An offseason home run

The Yankees hosted the first Damon Runyon 5K for Cancer Research this afternoon at the Stadium, with more than 2,500 participants helping raise more than $300,000 for scientists trying find a cure.

Check out this story for details on the race, which saw runners using the entire park – they circled the concourses and the field itself. Kudos, too, to the Yankees for being part of such a worthy cause.

When the new Stadium was built there was a lot of talk about how it needed to be more than just a baseball stadium. Football and hockey events will certainly be nice to see in the Bronx, but events like this one are even better.

That may be it for the blogging tonight. Enjoy the football game and check back tomorrow for the first of our award preview posts and then the announcement of the Rookies of the Year.

congrats to all the participants for such an amazing cause. I certainly hope the best and brightest can find a way to erradicate this insidious disease

  2. Doreen November 15th, 2009 at 6:18 pm

Great cause. I hope it becomes an annual event and I plan on learning more about it, so I can do more than just read about it.

I’m also glad the Yankees are reaching out for more ways to make the stadium part of the fabric of the life of the City.

I hope they do HOPE Week again next year.

There were just so many positives to this year’s Yankees’ season, weren’t there?

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, Sam (and Chad & Josh).

What would really be a cool event is a big time fight, boxing that is.

Pacquiao vs Mayweather would be INSANE!

  4. Erin November 15th, 2009 at 6:29 pm

Doreen-I would think HOPE week would be a given for next season. Everyone seemed to get a lot out of it, with AJ getting everyone to sign the belt to auction off for Camp Sundown. Plus, didn’t they have a really long win streak that coincided with it? So they have to do it again next year! ;)

  5. Doreen November 15th, 2009 at 6:36 pm

    Erin -

Not only a win streak – I believe those first few walks-offs (three in a row) were during HOPE Week – at least I think they were. There was so much good “karma” going on this season, it made it that much more enjoyable to root for this team. :)

An actual good refereeing call in the Cowboys-Packers game. I never thought I’d see the day.

If anyone remembers, there was a Jets game last year against the Broncos at home. There was a fumble and Cotchery was laying on top of it with possession. A Bronco hit our guy on the ground, the ball came loose, and the Broncos recovered it for a game and season changing Touchdown.
The Jets went to challenge that Cotchery had possession, and the refs said they could not challenge it because the possession on a recovered fumble was a judgment call by the refs and cannot be challenged.

Watching the game at the time, I figured the refs made up a new rule about not being able to challenge that play to screw the Jets. In the end, they screwed them anyway with that terrible call that Cotchery did not have possession.

Same thing happened in this Cowboys game, and the refs went to the replay, then came out and said that the Cowboys could not challenge it, as it was not reviewable.

I never thought I’d see that call ever made again.

I heard about this. Kudos to the Yankees and the participants. great cause!

I really think that all the things that the Yankees did this year beginning with Hope Week, brought good Karma to the Yankees.

I think it brought good karma as well. Aside from karma, can you imagine the amount of lives the Yankees touched and the amount of happiness they brought those children, especially the ones with the illness that prevents them from being in sunlight.

Just got back from the Titanic exhibit in NY – just fantastic. I’m a Titanic buff and now I recall having seen this in Philly years ago. Still, I loved it even more this time. You go in and get a boarding pass with the name of a passenger on the ship. My passenger was a woman in first-class………and she went down with the ship… Brunch in NY, a fantastic exhibit – just a great day.

I see nothing new on the hot stove front. One thing I will say is that I don’t believe there is any way Hal would be willing to take on a bad contract. There is a budget, clearly; we may not know what it is, but there is one. More importantly, Cashman has no desire to take on bad contracts. He’s finally rid of the albatrosses like Giambi…….and now to take on more? No way.

    Hope Week was July 17-24th

    Walk-off Weekend was May 15-17th

If NYY plans to sign of only one of Matsui and Damon, I’d like to see them explore a deal for Ryan Doumit from Pittsburgh. He’s not only a solid catcher with a good bat, but, he’s also a good right fielder, and he has experience at first base in a pinch.

Thanks – everything started getting all jumbled up for me – especially all the good things. But 2 months apart? Whew – boy, was I off!

Did they at least have some exciting wins during HOPE Week? :)

  14. jennifer November 15th, 2009 at 7:53 pm

are there pictures of this event?

  15. Kevin S. November 15th, 2009 at 7:54 pm

CR9 – I think they actually blew the call on the fumbled punt return. The knee went down, but it came back off the ground before the ball was knocked loose. IMO, it was impossible to tell if McBriar touched him before the knee came back up, so down-by-contact should not have been ruled.

Saw video on TV yesterday of Johhny playing in a charity golf tournament and hitting a ball into the grandstand.

Baseball fans are much more appreciative of balls being hit into the seats than golf fans.

Damon went to the GreenBeret7/Orville Moody Golfing Acadamy. I passed on the tips that Orville Moody gave me….”Find another line of work”. He did however win the Golden Shankapotomus Award.

  19. CR9 November 15th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

    Kevin S.
I was talking of a different play. Romo fumbled, the Cowboys guy recovered while on the ground, got hit and lost the ball to the Packers guy. It should have been ruled down on the field, but since the refs on the field did not view the Boys guy as having possession, it was nonreviewable.
On the play you’re talking of, I agree. They should not have overturned that because on the replays shown on TV, there was no conclusive evidence to overturn the call on the field. But we cannot forget that the refs get different angles and closer angles in the replay booth.

    Erica,

I was reading through a few posts and saw an earlier post from you-

I have “Don’t Eat the Pictures” (when Sesame Street got locked in the Metropolitan Museum of Art) on VHS for that very reason. I’d kill to have it on DVD.

A company called Roxio has a program that’s simple to use, where you hook your VHS to your computer and copy the tape to a dvd. The cost is only $59.00.

    I hope this helps :-)

“cancer research” is a euphemism for drug money.

yes, please give – line the pockets of doctors, pharmacists, and “researchers” to create more drugs the doctor will prescribe which will interfere with your immune system, and whose side effects will eventually kill you – or your aging parents.

Scare the hell out of people that they are doomed without the designer drugs, and send a sympathy card to the family when the patient doesn’t make it.

As long as the doctor, pharmacist and “researchers” line their pockets in the name of “cancer research”, iatrogenic murder will continue to be sanctioned by society.

Not sure how exciting they were, but the Yankees were undefeated during HOPE week :-)

Funny but, I have a sister named Hope. When I heard about HOPE Week, I told her the Yankees named a week for her. LOL. After the millionth post contest, Pete sent me a HOPE Week pin. I gave it to my sister… she loved it :-)

I have actually been considering buying a VCR that converts to DVDs. I think I am waiting for prices to come down a little or a really good sale. I’d like to rescue some old home movies from VHS doom and paying someone to do it makes no sense.

When are the Yankees going to have the meetings to discuss their plans?

I need news, any news: Such as Cashman looked hungry as he left the meetings perhaps suggesting he wants to feast on the trade market.

I’m that desparate, and frankly, this board has taken the weekend off. I’ve come to rely upon you all. So let’s hear some scoop, ideas, memories from Granderson’s third grade teacher. Anything.

Anyone know where I can find a Jeter shirt for 6 year old boys. The small youth looks to big for them. I also want to get a pink Jeter shirt for a girl.

I completely agree with you. Make sure you get the right amount of vitamins and eat a healthy diet. Your immune system will “magically” take care of the rest. The drug companies are killing us all.

    Let’s go Colts.

“Did they at least have some exciting wins during HOPE Week?”

Well, before HOPE week the Yankees were 3 games behind the Red Sox (this was right after the ASB). HOPE week propelled them to first place in the division and they never looked back!

  30. jennifer November 15th, 2009 at 9:57 pm

I’m sure they will continue to run it. Jason Zillo said he hopes all teams around the league adopt it that everyone got a lot out of it.

    Matt Holliday

    2009 team: Cardinals.

Rumored to go: The Mets, Yankees, Red Sox and other big-market, free-spending teams are expected to at least kick the tires, and the Cardinals would like to bring back their left fielder at the right price.

Bold prediction: The Yankees once again will sign the best player on the market.

Lackey would really help the Mets. Damon can hardly play left field at the Stadium, can you imagine him playing left at Citi Field. It would swallow him up. Mets won’t sign him.

    way to choke Pats haha

  37. CR9 November 15th, 2009 at 11:47 pm

What a comeback by the Colts!

What a brilliant coach Bill Belichick is. No joke. Just because it did not work out, does not mean it was not the right decision. Basically, video game coaching at its finest. And honestly, it looked like the guy did have possession at the first down line, not where he landed on the ground.
And the way the Patriots always act with a sense of impunity, their use of the timeouts came back to cost them. If anything was poor coaching, it was the use of the timeouts.

  38. CR9 November 15th, 2009 at 11:49 pm

All I’ve got to say about Bill Belichick is, besides having a great football mind, he has one HUGE PAIR OF…

  39. JZ November 16th, 2009 at 12:02 am

How stupid is Belichick?! That’s the worst call I have ever seen in a NFL game!

    Congrats, Colts and Peyton!

  40. HAIKU-MAN November 16th, 2009 at 12:03 am

Colts 9-0 ans 3 up in the division on the Colts.I love to see Brrady lose!

  41. Kevin S. November 16th, 2009 at 12:35 am

CR9, I agree completely on that. Belichick decided 35-40 yards of field position was worth trying to win the game with his historically great quarterback instead of putting it in the hands of Indy’s historically great quarterback. 30 other coaches in the league don’t even consider going for it there, and the only reason I don’t say 31 is because this Dolfan’s irrational exuberance over Tony Sparano’s clock-managing skills has lead me to mentally assign him super-hero powers. :-P

  42. JZ November 16th, 2009 at 12:52 am

I LOVE to see Belichick LOSE

He doesn’t think any sox will win any awards.

    Erica & RS –

YES! They had a great week (but it wasn’t the walk-off series)! Both were so uplifting and I can’t believe I confused the two. I do remember at the time that HOPE week seemed to really propel them forward. Funny how none of the broadcasters pointed to that week as a “turning point,” at least not specificially citing HOPE Week.

    Erica -

I have used the Roxio program that KF mentions to transfer all our old home movies to DVD. If you do a straight copy it’s really easy. It also allows you to do some editing if you need to. The only tricky thing was setting up the VCR near the computer. :) My parents, however, got the VCR to DVD copier at Costco or one of those big stores for a very good price and had good results with that.
