Yankees German

This very cool bit of journalism was emailed from Austria (thank you John). According to Google’s translator, the headline says: Precisely where this Trophy belongs to.

I assume that’s the translation of the Derek Jeter quote. Pretty cool to see what the Yankees World Series win looks like so far from home.

Looks pretty much the same, doesn’t it?

CB if you are still around I would be interested what you think of Carl Crawford. If the Yankees do not get Granderson I think the consensus is that they will go after Crawford which I am not thrilled about. I think he will cost too much and a potential OF of Crawford, AJAX, and Swish is serious lacking in power.

I’d rather see them go after Holliday than Crawford if they were to sign a big name outfielder. Crawford is only a year younger and will be close to 30 when he hits free agency as well. Also, Crawford’s game is built more on speed than Holliday’s and realistically that will start to diminish over the course of his next contract.

Um, isn’t that the Esquire article with Alex’s quote about Jeter?

I was very happy to read that Phil won’t have significant innings limits on him. I really, really hope that the Yankees will have patience with him. They should have thrown him in winter ball to work on his change…..but, since they didn’t, he’s going to have to find that pitch in the few weeks of ST. I love Phil, but I do think he will have some serious struggles next year. As to the pitching staff? CC is a horse. AJ? I will not give up on him – I don’t think he had as bad a year as people think he did. That month of August killed him, but too many have forgotten what he did early in the season and then in June and July. I’m perfectly fine with AJ. Andy ? I don’t know that he will be as good as he was this year, that’s why it’s vital for Joba to be good. I do think Aceves and Gaudin could be options for the rotation. They could use another pitcher, but by no means do they require a Lackey or a Doc.

No offense pat but that Twitter thing looks bogus. The “SportsDiva” covers the Yankees home and away? For what paper or website or publication? What real writer “twitters” anonymously? Every single columnist, blogger, talking head etc. has an account with their name attached. Plus, a real writer wouldn’t say they’re signing Jeter to a 3 year contract, because in reality it would be an extension. There’s a pretty clear difference and I know Chad, Josh, Sam and even Pete would have been as specific.

Genau is not part of the translation in this instance. It is an expletive of agreement to emphasize “this trophy belongs here”.

For instance, Jeter says “this trophy belongs here” and I say “genau”, which indicates that I agree with him. In English, one would say “exactly”.

“If the Yankees do not get Granderson I think the consensus is that they will go after Crawford which I am not thrilled about. I think he will cost too much and a potential OF of Crawford, AJAX, and Swish is serious lacking in power.”

I like Crawford but I do think he might be getting over rated a bit partly from the fact that people right now have rightly pointed out the negatives to signing Holliday and Crawford has sort of been positioned as a good choice because his signing would be better than signing Holliday.

Better than Holliday however doesn’t particularly mean Crawford independently on his own merit is a good signing, however.

Crawford is an odd player because he actively takes aways a significant portion of his value. For whatever reason, he does not like to play CF and does not like to lead off.

Crawford’s biggest plus as a player is his defense. He is truly a dominant defensive outfielder. As such, it’s unfortunate for the team he plays for that he doesn’t want to play CF. I guess he’s a bit like Ichiro in this regard. As a CF he’d be a particularly valuable player. As a LF he’s a good player but not as valuable as he should be.

With Crawford people are assuming that he’ll come much more cheaply than Holliday and ergo people are enthusiastic about him. I can see that from a value perspective.

That said, Holliday is a much better, much more complete player.

If Crawford signs for 4 yrs/ 44-48M next year (assuming he hits the market) and Holliday goes this year for 7 years $140M or something then sure Crawford is the better choice.

But that doesn’t remove the limits to crawford’s game. He doesn’t hit for much power and doesn’t get on base all that much.

And it’s unclear for how much Holliday will sign for this year. I just don’t see where the huge money demand is going to come for Holliday other than the Sox. If they sign Bay I don’t think Holliday is going to break the bank the way people are assuming.

And with Crawford, he really must be signed to as short a deal as possible because as he ages and loses his legs his game is going to fall apart.

  50. timo

    1. Damon would be a disaster in SF.

    2. I attended a school the motto of which is “Die Luft der Freiheit weht.” You can insert the name of just about any Red Sox player in place of the first four words and it works very well.

  51. CB

I should also add that for Tampa it doesn’t matter as much that Crawford doesn’t like to play CF because Upton is a terrific CF when healthy.

But the next team he plays for isn’t likely to have that luxury. And before Upton got there it hurt the Rays that Crawford didn’t play CF because Baldelli was always hurt and not nearly as good an OF as Crawford.

  53. Pat M.

CB, So what you’re saying about Carl Crawford’s legs is really not so far off from the concerns that I have about Johnny Damon….At least Crawford has the leather…..He’d be worth so much more if he would be patroling Centerfield rather than left…….By the way, Holliday is a very good ballplayer….20 million per for 7 years, I’m not liking him for that…..Granderson at 6 mil is a steal, even if he tops out at 10 million in a few years…..

    Haiku-man

thanks for the sportspyder.com link,it’ll save me a lot of time.

  57. CB

    Pat,

Johnny has already lost a ton in his legs. Damon wound up being a terric free agent signing on that 4 yr/52M deal. But in many ways it was fortunate and surprising that he produced value over all 4 years.

Basically Johnny’s defense fell apart. In CF he became completely non-viable. Most times if you have to move a CF to a corner slot the player loses nearly all of his value because corners’s produce so much more. Johnny had enough bat to play in LF and that’s what really saved his career in the Bronx.

That said I share your concerns. To me, Damon would be best served now as a DH who might play the field every so often rather than as a full time LF.

But then that doesn’t really solve the yankees problem. They still need a LF. And then you’d have to decide on Matsui vs. Damon.

For a while I was thinking it would be better to bring back Damon as a DH.

But at times this season Damon’s bat speed concerned me. Matsui’s knees don’t look good but if they are ok then his swing is still just terrific.

It’s not an easy situation and this all gets back to the years they team wasted not developing their minor league system. It’s taken quantum leaps forward since 2005 but the team had to (rightly) focus on building up the pitching reserves first.

7 of the 12 pitchers on the World Series Roster were home grown. 5 of them had roughly 2 years of experience in the majors or less.

But there’s still a lack of depth in the position players. Can’t do everything at once. And that’s hurting them right now.

I’d offer Damon a year. Possibly a year with an option and then put the ball in his court. He wants to come back. The yankees have leverage – they should use it.

  58. KC

I would translate that quote as “Right here is where this trophy belongs.” And yes, it’s a Jeter quote, found on the Web variously as “Now this thing is right where it belongs” and “This is right where it belongs.”

The link to the online version of the story, for those who can read German, is:

    http://derstandard.at/12567440.....es-am-Ziel

  59. CB

“Imagine what he could do on grass where his lower legs won’t be getting killed by turf”

He’d also be slower, steal fewer bases and fewer of his ground balls would get through the infield.

The turf at the trop is awful and it will really hurt Crawford in the long run, but so far in the short run it’s likely helped support his relatively high BABIP.

He’s only had an OBP of over .350 twice in his career. That’s a real problem.

  60. Get it right please!

As for Alex, cold is leaving your wife and children to date!!

He’s got my attention NOW,plus he’ll only be 29 in march!!

  64. Bronx Jeers

    I’d take Matsui as well.

    Why?

Because he’s ageless(?) and hits with aplomb(???)

Also, “He’s a complete player who always has taken pride in contributing to all facets of the game.” (As long as you don’t count defense.)

But most importantly, he provides many .55 cent off coupons for fans of Japanese curry.

  65. Jeremy

Cash should make the trade for Granderson.

  66. Pat M.

Jeremy….I don’t know exactly how strong this rumored Granderson is on the market really is, but if Cashman can make a good trade for him he has to make it happen…….I was just looking over Matt Holliday’s career, it’s going to be interesting to see how it’s going to work out….He’ll be 30 in January and sports some real good numbers….20 mil for 5 years would be a good deal….

  67. Jeremy

    Pat M.
I agree this is a chance for the team to get younger and more athletic. Cash has to look into it.

  72. Heyya

I don’t like the idea of Damon as a DH. Corner outfielders are suppose to produce, but more so DH’s need to produce. I think for another year, or two, Damon can hold his own in left field, and still hit. Now, I rather go another route, but is there another route to go? I’m not so sure.

  73. ChrisAutriche

Wow, nice to see I am not the only Yankees fan in Austria.

Anyway, some info – the newspaper (”Der Standard”) is probably the highest quality newspaper here. There sports section is not very big, but they do report about US sports fairly regularly.
However, to put things in perspective – US sports results are regularly published in basically all majors newspapers (although the NBA, NFL and NHL (due to Austrians playing, like Thomas Vanek) are probably bigger than baseball here) as well as the major online news portal orf.at
We get a few NFL games plus the Superbowl on public TV as well.

The article itself (if the online version is the same as the print version) is nothing to write home about, it’s really a summary of the Yanks in a few paragraphs.

  74. Boogie Down- Hot Stove

    Slow News Day?

  75. Betsy

No way I give Holliday $20 million a year……I do not see the Yankees having any interest in giving out any more long term deals.

As to Granderson, he may not even be available when the Yankees might need him. They are delayed in having their meetings and by then, other teams have had theirs. The Tigers aren’t going to wait around for the Yankees to meet, to discuss and to find out whether Damon is going to accept their offer or not.

CB, you’re right about the Yankees lack of depth in positio prospects hurting them. It’s why I find it odd that so many fans (not necessarily here) have no compunction about trading away our young players. They keep saying that younger doesn’t necessarily mean better, but while that’s true, how do they know that the younger players won’t BE any good if they don’t get a chance? I guess I’m referring to AJax (because no one want to trade Montero and we have nobody else close to the majors)………It’s like because he doesn’t project to be a star, we should just dump him for anyone. There’s nothing wrong with it if he turns out to be a good, solid player.

That said, it sure would be nice to develop some position prospects……

  76. roger(live from Amsterdam)

I mean come on!Posting a Austrian artikel about the Yankees and NOT a Dutch one?Ridiculous..haha

  77. Doreen

Cashman has had successful dealings with Dombrowski (Detroit) in the past, and it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that he can place a quick call, let Dombrowski know they may be interested, but can’t make a proposal just yet, and could he let them know if someone else makes a proposal first before going ahead with a deal.

But, really, who knows what’s going to happen.

All I know is that over the past 4 or so days, I’m becoming more and more capable of being able to “deal with” the possibility that neither Damon nor Matsui will return. Don’t get me wrong – I’ve been in the camp of wanting them both back, but only for the short term. And it appears that both of them are interested in longer term contracts than the Yankees would be or should be willing to offer. Plus, Matsui wants to be an outfielder, not simply a DH. After having lived with Matsui’s knees for the better part of 3 seasons now, I don’t believe the Yankees would risk even one inning of Matsui in the outfield, whether or not he does extensive rehab this off-season. It’s not likely a risk worth taking, especially if they find another outfielder to replace Damon, who, as much as he wants to stay in New York, has an agent who is saying he can play another 4 years.

If I’m Damon, and I want to stay with the Yankees as much as he’s said he does, then I would go one year with an option and then see what’s what. Because you don’t know from one year to the next what the situation will be.

Matsui is the perfect #5 hitter behind ARod, but if he gets offers from elsewhere that would allow him to play the field, I expect him to take one of those.

All of which make Granderson a lot more attractive. But they’d still then need someone to fill in for Matsui. And there really isn’t anyone.

So, if I’m the Yankees, I offer Matsui a contract with some incentives for if he is in fact capable of playing some outfield next season. If that’s doable.

  78. Erin

Erica-did you see next weeks TV Guide? It’s the “hot” issue, and they did a poll on TV’s hottest vampire. The top honor went to Count von Count!! :)

  79. Betsy

Doreen, I basically agree…….though I can’t imagine any team offering Matsui the chance to play in OF on a regular basis. The only reason his knees held up (and they barely did – the guy had to get them drained twice) is because he didn’t play the field. If Damon doesn’t take a 1 plus an option, then it’s goodbye………..He understands very well (as does Matsui) the position the Yankees are in and how they are thinking ahead towards the future. As I’ve said, these guys are going to have to compromise in order to stay.

    Betsy -

You would think with Matsui that the field is limited to the AL, where he can at least be used as a DH to rest his knees on occasion. And then you have to whittle that down to AL teams that play on natural grass. I would think his market is going to be fairly small. But there are crazy teams out there (SF anyone?). :)

  85. Crawdaddy

    Betsy,

What do you mean the Yankees are delayed in having their meetings? I thought they were scheduled for next week.

  86. Doreen

Re: ARod – why assume ARod broke it off? She could have. Or maybe it wasn’t a “serious” relationship, but just a lot of fun for both of them while she as on hiatus between films.

I still can’t believe she’s in “Nine.” Not a single serious singer in the lot of actresses, and that is a very serious singing musical. Well, I suppose the overdubbers are going to be very busy. :)

  87. 86w183

I don’t believe Matsui cares about playing the OF.

He says he can and wants to in order to increase his attractiveness, especially to NL teams. I don’t think he or Damon gets a multi-year guarantee from the Yankees with the amount of DH type talent out there. It’s a pretty simple supply and demand calculation.

Acquiring Granderson makes a lot of sense, but it all comes down to the price. I’d be really hesistant to move Austin Jackson, but I’m sure he’s the key guy. No way they get a high level pitcher unless it grows to include Edwin Jackson.

I’m curious about how the regulars here feel about the best young talent and who if anyone is “untouchable”. My list of young guys I’d least like to trade in order is Hughes, Joba, Montero, Robertson, Jackson, McAllister, Romine and Nunez.

  88. Erin

Doreen-I’ve heard Kate’s been getting rave reviews for Nine. I’m anxious to see it-I think it looks really good.

As for the rumors they broke up, I won’t believe it ’til I see it in People. ;)

  91. Doreen

    Erin –

I actually can’t wait to see the movie. It just always bothers me how when they make musicals into movies, the singing is a secondary consideration. I understand, they want to attract people to the theater and someone unknown (well, unknown in Hollywood) isn’t going to do that no matter how well they sing. I mean, even Julie Andrews, who was the original Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, had to take a back seat to Audrey Hepburn, and then the lady who actually did the singing got no film credit.

It’s just that Hollywood doesn’t really make stars anymore, do they?

(And I have never understood people’s attraction to Nicole Kidman, but that’s just me.)

There’s a magazine out this month (I forget which one) with a picture of 4 of the “Nine” ladies on it wearing gorgeous magenta gowns – it looks stunning.
