World Series Game 4: Yankees at Phillies (III)

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Nov 01, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

UPDATE, 11:20 p.m.: One mistake and Joba knew it. He bent over as soon as contact was made, and Feliz is a hero (at least for now). It’s tied at 4 with Brad Lidge coming in to try to keep it level. Here’s a thought: If Rivera hadn’t been needed for the last two outs last night, would Girardi have gone to him for two innings tonight?

the Phillies have used their top guns in the bullpen

Yanks will pull this one out

I still like Robertson, Hughes and Mariano over Lidge and Durbin

  5. Carl November 1st, 2009 at 11:24 pm

    we score this inning!

sucks for joba..he was pitching well and had to throw a strike on 3-2…offense needs to score more than 4 runs off the pitchers they faced today….its not over yet..

    That was awful

  12. Mehdi also in SF November 1st, 2009 at 11:24 pm

F***. I swear if they try to offload Joba in the off season I won’t shed a tear. Not one tear. I’ve felt this way for a long time. It’s just not tonight.

  13. Maaaaaarius November 1st, 2009 at 11:25 pm

Yeah, Joba needs to be trade bait. He doesn’t have the mental fortitude to be a Yankees pitcher. He keeps failing and it’s been a long time since we have seen anything good coming out of him. He is not a starter and he is not a depenable bridge to Mo.

  14. Russel November 1st, 2009 at 11:25 pm

  15. DW November 1st, 2009 at 11:25 pm

Grooving a 3-2 pitch. Joba has to know better than that.

  28. Gary November 1st, 2009 at 11:26 pm

The problem was he let it get to 3-2, then he feels like he has to throw a strike to not walk the guy.

We are in deep do do now

  29. SJ44 November 1st, 2009 at 11:26 pm

He’s been unreliable for months. Can’t be surprised.

He keeps using unreliable guys and gets burned with it everytime.

New series, their offense is dead and their pitching is on fumes.

    Not good.

  30. rconn23 November 1st, 2009 at 11:26 pm

The bats are to blame for this loss.

Lidge is unhittable again like he was last year.

    amazing.

  31. Yankee44 November 1st, 2009 at 11:26 pm

We better hope ‘regular season Lidge’ decides to show up.

  32. yankeenate November 1st, 2009 at 11:27 pm

So far the postseason script reads: Solid starting pitching; Spotty offense; suspect relief

  33. qiantom November 1st, 2009 at 11:27 pm

Looks like Girardi’s managing could be criticized of costing the Yankees another game.

  34. 100 pitches of fun... November 1st, 2009 at 11:27 pm

It will take 10 more innings for this offense to score a run

“Here comes brad lidge, we’ll see what happens.”

1-2-3 he’s due, and it’ll come down to our BP vs thiers.

  36. CB November 1st, 2009 at 11:27 pm

“why does joba have to throw so many breaking balls for ball to have to throw the fastball on 3-2 ?

    inexplicable.”

    Randy,
It’s truly amazing. Joba still thinks it’s 2007 and major league hitters have never seen him before.

He still thinks that slider is magic when in fact it’s yesterday’s news.

No one swings at it anymore. They just lay off it and let it tumble out of the zone.

But he loves that pitch and just won’t let it go.

He constantly overthinks on the mound and does so in such a predictable way that he bails out hitters again and again.

But he just isn’t learning out there.

  41. Orlando Chris November 1st, 2009 at 11:28 pm

Dear Joba – I’m not mad at you for giving up that jack up to Pedro Feliz. I’m just disappointed. You struck out the side with good stuff, you’re still working your way back into the Reliever Circle of Trust. Regards, Yankees Fan.

  42. BigSix November 1st, 2009 at 11:28 pm

Hard to see how this series doesn’t get tied up.

That blast this Philly team can pivot on.

It’s the kind of shot that swings momentum.

Need to snatch it back quick or we face Lee and a potential 2-3 going into Game 6.

    why is mccarver still employed?

  62. West Coat Fan November 1st, 2009 at 11:31 pm

We’re not going to win the WS with Mo as our only reliever. We need the other guys in the pen as well as our offense to show up. The only thing that has looked like the Yankee regular season has been the starting pitching. We need to play Yankee baseball. Good starting pitching, good hitting, and great relief pitching.

Let’s go Yankees. Grind one out here.

  63. Mehdi also in SF November 1st, 2009 at 11:31 pm

Whyt extra inning Jeremy, If we lose it’ll probably be in the bottom of the 9th. I see Hughes giving up a bomb.

  65. free baseball22a November 1st, 2009 at 11:31 pm

  66. Boston Dave - 2 wins til 27 November 1st, 2009 at 11:31 pm

he’s thrown about 9 sliders, 1 was in the strikezone

  67. CB November 1st, 2009 at 11:31 pm

Posada got a huge hit yesterday and once again delivers.

Wow. The offense is moribund all night. Then with two outs against Brad Lidge who has been throwing very well recently they completely turn it around.

What a huge hit by Alex.

But given Mariano’s work load that hit by Posada was enormous – it gives Mo a huge cushion to work with with the Phillies top of the order coming up.

  328. timo November 1st, 2009 at 11:45 pm

Interleague game this year between Phils and Blue Jays, Scutaro walked and just kept going all the way to second base because he had noticed Rollins and Utley were being lazy and not covering on walks.

Damon going to third reminded me of that. No reason for Phils not to see that possibility and plan to have someone cover.

Maybe it wouldn’t have made a difference but seemed to unnerve Lidge.

    ======

Yup – & let’s not forget just a thoroughly professional AB by Johnny Damon.

    Gopher,

He was getting himself out the first two games – he was just trying to do too much and swinging at bad pitches out of the zone.

That’s why he struck out so much those first two games.

The past two games he’s looked much better. That last swing he put on the ball was beautiful but even before that his at bats this game weren’t like what they were the first two games.

Alex keeps that swing short like that and he obliterates the scouting reports on him because he can’t be pitched to inside.

  346. Patrick November 1st, 2009 at 11:46 pm

  347. HenryfromDC November 1st, 2009 at 11:46 pm

To those wondering why Lidge didn’t get ejected after hitting Tex, you don’t automatically get ejected after a warning. It has to be intentional, and the ump decides that. No way that was intentional.

Johnny Damon – what a job!
I’m almost proud to be your proxy PBF for one night.

I’ll never tease you about ice skates ever again.

    Erica-

Must admit I didn’t take a shower before the top of the ninth, but after I washed my face and brushed my teeth, I turn it on and it’s 7-4 bottom of the 9th, Rivera cruises, and I find out with two out Damon sparked the rally!!!

    Yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  454. GreenBeret7 November 1st, 2009 at 11:52 pm

Damon had a great game and a greater pressure bat. Outstanding game by Damon and the rest of the team.

  455. Tom in N.J. November 1st, 2009 at 11:52 pm

Damon’s at-bat was the best at-bat of the series. Heck, his at-bat may just be the series.

  456. Betsy November 1st, 2009 at 11:52 pm

Devastating loss for Philly, but they have Lee going tomorrow.

CB, I may have missed your answer, but what are your thoughts about AJ tomorrow instead of Gaudin? I think it’s a mistake……

The bats are to blame for this loss.
Lidge is unhittable again like he was last year.
    amazing.
    ——————-
I see some things haven’t changed much during my absence and that’s a shame. This team deserves our faith.
I wonder if those who were complaining bout Posada earlier if they like his homeruns and 2-run doubles in the 9th inning.
Johnny Damon comes up with the heads up play of the night.

Hey Giuseppe! This one’s for you!

  458. Todd November 1st, 2009 at 11:52 pm

Yep, besides Damon, Arod came up huge, and Posada’s hit was huge too!!

  459. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing November 1st, 2009 at 11:53 pm

Erica’s (and by proxy, DT’s LOL) PB rocked. Seriously, warrior is an awesome description for him.

  460. RS November 1st, 2009 at 11:53 pm

“If the Yankees manage to finish off the Phillies, Johnny Damon is absolutely the Most Valuable Player.”

That was huge, but if Burnett beats Lee tomorrow I’d bet on him winning the MVP. When’s the last time a starting pitch outdueled 2 separate CY Young winners in the WS?

  461. jaybird November 1st, 2009 at 11:53 pm

A-Rod doesnt even get that chance had it not been for Damon.

  462. Josh from NC November 1st, 2009 at 11:54 pm

since ive really never experienced all the games in the 2001 WS, since i was 8 years old, this is probably the greatest game ive ever witnesses

  463. JeterJobaCanoFanForever, enough said November 1st, 2009 at 11:54 pm

Wow – you expert “guys” are mean tonight. That’s what ticks me off about you type of posters. You rain on everyone’s parade with your smugness.

Yeah, Joba gave up a HR but did Joe consider anyone else other than Joba for the 8th inning? How many relievers in that vaunted bullpen are there that he trusts Joba to bridge to Mo. You guys expect perfection. I would like to see each of you in that same position as Joba and see how well you would have done.

My take is that if you can’t be positive about the players and the team get the heck off the board. This wonderful team, warts and all, got to this WS without you. And they will win w/o you. RANT OVER

  464. DYNASTY IS DESTINY! November 1st, 2009 at 11:55 pm

    Damon, A-Rod, Posada

I love these postgame shows. Not for the highlights or press conferences, but because of those WB Mason commercials. Seeing John Flaherty immediately before a WB Mason commercial makes me think someone has to get flash to wear a fake mustache.

  468. Todd November 1st, 2009 at 11:56 pm

Just went back & watched Arod’s atbat again….man, he got his bat around so fast through the strike zone, a thing of beauty..

“He even ran into the 3rd out to get his buddy Mariano the save! ”

    nick in sf-

he just wanted to get right back in there and get it over with mo coming in .

… but one thing i’m pretty sure we are not going to see when he retires is a Jorge Posada School of Baserunning.

  472. PL November 1st, 2009 at 11:57 pm

very weird…the last 3 games have all been played in 3hrs and 25min

  473. jaybird November 1st, 2009 at 11:58 pm

Let’s be realistic, if we don’t score in that ninth who out there really thinks we have any chance tonight. With Lee looming in game 5, It really could have been lights out.

Guillen needs to shut his pie hole. He looks more and more foolish every time he talks.

  474. Michael T November 1st, 2009 at 11:58 pm

And the “One Dimensional” Yankees score 7 runs without a single HR.

  475. Bryan November 1st, 2009 at 11:58 pm

I think I threw out my should doing Joba fists pumps after A-Rods and Posadas hits
