UPDATE, 10:40 p.m.: Well, not exactly what the Yankees were looking for with a chance to close the series out. It’s 8-2, Hughes is coming on and here’s a new thread for you to vent.

UPDATE, 11:18 p.m.: This isn’t over by a longshot. Tying run at the plate in the form of the Captain.

UPDATE, 11:24 p.m.: This is how it started last night – a big hit by Damon. …

UPDATE, 11:27 p.m.: Not this time. Tex strikes out to end it. Game 6 on Wednesday in the Bronx.

    ugh. bad bad bad.

  2. CR9 November 2nd, 2009 at 10:42 pm

    Sam

Can you find out any umpires addresses and pass them along.

  3. West Coat Fan November 2nd, 2009 at 10:42 pm

    why did we pull Aceves?
now we’re playing the pitching change game

not that I don’t think we can’t score 6 runs in two innings but if someone would have asked me if I’d take 2 out of 3 in Philly I would have said absolutely!

I just hate looking silly….and we’re starting to

  4. MT. November 2nd, 2009 at 10:42 pm

We’ll win at home. Stay positive — you know the players will. Join them.

  5. rocco November 2nd, 2009 at 10:42 pm

    rather win at home anyway

  6. CR9 November 2nd, 2009 at 10:42 pm

I’d love for to put their addresses in the hands of someone willing to pull a Marcus Camby on them.

  7. Benny Blanco November 2nd, 2009 at 10:43 pm

I’m so tired of the phillies having batting practice.

  8. 100 pitches of fun... November 2nd, 2009 at 10:43 pm

The Yankees can beat pedro. Some of you like 100 pitches need to calm down. You act like it’d the pedro of old.
    ——————–

Yeah because the Yanks really touched him in game 2 right? 2 homeruns threw 6 innings. That was a great display by the offense against a 98 year old.

  9. Golden November 2nd, 2009 at 10:43 pm

Embarrassing embarrassing performance tonight. Horrible all around. We’ll get ‘em on Wednesday at home.

  10. CR9 November 2nd, 2009 at 10:43 pm

    Sam

Obviously, my comment was facetious, not that I am joking, but that you’d never do it and I’d never expect it.

Just remember Phil Coke – when you point – three fingers are aimed back at yourself!

  13. The Future November 2nd, 2009 at 10:43 pm

Okay, Okay, so at the winter meetings we trade every friggin’ one of the “prosepcts” for Halladay. This was a disaster waiting to happen. Unreal.

Girardi is a bonehead. Showalter next year, no more Puke Hughes, Joba Nogood, Ian Shmennedy or even Ajaxjerk, Monterodork, Rominetoenail or anyone else. Enough, enough, enough!!!!

  14. Bryan November 2nd, 2009 at 10:44 pm

Nice of Girardi to blow this game

You are giving the game away with the bottom of that order in a NL ballpark with the freaking pitcher!!

Banking on Andy’s balky shoulder LOVELY

  15. vin November 2nd, 2009 at 10:44 pm

    “why did we pull Aceves?

hope the yankee stadium will be loud for the yanks and will them to win wed..and get it done

  17. michelle b. - November 2nd, 2009 at 10:44 pm

The coke diet never works…this is ridiculous…at least we are getting the bullpen some work tonight. That way when the yankees win, they can tell their grandchildren they once played in a world series.

Phil coke to his grandkid: Hey i played in the world series.
    grandkid: how’d you do grandpa
Phil Coke: umm lets talk about how Mark Teixeira sucked.

  18. Zach in Port Jeff November 2nd, 2009 at 10:44 pm

I feel absolutely confidant in Andy for Game 6. Even if Gaudin does pitch today, we more than likely lose.

I dont feel comfortable with AJ facing the same team twice whether he’s on short-rest or full-rest.

Also, we get another shot at Pedro.

The Yankees did their job in Philly.

  19. GiantsCauseway November 2nd, 2009 at 10:44 pm

Is there a reason Utley hasn’t been knocked down yet? Demuth squeezed Burnett out of the game & the Phillies to game 6 & Girardi does nothing. He is such a wuss.

  20. vin November 2nd, 2009 at 10:45 pm

    “I can’t stand Joe Buck”

He’s much more palatable when the Yankees win.

  21. Conor November 2nd, 2009 at 10:45 pm

Gotta love that even though we’re down 8-2 Joe just keeps churning through the bullpen.

  22. West Coat Fan November 2nd, 2009 at 10:45 pm

    Dearest New York Yankees-

All season long you have been a thrilling team of comebacks, walkoffs and pie. You are now one win away from winning the World Series. It would be quite appropriate if your final win was a massive comeback. Forget chipping away. It’s time for a monster rally! No one is better than you! KILL PHILLY!!!!!! Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

    Sincerely Yours,
    Erica

  25. Rob November 2nd, 2009 at 10:45 pm

I think the Yanks are going to hit pedro hard in game six, but they should have saved AJ for it. This is a mess, the Yanks have put themselves in a situation where Philly is going to feel great about their chances. OUR STARTERS ARE STARTING THE NEXT 2 GAMES ON 3 DAYS REST. Girardi is silly sometimes, I really hate his moves.

  26. CB November 2nd, 2009 at 10:45 pm

It’s truly hard to believe that Girardi was ready to use Phil Coke in a tie game in the bottom of the 9th yesterday rather than throwing either Mo or Robertson.

Thank goodness the yankees scored when they did. Girardi puts coke in that game yesterday and the yankees would have never gotten the chance to hit in the 10th.

  27. sunny615 November 2nd, 2009 at 10:46 pm

game over… back to new york. two days for fans to stew and crucify Girardi.

  28. DDD November 2nd, 2009 at 10:46 pm

Noticing a lot of Bay Area Yankee fans on this site. On the off chance we don’t pull this one out, does anyone know of a true yankee bar in SF? Don’t say Connecticut Yankee. It’s a Sox as you get. Thanks.

  29. JZ November 2nd, 2009 at 10:47 pm

To those who think we should win game 6, which one do you prefer to start, short rest Andy or fully rest AJ?

    LOL

They take out Victorino but leave in Lee. haha

  31. eric November 2nd, 2009 at 10:47 pm

“Phil coke to his grandkid: Hey i played in the world series.
    grandkid: how’d you do grandpa
Phil Coke: umm lets talk about how Mark Teixeira sucked.”

What we need is to find a way to get Coke to pitch to Teixeira in a game.

  36. tampayank November 2nd, 2009 at 10:47 pm

Well at least the bullpen gets tommorow off but I’ll be nervous as hell Wednesday night

  37. stuart a November 2nd, 2009 at 10:48 pm

i cannot keep track of all the mistakes these 2 moron announcers make on a inning by inning basis. hughes can pitch far.. reallly einstein the phils winning after top of the 9th, the game is over.

mccarver should just suck manuels—. the homer sh-t on the telecast is laughable…

victorino got hurt, to f’n bad… the yanks CF is hurt also, almost not a word…………..the only good thing aj little man did tonight is hit victorino… that is the extent of the good things the cement head did tonight.

let’s recap aj with his personal catcher, cannot pitch on the road, and you never know what you get with him…

  38. DT - OPPC member November 2nd, 2009 at 10:48 pm

MPB Johnny Damon = Incredibly Awesome

  40. DVAB November 2nd, 2009 at 10:48 pm

Yes, and there you have it, folks. Whatever idiots were in on the decision to start AJ Burnett on short rest to face the hands down BEST pitcher on the Phillies in the postseason, to GUARANTEE that the Yankees not only go back to New York, but now HAVE to either pitch a complete SLUG ( Gaudin ) or Andy AND CC on short rest ( 3 starts in a ROW, nice ! )in games 6 and 7 ( IF, I mean WHEN it goes 7 games ), will be held accountable for putting the TEAM in a position to blow a 3-1 World Series Lead. I know that it was REAL TOUGH to predict that A) Lee would pitch well and B) HOT AND COLD ALL SEASON AJ would come out cold on 3 days rest after a HOT performance……ROCKET SCIENTISTS were required to figure that out, right ?…Of course, after the game, Girardi and Cashmen ( IF he has the stones to admit he had a hand in the selection ) will say ” We felt AJ gave us the best chance to win tonight” and that is just Horse Hockey !. This was a throw away game that they would have had the SAME CHANCE to win with Gaudin on the mound ( like as in SLIME and NONE ) and will a little STRATEGY ( Oh, my Girardi, you fool, ya ever heard of that ? )….we would have a RESTED AJ in Game 6 AT HOME ! ( Oh, and does Joe have the stats that show AJ stinks on the road ? ) Whoever pitches on Wednesday better putt a wabbit outta his arse and the bats better explode, because the momentum will be SQUARELY in the Phillie dugout for a game 7. What a totally bonehead move that played out tonight….just frickin’ terrible !

  41. stacey November 2nd, 2009 at 10:48 pm

doubt he would pitch game 7 then right

  42. WS November 2nd, 2009 at 10:48 pm

  45. rconn23 November 2nd, 2009 at 10:49 pm

And how is Joe supposed to not churn through the bullpen when your starting pitcher couldn’t go more than two innings.

Place the blame on Burnett, where it should be.

  46. CR9 November 2nd, 2009 at 10:49 pm

Come on GUYS. YOURE RIGHT ERICA. WE CAN DO THIS.

  47. Jeremy November 2nd, 2009 at 10:49 pm

Guys the reason why the Phillies have scored is because of two people: A.J. Burnett, Phil Coke.

We will win this in Game 6 like the ALCS. I know that if Burnett pitched game 6 we would be in trouble.

I would say we should. And be happy. And stop complaining about a bad night. But that’s just me. I know others feel better to get it out of their systems. Just different ways of processing, I guess.

However, since I personally find Monday Morning Quarterbacking to be nothing more than an exercise in second-guessing by those who can’t deal with losses, I will say that Game 6 will be ours – if things continue in this direction – and bid you all a fond good night.

GO YANKEES!!! Thanks for an amazing season and postseason thus far.

  72. gary m November 2nd, 2009 at 10:51 pm

I hate to second guess but it looks like we lost the game, and Burnett. I guess we needed to do what Phillies did and pitch a clear #4 guy to give the top three ample rest. up 3-1 would have been the best time to do that, as down 3-1 or at 2-2 wouldnt make sense. I guess if it were me, I would have started Guadin, send him through their lineup once. Then Aceves through the line up once. Then Robertson through the line up once. Maybe you`d have 6 innings carved out. Still have Burnett, and maybe be better than they were today

  73. DT - OPPC member November 2nd, 2009 at 10:51 pm

  74. WS November 2nd, 2009 at 10:51 pm

    YES!!!!

  76. beetle November 2nd, 2009 at 10:51 pm

The Yanks may lead 3-2, but Philly sure looks like the far better team.

And, no, don’t be “loyal” to players that are giving half-assed efforts, like Cano and Tex. Even if the Yanks win the WS, neither of them contributed anything.

One more thing…why can’y anyone on the Yanks take fat pitches and clobber them like Utley? NY is pretty much punchless unless they get a bloop or bleeder. Give me an Utley over an Arod or Tex any day of the week. That guy is a superstar.

  77. Yankee44 November 2nd, 2009 at 10:51 pm

Well, I predicted this series would go 6, and I also predicted the Yankees would win games 3 and 4. They took care of business, now all they have to do is take care of game 6 and we’re in business.

I hate to see them get their clocks cleaned though. Happened in the 1977 W.S. with the Dodgers too, Yankees won games 3 and 4, but the Dodgers smoked em 10-4 in game 5!

Then they went back to Yankee Stadium, and, well, you know what happened then: Reggie! Reggie! Reggie!

Maybe this time they will be shouting, A-Rod! A-Rod! A-Rod!

Anyway, on to game 6 -

I expected Pedro to pitch well in game 2 and I expect him to pitch well in game 3. At this point, the offense is what it is – it’s not going to be great. I do think the Yankees are a better team, but the Phillies are getting their groove on tonight (to be fair, against the worst of the pen, but still……..) and they are a tough, tough bunch to beat. However, that said, the Yankees are a resilient group – they didn’t win 103 games and get to 3-1 in the WS by being patsies. The mediots will blow this one game out of proportion and try to instill panic in fans, but the Yankees won’t panic. They got 2/3 at least in Philly which is a tremendous job. I worry about Andy on short rest, but really – if they can’t close this out at home, then they deserve whatever criticism they get.

lee threw 115 or so pitches that is the good news.

he was hittable tonight, he only struck out 2 or 3…

Alex has made terrific adjustments from the first two games this series.

His swing looks very, very good again. Much like it was against the twins and angels.

He hits a rope to RF to start the game. Now a laser to LF.

It’s really unfortunate that instead of Posada – the guy who got a huge hit late in the game yesterday – they have Swisher and Cano coming up.

Hopefully they can cycle the line up so they can get Matsui to hit for gardner with men on base.

That would be something. They might need to put pena in the outfield.

I’m peeved, why did girardi put coke in… you want to keep the game close, and now those hr’s count, and they count big. It will be mighty important for Hughes to lockdown right now, 3 runs is quite possible in this park especially considering this: posada, matsui, jeter, damon, tex, arod. That’s what’s coming up next inning. You think they put in madson, or do we get lidge again?

  244. Golden November 2nd, 2009 at 11:05 pm

It’d be nice in a World Series clinching game for a starting pitcher to be able to go more than two innings.

If Burnett could have even put together a servicable start, 6 and 4 runs or so, the Yankees could have had a shot at winning this game Coke would have never gotten on the field.

Can Hughes even have a good inning when the Yanks are losing

  266. PittsburghYankeeFan November 2nd, 2009 at 11:07 pm

OK. No surprises. had the Yankees got a decent start from AJ, they would have won. Had Coke got out the lefties he was supposed to, they would have had a chance.

Cliff Lee came down to Earth. Time for Pedro to do the same.

Gaudin or Bruney? I say Gaudin. Maybe stay with Hughes?

Good news: Lidge or Madsen coming in next inning, and both are gassed.

Bad news: Posada, who has had a crappy WS, is up first.

I like the order they are throwing up there in the top of the ninth. Phils have their work cut out for themselves.

What is it with these pitch patterns?

3-2 right down the middle to Utley.

2-1 right down the middle to Ibanez.

3 straight curveballs to the 8 hitting catcher in the strike zone to give up an 0-2 base hit.

They aren’t being creative out there and mixing it up, and the Phillies hitters are blatantly sitting on pitches. The game is not over, it wasn’t when it was 6-2, it isn’t now at 8-5. You have to go out there and mix it up, you can’t keep feeding them the same pitch.

Alex is playing the complete game right now. He was bad those first two games but identified the problem and fixed it quickly. He was just swinging at bad pitches out of the zone. His swing is back to being real compact and efficient to the ball. He’s gotten one big hit after another and that’s particularly impressive given how bad Tex has been hitting in front of him.

Another huge clutch hit by Posada.

Again – Posada got ahead in the count and that took Madson’s best pitch away.

Leave Tex alone. His glove saved us many a time.

However, I would have been a bit more selective with ARod on deck and I would have worked the count a bit more.

Also, why not run Pena for Matsui and stay out of the DP? Not sure I agree with that piece of strategy.

Incredible fight by this team. Incredible.

If their starting pitcher didn’t implode for 6 runs in two innings they win the game and the World Series.

Jeter hits into DP’s 99.9% of the time in those spots. I don’t know why I didn’t expect it in that spot. Tex is killing them. He is basically useless swinging at anything in sight and batting 3rd. He should of been 3-0 in the count and then Arod could of gotten a chance.

  624. Jeremy November 2nd, 2009 at 11:31 pm

The Phillies are done. The Yankees showed them that they will always fight no matter what. The Phillies don’t have Lee, and there bullpen is shot. The Yankees will win this in 6.

  625. Adam D. November 2nd, 2009 at 11:31 pm

Yanks had a pinch runner his name is Romero Pena, he’s in for Melky. He would have made it to second a lot faster than matsui and maybe slid into the guy, something! Instead my hero grounds out and mr. No knees is running to second. Easy DP, and Mr. I only play with my glove ends the game. I wish we would have lose 8-4. I don’t like when we shoot ourselves in the foot so close to a come back. Whatever win it in the Stadium frick the Phillies and their fans.

Coke isn’t going near a baseball mound until spring. They should tell him to go home, but they won’t since he’s hopefully going to be part of the celebration.

Pettitte needs to go 6 solid innings. That’s it. The bridge to Mo has been restored. If they are up at all, he goes 2. Marte goes 1. The rest can go 1.

This is the way this season of redemption has to end.

Pedro the devil (where is the little guy Nelson, btw) pitching game 6 against Andy, one of the poster boys for the dynasty teams. Three days rest? You can rest all season.

No more AJ theatrics (does he need a sports psychologist?).

    No more Posada/Molina BS.

The Philles scored 8 runs in 3 innings against 2 guys they will never see again this series. And zero runs in 6 innings against guys they might. 650. uncle tito November 2nd, 2009 at 11:39 pm

Anytime there’s a runner at 1st with less than 2 outs, Jeter will GIDP. Thats why they fliped-floped him with Damon.

Truth is he hasnt been clutch in a while. He struck out in the 9th yesterday to make the 2nd out before Damon had that at bat.

He has always been a complementary player, not a guy who can carry a team like Alex.

  651. girardi's IQ is below 65 November 2nd, 2009 at 11:39 pm

i know the yankees are in the ws – but i dont care – girardi is a PATHETIC manager, and if it wasn’t for arod, mo, and cc, the yanks would have almost definitely lost in the 1st round, and this would be a different conversation….i still think the yanks will win, but this postseason has made me seriously question girardi’s ability as a manager – bottom line is he is a very, very stupid person – and he brings NOTHING to the table. thank God the yankees have been able to overcome his stupidity and worthlessness with their overwhelming talent – but thats the only reason, girardi deserves no credit and he should not be the manager of the new york yankees

This game was a free pass. At least it wasn’t won or lost with an in game mistake.

The Phillies were extremely lucky to escape tonight. They know it. Did you see the bench towards the end of the game?

We’ll know pretty quickly if Andy has it. If not, same game plan as tonight.

Time to stuff it right down Pedro’s throat. Who’s your daddy?

Rob, if only I had the power to do so I would BAN you from watching the rest of the series. Jeter not only has the highest batting average during this series, his play has been spectacular.

There were many at bats during this game when anyone could have come up with a key hit. It is not right to call out a player for one AB, one pitch or error. Everyone contributes (or not) to the game.

An attitude like yours is deplorable.

Don’t ever, ever bad-mouth Jeter again.

AND to you TEX and CANO haters, may the bed bugs bite you all night.

PittsburghYFan: I saw that too, the players in the Phillie dugout were not looking like they were going to win the game. They did luck out though by having Lee pitch tonight.

The Yankees will win in in YS so all fans there can celebrate. For those of us not in the NY area – we can just make a lot of joyous noise. Go Yankees.

    Triple Short Of A Cycle,

-Game 4 against the Tigers (I think 3 years ago??). A homer, even though they lost bigtime.
-Game 4, 2001 a homerun against Zito, which spoiled Zito
-Nov 10th, 2000 against the Rangers, had a two-run homer in the eighth tied the game for the Yankees. He also had a lot of RBI’s that day.

    I tried &
Thats some of what I came up with. But stating that he’s not clutch is an ‘understatement” In the past his PO numbers weren’t the best, but if you would include the actual season I can make a hug list of his clutch hits.

Tex should wait on the changeup. And we should’ve had Lee out an inning earlier.

Great commentary by Ken Singleton on YES postgame – he said game 6 will be a interesting from a pitching standpoint as to which pitching staff can survive game 6 and come away with a win. Kay said it will come down to which bullpen will be better. He doesn’t think either Andy or Pedro will be able to go deep into the game, and the only trustworthy reliever in either pen is Mo.

Betsy, you may be right that at this point, this is what the Yankees offense is. We can only hope that being back at home with a real lineup will help and some of the slumping guys perk up. The Yankees may have to slug their way to #27.

Haters: Enough with the “gutless” and “choker” stuff. Tex is having trouble hitting. He’s not choking, and he certainly hasn’t taken it out onto the field. Maybe Kevin Long can help him come around, maybe not. Either way, Tex is a great player having a rough postseason on offense, period. AJ had a bad start at about the worst possible time. He was great in game 2. End of story. He’s great sometimes and terrible at others. I’ll take it – he’s a standup guy, a great teammate, and the upside far outweighs the downside IMHO.

Rob: Jeter? Really? You remind me of the people who booed Mo when he blew two saves against the Red Sox in the first home games of 2005. Just so wrong.
