World Series Game 6: Phillies at Yankees (III)
UPDATE, 10:08 p.m.: It’s 7-1 Yankees with Pettitte – hearing his named chanted as he goes into the wind – pitching to Chase Utley. Let’s get a new thread going.
UPDATE, 10:11 p.m.: Girardi is staying with Pettitte after Ryan Howard hits a first-row homer. It’s 7-3 now.
UPDATE, 10:25 p.m.: Nice moment for Pettitte when he came out of the game. Big ovation, tip of the cap and a wave. If this is it for Pettitte, it’s a hell of a way to go out. He could be the clinching pitcher for this year’s AL East title, ALDS, ALCS and World Series. Not bad.
UPDATE, 10:39 p.m.: Think Joba is amped up? He just threw one that one-hopped the backstop.
UPDATE, 10:45 p.m.: Damaso Marte has been great since the first round but there’s no spot bigger than this one. Two on, two out, Utley up with one swing to make it a one-run game.
UPDATE 10:51 p.m.: Huge, huge strikeout for Marte. Six outs to go. Marte for Howard and then go to Mo?
UPDATE, 10:53 p.m.: Best “God Bless America” of the year from Kelli O’Hara. The 50,315 fans here loved it.
UPDATE, 11:15 p.m.: Nothing better than the bars of “Enter Sandman” on a cold night with flashbulbs popping everywhere. I’ve got to finish up about 15 things for the newspaper but don’t go anywhere. The Yankees are five outs away.

Loving the Andy chants
Keep Howard down.
dammit
So cheap
seriously…this can never be easy…
NOW Howard decides to hit.
ARGH!
Game 6 Buck/McCarver “hammered” count: 2
Dammit.
Dear Ryan Howard,
thanks for showing up mate, too little to late.
Boom Outta here!
come on andy…let’s get out of this…
That’s not how I wanted to see Howard end his drought.
Dammit.
27!
27!
27!
27!
27!
Damn. Not a killer HR, but I was hoping Andy would hold it.
And West gives Philly an extra run.
I hope the likes of Mike Francesa and his diatribe over using Pettitte on short rest are feeling properly deflated as Pettitte passed the 5 inning mark with only 2 ERs. I believe he also said that Pedro would pitch well. It’s also nice to be right since I predicted a game like this in an earlier thread!
Come on Andy 2 more
way to show a replay when the crowd is rocking that place
Oh well
Let’s go Andy!!! Get out of the inning without any more damage!
Thanks Joe West for one run.
Not a fan of the new thread. Gotta know when to give us a new one, Sam.
Don’t worry, that’s just to remind us to keep playing hard.
well, take a look at that. howard got a hit
Wow, whoever was the guy who tried to catch that ball must have never played Little League. Holding their glove palm up while it’s coming at their face.
1 mo andy!
most awesome sound I’ve heard ever

Trust me, I am. Angel must be quite happy as well
Is that an Andy Pettitte chant I hear????
****
Yup. I joined in.
Angel- where are you?
*****************
I am here! I had to go and get more wine. When Andy gave up that HR, it was because I ran out of wine, lol.
At least thats what i’m telling myself. LOL
Andy please get Ibanez out….
I told you people we needed a one two three, now the Philliies have cut it to 4.
An-dy Pet-titte!!! Clap clap clap
An-dy Pet-titte!!! Clap clap clap
An-dy Pet-titte!!! Clap clap clap
Phillies 2. joe West 1.
Last batter of Andy’s career? Go get ‘em AP.
Girardi must have told Andy to just empty the tank
That HR is on me.
I was just complaining that this game was getting boring.
My buddy almost killed me.
Andy & Matsui – one year deal with incentives
and bye bye damon, he is older, more slump prone, and seems to have constant calf issues
C’mon, Joba. Do your job!
Thank you Andy !!!!!
Good job, Andy!
In that case-
Angel bottoms up!
NOOOOOOOO
LEave him in
LEt him get out of the inning.
It’s the bottom of the order.
Joe Joe Joe No!
Gah!
I hope this works.
Big hand for Andy.
Well we got the best out of Andy on short rest.
NYY626
Andy has been a horse and pretty much mastered their big guns tonight
Hell of a job Andy!
Joba better not blow this!
joe west finally got one right on werth.
better late than never.
Oh well. Not gonna be a laugher I guess.
I’m beaming
The crowd sounds pretty into it to me.
whoo let’s keep it together boys
andy pettitte 2009 – WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!
Oh man. Joba…
Just get an out. No hits, walks, just one out.
Andy Pettitte can pitch w/ 3 days rest.
Yeeeeeah
Girardi was a little too late with Andy. He lost it quick..
hats off to Andy
Good job, Andy! Come on, Joba!
He gave us plenty, now it’s the bullpen’s time to come up big. All we need is 4 outs.
Andy’s line is ugly with all the Wests, I mean walks, but he did what AJ couldn’t do…BATTLE!!!
Time for Joba to come in and throw smoke!

Imagine how John Miller would be sounding right now.
joe buck is horrible for baseball.
matty, did u just say get rid of damon?
erica???!!!
Now the fun begins—Joba
Andy Pettitte, A True Yankee.
Hopefully Joba can get an out quickly here..No messing around…
Heart pounding … go Joba …
Wonder why Phil Coke isn’t coming in?
if that ends up being his last game as a yankee(or at all) thats a pretty great way to go out
We need Mo for the 8th. Joba and Marte need to hold the Phillies for an inning.
This was shaping up to be the biggest inning of the game for the last couple innings now.
Andy’s control was starting to waver, the middle of the lineup was due.
Time for Joba to re-ignite the “Joba to the BP talks.” Have to get Feliz. Leave 8-9-1 for next inning.
AccuScore says you can put up 27 game threads, the result will be the same!
We got this good job yanks!
Pettitte gives them 5.1 innings very good balls. One mistake and then the final out of the year for him. Chamberlain needs to strand this runner, so the Yanks can tack on a few more runs. This score won’t end at 7-3.
Great outing for Pettitte couldn’t ask for much more than that
“joe buck is horrible for baseball.”
Joe Buck is horrible for planet Earth.
No time for a Joba meltdown. Just think his Mom will be able to watch this Yankee Classic for many, many, many, years to come.
Pettitte did better than I think most people expected and luckily the offense is working. I’m cautiously optimistic now.
Let’s go, Joba.
I hate when FOX cuts to commercial so quick. Can we please enjoy Andy Pettitte coming off of the field and getting congratulations from his teammates …. possibly a curtain call in what could be his last time pitching as a Yankee.
It really got me when they cut to commercial when Mo was coming in during the all-star game and everyone was going INSANE after destroying Paplebum.
the Phillies won’t go without a fight.
Shut them down.
Score more Yankee runs too.
Oh boy.
This bullpen is gunna give me an ulcer.
But I still believe in them.
LETS GO YANKS!!!!
Like I said, Andy Pettitte is a warrior, he was running on fumes, and still gave them what they wanted.
If Joba gives up a HR, I’m going through this screen and choking him with my bare hands.
I wish those chants were still going…
Andy did his job tonight and then some.
The whole key with him going on short rest is that the team really only needed 5 innings from him and the lead.
With Mo available for 2 innings they just needed Andy to get them through 5 with the lead.
And he did exactly that.
He emptied the tank and gave the team what he had. And the offense did it’s job.
The bull pen just needs to be ok for 1 1/3 innings and that’s the game before it gets to Mo.
good challenge for joba here…
Nick in SF in Larkspur November 4th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
AccuScore says you can put up 27 game threads, the result will be the same!
But have they figured out what you’re having for dinner tomorrow?
Joba please don’t throw a get me over fastball. Feliz is a fastball hitter.
Girardi has really become a complete good manager. He knows he overmanaged early and it cost his team a few wins. He did the right thing leaving Andy there to finish the inning and did the right thing to take him out after the double. I feel comfortable with him as manager.
Great job from our warrior Andy Pettitte.
People of LoHud-
Can we just enjoy the game tonight. And worry about who will be here in 2010 when the season is over. You know, tomorrow.
This is a good game. Lets enjoy it
Let’s go Joba throw strikes!!!!
Stop with the complaining of Posada. Some of you act like he hasn’t had a hit at all in the Post season. He did great with Pettitte tonight. Or are we still fixated on those 2 passed balls, that we can’t give the guy any credit for catching Andy? Its only the negative things right?
Nervous.
100 pitches of fun… November 4th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
Girardi was a little too late with Andy. He lost it quick..
————–
More like Joe West slowly took it from him.
heard in between innings: girardi putting in a request to change his # to 28…
I dont feel good w/ Joba.
Give Rivera a 3-inning save
will he screw around with the slider tonight?
joba needs to use the fastball and listen to posada.
the old guard has done this before.
3 outs to Mo (if necessary)
9 outs to 27
Nice work Joba
Come Joba, blow this chump away
Good job !
9 more outs!!!!!
With Mo available for 2 innings they just needed Andy to get them through 5 with the lead.
And he did exactly that.
Andy does what he always does, maximum effort
good work Joba…

Amen!
What Erica said!!!
LETS SCORE SOME MORE RUNS FOR ANDY!!!!!!!!!!!
Yet there were some folks who didn’t want Pettitte back this year…
Now Yanks, pile a few more on so I can exhale!
Thank you Andy Pettitte-
Thank you for being the classy warrior you are.
Thank you for shutting everyone up who said you could not pitch on 3 days rest.
Thank you for being a Yankee
Pettitte walks away at the end of the season, only if he wants to. I wouldn’t be shocked if he did, but, I wouldn’t be shocked to see him sign up for one more year, either.
According to Gameday, Joba put the last three pitches in the exact same spot.
Howard hurtin’ us
Pettitte leaving to applause
Joba’s got fight too!!!!!
I almost wish Chad Gaudin could see an inning, just because. I can’t think of anyone who was on the edge of seeing so much playing time, who saw so little!
18 outs, 9 to go.
Thank goodness Godzilla terrorized the city!
Good job by Joba. Time to get more runs. Now Joba, Hughes or Robertson has to get 3 more outs to get the ball to Mo. Top of the order will be up in the 8th or 9th.
Ah — Joba did NOT throw a big, fat pitch over the middle of the plate! Hurrah!
That pitch to Howard was a bad break, it was moving away but started just too far inside. A bit more over the middle and it would have been a K.
Harrison was doing a rope a dope, I thought it was a FO to the track
Bats have to get back to work. Just rip the Phils’ hearts out.
randy,
Joba threw 5 pitches – 4 fastballs.
And the one slider he threw was a waste pitch low and out of the zone.
He completely overpowered Feliz.
He just needs to stop thinking and listen to the catcher.
Big inning here. The Phillies have nothing in their pen that can stop this lineup.
the crowd sounds very loud to me. I don’t know what people are complaining about.
great work, Joba!
One more inning from him, and then to Mo.
and please, re-sign Hideki! I think he’s a better hitter than Johnny at this point.
“But have they figured out what you’re having for dinner tomorrow?”
Dangerous territory, KF, WWNHFDT is not a sanctioned game.
It’s still an open question for tonight, but how can I not get Japanese after what we have seen???
So nice to hear the crowd chant ANDY PETTITTE! even after the Howard HR! andy deserved that! good job ANDY! good job to the crowd too!! well deserved!
a few sliders mixed in are fine.
just don’t live off of them.
joba needs to command the fastball and use the slider when it’s not so predictable.
when he shakes off a pitch , what does he think the hitter thinks is coming ?
Andy easily goes 8 innings with a real strike zone tonight. Unbelievable job to go 6 2/3 with 3 R against Joe West, I mean the Phillies.
I feel sorry for Cano, you can tell he’s trying so hard to contribute. Posada seems like he really wants to hit one out of the park. Hope it happens tonight. Quiet some critics
Chad Gaudin is the Yankee security blanket if the series goes 8 games.
“Or more like 3 outs.”
9 stop messing w/ fate. Forgive him baseball gods.
Thank You Andy Pettitte.
Isn’t it surreal seeing the grey haired Pettite being a warrior on 3 days rest!?!
He was just a 2nd year phenom in ‘96
Amazing.
I love these guys. Jeter, Petitte, Posada, Mo…they define my life as a Yankee fan.
I’m 21 now…I was 8 when I started really following baseball…that was in ‘96
I can’t even imagine the Yankees without these guys.
This WS means a ton to me.
LETS GO YANKS!!!!!
(I just wish Moose was here)
Thanks Andy, you are a true warrior. As usual, Francesa was wrong. When I heard Francesa say that using Andy on 3 days rest was a mistake, I knew Andy would come through. Andy, you’re the best!

No more runs, bullpen, hold it right here.
Get out of the seventh unscathed, and they will start smelling it.
Then Buck and McCarver will start to talk about how this season was a referendum on Joe Girardi, and how he came through with a great job of managing this “team of wealth.”
Then they will talk about Matsu, and whether or not he, or Damon will be coming back.
Then they will discuss the redemption of A-Rod.
Then they will discuss the potentially last year of Andy Pettitte.

Who thinks Matsui will get the triple for the cycle????
When do you think we bring out Mo? I think with only 4 run lead, he comes out in 8th. If we score more, then probably in 9th.
What the hell? The bar I’m at is playing sweet Caroline during that last commercial break. I’m in Yankee territory – Hoboken, NJ maybe the owner is a red sox fan? That was an insult to the yanks!

Sorry you get credit or critism based on how you perform. Everybody at the major league level tries hard.
If Joe West had a normal strike zone Andy goes CG, well maybe b/c Mo would give him the dirty looks.
Matsui will have to hit that window on the outfield wall for a triple
it sounds good bringing matsui back now but at some point when age kicks in it will hurt us
damon is a mess in lf
a total mess
yes he can it but that is it
i can see sui coming back to dh
i would get a big bat for lf or rf & try to get a cf
i also try to get a number 2 starter & move burnett to number 3 even if it takes trading one of hughes or joba
I hope that blonde reporter doesn’t ask Andy right after the game if he’s going to retire.
I mean if she MUST ask the question, I hope she asks him if he’s coming back next season instead.
Nice walk Nick.
Good now Gardner can bunt him over
I don’t feel bad for Cano. He mopes at the plate. He’s the anti-Utley.
DT-
All I want is a really, really, really big lead
I don’t think that is too much to ask!
GGBG should really bunt….
Good start to the inning … I really want at least one of those cheap Howard runs back. That’ll hurt the Phils bad.
…Damon Sublett can’t get here soon enough.
come on Gardy, get the bunt down.
Not a strike….
don’t bunt. you have a 4 run lead and Gardner is very hard to double up.
best bunter in the AL?? He’s not too good at all actually, he’s just fast as h e double hockey sticks so he gets away with bad bunts sometimes
i want to be the first tonight to give MAJOR PROPS to brian cashman this season…what a team he assembled along with the acquisitions of hairston + gaudin + hinske…and the great arms he built up in the minors. well done ca$h money…
Up and away to GGBG for a strike
Best in the American League???
What is McCarver talking about?
best bunter in the american league?
well , i hope he lays a nice one down anyway.
Best bunter in the American League? Which cheek did he pull that out of?
McCarver actually found a compliment for the Yanks!
Gardner is the best bunter in the AL
Lucky us!
Gardner’s bunting is definately why we are winning the series this year.
Oh and did I say, “Buck is an IDIOT”
Since when is Gardner an outstanding bunter
He is good but cmon the best in the AL?
McCarver said Gardner is one of the best bunters in the AL. Does anyone remember him bunting for a hit this season?
normally I wouldn’t fell bad for Cano but he’s doing everything right.
I would like 6 run lead. Then Mo can come on for 3 or 4 outs only instead of 6.
On WEEI they were barfing all day, begging the Phils to win this game and ganme 7 – callers and announcers alike.
Can’t wait to read whatever stupidity Shaughnessey puts out tomorrow. Pete Abe too!
“Best in the American League???
What is McCarver talking about?”
He’s drinking and trying to reverse jinx the Yanks.
I’d take Andy on 3 days rest in this spot over a rested Burnett (and his Molina caddy) every single time.
Gardner really isn’t that good
ESPN front page says Hideki has 2 doubles and HR. Joe Buck just said he is a triple away from a cycle.
Was it defensive indifference that he got to second? Does he indeed have a single or not?
Who is the idiot? Me ?
I didn’t know GGBG was one of the best bunters in the AL either.
You learn a lot from these guys
Can Gardner hit or bunt?
maybe McCarver realized he wants to be part of a winning team. He’s getting fired right now.
I don’t feel bad for Cano, either. He looks like he’s just given up. Hard to feel sorry for that kind of ‘tude. At least Swish (who drives me nuts) keeps at it — in his own, sort of inept way.
And hey — he got a walk!
gardner doesnt make the roster next year
“Brown rice spicy shrimp roll”
Well, I don’t think that’s a speciality in San Rafael, but we’ll see.
Thank you Andy Pettitte, you will walk in the pantheon of Yankee greats!
gardner just totally outmatched…
Not a good AB there Brett…
Patrick:
What bar? That is a disgrace.
Gardner come on? Can’t bunt..
Gardner is a fool. What are you looking at ?
How do I swing?
God if this guy plays next year with any consistency, we are in trouble..
I guess GGBG doesn’t like pitches right down the middle.
9 outs to go!!
In the middle of a Yankee at bat,fox advertises for the NFL?
I miss the Melkman
Can Gardner do anything? How do you take a fastball right down the middle again and not swing?? Wake up…
Melky is just an average hitter, but Gardner has devolved into terrible one.
“ESPN front page says Hideki has 2 doubles and HR. Joe Buck just said he is a triple away from a cycle.”
They changed it: HR, double, single.
YankeeRay-
I saw the pics of your family. They are beautiful!
OK, Melky haters.
Miss him yet? I hope this puts to rest that piece of assclownery.
if gardner can play good D that’s all the yankees need right now.
this is all new to him.
catch the ball and the other guys will get it done.
You all misunderstood, he said Gardner is standing in front of the best bunting in the American League…
Stretch? Sorry.
Terrible execution there. We really needed to get the runner over. Brett squares way too late.
Can’t believe Gardner had to miss the Arizona Fall League for this. Tough break for the kid.
Gardner has to get that bunt down, Kevin Long should be reaming him out right now.
Bret
Melky is clearly better than Gardner…Gardner has way too many Ks looking and never looks comfortable at the plate
Can’t bunt, can’t hit, can’t swing, can’t run, can’t field (ball off the wall) Gardner.
Ajax will beat out Gardner and make this team out of spring trainin next year. Enjoy your ring Mr. Gardner.
Gardner has the worst bunting technique of anybody on the team except for Damon. That’s supposed to be part of his game and he’s brutal at it. If he can’t bunt, he’ll never get above #4 outfielder and pinch runner.
How many at bats has Gardner had in the last month? Give him a break. Cano isn’t doing much better and he plays every day.
Guys, I would give Gardy a break. Since he has come back, he has hardly gotten any ABs. It difficult to get going just like that. Look at Tex. He played brilliantly all year and still managed to get out of whack in Post season.
Call me crazy but I think Austin Jackson hits in ST and beats out both Melky and Gardner.
It won’t be that hard after all.
Gardner is like the pitcher up there…
Gardner absolutely needed to get the bunt down. There is really no excuse.
Sushi is what i had for lunch in honor of what Hideki was going to do this evening…
This kid will never stay in the majors until he stops taking fastballs with 2 strikes down the middle of the plate.
An absolutely horrible AB.
It just makes sense that after mccarver praised Gardner as the “best bunter in baseball ” that he wouldn’t get it down
It could have been worse – double play. I would rather take a simple strike out any day.
Erica -
I don’t want to enjoy the game, I’d rather worry, it makes me feel better.
Yanks should try to increase the lead to 5-6 runs….
If Gardner was the best bunter he’d be a .300 hitter……I clearly recall having this debate back in the winter about this very same situation……Andy did a great job tonight before getting tired…..
Got it.

Dang ! If Gardner did his job a runner would be on third.
No one is asking Gardner to hit a double there. Just a bunt. When you hit as poorly as he does you have to be able to get a bunt down.
Matt Holliday whatever it costs next year. He favors either the Yanks or Mets.
I would feel lot more comfortable if we score a couple here..
“Call me crazy but I think Austin Jackson hits in ST and beats out both Melky and Gardner.
It won’t be that hard after all.”
not impossible..he would have to win the job outright..they don’t want him on the bench in the big leagues when they could having him playing everyday in the minors..
michelle: good foresight. I spent the day in Vallejo, so that was not an option!
I wonder if the reason Gardner doesn’t bunt is he is worried about getting hit on the thumb?
I agree with GB – that should be a big part of his game.

Neither will be as ridiculous as Verducci’s article in the newest SI article. There’s one paragraph where he describes each player as “The highest paid catcher” and “The highest paid pitcher” and “The highest paid shortstop”
Without Matsui we’d all be miserable right now. And how many people even wanted him on the team back in April? Be honest. I didn’t.
McCarver = Stunned Silence
I don’t think he’s said anything in 15 minutes.
Hairston needs to get on and bring the big boys to plate.

Can the FA talk take a f….g hike for tonight?
Joe Girardi appreciation comment:
Thank you for not listening to the idiots telling you all season that Brett Gardner is a better option than Melky Cabrera or Nick Swisher.
I have said it all postseason, but BG is the most overrated player on the Yankees.
Also, those who are killing Cano. He is been terribly unlucky this series. He has been really hitting the ball hard, but just right at people
27!
27!
27!
27!
3 more innings
I like a 6 run lead so much better.
“is no one upset that only four of ours hitters decided to show up to play today. cano, swisher, gardner and posada are dead weight.”
You cannot possibly be serious. Look at the scoreboard.
Nick:
i got the sushi in walnut creek, so it was a ballsy move on my part. But it was good. I still havent decided on what to eat for dinner.
“They’ll go to Mo to start the 8th.”
not with a four run lead..let’s hope the phillies don;t score here..
Hopefully Joba can have a nice clean inning. 8,9,1 coming up.
This is the critical inning.. Hopefully Joba won’t give me high blood pressure… I am too young for that. LoL.
the yankees are so close i can taste it.
joba needs to do exactly as posada says.
one clean inning and it’s mo time.
dizzo,
and this would be different from any other game this postseason?
“John Kruk must be shedding a tear somewhere around now.”
He’ll be alright when the Dominos gets to him.
gotta get through this inning… LET’S GO YANKEES!!!
How sweet would a 1-2-3 inning be from Joba?
Come on bullpen – save this one for Andy P.
Say no to Matt Holliday.
everyone..it’s nice to have a 4 run lead in the 7th, but let’s realize that this game is far from over. Let’s take this inning by inning.
“I have said it all postseason, but BG is the most overrated player on the Yankees.

Garnder is not good enough to be “overrated” …I can not say Cano has been unlucky..he has been unlucky tonight.but he has had some bad at-bats..but who really cares

“They’ll go to Mo to start the 8th.”
not with a four run lead..let’s hope the phillies don;t score here.
>>>>>>>>… I disagree. They will go to Mo with 4 run lead. Can’t risk a grand slam tying the game.
Joba sat for a long time, or so it seemed. I hope Hughes/Robertson and Marte are warming from the start.
Please…the national league can keep Matt Holliday. Let him feast on NL pitching and be overrated over there. He proved he has no place in the AL.
I can’t wait till Mo is in this game. Then I will feel so good.
Please have a good inning Joba….

YankeeRay-
I saw the pics of your family. They are beautiful!
——-
Thanks Erica, they are going to look even better covered in champagne in about an hour
lets not run ahead of ourselves and jinx this. 9 outs for # 27… lets go..
key inning right here.
How anyone can think of next year at a time like this is beyond me.
Do you also think about what you might want for breakfast the next morning while you’re having sex?
Bring Rollins up w/ 2 out and nobody on. Please!!!
They will absolutely go to Rivera in the 8th. No messing around.
Matt Holliday –
I will say one thing about that guy and then i wont talk about free agency till the off season.
As an Athletics season ticket holder this yr, Matt Holliday needs to stay in the national league. He absolutely got dominated by the A.L. pitchers. Granted the A’s didnt really have support around him, he did hit in front of giambi for a while and behind Suzuki, who is a pretty good hitting catcher.
For me though, PLEASE NO HOLLIDAY!
Brandon AWESOME! (BECAUSE In New York! This song isn’t what dreams are made of!) November 4th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
“Matt Holliday whatever it costs next year. He favors either the Yanks or Mets.”
Can the FA talk take a f….g hike for tonight?
Well there has been a lot of talk about Damon, Matsui, Gardenr ect. My comment is simply you get Holliday it makes some decisions pretty easy.
i hate it when joba shakes off posada!
this is a big inning….he swung!!!
Joba just calm down and throw strikes. He shakes his head too much.
come on Joba. put him away.
Keep throwing fastballs Joba. Stay away from the slider.
he swung
8 outs to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this yankee croud absolutely stinks tonight
going forward the yankees have some serious issues to address regarding the noise level in this stadium
Sweet
He swung there.
Yes!! 8 more to go.
got him.
and now out!!!!!
beautiful pitch!
Make good pitches to this guy
Did Buck and Tim just compliment Joba?!?
You got this Joba!!
Joe Buck is in such pain
Does Hughes come out in the 8th? I hope so.. he needs the Ego boost.
Does Ruiz ever swing???

Who wants to bet the official OUT counter to MO?
DT – OPPC member November 4th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
I wonder if the reason Gardner doesn’t bunt is he is worried about getting hit on the thumb?
—
I have a feeling that has something to do with why he hasn’t been swinging either… I’m not just saying that to make excuses for him, he’s looked awful at the plate but he was never this bad… but that must be why he didn’t get very many starts when he returned from the DL compared to before he got hurt. But it must have something to do with it, because other teams know that he won’t swing and he’s watching a lot of hittable pitches go by. I can’t imagine he completely forgot how to swing a bat since he got hurt.
Time to bury the slider
Look slider here
The Stadium needs to pipe in crowd noise..
Gardner doesn’t even need to be a great, Rizzuto/Carew type bunter….just good. He has no desire to bunt and gives a half-hearted effort. He fancies himself as a big time hitter, and he’s not. He doesn’t need to have a ton of at bats to be able to lay a bunt down, so, you can stop that crap, now..
What’s Joba been doing with his cap? Using it to strain spaghetti?
If Joba sets them down in order this inning I think you send MArte in to face the lefties in the 8th and if anyone gets on you go to Mo.
phillies are showing very good plate discipline.
Sigmund,
I completely agree. Next year is as redundant as your next breakfast is while having sex.
Even the people that pretend to be half brain dead can’t make an argument with that.
They can’t get Ruiz out.
“this yankee croud absolutely stinks tonight
going forward the yankees have some serious issues to address regarding the noise level in this stadium”
WHO CARES?? if you are so worried about it buy tickets go there and scream your head off..
Crap.
why cant the yanks get him out? just dont get it.
Ugh, #9 spot a killer tonight.
How long of a leash does Joba have?
Damn, pitch this guy inside already. That pitch was right there to hit.
Wow what the hell are these light hitting catchers eating?
Anytime any Philly hitter does anything remotely good, they are praised as if the ground underneath them moves
Joba just cannot have a clean inning.
1 out to Mo.
7 outs to 27.
7 to go
Joba’s FB has not movement at all….he is better to throw the slider or slow curve and then throw the FB out of the zone
Seriously, Buck?
Can you hear the sheer JOY in his voice as he calls any Phillie hit?
1 more Joba!
that works. 7 more outs.
oh and one more thing…i would rather see carl crawford playing left field for the Yankees next season than Matt Holliday.
Victorino will be Joba’s last batter I’d think
LIGHT HITTING CATCHERS.
My god.
That should be on the scouting report for the Yankees.
“Send up your light hitting catchers. They can’t get them out”
The phillies should pinch hit their backup catcher. He’ll probably hit something.
Too bad we couldn’t turn that DP there.
7 outs to go!!!!!!!!!
7 to go!!!
good job.. 7 remaining.
Sit down Jimmy
ruiz cant get out
rollins cant get on
i will take that trade EVERY day
That seemed double-playable to me. Was it?
“Does Hughes come out in the 8th? I hope so.. he needs the Ego boost.”

Come on Joba, one more out!

Good call on that, Michelle
I REALLYYYYYYY want to see a Joba fist pump this inning!!
That looked out to me
thats a bad play down by four runs
Joba didn’t even check the runner…
great throw
wow. running 4 runs down, with the big hitters coming up.
Let’s Go Yankees…Clap, Clap, Clap-clap-clap
Lets be fair, Marte was always really good before he got hurt in the retarded WBC. The Yanks should refuse to send players there.
“Joba’s FB has no movement at all”
It’s a 4 seam FB. How much movement do you expect?
He was safe. Let’s go Joba!
Carl Crawford, If the club option isnt picked up on him, although i think it will be.
Joba you cant walk him
I don’t like this at all….
yikes
Joba, dude, throw a strike.
Does mo come out now?
Damn Joba
I hate to say this – but –

I’ll be honest….
7 outs from the world series championship.
I could care less about Hughes’ ego
Of course Joba makes this into a circus. Suzyn just said that Marte wasn’t warming up at all.
Not good pitching Joba
marte has done the job so far….can he do it one more time?
Well, this stopped being fun.
Dang ! Come on ! Victorino can’t hit but you decide to walk him ?
Joba is just so unreliable. #9 hitter and then a walk.
I guess we’re seeing Mo for 2 innings.
I really think they should try to get outs from someone in the 8th and bring Mo in as late as possible.
Just not too late
Well…let’s see what happens here….Marte better be careful here.
Erica, shower..ahora.
Effing Joba. Can do it cleanly.
francessa is choking on his diet coke yelling for Mo
Buck is about to squeal like a little school girl.
Alright, this is officially scary.
either marte is money, like he has been
or
mo comes out to get werth
LETS GO YANKS, PUT THE NAIL IN IT

NO LONG BALL!
i hope the non-double play doesnt come back to bite them…
well, Phillies’ last chance is here.
Chamberlain was rolling pretty good. Can’t be upset over the single, but, that walk is a killer.
It’s on Marte, now. Hopefully, it’s a one pitch double play.
ONE MORE OUT!!!..JUST ONE MORE!!!
this yankee croud absolutely stinks tonight

*********************************
Sounds plenty loud to me.
And its “crowd”.
Great. Utley up.
marte to mariano
Marte will save us…
if we can just get out of this inning without Utley or Howard hitting a homer, I will breathe easy.
I don’t need this aggravation. Lets go Marte. One out please.
michelle: last time I was in Walnut Creek was the night the Yanks clinched in the ALDS and we zipped down to Danville and ate at La Ultima, they have a great specialty, New Mexico Enchiladas… mmmmmmmmmmmmmm
pathetic job by Joba to walk Victorino there.
I wouldn’t mess around here. Mo’s got the 8th and 9th; should’ve brought him out for Utley too.
This your game boys and girls. Phillies get 1 solid shot at getting right back in this game. Does every boby feel confident with Marte?
This is it. WS right here.
Now I am really worried.
Another bad job by Chamberlain.
He just walks tooany people to trust in any situation.
Up to Marte to try and stop the bleeding.
Let’s go marte!
Hopefully, law of averages catches up with him today.
GB…they only need 1 more out
You can see the way the game may slip away. Four run lead the #9 hitter and he throws 4 balls.
You have to throw strikes there. He hits one out so what.. Now utley can make this a one run game
Bean him.
Of course, with wo outs already, that means that Howard won’t bat in the 8th and Marte can start with needing just 2 outs.
nevermind about hughes now…lol i was thinking if we are up by 4 or more, then why not. But if something bad happens here, forget i even suggested it.
joba couldn’t command the fastball.
that needs to be his focus next spring.
I hope Marte has his best stuff here for Utley. Otherwise Yanks are in trouble.
I think you should just have a shower for traditions sake, Erica.
Chamberlain chagrined
Chased away, it’s now Marte
This could get Utley…
Jobas gotta get his crap together.
I believe in Damaso Marte!
“well, Phillies’ last chance is here.”
Dude respect this team. It likely won’t be the last chance.
Victorinos hand is hurt batting lefty Joba needed to keep the ball in on him not outside
Yes! Hughes is warming.
hold my breathe!
i have butterflies…
marte was hitting 94 a couple games ago…he was amped
now we just need him to be who he is
and what we signed him for
good pitch
please.. one more marte one more.
letsssssssssss gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
WHAT IS WITH THESE MID PITCH CATCHER VISITS?!?!!?
Get him, get him … I recall Utley hitting at least two 2-strike HRs. Careful, Domaso.

Great pitch by Marte. Not so sure about it being a swing, but, sure looked lovely to me.
let marte pitch to ryan howard then bring in mo…
marte for mvp!!!!!!!
who knew marte would be our second best guy in the pen this series?
Marte earning that contract this post-season.
He’s been lights out.
How much of his contract did Marte just earn?
Yeahhhhh!!!!!
I love it — McCarver is in a COMA!
Wow. How good has this guy been this postseason.
What a story he has been.

What a postseason Damaso has had. Just terrific out of the pen.
Can we throw out the Utley MVP talk now?
chase chase chase utley!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wow
mo time.
He went Will T
Marte just showed us why we signed him
is this the greatest WOrld Series performance by a pitcher with a 9.00 era in history??
keep marte in for howard. Mo for 5 outs is not as taxing as 6
I gotta do it….
Chase Utley …. HE GONE!!!!
“How much of his contract did Marte just earn?”
All of it.
Wow..MARTE is HOT!! Chase…Chase(s) for Strike 3!!!
More runs, please!
Posada deeked the ump. Good job Marte. Absolutely huge. Another run here would be huge.
Lets just have 6 up and6 down.. #4 through #9. No need to bring their top of lineup at plate again at all.
marte has been REDICULOUS this series…
imagine he shut down the red sox lefties over the last 4 years like he is doing to the phils…anyway thats another story
i am loving life in enemy territory right now

And if Nady doesn’t get hurt we are that much better and it’s a steal of a trade. At this point Marte has made it worth it by himself.
“WHAT IS WITH THESE MID PITCH CATCHER VISITS?!?!!?”
Its the World Series man. Its getting on the same page. As long as we’re winning, what does it matter?
the POWER of the SHOWER lives on !!!
Runs Now! Runs Now! Seal it!
6 to go for number 27
I still can’t believe that Marte has turned into the second coming of Mike Stanton lol…but I’ll take it
I guess this is what Cashman envisioned when extending Marte’s contract last year. A lot of people (myself included) were panning that decision this year during the regular season when he was horrible… Cashman is a genius!
Law of Averages Baby.. Utley was too hot…
“Love is a Tabatafield!!!”
Oh shut up!
I’m already starting to miss baseball. This has been an awesome season.
I though Cashman was silly for giving Marte that contract. As it turns out, I was silly for doubting Cashman.
Marte can never throw another pitch again and he was worth his 3 year extension.
How clutch has Marte been? Can’t say enough about this guy. 11 straight outs in the playoffs. and going in he was a huge question mark. he has stepped up in a really big way. imagine if we were relying on Phil Coke for all these outs against lefties late in games
6 outs till 27!!!!!!!!!!!!
We have Tex, Arod and Godzillllllllllllllllla coming to plate.. I feel good.
Damaso Marte = Graeme Lloyd circa 1996??
Marte for Howard, then Hughes??
I don’t think Joba was horrible. Yeah, the walk hurt a lot, no doubt. But he got some outs and didn’t get hammered. Yeah, he needs to work this offseason, and learn how to command and pitch better. But he didn’t bomb out there. He did enough, not as much as we might want, but he did enough. Just my opinion.
joe will go marte for howard
phil until he gives up a hit
mo to close it
Let’s tack on a few more runs.
I’d like to see back-2-back by Tex and ARod
Out of the shower!!!!
It worked!!!!!!!
Correct me if my memory failes me, but wasn’t Joba’s command when he first came up to the majors terrific? He’s all over the place now AND his velocity is down.
Unless he’s out of options, I’d send him down to the minors at the start of the season and have him go back to work as a starter…again. Then, bring him and up and have him continue as a starter.
Otherwise — just trade him and get something of value. I honestly am tired of his act. And don’t tell me he’s still “young” — there are great, mature pitchers out there younger than Joba. Joba’s problems are in his attitude and in his head.
Yankee fans who live in New England are on top of the world!!!!
Heck, I’d go Marte to Hughes to Mo. Marte to Howard, and Hughes for the next two outs, provided nobody gets to 2nd on him, otherwise Mo for 5 or 6. You still have to at least presume you might need Mo tomorrow.
Yanks tacking on a few would be NICE
Marte!!!
He really is Graeme Lloyd revisited: double-digit ERA in the regular season; lights out in the playoffs.

Ladies and gentlemen, take this moment, and embrace it. We are witnessing the beginning of something special. A new Yankees dynasty has been born, and it will have begun after the next 6 outs are made.
What a turnaround……seriously, this guy has saved us given the state of most of our pen. When he returned after his injury, his velocity still wasn’t what it should have been; what a time to get healthy………..Amazingly, he gets hit hard in his first post-season start this year and has since been lights out. Thank goodness for this guy
maybe Joba’s problems are mental and being in shape but it would be really stupid to give up on him this early and they’re not going to do it

Marte has the most untelling 9.45 ERA, if you check a season game log he had a couple bad outings (4-5 runs in an inning) then got hurt but the rest was pretty much zeroes.
I didn’t want Marte on the post-season roster. I admit it. But his shoulder really was damaged at the start of the season.
He’s a different pitcher out there now. Amazing.

Well he stunk up AAA this year so no real loss.
Want to hear something sad-
My shower really needs to be cleaned & curtain liner changed. But I am afraid it will mess up the shower karma.
So I am waiting until the season is over.
Also, I knew Game 1 was going to be a loss when I pulled the curtain and saw a bug with 10,000 legs
speaking of cashman. great job convincing andy to come back.
I’d sure like a tack on or two here.
I also agree to bring back Marte to pitch to Howard

Why not have Marte pitch to Howard? If we score a few runs, the decision is a ton easier.
I have a better chance of hitting for the cycle – and i’m at home, on my couch, w/ no shoes on and drinking whiskey
Matsui likes those 2(rbi) for 1 (hit) deals today.. Can he get another 2 for 1s please?
ok I got one right, now sui do your part

“Can I make a speech?”
after the blog parade….
***
Deal!
Why bring in a lefty to face Matsui? Has Manuel seen the numbers Matsui vs left hand pitching?
Scott Eyre?? The former Cub??
Godzilla will eat him up, then spit him out with that breath of fire!
I’d let Marte pitch to Howard…and then bring in Mo.
Phil Hughes can stay in the pen…
the phillies fielders would all have to have flashforwards for Matsui to get a triple. But another upperdecker isn’t out of the question..
Tomorrow’s headline: Godzilla Destroys Philly
Go Go Godzilla!!!
Hughes should be nowhere near this game if it remains 7-3. Marte to Howard, then bring in Mo for 5 outs.
There might be a Hughes sighting, but no way he’s coming in next inning, unless we tack on quite a few more runs this inning!!
Can Gardner just run the bases for Matsui? Brett stands off to the side, and when hideki makes contact Gardy takes off. is that legal?
WORLD SERIES MVPS:
1. Matsui
2. Rivera
3. Pettite
i pick matsui
Mo is coming out in 8th. They have their 4, 5, 6 hitters coming up. No way anyone other than Marte or Mo pitch to them.
And the award for the most valuable giant atomic radiation mutated lizard from tokyo bay who can crush cities like philly under his giant feet goes to……..
I can’t wait till the 9th inning. Time to end the Phillies season.
i still think the mvp will be mariano with multiple inning saves…
Here comes the triple for Matsui. Long shot to center…Victorino falls and breaks his arm and can’t throw the ball. Matsui safe at 3rd…
looking forward to posada batting righty again. Would almost rather see Molina hit for him and finish the game behind the plate.
I’m not a big fan of Posdaa at this point.
Next year he catches and when he’s not catching he sits. His contract is now officially a bad 4 year deal. His agent did a good job of scaring us by talking to Mets. It should have been a 3 year deal.
is anyone as nervous as me?
i don’t know why.
but matsui is the mvp, no doubt
Enough Pitching Changes
>>> don’t jinx please.. we have 6 more outs to go.
I’m not sure about Marte staying in for Howard – didn’t we go through this before?
Joe G. said Marte wasn’t good after sitting on the bench, so he went to Coke.
DT-
All I want is a really, really, really big lead
Go Go Godzilla!!!!
Home run by Matsui and then bat around and give Rodriguez to get the RBI record for a total Post Season.
i turn 16 in an hour and if we win this tomorrow will probably be the greatest day of my life!
Able was I, Eyre I saw Godzilla!
looks like the crowd cast their vote…
“When we were talking about WS MVP. Who would have thought Matsui would be up there in top 3 choices? NOBODY. ”
I’d say for the Yankees
1.Mo
2.CC
3.Damon
4.Matsui
Can you believe Al has the most clutch hits and doesn’t the MVP
Erica,
I was referring to our management, and whether we keep Matsui or not. Sorry for the mix up.
joe in long island-
the blog is learning it’s not a straight road for young pitchers.
i agree that joba will get better next year.
hughes too.
Hughes should only be in the game if the Yanks score 3 more runs
Matsui with a shot at the single-series RBI record…
Don’t they know Matsui is also very streaky hitter.. He can get on one of those hot streaks then God may help you.. Seems like he is on one fo those right now..
“Enough Pitching Changes
>>> don’t jinx please.. we have 6 more outs to go.”
SORRY…
Matsui is my choice for MVP…today, the pinch hit HR and the HR in Game 2.

Gotcha!
i love the new york yankees.
Matsui wants the triple.
HE wants it bad.
He nearly jumped out of the box when he swung at that first pitch.
Suzyn just announced that the cameraman have texted her tonight that Matsui should be MVP.
Not a bad choice, I must say.
he’s still the mvp
that is a horrendous call.
Matsui was hitting a nice .667 in 12 at bats, before that strikeout.
looking forward to posada batting righty again. Would almost rather see Molina hit for him and finish the game behind the plate.

This team is on the brink of possibly winning a World Series. A World Series that Posada made some fairly decent contributions to. Is this really necessary, given that? Sheesh.
C’mon Jorge..restore my faith in you
I think I’ll wait until the Yankees have won before declaring anyone the MVP…..
Godzilla prefers
Philly cheesesteaks served up fast
Lunchtime in Japan
crap, well the good news is that now Jorge can’t hit into a double play
the MVP can wait. Need 6 more outs first!
He held up
can cano finally catch a break here?
bad move, cano is startin to come alive. He will make them pay here
I hope Cano, Swisher and Gardner all finish strong
Cano will make them pay I hope.
I guess I ruined the cycle for Matsui…
OK. Robbie Cano…they want you…prove them wrong
Be great to see Cano Kill one here!
“1. Matsui
2. Rivera
3. Pettite

Really? I couldn’t tell by the “1″ in front of Matsui’s name.
Robbie Cannot 3 for 21…….yikes!!!!
wow…now would be a great time for Cano to break out of it.
Jorge has been awful tonight and they are walking him to get to Robbie.
Make them pay!!!!
Mistake. Cano is swinging well tonight. He will come through.
come on cano
bust out of this slump
make them PAY
we still love you
IF MO comes in, i wanna hear enter sandman on tv
Can-Do!
Can-Do!
Can-Do!
Make them sorry!!!!!!!! RESPECT
Robbie has a chance to ice it
Pitching around Jorge? All right, payback’s a ….
Joba will only improve next year if (and that’s a big IF) he learned anything this year. Let’s hope so.
Hughes will improve because he’s a smart, mature guy. Wish Joba had some of that in him, but he became very enamored with the attention and bought into his own “fame” WAY too soon.
good time for cano to break out with a hit!
he has hit the ball on the nose…but nothing to show for it yet. now would be nice.
“Matsui is my choice for MVP…today, the pinch hit HR and the HR in Game 2.”
Again I understand amazing game tonight, how could the MVP go to Matsui, he started in 2 games prior to this.
You can’t tell me
Mo
CC
Damon even Marte take the backseat to Matsui
Bad idea… Cano way overdue and has had some good swings.
Posada looks a little lost tonight.

“Dave Robertson

He’s that old?
wow..robbie!
ughhh
Did anyone eever hear why Jete gave up on the bubble gum during games? That’s a serious Q. I miss his bubbles as he was rounding the bases.
Perhaps Cano should try tossing the gum to help his suspect focus…
cano has not been helpful
cano….pathetic at bat.
Cano is clueless
Cano is so pathetic right now. Thank god the Yankees are up right now.
6 outs away. Let’s get it done.
Oh if you think winning doesn’t thrust a dagger into their heart.. you’re wrong, everytime we win. It thrusts in deeper
“Jorge has been awful tonight”
yeah he was awful tonight. Thats why him & Pettitte worked awesome together and him & Marte worked good together.Shut up, people act like he hasn’t had a hit all series. Leave the guy alone. Despite the passed balls give him some credit behind the plate
Cano is disgusting
Awful at bat, just awful, swing through 2 fastballs then wave at a curve in the dirt.
enough pitching changes – awesome stat
im sure fox has no idea
cano u f’ng suck!!!!!!!!!!
i really dont wanna see his ugly face and stupid swings again.
trade him away, he’s a piece of garbage.
always falls under pressure, never does anything good
I can’t wait until Cano leaves NY and goes back to DR
Cano is so frustrating.
Does Joe allow a man to get on before he goes to MO or is a 5 out save?
Pete A. is a joke. I am so much happier with Sam and Chad. Pete’s negativity is much more befitting a Sux blog.
Marte is still in
Cano is a disgrace this postseason, so is Swisher……..I mean jeez, they are both automatic outs
I think Cano hit his way out of town.
He will be traded.
The most vexing Yankee player other than Burnett – Cano.
Man, I keep saying that Robbie is due…..
Focus peeps.
6 more outs.
Well if that was Cano’s last at-bat of the World Series, it’s a fitting one.
Thankfully, no one will remember his performance 5-6 years from now if the Yankees get through the last six outs.
Bring it home, Mo.
Bring it home.
Oh, Cano.
One of the worst world series performance I’ve evee seen..cano don’t ya know
cano u f’ng suck!!!!!!!!!!
i really dont wanna see his ugly face and stupid swings again.
trade him away, he’s a piece of garbage.
always falls under pressure, never does anything good
You’re from hell.
Cano just can’t hit with RISP.
Too big a task for him.
Thankfully, his D has been great.
His O has been non-existent this post-season.
ok 6 more outs …. waited a long time for this!!
Aye Cano
Looks like we’ll get some metallica this inning.
Cano is the reincarnation of Alfonso Soriano
Whatever scouting report they had on Cano must have been a whopper, they have him looking like a AAA player, what a mess he’s been this Series.
Oh I am going to be sitting on pins and needles here.
Everyone calm down with the trade Cano talk. 6 more outs, 6 more outs.
Cano needs to be drug tested … for meth. Is there any way to put in a pitcher to hit for Cano?
Wow-
Nothing changes the mood on this blog quite like a Cano strike out.
Quit it. We are 6 outs fromt he World Series Championship!!! Bash Cano another day.
all this talk about the MVP is premature. it’s decided after the series and the series is still on
“cano u f’ng suck!!!!!!!!!!
i really dont wanna see his ugly face and stupid swings again.
trade him away, he’s a piece of garbage.
always falls under pressure, never does anything good”
He hit 2 hard line drive outs, excuse him for not finding a hole. And it’s 7-3 for the WS and he’s given us good defense too… LMAO at this comment.
Guess not. Cano hasn’t been good in the WS, like a lot of others, but, he had some big run producing hits against the angels with the 2 triples and double. Everybody has contributed to wins in the post season this year, and that’s what makes a winning team.
If the Yankees were losing badly or were in the middle of an important rally, I’d probably wouldn’t be too forgiving with that AB.
Oh, what??????? Robbie Cannot!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow Damaso in to face Howard.
Easy guys. Apart from that AB, Cano had some pretty good swings tonight.
Cano has no idea what the strike zone is, but someone posted we should all feel sorry for him because he is trying so hard. LoL
who is gonna play 2nd if they trade Cano. Guy did hit .320 this year and has played good defense in the playoffs. You can’t get rid of a guy unless you know somebody better to put in his spot. He’s just pressing..
since i called yanks in 6, i offer the following
pettitte, matsui and marte – the pros come through. god bless mr. cashman, may he last forever!
wow! I am not a big cano fan..but you guys are a little rough…6 outs to go…
Cano couldn’t hit if off a tee right now.
Cano had a bad postseason, but he is still a very good player. Not everyone can be a superstar in the postseason. Ask Ryan Howard.
cano is not getting traded…
agree posada called a great game tonight and he has to get some credit with the starting pitching performance in the postseason. but also have to admit that he has often looked lost behind the plate with some passed balls a bunch of stolen bases and even one time where he wasnt aware how many outs there were (against the angels)
Not sure what value we’d get for Cano…he can’t hit with RISP or in pressure situations. He occasionally makes a good play in the field, though, followed by a idiot mistake…
GO MARTE!
Our 6,7,8, and 9 hitters have done bubkis tonight.
Whiffed again.
The Yankees can’t possibly blow a 4 run lead now, can they?
Well, can they?
strikeout record
Let’s Go Yankees….Clap, Clap, Clap-clap-clap
MARTEEEEEEEEEE
“who is gonna play 2nd if they trade Cano. Guy did hit .320 this year and has played good defense in the playoffs.”
agree…you will never replace him…
YES! 5 more to go .
YAY!!!!!!
Is that a record strike out for Howard?
Wow Marte has been great.
Marte has definitely earned his job back. That’s the guy we traded for last year.
Perfect. perfect pitching. Flawless.
now howard has a WS record too!!! congrats to ryan howard.
damaso just made everybody forget about tabata.
rivera!!!
5 more outs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
moooooooooooooooooooo
Howard set the K record but they dont talk about that.
Howard sets a K record right??????????? How come the announcers ignored that???????????????????????
I guess Howard should be traded to.
Uh oh— SANDMAN.
i love that song
Good job, Marte! Let’s go Rivera! Enter Sandman!
Erica, actually Posted mentioned today that they could trade Cano for a starter, which I think pretty possible.
They need pitching for sure, and Wang is uncertain.
Joe goes for the jugular…
Wow, Marte is Narsty. MO coming in. I don’t wanna be negative but if somehow the Phillies come back and win this game it will be devasting, I will probably cry.
Enter Sandman
Great work by Marte !
can we find a way to keep marte healthy next year please.
6 pitches 2 Ks to 2 of the best hitters on the planet.
Wow.
Bravo Marte.
I believe in Damaso Marte.
Enter Sandman.
Closing in on 27!
Lets go Yankees!!!!
Props to Fox for showing Enter Sandman.
Marte is a beast
Marte had a great world series. Great.
how does fox go to a commercial with mariano coming in?
The stadium sounded mighty loud to me there….
Marte clearly is the MVP!
Marte gets the job done once again. Great job neutralizing Utley and Howard.
Ryan Howard simply cannot hit a decent breaking pitch from a left handed pitcher. He is completely over matched.
Enter Sandman!
NOW THAT IS THE GUY WE TRADED FOR!!!!!!!!!!
ENTER SANDMAN!!!!!!!!!!
It begins.
Cano was decent last year with runners in scoring position. Hit .310 in ‘06 and .297 in ‘07. He’ll get that production back next season….IN PINSTRIPES.
Fox should be showing Mo’s ENTIRE entrance
Why the hell does Fox do that? Show the first strains of Enter Sandman and cut it off as soon as the crowd starts to go bonkers.
chills, i remember my one time at yankee stadium hearing mo come out to that… memories.
at least we got to hear a little of enter sandman before the commercial break…
tough to argue this move but he owned werth last time, but its Mo
Wish you could hear Sandman better on the broadcasts!
Mo is the coolest guy on the planet.
If Cole Hamels wants the season over, Ryan Howard most certainly does as well. If you were to look up the word strikeout in the baseball dictionary, you’d see his picture.
Spectacular job by Marte!
6 pitches, 6 strikes, 2 strikeouts
5 more outs!
Go Mo!
“damaso just made everybody forget about tabata.”
I forgot about tabata the minute they traded him..
What a job by Marte.
In the World series he has faced 8 hitters, and struck out 5. Just fantastic.
Gary November 4th, 2009 at 11:13 pm
…someone posted we should all feel sorry for him because he is trying so hard. LoL

He had been putting together some good ABs. That last one was not one of them.

Eat that Sux Nation!!!!!!
Marte is good, but he needs to work on his pointing ability.
5 outs

it’s mindboggling how a guy with that many holes in his swing can put up those #’s in the NL…are their pitchers that bad?
Benny Blanco………..my thinking too….no word on Howard’s K record…………if Arod set that record, they’d be yapping about it until he retires!!!!!!!!
We’re off to never-never land…
If you trade Cano for a Starter, who is gonna play 2nd. Far as I know there is nobody in the minors and nobody in free agency. Not really a smart move.
To be cautiously optimistic, I’m getting ready to celebrate.
“can we find a way to keep marte healthy next year please.”
No WBC next year, so he should be good.
The pop for Mo when Enter Sandman hits sounds like the pop The Rock used to get when his music hit.
Cano is the new Alex. Haters got to hate on somebody
We should hit a 4th game thread tonight

There’ll be champagne flowing tonight.
Cano was a huge part of our success this year. Guy hit .320 25 85 this year and played much better defense.
He is hitting as poorly as Tex this postseason. You all want to trade Tex too??
Ridiculous that they don’t even mention the record. What goons.
C’mon Mo. Go the distance, baby.
“Our 6,7,8, and 9 hitters have done bubkis tonight.”
If a baseball team is relying on their bottom of the order to win games, they are in deep trouble. As long as the top of the order is producing, you can get by with a weak bottom.
save the season?

wow! I am not a big cano fan..but you guys are a little rough…6 outs to go…
————————————————————
That’s not being rough. That’s being stupid.
Queitstorm,
Oh no Posada won’t get any credit at all. The way it works around here is that he is only recognized for his mistakes. It shouldn’t be that way, but it is
Whatever McCarver is smoking up in the press box, I want some.
Well it’s the right move, but we had better win now. Can’t afford a game 7 without Mo
Fox cut away when Mo jogged in? That’s weird. I’m watching the Fox broadcast here in Taiwan (with WCBS on in the background) and they never cut to commercial here. They showed Mo jog out the whole way…
Then they showed the expressions on the Yanks’ faces in the dugout. Priceless.
I also got to see Andy walk to the dugout, tip his cap and hear the thunderous applause. NICE.
The GOAT,Greatest of all time on the mound!!
I was an avid supporter of Tabata. I thought he has absolutely great potential. I also liked Austin Jackson, but I thought he was just too raw of a player, and that too much needed to go his way for him to be as good as his potential is. But Austin has eclipsed Tabata in being closer to his goal of full potential.
I’m just surprised his name is being brought up, I forgot he wasn’t even on our team.
cole hamels – the happiest phillie in the park…
“Erica, actually Posted mentioned today that they could trade Cano for a starter, which I think pretty possible.
They need pitching for sure, and Wang is uncertain.
I guess..however it is hard to equal value in a trade…you will be taking a huge contract most likely and losing a lot of production from second base which you will never replace..
Timmy…you mean end the season chance
does werth ever swing?????????????
is there a yankee fan alive who wouldn’t take mariano coming in with a 4 run lead with 5 outs to go?
time to close the barn door.
I couldnt stay away any longer. Let’s go MO!!
5 outs from our first championship in 9 years and people are complaining about Cano?? Get a life. Seriously.
Let’s go Mo!
Where was that “the stadium isn’t loud” nonsense???
werth is desperate for a walk
4!!!!!!
YES!! 4 more to go.
5 more outs
The cutter is cutting.
Mo is the MAN
stadium seems to be rockin now…
4 more to Mo!
nasty
sorry, 4 more
“Yankee fans who live in New England are on top of the world!!!!”
Takes a bow.
Not bothered at all that the greatest closer in the game came into the clinching game of the world series to Enter Sandman and FOX cut to a commercial. I guess the thought of the Stadium shaking was too much for them since they haven’t been able to shut up about how quiet the Stadium is.
LOSER STATION, A TO Z.
Yankees cannot possibly blow a 4 run lead with Mo in there with 4 outs to go, can they?
Please, tell me they can’t!
4 outs!!!!
LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
kd don’t give them extra outs
I’m already getting weepy
Utley’s hair makes me gag!!

Still breakin’ bats.
he did not get a save in game 3?? I guess not..I just looked it up..it was a 3 run game.no save though??

“it’s mindboggling how a guy with that many holes in his swing can put up those #’s in the NL…are their pitchers that bad?”
djsunyc,
It’s not that. He’s two players. Against righty pitchers he is a historically great power hitter.
Against lefty pitchers – he’s a AAAA first baseman.
Nearly all of his production is concentrated into his plate appearances against right handed pitchers.
sorry vader. never again

What a pesky AB.
DAMMIT!
how shallow was gardner playing?
garner needed a map to find that ball
Voldemort
2nd double off of Mo
How shallow was Gardner playing for crying out loud
A little close in there huh Gardner?
why was Gardner in so close?????
I am so sick of Ibanez.
why would he play shallow with a 4 run lead?
still think brett gardner is useless.
DT…7 years for me, don’t do it.
and where was Gardner playing???
gardner playing so shallow…
and Gardner misplays another ball hit to center.
Fouled off about half a dozen pitches there and got squeezed a little by west to boot
Why was Gardner so shallow?
Where did this power for Ibanez come from?
I never want to see Gardner on this team again
Didn’t it look like both those fouls hit Ibanez in the face?
Prob padded by that huge tobacco wad.
WHY THE HELL WAS GARDENER PLAYING SHALLOW!!!!!!!
No Doubles Defense right now. What the heck is that!?!?
This AB is the exact reason why I would not want Mo pitching 3 innings.
Wow. Terrible job by Gardner!
Really Brett? If you cannot defend well then you have no place b/c you cannot hit.
Where the heck was brett gardner playing there?
What was that?
They had him positioned to stop a bloop basehit?
How did that ball go that far and why was Gardner playing that shallow..

why is gardner playing like he is the batter
have to play shallow because of all the dink hits vs Mo
Apparently Gardner was covering 2nd base
Yeesh, lets just end this.
Gardner playing too shallow
“garner needed a map to find that ball”
funny
Heyya:
McCarver said “this is not a save situation, but its a season saving situation, as if we were the ones down 3-2″
what a blowhard he is.
Why is Gardner playing so shallow. Hasnt he ever heard of no doubles defense
Woohoo.
wooo 3 mo outs!
Nice catch!
3!!!!!!!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Gardner has no baseball brain.
Gardner was playing shallow because 95% of the time, the hits that come off of Mo are little flares and broken bat dunkers.
“why would he play shallow with a 4 run lead?”
To stop bloopers.
3 more outs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3 MORE BABY!!!!!!!!!!
This is why Mo is the M.V.P. of this WS.
He has made this a 7 inning game for the Phillies. Such greatness.
None Werth more than Mo!
Ibanez? Impossible!
Finally, Feliz!!!!!
3 more!
3 outs to go…
Gardner with the “no singles” defense.
Mo has good stuff tonight, it’s all over.
Great job Mo !
3 more outs !
Jorge…1 HAND CATCH..REALLY???
posada is very good with popups.
they are not as easy as you’d think.
Gardner has done nothing to distinguish himself in these playoffs.
“Where did this power for Ibanez come from?”
he did have 34 something homers this year..
djsunyc November 4th, 2009 at 11:23 pm
how shallow was gardner playing?
—————–
Way too shallow against a guy who hit 34 HRs in the regular season, that’s for sure.
holy crap!~ this blog is actually moving!!!!!!! lol
CB
They should have him positioned to catch a bloop. Mo gives up a TON more bloops than balls over the OF’s head.
“Apparently Gardner was covering 2nd base”
funnier
3 more till the horse ride…
3 more outs.
Breath. Relax. Enjoy. Thank God for Mo.
down to 3 outs!
Is there any way Mo can play 10 more years????????PLEASE????????????????
Michelle, I think this is a season saving game. Game 7 would not be great for us, I don’t think.

Are you an old man like him???? You spend winters in Florida. It made me wonder
Gardner might have been able to call Posada off on that popup…
3 outs to go
I hate to critic here but you don’t play Andrew Jones depth with a 4 run lead, you try to avoid extra base hits. Gardner is struggling tonight
I don’t mind him playing shallow. I just dislike his gut instinct, and that was turning the wrong way!
But, no harm, no foul.
Let’s go Yanks!
After watching Gardner/Melky this year……..Ajax is the CF next year.
blake November 4th, 2009 at 11:24 pm
How did that ball go that far and why was Gardner playing that shallow..
Pena put him there, they didn’t want the broken bat looper to fall in. Sometimes it works, here it didn’t but three outs anyways
Brandon-
Due hit 34 home runs this year. He’s got pop.
SOoooooo close. Let’s tack on one more.
The 2-run home run notwithstanding, I think Andy Pettite gave us all a gift tonight with his valiant outing.
i think right about now is a good time for a boston sucks chant
3 more outs to no. 27 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
right now rollins in going to be the 3rd batter of the 9th…i would love him to make the last out striking out
3 more outs to go, they can’t possibly blow this now …
right?
can we get a new post?
It’s time for Gardner to go the way of Shelly Duncan.
Ibanez hits a broken bat bloop to center people complain why he wasn’t playing shallow
Smart to use Mo now.
Bruney in the 9th?
Has anyone heard from Giuseppe?
Or Murphydog?
I hope they’re able to savor this clincher
for #27
Why is Gardner playing shallow?
3 OUTS!!! THREE!!! TRES!!! TROIS!!!
GGBG,
I completely agree. Mo is more likely to give up a broken bat bloop, than a booming double. Regardless, gardner should have gotten that, due to his speed. But he didn’t even give himself a chance once he turned the wrong way.
Thank god for Rivera.
Yankee44
November 4th, 2009 at 11:25 pm
Gardner was playing shallow because 95% of the time, the hits that come off of Mo are little flares and broken bat dunkers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
True — the outfielders typically are told by the coaches to play shallow with Mo pitching.
Guys -
Gardner was playing right where he should have been.
How many hits to that part of deep center off Mo have you ever seen?
And how many sawed off bloopers?
Ajax can’t get here soon enough. I’ve had enough gritty and gutty B. G.
Um. Gardner didn’t get a good jump on that ball. But you guys do realize that the bench positions the outfielders, right?
3 more outs, and I’ll finally forget 2001. Who would ever have thought that it would take 8 long years for Mo to be in this position again — or that he would still be every bit as good?
Gardner————the next Chad Curtis……
i am surprised that nobody in new york gave rollins a hard time whenever he bats.
No pins tonight.
Tonight is a night for rings.
Would be nice to see Swish get something here because he is going to remember this at bat all winter.
John:
we’ve smoked everyone of their relievers and cliffy gave up 5 runs the last time we faced him. CC would be on normal rest, even if we somehow lost this game, i give us the advantage in game 7 at home.
But we wont need to discuss that soon.
“3 more outs to go, they can’t possibly blow this now …
“Why is Gardner playing shallow?”
It’s rare that anyone hits Rivera hard. Most of the hits off him are little bloops that dink into the outfield.
Peter Gammons must be hitting the bottle, right now
This is just awesome! Is anyone enjoying the game as much as me? My voice is almost shot…
Madson getting loose…ready to poo himself again.
swisher is not fast
I can’t believe he threw Swisher out on that. Swisher must be slooooooow.
Swisher is S L O W…………..
matsui would have beat that out
that was an impressive play…
Wow… “Excuse me” swing and Feliz makes a heck of a play on Swisher…
I thought Marte could’ve finished off the inning. Anyway come on Yanks score 8 in the 8th. And let Hughes finish it up.
bunt for a hit Gardner since you can’t get down a sac
has gardner hit the ball out of the infield in the series?
Slow Yankees………..Swisher, Molina , Jorge
Gardner going for the hat trick.
Gardner a solid 0 for 9
“matsui would have beat that out”
If Matsui hit that the ball would burst into flames, and Feliz would have dropped it in fear of third-degree burns.
swisher was not running hard
Its amazing that Swisher gets to as many balls as he does in the outfield because hes not really fast. He gets good jumps.
Carlos Ruiz needs to get OUT
Pedro didn’t have it tonight.
And Manuel is content to play an entire elimination game by keeping his best relief pitchers warming the bench.
Really hard to believe.
All of those critical outs the Phillies needed and manuel was content to let Happ and company keep the phillies season alive because he wasn’t willing to change the all might relief pitcher role.
Enough Utley!
Mo induces bloopers, not blasts. Therefore the positioning of a player by the coaches.
“And Manuel is content to play an entire elimination game by keeping his best relief pitchers warming the bench.”
what reliable relief pitchers did he have? none…he was doomed when pedro did not have it?
Charlie Manuel is something. Now he uses Ryan Madson.
Joe Girardi made some controversial moves in the playoffs, but he’s distinguished himself well above some of the other guys, like Manuel, Scioscia, Torre…
Mo only gave up 3+ runs once this year, and it was vs tampa.
Jetes love ya, but pls ground out.
JRod,
Haha. Neither “the book” nor “Accuscore” accounted for a meatball from Mariano.
Watch, they’ll point to his 0-fer, but ignore the other 0-fers. Who cares? We’re 3 outs away. Happy times.
Manuel = Grady Little
Low and in to Jeter for a strike, but a pitch the Yanks haven’t gotten called in their favor ALL NIGHT
In all seriousness, they need to teach Gardner to slap grounders to the left side..
The difference between Yankee fans and Phillies fans isn’t class, education, loudness, or enthusiasm for their team. It’s that they’re accustomed to rooting for a loser (10,000 losses and counting). In fact, this has caused them to root AGAINST other teams more than they root for their team.
ADVERT DISASTER….
New thread… this will self destruct
McCarver said yanks should move melky to right or trade him. so the golden boy be the full time center fielder next season.
Can’t believe it’s been 9 yrs
“what reliable relief pitchers did he have? none…he was doomed when pedro did not have it?”
Didn’t say he had any reliable relievers.
Nonetheless not all of his relief pitchers are equal.
And in the biggest spot in the game – at the point in the game where it was very clear that the yankees score anymore runs the game is over Manuel was content to let his season end on the arm of Happ.
Madson isn’t Mo. Not close. But there is no question he is much, much better than Happ. And matsui isn’t phased against left handed pitchers. And with his plus change you could at least see Madson giving Matsui some trouble.
So instead of using his best pitcher to keep the game in striking distance Manuel brings him in for the two lowest leverage outs of the entire game.
Just nonsensical.
this is it 3 outs Mo please
This is it.
I’ve had the TV muted all night…listening to Sterling…
8 strikes
3 outs
Time to listen to the last inning on the radio
Doesn’t Stairs have a bowling night to get to?
I doubt Joe Girardi is going to make a mockery of our team by changing his number. And what happens when we win our 31st World Series with him?
im about to get a free day off from my boss. i called 7-3 yankees win at 430pm.
I swear, if George shows up to collect the trophy, I’ll shed a tear
#27
I always enjoy the token camera work to show the long faces in the losing dugout as the clinching game veers to its inevitable conclusion.
Faints
They did it!!!
Yankees win!!!
what a beautiful season.
I want Frank
The greatest team in American sports history…. incomparable yet again.
IM HEADED OUT TO SHORTSTOP!!
Congratulations you guys!
I tip my hat to the Yankee team and all their fans. You had an outstanding season.
Nice job Buck. You couldn’t sound less enthusiastic. Jerk.
Pepi,
Exhale. It’s official. This is a great – not good – a great yankee team.
This is history.
you got another ring george.
thanks for giving us the greatest team in sports
Congratulations to the 2009 World Champion New York Yankees, the Steinbrenner family, the front office, Joe Girardi and his coaches, the players and fans. Beautiful ending to a perfect year.
Come on now its a team effort.
How lucky we are.
the Yankees haven’t won a World Series since 10 minutes ago.
Tears in my eyes!!!!!!!
The couldn’t have been a better way to do it. Beating their nemesis, the Angels. Knocking off the defending champion Phillies, with PEDRO on the hill. And doing it all at home
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE IT!!!!!!
I LOVE IT!!!!!!
Happy happy, joy joy
Happy happy, joy joy
ray,
Thank you so much. As usual – very classy of you.
Thanks for being part of the blog.
I’m a lucky fan. First the Giants now the Yankees.
Congrats to everyone!!!!
I am sooooooooo happy!!!!!!!!!!
Aww, Mo and Jorge………
NEW THREAD
A banana cream pie for Girardi???????????????
So much for “this team will never win a championship with Arod”!!
27 Jump! 27 Jump! 27 Jump! 27 Jump!
Long live the Yankees! What a season! Thanks for the thrill and the wonderful ride this season! (Special “hats-off” to Mo, Gozzila and Pettite!)
MVP to Mo. He was the difference, not only in reality but as a safety blanket for the whole team.
This is so awesome! I am just in awe! WHO IS GOING TO THE PARADE?
I just did a victory lap around the house.
I’m so ecstatically excited and near tears at the same time.
Going out to throw TOILET PAPER ROLLS
Like Micheal Kaye SEEEEEEEEEEEEYA
This is all the more golden when hering the depressed sound in Buck’s voice. I saw his and McCarver’s bodies flying out of the broadcast booth….hand in hand, in a joint suicide pact.
Thank you, Yankees for a great season and the Lohud bloggers for a lot of fun. See you in the spring
There’s nothing that I can add.
LET’S GO YANKEES!!!
Congrats to the Yankees and to all the fans here.
Was that Xavier Nady??
Ray, you’re such a classy guy – thank you!
This team had a great feeling about it all year, but it’s soooooooo hard to get to the WS and I think I only really now appreciated just how hard it is.
Matsui MVP?
new thread to celebrate the WORLD CHAMPIONS!
joe buck just unanimously declared tool of the year!
I am happy for A-Rod!!!
Wish many more come to him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
we are the luckiest fans
GO YANKEES
ray,
I always knew you were a classy guy, but that is the height of it.
Thanks.
Predicted ESPN article: 200 billion, Old, Purchased Pitching, Bam Box, 2004, etc. Suck it ESPN! 4 core players from 15 years ago and Arod!
Got to be happy for AROD!!!!!!!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOO
About time. Appreciate this one.
A YEAR OF PIES
Pretty amazing in the modern era. To do it with 3 starters, a un-hittable reliever and with only half the team hitting. You could give the MVP to any of about 5 guys and not have a strong argument.
ENDS WITH TEARS IN THE EYES.
Wow.
A lot of great players just got their first rings.
And a lot just got another one.
Many thanks, Ray. You’re always a class act.
You know, it’s still not too late to be a part of the evil Empire. You’d be most welcome.
Of course, you realize that joining up with the Empire this late, you wouldn’t get the big, diamond encrusted Championship ring that the rest of us get, but, you will get a smaller version.
Ken Rosenthal is such a leprechaun amongst giants around these guys, lol.
CHAMPIONSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Counting down to someone in the media mentions Yankee payroll … 5 .. 4… 3… 2 ….
I’m glad for Alex!!!!
Brandon! When you are done with Kate’s movies,post your reviews here!
YAY Yankees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Congratulations to the 2009 WS MVP, Hideki Matsui. Well deserved to a class gentleman.
Matsui awesome
Tears flowing now
This is great for AROD!
WAY TO GO YANKEEEEES!!!!! Just got in from the car… listening to the ninth and the first part of the postgame on WCBS. (Let’s hear it for AM radio at night!)
Do we get to see Girardi get pied?
Somebody asked Ryan Howard if losing Hurt more than winning.
????
Congratulations to all Yankee fans. I have been a Yankee fan for 40 plus years and after a while you live and die with every pitch …. Regular season and the post season ! Its moments like this that make you really appreciate how good life is. I wish I was back in NY with all of you ! Party on !
Cheers !
