Andy Pettitte will take the ball on short rest tonight in the Bronx as the Yankees look to cash in their second opportunity at clinching the World Series. Josh Thomson has the story.

The pitching on both sides has started to fall apart, especially in the bullpens, Rick Carpiniello writes.

Mark Teixeira has been struggling, but is determined not to let negativity creep in, Chad Jennings writes.

And Joe Girardi conceded that he’ll turn to Mariano Rivera for whatever is needed at this point, with Rivera he could even go three innings if the situation required it. The notebook also has items on Shane Victorino, Brett Gardner and the Yankees lineup.

    Vincente Padilla pulled a Plaxico:

“Vicente Padilla, who revived his career in the Dodgers’ run to the National League Championship Series, was treated for a minor self-inflicted gunshot wound in his right leg at a hospital in his native Nicaragua on Tuesday”

Pedro will also be starting on shorter rest than what he is used to as well, I think it will come down to a battle of the bullpens. Also, being the 2nd game he has pitched, Pedro wont fool as many batters this time.

“Also, being the 2nd game he has pitched, Pedro wont fool as many batters this time.”

I think that will prove to be a key factor tonight. We’ve seen all year how much better this lineup is the second time through the order. I think see Pedro in consecutive starts will provide a similar effect–especially considering his style of pitching. Unless Pettitte is completely gassed, I feel pretty good about the Yankees clinching it tonight.

I agree with you, if Gardner is able to bunt or even fake the bunt ocassionally it will draw the infield in openning up better hitting lanes especially if he stays away from fly balls. Even better if there is already someone on base.

  10. randy l. November 4th, 2009 at 9:11 am

gb7 last night pointed out that pettitte handled werth, utley , and ibanez well in his last start.

he also said that werth concerned him.

    i’m agreeing on these thoughts.

let andy go after utley, but expand the strike zone to werth and don’t be afraid of going in to him to the point if he gets hit he gets hit.

the yankees can’t pitch around werth and utley both, so in this game you have to pick your poison .

check out the box score to get an idea of how andy did against the phillies in his last game. i think it gives confidence:

  11. Paco Dooley November 4th, 2009 at 9:11 am

The key is not how Pettitte pitches in my mind, it’s how Pedro pitches. If Andy is off, he’ll still probably give a decent 5 innings or so (even if that is 5 innings with 3 ER). But Pedro could be either spectacular (7 innings, 1 or 2 runs), or a total bust (5 innings, 5 runs).

  12. Fran (the original) and OPPC member November 4th, 2009 at 9:12 am

Put me in the group that is excited about tonight but a little nervous as well. I do think that the Yanks will get it done tonight. Think it will come down to the bullpens and the Yankees bullpen has the best weapon there is – Mariano. He is well rested and can pitch multiple innings.

Pedro is still a crafty pitcher, and almost always pitches tough against NY. I don’t think the Yanks will tank him for granted. The odds would certainly favor a battle of the bullpens today. I like our pen much better.

I am not thinking they will take Pedro for granted, just thinking they will hit better against him this time.

Going to bed last night at 11:30 instead of 1am made a huge difference in my state of well being.

Anyone else feeling all nice and refreshed after a baseball free night?

  16. Doreen November 4th, 2009 at 9:16 am

It’s really no wonder if the pitching staffs of both teams are beginning to show a little wear and tear. The playoff system is flawed in baseball.

Too many layers and too many days off.

By the time it’s over, it’s no longer about the best team, but the team who can survive the inherent obstacles.

The game is played for the long haul over the course of the season – 162 games. And then the entire strategy of the game changes, routines are interrupted and frankly, adrenaline or no adrenaline, guys are playing on the fumes of the adrenaline.

I don’t know what the answer is. But long ago, before divisional playoffs and wild card playoffs, when the season ended and the best team in each league immediately met in the WS, the season was shorter to begin with. How much sense does it make to have the season be longer AND the playoffs be longer?

I know it will always come down to money. But it seems to me, if they’re determined to have 2 rounds of playoffs before the WS, then something has to give. The season needs to be 10 games shorter – or at the very least, 8 games shorter, which would bring it back to what it was originally, 154 games. And extraneous off days need to be cut.

  17. Patrick from CT November 4th, 2009 at 9:17 am

Look for a high scoring game tonight.
Mo on the mound in the 8th with a 2 run lead would be nice.

  21. Ramey November 4th, 2009 at 9:19 am

if the Yankees could score 5 runs off Lee seeing him the 2nd time in the series, we can definitely score enough off Pedro. It’s going to come down to who comes through; Park, Happ, Madson, Lidge or Joba, Marte, Hughes and Mo….Odds point in the favor of #42

Id like to see Gardner be more agressive up at the plate. He always seems to wait til he has 2 strikes on him before swinging, often taking pitches right in the strike zone, cause pitchers know he wants to walk. He needs to go up there and be more agressive, instead of taking 2 strikes and then flailing at the pitch to put the bat on the ball. Iknow he’s not a power hitter, but he has hit some hard line drives when agressive.

Too many layers and too many days off.”

    doreen-

that plus the late starts to games and the sleep deprivation east coast is bad for the game.

i’m hoping that at some point that fox, tbs, and whatever else junk tv network is cut out of the process. with the ability to stream directly to fans i see no reason for these middlemen who dictate much of the process.

teams should be able to have their own broadcasters broadcasting. we should be able to watch on yes any game we want including the postseason.

hopefully technology gets rid of these network dinosaurs .

  47. GGBG (Magic Number: reset to 1) November 4th, 2009 at 9:33 am

I heard it said on Francessa’s show yesterday that the first half of the WS favors the pitchers and the second half favors the hitters. I don’t know how the stats for that look historically but it sounds right to me.

The Phillies have a nice lineup but in our park, I like our hitters better.

  48. Doreen November 4th, 2009 at 9:35 am

    randy l -

    I sure hope so. :(

Baseball has allowed itself to be thrown to the bottom of the sports broadcasting scrap heap. It’s a travesty and it’s embarrassing.

This is not Australian Football (back in the early days of ESPN, remember?) This is the MLB PLAYOFFS. It’s the WORLD SERIES. Baseball should DEMAND better scheduling.

They talk about no instant replay because they want to preserve the purity of the game. And then they do all they can to disrupt the game to make a few bucks. I wonder if a new commissioner will be any different?

  49. Bill from NJ November 4th, 2009 at 9:35 am

“Playoff baseball as it is right now is obviously flawed, it doesn’t play like the regular season.”

I feel the same way; however, this design does force you to have a well-rounded team. In order to survive the grueling regular season a team must have quality depth. Then to consistently win short series a team must have a core of impact players–especially on the pitching staff. So I’m not as opposed to the current playoff format, but I pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to say that if CC–hadn’t signed with the Yankees–been bought by the Yankees.

Not sure how that chick with the martian voice got the job – unless their objective was to alienate everyone and drive them over the edge.

The Yankees need to fix this for next year. The relentless onslaught of this crap, at full volume, compromises the ballpark experience – especially if you’re a season ticket holder who has to endure it every game.

So I am in conflict – do I go early and see the boys for BP, or stay away to save my sanity?

it would be so much more enjoyable to listen to our own broadcasters, who actually know our team, and don’t just throw out the usual lines about payroll, HRs flying out of the stadium, empty seats etc etc. Someone suggested having a broadcaster from each team, that would be good as well.
Also, why not some day games on the weekends, or 7 pm starts on the week days. How is the younger generation supposed to get excited about baseball when they can’t watch a whole game…not to mention those of us who get up early for work.

    patrick-

after digesting the sting of that last loss, i’m feeling good about the yankee’s chances tonight.

i personally am glad they’re at this point trying to win #27 with the old guard front and center.

the best thing about pitching burnett on three days rest was giving him a chance to do his thing, but getting him off the table if he didn’t. he’s so much of a coin flip that i would not want him pitching today even if he had a week’s rest.

pettitte and sabathia with posada in there both games against a reconditioned pedro martinez and emotionally conflicted cole hamels make a nice match up for the yankees.

i expect tonight to be a tough game, but i think the yankees are in good position to outlast the phillies.

andy doesn’t have to be perfect. he just needs to be better than pedro.

martinez is also pitching on 4 days rest for the first time since sept 13.

he was on 12 days rest in his last game, 13 days rest,10 days rest, 5 days rest, and finally 4 days rest on sept 13th.

in short , 4 days rest for pedro is pitching on really short rest for him .

i would not be surprised to see him go 4 innings or less.

  98. JasonR November 4th, 2009 at 10:00 am

One thing that makes me feel good about Cano is that he did stay late yesterday to take extra batting practice. Kevin Long set up a screen on the outside edge of the plate so the hitter has to stay inside the ball.

He still has the worst body language on the team, but it’s not like he doesn’t care. Hopefully that adjustment pays off tonight.

    upstate kate-

they are losing much of a whole generation by not having the world series build up to a dramatic rapid conclusion at a time that gets kids, old folks, and working people watching( and watching together).

everyone here is more or less guaranteeing that pedro will fall apart tonight.. Guess what, he’s pitching in one of the biggest games in his life and he’s pitching for a contract.. he’s a crafty pitcher and he can certainly outwit the bottom of the order.. Also, the first sign of trouble, Manuel is going to go to Blanton or Happ.. Its a do or die game for them and hence Manuel will not let Pedro take a pounding.. say if its 2-0 with 1 or 2 men on base in the 2nd inning, he will go to another pitcher.. Tricky situation for the yanks in the same scenario as to whether you would bring in Gaudin in such a situation or not..

I just hope that the yanks stay patient and take their walks.. A couple of solo homeruns against Pedro won’t do the job for them this time.. need to use the speed of jeter, damon, arod and GGBG tonight..

I like Pettitte over Pedro tonight. All we need from Andy is 6ip. Then Marte, Joba, Mo. If we have the lead at the end of the 7th inning, then Mo will be in for 8-9. Pedro will out of the game by the 5th inning.

  104. PittsburghYankeeFan November 4th, 2009 at 10:03 am

What? Nobody likes seeing the Black Taco commercial for the 50th time? Trailers for Ninja Assassin for the 80th time?

It’s an interesting dynamic. Fox paid billions, which are shared by all of the clubs. This allows player salaries to be so high. Clubs like the Yankees have their own regional networks, which give them even more money.

With the rise of TV over the internet, you don’t really need Fox anymore. MLB, or the regional networks of the clubs, could handle the broadcast over cable, satellite, or the Internet.

The problem is where do you replace all the $$$ that go to small market clubs?

    That is really the issue.

    PittsburghYankeeFan -

Couldn’t the regional networks, like YES, have to pay for the rights to the games just like the other networks do? And couldn’t they divide the proceeds in a similar manner?

I do think one of the major issues is that not everyone has access to YES (if its the Yankees), MLB tv, or wants to pay for access through their computers. Also, aren’t there some teams that are not part of a regional network, so then, who’s responsible for their broadcasts – that would have to be given to a national outlet.

Fox, TBS, ESPN, what they have going for them is the ability to broadcast to the largest reachable audience.

It’s definitely a conundrum. Not everyone is going to be happy in whatever scenario you have.

But surely, surely, even if they have to stick with the same broadcasting companies, they can negotiate ONE day game for the World Series, can’t they?

I miss the shared experience of listening to a day game in school. Nowadays, I don’t know if they’d allow it anyway, though.

And the other thing is, because the games are late, because people work the next day, or are just too plain too old/tired to be driving home from someone else’s house at 1 a.m., I suspect most are like me – not able to watch with a group of people. Not even one game. If they had one day game, you could conceivably get home at a decent hour, or send your guests home before they fell asleep on your sofa (or in your closet!).

Anyway, enough of that. Tonight’s gonna be a good night. Tonight’s gonna be a good, good night! (Get ready for the Showdown!!!)

Not everyone in the country gets YES, and MLB doesn’t want to cannibalize the advertising revenue it gets from a national broadcast by televising the games on three different stations.

My parents were visiting for a good deal of the playoffs, and my brother and his wife from California. They think I’m certifiable. What with my visits to the closet and all.

(The closet business started when they played in Anaheim – it was the only place I could go and not hear the thundersticks with the tv on normal volume.)

“I am just tired of all the other people that do. Cano deserves a lot more respect than he gets on this board. Do people even realize that his and Jeter’s 200+ regular season hits were historic? No two middle infielders had ever accomplished that feat (at least not in the last 100 or so years)”

Tino, O’Neill and Brosius had their struggles also, but no one really cares 10 years later. It all comes down to winning. If we win, all will be forgiven and no one will remember that Robbie had a tough postseason, we’ll only remember that he was one of the top 2nd basemen in the league and part of arguably the greatest Yankee infield ever.

Are you still baking dessets in honor of the Yankee starters???

I think Pettitte would appreciate those cookies tonight….

I am calling it now…. Eric Hinske has a HUGE HR tonight, and the Yanks prevail.
    ==========================================================

that would insinuate either someone gets hurt – or its a close game in the late innings and hinske is pinch hitting for gardner…

i’d prefer my take that tex hits a 3 run homerun – preferably early (like the 1st or 3rd inning) and the yankees go on to win 10 – 4…

The best I can do for Yankee happiness today, seeing I am somewhat far away from the center of activity, is to drive around and listen to WEEI. Randy, I don’t know if you have been listening to them at all but they are absolutely apoplectic about tonight’s game. They are doing all but performing a Yankee exorcism in hopes that the Phillies beat us in the next two games.

I have to say that if the situation were reversed, I would find a way do the exorcism!!! So I am just loving the RSN angst.

    :)

Also feeling very confident about tonight’s game. It’s another glorious New England fall day. Definitely a nice day for a ride in the country with WEEI as my companion!

Swisher may not exactly be a defensive wizard, but Hinkse is even worse. Giradri values defense way too much. I can’t see him giving Hinske the start

  155. stanzy November 4th, 2009 at 10:47 am

randy l. – Pedro is on 5 days rest, not 4. But still, I can’t seem him dominating anyone, tonight. He is a good and smart pitcher, but, especially now that Johnny and Alex seem to be back on, the Yankees lineup should be able to get to him.

For the Phils to win, I think Pedro has to be excellent. For the Yanks to win, I think Andy just has to be good. Odds are better that Andy is at least good than that Pedro is excellent.

  156. Doreen November 4th, 2009 at 10:47 am

Andy didn’t seem to like my cookies in his honor when he pitched in Anaheim.

I kind of decided the cookies weren’t really helping. They weren’t necessarily hurting, but they weren’t helping. (But I still have some CC and AJ dough in the freezer, in case of emergency. Guess I should have used the AJ dough on Monday :( .

Ready, refreshed and rested. Also, dusting off my favorite Yankee shirt–celebrating 1961. Got to win tonight or else I will really be nervous. Tex, lay off Pedro’s change up or make him get it elevated as you did off him last time.
Today, is my wife’s birthday and, of couuse, that means dinner out. The game starts at 6:57 in my area. Can you say let’s eat quickly and sing happy birthday with the main course?

  159. YankeeRay November 4th, 2009 at 10:50 am

I’m still having a hard time with game 5 and Jeters at bat.
It was a game that I had a hard tme watching and actually thought after we got it back to 8-5 that it would be weird if we rallied and won it, as it just didn’t feel right.
Then all of a sudden Jeter is in a position where if he gets a hit I think we win the game. He goes 2-0 and I’m starting to feel good. I’m thinking that maybe he should take the next pitch but that maybe it would be a great pitch to hit. Turns out the 2-0 pitch was a perfect pitch to drive to right and the 2-1 pitch was in on his hands and he grounds into DP like he of the does on that inside pitch.
If we don’t win I will look at that moment and wonder what could have been.
Hopefully tonight we just blow them out as I don’t want a game 7.

LOL. Yeah, you should definitely stay away from pizza. I’ve got it covered :)

  162. sab November 4th, 2009 at 10:56 am

if i had to be stuck on a desert island for 5 years and could only take 1 type of food it would be pizza….

think about it – its good hot or cold – it pretty much can have all of the RDA of food groups (yes even fruit – pineapple chunks) you technuically don’t need any utensil or plate to eat it (its portable!! unlike soup or chinese food)- and its yummy….

AEROFANATIC – Ok i’ll compromise with you – hinske pinch hits for gardner in the 8th inning due to gardner making an amazing catch at the wall but getting hurt – the yankees are up 9-4 at the time and hinske’s HR makes it 10-4 – thus satisfying both our predictions… in other words, unfortunately for you, i don’t think girardi puts hinske in the starting lineup tonight…if swisher sits (which i don’t think he will) i think it’ll be hairston in right…

I’ve been seething since the 1st inning of Game 5. I really can’t handle all of this, I’m praying that the Yanks win tonight. I hope Pettitte goes the distance with at least 7 strong inning. On the offensive end, I hope the batters have figured out Pedro. We need to score early, and many many runs!

Don’t let the opponent breathe! You can’t let the Phillies get their swings going. You can’t! This is nerve wracking!

    11-6 Yankees!

  167. AEROFANATIC November 4th, 2009 at 11:02 am

In 135 career games in RF, Eric Hinske has made a grand total of ONE ERROR.
In 327 career games in RF, Nick Swisher has made a grand total of EIGHT ERRORS.

Based on this, you aren’t losing much defensively in RF starting Hinske over Swisher.

Based on the pitching matchup, Hinske hit Pedro the 3rd best on our squad, to a clip of .267. Hairston hits him best, however with Gardner already in CF…you need more pop.

That pop is Hinske. Will Girardi start him over Swisher tonight, and keep Swisher as a PH to come in against the Philly relief core? Time will tell…

starbucks would have no chance of getting in here though i wouldn’t mind myself if they did. what this town has is a place that roasts beans fresh daily and sells them daily to all the restaurants so coffee is pretty good here.

i lived in manahttan beach and hermosa in the late 60′s and went to el camino. lived on the strand . did you see the movie tequila sunrise ? mel gison’s house was where we lived on the strand. the michelle pheiffer hot tub scene used to be where the entrance was to the lower level we ( about ten friends) lived in.

even though it was the height of the counter culture , i never missed reading the box scores in the la times or daily breeze.

tequila sunrise is one of my favorite movies…basically because it was filmed in the south bay area…i used to live there in the early/mid 90′s so i’m sure things were a bit different back when you were there (but probably not much different)….but its so interesting that you lived in that house….wow small world…..

  170. GiantsCauseway November 4th, 2009 at 11:20 am

Idiot Joe West will be behind the plate. He will want to be on stage. I look for him to squeeze both pitchers. Yankees have to lay of Pedro’s change, disrupt his rhythm. Tex has to be patient, Cano has to stop being a rally killer, go to left field. Gardner has to think about bunting his way on & running at every chance. Time to man-up & throw Utley fastballs inside, if they hit him good. Pitch to Jimmy The Human Slump Rollins
