Smile and wave. He wasn’t showing much reaction. I couldn’t tell if he looked overwhelmed or not. I was also a little disappointed he rode the float with Molina…. just seemed so obvious
Sam, thanks! I hope we get some good quotes – I really want to hear how the new guys felt about the parade; it must have been a blast for them.
So how did “Empire State of Mind” sound with no Alicia? That’s the best part of the song IMO.
Erica, I wonder who chose the players and the floats. It was an odd choice, AJ and Molina. Hmm, maybe he was overwhelmed – I thought he’d be one of the guys who was thoroughly enjoying himself.

Hey all…

Unfortunately, I did not make it because I have a fever of 101.4 so it was probably not a good idea to head down there but at least I maanged to see all the footage on tv.
The 2010 season can not come soon enough now!
Well folks that’s the end of the season and celebration. Now let the depression sink in. We are at the beginning of 4 months with no baseball.

A bunch of Yankee players going to The Garden tonight to watch the Knicks/Cavs game.

Neat parade. Take that Yankee Haters!
Next year, when trolls repopulate the blog, we should send them a link to the parade video.
One thing that stands out for me in this celebration is Wednesday night, after they clinched, Kim Jones was interviewing Damon.
During the interview, Joba comes up behind Damon, says, “I love you,” kisses him on the cheek, and pours a Bud on his head while he’s trying to speak.
I could not stop laughing. Did anyone else see that?

Remember one thing now that it’s 2009 and the Yankees are back on top.
The Red Sox are irrelevant, back where they belong, chasing the Yankees. They’ve got some real issues up there, as well as the Curse of Pete Abe.
The onus is back on them. Who cares when we play them?
The funniest part of the Damon interview was when Joba did all of that Damon didn’t react at all. Didn’t look at him, didn’t crack a smile, nothing. It was so funny

He’ll be performing his NYC song at CitiField the next time the Mets make it…

Stultus,
Sneakers + white socks isn’t weird if you are going to a ballgame or going for a run or something like that.
what color sock are you supposed to wear with sneakers?
What color socks do you wear in Europe?
Mick – i’m not picking sides and i’m not saying its right or wrong…but…there are probably more yankee fans at this point in time that know and listen to Jay Z more than sinatra…and in the Hip Hop/Rap world (the world that Jay Z is talking about when he raps) Jay Z probably has made that Yankee hat more famous – he’s been wearing the yankee hat (which is the most popular hat in hip hop/rap videos and everyday life)for his entire career….

Understood. Those that follow him are all that matter to him, as they buy his stuff, and never heard of Sinatra. And the slap at people who did, he could care less about. He’s just another salesman.

What’s worse wearing white socks with sneakers or paying attention to what kind of socks someone is wearing with their sneakers
What a good time. Did anyone feel like guys were hidden on the backs of some floats? You could tell who was up front on each but each float had so many people on them that on some you couldn’t tell who was on the back. Like with Jeter’s float, just as it went by everyone noticed Jorge was on there too and by then it was passed. I didn’t realize Damon was on his float either until it had just passed. Regarding the backs of the floats, they should have done something to distinguish players from non-players, or at least indicate who was on each. Just something they can work on for next year. It was a fun day.
“When exercising, it’s not weird. But Americans wear sneakers and white socks all the time.
I just find it odd, especially the white sport socks.

Yes there are many times when I see Americans wearing sneakers with white socks and it looks very out of place. I’m just saying there are times when it doesn’t look out of place, such as the gym or at a ballgame.
@ Sab
The real issue is that he was a Mets fan.
Thanks.
Regardless, Murti is a classy guy.
Whether or not Jay-Z is actually the new Sinatra, I think it’s unquestionable that Snoop Dogg is the new Dean Martin.
Mos Def is the new Jerry Lewis.

Heading back from the parade. Tough to see at times but saw most of the guys on the floats. Missed a couple if they were on the other side. But what a great time!
Empire State of Mind is a rap (hip-hop) take off on New York, New York. In its genre, I think it’s good. It’s also got a great “hook” in the Alicia Keys part.
Isn’t braggadocio what hip-hop is all about?
I don’t believe it’s to be taken all that seriously.
And not for nothing, but in his time, Sinatra was as braggadocio as Jay-Z is in his.
Doreen
Have you taken a look at the lyrics to the song?
Isn’t it also normal to wear a yankee jacket or shirt to school..??

Come on now!
And yes, the shoes are crazy. Just take a look:
http://www.elegantsoles.com/shop/images/G001.jpg
any socks are better than no socks
unless you’re wearing sandals of course
That’s for a “man”!
Sinatra didn’t blow his own horn in any song stating he was the new so and so.
I wasn’t a big fan but his songs were never about himself.
Eric…keep the countdown going, but change it to “until start of spring training” so it’s not so depressing!
BTW, Lohud bloggers, thanks for the blow by blow on the parade…I couldn’t see it (live or on internet/tv) but I feel like I did.
Well, mick -
It’s still a take-off on New York, New York.
A lot grittier, not prettier.
And unless you read ‘em who cares what the lyrics are. A few stand out when he raps, but it’s the “hook” that people mostly remember.
A 18year old with a football shirt to school..no way!
Eric=Erica ! Sorry!
“Have you taken a look at the lyrics to the song?”
Jay-Z brags about himself in every song. Empire State of Mind is relatively humble compared with, say, any song from The Black Album.
mick -
What about “My Way”????
I’M ON A FLOAT!
Sinatra didn’t write his own songs, for one.
But he butchered enough of them in his later years, putting his own “hip” words into the lyrics.
It was a different era. Sinatra’s braggadocio was fashioned differently, but it was definitely there.
And unless you read ‘em who cares what the lyrics are.
—————————————–
doreen,
you are exactly right. lyrics used to be a big part of a song.
i guess that’s not the case anymore. it’s too bad.
Did someone really say that anyone that listens to Jay doesn’t listen to Sinatra? Bit of a generalization dont you think?
Also with regards to his lyrics, the only reason he mentions Sinatra is because of Sinatra’s line “if i can make it there, i’ll make it anywhere”

Okay, I will tweak the countdown until pitchers and catchers report
Note to self: Look up when pitchers and catchers report
Johnny Damon was on a float with Swisher!
OK–parade over. Hot Stove begins.
“Think like a GM” says Bobcat.
Look at what’s out there, and look at the Yankee FAs.
Pettitte. I think he comes back for one more year. Watch his reactions during the Letterman interview.
Damon. He gets Abreu or slightly lower. $9-10 million x 2 with a club option for year 3 (oh I don’t want this, but it’s the price of doing business). Still will give you 140 games at BAA .286 OBP .340 HR 20-25 in YS. Name another player that can give you two years of that.
Matsui. He’s a 30/100 pure DH. Looking at comps, $8-10 millon x 2 is about right. Unfortunately, who can replace his bat at that price in this FA class?
Holliday. Just one person, untested in NY, who will cost $16-17 million x 6. He’s also pure RH. He’s the alternative, but he’s only one person–you can’t bat him twice in the lineup.
Wang. Incentive laden offer to avoid arb and non-tender. Maybe $2-3 million with incentives to $6 million. Will he take it? Money here says yes.
Say no to SP, and wait until the 2010 offseason.
Nady/Molina are likely gone, so you save $9 million. You save about $8-10 million on Damon/Matsui.
Rest of payroll is the same.
Basically the same team with a payroll of $180-185 million, done by Thanksgiving.
See where you are by the ASB, and move young minor talent as needed to wrap up Halliday (or wait until 2010 is over) if Wang doesn’t work out.
Then dominate in 2011 with a spectacular team.
By the way mick, I’m 51 years old, and I love vintage Sinatra.

that’s a good point but that is one great, beautiful song.
i also doubt any of jz’s stuff will stand the test of time as sinatra’s has.
anyway sinatra was a singer, jz is not. alicia keys is the best part of that song.
Did anyone see the priest in front of the church at the corner of Broadway and Wall St. in the Yankee hat with the incense? Good sight to see. I got some pictures.

Glad that some of you got to attend the parade. It must have been so exciting to be there. I watched it on mlb and fox and recorded YES to get me thru the long days w/o baseball. Today reminded me of graduation, you wait for it to happen and then before you know it, its over and everyone moves on.
Congratulations Yankee Universe & savor the moment.. party throughout the weekend non-stop & just enjoy..

Understood. I was never a Sinatra fan but songs like New York, New York, My Way, and others were ballads. All I’m saying.

Sinatra didn’t blow his own horn in any song stating he was the new so and so.
I wasn’t a big fan but his songs were never about himself.
=====================================================
“I Did it my way” can be looked at Ol Blue Eyes tooting his own horn…then again times have changed – you can’t expect Jay Z to sing about flying to the moon and playing amoung the stars because thats not what people want to hear today – that was a different era and really a different world than it is now…
as for him being a Met fan…does it really matter? – from all of the videos i’ve seem from as far back as 2003 and even before he’s been wearing a yankee hat – maybe he was a met fan and smartened up – people are entitled to change their minds –
didn’t we as yankee fans once hate Johnny Damon (and wade boggs and roger clemens) – things change, people change..lets just enjoy the yankees winning and whatever else is just fodder
Every Japanese reporter that walked by in the few hours prior to the parade was greeted with “MVP!” chants.

Me too Doreen and I’m 50. One of my good friends here in south Florida was Sinatras manager and the executor of his will. The story he tells me of “The old Man” are great.
mick -
I agree that Alicia is the best part of the entire song, and it’s the part of the song that stays with me. It’s a somewhat haunting melody. And those particular lyrics are pretty good.
I am pretty much eclectic in my musical tastes, and I would not go out of my way to listen to Jay-Z or any hip-hop/rap for that matter (I don’t even really know what to call it
), but sometimes I hear a song of his or someone else’s that for whatever reason appeals to me. And though the lyrics to this one aren’t as pretty as the songs I usually enjoy, they do have something to say, to the people who do follow his music.
And I can’t rap. I can sing really well. But I can’t do the patter. It’s not classical singing, but there is a style to it, and a technique. I appreciate for what it is. But I won’t purchase it, you know?
And what color socks are you SUPPOSED to wear with sneakers? White sneakers/white sox. Dark sneakers or colored sneakers almost anything goes. But no white sox with black sneakers.
“you are exactly right. lyrics used to be a big part of a song.
i guess that’s not the case anymore. it’s too bad.”
The story Jay-Z tells in that song is actually pretty clever, especially the first and third verses.

the mets and their apparel don’t bother me so much – they are the red headed step child that no one cares about (my apologies to any red headed step child on this blog)- Jay Z is from New York ..if he were to wear a Red Sox hat THAT would bother me more….
Wow! I’ve started a Sinatra thread and it wasn’t my intention.
did i hear wang may be back by may?
i feel like it is worth keeping him and getting him right again. we know what he can do at his best. 19 wins 2 straight years, on his way to a 3rd when he was hurt in 08′. Use this time to strengthen his legs and get our old ace back in that rotation where he belongs.
My contribution was the subtle sock theme…
You’re welcome all.

That’s a great station on Sirius/XM, isn’t it? Years ago, way before satellite radio existed, in the dark, olden days, my husband and I would listen to a radio program called “Saturdays with Sinatra.” It was great.
Upstate Kate, how was the coverage on MLB? Who’d they have? I taped that and YES…….did they show the new guys a lot? I’m really, really interested in their reactions….thanks!
loved on letterman when pettitte was talking about retirement and jeter called him out on saying that every year for the last 8.

Yes the Rat pack ones are the best. Many obviously can’t be shared on here lol. He also managed Sammy Davis and Liza Minelli and still manages Englebert and Rickles. The 2 of them were at game 6 as I texted them some details, Damon injury etc..
His son and my son are best friends and I coached his son for years in baseball. Sinatra is his sons godfather and their 2 dogs are named Frankie and Sammy.
The best and most hilarious part of the season was when Luis Castillo dropped the ball and the Yankees walked off.
My Way is one of my favorite songs of all time. It inspires me to feel good about myself when I’m feeling low…..I did hear it last year sung by Paul Anka, who actually wrote the song, and he was absolutely fantastic.

They just replayed that game a few days ago, but I will never, ever forget Alex’ HR in his first at bat back. That was completely, utterly, totally right out of the movies. In fact, if someone had scripted it, I would have poo-poohed it for being too ridiculous.

These 2 are right up there along with the Cervelli walk off when the team started cahsing him towards right field. The same thing happened with Mirandas but he fell down or he was headed for the outfield. I think that was our last walk off but the base hit ones were headed for a run down to the outfield if they had continued. I was looking for another one in the playoffs.
I also enjoyed the “Damon Dash” from 2nd to 3rd. At first I thought Damon thought the ball went into CF and I said what are you doing, waiting for Feliz to just lob the ball to 3rd for the tag before I realized the shift was on. What a play.
The Canyon of Heroes rules and a season full of great memories comes attached.

The Cervelli walk-off was fun to see. To bad MLB video basically cuts out the fun part.
I hope that becomes a tradition, chasing the hitter into right field…unless the hit is a HR.

One of my favorite moments of the season was the bottom of the 8th inning in Game 4 of the four game sweep of Boston. Coke had just given up a HR to VMart, but Damon and Tex struck with back to back 2 out HRs off Bard to put the Yankees ahead.
That game sealed the division IMO.

It’s cool to not appreciate Jay-z but to sit here and spew criticism to something you don’t know much about is lame
———————————————————-
please educate me about jz. what is the appeal?
the appeal is very simple Jay-Z is one of the most sucessful businessmen/entreprenuers in the entertainment world. He’s also one of the 10-15 most influential people in popular culture today. He was recently recognized by Forbes as one of the wealthiest 40 americans under the age of 40. He accomplished all of this rising from the projects to having a net worth in excess of $600mil all from his own talents and intellect. He is sucessful at everything he does and counts among his friends Warren Buffet,Mayor Bloomberg and Barack Obama and is admired by guys like Jeter,ARod,Lebron etc. He is a NY icon.
as far as lines from his song like “I’m the new Sinatra…”,how many times have you heard someone say Jeter’s the new Dimaggio? it’s a play on the words from New York,New York song “if i can make it here….the double meaning of it is he leads a very Rat Pack like lifestyle as far as his position and influence in NY society as evidenced by his presence in the Yankee parade today and the fact that he is now forever linked with the 2009 WORLD SERIES AND w/ the Yanks and the special season that was 2009.
I’m guessing none of you saw Jay on centerstage on Yes a couple years ago.
Ah, yes baseball news.
I had XM on (Kennedy and whoever he’s on with) and already they’re talking pretty much every free agent is wanted by the Yankees (two specifically mentioned were Lackey & Holliday). And so it begins..

It was terrible, terrible coverage. Those two guys knew little,if anything about the Yanks.
Doreen, I don’t buy it. These guys go on the air and probably do little to no research on what the Yankees want, need or how they go about doing business now. They just assume the Yankee will want everyone at any price….

One time online I found a shirt that says “Can I Pett-itte?” I thought it was hysterical ( but I’d never actually wear it). Last night, my friends and I were making signs and they convinced me ( re: BEGGED) me to make a sign that said that. I was a little iffy about because uhhh well, you know, but anyway I caved and I made it ( I will try to post a pic later but I’m exhausted right now). I got to the parade early so I was in the front. Andy saw a sign with his name on it and was smiling. I think he realized what it said after a few seconds and he looked a little taken aback. He smirked though. It was pretty funny.
Also, he looked gorgeous.
I’m extremely dissapointed that we had to lose 4 games in the postseason. Even though it wasn’t a sweep, I’m glad it turned out all alright.

I usually laugh at that stuff now. I used to get all annoyed, but now that I understand that this is the way the game is played, so to speak (drop the Yankees name as interested party in order to up the ante), I pay no attention. Also, Cash said they’ve had no meetings yet, because they know how things leak out, so you know, roll your eyes and let them talk.
But Lackey did intrigue me…

I was too…very good show, the Larry David CenterStage was very good, as well as many others.
“I just think the “forever linked” thing is a bit too much.”
That’s true. When I think of the 2009 Yankees 20 years from now, Jay-Z being on a parade float will probably be the 345,123rd memory that comes to my mind.
But I do think Empire State of Mind is going to be a staple at Yankee Stadium for years to come.
“Who Let the Dogs Out” will be forever linked to the 2000 World Series losers. It was their song for every at-bat, every hit, every run, every play.
Girardi said today that Steinbrenner told him to remind everyone that pitchers and catchers report in 96 days!
