Someone on here last night predicted 3 for 4 or 3 for 5 with a HR and at least 2 RBI.

While Nick did not have 3 hits or 2 RBI, he did have a HR and also accounted for 2 of the Yankee runs.

I predict CC shuts down the Phils tonight and we pop champagne on Philly’s field and celebrate #27

  3. Azaz November 1st, 2009 at 12:38 pm

arod his going to end up with 9 hr’s and break bonds record…you heard it here first. 2 tonite and 1 tomorrow on his way to WORLD SERIES MVP.

I watched game 3 of the ALCS at the Stadium and thoroughly enjoyed it, I’d definitley recommend going if you can!

When will people understand CR9 IS JIM PIR ONE. He is just in disguise.

  6. CR9 November 1st, 2009 at 12:39 pm

Since I do not know much about the Phillies, and the FOX announcers will only discuss how to bust Alex inside to try to get him out, does anybody know to get Werth out? Is there any way to pitch him to be more successful?

  7. Jeremy November 1st, 2009 at 12:40 pm

Yeah tonight really isn’t a must win for the Yankees. But you want to take this game so that the Yankees take full control of this series. Blanton should not win this game.

If the Yankees win this game then the World Series belongs to the Yankees.

  8. zmaster! November 1st, 2009 at 12:43 pm

is the game being played on the screen tomorrow night too. that would be something I would look forward to.

  9. Awais November 1st, 2009 at 12:45 pm

why did Mo not get a save last night???

  10. Andrew November 1st, 2009 at 12:46 pm

a lot of people are saying this isn’t a must win game, but trust me, winning in such a hostile environment as Philly is no easy feat, if we get two back-to-back wins here it will shut down the Phillies and their crowd for game 5, and then AJ can work his magic and take this Series.

AWAIS, this was mentioned on the previous post, but will post the entire rule so people will hopefully understand and not ask it again

    10.19 Saves For Relief Pitchers
A save is a statistic credited to a relief pitcher, as set forth in this Rule 10.19.
The official scorer shall credit a pitcher with a save when such pitcher meets all four of the following conditions:
    (a) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his team;
    (b) He is not the winning pitcher;
    (c) He is credited with at least a third of an inning pitched; and
    (d) He satisfies one of the following conditions:
    (1) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning;
    (2) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batters he faces); or
    (3) He pitches for at least three innings.

Since Mariano didnt pitch a full in, and the typing run wasn’t on base, at the plate, or on deck, it wasnt considered a save situation. Had he pitched 1 full inning, it would have been a save.

  12. Christina: Pictures from Game 6 and game 1 of the world series on the blog! November 1st, 2009 at 12:51 pm

tying = typing. I should probably type slower and read over my response before hitting submit.

  13. Doreen November 1st, 2009 at 12:51 pm

I like the idea if the Yankees win tonight, they start Gaudin against Lee. No doubt AJ could pitch a gem, but CC wasn’t chopped liver the other night and against any other pitcher but Lee, the Yankees had a chance in that game. Also, there is an off day, so even if Gaudin can only give 5 innings, you can use all the relief pitchers you need and still have the day of rest before game 6, if necessary.

If they beat Lee, great. But if they don’t at least they didn’t burn AJ and create the necessity of starting Andy on 3 days rest. I have doubt AJ can do the short rest thing; Andy may have to heart to do it, but physically, he may simply not be able to.

  14. yankee21 November 1st, 2009 at 12:53 pm

    Jeremy,

We know mathematically, this is not a must win game for either team tonight. However, this is a game the Yankees are expected to take, and the Phillies will play up the role as the so called “underdog”. Buck face and Timmy in their broadcast tonight will be comical as they tee this up as a must win for NY tonight…

IMO however, I believe the pressure is on the Yankees tonight to come through and the Phils tomorrow night to take their expected game.

If the Yankees win tonight, nobody needs to say what this means,, only 1 more to go for the prize…

However, if the Phillies beat NY tonight, it will be a huge mental lift knowing they beat the Yankee’s best and that they have their best going Mon night in Lee.

That being said, my prediction is NY over PHI 7-4.

  15. franmerrf November 1st, 2009 at 12:54 pm

Had to share a friend’s FB post. A quote from a church bulletin, “If God isn’t a Yankee fan then why did he make the sky blue and white?”. Awesome! Go Yanks!

  16. Jace123 November 1st, 2009 at 12:55 pm

However, it should be pointed out the the Yankee infield of today, which I dare to call, “The best damn infield of all time,” is store-bought.

  17. BFARBS November 1st, 2009 at 12:56 pm

Burnett will be starting. In an interview with Eiland on the radio yesterday, he was talking about how AJ had literally been begging joe to pitch on 3 days rest. in 5 career starts on short rest, Aj is 4-0, 2.33. He’s a warrior, and I don’t feel comfortable with Gaudin against Lee. Let AJ go and get em tomorrow

  18. Awais November 1st, 2009 at 12:57 pm

That was me with the Swisher prediction. This is just what happened in the regular season–Swish was benched for a day or two, then responded.

The final score was not that far off. I had it 8-3 and it was 8-5.

Tonight? Blanton is 0-4 against the Yankees with a 8.18 ERA. You do the math.

Sure, he may fool them with trying to pitch away from his scouting report for a few innings, but as they learned last night, the Phillies can only hide bad pitching for so long.

    My prediction: 7-2 Yankees.

  20. Betsy November 1st, 2009 at 1:01 pm

Randy, you’re right – that was a very defeatist attitude from Hamels, but then he hasn’t seemed right this post-season. He seems to be melting down….and I was not aware that he didn’t work as hard this off-season. Well, maybe 2009 was a slap in the face to him.

I respect the Phillies and I’m fine with their confidence, but the mediots were making it sound like they were the only team playing that was confident. The Yankees don’t need to wear it on their sleeves, they don’t need to make stupid predictions or have their manager insult the opposing players. David Lennon in Newsday wrote how the Yankees were carefree during their off-day, very relaxed with the media, while the Phils snapped and seemed high-strung. Verducci wrote on CNNSI.com about Howard’s reaction after the game last night -he basically told the media to get the **** away from him. He did come back afterwards, but still….. Talk about a team easy to hate.

  21. blake November 1st, 2009 at 1:02 pm

If the Yankees don’t win today then the momentum and advantage goes right back to Philly with lee going tommorow against either gaudin or a short rest aj. Philly was banking on a split of the first two games and we can’t let them have it in a game we should win.

  22. YanksinCA November 1st, 2009 at 1:02 pm

Flashpoints! Where is it? I can’t wait for game 4 already.

  23. BJK November 1st, 2009 at 1:03 pm

    A few thoughts:

    1. If Swisher has truly busted out of his slump, then woe to the Phillies. His bat makes the lineup relentless throughout and as we saw last night, can spark the rallies we’ve been missing instead of killing them.

    2. Is this finally the Damaso Marte we thought we acquired? He has gone from barely making the roster, to stealthily passing by Coke on the depth chart, to dominating the best hitters in the Phillies lineup. How bout a story, Sam, Chad and/or Josh?

    3. I love Posada, but he has looked silly several times this postseason. Countless mental mistakes, including swinging on 3-0 and popping up yesterday. Not being able to get the donut off his bat didn’t exactly help his image either.

  24. rconn23 November 1st, 2009 at 1:06 pm

    Enough with the Posada nonsense.

Apparently you missed the clutch RBI single he hit last night on what was a pretty good pitch. He didn’tlook so silly then.

This team is two wins away from a another title and Jorge Posada is a big reason why.

  25. Betsy November 1st, 2009 at 1:06 pm

Doreen, AJ has great #s on 3 days rest…..If the Yankees lose tonight, I have no qualms about sending him out there and he certainly seemse to relish the challenge. However, if they win, I would send Gaudin out…….not so much because Lee starts game 5, but because it’s always optimal to give a pitcher his full complement of rest. I understand the notion of not giving away any games, but starting Andy on short rest is absolutely the last resort.

  26. raymagnetic - And Now They Get CC November 1st, 2009 at 1:07 pm

” Countless mental mistakes, including swinging on 3-0 and popping up yesterday. Not being able to get the donut off his bat didn’t exactly help his image either.”

You realize that it’s usually the coaches decision when a player swings on 3-0 right?

You do also realize that usually a pitcher grooves one down the plate in that situation?

How does it make him look silly if he popped up the pitch?

I guess everytime a player hits into a pop up they look silly.

The anti-Posada crap needs to stop!

  27. PittsburghYankeeFan November 1st, 2009 at 1:12 pm

We should really stop nickpicking–the Yankees have put a really good team out there, and Joe G deserves props for putting his team in an excellent position to take 2 of the next 4.

Think of it: go .500 for the next four games, two of which are at home, and the Yankees take the WS.

The thing I am taking away from this postseason is that the team and Girardi are not playing it any differently than the regular season, with the exception being Joba in the BP.

Just grinding it out, day by day. Relentless.

One the other hand, you have the other team’s manager criticizing the Yankee stadium, the Yankee fans, the umps over a clear HR call, and the Yankee players. You have the shortstop giving arrogant prediction after arrogant prediction, and the 1B dissing the media.

One organization oozes class, and the other?

  28. BJK November 1st, 2009 at 1:12 pm

    Rconn-

I saw the game, and I saw his big rbi. I’m not calling for his benching or his banishment from the team.

Its not nonsense to point out a recurring issue. I still think Posada is one of the best catchers in the game, but I wonder where his head at more and more these days.

    Relax.

  29. Jeremy November 1st, 2009 at 1:16 pm

I think CC will have better command this time around. I think the extra rest had an effect on his command. And usually pitchers rebound with a better performance.

I can see Blanton getting removed by the 5th inning. The Philly bullpen will be in this game and if that happens advatage Yankees.

  30. the Truth Squad November 1st, 2009 at 1:16 pm

the Eagles are taking it to the Giants already-Philly fan should be satiated (and drunk) by the time the game is over and won’t mind the ass kicking they will get tonight. Baseball is a funny game and can be unpredictable but CC vs. Blanton is one of the biggest advantages a Yankees team could imagine considering Blanton’s lifetime ERA against the Yankees is 8.18.

  31. KF November 1st, 2009 at 1:17 pm

IMO this is just a classless way to pander to the type of fan base that supports their team.

  32. Jon RIngland November 1st, 2009 at 1:17 pm

    Rebecca,

You said you went to this gamewatch during the ALCS…what was it like? Were there a lot of people? How was the atmosphere? I’m going with my roomate tonight (I live in Philly and am tired of the lack of Yankee fans).

  33. BJK November 1st, 2009 at 1:18 pm

    Ray-

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Girardi let his veteran have the greenlight to swing away if he so choosed.

Its my opinion he should have chosen to take a strike. At 3-0, he has to get two great pitches, not just one. Take a strike and don’t let the pitcher off the hook. It wasn’t a great at-bat.

  34. Tom in N.J. November 1st, 2009 at 1:19 pm

“Not being able to get the donut off his bat didn’t exactly help his image either”

Absolutely. The fact that Posada had a base hit and 1 rbi yesterday means nothing. Nothing! However, the fact that his donut was stuck on his bat is what is truly important.

  35. Jeremy November 1st, 2009 at 1:22 pm

The Phillies were lucky last year to win it all. They faced a young Rays ballclub with no World Series experience, and they were just happy to be there. Rollins and the rest of the Phillies should be humble.

  36. Jimmy November 1st, 2009 at 1:23 pm

I’m not sure you can ever consider one of the 7 World Series games a throw away game.

  37. DW November 1st, 2009 at 1:25 pm

Murphydog – I’m a little late for the best wishes, but as a person who cried when leaving my dog overnight at the emergency vet earlier this year (she was fine) and who volunteers at the local animal shelter, my thoughts are for you and your dog.

  38. BJK November 1st, 2009 at 1:27 pm

Yes Tom. Thanks for pointing out the part where I said his rbi meant nothing.

    Oh wait. I didn’t.

I said the rbi was “huge” and referred to Posada as one of the best catchers in the game.

I simply pointed out that Posada has been making mental mistakes and I’m not used to seeing that from him. The donut comment was a half joking point that embellished the fact that he doesn’t look at ease recently.

Whatever, if you don’t want to have an intelligent conversation and just make generalized over the top statements, feel free.

  39. Jeremy November 1st, 2009 at 1:28 pm

sorry- I mean’t advantage Yankees, lol.

  40. Abdababdaserser November 1st, 2009 at 1:28 pm

Jeremy, the Rays were a good club last year, but they won a lot of games late with timely hitting. Once they were in the WS that just didn’t happen for them. Some may have been because of being in the WS, but it seems to me that some was just the leveling out that happens.

Plus, the Phillies pitching slowed down a number of key bats of the Rays.

This year the Phillies pitching is good, but has some troubles. The Yankees seem to have scouted the Phillies batters well and they are executing the pitching so far. The Phillies can come alive with the bats, but they have been a bit streaky this year.

  41. antisocial scrooge November 1st, 2009 at 1:30 pm

    D. McNabb passed to D. McNabb to the right for 1 yard gain

    what the heck?

  42. wally November 1st, 2009 at 1:32 pm

    ha, bad decision again joe

  43. yankee21 November 1st, 2009 at 1:35 pm

One of the things about today’s PRO athletes is when they talk a lot of smack, such as Rollins, but don’t get called on it when reality doesn’t back it up. We see this alot in the NFL with big-mouthed wide receivers but not so much in baseball, with the big exception being these damn Phillies.

Did not Rollins go public in predicting the PHILS 4-1 over the Yankees? He needs to be called on it. Did not Manuel show disrespect toward Andy before Game 3,, well his amazing team lost to Andy,, he needs to be called on it too.

What if Jeter or can you possibly imagine Arod being stupid enough to come out and predict NY in 5 and it didn’t happen? Imagine what FOX SPorts and ESPN would say? Arod would be crucified, at a minimum. Funny how Rollins semingly gets a pass.

Where are these mediots now? Bad question, we know where they are. They are in the tank.

The Yankees need to take this, not just for the old guard and the newbies and troopers like Matsui who gives it all despite running like my Mom, they need to win this thing to shut punks like Rollins and Victorino up while giving a collective you know what to the media in the tank.

  44. Laura - "You should know I bleed Blue, but I ain't a Crip though" November 1st, 2009 at 1:37 pm

If CC wins today, AJ should pitch tomorrow. You should put your opponents away when you have the chance.

  45. Jimmy November 1st, 2009 at 1:37 pm

Does anyone really care what Rollins says or thinks? Honestly…just a lot of hot air.

  46. Laura - "You should know I bleed Blue, but I ain't a Crip though" November 1st, 2009 at 1:40 pm

“Does anyone really care what Rollins says or thinks? Honestly…just a lot of hot air.”

Exactly. People know that he made himself look stupid. He’ll feel the sting after we whip their butts.

  47. ArodMVP217 November 1st, 2009 at 1:52 pm

win or lose, aj pitches game 5. he killed us on short rest with the bj’s. Gaudin may get a shot game six; andy was claimin he was a bit tired in the lower body

  48. Jeremy November 1st, 2009 at 1:53 pm

If you saw Rollins with the media yesterday you could tell that he has lost some confidence. He needs to realize that he is dealing with the Yankees not the Mets or any of those other weak NL teams.

  49. Jerry November 1st, 2009 at 1:58 pm

    When will you all learn?

Oct. 9: We will hit Nick Blackburn hard.
Oct. 11: We will hit Carl Pavano hard.
Oct. 17: We will hit Joe Saunders hard.
Oct. 28: We will hit Cliff Lee hard.

Remind me again how those pitchers did? Please?

Nov. 1: We will hit Joe Blanton hard.

    Please!

My prediction: Joe Blanton will go 7 and 2/3 innings, while giving up only 3 hits, and ZERO runs, with 8 strikeouts and ZERO walks.

I can just see it from a mile away. Are you all that blind?

  50. Tom in N.J. November 1st, 2009 at 2:08 pm

BJK, sorry I didn’t see your 2nd comment where you said that Posada’s rbi was huge-it must have been posted while I was typing. I just assumed you were another Posada hater. My mistake.

  51. Rob A from BBD November 1st, 2009 at 3:55 pm

I’m going to be there tonight. Can’t wait.

  53. Bo Knows November 1st, 2009 at 4:02 pm

Apparently Swisher is one of Long’s major projects, post season. For now it was just a band aid, ie closing his stance some and trying to eliminate some of those moving parts ala Alex. It would be heartening if he converts Swisher from “Bring in the clowns”. There was major improvement this year in his throwing so we could see a new and improved Swisher next year.

  54. john ricciardi November 2nd, 2009 at 4:49 pm

tonights game can you go to the stadium game 5?
