Andy Pettitte pitched and hit as the Yankees beat the Phillies to take a two-games-to-one lead in the World Series. Chad Jennings has all the details on a rainy night at Citizens Bank Park.

The Yankees bats finally delivered the kind of performance everyone had been waiting for, I wrote in my column. After two games dominated by pitching, this win belonged to the offense.

Joe Girardi named CC Sabathia as his Game 4 starter and it’s possible that A.J. Burnett (and Pettitte) will follow Sabathia’s lead and make starts on short rest. Girardi doesn’t seem concerned; after all, there will be plenty of time to take it easy in about a week.

Nick Swisher busted out of a postseason slump with two hits in Game 3 including a home run. The notebook also has items on Hideki Matsui (he homered as well), Chad Gaudin’s availability and Yankee Stadium being opened up for fans to come watch Game 4 on the big screen tonight.

    CC’s game tonight.
    how will he do? predictions?

  2. 86w183

I always love the Yanks’ chances when Pettite drives in more runs than Utley and Howard combined.

Major pressure on the Phils in Game four. If the Yanks can go up 3-1 they’ll be more likely to rest AJ and all big give # 5 to Philly in a Gaudin/Lee match up.

Great to see Swisher and Damon have good at bats. # 27 looks mighty close, but there’s still some work to do.

  3. pat

In the WS, CC doesn’t have a win, Tex and Alex are batting .100, Marte is the most effective reliever not named Mo and the Yanks are up 2-1 in the series.

    Baseball, go figure.

  4. Drive 4-5

Damaso Marte’s effectiveness in the postseaon has been the most pleasant surprise to date. Last night he was downright nasty. He’s come a long way from the guy that got lit up for 4 runs in 1/3 of an inning against Baltimore in September to the top lefty in Girardi’s pecking order. Not much has been said about it, but Girardi deserves credit for hanging in there with Marte and Marte should get kudos for the work he’s done.

Kruk can cry and yell all he wants-it does not matter:

“Because we cannot control what the cameraman does with the camera, one of the specific ground rules is that when the ball hits the camera, it’s a home run.”

I couldn’t watch the whole game but I saw the condensed game on my iphone this morning. What was the deal with a rod getting pegged? He looked angry but then again he was nailed in the side. Just wondering what the reaction was like.

Question for anybody out there with the answer: Why wasn’t Mo awarded a save? The Yankees won by only three runs.
    —————————————-

Mo either needed to have entered at the beginning of the inning or had the tying run on deck.

  9. Neil

Shudder to think what might have been if Andy didn’t come back for this season.
His veteran presence should be back again for 2010.
    Any questions ?

  10. 108 stitches

If needed Mariano can be available for tonight’s game. He threw just 5 pitches last night.

  11. G.R.

    Wade –
Alex got hit TWICE in last night’s game – thus the look!

    Drive 4-5 -
Agreed! What a great time for him to be effective! Girardi HAS been a little over doing some choices, but I don’t think he gets near enough credit on here for the good things he does do! Thanks for that! Love your posts!

  12. austinmac

If Andy wants to play again the Yankees have to bring him back. More guaranteed money will be required since he was healthy all year. Even if he comes back they need a middle of the rotation starter since I don’t think you can count on both Hughes and Chamberlain.

  13. jaybird

    Rollins: “Phillies in 10!!!”

    Yeah, 2010.

  14. Drive 4-5

Thanks G.R. Now if only they can find a way to get Hughes going, hey?:)

  15. Wait till the World Series

All of Joe’s WS decisions so far have worked beautifully.

  16. 86w183

I agree that Andy has earned a return if he so desires. Not sure the guaranteed money has to go up much, he will be 38 in June on our mutual birthday (15th). He will be 14 years younger than me.

I really like the way Joba is throwing now. He and Marte are more reliable than Hughes at this point in time.

I still have a feeling either Hughes or Joba will be in the bullpen next year.

  17. Phixit Phil

2 to go … just phinish these philandering Philadelphia Phillies and their Phanaticical Phunnyman the Phanatic .. Jimmy Rollins made a phoolish statement, now Phinish them in 2.

  18. Drive 4-5

Chad posted some excellent audio last night. On the audio from Pettitte last night Andy mentioned a few times how his legs were “gassed”. You wonder if he’ll still be effective if he has to next pitch on 3 days rest in a Game 6. Here’s hoping we wrap it up in Philly, although I do have tix for Game 7 lol

  19. murphydog

Great game. Came at a good time – I needed the good news. Please forgive the purely personal detour:

For the last few weeks my dog, (Murphy), has been in and out of vets offices. No one was sure what was wrong and at 13 years old, the guess was “old age.” But yesterday I had to take her to a veterinary hospital for a heart procedure. She was having trouble breathing, had stopped eating or drinking and and was very lethargic. I’ll skip the details, but fluid is accumulating in the sac around her heart and she’s in tough shape. Believe it or not Murph and I’ll be seeing a doggy cardiologist next, assuming all goes well with the last procedure, and he’ll be ruling on whether it’s a tumor causing all the trouble.

Murph’s a bull terrier and very sweet. All white except for black ears and a black patch over her left eye. Loves cheese and chewing on hardcover books and is a committed Yankee fan – she’s watched all or most of all 162 games with me every year for the last 13. (She doesn’t seem to like A-Rod, but maybe that’ll change after this year – she’s 13 and his number is 13).

She’s been there for me through thick and thin, but now she’s in a fight just to keep going. Not sure if you are supposed to pray for dogs, but this one needs all the help she can get. So while you’re enjoying the afterglow of a big win, please take a minute and think a good thought about an old dog. Thanks.

    And Let’s go Yankees.

  20. yankee21

murphy, will do, I can relate as we have an American Eskimo that just turned 16 that has also had significant challenges.

  23. yankee21

..”I still have a feeling either Hughes or Joba will be in the bullpen next year”.

Much more on this next week after the series but I think it is highly doubtful Joba will be in the BP,he’ll be a starter either for the Yankees or another team as part of a big trade package. He has worked over 150 innings this year they are not grooming him to be a reliever.

That said, I thought both he and Marte’s effort out of the pen last night were the key factors in winning.

Hughes might start out in the BP to keep his innings down, but I can’t imagine the Yankees not grooming him as a starter.

  24. jowhite

CC will go 7 strong tonight, nothing pushed across on him.

He’s ready and up to it.

  25. Laura - "You should know I bleed Blue, but I ain't a Crip though"

The Yankee hitters have a great record against Blanton. I’m expecting a lot of runs from the offense tonight.

I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but we could sweep in PHI. There’s no way Lee pitches on Monday like he did on Wednesday.

  26. yankee21

…Andy mentioned a few times how his legs were “gassed”. You wonder if he’ll still be effective if he has to next pitch on 3 days rest in a Game 6…

I don’t like Andy’s chances on short rest and I hope the Yankees don’t do it. In fact if CC wins tonight, I pitch Gaudin in game 5 and see where the chips fall. Yes, NY would likely head back to NY 3-2, but then you have a fully rested AJ in game 6 and a fully rested Andy in game 7 or a short rested CC in game 7.

If the Yankees lose tonight then AJ has to pitch game 5 and Andy has to pitch game 6 on short rest, “thems the breaks” as they say. I want to go back to NY either as champs or up at least 3-2. I don’t want to have to win 2 games in NY.

  27. Drive 4-5

    murphydog,

Good luck to you and your friend. I’ve had 2 dogs that lived over 14 years. They were as much part of the family as any of us.

    Murphydog,

Good luck, all the best for your faithful companion.

  29. jpb1973

Kudos to Damaso Marte for his solid inning of relief last night. It appears that he has moved ahead of Phil Coke and Dave Robertson in the bullpen pecking order. His availablity tonight might help Phil Hughes get through an inning of relief. As I see it, the bullpen pecking order should be:

6th inning: Dave Roberston & Phil Coke
    7th inning: Joba Chamberlain
8th inning: Phil Hughes & Damaso Marte
    9th inning: Mo

I was one of those who thought that Marte should have been left off the postseason roster…and I’m glad to admit that I was wrong. Keep up the good work Damaso.

  30. Erica - always OPPC

10 hours and 40 minutes until Game 4!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. Drive 4-5

    yankee21,

I have to agree with you. If CC wins tonight I’d rather have Gaudin pitch Game 5. Andy deserves credit for gutting it out somehow last night. But I think they’re pushing the envelope to ask him to go on 3 days rest now.

  32. Abdababdaserser

Murphydog, sorry to hear what you are going through with your dog. I can well appreciate the heartache that goes with that, dogs become a part of your family and it is never easy to see family suffer. Best of luck with all of that.

Phillies fans are complaining about the HR call just like Kruk. It doesn’t matter to them at all it was a set ground rule for the game.

Given the angle of the ball and where it looked like it hit the camera, I think it still would have gone out.

Alex had two games where he was defeated by the pitching, but he was just missing getting hits in the second game. Him getting hit by pitches starts becoming questionable when its twice in one game, especially when he had hit one out.

  33. 86w183

I’m more a lot more confident about winning tonight than I am about Lee falling off. No, he won’t be as good because it was probably the best game he has ever pitched, but he could still be very difficult to hit.

If they win I saw throw Gaudin out there and save AJ and then Andy if needed (or CC yet again). If the lose — perish the thought! — then you have to throw Burnett out there and take your best shot.

  34. jpb1973

    ——————————————————-

Exactly! It took the Yankees two years to stretch Joba out to 150 innings. They aren’t going to throw him back into the bullpen at this point…he is poised to be able to pitch 180-190 innings next year without any Joba Rules.

  35. murphydog

Thanks for all the good wishes. Off to the dog hospital to visit the pup, hopefully bringing her home for a nice steak and cheese dinner, although she’d probably skip the steak for the cheese. Companion animals are a part of the family – - the house is too quiet without them.

  36. yankee21

Andy certainly deserves credit. What a competitor.

We’ll see how Joe G plays it, but in my mind, he gets game 6 only if the Yankees come back to bronx having lost games 4-5.

The Yankees need to win game 4 at all costs to afford this luxury. The offense really needs to show up and smack Blanton around.

Most of all they need to shut Buck and McCarver up. What a partnership of idiocy this duo is.

  37. sab

    i don’t have to beat a dead horse…but i will..
since i don’t get YES network i was watching the Fox postgame report … so mccarver finally is saying something nice about the yankees (its not important what he said) and he turns to Joe F*** and asks “what do you think”…so this loser totally changes the subject and says “So what was your favorite costume for halloween?”

God took the wrong Buck to heaven…..

    sorry about your dog

i lost my dog almost 2 years ago at almost 12 yrs old
a black lab that slept with me for all 12 years every single day

a flap in his throat that should move to the side when he was breathing to allow air to travel was not moving making it hard for him to breath( laryngeal paralysis)

i called in sick to work & my boss said its only a dog

a long story short i went straight up into his office after i clocked into work after my dog passed & i almost lost my job

    he later appologized.

the first night after he passed i woke up in the middle of the night & reached for him & he was not there

i got up at 2 in the morning,20 below outside & walked around my block talking to myself for an hour because i couldnt breath myself

    anyways best of luck

Can someone answer this question for me? What is the rule concerning who is allowed to be on the bench during the post season? I see the Yankees have Wang, Nady, Cervelli, Pena on the bench but I don’t see Shelly Duncan, Miranda or other players from the 40 man roster. Can the Yankees put any player from their 40 man roster on the bench or does ML baseball only allow them a certain amount of players from their 40 man to be represented.

  42. Laura - "You should know I bleed Blue, but I ain't a Crip though"

“Most of all they need to shut Buck and McCarver up. What a partnership of idiocy this duo is.”

It’s clear that they are rooting for PHI. You can tell by the difference in their voices when PHI does something compared to when we do something. I would expect this from PHI announcers, not national broadcasters. If FOX wants to be fair and balanced (what a crock!), how about having Kay and Singleton do half the game?

  43. Erica - always OPPC

Hang in there murphydog. I am so sorry about your friend

  44. sab

BTW – if cc wins tonight – you sacrifice gaudin to Cliff Lee hoping for a miracle and you then have AJ in yankee stadium on full rest pitching where he is more comfortable – and where you have the DH back….so you won’t have a lineup of cano, melky, molina and aj batting…

up 3 games to 1 you have the luxury of getting your guys rest and not having molina AND aj batting and taking out posada and matsui out of the lineup for game 5…thats a no brainer if CC wins tonight

  45. upstate kate

    sab
I heard that as well…it had nothing to do w/ the conversation…it was as if he couldn’t say anything good about the Yankees win.

  46. Yankee Trader

Things I’d like to see tonight:

The Yankees not waiting to score runs or have to make a comeback. Score early and often without the solo homerun.

Cano, Melky and Teixeira, stop swinging at pitches in the dirt.

Philly pitchers stop drilling A-Rod. If you don’t want to pitch to him just walk him.

More stolen bases by the Yankees, which will lead to manufactured runs, that could be important, especially when facing Lee tomorrow.

Finally, hope that Buck and McCarver get so drunk before gametime that they have to be relieved of their duties by Fox!

  47. Laura - "You should know I bleed Blue, but I ain't a Crip though"

Those guys being on the bench has more to do with their role on the team this year rather than them being on the 40 man roster. They played during the regular season and contributed to the Yankees being in the WS. Duncan and Miranda were end of season call ups, who contributed little if anything to the AL pennant. I think that Girardi is just rewarding those guys by letting them be a part of the whole WS experience. Also, if someone gets hurt, Cervelli and Pena can be activated for play.

Buck and McCarver’s bias is very clear and ok with me. Can you imagine the flak that would be created if they were rooting for the Yankees? Their support is not needed. Besides it apears as if Tim is approaching senility, so it is surprising that he does not think he is watching the Cardinals.

I believe the Yankees can only keep “playoff eligible” players on the bench. To be playoff eligible a player must have been on the big league (25 man) roster by September 1st.

Shelly Duncan was on the 25 man roster for one day in July (in Chicago) so he could be on the bench, but Juan Miranda was not on the roster until mid September so he can’t be on the bench.

Erica – I know it wasn’t a triple, but did you happen to notice Andy’s game tying single last night?!?!?! ( I may or may not have done a victory lap around my friends couch last night in front of a bunch of people I don’t know, who now probably think I’m insane). Also, many thanks to your PBF for allowing me to watch Andy run the bases

I don’t want their support; I want their impartiality. They aren’t being paid to be PHI homers. They are being paid to announce the World Series.

I think I feel better about CC delivering well today than I will feel if he is going in game 7. That is a lot of starts on short rest.

I would love to see a Cliff Lee v. AJ Burnett matchup. I think that could be a very good game. Even more though, I would love to see the Yankee bats chase Lee from the game early. I know Lee is a competitor, but his smirking and attitude in game one really annoyed me. Nothing would be sweeter to me than seeing him get knocked down a few hundred pegs and being grilled on why he did so poorly against the Yankees the second time around.

To me, the best case for the Yankees to get number 27 is finishing it up in 5 games so it doesn’t hinge on pitching CC three games out of the seven.

If the Yankees can take a big lead early on, then CC can come out a little earlier so he won’t be as gassed for a potential game 7.

    ================================
Paid by Fox. Their job is not to be impartial, where did you get that? They have probably been instructed to lean a little towards the perceived underdog. In any case, you can bet that they have been coached and not given free rein to express themselves.

have to win tonight or last nights win is greatly diminished. When manuel named Blanton the game 4 starter he was banking on winning one of the first two games in philly with a fully rested c. lee going in game 5.

Now game 3 was the most likely one they would win but if we let the phillies win tonight then he still gets what he was hoping for..

  60. Abdababdaserser

I think Singleton calls a pretty unbiased game. Kay sometimes overly gushes over the opposition players.

They would provide a less biased announcing of the games than Buck and McCarver though. These aer supposed to be professionals, Buck and McCarver along with Kruk should be ashamed of their lack of professionalism. its unacceptable.

It seems the mediots are harping now on the camera being so far beyond the wall. I’ve seen countless replays now of that shot. The camera is beyond the wall, but its only by a couple of inches, not half a foot, 2 – 3 inches.

Look at the top of the railing. That is no wider than 3 inches. The camera is beyond the wall less than the width of that railing. Had that camera not been there it would have been out. Yes, a cheapy HR but a HR none the less.

How can these idiots keep saying it is controversial? Other than in the limited mind capacity of Kruk and Phillies fans, that is.

  65. randy l.

there is on mlb channel right now a replay of the 1969 world series between the mets and orioles.

mike cueller is pitching. mike may be the best pitcher i ever caught in the bullpen. the thing is he was 50 years old when he came by to throw some BP and visit some friends on the team.

i didn’t know who he was and after ten pitches , i stopped and said “who ARE you?” .

amazing screwball and other off speed pitches. but it was his command and spin on the screwball that stopped me. i had never seen a baseball spin like that.

he was also a very humble nice guy too.this is the first time i’ve seen video of him in his prime.

as doreen pointed out, listening to the announcers of this game is very nice on the ears. they actually give the scores and describe the action. i think having a professional announcer with no former player in the booth is a good thing. i think the announcers are lindsay nelson and curt gowdy.

shag crawford just threw out earl weaver- classic.

if i saw it correctly ,tom seaver just made a boneheaded play where he let a pop up bunt drop to get a double play and ended up only getting the bunter paul blair at first with the runners moving up.

interestingly enough the announcers didn’t say how dumb the move was. civility may have been taken a little to far, but listening to them is still music to my ears.

couldn’t a computer program take buck’s voice and turn into nelson’s and mcarver’s into gowdy’s?

  66. randy l.

yogi coaching first for the mets. this is fun to watch.

  67. 86w183

You guys are way too sensitive about TV commentators. First of all, no one is told to lean one way or the other on a national telecast. That’s just dumb. Secondly, the Fox guys were clearly supporting the HR call on “camera gate” while ESPN and others have made it out to be some sort of controversy.

What Fox wants most is a long series.

I like Singleton on color, but when he or Flaherty does play by play I stick sharp objects into my ears to make them feel better. I fail to understand how Yes cannot have a # 2 PXP guy and just leave analysts to analyze.

One other thing. Last night I was driving from 9:00 – 10:45 and listened to Captain Fraud and Georgie Girl. Wow! they basically gave up after the Phillies three run inning and after the Alex HR the Yanks were “back in the game”. How the hell are you out of the game down three in the fourth inning?
