I’m surprised that Colin Curtis is not on the 40-man. How could they leave him unprotected after his results in the AZ league?

I feel sorry for Shelley Duncan. I hope he gets a good shot in the bigs from some other team.

Chad, if the Yankees don’t have a place or want for players like Curtis,Duff, Kroenke,Whelan or Wordekemper why not make a minor deal and trade them or release them to make room for someone else?

If Cervelli were to get injured, it wouldn’t be a big deal – I think he can be a solid backup, but the Yankees will have the depth to cover it.

As for Posada, you just have to hope he can get through another season unscathed, while Montero & Romine continue to develop. You are not going to find a backup that is capable of replacing Posada – those kinds of backups are called starting catchers. So you just hope & pray he stays healthy.

Isn’t Cervelli out of options, so he can’t be sent down to the minors without exposing to other teams anyway? That would make him the backup catcher by default.

Montero isn’t close to ready to play catcher in the majors. He has a lot of work to do on his defense. He and Romine were splitting the role until he got promoted to AA and he was injured soon afterward. Maybe its not a stretch to say his bat would be ready by the end of the year but he’s not an option behind the plate at any point next year. You can’t rush catchers. I’m not sure the Yankees view Piliterre as much more than organizational filler. I’d expect a low-cost trade or signing of a no hit/good field type for the AAA team. Remember that Cashman traded for Chris Stewart last spring even after he signed Kevin Cash when Cervelli went down.

You can lop off 50-51M in salaries from Damon, Matsui, Pettitte, Nady, Wang, Molina, Hairston, Hinske, Edwar Ramirez, Bruney, Albaladejo.

Add 6.5M for raises and arbitration eligibles. So you’ve saved about 44M from 213M year end salaries. So we’re starting at 169M:

Pettitte 12M
Damon 10M
Trade for Granderson 5.5M
Move Swisher to DH to share with Damon

Now we’re at 196.5M, without Molina, Wang, Bruney or a bench

Is my math off, trying to keep the payroll under 200M, if Hal asks that of Cashman?
