Blogging the Parade
Just wanted to let you guys know that I’ll be live-blogging the parade right here – sort of like a game post, but with more confetti – so check here starting at 11 a.m. for all types of commentary, updates and texted-in reports from our man on the scene, Chad Jennings.
Get some sleep tonight. Big day of celebrating for Yankees fans tomorrow.

Erica, your mistake was not believing me! You can’t guess it. I mean, you could, since I went to a real place with a real type of food, so it’s theoretically guessible, but… you won’t guess it. You want an extension? Is that what I’m hearing? In this contest, extensions are given to nice people, so it’s no problem. But you could have one minute or 27 minutes, you won’t guess it. So just give up!
*******
Okay Nick. I give in. Why don’t you just tell me?
See you tomorrow sam! LETS GET READY TO P-A-R-T-Y

Letterman time!
Hiya Erica!! Did you see the Google Doodle pic I sent you last night. That may just be the cutest one ever and top the Big Bird one!
******
No……… I really stink. Checking my facebook now
Angel-
I don’t have anything from you
I may have accidentally gotten rid of it
In honor of Andy Pettitte I think Nick ate at Dairy Queen.
My guess would be: Oreo Brownie Earthquake.
I went to a Puerto Rican restaurant in San Rafael called Sol Food. Seemed appropriate for a New York Yankees celebration, plus they stay open late.

I posted it on your wall.. I think.
It was so late.. and I’d finished a whole bottle of wine *gulp* (thus today was HELL at work) LOL
Nick-
I do not think I would have gotten that…. ever
I wish I could go

YES!!!!!!!! So cute! I am hoping tomorrow is Ernie day
Yankees coming up next on Letterman!
I am DVRing Letterman. Its bedtime. I have a parade to attend tomorrow!!!
Good night Yankee people!!!!!!!!
I knew you wouldn’t get it, I wasn’t bluffing. I suspect DT guessed wrong because he wants to be placed in the Benfica Pool with you… I would stay out of the deep end.
It is seriously cute!
They change at midnight, I think. Did you know they are referred to as “Google Doodles” and there is actually a whole page Google Logos that tracks them over the years and for each country? Its pretty cool.
Aw man… that was my second guess.
I would have gotten the Pollo Al Horno in honor of Alex and Kate.
Jeter, Pettitte and the other guy are on next!

bru, thats great but who do you suggest? Lackey is going to want a huge contract and I don’t think the Yanks will commit it to him after last offseason. Burnett and Andy are pretty good. Sure it would be great to have a legit #2 but I’m not sure who that would be…Joba is gonna be in the pen
————————————————————
joba might end up in the pen but he will not start out that way
the problem with this blog is no matter what name or trade scenario is thrown out there every single person argues against everything & gives you a ton of reasons why like they know but the reality is they know nothing just like myself
i think we need a number 2 or 3 pitcher & believe we can get one
who knows or cares who it is?
it can be done that is all that counts
if i can trade joba or huhes for a solid # 2 pitcher i do it even if it takes another player or 2
hughes & joba in the rotation at the same time is way to risky
we also have mitre, gaudin & kennedy
And how exactly am I supposed to work? Sam, you guys are the best – thank you! I will be taping the parade on YES and MLB and will watch over and over during the winter.
“do I want to get caught in the deep section of the pool with DT????”

Good Job DT!!!
Okay… really going to bed now.
Good night Yankee people!!!
The MLB network just went through all the predictions everyone made for 2009. Only Harold Reynolds, Al Leiter, and Mitch Williams of all people correctly picked the Yankees winning it all. Williams actually predicted the Yankees beating his beloved Phillies.
For 2010:
Al Leiter picked the Yankees over the Cubs
Harold Reynolds picked the Phillies over the Yankees (how’s that going to happen when they have no starters other than Lee and no bullpen)?
Barry Larkin picked the Angels over the Cubs (I’m sure the Angels will be much better w/o Lackey).
They clean up nice.
Buddy, I’ve been there twice, once to the sit-down place and once to the little late-night place — they’re a block apart in downtown San Rafael. Pretty good, but I don’t know if it’s worth crossing a bridge for. A good option for central Marin, though.
Hey, congrats on #27!!!!!!!
Jeter, Po, and Andy all clean up nicely
rumor has it girardi might change his number to 28
Don’t sleep on DT.
Jete’s is quite the smartass. LOL
Wow Jorge & Andy look good.
Andy Pettitte. Living proof that a smattering of grey hair and a cajun accent can be smokin’ hot.
Okay, I got that out of the way now. I’ll go back to being usual self now, LOL.
LOL and people say Jeter is a wooden interview. That was pretty amusing, turning that question back on Letterman.
Where is MO?
Thanks Nick, congrats to you too.
I find out next week what the gender of 2nd kid will be, if it’s a boy, I’m pushing for Mattingly to be his 1st name. Gotta strike while the iron is hot with the wifey.
Jeter is funny. Its nice seeing Jorge Smile.
haha, of course arod jokes
LOL this is great. First, the guys all look so handsome. Andy working at a Dairy Queen? Then, later, he threw that back at Dave -something to the effect of “when I worked at the DQ”…….Andy is sharp tonight!
Jeter’s so smooth – “I don’t have kids in high school, so I can play until I’m 50″…
They all look so relaxed and happy!
I just laughed for the first time regarding baseball all year.. I think it’s finally sinking in…
They showed that Arod picture… I saw that somewhere else…is that real?
Goodnight Erica.
I’ve been watch Derek for a long time now.
You should see me outside of Starbucks with babies.
“They showed that Arod picture… I saw that somewhere else…is that real?”
Yes, that happened during the LAA series. We commented on it on the blog when it happened.
I like that Andy always thinks about his family first. Thats cool that he wants to be with his kids. I admire that.
Jeter is amusing, with his comments. Posada has a nice smile
Dave, they didn’t make the playoffs, period………

Buddy, ‘Mattingly’ might be a tough sell… although it might sound better if you push ‘Molina’ as the backup option.
Laura: I heard some big non-news about Lost.
I think thats nice too, Angie. His family is clearly important to him. Its really refreshing.
HIDEKI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!SAN!!!!
Matsui!
Matusi!
That was good.
Matsui cleans up nice too.
What?
They make Matsui stand in the back!
Get him out front!
“Laura: I heard some big non-news about Lost.”
You care to share?
That was the greatest call by Sterling… To hear a grown man yelling A Thrilla from Godzilla, the Sayonara Kid… it just sends tingles down your spine.
Where was MO?
You know I’m really happy for Matsui. He seems like a really nice guy and its about time he got some recognition. If last night was his last Yankee game then thats about the best send off you could ask for.
I wasn’t sure you’d want to know, since you are so averse to spoilers. But this is like an anti-spoiler spoiler. So:
“I’m hearing from Lost sources that every single shot of the first few episodes are so revealing that the producers have convinced ABC to NOT SHOW A SINGLE FRAME before the new season airs. No promo scenes, no photos, no nada! So you will be completely in the dark, but it is for good reason: The twists they’re planning are so good, you will WANT to be surprised. Trust me. Your mind gonna go kaplewey.”
“LOL! Has anyone ever told you that you’re so sharp you’ll cut yourself?”
au contraire Angel … one of the trolls last week said I wasn’t one of the sharpest tools in the LoHud shed.
Holliday filed Free Agency today,I suspect Boras wants the cards to pay up.
Hi everyone!
Just wondering, who get WS rings? Only active roster or everyone that had played in the season?? Or something else?
Thanks!
I like Holliday but I don’t know if he’s worth what Boras will try to get.
Nick, that explains why the teaser they did show recently was clips of old episodes. I think that’s a good tactic. I don’t want to know anything until it airs.
“Just wondering, who get WS rings? Only active roster or everyone that had played in the season?? Or something else?”
Everyone who makes an active contribution to the blog in 2009 gets a LoHud WS ring.
WS shares are different. They are based on months of blog service and voted upon by those who sit at the pancake table.
IMO – When some folks find out Pete Abe is getting a ring and full share, it will get ugly.
“LOL! Has anyone ever told you that you’re so sharp you’ll cut yourself?”
au contraire Angel … one of the trolls last week said I wasn’t one of the sharpest tools in the LoHud shed.
****************************
Ahh true. LOL I had forgotten that. But consider the source that it came from a troll that was vying for the title of the dullest and most useless tool in the shed… well then it’s all relative.
I’m just glad I picked Matsui for the final round of Erica’s Lucky Uniform game.
Laura: Yankee baseball sustained me until now, but the wait from here on out until the season premiere is going to get tougher and tougher.
Joba was just on Fallon.
Hey guys what did you think about Pete A comparing the Jeremy Hermida deal Epstein did to Cashman getting Swisher ?

Hey does anyone know where us out-of-towners might be able to catch the parade live-streamed on the internet? Thank you!

Hermida has poor on base skills, so it wasn’t an apt comparison by Pete. Shocking. Unless he was just trying to intimate that it was a buy low situation. At the same time, Hermida was probably going to be non-tendered in a few weeks, so in buying low, the Sox may have overpaid.
Jeremy November 6th, 2009 at 12:46 am
Hey guys what did you think about Pete A comparing the Jeremy Hermida deal Epstein did to Cashman getting Swisher ?
______________________________________________________
I think Swisher was acquired in part due to his vivacious personality and laidback nature. He adds levity to the locker room. His onfield contributions are important but his character makes him unique.
I don’t know a lot about Hermida but I doubt he is notorious for having a fun-loving personality like Swisher. I don’t think Hermida will have as much impact in the locker room as Swisher.
Hey guys what did you think about Pete A comparing the Jeremy Hermida deal Epstein did to Cashman getting Swisher ?
–
Its similiar in that they are both outfielders. Except Hermida is lazy and boring, and also was only good once.
Swisher had a history of being good and skills.
Brandon Kiernen (?) espn radio had Tim K. on who said that the Yankees did well because they paid attention to the small things. mentioned Swisher, marte, and hinske (lol, he really is a lucky charm).
BK (card-carrying Yankee fan) asked a really good question, “Is the Yankees winning the WS good or bad for baseball?”
And almost unanimously, even Yankee haters, said it was good.
Lots and lots of good points were brought up.
Personally, I think the Yankees star power brings a lot of attention to the sport. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, you can’t keep your eyes off of ‘em.

im on the bus now on my way hope im not too late
I don’t see a whole lot of similarities been the swisher and hermedia moves. Hermedia was a top prospect that to this point has been a bust. Swisher has had sucess at the big league level, can play mulitple positions (remember when they got him we didn’t have Tex yet) and is a great clubhouse guy.. the red sox are just rolling the dice here whereas the Yankees new more what they were getting with swisher
Just watched the Letterman segment on the web. Priceless! Jeter is so engaging (even if he isn’t “engaged”), Andy’s as nice as can be, and Jorge is the “serious” one. I guess we will have gone Matsui’s entire tenure in NY without hearing him say more than “Thank You” in English. But he looked great and so happy.
I was so tired I fell asleep early last night and didn’t DVR the Letterman show. So happy for the internet!
Is Hermida another guy that will benefit from the Monster? Wouldn’t you think the Red Sox might target guys who would be able to take advantage of that wall?
To all who are headed out to the Parade – have a great time. You have a beautiful day for it. I can’t wait to watch. I promised my husband I’d re-join the world after today (after spending the entire day basking in the glow of the fact that the Yankees won the World Series, actually watching Francessa, because I knew even he couldn’t ruin the accomplishment and wanting to hear Cash and Girardi).
I have to tape the parade, but will listen to it on the radio. I’m most excited to see the new guys’ reaction – they’ve never, ever seen anything like this. I will be focused on the SP float – I expect to see them look dumbfounded as zillions of pieces of confetti rein down on them, lol
Doreen,
Hermida is probably their replacement for Baldelli. In other words, he will rarely see the field unless Drew gets hurt. Word is that he is terrible defensively, and very slow-footed. He has batted under .260 3 out of his 4 years, has a little power, and strikes out a ton.
If he sees a lot of playing time in Boston, that is good for us, because it means they lost Bay and missed out on everybody else. Of course, Boston will then say Hermida is the guy they targeted all along, but it looks to me like Theo has gotten a real early start on his low-risk, no-reward quest.
I’m sure someone like SJ44 has already mentioned this but the Bobby Abreu deal – 2 yrs @ 19 mil basically sets the market for Johnny Damon. They are both older guys who have lost a lot of defensive ability but can still hit with the best.
I think Damon will re-sign with the Yanks at something around 2 yrs 20 million. However, that might be a bit low simply because Boras is Damon’s agent and the Yankees always overpay.
Even 2 yrs 24 million would be acceptable. Not a ton of money for such a great player, I’d definitely welcome that.
Patrick,
Somehow, I don’t think the Yankees will be willing to go more than a year to re-sign Damon. Or, that’s my opinion, at least. I have a bad feeling that he is really close to the edge of the cliff. If it takes 2+ years committment to re-sign him, let him walk. It’s a tough decision, but the right one, I think.
http://www.northjersey.com/spo....._fall.html
Those comebacks were forged by more than just talent. It was from the Yankees’ limitless belief in their own superiority. As one major league executive said with envy: “The difference was how much the Yankees believed they could come back and beat you in their last at-bat. That kind of confidence is un-quantifiable.”
**IMO, this is the essence of the 2009 Yankees……
Give me Matsui over Damon. Put Melky in left, Austin Jackson in center.
Apparently, Damon already told Boras that he’s not going to take a big contract to sign with a bad team…….I’m sure he’s also told Boras that he wants to re-sign with the Yankees. As I said last night, I’m a sentamentalist – I hate the business side of sports at times (like when it comes to making tough decisions with players)
Erica-check out Google ASAP!! It’s Bert and Ernie day

I can’t wait to watch Letterman when I get home tonight. Unfortunately I feel asleep pretty early (I feel nice and refreshed this morning though!)
I’ve always liked Bert better than Ernie……and Cookie Monster rules the world (along with Oscar the Grouch). I hate Big Bird, lol
If they let Matsui walk, the Yanks will make a big mistake. A rotating DH is stupid. If you want to rest someone, sit em on the bench.
Resigning an old Damon to play the field isn’t getting younger.
an older dh is fine.
I agree with Betsy, Jackson isn’t ready.
I don’t want to sign Holliday or Bay. That means Damon is the best option in left. I’m fine with a 2 year deal for him.
To be quite honest, I want Damon and Matsui back next year.
http://www.nydailynews.com/spo.....arade.html
“They’ve been with us all year,” Burnett said. “I’m waiting for that parade, because those fans are just as much a part of this as we are. To share this with them is what it’s all about.”
Burnett credits the veteran presence of Jeter, Pettitte, Rivera and Posada for helping to form a bond inside the clubhouse that allowed the Yankees to endure their share of adversity throughout the season.
“They say chemistry wins, and it did this year,” Burnett said. “It’s such a blast to be a part of this. The veterans that have been here, Jeter, Posada, Pettitte and Mo, they took us new cats under their wings and showed us how to do it in New York. It means a lot more when you achieve your goal. The sweeps and beatings we took early, we learned from those. This group went through a lot.”
***It’s amazing how this team really appreciates the fans – there is a real bond between us, in large part because of this appreciation. This is a very, very special team.

Betsy, Bert and Ernie are my favorites. I could never, ever choose between them. LOL How can you hate Big Bird?!!
I don’t understand why some of my posts are getting blocked by the filter.
Mark in Tampa -
Makes sense about Hermida.
Basically, the post that got blocked talked about how Damon and Matsui may very well be the best available, that they are New York tested, that it won’t be about money as much as it might be about length of contract, that I would love both of them back, but that I think it will take about a month before the Yankees make a decision and/or come to an agreement with either one of them. I think the Yankees will take a look-see to see what’s available, but that this year’s field of free agents is not a particularly good one and it would be worth bringing Damon and Matsui back for one year (maybe with an option year) as “place holders” until prospects can slip into the roles, or until better free agents or good trades present themselves.
Good stuff Doreen, I agree completely.
That’s ridiculous, a Triple-A .300 hitter with 24 SB and only 2 E and turns just 23 in February is very close to MLB ready.
Much and all as we all want to keep the band together, I struggle to see how Matsui and Damon both come back unless it’s for about $ 15 Million combined. They will have to sit more and an improvement defensively for the OF needs to be added.
Of course depending on what Pettite decides acquiring a quality starting pitcher might take priority over any other move(s).
Hermida is pretty solid Bay insurance but he will not like all the attention up in Bahston.
86w183
I believe the problem with Jackson was the strikeouts. He had a better first half than second half, but with minor leagues, perhaps he was working on a particular skill second half. He may be one year away, he may have a great spring training and make the team right away or be an in-season replacement. No way to really know. Melky was not ML-ready when he got the initial call.
Both Damon and Matsui had solid years for the Yankees this season. Girardi excelled at “rotating” his players, keeping them healthy and fresh. This is why I think they could afford to re-sign both (short-term, of course). The only problem with Matsui is his utter inability to play the field (unless his knees get markedly better this off-season) which results in his being reduced to a pinch-hitter in interleague play. But he is a good pinch hitter, no?
It may be important to keep this team together as much as possible following this season. If Damon or Matsui had not had such good seasons, it would be a no-brainer. But they did. So it’s not.
Thanks for the links Betsy- good stories. The come back wins are a self fullfilling prophecy. The Rays and Sox had that in ’08. This year I never got worried if the Yankees got a few runs behind at first, b/c I always thought they could come back.
Sounds like the parade is going to be crazy.
I agree Doreen and Mark, I would rather have Damon/Matsui over Bay/Holliday/whoever. And of course, I hope Andy comes back.
Damon chemistry could be important
I wonder how Torre felt watching the yanks close it out. It had to be a blow to his ego that Girardi won so quickly, especially when Torre kept getting bounced out of the playoffs in the first round.
Big winner: Cole Hammels. I have no doubt, that deep down, he did not want to take the mound for Game 7.
I think it will come down to how the organization feels about the prospects and when they will be ready, as well as how long a deal the various players are looking for.
Damon has had some struggles in the outfield, but he has also made some very good plays. He hits well, he still runs well enough to steal some bases.
Matsui is a great DH. He probably can’t play the outfield with his knees. He may decide to hang up his cleats or may want to go back to Japan. He has said he wants to play the field again, but I don’t see that happening with the Yankees. The marketing that Matsui brings in helps pay for him, but it takes up the DH role which Damon has expressed some interest in.
There has been talk about Jackson not being quite ready for prime time yet, though the feeling is that he is getting close and may be ready by mid season.
I am torn as I really like both players and think they can continue to contribute to winning games. I don’t think Jackson would be able to replace a bat like Damon’s or Matsui’s. Most minor league players show a big decrease in their BA when they come up.
I am sure that the Yankees scouting have done a lot of evaluating. Cashman has a number of tough decisions to make.
Molina will probably be let go.
Cashman won’t let sentimentality rule his decisions. He showed that with Abreu, who still can play. Experience vs. youth. Its striking the right balance that helped this team win the championship.

Damon chemistry could be important
================================
He seems pretty boring. Its not like he’s swisher or AJ.
Yankee buses arrived in lower Manhattan.
86w183,
Unfortunately I disagree completely. Austin Jackson needs another year in AAA or at least until he shows he can hit at a higher level. His defense is ready, he’s a good baserunner but he simply does not have a major league ready bat right now.
He hit for a high average in the first half but a lot of that was due to luck, he never really drove the ball. He has a ton of power potential but he never showed any power in 2009. And the worst point is, he strikes out A LOT. The strikeout rate is a very bad sign for Jackson. If he had a ton of power we could overlook his strikeouts but he simply doesn’t. Even at his peak he will probably only hit 20-25 HR.
Hopefully it’s a problem that can be improved upon but until it is, he is nowhere near major league ready.
PLEASE. Would someone capture or record the Parade and City Hall and create a DVD or post the AVI online to download??(for those who have to work today). I hope its gonna pop up somewhere.
Matsui should come pretty cheap, just because of the market. He is DH only, so that cuts the teams in half. Those willing to sign a veteran DH with so-so knees cuts it in half again. Some, like Boston, have a DH(sort of). Then Vlad, Thome, Giambi, and a few other DH only types will be on the market. The teams will be able to name the price, not the other way around.
So I think the Yanks could get Matsui back for @5M for 2010. The only wild card is if he feels insulted and won’t play for that. His other option is to take a farewell contract in Japan for Arod type money.
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/articl.....8;c_id=mlb
CC on Jay Leno tonight
I think one thing that the Yankees really need to consider when deciding in matsui is who is going to hit behind and protect arod if they let him walk.. They have nobody else on the current roster that teams won’t just pitch around arod to get to. Posada will be a year older and cano isn’t diciplined enough at this point to swing at strikes.. If they let hideki go then they will have to sign a quality bat or arod will see nothing to hit next year
Erin, he’s got an annoying voice, lol. I also loved Grover, especially when he was the waiter – remember those scenes with the guy who always found a fly in his soup? This is Kermit the Frog with a Muppet News Flash……lol
Joel Sherman, I think, is underestimating how much the Yankee fans love this team. In his article today, he says they aren’t as good as 1998 and 1927 (obviously) and not as beloved as the 1996-2000 teams because they are less home-grown. I don’t know – obviously 1996 and 1998 teams are very special to Yankee fans, but IMO, this team has bonded with the fans and I do think the fans adore this group (particularly because this team was fantastically fun this year). Also, there were plenty of free agent pickups (or vets from trades, like Tino) on those dynasty teams….it wasn’t ALL home grown talent.

betsy, are you the same person as the Betsy above?
blake,
I think that is a given. They will not let Matsui walk and sign/trade for nobody. It is likely that which one they sign depends on the type of player that is available for replacement. If the best player they can get is a good defensive outfielder with some speed and a no 2 type hitter, Damon goes, Matsui stays. The opposite if all they can get is a power hitter with little defensive skills.
betsy-I love Grover too. I always felt sorry for him that he had to keep taking the soup back. LOL I LOVED Kermit’s news reports, especially his little trench coat

_______________________________
Damon was a key in recruiting CC to the team. He may give poor interviews, but he is always talked about being a free spirit in the clubhouse. He may not be like Swisher, so what? I remember seeing the picture of Damon sitting with the mascot of the Rays doing meditation.
I think he brings a good deal to the club.
This “Empire State of Mind” is starting to grow on me, especially the Alicia Keyes part.
Abdababdaserser-wasn’t Damon also a key factor in recruiting AJ? I seem to remember hearing that somewhere.
Personally I have been much more emotionally attached to this team than the late 90s teams.. It could be because in older but I think it has to do with the fact that I actually like every player the Yankees have right now. for the most part they just seem like fun loving nice people. There are no Jeff nelsons or Roger clemens in this team
Erin, I think Damon had some to do with talking to AJ, but I don’t think he played as big a role with him as he did with CC. I think there were a number of players who talked to AJ.
With CC, Damon and his wife courted CC and the whole family. It was almost like a full court press he put on with CC.
I agree Blake, there isn’t anyone on this year’s team that I don’t like. They all seem to appreciate the fans, and they have done so much community service this year.

mark. I think the only decision is whether to go after holliday or not. (I’m not interested in bay). If you decide that you don’t want to commit to holliday then who else out there is as good a #5 hitter as matsui? To me the decision is either to sign holliday or attempt to get matsui to accept a short term deal to hit behind Alex.
I am not so sure about Holliday, didn’t he struggle in the AL? And wont the Cards want to re-sign him?
If Damon and Matsui truly want to come back as they’ve said they want to, they should both know it’s only for their bats.
Damon is what he is with a glove plus a weak arm and Matsui’s knees don’t allow him to be in the outfield.
Reasonable money for either ($8M) with a team option for 2011 could do it. Hinske won’t be back. If A-Jax turns heads during spring training, he could force Brett Gardner back to AAA.
Molina is not likely to be signed and Hairston should be signed.
Good Day NY sucks – They don’t even know who the Core Four is. They forgot Mariano Rivera…these people should not be covering this parade.
Do you people really like Burnett? The pie thing is very funny, but the guy drives me crazy and doesnt make me warm and fuzzy. I dont really dig A.J.
yes I like AJ and the pies in the face. The team needed to loosen up and I am glad they did. they even sported some, not much, facial hair during games. Loose is good, tight is not right. Many occassions saw AJ in toronto vs our Yanks and he was lights out. I know he can be that pitcher and help us. I guess he already has.

Comparing Hermida to O’Neill is laughable.
It’s not about stats. It’s about talent.
Jeremy Hermida isn’t very good.
He’s always hurt and doesn’t always play hard. Two things never attributed to O’Neill.
Just like with Penny and Smoltz last year, another overvalued trade by the Red Sox.
*******************************************************
that’s exactly right it is about talent. Hermida is avery talented ballplayer who hasn’t reached his full potential yet and maybe never will.
He is however a more talented player at this age in his career than Paul O’Neill was.Paulie was a late bloomer and was fortunate to come to this organization and have good people help him to realize his potential.
If the RedSux can help Jeremy to realize his potential they will have an All Star caliber player on their hands which is why I’ve been saying for 2 years that the Yankees go get him.
Playing for an organization Like the Yankees or the RedSux as opposed to the Marlins is a helluva motivating tool for a young player just ask Lowell.
Paulie btw had anything but an all star caliber career going before he came to us….
I’m by city hall plaza…it’s going to get crazy here soon!
Hermida is good but not that good. He’s also a jerk. Not a nice guy at all and he doesn’t listen to his coaches. Probably a 4th outfielder for the Sox, they will still go after Holliday or Bay IMO.
blake,
I agree with you on Bay, but I really don’t like Holliday either. Some guys who could be available:
Rios-CHW got him for nothing, may want to get rid of his contract for little player/prospect cost.
Crawford-Rays may trade him, he is probably the best case guy, but I think it is about a 1% chance they would trade him to NY or Boston.
Delmon Young-could be had, probably, except that Cash and the Minn GM have had trouble on deals before. Don’t really want him anyway.
BJ Upton-I think the Rays have to make a choice to keep either him or Crawford, and Upton has had conflicts there. They may be more willing to trade him to the Yanks b/c they view him as a bad attitude guy. Would love him in NY, move Melky to left, there is enough strong vet leadership to keep him in line.
Jermaine Dye-Don’t really want him, he is starting to get up there in age, he has only had one really good season, but he would be a legit no 5 hitter.
AJ is inconsistent but lets not forget how good he can be. He was the stopper early in the season, when CC and Wang struggled. He held the Sox scoreless in the epic 15 inning game. He won the all important game 2 of the WS.
I like the pie thing too, it was fun to wait for and watch.

kate-couldn’t have said it better myself! I think he really added a lot to the clubhouse, and it’s obvious he loves being a Yankee.
I never said Austin Jackson was ready to be an every day starter, just that the comment he was “nowhere near MLB ready” made no sense.
Ideally he would spend a year in Scranton and make the strides that have been suggested in adding power and reducing strikeouts.
If Matsui and Damon would both take one year deals totalling something in the $ 15-18 Million range I would probably do that. But I think nothing happens until they determine what will happen with Pettite and whether or not pursuing a starter via free agency (Lackey, Webb?) or trade market (Halladay, Harden, Haren?) has to happen.
If they add an OF, Dye would be fine with me, but again cannot be long term. My dream would be to trade for Andre Ethier.
either damon or matsui need to come back. they prove they can do it on the big stage, others from outside the organization have not or may not, and go 0-for in many big games.
“If the RedSux can help Jeremy to realize his potential they will have an All Star caliber player on their hands which is why I’ve been saying for 2 years that the Yankees go get him.”
The Florida Marlins are a perversely run team. But one thin they are very good at and have to be good at because they refuse to spend any money is the evaluation of young players.
That the Marlins were going to non-tender Hermida and then traded him to Boston for not that much speaks volumes for how little the Marlins thought of Hermida as a “talent.”
And the Marlins had a huge sunk cost in Hermida in terms of opportunity cost. This was a guy they thought would be a franchise cornerstone and they gave him every opportunity to succeed.
And he didn’t. He never came close.
It’s remarkable how any personnel move the Red Sox make is automatically deemed some form of genius – either explicit or hidden.
Hermida has two really big problems. He hits for very little power and has never shown too much in the way of translating his tools into major league power. And he simply cannot hit left handed hitting.
Power is often said to be the last thing that comes for young players. But that doesn’t mean it always arrives. In fact, it often never does because the player – even a strong one with good bat speed – simply doesn’t have the swing plane needed to hit home runs/ hit for power.
It’s likely that playing in Florida depressed Hermida’s power, but not that much. Fenway isn’t going to help him that much as a left handed hitter who doesn’t go the other way with much authority.
And the other things which is always dicey with high-ceiling prospects who hit left handed is how they will adjust to major league left handed pitching. Left handed pitching in the minors is both infrequent and generally terrible. So you can never be certain how left handed hitters will react to quality left handed pitching until they get to the bigs. Great case in point – Jay Bruce. Minor league player of the year who has been very mediocre in the pros and just can’t hit left handed pitching.
Hermida can’t hit left handed pitching. And it’s really unlikely at this point that he’s going to.
He’s a fine guy as a back up – but on a good team that’s all he is.
It’s remarkable how much credit is thrown on the Sox for marginal moves. Last winter Brad Penny was going to get back to being the fire balling all star he once was because he would get to work with John Farrell.
Maybe it’s wishful thinking (I can already hear all the “He is what he is.”s), but I believe AJ will continue to get better. His “stuff” really is nasty — I can see why so many of the Yankee players wanted him. He just needs to work on consistency. Whether it’s mental or mechanical or a combination of the two, a good coach and more time with some good veterans, plus being on a team that can pick him up, could really still help him. He seems like one of those guys that matures late. I think he’s come to the Yankees at the right time.

not to harp on the O’Neill/Hermida comparison but we when obtained Paulie he was a career .258 hitter who hit on average 16 homers and was the classic “change of scenery” case….
i’m just of the opinion the with a core of ARod-34,Jeter-36,Posada-39,Pett-38 and Mo-40 we need to get younger as soon as possible and most specifically in our outfield defense being that our entire pitching staff are flyball pitchers.
Damon is terrible defensively in LF,Leche/Gardner combo league average in CF, ans Swish below average in RF.
We need to address this.AJax will certainly help that in the future and maybe Cash tries to skate by for one more year but i’m hoping not.
And anyone who thinks that Damon will accept a one year deal to stay here best think again. He’s quoted in the post as saying “that he’s not interested in a one year deal, that he wants something that is fair and that the Yanks are definitely capable of doing that.”
Boras is comparing Damon playing 140 games to Hank Aaron,Pete Rose and Greg Maddux as guys who played at a high level until 40. Sounds like he’s looking for 3-4 years and $40mil which is insanity for Damon.
I’d much prefer Matsui for one year at 8-10 mil and just promote AJax throw his glove out in center and bat him 9th and let’s get after it with Melky and Gardner in LF
CB
O’Neill was said to not be able to hit Lefties either how’d that work out?
My only opinion is whereas a team like the Marlins can’t afford to wait on Hermida to figure it out(he’d be making $4mil this year which is about 14% of the teams total payroll) teams like us and the Sox can.
And when we talk about hitting for power i mean c’mon we’re talking about Johnny Damon who does not have a power swing and his power is more of a mirage than anybody’s. He’s only hit for power in Yankee stadium and aiming for the pesky pole. Playing in KC and Oakland power wasn’t ever mentioned in his game.
i’m not praising the move as another genius move by Theocratus, that’s gammons and the Bristol boys mancrushing,I’ve neen suggesting since last years hot stove that the Yanks should try to acquire him as i think he could be a good late blooming prospect similar to what Paul O’Neill BECAME when we got him.
just for sh*ts and giggles go look at Paulie’s #’s with the Reds
