    He got a key.

    ******

Smile and wave. He wasn’t showing much reaction. I couldn’t tell if he looked overwhelmed or not. I was also a little disappointed he rode the float with Molina…. just seemed so obvious

  9. betsy November 6th, 2009 at 2:34 pm

Sam, thanks! I hope we get some good quotes – I really want to hear how the new guys felt about the parade; it must have been a blast for them.

  10. Erin November 6th, 2009 at 2:35 pm

So how did “Empire State of Mind” sound with no Alicia? That’s the best part of the song IMO.

  11. betsy November 6th, 2009 at 2:36 pm

Erica, I wonder who chose the players and the floats. It was an odd choice, AJ and Molina. Hmm, maybe he was overwhelmed – I thought he’d be one of the guys who was thoroughly enjoying himself.

That is the best part. It sounded pretty good.

I was really hoping for speeches and some Lakers type dancing.

Erica, am glad that you had a good time.

Unfortunately, I did not make it because I have a fever of 101.4 so it was probably not a good idea to head down there but at least I maanged to see all the footage on tv.

Neat parade. Take that Yankee Haters!

Next year, when trolls repopulate the blog, we should send them a link to the parade video.

One thing that stands out for me in this celebration is Wednesday night, after they clinched, Kim Jones was interviewing Damon.

During the interview, Joba comes up behind Damon, says, “I love you,” kisses him on the cheek, and pours a Bud on his head while he’s trying to speak.

Did anyone see/hear that idiot Carton doing commentary for wcbs? First he said he is a Met fan. Then he said Joba’s mother is facing life in prison for selling drugs. And Joba’s father is handicapped. When he saw Minka with Jeter on a float he said there are only 2 reasons to have a woman with you on a float, either you want to date her or marry her. After that I had to change the channel.

  126. Gardner in CF November 6th, 2009 at 4:05 pm

What a good time. Did anyone feel like guys were hidden on the backs of some floats? You could tell who was up front on each but each float had so many people on them that on some you couldn’t tell who was on the back. Like with Jeter’s float, just as it went by everyone noticed Jorge was on there too and by then it was passed. I didn’t realize Damon was on his float either until it had just passed. Regarding the backs of the floats, they should have done something to distinguish players from non-players, or at least indicate who was on each. Just something they can work on for next year. It was a fun day.

Empire State of Mind is a rap (hip-hop) take off on New York, New York. In its genre, I think it’s good. It’s also got a great “hook” in the Alicia Keys part.

Isn’t braggadocio what hip-hop is all about?

I don’t believe it’s to be taken all that seriously.

And not for nothing, but in his time, Sinatra was as braggadocio as Jay-Z is in his.

Sinatra didn’t write his own songs, for one.

But he butchered enough of them in his later years, putting his own “hip” words into the lyrics.

It was a different era. Sinatra’s braggadocio was fashioned differently, but it was definitely there.

  157. PittsburghYankeeFan November 6th, 2009 at 4:25 pm

    OK–parade over. Hot Stove begins.

“Think like a GM” says Bobcat.

Look at what’s out there, and look at the Yankee FAs.

Pettitte. I think he comes back for one more year. Watch his reactions during the Letterman interview.

Damon. He gets Abreu or slightly lower. $9-10 million x 2 with a club option for year 3 (oh I don’t want this, but it’s the price of doing business). Still will give you 140 games at BAA .286 OBP .340 HR 20-25 in YS. Name another player that can give you two years of that.

Matsui. He’s a 30/100 pure DH. Looking at comps, $8-10 millon x 2 is about right. Unfortunately, who can replace his bat at that price in this FA class?

Holliday. Just one person, untested in NY, who will cost $16-17 million x 6. He’s also pure RH. He’s the alternative, but he’s only one person–you can’t bat him twice in the lineup.

Wang. Incentive laden offer to avoid arb and non-tender. Maybe $2-3 million with incentives to $6 million. Will he take it? Money here says yes.

Say no to SP, and wait until the 2010 offseason.

Nady/Molina are likely gone, so you save $9 million. You save about $8-10 million on Damon/Matsui.

Rest of payroll is the same.

Basically the same team with a payroll of $180-185 million, done by Thanksgiving.

See where you are by the ASB, and move young minor talent as needed to wrap up Halliday (or wait until 2010 is over) if Wang doesn’t work out.

Then dominate in 2011 with a spectacular team.

“I Did it my way” can be looked at Ol Blue Eyes tooting his own horn…then again times have changed – you can’t expect Jay Z to sing about flying to the moon and playing amoung the stars because thats not what people want to hear today – that was a different era and really a different world than it is now…

as for him being a Met fan…does it really matter? – from all of the videos i’ve seem from as far back as 2003 and even before he’s been wearing a yankee hat – maybe he was a met fan and smartened up – people are entitled to change their minds –

  174. Doreen November 6th, 2009 at 4:35 pm

    mick -

I agree that Alicia is the best part of the entire song, and it’s the part of the song that stays with me. It’s a somewhat haunting melody. And those particular lyrics are pretty good.

I am pretty much eclectic in my musical tastes, and I would not go out of my way to listen to Jay-Z or any hip-hop/rap for that matter (I don’t even really know what to call it  ), but sometimes I hear a song of his or someone else’s that for whatever reason appeals to me. And though the lyrics to this one aren’t as pretty as the songs I usually enjoy, they do have something to say, to the people who do follow his music.

And I can’t rap. I can sing really well. But I can’t do the patter. It’s not classical singing, but there is a style to it, and a technique. I appreciate for what it is. But I won’t purchase it, you know?

And what color socks are you SUPPOSED to wear with sneakers? White sneakers/white sox. Dark sneakers or colored sneakers almost anything goes. But no white sox with black sneakers.

i guess that’s not the case anymore. it’s too bad.”

The story Jay-Z tells in that song is actually pretty clever, especially the first and third verses.

These 2 are right up there along with the Cervelli walk off when the team started cahsing him towards right field. The same thing happened with Mirandas but he fell down or he was headed for the outfield. I think that was our last walk off but the base hit ones were headed for a run down to the outfield if they had continued. I was looking for another one in the playoffs.

I also enjoyed the “Damon Dash” from 2nd to 3rd. At first I thought Damon thought the ball went into CF and I said what are you doing, waiting for Feliz to just lob the ball to 3rd for the tag before I realized the shift was on. What a play.

It’s cool to not appreciate Jay-z but to sit here and spew criticism to something you don’t know much about is lame
    ———————————————————-
please educate me about jz. what is the appeal?

the appeal is very simple Jay-Z is one of the most sucessful businessmen/entreprenuers in the entertainment world. He’s also one of the 10-15 most influential people in popular culture today. He was recently recognized by Forbes as one of the wealthiest 40 americans under the age of 40. He accomplished all of this rising from the projects to having a net worth in excess of $600mil all from his own talents and intellect. He is sucessful at everything he does and counts among his friends Warren Buffet,Mayor Bloomberg and Barack Obama and is admired by guys like Jeter,ARod,Lebron etc. He is a NY icon.

as far as lines from his song like “I’m the new Sinatra…”,how many times have you heard someone say Jeter’s the new Dimaggio? it’s a play on the words from New York,New York song “if i can make it here….the double meaning of it is he leads a very Rat Pack like lifestyle as far as his position and influence in NY society as evidenced by his presence in the Yankee parade today and the fact that he is now forever linked with the 2009 WORLD SERIES AND w/ the Yanks and the special season that was 2009.

I’m guessing none of you saw Jay on centerstage on Yes a couple years ago.

One time online I found a shirt that says “Can I Pett-itte?” I thought it was hysterical ( but I’d never actually wear it). Last night, my friends and I were making signs and they convinced me ( re: BEGGED) me to make a sign that said that. I was a little iffy about because uhhh well, you know, but anyway I caved and I made it ( I will try to post a pic later but I’m exhausted right now). I got to the parade early so I was in the front. Andy saw a sign with his name on it and was smiling. I think he realized what it said after a few seconds and he looked a little taken aback. He smirked though. It was pretty funny.

    Also, he looked gorgeous.
