Flash Points: John Flaherty breaks down the Game 5 pitching match-up
Former Yankee and current YES Network analyst John Flaherty has agreed to break down the pitching match-up for every Yankees postseason game exclusively on the LoHud Yankees blog. Be sure to check him out on the pre- and post-game show on YES today. Here’s his take on the Game 5 starters:
YANKEES: RHP A.J. Burnett
WHAT’S HE THROW? “Two kinds of fastballs, power curveball, change-up”
BREAKDOWN: “To start with, I’m not that concerned about the three days rest thing – his numbers doing that are fantastic and more importantly, A.J.’s confidence is overflowing right now after doing what he did in Game 2. I think he is champing at the bit to get back out there. The one thing we’ve talked about all postseason is whether he can keep his emotions under control and I was impressed with how he handled the 0-1 situation in Game 2. This is a different set of emotions, knowing he can close out the World Series, but I have no reason to think he won’t be able to handle it, too. In terms of pitches, look for him to go back to that power curve as much as he can, especially if it’s working like it was in Game 2. He really was on top of it then and got most of his strikeouts with that pitch.”
——-
PHILLIES: LHP Cliff Lee
WHAT’S HE THROW? “Two fastballs, cutter, curveball, change-up”
BREAKDOWN: “Lee has had an unbelievable postseason and he throws everything – all of his pitches – for strikes. If you’re a hitter, you feel like you’re being attacked because there is just no room for patience at all. I think the Yankees will look to take the attitude that they can’t wait – they’re going to go up there hacking tonight, because if you try to wait him out you just end up down in the count and that’s when Lee can be even tougher to handle. I expect Lee to be as good as he’s been tonight, so it will be up to A.J. to hang with him and turn this game into a real battle.”
——-
EDGE: “On pitching alone, I’d give a slight edge to Lee but less than if you’d asked me at the start of the series. That’s how much I think of what A.J. did in Game 2. I’d say this, too: I think the first three innings are huge tonight. If Lee stumbles at all, and gives up a few runs, I think the Phillies might say ‘we can’t win three in a row against this team’ and make life easier for A.J. In a game like this one, I see one inning – or even one hit – being the difference.”

Lets hope for some timely hitting again by the yanks.

FYI Patrick–He’s not Rivera and he actually spit ON the ball, so there’s no need to bring this up.
repost:
Hey look, Chan Ho Park uses a spitball in last night’s game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuDZVJ8Hd8I
In that video, Park blatantly spits a huge loogie on his hand then rubs it into the ball
Love these Flash Points….. good job guys.
Regarding Francesa, I’m curious if anyone heard if he actually followed through and had that Yankee panel he was supposed to have Friday? I was stuck in meetings all day and couldn’t listen.
Being Positive
I say Jose Molina and GGBG both have RBIs, im pumped about this game, ill worry about game 6 if and when we play a game 6.
Wait did Francessa just say that Johnny couldn’t even throw Howard out??? He did except Posada couldn’t hold onto the ball
Guess the Line Up Standings

Flaherty is awesome. Best of the YES…
I am so tired of hearing the folksy FOX broadcast. I wish Sterling’s broadcast was in sync with the TV delay…
Any technology out there that allows one to mute broadcaster voice audio channel and still keep game sound? that would be amazing..
miggs,
It was postponed. One of the panelists canceled at the last minute
How about this scenario?
Jeter-Damon-Tex-Arod…1st inning damage, early lead…AJ throws another gem….is this impossible?
I think Chan Ho’s PhD dissertation in doctoring the baseball was advised and guided by the leading professor in the field, Dr. Cliff Lee. Joe G. could get a little subtle shot back at the Phillies for continuously plunking his guys this series by having the umps check Lee’s hat during the 1st inning.
I’m not making the mistake of leaving Damon out of my GTLU today….
Damon, Arod, Jeter and ummmm….. AJ Burnett.
It’s now time to play postseason “Guess the Line Up”
Post your line ups to me here (or any new threads) players AND POSITIONS. Please think very carefully, I will not accept any revisions.
I will accpet submissions until the sooner of the line up being leaked or 4pm. Absolutely no late entries allowed today.
With the standings so close and hopefully, no more rounds- every win matters. Good luck players!
DT-
I have said it the last two games and I think its very much worth repeating.
Damon is a Demon tonight!!!!!!
When are people going to stop with this 3 day nonsense. BP did a study and found that pitchers who pitched both on 3 days and normal rest in the same season actually pitched better on 3 days rest.

Love Jorge, but he jumps up too quickly much of the time rather than framing pitches. Even with nobody on base. This previous line was in response to somebody who said Jorge is great at framing pitches. Not an attack on Jorge in any way.
Please tell me somebody remembers it. There was a 2-0 count last night and the ball, IMO, was right down the middle, but Jorge jumped up and dropped the ball, the ball may have gone to the backstop and it may have been with nobody on base, but it was called a ball to make it 3-0.
I watched almost the entire game last night on mute. It’s frustrating to have your announcers removed during the postseason and replaced by 2 clowns.

I’m going with Swisher before Cano mainly because he is a switch hitter against the lefty, and Cano has been worse than Swisher so far this postseason. And I think Joe is going to go with Gardner after Molina, more lefty-righty stuff and mostly just a hunch. And btw, I thought I had 3 wins in GTLU? I could be mistaken…

Jim Kaat explains Ryan Howard’s struggles, Mariano’s dominance
09:30 AM11.02 Posted By: Andrew Perloff SHARE COMMENTS (2)
MLB Network analsyt Jim Kaat joined the show to discuss the World Series. Here are some of his takes.
– Kaat said the reason Ryan Howard is seeing better breaking balls than he’s used to in the postseason. Kaat said he fed off weak pitchers during the season and won’t have success against a lefty with a good breaking ball — like CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte.
– Kaat said that Brad Lidge had great stuff last night. The thing that got to Lidge was Johnny Damon surviving what looked like a strikeout. Kaat thinks the Phillies can committ to Lidge as their closer down the road.
– Kaat thinks the Yanks can finish off the series tonight to take it in five. Kaat says you have to play mistake-free baseball to beat New York, and Philly isn’t doing that.
– Kaat said that Mariano Rivera could probably play as long as he’s motivated. He’s got a style that doesn’t wear on his arm.
– Kaat is old school and thinks pitchers should stay in the game and learn to pitch through trouble. He doesn’t like today’s quick hooks.
“To me there has been no more valuable player in baseball the last 13 or 14 years than Mariano Rivera,” Kaat said.

couldnt agree more. i still think it should be a perk of winning to have your home announcers there calling the game. phillies get theres in 3-4-5, w eget ours 1-2, 6-7 (wont need those two this time)

I think Victorino was hitting. The ball was down the middle, and Jorge dropped it, the ump called it a ball. I don’t blame Jorge as much because the ump was all over the place last night with his strike zone.

Yeah, I can see Fox paying hundreds of millions of dollars for the rights to the World Series and then turn the announcing over to two local guys that cannot control.
Get serious.
Plus anyone who actually wants to hear John Sterling must hate baseball. He never lets what’s actually happening on the field get in the way of his description of it.
I listen to WCBS through the MLB At Bat 2009 on my iPhone through amplified speakers. I can then tweak the DVR so that they are in sync. I have not listened to one game on TBS/Fox the entire post season. I live in AZ so I have had enough of Mark Grace too. Friggin’ idiot homers.

Telling Statistic: At the single most important moment of the Phillies’ 2009 season, Charlie Manuel relied on a relief pitcher who finished the regular season with zero wins, eight losses, and a 7.21 ERA. Should anyone really be surprised that this didn’t work out particularly well?

mark grace is really living off his 2001 hit in the WS. Is there nothing else to talk about when it comes to him? Call me crazy, but i find ozzie the only one worth listening to out of those 4 in the pregame AND the 3 during the game.
“go back and watch game 2 over again buddy and then come back and talk to me…Molina stole at least 6-7 strikes in that game not that tey were all strike threes. But 2-1 and 1-2 are totally different situations on the world series stage…agreed?”
you don’t think umps know that a catcher is bringing a pitch back in .
they are questec. they can’t be letting a catcher fooling them.
too much of it and it probably gets annoying to them.
what they want is to be able to see the pitch. molina is a good catcher. i like him, but he’s not some kind of magician back there.
i think he may be able to steal a few pitches, but not enough to get 5-6 more strike outs.
i simply think you are taking a small thing molina does and trying to make it into a bigger things than it is.
i do agree a 2-1 count is very different from a 1-2 count.
just for fun let’s watch tonight to see how many 1-1 counts get framed where molina steals a pitch.

No love for Damon? I hear he’s popular and playing well not to mention Erica’s pick for MVP
“Plus anyone who actually wants to hear John Sterling must hate baseball.”
He’s better than the fox crew. They are overly hands on…trying to find an angle on every f’ing action on field. I’d rather just have natural game sound..that would be beautiful…well maybe not the “yankees suck” chants..
I don’t know if it was discussed, but what were peoples take on the Ryan Howard ruling when he did not touch home plate?
Since the Yankees threw to second and didn’t appeal by tagging Howard again, what is the official ruling?
Do they concede that call automatically, or can they call time and go in the dug out to tag him to appeal?
I find it strange that they would have to appeal while there was still a runner on base ?????
not sure if people have seen this yet, but great article on ESPN (big surprise there) on Damon’s Steal Heard Round the World. http://proxy.espn.go.com/mlb/p.....id=4615712
swing and miss-
dvr the game for one second and then line up the game with the radio! If Steling and Waldman are stinking it up themselves you can even go to 1050 espn radio. Not nearly as bad as Buck and McCarver.
Ah, thanks, guys. I kinda thought it was him, but why second guess at this point? He’s their closer.
This could probably be traced back, in part, to game 1, when Charlie chose to let Lee go 9, even though they were up by 6 and Lidge hadn’t pitched in forever.
I’m sure this has been brought up but I just realized Joe Girardi will be managing his first All Star game next year, in Anaheim.
CR9 – Right there with you on Jorge’s framing/jumping up, and specifically that pitch you mentioned. I was pretty frustrated with him at that point for a couple of other miscues (at least that’s what I’d call them), so that particular pitch drove me nuts.
I do agree that the ump was pretty bad last night, and he should be able to call a strike, even if Posada does the opposite of selling it. But to me, that’s the most frustrating thing about Posada. Love him as a hitter, and have generally been fine with him as a catcher, but he does none of the little things that other catchers do behind the plate. Doesn’t frame pitches (though I think umps that are fooled by framing are idiots), doesn’t react to bad pitches well (jumps out of his shoes, making strikes look like balls; seems to have no clue on balls in the dirt), doesn’t make many good throws to 2nd. Before he was injured, I really thought his throws to 2nd were getting very good. But he’s post-injury and older now, and he just doesn’t seem very good at it, anymore.
I know people keep quoting the 28% vs. Molina’s 28%, but I’m not sure that tells the whole story. I’d be curious to see how many baserunners attempt to steal vs. each pitcher, and then add in how many make it. Basically, steals per man on first, instead of steals per attempt. You’d think with their respective reputations, more people will attempt to steal on Posada that might not even try against Molina.
Again, I like Posada, but he seems to be deteriorating pretty quickly. That said, I still think he should either start tonight, or come in for Molina’s 2nd at-bat.
GET YOUR DAMN HANDS OFF HER-
I believe the rule is the ump is not supposed to signal one way or another out or safe. If Howard gets back to the dugout before someone places the tag he remains safe.
good idea on the dvr… i suppose I’ll save that for 2010. A loud bar will drown out the fox clowns…tonights the night!
Cool you can report it to me tommorow….and ask Mussina for instance what he thinks about Jose and how different it is to pitch to him….i love Jorge don’t get me wrong but i KNOW that Molina is an upgrade defensively and receiving to Posada. it is what it is!
Mo will be the MVP, he’s clearly the difference.
FOX . . . what can you say, just awful. Grace, Karros, Rose, Buck, even Rosenthal, none of them are palatable.
McCarver, believe it or not, has been alright this year. The man at least understands pitching. Being Carlton’s personal catcher counts for something.

Hmm… where to put Gardner and Molina?
option 1 – Gardner hits 7th because he’s more likely to get a hit than Jose. Also, Molina’s slow wheels can’t slow Gardy down.
option 2 – Hit Molina 7th, so Posada can hit behind Cano when he comes in to PH. Also, doubt it would come to this, but you don’t want Jorge getting pitched around to get to the pitcher’s spot. This also breaks up the lefties, for whatever that’s worth (not much).
I’m going option 1.

Mr. October-
as far as an appeal of the missed plate call the pitcher has to call time tell the ump he wants to appeal the runner missing a base. Clarify which base and what runner. At this point time is in. Pitcher must step off the mind and in this case throw home and catcher must tag the plate.

Two points:
1. Girardi never should have Molina catch Burnett in the playoffs. I said that was a terrible mistake before game 2 of the ALDS. Whether Burnett dominates or gets bombed is on him, not the catcher. Just look at his subpar start in Anaheim (Molina catching) or his fantastic start against Boston (Posada catching). However, since Molina has caught him the whole time, there’s no way Girardi makes the switch now.
2. The 3 days rest dilemma for AJ/Pettitte/Gaudin is a perfect example of Cashman’s failures at the trade deadline. It was unacceptable for him not to get a decent starter. Personally, I would’ve given up Jesus Montero/AJax for a Cliff Lee/Halladay. I’d rather have a stacked deck where the Yankees could dominate and win 2 or 3 titles the next couple of years with the core of the team still intact. I think the Yankees close it out tonight, but there’s obviously a huge risk of Pettitte on short rest if they lose tonight. Even picking up Pavano would’ve prevented the Yankees from gambling with a 3 man rotation.
~Watch everything the Phillies do tonight,Buck will say Phenomenal, fantastic, terrific, his favorite praises. He can’t gush enough.
~If the Yankees had hit a player 4 times in one series or any to this point,McCarver would sing a different song, and not of understanding.~

Thats a good point with a runner on base. I guess the best thig to do is continue with the throw down to second just in case and then before the next pitch appeal of the runner. As far as the ump he is supposed to not signal.

People take anything to complain about Posada.
Where was Posada’s credit when the pitchers were outstanding?I guess he only gets his credit when the pitchers give up runs. We won the game, just be happy.

Two points:
============================================================

Regarding AJ…
In Game 2 vs. the Angels he did a pretty good job of getting ahead of batters with first pitch strikes (mostly with the fastball). In Game 5 vs. the Angels, they seemed to come out swinging early and often…we all know what happened in that first inning before AJ adjusted his gameplan.
In Game 2 vs. Philly, he did an EXCELLENT job spotting that fastball to get ahead of batters.
Will Philly come out swinging against him tonight like the Angels did in Game 5?
If AJ has his good curveball tonight, I think he should use it early in the count so as not to be too predictable.
Just a drive-by to state the obvious. No matter who the Yankees put on the mound, this is do or die for the Phils so they are going to be super-cized motivated. Expect anything and everything.
Erica,
I’m definitely is the minority picking Hairston but being so far down on the list I thought it worth a try to move up.

Yeah i know Zmaster the Stadium should be open. And alright i like that idea i just want to know a place before i actually head towards there!

i’d like to see someone in there tonight with some numbers against lee, instead of just throwing Gardner in there. I’d be interested to see if Hairston or Hinske has had any success off of him in the past. I’m sure it would be a small sample, but I’d rather go with an experienced bat tonight with both Posada and Matsui out of the lineup. Lee is not going to struggle against the bottom four tonight.

Sorry buddy. I gotta say you’re out of your mind on that one.
Joba and Hughes are way too young with way too much potential to give up on them for another young reliever. 2 of our relievers who could still both end up as starters for one young reliever?
I’m not against trading Joba/Hughes for a top notch starter, but you can’t trade them for a similar pitcher, especially a 2 for 1 deal.

I’m here. Thanks for asking. My sister took her laptop back for a few days and now I’ve got it back until Wednesday.
I started walking for the first time since Oct 5th. Things are progressing slowly but surely. I’ve now been here four weeks and I’m hoping I’ve got just a couple more weeks left.
The one thing that really sucks is that I haven’t been able to watch the YES postgame coverage throughout the postseason and I won’t be able to watch the parade when they finally do nail it down.
Oh well. Things could be worse, but the timing of this disease sucks. Then again, is there a such thing as a good time to be bed ridden fof 4-6 weeks?
Meh, probably not.
Again, thank you for the concern. At least I’ve been able to enjoy this postseason.

both of you guys-Cashman’sGottaGo ans JeterHughesJoba- are real numbnuts and very boring…
point#1- You can’t argue with what’s working and AJ/Molina other than the first 12 pitches of the game 5 in Anaheim has worked beautifully as in an era of under 2.00.Give it up already
point#2-the Yanks are ONE WIN AWAY from winning the series this year and they are fully stocked in the farm with Jesus ready for duty late next year and AJax patrolling CF as early as next year as well.So if we win ONE MORE GAME then we accoplished out short term mission without having to sell our future! GREAT JOB CA$H! you know kinda like lettinf Johan walk to the mets, keeping Hughes and Joba and Melk and such with an eye on signing CC.How’s that looking?
as far as your “fantasy trade”….Kinsler hit .240 witha .300 obp and is bad defensively and Neftali is a one pitch pitcher right now who’ll probably move to the Pen. So why would i trade a superior 2b in Cano for an inferior one in Kinsler and throw in my two future aces in Joba and Phil and my future closer in Melancon for a future closer who maybe throws harder but doesn’t have nearly the control.
seriously guys stop it!

very good point wave your hat-
which makes it a perfect blog arguing point.
how would you know it was the framing that made the ump call a pitch a strike ?
the ump may have called the pitch a strike anyway if the catcher hadn’t frame it.
framing is a subtle art to fool the umpire.
very hard to say how much effect it has though we know it has some effect.

Thanks for asking. Murphy’s still in the hospital, they keep changing the possible worst case diagnosis. One doc thinks it’s lymphoma the other says heart or abdominal tumor. Hope they are all wrong. Labs (tomorrow) and ultrasound (today) should clarify the picture; if not it’s off to the veterinary cardiologist.
Hope to take her home tonight after the ultrasound so she can see the Yanks win it. Wish I could do something more.
Azaz,
Arod is having a great post season. But he is 2 for 14 in the World Series. Those 2 hits were big hits but you don’t usually get the MVP while hitting .143. He is not the front runner for the MVP yet. He needs to have a big game from a numbers stand point tonight, if the Yankees win, in order to take the MVP. I think Damon’s got a better chance right now. Damon has better all around numbers. But Rivera is also right there. Jeter is batting .412 and with a .444 OBP. That is second best in both categories for all batters in the WS. Matsui is leads all hitters in those categories.
For now, I think it is Damon, Rivera, Jeter. In that order. But anything can happen tonight.
Oh forgot about AJ. He is right there too.
Blackaccord,
Just be sure not to pop the champagne too early. The last time I did that was during Game 7 of the 2001 series when Soriano hit that bomb off Schilling.

The Yankees have won 113 games (so far) this year.
They have won every game imaginable.
But today, they must do the impossible. The Bombers must not only beat Cliff Lee, and the reigning champs… they must defeat “The Machine” – Accuscore.
Never in the course of humanity has it been done before. Toppling The Machine will forever cement this Yankee team as “One for the Ages.”

That bomb off undeserving co-MVP Schilling. That MVP should have been RJ. He is the one that rescued them and was their best. Not sure when Curt became a blowhard, but is it possible it coincided with his undeserved WS MVP. I think maybe it went to his head.

Come on… Trisha should be catching AJ. And Randy should be Posada.
You could be DH or somethin’.
I turn down the volume and sync the radio with the tv using my dvr. Sterling can be horrible at times in terms of the accuracy of his descriptions, but he has a great voice and he is entertaining. If you watch the game and listen to Sterling, you get to see what is actually happening (and laugh sometimes when Sterling is way off describing a particular play) and you are spared Buck and McCarver. It is the best of both worlds.

“I started walking for the first time since Oct 5th.”
Giuseppe Franco-
well you’re doing better than cano. he’s been trying for years and still can’t walk.
hope #27 makes the recovery go faster.
Chamblis said, “I turn down the volume and sync the radio with the tv using my dvr. It is the best of both worlds.”
How do you do this? Isn’t the WCBS feed 5 seconds ahead of the Fox TV feed? If the WCBS feed was behind the Fox TV feed, then I could see how you can pause the DVR and then synch it with the Radio. I would love to know how you do this.

Uncle Ellsworth:
Poor dog’s still in the hospital. (See note to upstate kate above 3:48 pm)).
Prognosis unclear, but may be coming home tonight at least temporarily. Thanks for asking.
Hope he’s OK.
I hope we win tonight. Because I don’t want to see Andy on short rest or this thing going to game 7.
At least he’d have Posada his personal catcher
(only kidding)
GF, if the Yankees win, I’ll tape the coverage on YES and send it to you if you want……..

Godspeed, my friend. Glad to see you back. Continue to feel better.

Very sorry to hear about your issues. Best wishes to you and family.
A 27th World Championship will do wonders for our recovery.

Zach, if a joke doesn’t come naturally, I just drop it. Nobody needs to be the centaur of attention all the time.
===============================================
Can I nominate this for the pun of the year? most excellent, young master Nick!
If the story is true, then it deserves to be played out. Coming from a faceless drifter packs a much greater punch than those in the media that think part of their job description is to poke fun at A-rod.
That pun definitely belongs in the blog HOF.
The DVR sync to radio broadcast is the way to go. My problem is living in South Florida we get sterling all year long and the post season except for the series as the local station here is contractually bound to espn radio with Miller and Morgan.
If I could get the sterling feed on line I would sync that with DVR. Does anyone know if that is possible? I don’t want to listen to Morgan and Miller nor Fox. If anyone knows how I can get sterling on line I would greatly appreciate it.
Here’s my lineup Erica,
Jeter SS
Damon LF
Tex 1B
Arod 3B
Swish RF
Cano 2B
Gardner CF
Molina C
Thanks, Comet

How do you predict baseball? IIIIIIIIT is A RIBBIE double for A-Rod….and now Mariano is coming in!!! WHOAAAAA!!!! If anyone can predict this game, give them my number!

I’ll certainly keep that in mind. Thank you so very much for the offer.
I’m going to try to get one of my parents or my nephews to TiVo it for me.
I’m hoping, but I’ll definitely keep you in mind.

Whereabouts in Orlando? Winter Park?
murphydog-
my mother has a parakeet that she loves that the vet told her three years it ago that it had a tumor and would only make it a few months and there was nothing the vet could do.
my mother did some reading and changed the parakeet’s diet to some special organic stuff and to make a long story short, the parakeet is now 10 years old and doing well.
the only problem is that my father who’s 88 says the darn parakeet is going to out live him.
he gets mad because he has to turn down the volume on late yankee games because the parakeet will wake up.
he mentioned that to me last night on my pre game call to him. i told him at least he doesn’t have to listen to mccarver and buck. he even doesn’t like them.
enjoy the game tonight with murphy if she can come home and may you get the gift of more time with her.
randy l.:
Thanks. Hope she’s breathing her doggy breath all over me as we celebrate No. 27.
champ809..
you’re probably not going to read this since everyone, like a pavlov dog, jump to the next thread instantly..but just take a look at ian kinslers career stats compared to cano’s.. the last 3 years kinsler has a slightly (yes SLIGHTLY)lower average, same amount of homeruns, same obp (actually higher) slg and ops, alot more stolen bases – his rbi’s and hits are lower but he has had almost 1000 less at bats due to injury – oh and take a look at his RISP stats – it’ll make you cry how much better kinsler is…and fielding percentage is similar…thats a no brainer
as for feliz – he throws 100 mph….and will be a starter..
have you seen hughes and joba pitch in the postseason this year? thats what they are – nice players nothing great…we’ve been making excuses that they are young but they been pitching in the mahors for 3 years now in one capacity or another – when is the young excuse going to go away?
is 50 cent really a Yankee fan ?
