World Series Game 5: Yankees at Phillies (III)

Sam Borden
November
2

UPDATE, 10:40 p.m.: Well, not exactly what the Yankees were looking for with a chance to close the series out. It’s 8-2, Hughes is coming on and here’s a new thread for you to vent.

UPDATE, 11:18 p.m.: This isn’t over by a longshot. Tying run at the plate in the form of the Captain.

UPDATE, 11:24 p.m.: This is how it started last night – a big hit by Damon. …

UPDATE, 11:27 p.m.: Not this time. Tex strikes out to end it. Game 6 on Wednesday in the Bronx.

    ugh. bad bad bad.

  2. CR9

    Sam

Can you find out any umpires addresses and pass them along.

  3. West Coat Fan

    why did we pull Aceves?
now we’re playing the pitching change game

not that I don’t think we can’t score 6 runs in two innings but if someone would have asked me if I’d take 2 out of 3 in Philly I would have said absolutely!

I just hate looking silly….and we’re starting to

  4. MT.

We’ll win at home. Stay positive — you know the players will. Join them.

  5. rocco

    rather win at home anyway

  6. CR9

I’d love for to put their addresses in the hands of someone willing to pull a Marcus Camby on them.

  7. Benny Blanco

I’m so tired of the phillies having batting practice.

  8. 100 pitches of fun...

The Yankees can beat pedro. Some of you like 100 pitches need to calm down. You act like it’d the pedro of old.
    ——————–

Yeah because the Yanks really touched him in game 2 right? 2 homeruns threw 6 innings. That was a great display by the offense against a 98 year old.

  9. Golden

Embarrassing embarrassing performance tonight. Horrible all around. We’ll get ‘em on Wednesday at home.

  10. CR9

    Sam

Obviously, my comment was facetious, not that I am joking, but that you’d never do it and I’d never expect it.

  11. Evan

    I can’t stand Joe Buck

  12. DT - OPPC member

Just remember Phil Coke – when you point – three fingers are aimed back at yourself!

  13. The Future

Okay, Okay, so at the winter meetings we trade every friggin’ one of the “prosepcts” for Halladay. This was a disaster waiting to happen. Unreal.

Girardi is a bonehead. Showalter next year, no more Puke Hughes, Joba Nogood, Ian Shmennedy or even Ajaxjerk, Monterodork, Rominetoenail or anyone else. Enough, enough, enough!!!!

  14. Bryan

Nice of Girardi to blow this game

You are giving the game away with the bottom of that order in a NL ballpark with the freaking pitcher!!

Banking on Andy’s balky shoulder LOVELY

  15. vin

    “why did we pull Aceves?
now we’re playing the pitching change game”

It’s called the National League. Girardi couldn’t let him get an at-bat in the 7th inning.

  16. stacey

hope the yankee stadium will be loud for the yanks and will them to win wed..and get it done

  17. michelle b. -

The coke diet never works…this is ridiculous…at least we are getting the bullpen some work tonight. That way when the yankees win, they can tell their grandchildren they once played in a world series.

Phil coke to his grandkid: Hey i played in the world series.
    grandkid: how’d you do grandpa
Phil Coke: umm lets talk about how Mark Teixeira sucked.

  18. Zach in Port Jeff

I feel absolutely confidant in Andy for Game 6. Even if Gaudin does pitch today, we more than likely lose.

I dont feel comfortable with AJ facing the same team twice whether he’s on short-rest or full-rest.

Also, we get another shot at Pedro.

The Yankees did their job in Philly.

  19. GiantsCauseway

Is there a reason Utley hasn’t been knocked down yet? Demuth squeezed Burnett out of the game & the Phillies to game 6 & Girardi does nothing. He is such a wuss.

  20. vin

    “I can’t stand Joe Buck”

He’s much more palatable when the Yankees win.

  21. Conor

Gotta love that even though we’re down 8-2 Joe just keeps churning through the bullpen.

  22. West Coat Fan

2 hrs through six innings not threw…. sorry the teacher in me escapes sometimes

  23. Erica - always OPPC

    Dearest New York Yankees-

All season long you have been a thrilling team of comebacks, walkoffs and pie. You are now one win away from winning the World Series. It would be quite appropriate if your final win was a massive comeback. Forget chipping away. It’s time for a monster rally! No one is better than you! KILL PHILLY!!!!!! Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

    Sincerely Yours,
    Erica

  24. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

    Utley’s umpteenth launch

    Ibanez in orbit mode

    Coke bottle rockets

  25. Rob

I think the Yanks are going to hit pedro hard in game six, but they should have saved AJ for it. This is a mess, the Yanks have put themselves in a situation where Philly is going to feel great about their chances. OUR STARTERS ARE STARTING THE NEXT 2 GAMES ON 3 DAYS REST. Girardi is silly sometimes, I really hate his moves.

  26. CB

It’s truly hard to believe that Girardi was ready to use Phil Coke in a tie game in the bottom of the 9th yesterday rather than throwing either Mo or Robertson.

Thank goodness the yankees scored when they did. Girardi puts coke in that game yesterday and the yankees would have never gotten the chance to hit in the 10th.

  27. sunny615

game over… back to new york. two days for fans to stew and crucify Girardi.

  28. DDD

Noticing a lot of Bay Area Yankee fans on this site. On the off chance we don’t pull this one out, does anyone know of a true yankee bar in SF? Don’t say Connecticut Yankee. It’s a Sox as you get. Thanks.

  29. JZ

To those who think we should win game 6, which one do you prefer to start, short rest Andy or fully rest AJ?

    LOL

  30. Carl

They take out Victorino but leave in Lee. haha

  31. eric

Girardi has made piss poor decisions the entire game!

  32. stacey

lee back out…guess he really doesnt trust his pen

  33. Matty

Will any tix go on sale at the stadium???

To those who think we should win game 6, which one do you prefer to start, short rest Andy or fully rest AJ?

    LOL

    Short rest Andy

  35. vin

“Phil coke to his grandkid: Hey i played in the world series.
    grandkid: how’d you do grandpa
Phil Coke: umm lets talk about how Mark Teixeira sucked.”

What we need is to find a way to get Coke to pitch to Teixeira in a game.

  36. tampayank

Well at least the bullpen gets tommorow off but I’ll be nervous as hell Wednesday night

  37. stuart a

i cannot keep track of all the mistakes these 2 moron announcers make on a inning by inning basis. hughes can pitch far.. reallly einstein the phils winning after top of the 9th, the game is over.

mccarver should just suck manuels—. the homer sh-t on the telecast is laughable…

victorino got hurt, to f’n bad… the yanks CF is hurt also, almost not a word…………..the only good thing aj little man did tonight is hit victorino… that is the extent of the good things the cement head did tonight.

let’s recap aj with his personal catcher, cannot pitch on the road, and you never know what you get with him…

  38. DT - OPPC member

Erica – sounds like you want a really really really big rally.

  39. Erica - always OPPC

MPB Johnny Damon = Incredibly Awesome

  40. DVAB

Yes, and there you have it, folks. Whatever idiots were in on the decision to start AJ Burnett on short rest to face the hands down BEST pitcher on the Phillies in the postseason, to GUARANTEE that the Yankees not only go back to New York, but now HAVE to either pitch a complete SLUG ( Gaudin ) or Andy AND CC on short rest ( 3 starts in a ROW, nice ! )in games 6 and 7 ( IF, I mean WHEN it goes 7 games ), will be held accountable for putting the TEAM in a position to blow a 3-1 World Series Lead. I know that it was REAL TOUGH to predict that A) Lee would pitch well and B) HOT AND COLD ALL SEASON AJ would come out cold on 3 days rest after a HOT performance……ROCKET SCIENTISTS were required to figure that out, right ?…Of course, after the game, Girardi and Cashmen ( IF he has the stones to admit he had a hand in the selection ) will say ” We felt AJ gave us the best chance to win tonight” and that is just Horse Hockey !. This was a throw away game that they would have had the SAME CHANCE to win with Gaudin on the mound ( like as in SLIME and NONE ) and will a little STRATEGY ( Oh, my Girardi, you fool, ya ever heard of that ? )….we would have a RESTED AJ in Game 6 AT HOME ! ( Oh, and does Joe have the stats that show AJ stinks on the road ? ) Whoever pitches on Wednesday better putt a wabbit outta his arse and the bats better explode, because the momentum will be SQUARELY in the Phillie dugout for a game 7. What a totally bonehead move that played out tonight….just frickin’ terrible !

  41. stacey

doubt he would pitch game 7 then right

  42. WS

Maybe Rivera can go 4 innings Wed.

  43. Erica - always OPPC

All I want is a really, really, really, big rally.

I do not think that is too much to ask

  44. Bronx Bombers Girl

Thanks Erica for writing the letter. I think it is just what the doctor ordered. :)

  45. rconn23

And how is Joe supposed to not churn through the bullpen when your starting pitcher couldn’t go more than two innings.

Place the blame on Burnett, where it should be.

  46. CR9

Come on GUYS. YOURE RIGHT ERICA. WE CAN DO THIS.

  47. Jeremy

Guys the reason why the Phillies have scored is because of two people: A.J. Burnett, Phil Coke.

We will win this in Game 6 like the ALCS. I know that if Burnett pitched game 6 we would be in trouble.

  48. Stultus Magnus

    Tex needs to do something.

    best idea yet.

  51. JasonR

    This is Grady Little II.

  52. CR9

    SCREW THIS UMPIRES!!!

COME BACK AND SHOVE IT IN THEIR EYE.

  53. Carl

    Rally baby rally!

  54. Jones

    Yeah, finally

  55. trisha - OPPC forever - (new lucky picture from last day at the old Stadium) BRING ON THE GHOSTS!

“Should we take 2 of 3 and be happy? Yes.”

I would say we should. And be happy. And stop complaining about a bad night. But that’s just me. I know others feel better to get it out of their systems. Just different ways of processing, I guess.

However, since I personally find Monday Morning Quarterbacking to be nothing more than an exercise in second-guessing by those who can’t deal with losses, I will say that Game 6 will be ours – if things continue in this direction – and bid you all a fond good night.

GO YANKEES!!! Thanks for an amazing season and postseason thus far.

    :)

  56. Zach in Port Jeff

    Who’s gonna knock one out?

  57. Stultus Magnus

    That’s something.

  58. Trevor

Now the decision to bring in Coke looks really bad.

  59. 100 pitches of fun...

Thank you Coke for giving up the 800 foot homeruns. Yanks would of had a chance otherwise.

  60. Benny Blanco

Tex has no clue. Hey tex, admit your struggling and move on…..and as i type this he gets a hit.

  61. Thanatos

Finally! But if we score a couple now, Coke’s performance will be all the more frustrating.

  62. Erica - always OPPC

    DT-

All I want is a really, really, really big rally.

I think this team has it in them……

  63. stacey

nice time to show up…but he would be nice if he could find his strike back

  64. The Future

I will shout down ANYONE who tells me about keeping a Yankee prospect again.

  65. CR9

THIS COULD FALL APART QUICKLY IF THEIR BULLPEN GETS INVOLVED.

  66. michelle b. -

well we have seen this team score 6 runs and more in one inning several times this yr and in the post season.

  67. lil' m

I’m just hoping the offense has some real life on Wednesday. They should be able to score more than just 2 or 3 runs against Pedro or whomever the Phillies start. Fortunately this blog provides all the news and updates in the meantime.

  68. Zach in Port Jeff

    I say swing first pitch.

  69. ElGuapo

Last batter for Lee, but was that a high enough pitch count to keep him out for the duration?

  70. stacey

last inning really hurt w/those 2 homeruns

  71. Triple Short Of A Cycle

    Jones,

Before this season name 5 big hits he has gotten in the postseason.

  72. gary m

I hate to second guess but it looks like we lost the game, and Burnett. I guess we needed to do what Phillies did and pitch a clear #4 guy to give the top three ample rest. up 3-1 would have been the best time to do that, as down 3-1 or at 2-2 wouldnt make sense. I guess if it were me, I would have started Guadin, send him through their lineup once. Then Aceves through the line up once. Then Robertson through the line up once. Maybe you`d have 6 innings carved out. Still have Burnett, and maybe be better than they were today

  73. DT - OPPC member

Maybe Boston Dave should start a “we want Lidge” chant…

  74. WS

The least we can do is go out fighting and maybe take some offensive momentum into G6. A HR by ARod would be a nice start lol

  75. Carl

    YES!!!!

  76. beetle

The Yanks may lead 3-2, but Philly sure looks like the far better team.

And, no, don’t be “loyal” to players that are giving half-assed efforts, like Cano and Tex. Even if the Yanks win the WS, neither of them contributed anything.

One more thing…why can’y anyone on the Yanks take fat pitches and clobber them like Utley? NY is pretty much punchless unless they get a bloop or bleeder. Give me an Utley over an Arod or Tex any day of the week. That guy is a superstar.

  77. Yankee44

    Well now.

  78. JasonR

This is Grady Little Part II. It’s a blowout game, why burn your pitcher in Game 5 when you might need him in Game 7.

  79. CR9

YEAHHHHH COME ON NEVER SAY DIE

  80. Carl

    leave him in Grady Little!

  81. stuart a

yea the yanks should have starting chad gaudin…give me a break that is so stupid it is not even worth arguing over….

    yea sure..gaudin is a bad bet clowns…..aj just stunk…….

  82. Scared of the Wall

Yanks will probably score 4 runs in the next 2 innings… thanks Coke.

  83. eric

ugh- phil coke, you’re killing me right now.

  84. The Future

“Oh, Shmennedy and Rominetoenail are really raking in Peoria.”

    Who. Gives. A. Crap.

  85. Benny Blanco

    would have been 6-4

  86. michelle b. -

Alex threw the bat like he hit a HR. Hes lucky it dropped.

  87. Pepitone

Well, I predicted this series would go 6, and I also predicted the Yankees would win games 3 and 4. They took care of business, now all they have to do is take care of game 6 and we’re in business.

I hate to see them get their clocks cleaned though. Happened in the 1977 W.S. with the Dodgers too, Yankees won games 3 and 4, but the Dodgers smoked em 10-4 in game 5!

Then they went back to Yankee Stadium, and, well, you know what happened then: Reggie! Reggie! Reggie!

Maybe this time they will be shouting, A-Rod! A-Rod! A-Rod!

Anyway, on to game 6 -

  88. KF

    Who’s ready to quit now?

  89. 100 pitches of fun...

Nice going Arod..Once again thank you Coke. It would be a 2 run game.

  90. terpbomber (not a bridge jumper)

All we need now are some back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back, etc. homers.

  91. vin

This hurts all the more. But I’ll gladly take it.

  92. pat

  109. JZ

hey, no matter what, our NL lineup touched Lee.
    4ER.

  110. Betsy

I expected Pedro to pitch well in game 2 and I expect him to pitch well in game 3. At this point, the offense is what it is – it’s not going to be great. I do think the Yankees are a better team, but the Phillies are getting their groove on tonight (to be fair, against the worst of the pen, but still……..) and they are a tough, tough bunch to beat. However, that said, the Yankees are a resilient group – they didn’t win 103 games and get to 3-1 in the WS by being patsies. The mediots will blow this one game out of proportion and try to instill panic in fans, but the Yankees won’t panic. They got 2/3 at least in Philly which is a tremendous job. I worry about Andy on short rest, but really – if they can’t close this out at home, then they deserve whatever criticism they get.

Alex has made terrific adjustments from the first two games this series.

His swing looks very, very good again. Much like it was against the twins and angels.

He hits a rope to RF to start the game. Now a laser to LF.

It’s really unfortunate that instead of Posada – the guy who got a huge hit late in the game yesterday – they have Swisher and Cano coming up.

Hopefully they can cycle the line up so they can get Matsui to hit for gardner with men on base.

That would be something. They might need to put pena in the outfield.

If the Yanks lose this game, they still leave here up 3-2 and go back to the Stadium. Not a bad deal.

  212. CB

“This would be a 1 run game if not for that idiot Coke.”

  223. DVAB

  224. Mark

5 runs off of Cliff Lee, all AJ had to do tonight was be average.

  225. Scared of the Wall

Would have been 6-5 going into the 9th… grrrrrr…

  226. Vader

Nick…at least he likes something that I can agree with.

  227. JasonR

More importantly, if this somehow goes to Game 7. Cliff Lee is almost certainly out of the equation after throwing 112 pitches today.

  228. Tom

Gardner with his typical uselessness at the plate.

It’s tough to win when you hand the Phils 4 automatic outs like that.

  229. BA

So the question is…. Can Brad Lidge do it again?

  230. Benny Blanco

This all falls on AJ, he gave up 6 runs.

  231. zmaster!!

where were this chipping of runs in the earlier innings…. cmon!!

  232. give me ws tickets

if we lose this game, it is phil coke’s fault (and girardi of course – but you can’t blame someone with autism or down syndrome for being retarded)…great point cb – if damon and arod hadn’t come thru and gotten us the lead last night, and girardi brought in phil coke in a tied ws game – i would have literally driven to philly and planted a bomb in girardi’s car…..i WISH that i could have a job where i got paid millions of dollars to work for about 1 minute every 3 or 4 days (facing one batter) and not lose my job after not only failing miserably – but doing the job as horribly and patheticly bad as i possibly could

  233. Mark-Cant Touch This

Imagine is A.J pinched descent, Gardner knew ho to hit a fastball right down the middle, coke knew how to get out lefties and Cano knew how to hit with runners on.

  234. CR9

Andbody see Swish talking in the dugout about that deliberate cheap strike 1. The ump knew it was a key situation and he took away a possible 2-0 count.

We can win off Lidge only down 3 runs. Have to keep it there.

  235. stacey

wish melky wasnt hurt…he asleast more of a threat than gardner is

  236. Trevor

Too many pop ups and weak fly balls for Gardner. Needs to start driving the ball. Or atleast hit it on the ground.

  237. daver

    Coke and AJ….thanks for nuttin’!

  238. KF

    “What a terrible, terrible game.”

posada, matsui(ph), jeter, damon, tex, and arod.

  241. 100 pitches of fun...

Lidge is probably good for 1 or 2 runs but I doubt he is giving up 3.

  242. ElGuapo

So how about those calling Gardner for Melky? Be careful of what you wish for…

  243. Rob

I’m peeved, why did girardi put coke in… you want to keep the game close, and now those hr’s count, and they count big. It will be mighty important for Hughes to lockdown right now, 3 runs is quite possible in this park especially considering this: posada, matsui, jeter, damon, tex, arod. That’s what’s coming up next inning. You think they put in madson, or do we get lidge again?

  244. Golden

Gardner’s bat is terrible. Missing Melky who can actually make solid contact. This rally is too little, too late.

  245. Mike Jaret

gardner….waste of lineup spot….goddang melkys injury!

  246. stacey

phillies might not even bring in lidge ..have to see

  247. Blackaccord

girardi can’t be faulted for bringing in coke.. he had to use someone and with 2 lefties, he had to bring in a lefty.. Now if the yanks have some good ab’s in the top of the 9th, we can tie it up..

It’d be nice in a World Series clinching game for a starting pitcher to be able to go more than two innings.

If Burnett could have even put together a servicable start, 6 and 4 runs or so, the Yankees could have had a shot at winning this game Coke would have never gotten on the field.

Gaudin or Bruney? I say Gaudin. Maybe stay with Hughes?

Good news: Lidge or Madsen coming in next inning, and both are gassed.

Bad news: Posada, who has had a crappy WS, is up first.

3-2 right down the middle to Utley.

2-1 right down the middle to Ibanez.

3 straight curveballs to the 8 hitting catcher in the strike zone to give up an 0-2 base hit.

They aren’t being creative out there and mixing it up, and the Phillies hitters are blatantly sitting on pitches. The game is not over, it wasn’t when it was 6-2, it isn’t now at 8-5. You have to go out there and mix it up, you can’t keep feeding them the same pitch.

Who want to win right here? – Raise your hand!
Who hasn’t given up? – Raise your other hand!
Who believes in the Yanks? – Raise your left leg!
Who wants #27? – Raise your right leg!!

Now pick yourself up and start over again….
    *******

Is this Yankee baseball or naked Twister????

  344. 100 pitches of fun...

Madson has that off speed pitch that the Yanks have chased or just got fooled on.

  345. stacey

    Lets go Yankees..

  346. CB

Madson is a two pitch reliever who doesn’t throw a breaking pitch.

He’s a fastball change up guy. His change has a lot of fade to it.

They need to lay off that change and attack his fastball.

  347. Michael T

Chad we get it. Utley is a great hitter, and as such was probably really great at AAA (aren’t most great hitters going to kill AAA since this is league which sometimes gets blown through by the best pitching talent).

Oh and you were there covering the beat.
And some of us (inc. me) didn’t even need to see him hit 7 HR in this Series, or hear your reports of how good he was 5 years ago against bad pitching to know that.

  348. Brandon AWESOME! (BECAUSE In New York! This song isn't what dreams are made of!)

So I guess gm.6 Wedensday is where we’ll be?

  349. stacey

a homer would be a rally killer.

  379. CB

  385. 100 pitches of fun...

He had a good rip on that one

  386. Ed - 2009 is the year of the Yanks

  387. Benny Blanco

MADSEN IS NERVOUS. Arod will save the day.

  388. terpbomber (not a bridge jumper)

At least if they’re going to lose, it shouldn’t be of the going down 1-2-3 variety.

Another huge hit by Matsui off the bench.

  584. pat

    Tex left Alex hanging.

Put a little scare into them though and Pedro ain’t going 8 innings.

  585. Michael T

Man I would have loved to see Arod get a chance to tie it. But Jeter has done more than his part this series.

  586. michelle b. -

Cliff Lee’s hat is really dirty…

  587. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

So close. Man, too bad about AJ and Coke.

Oh well, be nice for them to win it in the Bronx in front of all their own fans.

Ugh. The last person I want to hear from is Jimmy Rollins.

  588. Yanks_Fan

Tex has been practically a black hole in this lineup. If he isn’t hit by a pitch, he doesn’t help much.

  589. Bryan

They didn’t stroke one strike to him and he still whiffs with help from the ump

Bat his 8th he is killing the team!

  590. PittsburghYankeeFan

Phillies won that one by the skin of their teeth.

Had Jeter got a hit, ARod would have come to the plate and won the game.

OK–back to NY. Phillies have no BP, and weak starting pitching.

  591. Wade

    Teixbook unclutchness per usual

  592. BigSix

    TEX is Killing this team.

Up 3-2 and he has 1 solo homer to show for it.

    Very frustrating loss tonight.

Coke mailed it in. Jeter over anxious. Tex has flat out sucked.

  593. JMK aka The Overshare

    Coke is the goat

  594. Blackaccord

on a game we were trailing 8-2 in the 8th inning and have the tying run at bat, is a never say die attitude of the team.. this team is winning in game 6….

  595. trisha - OPPC forever - (new lucky picture from last day at the old Stadium) BRING ON THE GHOSTS!

    Nice try Yankees.

Fans of 30 other teams are twiddling their thumbs right now. Count your blessings Yankee fans.

  596. CB

    Pepi,

His swing is longish to begin with. It’s very long right now and he’s just not adjusting to the barrage of off speed pitching he’s being fed.

He needs to shorten his swing and not try to dead pull pitch after pitch.

  597. WS

Back to the Bronx to see some REAL pinstripes instead of these candy cane looking Philly unis

  598. Rob

    Super crappy!

  599. Laura - "You should know I bleed Blue, but I ain't a Crip though"

Jeter’s DP was the rally killer. Now we know why he’s always looking to bunt runners over.

  600. Mark-Cant Touch This

This team never quits. Great Effort we will win this thing Wednesday, no more Lee Pedro will be lucky to go 6. :-)

  601. 100 pitches of fun...

AJ was terrible but Coke cost them the game. 2 homeruns to 2 lefty batters. Really can’t be any worse than that.

  602. Swish's Fishes

damn! just goes to show 8 runs is still barely enough, even with your BEST PITCHER starting and AJ out after 3!

  603. JZ

    Captain is anticlutch tonight!
It’s impossible to comeback after dp.

    Tex!!!! classless as Cano.

    Damon is my man.

  604. Ariel Bachar

this series is over in 6. Philly will choke. Even Fuentes closed a game

  605. Comet

Girardi pinch runs for A-Rod in the ACLS but not for Matsui here? A Brain cramp? Using Phil Coke another brain cramp.

  606. terpbomber (not a bridge jumper)

At least they went down with a fight. Has anyone tried to reach out to Tex to guide him through this funk? We have only half a player right now.

  607. JRod

Way to fight back guys. We will get them on Wednesday!

  608. Teejay

Wow those two homers off Coke were a killer.

  609. tex's friend

yankees put up a fight. at least we know they will not roll over.

  610. Vader

No need to dissect this one…Lee was supposed to win his starts and now the Phillies need to get someone else who can beat the Yankees.

  611. sunny615

    stupid pitching…

  612. Erica - always OPPC

    new thread

  613. memories...

can we drop tex to 6th in the order like torre did arod? i mean, anything else would not keep this upcoming choke the same as 2004. so we need tex dropped to 6th to keep the choke tradition/curse alive

  614. Rob

Girardi should be fired! As we lose this series, we could have done the exact same thing this game with Gaudin pitching. SO LAME.

  615. DYNASTY IS DESTINY!

    Doubling up Jeter

    Madsen makes it maddening,

    Damon’s dart, Tex hexed!

  616. v

at least we lost the game, not the momentum

  617. Teejay

Girardi pinch runs for A-Rod in the ACLS but not for Matsui here? A Brain cramp? Using Phil Coke another brain cramp.

    ————————–

Even if he did pinch run for Matsui with Pena it was going to be a doubleplay anyway.

  618. PittsburghYankeeFan

Leave Tex alone. His glove saved us many a time.

However, I would have been a bit more selective with ARod on deck and I would have worked the count a bit more.

Also, why not run Pena for Matsui and stay out of the DP? Not sure I agree with that piece of strategy.

  619. rconn23

Incredible fight by this team. Incredible.

If their starting pitcher didn’t implode for 6 runs in two innings they win the game and the World Series.

At least this game, once and for all, put to rest the great catcher debate, which wasn’t a debate to begin with.

The only person responsible for Burnett’s meltdown is Burnett.

  620. JeterJobaCanoFanForever, enough said

Let’s hear it for our team for a gutsy try! They never give up and neither should their fans.

Damon is a wonder! Clap, clap, clap. Now to home!

  621. beetle

“Even if they lose, which they wont, they have battled really really hard!”

Yeah, sure, Tex really battled…really battled hard, lol.

    I HATE TEX

    And the Captain CHOKED.

  622. West Coat Fan

whose the interviewer with Rollins saying “we” and why is FOX using him….no bias there

  623. 100 pitches of fun...

Jeter hits into DP’s 99.9% of the time in those spots. I don’t know why I didn’t expect it in that spot. Tex is killing them. He is basically useless swinging at anything in sight and batting 3rd. He should of been 3-0 in the count and then Arod could of gotten a chance.

  624. Jeremy

The Phillies are done. The Yankees showed them that they will always fight no matter what. The Phillies don’t have Lee, and there bullpen is shot. The Yankees will win this in 6.

  625. Adam D.

Yanks had a pinch runner his name is Romero Pena, he’s in for Melky. He would have made it to second a lot faster than matsui and maybe slid into the guy, something! Instead my hero grounds out and mr. No knees is running to second. Easy DP, and Mr. I only play with my glove ends the game. I wish we would have lose 8-4. I don’t like when we shoot ourselves in the foot so close to a come back. Whatever win it in the Stadium frick the Phillies and their fans.

  626. who should replace girardi as our next manager??

can somebody please, PLEASE explain to me why girardi didn’t have someone pinch run for matsui – who cant play the field and would have been substituted for anyway??? am i missing something, or was that as mind-boggling as it seems?

  627. Pepitone

I really expected Mark Teixeira to have a great series, wow, was I ever wrong!

He looks like he has lost all confidence in his ability to hit a baseball.

If he were a young player, I would understand, but this guy is a seasoned vet!

    I don’t get it!

CB, any thoughts? Is it just Phillie scouting, or is he just nervous?

  628. trisha - OPPC forever - (new lucky picture from last day at the old Stadium) BRING ON THE GHOSTS!

“No need to dissect this one…Lee was supposed to win his starts and now the Phillies need to get someone else who can beat the Yankees.”

    AMEN!

  629. MT.

Yes, the catching debate is over. Over forever. Champagne on Wednesday. Goodnight LoHud.

    :)

  630. Vader

When did it become common place for the media to show such a bias…I mean Grace why don’t you just wear a Phillies hat?

44 hours and 33 minutes until Game 6!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    ________________________________________________________________
44 hours and 33 minutes of people complaining. UGGGGGGG

I’m really not all that upset we lost. Deep down I wanted to d this at home.

  634. YankeeKid

Tex is struggling…he needs to get back on track real SOON

  635. Scared of the Wall

Burnett was disappointing to say the least, but those 2 HRs surrendered by Coke really stings.

Coke and Bruney have proved in this series that they are not capable of pitching well even when they are down a couple of runs. This bullpen has been insanely frustrating this postseason.

  636. Arn

    Coke is the goat…

    =====================

Thanks, CB, I didn’t see this until AFTER I posted the above question. I hope Kevin Long can get with him, and help him straighten it out before Wednesday. This team needs him to snap out of it.

  638. PL

cant give up 8 runs and expect to win a ball game

  639. West Coat Fan

was that Grace interviewing Rollins, I wasn’t watching just listening…..I thought he was a Phillies broadcaster or something seriously that is wrong…you can’t say “we” when you’re doing a national broadcast

  640. hman

Just a big bummer from Jeter.

  641. West Coat Fan

    Yankees aren’t in a bind…..

  642. PL

Tex is really just as bad as Cano…really atrocious

  643. Arn

I really hope this short rest decision does not come back to haunt this team.

  644. PittsburghYankeeFan

Coke isn’t going near a baseball mound until spring. They should tell him to go home, but they won’t since he’s hopefully going to be part of the celebration.

Pettitte needs to go 6 solid innings. That’s it. The bridge to Mo has been restored. If they are up at all, he goes 2. Marte goes 1. The rest can go 1.

This is the way this season of redemption has to end.

Pedro the devil (where is the little guy Nelson, btw) pitching game 6 against Andy, one of the poster boys for the dynasty teams. Three days rest? You can rest all season.

No more AJ theatrics (does he need a sports psychologist?).

    No more Posada/Molina BS.

ARod on the biggest stage, with a chance to do lots of damage.

    I can’t wait for Wednesday.

Positive Trisha, wish I could say it like she does. I am more in your face. But I am a YANKEE FAN and proud of it. I love this team, everyone of them!!!

Do not play the blame game, fans. This team will win it all.

  646. p. dizzle

I did NOT want a Game 6. Things can get random now with Pedro coming in.

  647. zgveritas

Tex hit well against Pedro last game. Expect more of the same next game.

  648. PittsburghYankeeFan

    p dizzle

Yeah, right. Against a head case with no command, and a lefty prone to giving up HR.

I think the Phils need to worry about the Yanks. This team woke up, and almost stole a shocker.

  649. Michael T

The Philles scored 8 runs in 3 innings against 2 guys they will never see again this series. And zero runs in 6 innings against guys they might. If you are Charlie Manuel aren’t you really worried about getting through 54 outs- without Cliff Lee- at Yankee Stadium without at least a coupe of beatdown rallies??

  650. uncle tito

Anytime there’s a runner at 1st with less than 2 outs, Jeter will GIDP. Thats why they fliped-floped him with Damon.

Truth is he hasnt been clutch in a while. He struck out in the 9th yesterday to make the 2nd out before Damon had that at bat.

He has always been a complementary player, not a guy who can carry a team like Alex.

  651. girardi's IQ is below 65

i know the yankees are in the ws – but i dont care – girardi is a PATHETIC manager, and if it wasn’t for arod, mo, and cc, the yanks would have almost definitely lost in the 1st round, and this would be a different conversation….i still think the yanks will win, but this postseason has made me seriously question girardi’s ability as a manager – bottom line is he is a very, very stupid person – and he brings NOTHING to the table. thank God the yankees have been able to overcome his stupidity and worthlessness with their overwhelming talent – but thats the only reason, girardi deserves no credit and he should not be the manager of the new york yankees

  652. West Coat Fan

Win it at home in the new Stadium!! A perfect ending to a great year in the new Stadium!! It wants the celebration! Only wish I could be there!! Can’t wait for game 6.

  653. West Coat Fan

whoa…easy there “girardi’s IQ is below 65″ I’m not a big fan either but he is the manager and he deserves some respect

  654. Rob

JETER SUCKS! JETER SUCKS! Totally over-rated.

  655. DOC

At least Robertson, Aceves and Hughes pitched well.
    We’re getting our bullpen back

  656. Rob

Jeter, really blew that. But Coke is crappy.

  657. Rob

I think Pedro is going to get slapped around. But I also think so will Andy, it’s a coin toss up.

  658. PittsburghYankeeFan

This game was a free pass. At least it wasn’t won or lost with an in game mistake.

The Phillies were extremely lucky to escape tonight. They know it. Did you see the bench towards the end of the game?

We’ll know pretty quickly if Andy has it. If not, same game plan as tonight.

Time to stuff it right down Pedro’s throat. Who’s your daddy?

  659. JeterJobaCanoFanForever, enough said

Rob, if only I had the power to do so I would BAN you from watching the rest of the series. Jeter not only has the highest batting average during this series, his play has been spectacular.

There were many at bats during this game when anyone could have come up with a key hit. It is not right to call out a player for one AB, one pitch or error. Everyone contributes (or not) to the game.

An attitude like yours is deplorable.

Don’t ever, ever bad-mouth Jeter again.

AND to you TEX and CANO haters, may the bed bugs bite you all night.

  660. JeterJobaCanoFanForever, enough said

PittsburghYFan: I saw that too, the players in the Phillie dugout were not looking like they were going to win the game. They did luck out though by having Lee pitch tonight.

The Yankees will win in in YS so all fans there can celebrate. For those of us not in the NY area – we can just make a lot of joyous noise. Go Yankees.

  661. Jones

    Triple Short Of A Cycle,

-Game 4 against the Tigers (I think 3 years ago??). A homer, even though they lost bigtime.
-Game 4, 2001 a homerun against Zito, which spoiled Zito
-Nov 10th, 2000 against the Rangers, had a two-run homer in the eighth tied the game for the Yankees. He also had a lot of RBI’s that day.

    I tried &
Thats some of what I came up with. But stating that he’s not clutch is an ‘understatement” In the past his PO numbers weren’t the best, but if you would include the actual season I can make a hug list of his clutch hits.

  662. igotid88

Tex should wait on the changeup. And we should’ve had Lee out an inning earlier.

  663. lil' m

Great commentary by Ken Singleton on YES postgame – he said game 6 will be a interesting from a pitching standpoint as to which pitching staff can survive game 6 and come away with a win. Kay said it will come down to which bullpen will be better. He doesn’t think either Andy or Pedro will be able to go deep into the game, and the only trustworthy reliever in either pen is Mo.

Betsy, you may be right that at this point, this is what the Yankees offense is. We can only hope that being back at home with a real lineup will help and some of the slumping guys perk up. The Yankees may have to slug their way to #27.

Haters: Enough with the “gutless” and “choker” stuff. Tex is having trouble hitting. He’s not choking, and he certainly hasn’t taken it out onto the field. Maybe Kevin Long can help him come around, maybe not. Either way, Tex is a great player having a rough postseason on offense, period. AJ had a bad start at about the worst possible time. He was great in game 2. End of story. He’s great sometimes and terrible at others. I’ll take it – he’s a standup guy, a great teammate, and the upside far outweighs the downside IMHO.

Rob: Jeter? Really? You remind me of the people who booed Mo when he blew two saves against the Red Sox in the first home games of 2005. Just so wrong.

  664. netightman
