Cashman has always preached "roster flexibility" and locking up Damon or Matsui for more than 1 year is too much. As painful as it would be to lose Matsui's #'s you have to consider the core of your team is aging and will need more time at the DH spot this year than last. Matsui's knees from all accounts are not getting any better. Give him 1 year at most and ride out what he can give you. As Chanp809 stated correctly, you let a player walk 1 year early as opposed to 1 year too later.
