Who says Jeter doesn’t have range?

So, in addition to having a career year, winning the World Series and spending most of his free time with Minka Kelly, Derek Jeter is also breaking into acting. Clearly impressed by his performance in the now-famous conga line commercial with George Steinbrenner, Hollywood types have the Captain playing himself in an upcoming movie called “The Other Guys.” Jeter, who also plays an older version of himself, was shooting scenes for the movie in Coney Island on Thursday.

According to one plot description, Jeter is shot in the leg by two cops – played by Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg – who wrongly fire on Jeter after seeing him with a bat. Since the film is directed by Adam McKay, who also did “Anchorman” and “Talladega Nights,” one  can only imagine that hilarity ensues.  For the full cast (which includes the lovely Eva Mendes, Sam Jackson and – seriously – Paris Hilton), click here.

Also, since some of you e-mailed asking about my vacation – and because I know the love we all share for food on here – I thought I’d give a quick summary in terms of cuisine. Jess and I went to the Cape for a few days and enjoyed cupcakes from the Black Dog Bakery, lobster rolls from several places, pancakes for the table (of course!) at Betsy’s Diner and a fantastic swordfish dish at a new restaurant which I’d recommend to anyone called The Glass Onion in Falmouth. Nice ambiance, fresh fish, good flavors — so far as I could tell, it’s the best part of Red Sox Nation I’ve found.

We also snacked on fudge while going candle-pin bowling one night, which I quickly learned is a) nothing like Wii Bowling; and b) really frustrating. Still, a great time was had by all and I appreciated all of you who e-mailed. I would think things in the Hot Stove will stay quiet for the rest of the weekend, but I’ll check in a few times before Chad and I get back cranking on Monday.

That movie should be good, despite the fact that Paris Hilton is in it. But the fact that Jeter is in it more than makes up for Paris being in it.

Sam, sounds like you had a great vacation!!

  2. Matt

Duck/Candle Pin bowling is frustrating as anything.

Joe Torre could almost hear the banter in the dugout. Watching on television as the Yankees played in their first World Series since he left, the four-time champion Yankees manager knew exactly what Derek Jeter was saying as the camera zoomed in on him after Hideki Matsui hit a home run in Game 6.

“Every time they’d bring a lefthander in, Derek Jeter would say in the dugout, ‘Don’t bring a lefthander for Matsui, don’t do that’ and invariably Matsui would hit a double or a home run,” Torre said. “When the camera went to Jeter in the dugout after Matsui hit a homer, it was like I could hear him saying ‘I told ya so.’”

    “The Other Guys”

Which part of Wahlberg was in control when he was dealing with Jeter? The rabid Southie, Red Sox fan or “Marky-Mark”?

Gotta figure Marky-Mark can respect Jeter’s Gangsta, while the Southie part of him wouldn’t mind being known as the guy who broke Jeter’s nose for no reason.

Wonder what those two talked about?

Betsy’s Diner? LOL How appropriate. It sounds like you had a great time, Sam – I’ve never been to Cape Cod. My sister goes every year, though – I may need to join her one of these days.

    As to Damon:

Damon needs to take charge here, not Boras. Boras is just doing his job, but he works for Damon. When the Yankees make an offer (and Johnny knows their position – he knows why they can’t offer him a longer term deal than 1 and a team option, or something like that) and Boras starts playing games, the Yankees won’t wait around for him. There won’t be any game playing because the team can’t afford it. They love Johnny and they would like him back. They are well aware of the positives he brings and they also know that Boras is often full of hot air. If Johnny wants to be back, it’s going to be up to him to take the bull by the horns. If not, it’s all on him if he ends up unhappy elsewhere.

I saw pics of Jeter looking like a long-haired bum – hilarious, lol

thanks for the link. I am glad Torre is still so close w/ his former players. I didn’t like the way it ended for Torre in NY, but in retrospect it was best for both Torre and the Yankees.

When my son was young we spent quite a few summer vacations camping on the Cape. Between the beaches, the bike trails and Cape Cod baseball it was a favorite spot.

I went up to Flamouth this summer. Love it. The people are mostly friendly up there. It was very different driving. People stop for EVERYTHING. I had to learn to take my foot off the gas! Betsy’s Dinner was great. I loved the ‘note’ they had on the menu!

  10. DB

Not for nothing, but Jeter doesn’t look like a bum. He looks like Derek Jeter with a wig on. He’s got tight curly hair that he inherited from his Dad. The least they could have done was give him some long nappy hair or something. I like Farrell and all but if this movie us going the way I think it’s going I will never watch it. You can throw it in the pile of crap like that chick flick about the two red sox fans.

If you focus mainly on what most of these guys have done since leaving baseball, what a depressing montage! I guess 4 rings doesn’t necessarily get you peace and happiness.

  18. Erin

bru-I did. That’s a great article! That picture of Jeter on the first page just stuck out.

  19. Erin

bru-I have to edit something-I shouldn’t really say great article considering how some of those guys ended up-but it was very entertaining.

  20. bru

the strange one was leyeritz rounding the bases after his ws hr then a video still image from a police car with him being arrested or a sobriety check

Jon Heyman’s on WFAN with Evan Roberts – I missed the first part; anyone catch if they talked about the Yankees? Thanks

  22. bru

    very sad

my friend in ft lauderdale knows jim l. from playing softball

he saw him at the bar a few times there also

the same bar he left the night he hit & killed that woman

i dont see us trading a lot for granderson

some opinions say that it could cost ajax & one of hughes/joba

    i never do it

  24. Mike RI

Granderson would be nice. but i think a trading war could emerge and some team may be overpaying ( with prospects ) for his services .

  25. yankee21

bru,, what rationale opinion has been spouted that Granderson would cost AJAX and one of Joba/Hughes?

That’s a quick phone call if that is the price.

  26. roger(live from Amsterdam)

If you could get Granderson with Robertson,Melky and A-jax..would you do it?

  27. Sony

All I can think of is… “Black Hammer, White Lightning.”

  28. Jaake

i’m having serious baseball withdrawal! Someone needs to turn up the heat on the hot stove really soon. looking at you cashman

it doesnt matter because it is a persons opinion

i read that it might start with ajax & could take 1 of joba/hughes

    i dont agree

i think ajax, kennedy & maybe another gets it done

    No

I used to think Joe Mauer should win the MVP, but the more I read about the MVP debate, the more I’m convinced that Jeter deserves it this year.

Was there a better leadoff hitter in baseball this year? He improved so much defensively, stole a high number of bases, hit for a high average, scored a ton of runs, high OBP, and even drove in some runs of his own. I don’t know that Mauer stepped up in the way that Jeter did this year, slotting into the #1 spot in the order as he is “aging” and there are doubts about his production and fielding.

Jeter had a magnificent season when all things are considered and I have been swayed to his side of the argument for the MVP this year.

It’s too bad I’m not a BBWA voter, cause I think Mauer’s going to win it anyway.

  32. charlestonchew

The Yankees are fine without Granderson, so you don’t overpay for him. You get him if there’s a fair price that includes Melky and a couple higher end pitching prospects, but you do not give up Jackson and Hughes or Jackson and Joba for him. That’s ridiculous.

The Yankees are not going to act desperate and fight teams in trade wars. Last year, Cashman picked up a very solid right fielder for almost nothing. He’ll do something similar this year if we don’t resign Damon. If we don’t resign Matsui, he’ll find a DH the same way.

Let’s not act like Granderson is a must-get.

The Red Sox are in that situation. They *must* get a SP, a LF, and a 3B if they trade Lowell (they really need to act on Figgins)

  33. just another handle

Jeter in a trench coat and a silly looking wig is still DJ. Sort of like dressing Marilyn Monroe up as a bag lady but you know you can’t get that picture out of your head of her standing on a grate with her dress being blown about.

    Bad casting.

Now DJ in a buddy flick as a wingman for Brad Pitt has possibilities. Naturally, the smooth fielding Jetes steals the girl from Brad who just happens to be Angelina Jolie and they have many hot scenes together!

Eye candy for the ladies and the guys in roles that are believable.

  34. yankee21

bru,, agreed, that deal is a no-brainer. In fact,, AJAX and IPK would be about the max I would go for Granderson, unless your talking a low ceiling prospect or someone like Phil Coke in addition.

  35. roger(live from Amsterdam)

I would do the deal if it’s Kennedy and A-jax.But not anything more then that.

But do you guys think that Detroit would do that deal??

  36. yankee21

If I’m DET, unless I’m desperate to unload salary, I don’t trade Granderson for IPK and AJAX.

  37. pat

Who was the last Boras client the Yankees wanted and didn’t get?

Cashman knows how the Boras game works and plays it with him while other teams try to play against Scott.

Manny likely will start out in Tampa and wind up in Trenton, much to my delight.

Brackman reportedly was more consistent with his delivery and command once they dropped the change from his repertoire and put him in the bullpen.

He also experienced the usual velo spike out there.

If he can stay healthy and on course, Brack will get his ML introduction as one of our righties out of the bullpen, joining D-Rob and Melancon, towards the end of 2010. No need for Joba/Hughes to be disrupted. I can see Melancon as handling 2-plus innings out of there, and the others shorter relief.

If Garcia could ever, ever, ever stay healthy, he’d be insane as Mo’s setup man to get his feet wet in the majors.
