World Series Game 4: Yankees at Phillies (III)

Sam Borden
November
1

UPDATE, 11:20 p.m.: One mistake and Joba knew it. He bent over as soon as contact was made, and Feliz is a hero (at least for now). It’s tied at 4 with Brad Lidge coming in to try to keep it level. Here’s a thought: If Rivera hadn’t been needed for the last two outs last night, would Girardi have gone to him for two innings tonight?

  1. will

    that sucked.

  2. nick

    joba is so bad

  3. v

    SUI!
    do it again!

  4. Boston Dave - 2 wins til 27

the Phillies have used their top guns in the bullpen

Yanks will pull this one out

I still like Robertson, Hughes and Mariano over Lidge and Durbin

  5. Carl

    we score this inning!

  6. Marco

    MAtsui!! Do it again baby!

  7. RalphieD (OPPC)

sucks for joba..he was pitching well and had to throw a strike on 3-2…offense needs to score more than 4 runs off the pitchers they faced today….its not over yet..

  8. JMK aka The Overshare

    That was awful

  9. eric

feels like game 4, 2003 all over again.

  10. Todd

that really, really made me feel ill

  11. Rudy

C’mon offense, come up big this inning.

  12. Mehdi also in SF

F***. I swear if they try to offload Joba in the off season I won’t shed a tear. Not one tear. I’ve felt this way for a long time. It’s just not tonight.

  13. Maaaaaarius

Yeah, Joba needs to be trade bait. He doesn’t have the mental fortitude to be a Yankees pitcher. He keeps failing and it’s been a long time since we have seen anything good coming out of him. He is not a starter and he is not a depenable bridge to Mo.

  14. Russel

    Is this guy Amish?

  15. DW

    Come on, Matsui…another HR please?

  16. Horace Clarke

well lets see if the big money boys can do something….

  17. sunny615

we deserve this if all we can do is score 4 off the pathetic Blanton.

  18. PL

hey great strategy lets take every freakin fastball down the middle tonight

  19. rocky balboa

someone take the keys from joba

  20. Mac Daddy

two pitches, both with 2 strikes changed this game…crazy

  21. rconn23

Pretty much have to score this inning or the game is over.

  22. PL

whatever momentum we had in this series is officially gone

  23. 100 pitches of fun...

Matsui takes a pitch then swings at garbage.

    =========

Could all come back with one swing.

  26. Doris from Rego Park

you can literally hear the joy in Buck’s voice

  27. 100 pitches of fun...

Grooving a 3-2 pitch. Joba has to know better than that.

  28. Gary

The problem was he let it get to 3-2, then he feels like he has to throw a strike to not walk the guy.

We are in deep do do now

  29. SJ44

He’s been unreliable for months. Can’t be surprised.

He keeps using unreliable guys and gets burned with it everytime.

New series, their offense is dead and their pitching is on fumes.

    Not good.

  30. rconn23

The bats are to blame for this loss.

Lidge is unhittable again like he was last year.

    amazing.

  31. Yankee44

We better hope ‘regular season Lidge’ decides to show up.

  32. yankeenate

So far the postseason script reads: Solid starting pitching; Spotty offense; suspect relief

  33. qiantom

Looks like Girardi’s managing could be criticized of costing the Yankees another game.

  34. 100 pitches of fun...

It will take 10 more innings for this offense to score a run

  35. Brandon AWESOME! (BECAUSE In New York! This song isn't what dreams are made of!)

“Here comes brad lidge, we’ll see what happens.”

1-2-3 he’s due, and it’ll come down to our BP vs thiers.

  36. CB

“why does joba have to throw so many breaking balls for ball to have to throw the fastball on 3-2 ?

    inexplicable.”

    Randy,
It’s truly amazing. Joba still thinks it’s 2007 and major league hitters have never seen him before.

He still thinks that slider is magic when in fact it’s yesterday’s news.

No one swings at it anymore. They just lay off it and let it tumble out of the zone.

But he loves that pitch and just won’t let it go.

He constantly overthinks on the mound and does so in such a predictable way that he bails out hitters again and again.

But he just isn’t learning out there.

    nope

  38. jaybird

A lot of things stacked against us right now in winning this game. With Lee looming tomorrow on full rest it is do or die for this team.

  39. Brandon AWESOME! (BECAUSE In New York! This song isn't what dreams are made of!)

“Looks like Girardi’s managing could be criticized of costing the Yankees another game.”

    Explain.

  40. Scared of the Wall

At least we have Robertson for extras… god forbid he pitches the 7th or 8th….

  41. Orlando Chris

Dear Joba – I’m not mad at you for giving up that jack up to Pedro Feliz. I’m just disappointed. You struck out the side with good stuff, you’re still working your way back into the Reliever Circle of Trust. Regards, Yankees Fan.

  42. BigSix

Hard to see how this series doesn’t get tied up.

That blast this Philly team can pivot on.

It’s the kind of shot that swings momentum.

Need to snatch it back quick or we face Lee and a potential 2-3 going into Game 6.

  43. NYY626

This is the third time in 2 days that when I’ve gone over to a new thread its been on 27 comments.

  44. Nick in SF

My bad, I didn’t make an “I’ll go get ramen if Matsui homers” promise.

    Sorry.

  45. free baseball22a

nice work swinging at ball 4

  46. eric

ball 4– eveyones trying to hit one out.

  47. Yanks_Fan

    Horrible Captain!

  48. Rishi

    this sucks

  49. PL

Joba really managed to ruin the season…i usually dont say dumb things like this but im venting

  50. 100 pitches of fun...

Swinging at the dirt again. Why am I not surprised. The offense is absolutely brutal.

  51. Boston Dave - 2 wins til 27

take one for the team Johnny!

  52. Todd

Philly fans are bigger jerks than Red Sox fans

  53. Dan

Phil Coke? Please just bring in Rivera.

  54. Jeremy

Just a pathetic effort. Lidge is going to have a clean inning. And a extra inning loss is on the way.

  55. Brandon AWESOME! (BECAUSE In New York! This song isn't what dreams are made of!)

    Coke/Hughes pitching the 9th, pray.

  56. Boston Dave - 2 wins til 27

Lidge has landed one slider in the strikezone

sit fastball, lay off the slider

    period.

  57. free baseball22a

damon isn’t getting a hit, this guy throws trash that’s in the dirt

  58. Mac Daddy

stop swinging at his crap!! he would of walked all 3 of you

  59. Horace Clarke

and here comes a swing and a miss on a pitch in the dirt>

  60. Scared of the Wall

McCarver is drunk…. send Chamberlain back out there? Not only is that a bad idea, but Matsui has already bat for him…

  61. dionne sanders

    why is mccarver still employed?

  62. West Coat Fan

We’re not going to win the WS with Mo as our only reliever. We need the other guys in the pen as well as our offense to show up. The only thing that has looked like the Yankee regular season has been the starting pitching. We need to play Yankee baseball. Good starting pitching, good hitting, and great relief pitching.

Let’s go Yankees. Grind one out here.

  63. Mehdi also in SF

Whyt extra inning Jeremy, If we lose it’ll probably be in the bottom of the 9th. I see Hughes giving up a bomb.

  64. jaybird

Choke coming in to pitch the bottom of the ninth? I hate to be a pessimist but I smell a walk off.

  65. free baseball22a

this is another one of those games, where girardi brings in the scrubs and just hopes for the best in extras

  66. Boston Dave - 2 wins til 27

he’s thrown about 9 sliders, 1 was in the strikezone

  67. CB

They can not throw Phil Coke in this inning. They should throw Mariano.

  68. Mac Daddy

has he thrown 3 strikes this inning?? stop swinging at this garbage

  69. Mark-Cant Touch This

Feliz is a big game hitter he did the same thing last year, Joba got too cute with his sliders that is what did him in, if it wasn’t a 3-2 count no way would Feliz have a swing like that, on that fastball, he was waiting for it

  70. DT - OPPC member

Damon will walk. Tex will go deep.

  71. Boston Dave - 2 wins til 27

    3-2

slider in the dirt coming right up\\

  72. SJ44

Joba has been awful for months.

Unfortunately, he is being put in these situations to fail.

No offense, 2 reliable bullpen arms and starters who are on fumes.

Tough to win 2 more games with those issues.

  73. Triple Short Of A Cycle

Feliz is a big game hitter? That’s a joke right?

  74. v

    surprise me JD…

  75. Boston Dave - 2 wins til 27

    wow, fooled me

    let’s go Damon!

  76. rocky balboa

yes, philly fans make the bleacher creatures look like altar boys

  77. Betsy

This could be a truly devastating loss……The Yankees did nothing against Blanton……..

  78. West Coat Fan

we’ve made some mediocre pitching look good tonight….

  79. PL

    seriously Pedro Feliz tho

  80. 100 pitches of fun...

If they couldn’t hit Blanton how are they going ot hit Lee?

  81. West Coat Fan

  82. Boston Dave - 2 wins til 27

Interleague game this year between Phils and Blue Jays, Scutaro walked and just kept going all the way to second base because he had noticed Rollins and Utley were being lazy and not covering on walks.

    Gopher,

He was getting himself out the first two games – he was just trying to do too much and swinging at bad pitches out of the zone.

That’s why he struck out so much those first two games.

The past two games he’s looked much better. That last swing he put on the ball was beautiful but even before that his at bats this game weren’t like what they were the first two games.

Alex keeps that swing short like that and he obliterates the scouting reports on him because he can’t be pitched to inside.

johnny rocket just earned himself a new contract with the yankees
it will be stupid to not sign him!
he became a true yankee legend today

    Yanks win!

    Imback and Mac Daddy lose!

  437. Yanks_Fan

If two people deserve pie its Damon for that epic at-bat and great base running, and A-Rod for overcoming his struggles to hit probably the biggest hit of his career so far.

    Amazing win! 3-1, baby!

  438. Erica - always OPPC

I said it in the pregame-

Damon is a Demon tonight !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  439. tex's friend

the 2009 Yanks are the Comeback Kids after all

they wait until the 9th to do the real damage

Seeing other closers work this postseason it just brings even more into focus how great Mariano is. He’s just unreal..

  446. jaybird

I better not hear any more stupid predictions from Rollins.

  447. michelle b. - Doing the Monster Mash Waiting for Arod to Follow!

    Johnny the Stuttering hero.

  448. Paul

The Yankees have killed the closer for all three teams they’ve faced in the postseason.

    God bless you Mariano Rivera!

  449. tex's friend

Oh yeah, I will take Hamels’ ownage of Sabathia for Arod’s ownage of Lidge.

Johnny Damon – what a job!
I’m almost proud to be your proxy PBF for one night.

I’ll never tease you about ice skates ever again.
    *****

    YAY!!!!!!

I am the happiest girl in new York right now. Now I know how Kate Hudson feels

  453. Yankee Trader

    Erica-

Must admit I didn’t take a shower before the top of the ninth, but after I washed my face and brushed my teeth, I turn it on and it’s 7-4 bottom of the 9th, Rivera cruises, and I find out with two out Damon sparked the rally!!!

    Yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  454. GreenBeret7

Damon had a great game and a greater pressure bat. Outstanding game by Damon and the rest of the team.

  455. Tom in N.J.

Damon’s at-bat was the best at-bat of the series. Heck, his at-bat may just be the series.

  456. Betsy

Devastating loss for Philly, but they have Lee going tomorrow.

CB, I may have missed your answer, but what are your thoughts about AJ tomorrow instead of Gaudin? I think it’s a mistake……

The bats are to blame for this loss.
Lidge is unhittable again like he was last year.
    amazing.
    ——————-
I see some things haven’t changed much during my absence and that’s a shame. This team deserves our faith.
I wonder if those who were complaining bout Posada earlier if they like his homeruns and 2-run doubles in the 9th inning.
Johnny Damon comes up with the heads up play of the night.
    ====
Hey Giuseppe! This one’s for you!

  458. Todd

Yep, besides Damon, Arod came up huge, and Posada’s hit was huge too!!

  459. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

Erica’s (and by proxy, DT’s LOL) PB rocked. Seriously, warrior is an awesome description for him.

  460. RS

“If the Yankees manage to finish off the Phillies, Johnny Damon is absolutely the Most Valuable Player.”

That was huge, but if Burnett beats Lee tomorrow I’d bet on him winning the MVP. When’s the last time a starting pitch outdueled 2 separate CY Young winners in the WS?

  461. jaybird

A-Rod doesnt even get that chance had it not been for Damon.

  462. Josh from NC

since ive really never experienced all the games in the 2001 WS, since i was 8 years old, this is probably the greatest game ive ever witnesses

  463. JeterJobaCanoFanForever, enough said

Wow – you expert “guys” are mean tonight. That’s what ticks me off about you type of posters. You rain on everyone’s parade with your smugness.

Yeah, Joba gave up a HR but did Joe consider anyone else other than Joba for the 8th inning? How many relievers in that vaunted bullpen are there that he trusts Joba to bridge to Mo. You guys expect perfection. I would like to see each of you in that same position as Joba and see how well you would have done.

My take is that if you can’t be positive about the players and the team get the heck off the board. This wonderful team, warts and all, got to this WS without you. And they will win w/o you. RANT OVER

  464. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

    Lidge getting lit up

    Damon, A-Rod, Posada

    Philly Mo frantic!!!!!

  465. JZ

    Nice all, Erica!!

  467. Marc

I love these postgame shows. Not for the highlights or press conferences, but because of those WB Mason commercials. Seeing John Flaherty immediately before a WB Mason commercial makes me think someone has to get flash to wear a fake mustache.

  468. Todd

Just went back & watched Arod’s atbat again….man, he got his bat around so fast through the strike zone, a thing of beauty..

TEN WINS DOWN – ONE TO GO !!!

  470. RS

I love how YES just skips over all the times the Phillies scored :)

  471. randy l.

“He even ran into the 3rd out to get his buddy Mariano the save! ”

    nick in sf-

he just wanted to get right back in there and get it over with mo coming in .

… but one thing i’m pretty sure we are not going to see when he retires is a Jorge Posada School of Baserunning.

  472. PL

very weird…the last 3 games have all been played in 3hrs and 25min

  473. jaybird

Let’s be realistic, if we don’t score in that ninth who out there really thinks we have any chance tonight. With Lee looming in game 5, It really could have been lights out.

Guillen needs to shut his pie hole. He looks more and more foolish every time he talks.

  474. Michael T

And the “One Dimensional” Yankees score 7 runs without a single HR.

  475. Bryan

I think I threw out my should doing Joba fists pumps after A-Rods and Posadas hits

  476. YankeeKid

Charlie Manuel is a cranky old man

  477. Bryan

    Kruk start crying tool bag

  478. Yankee Trader

Finally saw the replay of Damon’s steal and outrunning Feliz to 3rd. never have seen that play in all my long Yankee years of watching them!

  479. JasonR

John Kruk sounds like someone dropped a brick on his dog’s head.

    Yankees! Good lucky!
