Local paper incredibly confident in Phillies

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Nov 02, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Philadelphia Inquirer has apologized today for running an ad (from Macy’s) congratulating the Phillies on winning back-to-back World Series titles.

In a related story, George Steinbrenner is now in serious negotiations to make Bloomingdale’s the “official department store of the New York Yankees.”

This is just one example of the overconfident sillies!

Rollins will be apologizing soon, too. I even expect Darth Vader to “accept” said apology.

“The ad features a T-shirt from Majestic that has a giant logo, with “Philadelphia Phillies 2009 Back-to-Back World Series champions.”

Some poor children in Guatemala will be glad to hear about these shirts…..

How bout Jeter bunts to start the game? Runs will obviously be tough to get off Lee, so why not start with a bunt. If successful, you hit and run with Damon. Try to force the action, make something happen.

  5. Erin November 2nd, 2009 at 4:03 pm

That’s funny. A little over confident, no?

The DVR sync to radio broadcast is the way to go. My problem is living in South Florida we get sterling all year long and the post season except for the series as the local station here is contractually bound to espn radio with Miller and Morgan.

If I could get the sterling feed on line I would sync that with DVR. Does anyone know if that is possible? I don’t want to listen to Morgan and Miller nor Fox. If anyone knows how I can get sterling on line I would greatly appreciate it.

Can I nominate this for the pun of the year? most excellent, young master Nick!

If the story is true, then it deserves to be played out. Coming from a faceless drifter packs a much greater punch than those in the media that think part of their job description is to poke fun at A-rod.

That pun definitely belongs in the blog HOF.

I love this team. I have 100% faith in this team. I’m fully confident that we will win the World Series. But I also think this Series is going 7 games still. We’ve seen a degredation in the pitching performances of both Andy & CC on 3 days rest. We’re asking a lot for 3 starters to pitch a 7 game series. Please Yanks, prove me wrong tonight!!

  16. Josh in DC November 2nd, 2009 at 4:08 pm

YankeeRay, just get a subscription to MLB gameday audio. You can pick your feed, it’s pretty great. 15 bucks for the whole year, but since it’s only for one (I hope) game, there might be an a la carte option.

Or the MLB app for the iphone, which is great and you can play any feed from, as well. I think that’s only 5 now.

    Don’t ya Know, Cano 2B
    GardyMan CF

  30. Blackaccord November 2nd, 2009 at 4:17 pm

Few positives for the yanks to overcome the overall negativity and the posada/molina debate and Burnett/Gaudin debate…..

    1) If the yanks are keeping it close tonight in the 6-7 inning, the yanks have a great bench..Posada, Matsui, Hairston and Hinske… Phillies dont have that luxury..

    2) If Pettite starts to crack tomorrow, Gaudin is there for backup.. Its not like Joe is gonna leave Andy to take up the beating… If ppl think Gaudin can pitch tonight, he should be able to pitch tomorrow as well right??

    3) Yanks will have their A lineup with Posada and Matsui in Game 6 and Game 7 (if required)…

    4) The phillies best reliever Madson has thrown 42 pitches in the last 2 days.. If the yanks get to the phillies bullpen its advantage yanks again as they will face Park, Eyre, Durbin and Myers…

“framing is a subtle art to fool the umpire.
very hard to say how much effect it has though we know it has some effect.”

    Randy l-

Surprisingly though, I don’t think anyone has been able to quantify it. So while it exists, no one has been able to measure its impact on the game.

My personal theory is that, in order to succeed as a major league catcher, you have to be good at framing pitches, and that once you are good at it, being “better” at it doesn’t really help.

  36. Jeremy November 2nd, 2009 at 4:17 pm

Yeah. I think the best bet is to go with A.J. vs. Pedro. I don’t want to risk this series going to game 7. Pedro and Hamels can be beat, so why worry about Lee. I hope we win tonight but I think the Yankees did what they needed to do and that was taking 2/3 in Philly.

But it was still funny. :)

Erica, my lineup if the contest is still going:

Derek The Captain Jeter – SS
    Johnny Drama Damon – LF

Alex Half man, Half horse, All clutch Rodriguez – 3B
    Robinson Swings-a-lot Cano
Nicky The Jokeman Swisher – RF
Brett Fastest White Dude Alive Gardner – CF
    Jose
    Slow-mo Molina – C
    A.J. The Baker Burnett – P

  44. Jeremy November 2nd, 2009 at 4:20 pm

Andy Pettite was 1-1 with a 3.79 ERA in 2006 when starting in 3 days rest.. its not great.. but its not terrible either.. The yanks didnt need him in 3 days rest till now since he came back.. doesnt mean that he can’t do it..

I just can’t get enough of the centaur jokes. I really do hope that the story is true although it probably isn’t. If anyone were to have 2 oil paintings of himself as a centaur it would be A-rod.

I’d probably go with a griffin or a sphinx if I had his kind of money but I guess to each his own.

Erica, I fear the temptation would have been too great if you weren’t the queen of LF!!!

  60. DB November 2nd, 2009 at 4:31 pm

Is there anyway our bottom four just doesn’t look so horrendous tonight?

I know he is going to go with Molina, but you also have two lefties before him and AJ after him, ouch.

If we win this game tonight it will be because Philly lost it.

    SS Jeter
    LF Damon
    1B Tex
    3B ARod
    RF Swisher
    CF Cano
    2B Molina
    C Gardner
    P Burnett

At least try to break up the lefties, just for a different look. At least when Posada pinch hits he’ll be in a better spot.
