Two surgeries that made the Yankees

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Nov 15, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

I’ve had a few emailers asking about Alex Rodriguez and a second potential hip surgery, since it had been originally said that he might need a follow-up procedure to the one he had back in spring training. Remember, though, that A-Rod’s doctor said during the playoffs that he did not believe Rodriguez would need that second procedure since Rodriguez has healed so well.

Meanwhile, David Waldstein did a great piece about another medical procedure – the one on Hideki Matsui’s knees – that was meaningful to the Yankees this season. It’s interesting to hear that Matsui may well need another operation to keep playing, though a doctor seems to think he could still be a part-time outfielder if a team wanted that. As we know, the Yankees – if they keep him – see Matsui as a DH-only.

Must be quite the doctor if he thinks he can make Matsui’s knees strong enough to play the outfield.

Not sure if anything has been posted on this here, but the Damon Runyon 5k was at Yankee Stadium today. I just got back, and it included 2 laps around the warning track. Truly an awesome experience, and for a great cause too.

I don’t know much about surgeries, but I heard it said that Matsui’s performance in the World Series was the bee’s knees.

Since it’s a slow week in Yankee land –

Has anyone heard when the old Yankee Stadium will be torn down? What are they waiting for? Shea Stadium demolition was over a year ago….

They are probably still removing each and every possible part that could be sold.

The difference here is that NO ONE has fond memories of Shea Stadium. Quite a different story w/ YS

That’s great that Alex healed so well that it looks like he won’t need the second surgery.

Wow. Doing a google search – there is actually a demolition of Yankee Stadium website?
    http://www.demolitionofyankeestadium.com/

I need a Nick in SF betting line on the following:
Kei Igawa’s Yankee contract vs. Old Yankee Stadium.

    Which will be gone first?

I love all of the blind rumors about granderson are out… even though the yanks have not met for one second internally….

I found an answer – that Google thing is pretty amazing…

Erica was on the right track.

“City officials initially said demolition of the stadium would begin in 2008 and finish this year, and then a park would be built in its place. But NY1 has learned the Department of Buildings issued a permit to tear down the stadium just two weeks ago.

Officials say the delay was partly due to a months-long squabble between the city and the team over who would profit from selling seats and other memorabilia that would be removed.”

The demolition permit was just approved for the old place.

It’s just a matter of time now:

anyone know if any of the major New York papers will have a ‘Hot Stove’ special edition, in the coming days ?

the yankees were very lucky so many surgeries turned out well. alex’s of course was the most important and matsui’s turned out to be huge, but what if mariano had problems with his surgery or what if posada couldn’t throw after his ?

the yankees were very lucky no one went down among the starters after wang was lost. even when pettitte’s shoulder was bothering him in mid september that could have been a devastating loss at that time of the year.

wang’s injury was handled very badly. he wasn’t given the rehab he should have received. if it wasn’t for arod’s hip doctor spotting the hip weakness it may have never been discovered.

while alex and hideki received great medical care and rehab, what happened with wang’s ?

how do the yankees control the process to make sure all’s done well ? i know the red sox and shilling were at contractual odds a few years ago about whether shilling would get a surgery he wanted.

it must be a balance between what the team wants and what the player wants.

Possibly… but there is no way for us to know… unless its that idiot Levine leaking info…. Thank god he no longer has any say in BB opps… But I simply don’t see it happening

Joel Sherman suggested that yankees may consider taking magglio in order to get granderson cheaper. He says that would be cheaper than matsui and Damon. He fails to mention they wouldn’t produce as much and that magglio is as broken down as matsui and not as good a hitter…I really wonder about some of these writers sometimes

  18. Erin November 15th, 2009 at 1:11 pm

    Off topic-

Erica, if you’re there, I have two Muppet related things:

When your DVD comes, proceed with caution when you get to the season 9 highlights. There’s a segment called “scenes from Hawaii” where they’re on the beach and Mr. Hooper in a bathing suit is not a pretty picture. LOL

And I bought myself a couple of early Christmas presents today-Christmas Eve on Sesame Street (Amazon had it really cheap) and Muppet Family Christmas (the one where they all go to Fozzie’s mom’s farm and the whole Sesame Street gang shows up along with Fraggle Rock).

noticed that. The problem/issue i have with that proposal, is the incentive clause (15 million) per plate appearances which can kick in the following year. What are you going to do, hold a player back. Don’t see how this could work…

  20. ADam November 15th, 2009 at 1:28 pm

    Vinny B,

Agreed and NO MORE OLD SLUGGERS is something I think B-Cash is sticking by

  21. blake November 15th, 2009 at 1:30 pm

That deal would cost more and make the Yankees a worse team for it.

Either bring matsui and Damon back or sign holliday. That’s the two option IMO. U give up zero prospects either way

It would not work. Luckily, Brian Cashman is not Glen Sather of the NY Rangers, and will not trade for or give aging or former stars unreasonable contracts.

IMO, we really need Hideki back as our Number 5 hitter, or someone that can replace him adequately in that position. Everyone will agree that Cano will not cut it in the 5 spot at this time, and I believe that Jorge is not a good fit for the 5 spot. Of course, our 2 spot is very important as well, which is why I would like to see Damon back, considering the alternatives.

If they need to take on a contract to get Granderson, I’d prefer one of the pitchers than Mags…either Robertson or Willis. Then I would resign Matsui to DH with Melky in LF, Granderson in CF and Swish in RF.

  25. Bill Porter November 15th, 2009 at 2:26 pm

“. . . . Either bring matsui and Damon back or sign holliday. That’s the two option IMO. . .”

Agreed 100% except with Holliday you give up draft picks which are prospects ultimately. My preference is to sign Damon for 2 and Matsui for 1 if possible.

  26. Mike from queens November 15th, 2009 at 2:30 pm

I wouldnt take Willis based on his past 2 years.

  27. Rich in NJ November 15th, 2009 at 2:38 pm

That doctor sounded like he was a little agented up.

  28. austinmac November 15th, 2009 at 3:08 pm

Blake and Bill Porter–I agree completely. My first choice is a two year year contract for Damon and one year for Matsui. If that is unacceptable, then Holliday and a lower cost OF/DH.

A strong hitter really is a necessity behind AROD if Matsui leaves. Holliday seems the only alternative and he would fill the LF spot with somewhat improved defense.

  29. Yankee44 November 16th, 2009 at 6:15 am

Hey, I’d prefer Matsui too (and he’d be cheaper), but Mags isn’t quite as awful as everyone is making out. His .310/.376/.428 doesn’t look great, but keep in mind the awful start he had. He hit .375/.430/.540 in the second half.

Without knowing what would be on the Yankee end of a Granderson/Mags deal, it’s tough to say if it’d be worthwhile.

As far as Holliday? My guess is he’s looking for a 9-figure deal — way too much money.

And along that vein, I wouldn’t mind Jason Bay. He’s hit well in the AL-East, and besides — it would tweak the Sox ;)
