World Series Game 4: Yankees at Phillies (III)
-

- November
- 1
UPDATE, 11:20 p.m.: One mistake and Joba knew it. He bent over as soon as contact was made, and Feliz is a hero (at least for now). It’s tied at 4 with Brad Lidge coming in to try to keep it level. Here’s a thought: If Rivera hadn’t been needed for the last two outs last night, would Girardi have gone to him for two innings tonight?

that sucked.
joba is so bad
SUI!
do it again!
the Phillies have used their top guns in the bullpen
Yanks will pull this one out
I still like Robertson, Hughes and Mariano over Lidge and Durbin
we score this inning!
MAtsui!! Do it again baby!
sucks for joba..he was pitching well and had to throw a strike on 3-2…offense needs to score more than 4 runs off the pitchers they faced today….its not over yet..
That was awful
feels like game 4, 2003 all over again.
that really, really made me feel ill
C’mon offense, come up big this inning.
F***. I swear if they try to offload Joba in the off season I won’t shed a tear. Not one tear. I’ve felt this way for a long time. It’s just not tonight.
Yeah, Joba needs to be trade bait. He doesn’t have the mental fortitude to be a Yankees pitcher. He keeps failing and it’s been a long time since we have seen anything good coming out of him. He is not a starter and he is not a depenable bridge to Mo.
Is this guy Amish?
Come on, Matsui…another HR please?
well lets see if the big money boys can do something….
we deserve this if all we can do is score 4 off the pathetic Blanton.
hey great strategy lets take every freakin fastball down the middle tonight
someone take the keys from joba
two pitches, both with 2 strikes changed this game…crazy
Pretty much have to score this inning or the game is over.
whatever momentum we had in this series is officially gone
Matsui takes a pitch then swings at garbage.
Jeter show us why you have the nickname Mr Nov.

Could all come back with one swing.
you can literally hear the joy in Buck’s voice
Grooving a 3-2 pitch. Joba has to know better than that.
The problem was he let it get to 3-2, then he feels like he has to throw a strike to not walk the guy.
We are in deep do do now
He’s been unreliable for months. Can’t be surprised.
He keeps using unreliable guys and gets burned with it everytime.
New series, their offense is dead and their pitching is on fumes.
Not good.
The bats are to blame for this loss.
Lidge is unhittable again like he was last year.
amazing.
We better hope ‘regular season Lidge’ decides to show up.
So far the postseason script reads: Solid starting pitching; Spotty offense; suspect relief
Looks like Girardi’s managing could be criticized of costing the Yankees another game.
It will take 10 more innings for this offense to score a run
“Here comes brad lidge, we’ll see what happens.”
1-2-3 he’s due, and it’ll come down to our BP vs thiers.
“why does joba have to throw so many breaking balls for ball to have to throw the fastball on 3-2 ?
inexplicable.”
Randy,
It’s truly amazing. Joba still thinks it’s 2007 and major league hitters have never seen him before.
He still thinks that slider is magic when in fact it’s yesterday’s news.
No one swings at it anymore. They just lay off it and let it tumble out of the zone.
But he loves that pitch and just won’t let it go.
He constantly overthinks on the mound and does so in such a predictable way that he bails out hitters again and again.
But he just isn’t learning out there.

Could all come back with one swing.
nope
A lot of things stacked against us right now in winning this game. With Lee looming tomorrow on full rest it is do or die for this team.
“Looks like Girardi’s managing could be criticized of costing the Yankees another game.”
Explain.
At least we have Robertson for extras… god forbid he pitches the 7th or 8th….
Dear Joba – I’m not mad at you for giving up that jack up to Pedro Feliz. I’m just disappointed. You struck out the side with good stuff, you’re still working your way back into the Reliever Circle of Trust. Regards, Yankees Fan.
Hard to see how this series doesn’t get tied up.
That blast this Philly team can pivot on.
It’s the kind of shot that swings momentum.
Need to snatch it back quick or we face Lee and a potential 2-3 going into Game 6.
This is the third time in 2 days that when I’ve gone over to a new thread its been on 27 comments.
My bad, I didn’t make an “I’ll go get ramen if Matsui homers” promise.
Sorry.
nice work swinging at ball 4
ball 4– eveyones trying to hit one out.
Horrible Captain!
this sucks
Joba really managed to ruin the season…i usually dont say dumb things like this but im venting
Swinging at the dirt again. Why am I not surprised. The offense is absolutely brutal.
take one for the team Johnny!
Philly fans are bigger jerks than Red Sox fans
Phil Coke? Please just bring in Rivera.
Just a pathetic effort. Lidge is going to have a clean inning. And a extra inning loss is on the way.
Coke/Hughes pitching the 9th, pray.
Lidge has landed one slider in the strikezone
sit fastball, lay off the slider
period.
damon isn’t getting a hit, this guy throws trash that’s in the dirt
stop swinging at his crap!! he would of walked all 3 of you
and here comes a swing and a miss on a pitch in the dirt>
McCarver is drunk…. send Chamberlain back out there? Not only is that a bad idea, but Matsui has already bat for him…
why is mccarver still employed?
We’re not going to win the WS with Mo as our only reliever. We need the other guys in the pen as well as our offense to show up. The only thing that has looked like the Yankee regular season has been the starting pitching. We need to play Yankee baseball. Good starting pitching, good hitting, and great relief pitching.
Let’s go Yankees. Grind one out here.
Whyt extra inning Jeremy, If we lose it’ll probably be in the bottom of the 9th. I see Hughes giving up a bomb.
Choke coming in to pitch the bottom of the ninth? I hate to be a pessimist but I smell a walk off.
this is another one of those games, where girardi brings in the scrubs and just hopes for the best in extras
he’s thrown about 9 sliders, 1 was in the strikezone
They can not throw Phil Coke in this inning. They should throw Mariano.
has he thrown 3 strikes this inning?? stop swinging at this garbage
Feliz is a big game hitter he did the same thing last year, Joba got too cute with his sliders that is what did him in, if it wasn’t a 3-2 count no way would Feliz have a swing like that, on that fastball, he was waiting for it
Damon will walk. Tex will go deep.
3-2
slider in the dirt coming right up\\
Joba has been awful for months.
Unfortunately, he is being put in these situations to fail.
No offense, 2 reliable bullpen arms and starters who are on fumes.
Tough to win 2 more games with those issues.
Feliz is a big game hitter? That’s a joke right?
surprise me JD…
wow, fooled me
let’s go Damon!
yes, philly fans make the bleacher creatures look like altar boys
This could be a truly devastating loss……The Yankees did nothing against Blanton……..
we’ve made some mediocre pitching look good tonight….
seriously Pedro Feliz tho
If they couldn’t hit Blanton how are they going ot hit Lee?
with the help of the umpires
please Johnny
please
Here comes the slider in the dirt…
Bruney is warming up?
ok, Phillies win in the bottom of 9
Lidge is at 20 pitches
COME ON TEX

Funny how SJ44 shows up when they blow a lead. Don’t you have a nephew to pimp
Tex, if there’s ever a time you need another big hit…it’s now.
STEAL 2ND OR ELSE
Great AB by Damon…
Let’s see if Tex can come through here…
Great at-bat by Damon.
Tex, please earn your GD paycheck.
Biggest at bat of your life Tex. Please Lord.
At least Damon tried. The rest of these guys are doing nothing.
Tex start earning your paycheck now…
Tex needs to get a big hit here. Either a double in the gap or a HR.
Tex if you dont get hit here…u will get traded for Jose Contrares
Tex is going to see nothing but sliders…
MPB Johnny Damon = Awesome
hell of an AB
Please, Teixeira!
If your Johnny try to take 2B here, you need to shake Lidge up and throw him off rythmn
Lidge’s stuff is so-so, but enough to deal with Yanks’ offense.
Tex weak fly out
I love JD!!!!
Awesome baserunning by Damon!!
WOW! DOUBLE STEAL!
We need Teix…more than ever. He’s gone cold, but can make up for that right now.
And WOW…heads up play by Damon.
wow i was like Damon what you doing..lol
WHAT A HEADS UP PLAY
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And this is why Johnny Damon is stellar!!!!
Good job Johnny!
Heads up base running by Damon…
Tex just needs a single here…
Tex please get a hit….
Haha, the shift bites the Phillies.
Time for Tex to be Tex and Lidge to be Lidge.
And how about that heads up baserunning from Damon!
Triple Short Of A Cycle November 1st, 2009 at 11:32 pm
Feliz is a big game hitter? That’s a joke right?
_____
No not a joke look at his playoffs last year all the big hits he has had before you speak, he is one of those mediocre hitters that rise up in pressure situations
that’s big.
Now Lidge has to be careful of throwing one in the dirt.
see Posada, that’s good baserunning.
Learn something from JD!
Boston Dave – 2 wins til 27

Hands off!
The heart of the lineup has to show up NOW!!!
wow , gutsy move on damon
Johnny Drama does it again.
Means nothing unless tex can cash it in
Tex be a hero!!!!
C’mon Tex, just a grounder through the infield…
Dammit I had hopes here, but w/ Damon on 3B it’s too good to be true.
Incredibly terrific play by Damon.
can tex do it…
Lidge is now going to have to cautious throwing that slider now.
Huge play by damon.
*crosses fingers*
Look fastball…
Arod time.
Two hit batters.
oh my goodness…it comes down to AROD…holy moly…
AROD TIME
And it comes down to A-Rod…. as it always does….
c’mon AROD be the hero
doesnt it always come down to alex?????
Please lord help Alex. Biggest at bat of his career also.
HE HIT HIM, LIDGE SHOULD BE EJECTED!
It’s up to ARod now…Time to be a hero again…

AROD ARE YOU KIDDING ME>>>SO LIDGE SHUD BE TOSSED
Somebody better get hit tomorrow on the Phillies…
Way too good to be true now. Al vs Lidge.
Please, please, please Arod, be the hero again.
just a hit….
ARod will be the Pujols/kryptonite to Lidge
hanging slider going deep!
cmon Alex!!!
Just need a base hit.
Arod’s chance at MVP
Throw him out!!
No, leave him in.
Please arod!!!!!!!!!!
what’s the point of warnings if guys can still get hit?
I like how they yipped and yapped about if it was a home run or not last night, but since that inning not one mention of Howard not touching the base. should be 4-3 now.
IT”S A_ROD TIME!!!
Just one hit A-Rod and you earn all $275 million. JUST ONE HIT!
It’s never intentional
Drats! Way to take the bat out of Tex’s hand.
(I’m not complaining, but I am.)
I can’t remember feeling this tense in quite a while.
If this is World Series fun, screw it, let’s do it every year!
Oh God.
It’s always on Arod.
I swear I’ll watch Raising Helen!
That was amazing.
A-Rod has something up his sleeve…
two stolen bases on one play.
very cool.
at his ankles…
Please, please.
man…he lets good pitches go
we’re stranding them.

Where can I get a picture of A-Rod as a centaur?
huh mccarver?!
rcon23 and sj44 – TAKE A SIT YOU CHICKEN LITTLE PANSIES…
My heart leapt into my mouth when A-Rod got the hit.
Just amazing. And once again a pitcher attempts to pitch Alex by the book – tries to come inside on him and Alex stays very short to the ball with that new swing of his and belts the pitch.
tk LOL!!!!!!!!!!! good one!!
where’s all those white hankies go?
someone give one to bucky boy.

Uck, 8 more years of this guy with his HR’s, Defense and Clutchness? And without the pressure of never having won a WS?

Wow, was that unbelievably huge!…….
Kudos a million times over to Alex who isn’t letting bad at bats get to him………wow, has he been clutch. Amazing – the offense could look so bad and then turn on a dime, with 2 outs!
Did Jorge just want to end the game and get back on defense?
This is not 2004.
This is not 2003.
This is 2009. Enjoy it people!!!
anyone else having an epic meltdown right now? In a good way I mean….
CB, why do you think A-Rod has had a more difficult time in the WS, just two hits, albeit huge hits
Thats Yankee Baseball.
Let’s go MO!
btw – all that with 2 outs…
Posada got a huge hit yesterday and once again delivers.
Wow. The offense is moribund all night. Then with two outs against Brad Lidge who has been throwing very well recently they completely turn it around.
What a huge hit by Alex.
But given Mariano’s work load that hit by Posada was enormous – it gives Mo a huge cushion to work with with the Phillies top of the order coming up.
fantastic rally … lot of fun this team …

Johnny Damon earned another 2 years guaranteed with the two stolen bases on one pitch. I don’t care if he hits .200 next year and can no longer throw to third without a cutoff man.
It’s not over yet……….it’s not over yet. We still need to get 3 outs……go Mo!
Let’s go Mo!
Joba is in line for the win.
What a vulture.
that was nice to see from jorge…
If Mo saves this game, A-Rod has/had a big hand in winning two games.

all kidding aside, there’s no need to say that because posada and molina are teammates and the yankees need both.
let’s just cheer posada because he’s good – real good!!!!!
How about that Mo versus Lidge debate at the beginning of the World Series.
—————————–
between m0rons?
wow, Joba would get the win….Do you think baseball needs to change that rule????
He even ran into the 3rd out to get his buddy Mariano the save!
Lidge must have sold his sole to the devil for the amazing 2008 season. “Look, you give me one perfect season with a WS championship and you can make me suck forevermore”
Phillies bus driver pitching in as a pinch-hitter.
I love Jorge Posada — to all the people who ragged on him all night, please take a deep breath and appreciate what we’ve got. He’s a winner.
Hughes should be warming up.
3 outs to go for a 3-1 lead…let’s go mariano…
“Kudos a million times over to Alex who isn’t letting bad at bats get to him”
And Damon for putting on a tough AB. Keeping the inning alive.
Play Molina!!!! This Posada character can’t hit.
HA
*Phillies’
leads large enough for aceves…hehehe
Like Brad Lidge over troubled water…..
I can’t get on Posada too much because he did get a 2 RBI hit but why does he always get thrown out at second on those kinda plays…
Interleague game this year between Phils and Blue Jays, Scutaro walked and just kept going all the way to second base because he had noticed Rollins and Utley were being lazy and not covering on walks.
Damon going to third reminded me of that. No reason for Phils not to see that possibility and plan to have someone cover.
Maybe it wouldn’t have made a difference but seemed to unnerve Lidge.

works for me. I’ll let you know when it happens!
Gopher,
He was getting himself out the first two games – he was just trying to do too much and swinging at bad pitches out of the zone.
That’s why he struck out so much those first two games.
The past two games he’s looked much better. That last swing he put on the ball was beautiful but even before that his at bats this game weren’t like what they were the first two games.
Alex keeps that swing short like that and he obliterates the scouting reports on him because he can’t be pitched to inside.
Quick Sam, edit that story to include the A-rod heroics
To those wondering why Lidge didn’t get ejected after hitting Tex, you don’t automatically get ejected after a warning. It has to be intentional, and the ump decides that. No way that was intentional.
Mo looks pretty relaxed out there
1 more Mo!

mariano is a machine – if we win this series, mariano is the MVP – no questions…
Let’s so how much good those “looks” that Rollins said they got at Rivera the other night do them this inning.
I’m still very encouraged by what I saw from Joba tonight. He screwed around with 2 sliders and ran it full and then he knew the fastball was coming. Lucky…
Arod is unreal this postseason
Hey Jimmy, you still can’t hit Mo…
Betsy,
Yes – since that mix up with the other poster this has been me.
There once was a man named Brad.
Who made fans in Philly very sad.
He tried to pitch.
But the Yanks said, “Take that B**ch”
And in the end no win was to be had.
I AM SO HAPPY I DONT CARE IF I FAIL MY EXAM 2morrow…who needs to know compound interest anyway
Rollins next prediction: Phillies in 7.
I don’t hear anything from those Philly fans.

It’s a disgrace that Joba would get a win here.
***************************
That happens in a team game. They picked him up. All that matter is the win.
someone should point out to charlie manuel that HIS fans are leaving before the end of the game.
didnt he criticize yankee fans in game 1 for that?
Joba with the win!
THANK YOU BRAD LIDGE
YOU SOLD YOUR SOUL TO THE DEVIL AND NOW ITS IS PAYING OFF
phillies get damonized !!!!!!!!!!!
what a game.
Damon was awesome in his last AB..That was the game right there…
Mo’s past two nights. Five outs. 13 pitches. A friggin Cyborg.
I just needed to pop on to say –
Erica’s PF = AWESOME
One more note: Mo threw 8 pitches. Nice!!!
Like he was woofin, JRo has figured Mo out.
I don’t know why Mo’s pitches are unhitable but I’m pretty sure I couldn’t hit him.
Great win
One more.
and Mo went only 8 pitches…sweet
Awesome!!!
NYY does what they needed to do….take at least two games on the road. Rivera with 13 pitches in 1.2 innings in the last two games.
listen to pained/hushed tone of joe buck

The bats are to blame for this loss.
Lidge is unhittable again like he was last year.
amazing.
——————-
I see some things haven’t changed much during my absence and that’s a shame. This team deserves our faith.
I wonder if those who were complaining bout Posada earlier if they like his homeruns and 2-run doubles in the 9th inning.
Johnny Damon comes up with the heads up play of the night.
I will be at the game tomorrow….
Yanks better get it done!
That was THE best game I’ve seen in years…they broke my heart in the 8th, only to make me smile in the 9th!!!
Oops. I mean
Erica’s PB – AWESOME
Does this count as another one of those Philly “wins” since they forced Mo in the game?
Johnny is this games MVP. What an at bat against Lidge and then the 2 SB’s.
johnny damon is so far the leading candidate for World Series MVP
joba is not a disgrace. feliz connected. joba did strike out the side. i like that i am seeing in joba now overall. i trust him 100 times more than franchise.
Um, Manuel – have you learned to hit Mo yet? I feel for Lidge – he hadn’t pitched in a dogs age

anyone else having an epic meltdown right now? In a good way I mean….
*****
I called my dad and he sounded like he was actually hyperventilating
________________________________________________________________
So was mine lol. And yes Johnny is the player of the game!
That was an unbelievable AB by Damon and even better baserunning. This is why shifts are stupid..
Thank you CC!
Thank you Johnny!
Thank you A-Rod!
THANK YOU BRAD LIDGE!!!!!!!!
Johnny Damon was Player of the Game-
I was doing victory skipping around my apartment
Johnny Damon – what a job!
I’m almost proud to be your proxy PBF for one night.
I’ll never tease you about ice skates ever again.
Rick Sutcliffe
The Phillies fans leaving are showing their respect for Rivera.
WHAT A TOOL
Awesome win
Even better to let them back in and then snatch it away
What a great win!
If the Yankees manage to finish off the Phillies, Johnny Damon is absolutely the Most Valuable Player. Those two stolen bases saved the game. Those two stolen bases are going to go down as one of the great moments in Yankee history.
JD is my HERO!!!!!
My hero!!!!
accuscore had it 6-4 Yanks
good call, accuscore
All in a day’s work.
Lidge looked like Mitch Williams out there
Well, the Phillies will have to beat the Yankees three in row with two at the Stadium.
Oh yeah, I will take Hamels’ ownage of Sabathia for Arod’s ownage of Lidge.
Not often that you hear national announcers sound so depressed after a game. Really sad.
Lidge didn’t really hand that to us. he was tough against Jeter and the Johnny D went all old school 2004 Sox windmill, fouling off nasty and such.
AMAZING!
The greatest edge in American team sports, bar none.
“just trying to get a good pitch to hit…just tryin to not do too much” how many times have we heard that one1
johnny rocket just earned himself a new contract with the yankees
it will be stupid to not sign him!
he became a true yankee legend today
Yanks win!
Imback and Mac Daddy lose!
If two people deserve pie its Damon for that epic at-bat and great base running, and A-Rod for overcoming his struggles to hit probably the biggest hit of his career so far.
Amazing win! 3-1, baby!
I said it in the pregame-
Damon is a Demon tonight !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
did he just tell alex to stop getting drilled?
Pinstripes pummeling
Livin’ large off of Brad Lidge
Philly feeling heat!
brad lidge’s era is 27!
“That was THE best game I’ve seen in years…they broke my heart in the 8th, only to make me smile in the 9th!!!”
————-
the 2009 Yanks are the Comeback Kids after all
they wait until the 9th to do the real damage
Damon is a baseball GENIUS
Seeing other closers work this postseason it just brings even more into focus how great Mariano is. He’s just unreal..
I better not hear any more stupid predictions from Rollins.
Johnny the Stuttering hero.
The Yankees have killed the closer for all three teams they’ve faced in the postseason.
God bless you Mariano Rivera!
Oh yeah, I will take Hamels’ ownage of Sabathia for Arod’s ownage of Lidge.
___
utley? hamels doesnt own anything
johnny rocket just earned himself a new contract.
he became a yankee legend tonight.
unbelievable.
“brad lidge’s era is 27!”

YAY!!!!!!
I am the happiest girl in new York right now. Now I know how Kate Hudson feels
Erica-
Must admit I didn’t take a shower before the top of the ninth, but after I washed my face and brushed my teeth, I turn it on and it’s 7-4 bottom of the 9th, Rivera cruises, and I find out with two out Damon sparked the rally!!!
Yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Damon had a great game and a greater pressure bat. Outstanding game by Damon and the rest of the team.
Damon’s at-bat was the best at-bat of the series. Heck, his at-bat may just be the series.
Devastating loss for Philly, but they have Lee going tomorrow.
CB, I may have missed your answer, but what are your thoughts about AJ tomorrow instead of Gaudin? I think it’s a mistake……

Hey Giuseppe! This one’s for you!
Yep, besides Damon, Arod came up huge, and Posada’s hit was huge too!!
Erica’s (and by proxy, DT’s LOL) PB rocked. Seriously, warrior is an awesome description for him.
“If the Yankees manage to finish off the Phillies, Johnny Damon is absolutely the Most Valuable Player.”
That was huge, but if Burnett beats Lee tomorrow I’d bet on him winning the MVP. When’s the last time a starting pitch outdueled 2 separate CY Young winners in the WS?
A-Rod doesnt even get that chance had it not been for Damon.
since ive really never experienced all the games in the 2001 WS, since i was 8 years old, this is probably the greatest game ive ever witnesses
Wow – you expert “guys” are mean tonight. That’s what ticks me off about you type of posters. You rain on everyone’s parade with your smugness.
Yeah, Joba gave up a HR but did Joe consider anyone else other than Joba for the 8th inning? How many relievers in that vaunted bullpen are there that he trusts Joba to bridge to Mo. You guys expect perfection. I would like to see each of you in that same position as Joba and see how well you would have done.
My take is that if you can’t be positive about the players and the team get the heck off the board. This wonderful team, warts and all, got to this WS without you. And they will win w/o you. RANT OVER
Lidge getting lit up
Damon, A-Rod, Posada
Philly Mo frantic!!!!!
Nice all, Erica!!
LOL

I love these postgame shows. Not for the highlights or press conferences, but because of those WB Mason commercials. Seeing John Flaherty immediately before a WB Mason commercial makes me think someone has to get flash to wear a fake mustache.
Just went back & watched Arod’s atbat again….man, he got his bat around so fast through the strike zone, a thing of beauty..

TEN WINS DOWN – ONE TO GO !!!
I love how YES just skips over all the times the Phillies scored
“He even ran into the 3rd out to get his buddy Mariano the save! ”
nick in sf-
he just wanted to get right back in there and get it over with mo coming in .
… but one thing i’m pretty sure we are not going to see when he retires is a Jorge Posada School of Baserunning.
very weird…the last 3 games have all been played in 3hrs and 25min
Let’s be realistic, if we don’t score in that ninth who out there really thinks we have any chance tonight. With Lee looming in game 5, It really could have been lights out.
Guillen needs to shut his pie hole. He looks more and more foolish every time he talks.
And the “One Dimensional” Yankees score 7 runs without a single HR.
I think I threw out my should doing Joba fists pumps after A-Rods and Posadas hits
Charlie Manuel is a cranky old man
Kruk start crying tool bag
Finally saw the replay of Damon’s steal and outrunning Feliz to 3rd. never have seen that play in all my long Yankee years of watching them!
John Kruk sounds like someone dropped a brick on his dog’s head.
Yankees! Good lucky!
