World Series Game 6: Phillies at Yankees (III)

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Nov 04, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

UPDATE, 10:08 p.m.: It’s 7-1 Yankees with Pettitte – hearing his named chanted as he goes into the wind – pitching to Chase Utley. Let’s get a new thread going.

UPDATE, 10:11 p.m.: Girardi is staying with Pettitte after Ryan Howard hits a first-row homer. It’s 7-3 now.

UPDATE, 10:25 p.m.: Nice moment for Pettitte when he came out of the game. Big ovation, tip of the cap and a wave. If this is it for Pettitte, it’s a hell of a way to go out. He could be the clinching pitcher for this year’s AL East title, ALDS, ALCS and World Series. Not bad.

UPDATE, 10:39 p.m.: Think Joba is amped up? He just threw one that one-hopped the backstop.

UPDATE, 10:45 p.m.: Damaso Marte has been great since the first round but there’s no spot bigger than this one. Two on, two out, Utley up with one swing to make it a one-run game.

UPDATE 10:51 p.m.: Huge, huge strikeout for Marte. Six outs to go. Marte for Howard and then go to Mo?

UPDATE, 10:53 p.m.: Best “God Bless America” of the year from Kelli O’Hara. The 50,315 fans here loved it.

UPDATE, 11:15 p.m.: Nothing better than the bars of “Enter Sandman” on a cold night with flashbulbs popping everywhere. I’ve got to finish up about 15 things for the newspaper but don’t go anywhere. The Yankees are five outs away.

And West gives Philly an extra run.

  17. Paco Dooley November 4th, 2009 at 10:11 pm

I hope the likes of Mike Francesa and his diatribe over using Pettitte on short rest are feeling properly deflated as Pettitte passed the 5 inning mark with only 2 ERs. I believe he also said that Pedro would pitch well. It’s also nice to be right since I predicted a game like this in an earlier thread!

  18. Carl November 4th, 2009 at 10:11 pm

    Come on Andy 2 more

  73. Razor Ray November 4th, 2009 at 10:15 pm

if that ends up being his last game as a yankee(or at all) thats a pretty great way to go out

  74. Jeremy November 4th, 2009 at 10:15 pm

We need Mo for the 8th. Joba and Marte need to hold the Phillies for an inning.

  75. vin November 4th, 2009 at 10:15 pm

This was shaping up to be the biggest inning of the game for the last couple innings now.

Andy’s control was starting to waver, the middle of the lineup was due.

Time for Joba to re-ignite the “Joba to the BP talks.” Have to get Feliz. Leave 8-9-1 for next inning.

  76. Nick in SF in Larkspur November 4th, 2009 at 10:16 pm

We got this good job yanks!

  78. GreenBeret7 November 4th, 2009 at 10:16 pm

Pettitte gives them 5.1 innings very good balls. One mistake and then the final out of the year for him. Chamberlain needs to strand this runner, so the Yanks can tack on a few more runs. This score won’t end at 7-3.

  79. JoeMama November 4th, 2009 at 10:16 pm

Great outing for Pettitte couldn’t ask for much more than that

  80. vin November 4th, 2009 at 10:16 pm

Joe Buck is horrible for planet Earth.

  81. jaybird November 4th, 2009 at 10:16 pm

No time for a Joba meltdown. Just think his Mom will be able to watch this Yankee Classic for many, many, many, years to come.

  82. Andreas November 4th, 2009 at 10:16 pm

Pettitte did better than I think most people expected and luckily the offense is working. I’m cautiously optimistic now.

  83. Angel - A tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing November 4th, 2009 at 10:17 pm

    Let’s go, Joba.

  84. JoeT 28 in 10!! November 4th, 2009 at 10:17 pm

I hate when FOX cuts to commercial so quick. Can we please enjoy Andy Pettitte coming off of the field and getting congratulations from his teammates …. possibly a curtain call in what could be his last time pitching as a Yankee.

It really got me when they cut to commercial when Mo was coming in during the all-star game and everyone was going INSANE after destroying Paplebum.

  85. DT - OPPC member November 4th, 2009 at 10:17 pm

the Phillies won’t go without a fight.
    Shut them down.
    Score more Yankee runs too.

  86. Nick D. November 4th, 2009 at 10:17 pm

    Oh boy.

This bullpen is gunna give me an ulcer.

But I still believe in them.

    LETS GO YANKS!!!!

  87. Pepitone November 4th, 2009 at 10:17 pm

Like I said, Andy Pettitte is a warrior, he was running on fumes, and still gave them what they wanted.

If Joba gives up a HR, I’m going through this screen and choking him with my bare hands.

  88. Gardner in CF November 4th, 2009 at 10:17 pm

I wish those chants were still going…

  89. CB November 4th, 2009 at 10:17 pm

Andy did his job tonight and then some.

The whole key with him going on short rest is that the team really only needed 5 innings from him and the lead.

With Mo available for 2 innings they just needed Andy to get them through 5 with the lead.

    And he did exactly that.

He emptied the tank and gave the team what he had. And the offense did it’s job.

The bull pen just needs to be ok for 1 1/3 innings and that’s the game before it gets to Mo.

  90. djsunyc November 4th, 2009 at 10:17 pm

    good challenge for joba here…

Joba please don’t throw a get me over fastball. Feliz is a fastball hitter.

  93. Yanks_Fan November 4th, 2009 at 10:17 pm

Girardi has really become a complete good manager. He knows he overmanaged early and it cost his team a few wins. He did the right thing leaving Andy there to finish the inning and did the right thing to take him out after the double. I feel comfortable with him as manager.

Great job from our warrior Andy Pettitte.

  129. Gary November 4th, 2009 at 10:21 pm

That pitch to Howard was a bad break, it was moving away but started just too far inside. A bit more over the middle and it would have been a K.

And the one slider he threw was a waste pitch low and out of the zone.

    He completely overpowered Feliz.

He just needs to stop thinking and listen to the catcher.

  132. Gardner in CF November 4th, 2009 at 10:21 pm

Big inning here. The Phillies have nothing in their pen that can stop this lineup.

the crowd sounds very loud to me. I don’t know what people are complaining about.

    great work, Joba!

One more inning from him, and then to Mo.

and please, re-sign Hideki! I think he’s a better hitter than Johnny at this point.

  136. randy l. November 4th, 2009 at 10:21 pm

a few sliders mixed in are fine.

just don’t live off of them.

joba needs to command the fastball and use the slider when it’s not so predictable.

when he shakes off a pitch , what does he think the hitter thinks is coming ?

  137. lets go yankees (formerly lets go twins) November 4th, 2009 at 10:21 pm

Isn’t it surreal seeing the grey haired Pettite being a warrior on 3 days rest!?!

He was just a 2nd year phenom in ’96

    Amazing.

I love these guys. Jeter, Petitte, Posada, Mo…they define my life as a Yankee fan.

    I’m 21 now…I was 8 when I started really following baseball…that was in ’96

I can’t even imagine the Yankees without these guys.

Get out of the seventh unscathed, and they will start smelling it.

Then Buck and McCarver will start to talk about how this season was a referendum on Joe Girardi, and how he came through with a great job of managing this “team of wealth.”

Then they will talk about Matsu, and whether or not he, or Damon will be coming back.

Then they will discuss the redemption of A-Rod.

Then they will discuss the potentially last year of Andy Pettitte.

Gardner has the worst bunting technique of anybody on the team except for Damon. That’s supposed to be part of his game and he’s brutal at it. If he can’t bunt, he’ll never get above #4 outfielder and pinch runner.

I will say one thing about that guy and then i wont talk about free agency till the off season.

As an Athletics season ticket holder this yr, Matt Holliday needs to stay in the national league. He absolutely got dominated by the A.L. pitchers. Granted the A’s didnt really have support around him, he did hit in front of giambi for a while and behind Suzuki, who is a pretty good hitting catcher.

For me though, PLEASE NO HOLLIDAY!

DT – OPPC member November 4th, 2009 at 10:33 pm

I wonder if the reason Gardner doesn’t bunt is he is worried about getting hit on the thumb?

I have a feeling that has something to do with why he hasn’t been swinging either… I’m not just saying that to make excuses for him, he’s looked awful at the plate but he was never this bad… but that must be why he didn’t get very many starts when he returned from the DL compared to before he got hurt. But it must have something to do with it, because other teams know that he won’t swing and he’s watching a lot of hittable pitches go by. I can’t imagine he completely forgot how to swing a bat since he got hurt.

  334. Yankee44 November 4th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

  337. GreenBeret7 November 4th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

Gardner doesn’t even need to be a great, Rizzuto/Carew type bunter….just good. He has no desire to bunt and gives a half-hearted effort. He fancies himself as a big time hitter, and he’s not. He doesn’t need to have a ton of at bats to be able to lay a bunt down, so, you can stop that crap, now..

  338. Pepitone November 4th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

I though Cashman was silly for giving Marte that contract. As it turns out, I was silly for doubting Cashman.

  540. Rudy November 4th, 2009 at 10:53 pm

Marte can never throw another pitch again and he was worth his 3 year extension.

  541. KO November 4th, 2009 at 10:53 pm

How clutch has Marte been? Can’t say enough about this guy. 11 straight outs in the playoffs. and going in he was a huge question mark. he has stepped up in a really big way. imagine if we were relying on Phil Coke for all these outs against lefties late in games

  546. Joe from Long Island November 4th, 2009 at 10:53 pm

I don’t think Joba was horrible. Yeah, the walk hurt a lot, no doubt. But he got some outs and didn’t get hammered. Yeah, he needs to work this offseason, and learn how to command and pitch better. But he didn’t bomb out there. He did enough, not as much as we might want, but he did enough. Just my opinion.

Correct me if my memory failes me, but wasn’t Joba’s command when he first came up to the majors terrific? He’s all over the place now AND his velocity is down.

Unless he’s out of options, I’d send him down to the minors at the start of the season and have him go back to work as a starter…again. Then, bring him and up and have him continue as a starter.

Otherwise — just trade him and get something of value. I honestly am tired of his act. And don’t tell me he’s still “young” — there are great, mature pitchers out there younger than Joba. Joba’s problems are in his attitude and in his head.

What a turnaround……seriously, this guy has saved us given the state of most of our pen. looking forward to posada batting righty again. Would almost rather see Molina hit for him and finish the game behind the plate.
I’m not a big fan of Posdaa at this point.
Next year he catches and when he’s not catching he sits. His contract is now officially a bad 4 year deal. His agent did a good job of scaring us by talking to Mets. It should have been a 3 year deal.
    *****************************************

This team is on the brink of possibly winning a World Series. A World Series that Posada made some fairly decent contributions to. Is this really necessary, given that? Sheesh.

Guess not. Cano hasn’t been good in the WS, like a lot of others, but, he had some big run producing hits against the angels with the 2 triples and double. Everybody has contributed to wins in the post season this year, and that’s what makes a winning team.

But Austin has eclipsed Tabata in being closer to his goal of full potential.

“what reliable relief pitchers did he have? none…he was doomed when pedro did not have it?”

Didn’t say he had any reliable relievers.

Nonetheless not all of his relief pitchers are equal.

And in the biggest spot in the game – at the point in the game where it was very clear that the yankees score anymore runs the game is over Manuel was content to let his season end on the arm of Happ.

Madson isn’t Mo. Not close. But there is no question he is much, much better than Happ. And matsui isn’t phased against left handed pitchers. And with his plus change you could at least see Madson giving Matsui some trouble.

So instead of using his best pitcher to keep the game in striking distance Manuel brings him in for the two lowest leverage outs of the entire game.

    Just nonsensical.

Predicted ESPN article: 200 billion, Old, Purchased Pitching, Bam Box, 2004, etc. Suck it ESPN! 4 core players from 15 years ago and Arod!

    A YEAR OF PIES

Pretty amazing in the modern era. To do it with 3 starters, a un-hittable reliever and with only half the team hitting. You could give the MVP to any of about 5 guys and not have a strong argument.

    Congratulations you guys!

I tip my hat to the Yankee team and all their fans. You had an outstanding season.

Many thanks, Ray. You’re always a class act.

You know, it’s still not too late to be a part of the evil Empire. You’d be most welcome.

Of course, you realize that joining up with the Empire this late, you wouldn’t get the big, diamond encrusted Championship ring that the rest of us get, but, you will get a smaller version.
