Jeter on Letterman; audio slideshow online

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Nov 05, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Well-embedded moles tell me that Derek Jeter will appear on David Letterman’s show tonight, so check that out later on. (Or, just set your DVR since, if you’re like me, there’s VERY little chance you’ll still be awake at 11:30 p.m. tonight).

Also, if you’re looking to pass some time at work, check out this slideshow of images from the World Series narrated by TJN’s terrific photographer Frank Becerra.

UPDATE, 1:30 p.m.: Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte will join The Captain.

UPDATE, 3 p.m.: Sounds like Hideki Matsui will also be in the house.

I almost wish we would go out and spend more money.

In the English Premier League, the top 4 teams are usually the same year in and year out. That is because they spend an inordinate amount more money than the other teams. The League is probably the most popular in the world, regardless. Manchester City spent something like $500 million this last transfer period (trading deadline like). And that is not like the media’s inaccurate reporting that the Yankees spent $400 million this offseason. We did not spend that money, we committed that money over 8 years or so.

The best part about football is that you can outright buy players from other teams rather than trade a Joba or Phil to get a player, you could just buy Roy Halladay for $100 million. I only wish that was the case in baseball. Then the Yankees could really open their wallets.

    Awesome!

I feel bad-I am getting no work done today. It might not have been a bad idea to take a sick day. LOL

I still have not slept since 11am yesterday. I nearly dozed off today at 7 am, but the dogs kept whining, so I had to walk them. Dare I say I am becoming DELIRIOUS.

There is zero chance of me being up for Letterman tonight.

My DVR is a mess cause I am so behind this week

I almost asked if i could leave early today when i asked if I could take off tomorrow. But I thought better of it. Didn’t want to push it

    Good Afternoon Yankee people!

How is everyone doing today? I for one am thrilled even though I think I am getting sick it doesn’t matter :)

So who else is planning on going to the parad tomorrow? I totally and completely recommend it.

PA is getting clobbered ovcer his absurd (and plagiarized) blog entry today essentially claiming the Yankees bought the title. He must have gotten about 50 comments, of which 45 told him how petty and pathetic he is……so he is now deleting them and doing what he does best, getting overly sensitive about it and updating the blog lashing out further.

  12. pat November 5th, 2009 at 1:00 pm

For all the debate that has taken place here on who should play the outfield this year, who would have guessed Swisher, Gardner, Hairston would have been the answer of who was playing out there when the Yanks clinched their 27th. Go figure.

Loved that Cash stayed low. Also love that he met with Chapman at a home playoff game. Imaging how impressed Chapman must have been walking through our stadium and clubhouse?
Can’t imagine that if the money is close he wouldn’t want to be a Yankee wouldn’t you?

  20. Ryan November 5th, 2009 at 1:05 pm

Question to anyone going to the parade: when do you suggest getting there (assuming anywhere along the route is the same) to be near the front of the crowd? I don’t remember from the last time I went in ’98.

I waited all day to hear John Buccigross’ commentary of the highlights from last night.

He devalued everything that went on. He mentioned a 206 million payroll and said “our stimulus package this year was successful”

My personal favorite comes when they show Chase Utley striking out on the check swing, and out of nowhere, with no highlight of it, he says “I thought the first pitch of that AB was outside”

Did he not see the first 4 innings where Andy was getting squeezed like an orange.

Originally being from Nashville this line from Verducci’s column in SI about Matsui brought a smile to my face….

  38. betsy November 5th, 2009 at 1:17 pm

I get attached to all my players, so it’s always heartbreaking to me when they can’t finish their careers in pinstripes. I can’t fathom Damon on another team now……I want all these guys to stay together, but the reality is that they can’t. I hate the business part of sports, I really do.

I’ve always loved Cash and this was just a great year for him. It’s just like him to leave the celebrating (in public) to the players …….His finest moment? No doubt convincing Hal to sign Tex, then swooping in to steal him from the Sox.

I just can’t say enough about this team and how much fun it was to watch them this year – they never, ever gave up; they were the most incredibly resilient team. This is a special team because it IS a team – they all honestly care about each other. The kids were made to feel a part of the team (and not just high profilers like Phil or Joba, I mean Cervelli and Pena as well) as well…..I just am in love with this group as a whole and I suspect fans feel the same way. This is not a boring, corporate team by any means…..

  43. G. Love November 5th, 2009 at 1:18 pm

I’m stunned Pete plagiarized the concept of Chad’s “Wear it” post from a few days ago.

    STUNNED.

As a writer that is about as low as you can go.

I have a feeling he’s starting to feel the heat at his new position and he needs our posts and page hits to justify the role they’ve given him since the Sox community isn’t supporting the blog at all yet since they bowed out of the post season so early.

  44. PittsburghYankeeFan November 5th, 2009 at 1:20 pm

I just read Schilling’s interview–the Extra Bases blog just posted it.

What a total and complete ass.

Curt, you’re not going to the HOF, except as a spectator. So now all you have left is the bloody sock (which is likely steroid marinated) which is right now irrelevant.

Yankees have it over your former team, in all ways, brother. Get used to it.

Keep up the blabbing. Now that the Red Sox are losers again, let’s see how deep the Red Sox Nation really is. Probably pretty shallow, kind of like you.

  45. Erin November 5th, 2009 at 1:21 pm

betsy-I know exactly what you mean. I don’t even want to think about the possibility of Damon or Matsui wearing another uniform next season. So I’m not going to think about it at all-I’m just going to continue to revel in #27!! :)

    G. Love,

Ya, I was just reading that and thinking the same thing…about the whole “wear it” concept.

Talk about a guy doing a 180…he sounds like a bitter man but you have to understand that part of his job as a Sox beat writer is to make some waves so that he can gain readership. He’s still a “good” writer and I’m sure that over the course of his tenure in Boston he’ll do a good job, but he is contradicting a lot of what he used to write about the Yankees. That is what is unfortunate.

  48. betsy November 5th, 2009 at 1:23 pm

Wait, what did Pete do? I’m in the dark…..thanks!

  49. Christina: Pictures from Game 6 of the ALCS and game 1 of the world series on the blog! November 5th, 2009 at 1:23 pm

I am confused. Is the term “just wear it” something Chad derived? Or is it a common baseball term?

  50. Joba the Great November 5th, 2009 at 1:24 pm

That’s after he ripped Chad (or Chad’s replacement in Scranton, to be fair) for asking Hughes the question at MEedia Day about the IL title last year. Pete evidently morphed into Frank Deford all of the sudden. Pete was always a bitter guy on the UConn beat, so it really isn’t surprising that he’s reverted to his old ways.

  51. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 5th, 2009 at 1:24 pm

    Erin,

Hard to even think about next season right now but I take solace in knowing that the Yankees brass will be at work in no time. Hopefully they get some vacation time in between.

  52. Bronx Jeers November 5th, 2009 at 1:25 pm

One of the coolest things about this series was just how confident many of us were after losing game 5.

It was like money in the bank. No worries. Wasn’t a matter of if, only when.

Nothing at all like it felt after game 5 in the 2004 ALCS.

  53. Bob(the original) November 5th, 2009 at 1:25 pm

Stunned that Pete plagiarized? I’m not.

Many of you thought he was the greatest guy in the world when he was here. He’s not. Just another in a long line of leeches trying to make a name/buck for themselves off the Yankees and their fans’ loyalty.

He trashed A-Rod any chance he could because that was the way to generate posts and therefore money/opportunities for himself.

He bowed at the altar of Wang because he wrote a book about him.

He’s a tool. Like I said earlier we should all be thankful he created this blog and even more thankful that he left it and we have much better guys handling it now.

  54. tex's friend November 5th, 2009 at 1:25 pm

    What’s the “IL title”?

  58. Joba the Great November 5th, 2009 at 1:27 pm

Christina, it’s stealing a lead, which is pretty much verboten in journalism. Is it truly “plagiarism”? Probably not. Is it unsavory? Yeah. But again, the Globe has never been shy about plagiarism in the past. Pete’s just using his new playbook over there.

  59. Borat November 5th, 2009 at 1:27 pm

I don’t post much on here, but rest assured, this blog has been my lifeline for much of the last couple of seasons.

It started with Pete, I liked him. I hate him now. He fooled us all and how did we not figure it out? He was after all a HUGE Patriots fan. He kept things objective enough on this blog though.

He said he left for family? He left because he knew this team was special and he couldn’t stomach that for one second.

The guys that have taken over have done a great job, so thanks.

I’m relishing this moment. The Anti-Yankee haters are everywhere, it makes this moment all that much sweeter.

Thank you Yankees, the TEAM OF THE DECADE! WORLD CHAMPIONS!

As Jeter said last night “It’s back where it belongs”.

  60. Erica - always OPPC November 5th, 2009 at 1:28 pm

    I just read Pete’s post-

I have always defended Pete. But his words are even angering me….

Quote from Pete:”The Yankees have several admirable players. But they rose from third place because they simply outspent everybody else on Burnett, Sabathia and Teixeira. It’s not complicated.”

I hate the payroll argument. If only having a large payroll actually guaranteed anything. It doesn’t. Anyone can spend if you want. You still have to execute. Pete should know better. The Mets have a large payroll… they have been golfing this month

  61. G. Love November 5th, 2009 at 1:28 pm

From the perspective of a writer, what Pete did was absolutely low.

Chad had a great post the other night about “wearing it”. It was something, at least for me, I had never heard about in regards to a baseball locker room term. It was insightful.

Pete now has a post up on his blog about “wearing it”. I don’t think it’s a coincidence.

Chad doesn’t own the concept or anything. It’s something he heard in his job over the years and crafted a nice story about.

The fact that Pete several days later stole that concept and used it to run with is despicable. I feel sorry for him.

I understand the audience he’s playing to. I understand he’s trying to get us mad enough to post there so he can justify his job to his new masters.

That doesn’t make it right though. It’s wrong and if I were him I’d pull the whole post down because it’s going to cause more harm than good at this point.

  69. Joba the Great November 5th, 2009 at 1:30 pm

Sun Devil: International League. Either Chad or the guy who replaced him (Pete ID’d the writer as a guy from Scranton) asked Hughes how a World Series title would compare with Scranton’s title the year before. The smartest question (if it wasn’t said in jest)? No. But Pete ridiculing the guy is pretty low, too. Especially since Scranton people (and that paper) had been a very nice resource to Pete while he was here.

  70. Christina: Pictures from Game 6 of the ALCS and game 1 of the world series on the blog! November 5th, 2009 at 1:30 pm

Erica, payroll doesn’t guarantee anything but it certainly helps you.. To say money plays no factor, which I hear often, is ignorant. But to say it guarantees a win is also. You still have to put the right pieces together and everyone has to stay healthy.

How many of you think the Pirates have a chance to win next year? What is their payroll? That’s probably a poor example since their management doesnt put money towards their team, and in fact pockets most of it. But still, money always plays a factor, you can’t deny that.

  71. CR9 November 5th, 2009 at 1:31 pm

    Christina

It is probably a common term that reporters hear all the time, but Chad just did an article using that concept a few days ago. Pete does a different article on the same concept a few days later.

I am not sure it is plagiarism, but I have heard before that he gets much of his ideas from other bloggers sites like, for instance, yours. The fact that he has to go to Lohud to steal the ideas of these guys is putred.

  73. randy l. November 5th, 2009 at 1:33 pm

    CB -

i can see why you say that the yankees and cashman made a calculated gamble that sabathia was a horse they could ride.

and in that sense it wasn’t stealing #27, but it was a very unlikely bet as late mid september when pettitte was in danger of going down with the shoulder and burnett was in a deep slump.

in retrospect , the fact cashman didn’t panic and give up some of the farm for a veteran starter now looks very good.

life is often about making those calculated gambles.

i think you have figured out that i pay attention to posters like you and sj44 who have consistently been behind cashman and his approach.

at the same time, i think i safely say that the cashman of today is more experienced than the one who wanted to roll out hughes, kennedy , and joba at the same time.

even with gms ,experience counts ,and cashman was really new at being fully in charge in 2008.

it is no small concession to cashman when i first said this was a starter post season team with many potential titles to come.

inherent in it was a tip of the hat to cashman

  74. Erica - always OPPC November 5th, 2009 at 1:33 pm

    Christina-

The Pirates are a terrible example. They would probably be decent if ownership stopped trading away any remotely decent player for prospects. Its almosta slap in the face to be a Pirate and not get traded

Money helps. Yes. But it is no guarantee. If it was we would not have waited 9 years for a championship. You still need to go out there and play 162 games and win 11 more…

  75. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 5th, 2009 at 1:33 pm

    Bronx Jeers,

Great point. We really stuck together on here too and maintained optimism. I personally made a point of writing optimistic posts in an effort to calm the suicidal cliff-jumpers this blog houses.

But ya know, the biggest thing is, we all knew (know) that this team was nothing like 2004 for a number of reasons.

I’ve been a fan since the 80s when I was a young feller in awe of Donnie Ballgame’s prowess at 1B. Of all those championships in the 90s…96 was probably my favorite but this one, after all this insane money spent, numerous all stars coming and going, the organization placed a product on the field that created the team chemistry necessary to endure the climb back to the top. That is what the team did and we were all along for the ride backing them up.

    Its a beautiful thing.

  76. Joba the Great November 5th, 2009 at 1:33 pm

And I know Matt Pepin, the guy who hired Pete at the Globe for the Web gig, very well. Pep may see this as driving hits to the site, but such flamer stuff doesn’t last. Pep’s a solid guy. He won’t let Pete run fast and loose if this is how Pete views how to go about doing his new job.

  77. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes November 5th, 2009 at 1:34 pm

In my joy I am devoting a few lines to old Curt. He started it, by being his egocentric blowhard self on WEEI.

I know it’s on a Boston station, but what Schilling said is totally classless.

If I were a Sox fan, I’d be embarrassed by him.

    OK. Fixation now over.

  84. Pat M. November 5th, 2009 at 1:39 pm

SJ, You make a very compelling arguement for Matsui’s departure…..However where exactly will they find a replacement for his 30-100 rbi production when pro-rated….I understand GM’s look 2-3 years up the road, however just looking at 2010, if he departs that leaves a big hole in the lineup and leaves Alex standing alone in the 4 spot…..This not a Giambi like decision, Mats is still a very productive stick…….

  85. Hokiehill November 5th, 2009 at 1:39 pm

the WS section in the hall of fame should also feature a case “full” of air, which was left over from all of Howard’s record setting swing and misses…

I’ve seen a lot of people talking about the “buying championship” talk they’ve heard on the radio, from friends, etc…the amusing thing about this to me is that the same people that will tell you the Yankees bought a championship this year probably laughed in our faces the past 9 years saying “see, money can’t buy championships!”
Don’t let the money people ruin your day…they would trade places with us in a second if they could. Remember, this kind of talk and the Yankee hatred in general, only exist because the Yankees are the best franchise in sports history!

This is not about bitterness, I have a lot of Yankee friends and I am happy for them today.

  87. tex's friend November 5th, 2009 at 1:40 pm

    it’s very simple.

Boston Red Sox fans will always feel inferior to NY Yankee fans, no matter how many titles they win. They wanted a-rod, they wanted tex, they wanted cc, and they all came here instead. of course they would feel insecure and inadequate. but that just makes this even better.

  88. Jeremy November 5th, 2009 at 1:41 pm

Yes, Money does help but it can’t guarantee a World Series victory. If that was the case the Cubs with there 150 + million dollar payroll would have won a title, and the Mets with the second highest payroll would have won a title.

  90. Christina: Pictures from Game 6 of the ALCS and game 1 of the world series on the blog! November 5th, 2009 at 1:42 pm

    Erica,

I could use any team as an example, even the Toronto Blue Jays. Go look up the salary of the Jays when they won their World Series Championship in 92 and 93. Check out their payroll. Though the discrepancy between theirs and the other teams wasn’t nearly as large as the Yankees.

It is one thing if your team has terrible management and doesnt invest into their team, but what if you really cant afford to put together a payroll of over 100 million dollars? Toronto isn’t the best area for baseball as it is relatively known for its hockey. I have no idea how much they technically can invest in their team though

There is always player development when you cant put together a huge payroll, but eventually those guys will leave for bigger and better places. It can be a tough cycle. But then again, if you dont have the money you have to be smarter with the big signings you make. Vernon Wells has really come to hurt that team.

Regardless, again I will state that money guarantees NOTHING; especially in a 5 or 7 game series. But it does help you get there. Just look at the mere fact the Yankees picked up the top 3 free agents this offseason. Cashman deserves HUGE props for this. He did a great job. But he was given the freedom to spend as much as he wanted. But then again, there isnt a limit so any team can, right?

It’s not a coincidence the 4 teams in the LCS has a payroll of over 100 million it just isnt. Yes, you have the occasional Rays or Twins team that falls in but in generally money makes a difference.

I dont know where I am going with this. I am just saying you can’t brush the money aspect aside, because it plays some role; the extent of which I am not sure though.

He’s saying how he talked to the new guys and told them that they were going to hear a lot of talk about how certain things , attitudes etc. are not the Yankee way. And told them to ignore it and to be themselves.

He specifically said that many frowned when Swish was smiling after his strikeout when he was pitching.

He said that he told naysayers to “get over it”

    Pat M,

He is but, there are going to be a lot of players on the market this off-season.

I think the Yankees are going to be active players for some arbitration eligible guys other teams won’t be able to keep.

I also think they need a #2 starter. I would argue they need that more than they need a DH.

You can’t always count on winning a WS with only 3 starters and think all of the young pitchers will project to be significant starters.

Its going to be interesting to see how Cash retools the roster.

I do think there will be changes and those changes will be in line with what Cash has wanted to do the last 4 years.

Younger, more athletic, with payroll flexibility.

If Matsui could play the OF, I would keep him. Since he can’t, I think he becomes the odd man out unless Damon prices himself out of the Yankees market.

  96. Jeremy November 5th, 2009 at 1:45 pm

The Red Sox threw out around 300 million dollars in 2007 in order to win the World Series.

“i can see why you say that the yankees and cashman made a calculated gamble that sabathia was a horse they could ride.”

I was thinking about this issue this morning:

We can FINALLY put to bed the Johan vs. CC debate. If CC didn’t pitch well in the playoffs, this silly argument would definitely rear its ugly head.

    Instead…

CC was at least very good in every start.
CC pitched well on short rest twice – which is something I doubt Johan would be able to do, given his slight stature.

Now if we could just get past the Joba to the BP issue…

  98. tex's friend November 5th, 2009 at 1:47 pm

Yankees do need one starter to compliment CC, AJ, Joba, Pettitte (get him back), Hughes, etc…

Kennedy may get another chance, Wang may come back before the end of next season, but we still need one more starter. not jon lackey. someone younger.

i doubt anyone on this blog sparred with pete more than i did in emails.

    but you now what.

i came to really respect pete for his solid baseball awareness and love for the game.

i went through a lot of his twitter posts last night and they don’t bother me at all.

and does anyone on this blog think that the yankees win it all without signing sabathia, teixeira , and burnett for over 400 million?

so what’s the problem with what he’s saying?

i notice a lot of people who were afraid to speak their mind before when he could answer back are now taking shots .

only if you were someone like gb7 who directly opposed pete to his face gets my respect when taking shots now.

and i like both gb7 and pete.

in the real world it’s sometimes about respect and not necessarily about liking everything abut someone.

    Also,

I have noticed that it happens often that writers covering the same team, the same subject, are often going to have stories that are vastly similar. I’ve often thought to myself that these guys must talk to each other a lot during the time surrounding a baseball game, and it’s reflected in the subject about which they choose to write the next day.

I highly doubt that Pete plagiarized a story about “wearing it.” I am inclined to think this was a topic of general conversation. If two or more writers choose then to focus their column on that subject, I don’t see anything wrong with that.

People are too angry and obsessed with Pete. I don’t read his new blog because I’m no longer his target audience and I KNOW that some things he’s going to write are going to rile me. It’s not personal. I suggest for those of you that get worked up over what he’s writing – don’t read it.

  112. Patrick November 5th, 2009 at 1:56 pm

Here is what I hope Cashman does:

    1. Re-sign Andy Pettitte, this is #1 on the list for a reason. He was a huge part of this team’s success and we need him back.

    2. Re-sign Johnny Damon for 2 years. Despite the minor injuries he tends to get, JD is a very durable player. His swing is perfect for Yankee Stadium and he can still play LF full-time.

    3. Re-sign Hideki Matsui for 1 year. I know that many people will disagree with this point but I just don’t see any replacement for his production – either on the roster or elsewhere.

    4. Non-tender Wang and try to work out a deal with him. This one really kills me to say but it must be done.

    5. Sign Jerry Hairston Jr. to a 2 year deal. Great bench player and he fits in very well with what the Yankees do.

    6. Move Hughes into the rotation and stick with Joba in the rotation.

    7. Maybe sign a guy like Gaudin to a 1 year deal to work as the 6th starter / long reliever

Other than that I think the team is in good shape for 2010. I don’t think Matt Holliday would be a good signing. He’s a very good all around player but he isn’t guaranteed to produce in the AL. For example, we all knew if Tex signed with us he could produce. That is up in the air with Holliday, I’m not convinced he is an elite hitter.

    randy,

I believe Pete Abe is one of the only “smart” sports writers out there. In my opinion, he gets it. He is clearly not a fan of the Yankees but that’s fine, I couldn’t care less.

The only thing that bothers me about Pete is that he basically ripped off Chad’s blog entry on “wearing it”. Literally a day after Chad wrote about that concept, Pete wrote a column on it. That just bugs me.

  115. Joekuh - looking for #28! November 5th, 2009 at 1:59 pm

Randy, you’re absolutely right about the “respect for Pete” issue. We wouldn’t be here if Pete didn’t put in the effort to build this blog. He always went the extra mile to appease us, and now when he leaves people stab him in the back for high fives.

  131. CB November 5th, 2009 at 2:11 pm

    randy,

Everyone hopefully learns from experience. And I think Cashman is no different.

We can rehash 2008 over and over but I’d guess they took a risk on two young starters because the alternatives weren’t great and would have involved giving long term contracts to marginal starters and that would have ruined the long term plan.

But it didn’t work out and I think Cashman and the organization learned a lot from that. Cashman doesn’t strike me as a really ideological guy. He’s flexible and changes. That’s part of why hughes was in the pen this year instead of being sent down. It was a good way to break him into the majors.

Just a guess – but I think the yankees will now more and more break young pitchers in as relievers because the pressure to perform is just so much as a starter given the difficulties of developing while winning now.

Much has been written about the Sox losing Tex to the yanks and how much that hurt.

What really hasn’t been discussed very much is this – why didn’t the Sox make a true run at signing CC?

The Sox sign CC and that’s that. They win this year. They win for several years going forward. They could have afforded him.

But they have an organizational philosophy of not giving pitchers long term deals. Ok fine. They got a ton of credit for that.

But it cost them dearly. They decided not to be flexible in trying to acquire a very special player.

Being pragmatic has a real value. In general that’s how Cashman strikes me. He didn’t go with Kennedy and Hughes in 2008 out of an ideological or intellectual set of reasons. I think it was more pragmatic – the alternatives weren’t great so let’s take a chance during a year where the team is going to be old and unathletic.

They bet the house on the winter of 2009. Everything for the past 2 years pointed to that for the organization.

And that bet has now paid off.

here are some ideas as far as moves the Yanks can and will consider in the offseason

    firstly I’m of the opinion that the Yanks should let both Matsui and Damno move on.Two reasons why;
1-we need to continue to get younger, more athletic and in the process get cheaper as well
2-Damon and Matsui both will get 2-3 yr offers from other teams and we CANNOT even consider either for more than 1yr and cheap (ie 5-7mil…so assuming both are gone

Free Agents- Rick Ankiel is a very intriguing option to me as 2yr test…LH legit 35hr power bat who would give us a gold glove caliber CF next year and when AJax is ready Ank can slide over to right and be a gold glover there as well
an OF of Melky-LF/AJax-CF/Ankiel-RF would be prob the best in the majors defensively which makes your entire pitching staff that much better and although all are young developing hitters with the production we get from our infielders and Posada as a foundation for our offense we can afford to go through some learning curve pains as Long brings these guys along as hitters.

I am also all for giving Juan Miranda who we have under contract for ‘10 @ 500k an oppurtunity to win the primary dh role with this team…again he’s shown himself to be a legit power rbi guy in our minor league system and has actually been an all star everywhere we’ve sent him (AA,AAA and AFL)and was a former star in Cuba…he could emerge next
year like Kendry did for the Angels this year if given a shot but at the minimum he’s a legit lH power bat that murders RHP and in our stadium that plays big….

via trade some ideas are Josh Willingham for LF or Jeremy Hermidia who was a former #1 pick talent whose skillset is similar to Paul O’Niell and who could really blossom and realize his talents in the Bronx in our lineup. Again his tools great eye, more walks than Ks and LH power bat could really come through on our team and he’s only 28…just some ideas

and for all of you guys who may look at the low batting average with guys like Ankiel or Hermidia remember Brosius wasn’t a great player and had a low career BA before coming to us but for 4 years he sure was a great Yankee…

    Thoughts?

“I dont know where I am going with this. I am just saying you can’t brush the money aspect aside, because it plays some role; the extent of which I am not sure though.”

    christina-

i think there’s a hidden aspect of the yankee payroll that jacks up the resulting high payroll , but is actually an important part of it.

on the business side of the game it’s show business . the yankee business model at it’s best has the aspect of show business in it.

when i was a bullpen catcher in the ill fated senior league( bad name because the starting team had an avg age of 36) , i saw this problem between putting out the best players for the money on the field vs. putting out the players who would fill the stands.

in our outfield , our manager clete boyer could put out big name guys like cesar cedeno, jose cruz sr. omar moreno, ron leflore, hal mcrae, al oliver or al cowens. you may be too young to know these names but at least four knocked on the hall of fame door.

the problem was that a triple a veteran named tack williams was a better player at the time.

    http://www.baseball-reference......lson001mic

please click on the above link and look at his career in the minor leagues.

it will tell you a lot about how the game works and how random it is.

tack wilson is one of the best players you never heard of.

but if clete put out a team of tack wilsons , that team would win more games but no one would come and buy tickets.

the yankees could win with a 130 million payroll, but without jeter, alex, pettitte , posada, bernie, masui , damon, etc, fans will not come as much.

it’s show business in addition to sport and a savvy gm can take that show business money and put it back onto the athletic field. cashman did that when he spent 400 million over the past winter on big stars like sabathia, teixeira , and burnett.

fans do not just root for the uniform. they root for stars too.
star players are not disposable the way red sox management thinks. disposing them too early hurts the business model and the resulting team thats on the field.

the yankees probably have to spend at least 180 million when you factor in the importance of the show business factor.

blending in the tack wilsons with the cesar cedenos is an art.

there is no set way to do it.

    cashman did it this year.

again , a tip of the hat to him.

As someone who doesn’t live in NY and doesn’t get “YES” could someone tell me if the parade tomorrow is going to be available on the internet or on some other national channel like “ESPNNEWS” or “ESPN?”

If you find out anything let me know, I’m in the same boat. I’m assuming MLB Network will carry it. I’m going to check as soon as I get home.

What I would take Pete Abe to task for is that he’s being disingenuous to write in a Boston Paper about a team who “buys” a championship with free agents.

As an aside, this Championship will always be bitter sweet. Watched the game last night with my lovely wife and along with us was my dog, Murphy. Murphy as some of you know is my loyal companion and fellow Yankee fanatic of 13 years. Last week Murph was in the hospital for three days and came home after three separate procedures to relieve congestive heart failure. The fluids pressing on her heart were successfully drained and she experienced some relief and we took her home with us. Unfortunately, the relief is only temporary becasue she was diagnosed with advanced lymphoma.

After much soul searching and consulting with Murphy’s longtime vet, we’ve concluded that it’s best we put her down in the most humane fashion to prevent any more suffering.

Thanks to everyone on the blog for all the prayers and well wishes. And thank you Yankees for sending Murphy off with one more title.

    and christina-

the price of all the yankee players on #27 went up.

there is a premium you pay when a player has won a ring.

they are all part of the goodwill of the team.

we as will pay more to see them now.

the red sox lose money when they let a damon or a pedro or a nomar go in the long run because these guys are guys the fan will pay to see.

i know the red sox sell out at fenway, but if they kept these stars longer they could have built a new fenway and afforded a 200 million payroll like the yankees.

    honor the stars.

    it’s good business.

    CB,

I think you’re right about Cashman’s flexibility but that is also part of having the resources to be flexible which he does.

We had a lot of $$ come off the books last offseason and the Yankees reinvested it where necessary and with the right kind of players.

Personally, I don’t believe the Yankees will go out and pursue a John Lackey type of starter via free agency. If anything, I believe you’ll see a similar move to the offseason between 98 and 99 in which we brought in an impact starter via trade in Roger Clemens by maximizing the value of some of our younger guys and one of our veterans. Problem is, the younger guys are now the more coveted species of player because of the pricetag.

I will not be the leased bit surprised if the Yankees dangle guys like Joba, Jackson, Melky, etc. in an effort to bring back a 2nd or 3rd starter. At the same time, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see them hang on to all of those guys, sign a type B free agent starter, let Wang walk, and let Joba and Hughes duke it out in spring training for the 5th starter spot.

Going forward, they have to start planning for life after Pettitte, Posada, and Rivera. I think you’ll see the chains start to move with this.

Everyone, by and large, stayed healthy this season and that was hardly the case in 2008…in fact our health is what buried us in June/July.

Not sure where we’ll go to address needs but I really hope they are careful about what kind of free agents they bring in, if any. If I am the Yankees, I sign one of Matsui or Damon, more likely the latter to keep the DH slot open.

It would be painful to see Matsui go, especially after this postseason, but the fact that he managed to stay healthy (despite the fluid draining) inclines me to believe he’ll have a hard time doing so consistently.

“2. Re-sign Johnny Damon for 2 years. Despite the minor injuries he tends to get, JD is a very durable player. His swing is perfect for Yankee Stadium and he can still play LF full-time.”

this the one point i most strongly disagree with….i know we’re all basking in the afterglow of the championship and Damno had great ab against Lidge the other night but he’s absolutelt terrible in LF and he ain’t going to get any more athletic at age 37 and 38.He slumped terribly in the second half of the season and keep in mind this was “walkyear Johnny” playing for his last contract, i have a feeling it will downhill from here.
He absolutely cannot be our everyday LF’er next year if i have to watch him throw another six hopper into third base i’m gonna lose it.

also i wouldn’t bring Hairston back as i think you can turn that job over to Ramiro Pena and save a couple mil

i think the Yanks should def come away with Aroldis Chapman and being that it seems Hal has his limits with the check book we can get younger, more athletic, cheaper and better with a few shrewd moves that begin with letting the Damons,Matsuis,Molinas,Hairstons etc. move on

    randy l,

Very true, though it seems as if this team had more cesear cedenos than tack wilsons. I am glad they stuck with Gardner this season. I like to see those gritty type of guys succeed at the major league level.

Most big players you pick up that cost a crap load of money are typically going to be the same players that people want to pay the money to see. Wouldn’t you agree?

I recall when Pete got BIG props from Rob Neyer at SI for an observation that was lifted DIRECTLY from SJ44, about a possible major-league move based on minor league action.

I wrote about it at the time on another forum, with links and dates. It was SJ44 at his insider best, and PA’s comment was flat-out nicked from him, with zero attribution or “hat tip”.

Pete can be an excellent reporter and a good writer, and laugh-out-loud funny, but he’s never been shy about nicking ideas from other sources.

Okay, fine (the way you write it, I can’t help but think of Gal 2:11, which is slightly amusing). But a LOT of people who went head to head with Pete got banned AND their posts were deleted (and not just trolls).

All in all, I have very mixed feelings about ol’ Pete. He did a great job in many respects – gave me a lot of pleasure as a reader, and really, what more can you ask for from a writer? – but he has a weird dark side.

I will miss the throw-downs between GB7 & PA… that was some great stuff… like two hardcore badhats shooting it out in a Western. (GB’s Walter Brennan circa My Darling Clementine vs. PA’s Lee Marvin circa Liberty Valance? Or vice-versa?)
