We have a winner!

Sam Borden
November
5

Well, that didn’t take long (though no one thought it would) and we’ve got our winner of a pair of VIP tickets to tomorrow’s parade. I’ll allow the winner to share his identity in the comments if he or she wants to do so (or not, if they don’t). Otherwise, let me just say thank you to everyone who jumped on and entered – according to new boss Sean Mayer in the office, the response was “crazy.” I expected nothing less from you guys.

Also, since I’ve had a few emails from people not from New York, I thought I’d post this link which explains what, exactly, the “Canyon of Heroes” is and where the name came from. You can also check out this page which lists all the ticker-tape parades in New York, starting with the first – an imprompteau gathering to recognize the Statue of Liberty going up. Not bad company for the Yankees, I’d say.

(Looking at that list, which one would have wanted to be at? If the Albert Einstein one seems intriguing to me, does that make me a nerd? Seeing JFK come through the streets would have been pretty spectacular too, I bet …)

UPDATE, 5:45 p.m.: For those coming into the city via train tomorrow, it seems that New Haven Line trains will add cars to existing scheduled trains, while the Harlem Line will add a special train leaving Southeast at 8:30 a.m. and the Hudson Line will add a train leaving Poughkeepsie at 8:41 a.m. Check out the MTA website for more.

    Congrats to whoever won :)

was the winner already contacted? I guess it wasn’t me. :-( i didn’t see it for 20 min, and judging by the post, you had a lot of responses. :-(

  3. saucY

i guess i can stop watching my email and phone? :/

    congrats to the winner

  4. jennifer

saucy i’m still waiting for the city to call me to tell me I won. I won’t hold my breath though. I don’t know what to do tomorrow. my boss said I could go, but it is going to be so crowded.

See, even the prizes here are better without Pete.

Instead of getting VIP parade tickets, maybe you’d get a ballpark giveaway Met Life windbreaker he found in his trunk underneath a pile of Big Mac wrappers.

Sammy Sosa got his own ticker-tape parade?

  13. Boston Dave - XXVII

    nice Bob!

  14. jayhi

Great way for damon and godzilla to exit. Next year bay in left, ajax in center and milton bradley in right. Posada and A-Rod will dh more.

  15. Bob(the original)

Here’s a thought that just entered my mind. Did the Yanks vote Selena Roberts a playoff share? lol

  16. Tom

Philly phan here. You guys won fair and square but keep in mind your payroll was over $70 million dollars more than ours. I suspect if the game was played with a cap, we’d be having a different discussion today. Have fun with the championship you bought. Id rather win one through trades and the farm thank you very much. Hope to see you again next year.

    Tom’s tears sustain me.

    Tom,

Pretty sure if you win one you will careless how the team was put together…

    What was the Phillies?

Go buy some cheese(steak) with that whine.

  24. Bob(the original)

Hey Tom, would $70 mil more have kept Howard from thinking the object of the game was to hit air?

Or have kept Brad Lidge from soiling the bed?

Or make Jimmy Rollins half as good as his overrrated reputation?

  25. Tom in N.J.

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

I finally just got 2 hours of sleep!!!!! I just woke up and had this dread that there was still work to be done!!!!!!

After gathering together my senses, I guess recording the parade is the only work left to be done, oh, and Letterman!!!!

  28. Giuseppe Franco

Does it really matter what the haters think today?

The Yanks didn’t break any rules. They won because they were the best team.

Who cares what Yankee haters think. Yanks will always be the most hated team in baseball regardless of their payroll. It’s been that way for 90 years.

Wear it as a badge of honor.

  29. CK in LA

Tom …. didn’t know Cliff Lee came through the Phillies farm?

  30. muffin stump

okay, it’s jump on the troll fun.

hope a regular poster won the vip ticket (and tells us who s/he is)!

    tom (philly fan)-

your argument can be used against the phillies.

the marlins finished only 6 games behind the phillies.

    their payroll was 35 million.

the phillies had a payroll more than three times as much.

no way the phillies beat the marlins if they drop down to 35 million.

so you see , your logic is a little off.

the yankees beat the phillies fair and square just like the phillies beat the marlins fair and square.

they all played by the rules.

    the best team won.

  33. Ryan

Am I the only one crazy enough to think i need to get downtown at 6am tomorrow to get a good spot?

  34. stuart a

yanks have tons of home grown talent on the team unless; jeter, jorge, pettite, mo, chamberlain, hughes, cano, cabrera, robertson, aceves, and others do not count….

i am sure tom does not want to thrwo away the stats of ; ibanez, lee, pedro, werth and all your free agents…………

Hope you’re doing well and enjoying this.

Kind of ironic that the Yankees are hated by America, when the world views Americans as Americans view the Yankees, and Americans are known as Yankees to the rest of the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  36. Nick in SF in Vallejo

The joke’s on me, Tom. I drove back to Vallejo to pay homage to our game seven starter but we already won!

  37. Abdababdaserser

This post season has had an underlying food theme for me.

Yankees snacked on Twinkies, munched on Angel food cake, and feasted on Phillies Cheesesteak. Mighty tasty!

Tom, if there was a salary cap, then the Steinbrenners would simply pocket the profits. Isn’t better for the players to get the dough then the owners?

We’re lucky our owners aren’t greedy – they plow the profits back into the team, instead of their p0ckets.

  39. Denise

so who thinks Pettitte will stay or will he retire?

  40. CR9

Peter Gammons looked like a stiff. After saying Mo has been baseball’s MVP for the last 15 years, he had to throw in the mention of 2001 to him.

Sorry, Peter. If you’re looking for season tickets, I hear that Yankee Stadium has some plans available. Oops, you’ve already got your season tickets to the Sawx

If the Yankees were successful in buying championships, then we’d win it every year. Don’t be a hater b/c our organization knows how to market this franchise, and the ownership puts alot back into the team to WIN, period, to WIN the World Series

So, do you think that Philadelphia should give back the 2008 trophy because they had Free Agents or release Ibanez and Werth? How about sending Cliff Lee and Moyer back to their last teams because Philadelphia picked over the corpses of Seattle and Cleveland to get those two for nickels on the dollar?

    CR9,

    I’m progressing. Thanks for asking.

I might be going home within the next 10 days. I’ve been in the hospital for a month now so I’m hopeful.

And yes, I’m absolutely enjoying this. Can’t wait to see the parade when I get home (I gave my nephew specific instructions today to set my TiVo and record it).

This morning, Buster Olney was whining about the disparity in baseball. And he was talking of how young players would be let go or traded and it was a shame.

His main example was Jeremy Hermida.

I wonder if Buster will be upset, now that Hermida was traded to the Red Sox due to previously mentioned Disparity.

  53. randy l.

” I suspect if the game was played with a cap, we’d be having a different discussion today.”

why do people like tom always think that a cap is going to be set at what their favorite team spends ?

red sox fans fall into the same thinking.

if there was a salary cap , it would probably be around 80 million which is probably an average team’s salary right now.

tom’s phillies would not be able to afford both howard and utley.

i personally like to see uber teams playing each other for the worlds series.

it’s better baseball seeing two loaded teams with lots of all stars going head to head than seeing two mediocre teams where the talent is spread over 30 teams

  54. yankees fan in chicago

the reason the yankees won: HOPE WEEK. If God wasn’t already a yankees fan after that week he definitely was. Anybody agree?

  55. Betsy

GF, so you will get to see the parade? Fantastic!

  56. CR9

    Agreed!!! Hope Week!!!!!!!!!!!!! Help Children!!!!!!!!!!

The best part about this postseason,

little but key production out of Tex, little prod. out of Cano, Swish and we still win.

Tex can break out next year!!!!!

    It’s all lining up!

Does anyone know the name of the song that was playing during the final montage after the World Series win?

  58. m

Tom is right. We won fair and square! With a little help from Manuel’s misguided faith in Pedro.

  59. Tom

Hey Im not saying the Yankees arent playing within the rules but be fair- your team monopolized the free agent market in December, and spent their way to the title. The day I see the Yankees win it all with a payroll on an even field as the other teams I will respect them. Until that day comes, and I doubt it ever will, it diminshes what they accomplish. They earned it, but its not as special. Put your money where your mouth is. If your’e that good, cut your payroll by 30-40 million dollars and compete. Only then would I be amazed with what the Yankees accomplish. Ive said all I am going to say, We will probably see you next year and do this again.

  60. Giuseppe Franco

    Betsy,

Yeah, it looks that way. I just hope he doesn’t foul up my instructions. LOL.

  62. m

Hey, Tom. Tell your wunderkind GM to stop picking up pitchers off the scrap heap. It doesn’t work. And tell Manuel that just because Pedro could handle the Dodgers doesn’t mean it would work against the Yankees or anyone from the American League.

  63. m

Okay, now I feel kind of bad debating with Tom. He sounds genuinely sad about the whole payroll issue.

  64. WestCoastFan

Does anyone know the site that tracks the percentage of 40 man roster players that are home grown? I believe the Yankees are 2nd. I’d like to know who is first.

  65. Doreen

    Random thought:

The free agents signed right after the 3 consecutive WS wins, those guys came here and said, basically, “I came to the Yankees to win a ring.” In other words, riding the coattails and assuming it was easy.

Because there have been no WS in the past several years, the free agent signings this past season were different. They recognized that though the mission of the Yankees is to always work toward winning the WS, it is not a given, and they came to actually help work toward that. NO coattails. NO easy ring to complete their careers.

It goes toward a different mind set.

That, plus, they had strong, positive personalities.

And for what it’s worth, the Joe Torre era was effectively gone. It was a new day.

Joe Torre was a great manager, but after a time, a malaise sets in, a set way. I believe last season was transitional for Joe Girardi. It takes time to change a culture.

  66. CK in LA

The Phillies payroll will have to get quite a bit larger or they will lose their core. If these guys keep winning, they will demand more money ….

  67. Giuseppe Franco

The Yanks have always had the edge in cold hard cash or signing young talent before other teams could.

The reason why there’s an amateur draft is because of Yankee scouts showing up at kids’ high school graduations with a contract in hand (ie: Mantle).

The rest of baseball is just going to have o deal with it and quit whining.

Hope Week is not why the Yankees won. But it added to the very special atmosphere around this team, and I hope they continue to do that in the future.

  71. m

    Doreen,

Remember that crazy winter when Mo, Pettitte, Alex, and Jorge were all free agents. Well, technically Alex wasn’t a free agent.

People flipped out because too many years, too much money? I can’t believe that Jeter, Mo, Jorge, and Jeter have been cornerstones of two different championships 9 years apart. I don’t think people realize how improbable that is. Not only did they get older, but Jeter and Mo got better!

  72. m

Oops. Forgot to point out that we scooped up all those “free agents” and paid dearly for it. But they wouldn’t be celebrating if they had all went to different corners of the league.

  73. Wave Your Hat

“The Phillies payroll will have to get quite a bit larger or they will lose their core. If these guys keep winning, they will demand more money ….”

Not in 2010, though. Most of their team and their core are already under contract or not yet arbitration eligible:

Damn! Theo stole one of my ideas….i suggested it this afternoon in one of the earlier posts as a good possible replacement for an old Damon…

i will give Theo credit he stays working and knows he’s gotta get something done quickly because we’re about to run away and hide from the RED SUX!!!

  75. Abdababdaserser

Since when is life set up where all things are equal? Even in the Soviet Union things weren’t equal and that is what they built their whole propaganda of their ideology on.

Put salary cap in and it means putting in a salary floor. It means a number of owners will sell out because they can’t pocket as much.

It is also not desired by the owners of the teams because it means they will have to open their books and have to spend 50% or more of the mean average of profits on the players. No owner wants their books open to scrutiny.

Tom, what it comes down to is class envy. You envy a team that invests in itself. In the 50’s the Yankees actually had lower payroll and signed players with the lure of them earning their extra money through championships.

People move to NYC to earn more money. That also means more costs.

Know what I would respect? A team like the Phillies spending the same percentage of their profits as the Yankees do. I guarantee you that the owners of the Phillies wouldn’t do it.

So get off your high horse. Successful businesses always invest in their company to remain successful. Other businesses that look only to keep profits coming in at a certain level will be content to remain lower tier.

  76. sadf

I can’t go, but I wanted to enter, so that if I won, I could give it to the 28th person, in honor of next year’s Yankees team.

You never know when the next one will be – and if you’ll be here to enjoy it.

I wish I could go, but work commitments prevent it….

  79. Wave Your Hat

Last winter the number of posters on LoHud who didn’t want the Yanks to sign Andy, or who had negative things to say about Andy, really surprised me.

At the time I couldn’t understand it, but in retrospect I think it reflected the number of younger Yankee fans on the blog which either were too young to appreciate Andy during the dynasty years, or who maybe weren’t paying that close attention to the Yanks back then.

One thing that as a Pettitte fan I really enjoyed about the season and the post-season is that it gave those fans an opportunity to understand how great a Yankee Andy was and is.

Doesn’t make him right, though. Or less parochial in his opinions. What he’s saying about the Yankees, could easily have been applied to the Phillies last year vs the Rays.

    m -

I really think that more than being able to sign free agents from other teams, a lot of people are upset by the fact that the Yankees were able to keep that Core 4. That they anted up the money to keep their home grown players who developed into stars.

It is incredible in this day and age of baseball that the Yankees both recognized the “specialness” of those players and made sure they retained their services. It won’t happen in any other organization.

The Bernie Williams situation was quite an upsetting one, because the Yankees don’t “throw away” their core players. It was a tough situation, and one I think they mangled. Bernie could have been held onto for one more year; but then, no other team signed, so what to make of that? I like that the Yankees try to balance sentimentality with practicality. It is one of the most endearing qualities of the Yankees that they really, really try to keep their guys “in the fold.” It’s a fraternity. A true fraternity. It sets the Yankees as an organization apart.

If they let Damon and/or Matsui go, I know it won’t be an easy decision, but a gut-wrenching one. I don’t think that decision’s been made. I firmly believe one will not be made until they have looked at all the options out there. The only way Matsui and Damon are let go is if there is a better alternative. I think there is none, but I don’t have the information the Yankees do.

  83. m

    WYH,

I think there were a lot of people wanted Andy to come back for $6-8M because they thought he stole money the previous 2 seasons. At least that’s the gist I got from their arguments. Some couldn’t forget the HGH revelation. Others were upset about Moose.

Needless to say there are a lot more Pettitte fans this winter than last.

  84. VEE

Pearl Jam Amongst the Waves was not the song. I can not for the life of me remember what it was but it is killing me. it was a slow song and it was playing while they recapped all six games showing the highlights of both the Phillies and Yankees. Does anyone have any idea of what i am talking about or am i just losing my mind?

  85. GreenBeret7

One of the more interesting trades was between KC and the white sox. KC traded Mark Teahan to Chicago for 3rd baseman Josh Fields and 2nd baseman Chris Getz. Josh Fields was supposed to replace Joe Crede and be the next BIG DEAL after hitting 23 homers in 400 at bats a couple of years ago. I really liked what I saw from Getz when NYY played in Chicago this year. Good bat and a really good base runner. He was a real pain in the rear.

It will be interesting to see what KC’s plans will be for Callaspo, their 2nd baseman and 3rd baseman Alex Gordon, their high profile star of the system.

  86. m

Pearl Jam was definitely one of the songs.

  87. pat

Sox gave up Hunter Jones for Hermida. Francesa will be soooo upset.

  88. Tom in N.J.

One thing that both CC and Andy have is the ability it pitch effectively without their best stuff. They both can bear down and gut it out. Pettitte was a case-study in pitching guts this post season.

  89. Boston Dave - XXVII

The Red Sox absolutely stole Hermida too.

The Marlins should have waited a couple months and shopped him around. There would surely be teams hoping to unlock his potential.

Hermida has disappointed, and isn’t a difference maker, but he’s a quality bench player at the very least.

    The Marlins gave him away.

  90. vb03

Is Hermida supposed to replace Bay? If so, looks like Boston’s not only raised ticket prices, but are also cut payroll. Looks like a certain Mr. Henry is in need of more dough in his pocket.

  91. Doreen

Someone refresh my memory about Hermida?

  92. m

    Doreen,

People also don’t realize that a lot of the payroll is tied up with their homegrown guys. CC & Alex notwithstanding, haha.

  93. randy l.

“Put your money where your mouth is. If your’e that good, cut your payroll by 30-40 million dollars and compete”

    tom ( phillies fan)=

the marlins spent about 450 thousand per win.

the phillies spent about 1.2 million per win.

the yankees spent about 2 million per win.

you’re not getting it that the phillies spent way more than the marlins .

why don’t you and the phillies put you money where your mouth is and drop down to their level?

the contest is not to spend the least per win.

if it were the marlins would be the world champions.

i get it that you are disappointed , but your saying that the yankees are doing something that the phillies aren’t. you are saying the yankees spend more money.

    well so do the phillies.

    your argument is again faulty.

  94. Boston Dave - XXVII

No way Hermida is going to replace Bay.

It may open the door for a JD Drew trade though.

Hank: I guess I’m not an idiot, right?

    Best quote of the night.

  97. m

I don’t think that Cashman’s getting outsmarted, the Yankee premium is just way higher. And he’s shown he doesn’t want to part with the prospects. Of course Hunter Jones is crap, but the Marlins would never give us a deal like that. Maybe it’s a kickback for the Hanley Ramirez deal. :)

  98. vb03

“Put your money where your mouth is. If your’e that good, cut your payroll by 30-40 million dollars and compete”

Why? Where in the rules does it say that the Yankees should drop to the spending level of other teams to “validate” anything? If you want to complain, knock on Bud Selig’s office.

You know the haters are losing traction when they regurgitate the payroll argument over and over like a broken record.

  99. Doreen

    m -

That’s exactly true. All the money just gets intermingled. We as Yankees fans don’t consider the new contracts to Jorge, Mo, et al., as free agent signings.

  100. Boston Dave - XXVII

    Doreen,

he was a former 1st rd draft pick who was supposed to be great.

he’s shown glimpses of it but has never reached his potential.

He’s a pretty good defensive OF also.

he is a quality bench player for the Sox. I can’t see him breaking teh starting lineup unless there are mid-season injuries.

    ————————————————————

You’d better hope that Gammons and Francessa don’t see that Boston stole Hermida. They feel that Hunter is a HOFer-in-waiting.

Hunter Jones is the lesser piece of the trade IMO. He’s the mop up guy in the bullpen for Florida, at best. He has almost zero value.

The Sox gave up a low level reliever, Jose Alvarez, who at least has some promise (1.52 ERA in 12 appearances).

the red sox also traded Jose Alvarez in that deal who is the more promising pitcher of the two…Hunter Jones is a lefty bullpen guy, Alvarez is a good looking lefty starter who may be a year away in Florida…he’ll start at AA for them next season….the Sux want Bay back and if he resigns they could always DH Drew more in an effort to keep him on the field more…

I liked Hermidia for us as i still think that he could mature into a Paul O’Neill type bat…oh well

I still like the potential of Rick Ankiel who is a free agent…but please let’s get younger and let Elvis go!

Hermida will be a free agent after 2011.

Top Ten Reasons Yankees are WS Winners:
    1. Steinbrenner Family
    2. Cashman and his cast of scouts, etc
    3. Girardi, his preparation, and the successful bonding of his players over a game of pool, and the handling of the pitching staff.
    4. Return of the new and improved, relaxed A-Rod.
    5. Played in the toughest division in baseball, which prepared them for scratching out wins.
    6. Had a true Ace, the best reliever, and gold glove caliber defense in the infield, plus two of the top three candidates for MVP.
    7. Stayed healthy for the most part after the Nady and A-Rod injuries.
    8. Beat the second best team in baseball in the Angels to advance to the WS.Beat the best NL team which was improved over last year
    9. Bested the leading saves leader in AL in Fuentes, the 2nd or 3rd best closer in Nathan, and last years best NL closer in Lidge.

    Boston Dave,

LOL. If my streak holds up, there will be great joy in Foxborough this winter!

As for the Red Sox, it’s interesting. There’s still that intensity between the Yankees & Sox, but both teams seem to mix it up with other teams more. The Yankees in part because we weren’t going to get pushed around anymore. The Sox because they players lack class on the field at times (Buckett).

I got the feeling that he really didn’t think the original number choice through to the natural conclusion (having to change the number upon reaching the championship number). He didn’t sound arrogant when he said it. And he was asked, he didn’t volunteer that he would now be changing his number. He said, more or less, yeah, I guess I should do that. “I mean, teams are still dealing with the recession. Even Bobby Abreu, who had a GREAT year, decided not to test the market and accept $9 mill, which is still about half of what he made in 2007.”

I didn’t say that they would be signed for a King’s ransom. I just said they’d get signed. Both performed well in the series. That will draw interest.

  183. GreenBeret7

I think that the Yanks resign both Damon for two years at around 7 mil per with incentives and Matsui for one year and a team option for one more at about 6-7 mil per with incentives. Pettitte will follow family wishes and if he resigns, it’ll be around 12 mil and an option with incentives.

  188. m

I’m so torn. I thought if they won, they could go younger and more athletic.

But Matsui and Damon were both big on the biggest stage, the World Series.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see both of them signed. They love veteran players.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see either/nor signed either. But we need offense from somebody. Anybody. :)

  189. Abdababdaserser

I absolutely think that teams will want Damon and Matsui. The question remains if Matsui particularly would want to play for another team or go back home. His knees gave him a lot of problems this year, so playing in the field isn’t going to be a likely option for him.

Both have expressed their desire to remain with the team. That could help both sides to come to terms that work.

I think the Yankees are going to be looking to get another starter. While they have Joba and Hughes to possibly start next year, they are question marks. Joba will get his chance to remain a starter, but if he struggles again he will be moved to the pen. Hughes worked as a reliever, but can he be effective as a starter for the full season?

Even if Pettitte comes back they will probably want another arm. Lackey? Eh. I wonder if they would be able to make a deal with the Blue Jays for Halliday. Halliday may also help Burnett and the young arms.

    Just imagine…
    CC, Halliday, Burnett, Joba/Hughes, Pettitte.

I don’t see the Yankees looking at Beckett, personally. He is good, but has fallen off the last two years. If that keeps up he wouldn’t be worth signing.

Speaking of Ellie Howard, am I alone in seeing a similarity in Ellie Howard and Hideki Matsui, both in ability and citizenship? They were/are two of the most talented/gentlemanly players the Yanks have had since the days of Gehrig, Mattingly, Murcer, Jeter and Hunter notwithstanding.

Lincecum isn’t in big trouble with the police from this. Its a minor charge and was tied to him speeding. He got stopped for speeding and the policeman smelled the weed.

The bigger problem he will face is with the team. Not sure MLB’s stance on it either, but I don’t think it will be a major deal.

  193. stuart a

the yanks need to get younger.. bye bye to molina replaced by cervelli. for sure either damon or matsui must go.. they need 1 of bat and maybe 1 starter that is it. pen is loaded with young arms. infield is set… melancon will get a chance i nthe pen with robertson getting a larger role.

they need to figure out joba and hughes, starters or pen and settle on it once and for all….

they can manage 1 more yr. with melky and gardner if they get 1 significant bat in the OF. Swsiher i think has 2 more yrs on his deal he is 28 and not bad, think the will learn from the postseason experience… cano is a huge puzzle they are counting on him becoming a big rbi guy and he has not done it yet. he has been in the big leagues for 4 yrs i think and he still cannot hit with RISP and dies not have good AB’s in big spots……

Damon at a bit less than Abreu. Career stats are slightly worse, and slightly worse fielder. $8 million or so per year x 2 looks like the market. Sorry, Boras. Just do the darn deal before the Yankees get too interested in kicking Holliday’s tires. Without the Yankees in play, Damon goes down to $6 million given his declining defensive skills, and lack of market–he is not what the Sox are looking for.

Matsui is interesting. 30/100 guys who are pure DH? What is the comparison, especially given the knee issues at age 36?

He is improving. His OBP was ove 350 this year, he hit 25 HR’s, had a 320 BA, and played a fine second base. My only criticism is is lack of sucess with RISP.

Can’t knock him for a bad playoffs-sample size too small.

There is nothing to figure out with Phil and Joba – the only reason Phil was in the pen this year is because he was throwing well and the Yankees didn’t want to send him back down (once Wang was ready). They could use another pitcher, but I’m not interested in giving up any top prospects for Halladay. I don’t know much about Lackey as a teammate – but I don’t want to pour another 5 years and big $$$ into another SP. I like the pen if Robertson continues to develop and Marte stays healthy. Coke? I’m not a big fan anymore.

Jorge Posada in thirteen post season years. What’s your point.

Name 5 other 2nd baseman in baseball that had 85 RBI this year or 97 RBI two years ago, with a BA of over .300. You can’t.

  206. stuart a

going forward cano is key in making up for some lack of production if they lose damon or matsui or both and do not get a big bat to replace.

my main complaint with cano is his BA with RISP. it appears to not be because of small sample size but a real long term issue.. the guy makes contact more then most hitters why can’t he be a little more selective and be more productive. in this lineup he should get 100 rbi’s……

My opinion is that the Yankees ask Pettitte for one more year, and work out something incentive laden with Wang which would get him an arb salary if he meets certain goals.

The market for SPs after 2010 is great, with Halliday, Beckett, Lee, King Felix (among others) coming up.

Lackey, while good, is not what they need right now. If Wang pulls it off, they have something–why not give it a year?

My guess is the rotation come March is CC, AJ, Pettitte, Joba, Hughes. BP is Mo, Marte, Coke, Robertson, Aceves, Gaudin, Bruney with a sprinkling of minor leaguers (Melacon) thrown in as they develop.

By August, Wang’s recovery (or lack thereof) should be apparent. Recovery = Hughes to pen due to inning limits. Lack of recovery = Hughes to pen, with Gaudin taking his starts after August due to innings limits.

In 2010 offseason, go for Lee or Halliday for a 4 year deal, similar to what AJ got. This will replace Pettitte.

Of course, if one of the young guys in the minors becomes a stud, you’ve saved yourself $17 million per year.

Also, if the Yankees win a few more in the next few years, there may be agitation for a salary cap, then all bets are off.

I thought this was a great response to all the Yankee haters and their thought process on this whole salary cap, the Yankees hurt baseball etc etc etc which to me is just plain foolish.

“Bottom line losers is this..there are teams in MLB that make more money in this business then the Yankees, I did not say Revenue I said MONEY! There are richer owners then the Stein’s the difference is investment in your product. The Pohlad family are among the richest wealthiest families in this country so do not tell me they do not have the money to put it back into the players, they choose not to!

What if they did? They would be able to keep their own players, sign free agents and make that team a viable contender every year and win a world series or two… what happens then? The value of the team appreciates and each year and thus maybe one year can have their own network and get a new ballpark, DOH already happening gee wiz, and generate even more money. In other words EXPAND THEIR BRAND!!!!

George S bought the Yankees from CBS in the 70’s for 10 million, they are worth more then 1 billion now, great investment wouldnt you say? How did it get to this you ask? Easy by investing in their team and trying to put the best possible team year in and year out, why, because they are smart business men.

Everyone knows the way to make a profit in owening a sports franchise is by its value appreciating year in and year out, how does that happen? By winning!

    Suck on that LOSERS!”

  218. Giuseppe Franco

I would imagine Joba has at least one more full year in the rotation to see if he can rebound.

They didn’t go through all that trouble to get his innings in check (so he can pitch 200 innings next season) just to abort their long term plan if he struggles the first few months of next year.

It’s a long term plan with Joba. They aren’t going to flush that plan down the toilet so soon.

Besides, Joba still struggled in the pen this postseason. His struggles go far beyond his role.

PYF, they all four were being paid roughly the same amount. They all have the same abilities and limitations. One right handed and three left handed batters. I guess their signings and by whom will depend on what side they need the players to hit from. Two other players that are fast fitting into the DH type player within the next year are Jermaine Dye and Magglio Ordonez.

Joba has the skills. Four plus pitches = MLB starter.

It is all about his head and desire to stay in shape and improve.

That was always the rap with him, and why the Yankees were able to draft him at a lower position.

With Joba, if his makeup indicates relief (ie, its easier for his ability to train), that’s where he will be.

I agree that they will give him one more full season without an innings limit to see what they have.

The timing is perfect when a lot of starters will be FA at the end of 2010, and the Wang experiment will end one way or the other.
