Yankee:

I thank the Good Lord for making me a Yankee fan.

That’s all I can say about tonight.

    A few notes:

Joba has it. They now have the 8th inning guy.
Marte has it. They now have the 7th inning guy-lefty guy.
Mo. The only question is does he go more than 3 outs tomorrow.

AJ should give 7-8. This reminds me of the Boston game at YS in early August, when he went toe to toe with Beckett. Remember ARod won that one in the 15th. Could he have a crappy start? Sure, but then the WS goes back to YS with the pitching matchups favoring the Yankees, even on short rest.

Lee is Lee, but perhaps he is due for a few runs given the pressure. If they are down after the 6th, he’s got to come out for a pinch hitter. If that happens, it can only be good.

Prediction: Yankees 3-1. Loser is Lidge or Madsen.

Agree with everything you just said. I was also trying to make the point that there’s a difference between a pitcher “demanding” the ball so he can pitch on short rest (as Michael Kay repeatedly said was the case) versus being “told” you are pitching on short rest (which is exactly what Burnett HIMSELF said happened in his presser). I Don’t know if Kay is manufacturing a storyline or not but it’s annoying. It’s also a little less exciting because you’d love to have a pitcher ask for the ball on short rest rather than be told – just in terms of his state of mind, etc.

As good as Lee is, the notion that he’s going to be untouchable again is silly.

It’s baseball. Anything can happen in a single game. Lee could give up five early runs and get chased by the fifth. No one knows how tomorrow will play out.

Speaking of chasing, I am glad we stopped chasing games in this series. That was concerning. You do that too often, sometimes you don’t catch up to the game you’re chasing.

  367. Dave November 2nd, 2009 at 1:07 am

I really don’t like that scenario – it’s an Achilles’s heel type situation

  368. JeterHughesJoba November 2nd, 2009 at 1:08 am

    Dave,

Who knows if the final decision came down to AJ demanding the ball, being told he was pitching on short rest, or maybe even being a mutual agreement.

I do know that AJ had be telling the media even before the series that he was more than willing to pitch on short rest. Based on that alone, I have alot of respect for him stepping up.

  369. 100 pitches of fun... November 2nd, 2009 at 1:08 am

Pitching AJ tomorrow is the right move. But…I hope they give him giant cotton balls so he tunes out the fans. Andy and CC handled the crowd fine but I hope he can. CC has not had great command on 3 days rest, will command effect AJ? He doesn’t have good command to begin with so I hope he can throw strikes. He is going to be very amped up and will need to control his emotions. I hope Andy talks to him before the game.

Just had this thought… Remember that Pete at the beginning of the year predicted a Yankee World Series? Now we’re 1 game away.

  371. Abdababdaserser November 2nd, 2009 at 1:08 am

I am kind of getting a kick out of watching how sick Gammons and Kruk are looking right now.

Kruk, sitting there with his playoff beard, looking like someone stole his ice cream, is just priceless. He looks like he is ill. He doesn’t know what to do with himself as he was probably torn a new one from the rant about Alex’s HR.

Charlie Manuel looked like he was going to be crying soon in the little snippet I saw of him. Hmmm, was he in the movie Deliverance?

  372. Dave November 2nd, 2009 at 1:08 am

    JeterHughesJoba

On that we most certainly agree.

Betsy: the good news is that you’re not going to have to worry about Andy on short rest. :)

Odd that they still block PA’s name on here. I suppose it’s protection from the meanies. There is a snitch from one of the techs/writers that report to him all of the mean things that’s said. I got a nasty e-mail a couple of days ago from The Superstar.

  382. JeterHughesJoba November 2nd, 2009 at 1:12 am

“Joba has it. They now have the 8th inning guy.
Marte has it. They now have the 7th inning guy-lefty guy.
Mo. The only question is does he go more than 3 outs tomorrow.”

    PittsburghYankeeFan:

Sounds pretty good. The only thing I would add to that mix is having Robertson available for the 7th/8th. His only blemish this entire postseason was that grounder that Ibanez hit in Game 1 that found it’s way through the hole at first. Other than that, the kid has been very aggressive and effective. I have no idea why Girardi has banished him to the doghouse.

    “I don’t like Andy on 3 days at all……..”

Good, because the Yankees are winning tomorrow and Andy will have five months rest before his next start.

  384. Abdababdaserser November 2nd, 2009 at 1:13 am

I almost wonder if Jorge continuing to run to second into an out was so Mo could get the save. lol.

  385. bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes November 2nd, 2009 at 1:15 am

That’s the first intelligent thing Mitch Williams has said.

I wonder if someone was holding up a cue card.

  386. Uncle Ellsworth November 2nd, 2009 at 1:16 am

Try not to worry about game 6. Faith in this team should not be a hard thing.

  387. Abdababdaserser November 2nd, 2009 at 1:18 am

The one thing not being talked about is how poor the strike zone was tonight. CC may not have been in total command of his pitches, but there were far too many pitches called balls that had been strikes for Blanton.

I hope the strike zone tomorrow is consistent for both teams.

I would also really love to see Cliff Lee blow it big time. I can understand confidence, but his act in game one was way over the top. I want him to be taken down a few hundred pegs.

  388. JeterHughesJoba November 2nd, 2009 at 1:19 am

Too add onto my thoughts about the pen:

Yes Mo should definitely be available for at least 4 outs… maybe even 6. Especially when you consider that Mo has faced 5 batters that last two nights and used only 13 pitches to get them out!!

To to put the foot on the throat tonight and end it!

  389. Zach in Port Jeff November 2nd, 2009 at 1:19 am

The Yankees have scored 31 runs this postseason from the 7th inning onwards.

    Mind boggling and amazing.

  390. tex's friend November 2nd, 2009 at 1:20 am

best way to shut lee up is to beat him. yankees should be motivated by his arrogance.

  391. JZ November 2nd, 2009 at 1:22 am

be honest, both managers are gambling. Charlie loses tonight.
Hopefully Joe’s short rest gamble pays off.

  392. PittsburghYankeeFan November 2nd, 2009 at 1:22 am

    Parting thought:

This entire season, Cliff Lee has not had 5 dominant starts in a row. He has been shellacked roughly every fifth start.

Not saying that it’s happening tonight, but food for thought.

  393. Yanks09 November 2nd, 2009 at 1:22 am

Has anyone else noticed that MLB failed to credit mo with last night’s save? Whichever company provides their statistics (Elias?) messed up and said there was no save recorded last night. You can check the box score from the Saturdays game on MLB.com. Even weirder, the box scores from SI and NYT have the same error (I guess they just feed from MLB)…trusty old espn is the only one that has it right…

  394. Hugh Stacks November 2nd, 2009 at 1:22 am

Anyone else notice Blanton’s “substance” on the brim of his cap? And he kept blatantly wiping his forehead, to get moisture, and then go to brim, to get whatever was there…after every single pitch!

  395. Abdababdaserser November 2nd, 2009 at 1:22 am

Alex will hit three five run home runs tomorrow and close the deal. ;)

  396. Carlo November 2nd, 2009 at 1:23 am

The term “presser” is incredibly annoying and lame.

  397. Carlo November 2nd, 2009 at 1:26 am

    Food for thought:
Country Joe West would be the HP ump in a potential Game 6 that would feature Andy and Pedro. Both guys will exploit the big strike zone.

  398. Abdababdaserser November 2nd, 2009 at 1:28 am

Yanks09, it was not a save when Mo came in. He would have had to start the inning with a 3 run lead or less, or have the tying run on deck. So it wasn’t a save, that is why it is not giving him credit for it.

Hugh Stacks, I am always suspicious when I see brown colored stuff on the brim of a pitchers cap. There was also some questions raised about Lee using some pine tar or something. That said, I won’t go down that road without there being something substantive. Suspicious, yes, but hard to say it was anything.

  399. Abdababdaserser November 2nd, 2009 at 1:31 am

I am still waiting for Howard to touch the base on that run he scored.

  400. berri November 2nd, 2009 at 4:22 am

Yeah. Howard didn’t touch home plate in that inning and nothing was said about it. I don’t understand that at all!!!!

  401. DF November 2nd, 2009 at 9:25 am

I’ve been following baseball since 1973 and I never saw anyone steal two bases on one play. That will go down in Yankee and World Series history as one of the most heads up plays ever.
