Yankees waiting to announce 40-man decisions

Chad Jennings
November
19

You might have noticed a lot of teams in baseball making signficiant roster changes today and yesterday. The Rays have added Desmond Jennings and Jeremy Hellickson to the 40-man. The Orioles have added Brandon Erbe and five others. The Cardinals have added a whopping eight players.

The Yankees have added none.

I checked with Austin Jackson this afternoon just to be sure, and Jackson said he hasn’t heard anything about 40-man moves to protect players from the Rule 5 draft. You can bet Jackson will be one of the Yankees protected. If he hasn’t heard anything, the moves haven’t happened.

Things have been pretty quiet since the World Series. Might start to get a bit louder as of tomorrow.

First comment? Impossible to get one of these in the postseason

    What’s going on in Tampa?

  3. Betsy

Wave, disagree. Phil had a domino effect on the rest of the bullpen. They maintained between a 3-6 game lead for most of the 2nd half, but not an 8 game lead. Without Phil, in any case, I still think we don’t make the playoffs – that pen was atrocious for a long time……..

  4. Phil

Heyman is on MLB.com now. Says Mark DeRosa is getting a ton of buzz right now. Says Tejada is getting the most interest of the really old guys. Thinks the Brewers will be a surprise player and have talked to Lackey. Also looking at Washburn and some others. Says Dodgers won’t sign a big FA.

  5. Phil

Pardon me, he was on MLB network.

  6. CR9

Is it not funny that Jason Bay was being touted as an MVP candidate throughout the season by the media.

Now, the season is over, and Jason Bay is being downplayed by every major Boston media (ESPN and Pete A included).

They want the Red Sox to get him back, but as cheap as possible, to save them from having to spend a lot of money so they can use the excess money to do something else.

  7. Wave Your Hat

    Betsy-

Have to disagree. Hughes was useful, but it was really getting guys out of the pen, and new faces in, that did the trick. How many more wins was Hughes worth than Robertson? Some, sure, but not enough to cause us not to make the wild card! Texas was 87-75, for heaven’s sake.

  8. Pat M.

Wave, I’m surprised to see you makw that statement about Young Master Hughes……His insertation to the bullpen turned a glaring weakness into a strength, the best pen in baseball……I think you may have missed the mark on this one

  9. Mark in Tampa

The Boston offer to Bay is the signal that there will be no 100M + contracts this winter. While they may come up to as much as 5/90, they are throwing down the gauntlet. Nobody needs Bay as much as Boston, and they have set their market.

On the other hand, if Bay goes for 75M or less, I think it is that much more likely that the Yanks go after Holliday. I don’t think they want any part of him for 120+(neither does anybody else), but for 80-85M for 5 years? Maybe they go for that.

If I am Boston, I go for Holliday, though. He is a better and younger player; and it keeps him out of the Yankees hands. I don’t think the Yanks want Bay at any price, but if it goes low enough, they will jump on Holliday.

  10. Phil

Bingo, Mark. I really think there will be a sort of down market with lots of bargains for the patient teams.

  11. Wave Your Hat

    Pat M-

I’m not knocking Phil, far from it. But one reliever doesn’t turn a 103 win team into an 87 win team. Not even Mo could do that. If Robertson had been the set-up guy and not Phil, he probably would have done close to as well.

  12. Pat M.

Wave, As always you make very good points….However, just check out the Yanks record once Hughes took over the 8th setup role and compare it to prior…You may want to also check out Rivera’s save stats and I think you’ll see he just started to rack up saves once Phil was handing him the ball……I have not looked any of this up, but I’m basing this on what I recall seeing as part of the Yanks resurgance in the AL East….Of course the key factor was the return of Alex…..Robertson arrive on the scene in earnest in September or late August

  13. lets go yankees (formerly lets go twins)

As per the bullpen I love how people are saying they really hope Marte can carry over his postseason performance next year like it is a huge question or like that was the first time he has pitched well in his career.

First, Marte has been one the best LHR in baseball since 2002. He has a long track record of success. The postseason was just a true reflection of his abilities.

Also, I posted this the other day. The numbers may just be a tad off because I do not remember them exactly but Marte pitched 13.1 innings in the regular season.

12 of those innings he pitched to a 3.00 ERA and 1.00 WHIP

1.1 of those innings his ERA was 67.00

Marte is a great reliever. 1.1 innings does not make him a question mark.

“First comment? Impossible to get one of these in the postseason”

And yet, none of us are impressed.

  15. lets go yankees (formerly lets go twins)

Hughes was great his year in the bullpen, but the truth is middle relievers are just not that valuable in the grand scheme of things. That is why Joba or Hughes are not being banished to the bullpen for life.

The Yankees showed they can win in the playoffs without Hughes. In fact they won a couple games having to overcome his bad performances. The Yankees still win the AL East without Hughes.

  16. Mark in Tampa

The bulk of Hughes’ relief appearances came at the expense of Veras and Edwar. The Yankee bullpen had a dramatic turnaround not just because Hughes was so good, but also because the two he replaced were so bad.

While Phil did not make the Yanks a 103 win team from an 87 win team, had Edwar and Veras been the only two we had for that role; they might have turned a 103 win team into an 87 win team. With an MLB quality reliever instead of Phil, however, the Yankees maybe win 98-100 games instead.

Escapist teenage girl fantasy or not, you need to respect the fact that some people have daughters who love the stuff and are reading it just to have a handle on what the big deal is about.

I personally don’t see the attraction of most of the characters in these books. But as a teenage girl I raced home to watch Dark Shadows. :)

    ———————–

You think Phil Hughes accounted for 8 wins?

  29. no.27

Hughes going to the pen definitely helped turn that part of the team into a strength, but there was a lot of things going on with the team at that point.

He made his first appearance in the pen on June 8th. That was around the same time that the starters started consistently going deeper into games. Also, that wasn’t too long after A-Rod came back and gave the offense a big boost.

I’m definitely not taking anything away from what Hughes did in the bullpen. He definitely helped out a lot. That doesn’t mean that the Yankees bullpen is going to fall apart without him next year. Mariano, Robertson, Aceves, Marte, and Bruney is a good bullpen core and there are plenty options in the minors as well as some free agent options Cashman might go after.

  30. Doreen

Phil Hughes made a huge impact. His development in the bullpen from a middle relief guy to 8th inning set-up guy helped to define the roles of all the other guys in the pen.

If not him, then, possibly someone else emerges. Perhaps Robertson emerges sooner. At the very least, the bullpen gelled quite quickly once those roles were defined and that shouldn’t be underestimated. It is possible the Yankees still get to the playoffs without Hughes in that role, because they would have worked to find someone else who “clicked.” It would probably have taken a bit more time. So, the hold on the division wouldn’t have been as secure, the road to the playoffs would have been rougher, the team would not have been as rested playing in the stretch run.

You can’t really know how it would have ended. But having Hughes do the job he did certainly made it a lot better than it probably would have been.

  31. Pat M.

Doreen, So you had a crush on Barnabas Collins ???? Where the action is was the show that aired before Dark Shadows I believe……

  32. vin

The Yanks definitely would’ve made the playoffs if Phil wasn’t in the pen. I can think of 3 reasons why:

He would’ve been in the rotation – which would’ve been better than the Wang/Aceves/Mitre/Gaudin experience.

Robertson, Coke and Aceves had already stabilized the ‘pen before Hughes joined them. Hughes was just icing on the cake.

Cashman would’ve acquired someone if the need persisted.

The only thing better than the Basbeall-reference Play Index, is a free trial to the index (which expires tomorrow).

Out of curiosity, I was wondering the most HRs hit in a season that accounted for at least half of the guy’s total RBI.

Meaning – has anyone hit 40 HRs, and had less than 80 RBI?

Interestingly, the number 2 guy on the list, Chris Duncan, had 22 hrs, and 43 rbi in 2006. Sorted by HRs, the totals fall pretty quickly.

592 guys have done it, but the bulk of them simply hit 1 or 2 solo hrs, and didn’t drive in any other runs. Not very interesting.

What is interesting is Barry Bonds tops the list when he hit 73 HRs, and drove in only 137 RBI. That’s 51 MORE hr’s than the 2nd place guy. Of course there a bunch of reasons why he didn’t have more HRs:
He got walked 177 times (35 intentional)
Marvin Bernard was the most common leadoff man – and he had an awful OBP
It’s the NL, so the pitcher’s spot was also hitting not far ahead of Bonds.

    _____________________________________________

My favorite stat about Bonds and the 73 HR year is that he hit 37 HRs at home while all players on all visiting teams put together hit 46. How far back do you have to go to find another guy who, all by himself, hit 80% as many homers in his home park as did all visiting teams? Ruth?

Drugs acknowledged, hitting 37 HRs in 81 games in that park is a remarkable feat.

No, Quentin Collins, the werewolf. Although my favorite character was Angelique.

The ABC lineup was Ryan’s Hope, All My Children, General Hospital, Dark Shadows, Edge of Night. On the days I was home sick from school, the Young and the Restless was on my agenda, but that was on CBS. At first all the soaps were 30 minutes, then 45, then 60. Except Dark Shadows & Edge of Night – always 30 minutes. They were followed by a movie that ran from 4:30-6:00. Most of the time, the movies had to span two days. Ah, those were the days. :)

The problem with people who read books that become movies is that they NEVER like the movie. I do not think I have ever met anyone that has said oh I love this book and the movie was great too. I think it is because you just lose so many details going from the book to the movie. My girlfriend said the book was so much better than the 1st movie but she can not wait for the 2nd movie so I know what you are saying Vin. I think they enjoy the movie but just in relation to the book it does not come close.

That said, my GF tried to get me to read the books and I refused but she did get me to watch the movie with her and I have to admit I really liked it. It is a movie that is hard to tell if people will like it. I thought no way and I ended up enjoying it. I would recommend renting the first one to anyone remotely interested and seeing if you like it at all.

You can find holds on the mlb.com stats. You have to click ‘next stats’ twice to get to it, right next to pitches/inning pitched. They mean next to nothing, though, Coke had 21 while Phil had 18. Coke was obviously not more valuable. Holds were created to give middle relievers a stat to take to arbitration.

The reason books are so much better than movies is in large part because of the details the book provides………but also because you can get into the voices of the characters. In a movie, it’s impossible to know what anyone is thinking without them having to speak out loud. That’s boring exposition and it’s awkward. I’m a book person – I love words, any words.

Vampires? I’m a big fan of George Hamilton’s Dracula from Love at First Bite. It’s an absolutely hilarious movie – a classic.

  63. Heyya

    lets go yankees,

Your right. People almost always hate the movie because of lack of details. However, to fill in every last detail in a movie, it would end up being a tv series, and not a movie after all. I just feel like it’s a given that the movie isn’t going to be so specific, and I feel like many people set their hopes too high.

Yeah, I agree. Another aspect is books require the reader to use his/her own imagination to fill in the visuals of the story.

If the author writes that a character has brown hair and green eyes – that’ll look different to me than it would you. So when I see the brown haired, green eyed actor who doesn’t look like the person I envisioned, I’m going to be thrown off a little during the movie.

Having a lockdown “8th inning guy” is overrated. It is a nice plus to have but the yanks showed that you dont need a lock down 8th inning guy (Hughes was awful) in the postseason to win a world series. That was always the argument for people wanting Joba in the bullpen. D-Rob and Marte can do a nice job pitching the 8th next year.

Girardi is great at mixing and matching his bullpen and finding good matchups for his relievers. THe reaspn the pen was so bad in april was because the yanks had guys who dont belong in the majors (Edwar, Veras, Albaledejo.) And also Wang was brutal in april having him go 1-3 innings in his starts in april didn’t help matters.

Thats why I much rather continue to devolop Joba and Hughes as starters than put one of them in the bullpen. If they can devolop into frontline starters the yankees are set for the next 10 years. Similar how the braves were with Smoltz, Glavin, Maddux.

There is no question that Hughes helped turn the bullpen around but they are still winning it all without him. ********

    Well………

The freak two weeks of the year where I randomly find myself with absolutely nothing to do (the other 50 weeks I am up to my eyeballs) intersected with the Yankees in the ALCS and the World Series.

And of course, at the conclusion of October, my employer decided to run an internet usage report on the whole office for the first time ever.

Draw your own conclusions on the rest (I was let off with a warning)…. I am now a reformed internet addict :-)

  104. NYY626

Ouch that stinks Erica! This is probably a dumb question, but how do you they know how often you’re really on the internet? For instance, my Gmail is open all day, but it doesn’t mean I’m on gchat for 9 hours, I just leave it open.

Its kinda scary that they can track all of these things.

I am on their server as soon as I log on in the morning. They see everything I do (frightening…..).

I tried arguing the point that I often pull up websites, forget, and walk away- but they swore thsi was only counting active usage.

However, one of the things that greatly distorted my stats is tabbed browsing. I have a habit of pulling multiple websites up at once on different tabs. If I come on LoHud for 5 minutes, and Yahoo for the same 5 minutes, even though I was only online for 5 minutes the stupid internet gestapo has registered me online for 10 minutes

I’m hoping for a 5th book, or another series that appeals to her.

So if I surf the internet here and there, but my work is always done really well…. who am I really hurting?

  125. Angel - in an Empire State of mind. #27 has arrived!

    Doreen,

I definitely think thats all they’re meant to be.. fun and a little bit of harmless escapism. Of course teenage girls being teenage girls are prone to taking them a bit seriously, but I don’t see the harm in that. I got into things like that passionately when I was a teenager. I don’t take them seriously at all – but… they’re a nice bit of escapism. Isn’t that the point of reading books at times? I will go and see the new movie (and drag my husband who is nice enough to go with me, because I suck it up and go to a lot of movies for him, lol).

I think one of the best things about the books (aside from getting young girls to want to read decent-sized books) is how mothers have been reading them too so they can talk to their daughters about them. Its a really good bonding thing, and can open doors to lots of different conversations.

There is a partial draft online on Stephenie Meyer’s website of “Midnight Sun” which is the book Twilight from Edward’s perspective. Its unfinished and only 264 pages – and complete with original draft typos, lol. Its in PDF format, if you want a copy of it, I can send it to you or you can get it at her website. :)

You do realize that the Braves, with 3 Hall of Fame starters in the same rotation, won exactly one title? And that only came when they broke Cleveland’s closer.

Even after the post season we just witnessed, where almost every game got decided in the bullpen, most here still believe that late inning relief should be handled by the leftovers and misfits. Amazing.

She saw the first movie and really disliked it.
    —————————

We’re at the Wellmont Theater in Montclair NJ in 1997, seeing Kenneth Branagh’s uncut, verbatim ‘Hamlet’. Before my GF and I settle into our seats, I hear one suburban matron say to another:

“I hear it’s much better than the book.”

For those with nothing better to do, History Channel is running the last of the WWII in HD, called “Sex In WWII. They’re talking about the Honalulu party girls. some funny stuff.

    Betsy,

If you’re out there, Part IV of Nardi interview series is up on Pinstripes.

You’ll be able to get some interesting info on Brackman, as I recall our dialogue and your having asked about him.

Nothing Nardi says in there contradicts my feeling that he’ll be in the Yankee bullpen near the latter part of the season. You’ll see, though, that now they’ve dealt with his arm slot for his FB and CB, they reintroduced change and will have all three in his diet for next season,in which he’ll pitch as a starter. If he can remain healthy, I see no reason why he can’t bring that heat out of the pen for us. With Melancon added in, we shouldn’t need to add FA arms.

I prayed God for Yankees whole this year, and happy to see Yankees to be a better team than last year and win the world series champ.
Although business is business,I still think that manage a business well sometimes need adopt warm method.
So far I really dislike Yankees took cold-blooded attitude to treat Matisui and Wang at all.
Yankees can let them leave, but don’t criticize them in acrimonious and unfair and merciless way.
Matisui has excellent hitting skills and always serious in his job,and he is better than Damon obviously.
If Yankees consider age to give up Matisui,I hohe they also give up Demon.
Happy to see Yankees buy a lot of good players for fans, but sometimes do it too over will let the great team lose his legend color.
I wish Yankees to be a healthy and aggressive team, and not to be a “money team”.
A excellent GM have the ability to sign excellent players in reasonable price.
I don’t understand why Yankees always need to pay very high salary to sign player than other teams.
I like Yankees, but decide to stop to pray for Yankees.
