Cashman: “We haven’t game planned yet”

Just got home from the World Series DVD premier where Brian Cashman and Joe Girardi were asked one or two questions about being on the red carpet but were ultimately peppered with hot stove questions. Girardi said he’s talked to both Johnny Damon and Andy Pettitte, but he hasn’t talked to either about coming back next year. Those have been friendly, cordial conversations. Not let’s-get-down-to-business conversations.
Even if Girardi wanted to make a business phone call, the Yankees aren’t ready for those just yet.
“I’ve had my pro scouting meetings, now I’m talking to ownership about budgets,” Cashman said. “Obviously we’re working through every level on that. We haven’t game planned yet. We’re obviously going through everything that transpired from the meetings, but at the same time, now we’re meeting with ownership. Once I get confirmed numbers, then we can start putting together some ideas. I have not reached out to any agents really yet. I’ll talk to our guys first, and after I have conversations with our guys, I’ll be full blown into the market place.”
By “our guys” Cashman meant the Yankees’ free agents. Even if the team is looking to go in a different direction, Cashman will let his guys know what the Yankees are thinking before making any moves.
“I’ve had a number of agents call me,” Cashman said. “I don’t want to make the mistake of having a conversation with somebody else’s agent and then it plays out as if I’m pursuing that guy and someone misinterprets that and thinks we’re not pursuing our guys. We’re not even at that stage right. I’m going to try to be very careful and respectful to our players first, make sure they’re aware of where they are in the process.”
Once again, Cashman reiterated that last year’s free agent signings will make this winter much easier. The big pieces are in place. Girardi said the first thing the Yankees need to address is the rotation, and while Cashman didn’t assign a top priority, he did say that the bullpen ranks behind the rotation, left field and designated hitter.
“Is that an area of obvious need? No,” Cashman said. “I think you have to look more at the rotation. You have to look obviously at left field. Our discussion will have to be whether you retain a Johnny Damon, whether you promote an Austin Jackson or you look elsewhere altogether. The rotation, you never have enough starting pitching. What are you going to do with DH? I think all of those situations are a little bit more of a obvious priority than the bullpen at this point.”
UPDATE, 9:40 p.m.: I’m going back through some notes from tonight.
Cashman on whether the Yankees are going to try to get younger: “You always want to be younger, but being younger only with the idea of getting better.”
Cashman on whether the Yankees are going to try to cut payroll: “I think the big picture is to be real efficient with how we allocate our resources. I think last year is a good example that depending on who it is, we can step up in a big way, but I think we’re going to try to be careful. What careful means, it doesn’t necessarily mean slow, we’re just going to make sure that we try to spend it wisely and make the right commitments for us for the present and the future.”
UPDATE, 9:55 p.m.: Girardi said his conversations with Pettitte have given him no idea whether Pettitte is leaning toward retirement or pitching.
“He’s been busy,” Girardi said. “I know he had a golf tournament and Thanksgiving got here quickly. I’m sure he’ll take his normal amount of time.”
UPDATE, 9:58 p.m.: Girardi’s line about the need to address the rotation.
“I think the first thing you have to address is our rotation,” Girardi said. “Right now if you looked at our starters you’d say that we have two starters for sure and then you have a mix of some other guys, so I think that’s probably the first thing that we have to address. But I think that’s probably first on everyone’s list, pitching.”

I’m fine with Cash taking his time and putting his ducks in order. I also like how respectful he is towards our free agents as far as not wanting to cause any misunderstandings by talking to agents of other players before he speaks with them.
I don’t love our pen, but I certainly agree it’s less of a priority than those other areas. Still and all, Girardi is right – the big pieces are in place. The Yankees are in a great position – we just need less than other teams do – for this year and the future.
I just wonder if some trade opportunities won’t be there because the Yankees are going to move so slowly (re: Granderson)

I wonder if Cash has spoken with him…….I can’t imagine he hasn’t as they are best friends. If the Yankees are going to hire Towers, they need to do it before any big moves are made so he can have input……

It makes sense for Cash to take his time because the market hasn’t set itself yet. The Angels didn’t understand that fact when they re-signed Abreu. Unfortunately, that could raise Damon’s price.

Former Padres general manager Kevin Towers, a free-agent executive, says he will attend the winter meetings in Indianapolis and meet with three or four clubs.
“I’d like to align myself with a winning organization, someone I trust, someone I like working with — to be honest, preferably an American League team, just to become more familiar with that league,” Towers says.
“I’ve been in the National League my whole life. The way I look at it, if a GM job opened a year from now in the American League, I’d have a better idea how to put a ballclub together from American League perspective. It’s completely different than the National League.”
Towers worked for Red Sox president Larry Lucchino and helped develop Sox GM Theo Epstein in San Diego, but most in the industry assume he will end up working for the Yankees and their GM, Brian Cashman.
“Cash is certainly a good friend of mine, somebody I’ve got a great deal of respect for,” Towers says. “There is nothing done by any means. But if Brian Cashman had interest in my services, he’s somebody I’d listen to.”

I think that’s about right. Even if he has an impressive ST, it would be prudent to send him back down to reinforce what he’s been adapting. There’s no reason in the world to rush him up here – it really has hurt Melky’s bat, missing out on all that grooming time in Mil.
I say that because there’s no way the Tigers are going to wait while the Yankees get ducks in a row – they are already having talks with teams.
The pen should be okay, especially with Robertson’s continued improvement and Marte’s return to form following his shoulder troubles. Coke and Bruney are of course question marks, as is young Mr. Melancon. One key to the depth will be whether or not they see Aceves as merely a pen guy going forward or still see him as a back end of the rotation guy.
Pokey, I think Aceves is a starter; he had a mediocre 2nd half and post-season and I think that his arm didn’t handle the rigors of being a reliever. Of course I could be dead wrong and maybe he was just mediocre because teams adjusted to him. He might be a decent #5 starter. In the pen, he’s mostly a long-man.
The Yankees will have their plan set within a week. I don’t think Detroit will have a problem waiting that long. That said, I think the price for Granderson will be too high.

That’s one arm Girardi did perhaps lean on too much, and what you saw was fatigue.
Melancon just needs to be given the ball more consistently than once every 17 days, lol. And I’m sure he will get it.
I do feel that Brackman will be an important late-season addition to the BP, barring injury. Seems they’ve got his arm slot figured out and he bought what they were selling.
Somewhat more idealistically, I am hoping for Christian Garcia to actually experience a full season of health. If he does so, he can bring his sick pitching arsenal to the BP to get his feet wet.
The rest of that BP now has a championship run under its belt. Nothing like pitching under pressure to learn how to pitch under pressure.
I think Aceves has the tools to be a back end guy, and from the looks of things, so do the Yanks.
His second half went off the rails after that spot start.

Aceves will not supplant any Yankee starter in the back end of the rotation unless there is a rash of injuries. He can start for another team though, and the Yankees will ask for a commensurate return in a trade.
Coke all season was either lights out or terrible.
Melancon’s control wasn’t good when he was called up. May be a combination of not being used and nerves. He’ll be very good in time, just not sure that time has come yet.
Brackman was terrible this season. Maybe it was arm slot, or maybe he just isn’t that good. Doubt he enters a call-up conversation barring a miracle or total collapse of the pen.
How long are we willing to wait on Garcia and waste a spot on the 40 man? Talent is there, but if he can’t get on the field, why bother?
The only time Melancon has had control trouble was this year in his MLB appearances. It hasn’t been a problem for him at any other time in his career. He should be fine next season with regular work. Robertson went through some weird stuff in his first exposure to the bigs, too.

Yes, and they re-introduced the change apparently and he was still able to throw strikes w/velo. That’s huge for him.
I would be surprised if the Tigers, or anyone else for that matter, made a trade involving players the Yankees have potential interest in until they hear from the Yankees. Why not wait to involve someone who could be your highest bidder? And, as pointed out above, Cashman’s meeting with the Steinbrenners is in a 10 days, well, that’s not that long in the context of ST being in February.
I agree, I think the Angels made a mistake in moving way to rapidly to sign Bobby Abreu, especially at his age. They got a good year from him, but there’s no guarantee that he’ll be able to produce at the same level, for one year, let alone two.
However, by doing so, the Angels have set the market somewhat for Damon. They are somewhat comparable. Again, it depends on what Cash feels the LF and DH options are, and if Johnny provides better value for two years than those options.

Going to the pen would just be an introduction to the majors for him. He does have a change – so he’s not a 3 pitch guy, and he throws two curves, although the loopy one is more of a show-me pitch.
He’s also still just 23 and therefore is not -God help us – fully grown yet. And yeah, those lanky skyscraper dudes take a while to get all those parts smoothed out. He was healthy – and he finished with a bang. All good.

I got out of the dvd premiere a little while ago.
It was fantastic! Especially in HD on a big screen, but you should all buy it when it goes on sale tomorrow. They gave out copies afterwards to everyone there,
so I already have mine!
Two of my favorite non-game moments from the movie, both filmed on the field before game 1: first, Reggie Jackson speaking to jimmy rollins and saying, “you’re not playing the National League anymore this week. You’re playing the varsity now.”

Chad, just want to say damn good job on keeping us informed as to the only real actual Yankees news. I see blurbs elsewhere but never any detail of what they key Yanks folks really say. Keep up the good work. Not sure about a trade, especially for Felix, but I can see a Lackey or Wolf type signing. I would love to talk to the Marlins though to see what they want for JJ.
I took Girardi’s “two starting pitchers and a mix of other guys” comment to have more to do with uncertainty than as a vote of no confidence.
Is Pettitte coming back? Is Wang coming back? Are Hughes, Chamberlain and Aceves going to stay in the bullpen? I took it to mean that Sabathia and Burnett are the only guys certain to be in the rotation and then there are “other guys” who are possibilities.

i like to look back every now and then on the blog,and
it is interesting to see what people were thinking and how right they were.
last year on this day people were pretty on target.
as far as pete goes, we had a bit of a back and forth sparring going at that time that was resolved and i came to really like pete’s work on the blog and respect his baseball knowledge.
that said, i’m glad the blog has continued successfully with sam , chad, and josh.
and pete had an interesting article on the weekend in the globe where he wrote about ortiz saying he told the red sox to get more power last year and he’s still saying they need it. theo must have choked on his morning coffee when he read it.

another highlight, before the movie: after John introduced suzyn and suzyn introduced cashman and girardi, a guy carried the trophy down the aisle I was sitting on, and went right past me, about two feet away. I even got a nice blurry picture on my cellphone camera!
I haven’t been that close to anything or anyone that famous in baseball since I was out in Las Vegas on a case back in 1982 or so when I was a very junior lawyer, went down to breakfast at my hotel, and who was sitting at the table right next to mine but Joe DiMaggio.
For the person who asked about this, John Sterling mentioned rhat he just did the voiceover for the 2009 Yankeeography that Yes is working on, and that it should be done soon. The World Series dvd has a few minutes of regular-season highlights, with walkoffs and pies and A-Rod, and a little more on the first two playoff rounds, but it is, of course, mostly about the Series.

It’s not like it has been months now since the last WS game. When Cashman talks to him in early December then perhaps he’ll let Cashman knows if he wants to pitch next season.

To all of the obsessive / compulsive “Prospect Huggers” on this blog, it is SO important to realize that Cashmoney is not that myopic.
After the past few years where he has had primary control of “the process”, I am sure that we are all very happy with the evolution, progress and results of the past 3 years, and we are eagerly awaiting to see what Brian Cashman does this off season.
Cashmoney, that’s true……..but the Yankees can’t wait forever for Andy to make his decision. They’ve got serious decisions to make and a lot hinges on whether Andy is returning or not.
Yeah Pettitte’s been busy doing:
A: golf tournament
B: Thanksgiving (although something tells me he doesn’t do much cooking himself)
and of course,
C: filing for free agency

Given how things ended up going last off season with Pettitte not getting the deal that the Yankees were first offering, and while things worked out fine for Andy with the incentive heavy deal, I think he will be more apt to deal quicker if its his intention to play again.
He will know that the Yankees will be looking to secure the pitching rotation first. There are some moves they can make, but with other clubs being interested in possibly some of the same pitchers, the time frame might dictate how the Yankees will go. If some trade/signing they are weighing to take Andy’s place looks to be close the Yanks may not be able to wait on Andy to decide if he is even coming back.
The talk about Cashman wanting to talk to “his guys” makes me wonder what had happened with Abreu last year. Bobby had said that no one even talked to him or his agent, he seemed upset about that. Does that mean that Cashman might be more inclined to bring back his guys this year, or was it simply that Bobby had been told he wasn’t in their plans?
I think the Angels were really sold on Abreu’s work with the team, and didn’t wish to risk some other club coming in and getting him. They aren’t seeming to be as quick to deal with their other FA players.
Andy’s still waiting for that last incentive bonus to kick in?
Sorry Andy. You did give up that HR to the light-hitting Ryan Howard. We’ll give you a call when every other option is exhausted.

Did you know that an assistant of Cashman’s was in Taiwan last week? I would have posted the link sooner, but I wanted to see how things played out so I could be a little more certain why the visit was initiated.
The visit itself is not significant. However, it does give an idea of how Wang is viewed in his home country.

Betsy, there were no interviews per se, just a lot of little 30-second talking heads-type comments throughout. The people I remember who had multiple comments were Girardi, Jeter, Alex, Damon, Tex, Swisher, Matsui with subtitles, CC, AJ, Andy, and Mo (I don’t remember Posada specificaaly, but I’d be surprised if there weren’t any from him), plus a couple from Jeff Nelson for some reason, and one or two from Eiland and Kevin Long. From the media, there were lots of comments from Sweeney Murti of wfan, and some from Tyler Kepner.
To the extent there was any lay by play voiceover, it all seemed to be from the radio, from Sterling or Jon Miller. I don’t remember hearing the Fox guys. Maybe it was a rights issue.
The only disappointment for me was how very quiet the crowd was most of the time. There were several times I started clapping when something good happened, and it sounded to me like there were only a few other people clapping in the whole theater. Oh well, maybe there were just too many VIP’s and suits there from mastercard and mlb productions, etc.

Man that looks like a beautiful course….I always try to get up for courses like this…Take it nice and slow and think it out……Better hope that Par 5 # 5 plays no more than 150 yards over the marsh…Looks like a round breaker hole…….Enjoy & head your head quiet and stay down

Pat M, I’ve played this course several times, it’s great. The #5 hole is tricky, but I’ve actually had some success there in the past. #7, the Devil’s Elbow, had been very rough for me though… I’ve never even parred it.
Donna, thank you for the recap! Too bad that the so-called Yankee fans didn’t appreciate it, but I know I will be clapping when watching it in the comfort of my home during the long winter. I’m fine with hearing just Sterling……..don’t care for Joe Buck at all.
I think maybe Jeff Nelson was interviewed to give some perspective regarding this team and the dynasty teams. He appears occasionally on MLB.com, so it makes sense that he would appear on the DVD.

Chad Jennings seems to indicate that Cashman feels the “big pieces” are already in place for the team in 2010 yet Girardi says “Right now if you looked at our starters you’d say that we have two starters for sure and then you have a mix of some other guys”
That doesn’t sound very confident to me. I hope The Yankees don’t feel they can get by getting a journeyman pitcher this offseason or an innings-eater. I agree with Heyman that to compete in this division you need four solid starters who can be relied upon to take the ball every five days and giving you innings. I don’t even know if AJ Burnett falls into that category with his implosion issues…bottom line I agree with Girardi, Yankees have some issues in their rotation.
Enough with the Burnett is this and Burnett is that…Burnett is a head case…Burnett is an implosion waiting to happen. Burnett had 10 starts with 3 runs or less allowed. That runs, not earned runs.
He had 5 games in which he allowed 5 runs or less. In those 10 games, he either had a no decision or a loss. That’s 1/3rd of his starts. If he had won 17-18 games, would he still be an implosion waiting to happen?
NYY didn’t pitch him into the 8th or 9th inning often for a good reason. His innings were down a little as were his strikeouts. They had a long term goal. It worked. He walks too many and he throws wild pitches. If you are surprised by this, you haven’t been paying attention. he’s always done that. He had pretty much the same season in 2009 that they decided to pay him $16 mil a year in the first place.
Hopefully if they do sign an innings eater the guy won’t get indigestion.

PAT M, this is the same sort of idiotic remarks that people have been yammering about Rodriguez for years. Now, It’s Burnett, Cano, Cabrera and for whatever reason, Posada. I wonder exactly what some of these people are actually watching. They all have flaws…including Jeter and his GIDPs.
About the only one that has very few flaws would be Rivera, unless you consider his lack of youth as a flaw. Of course, last year and again this year, they all said that Rivera can’t pitch in tied games.

As long as Andy doesn’t demand a 2 year guaranteed contract he’ll return. Probably overpaid at $10-12 million but he’ll return. Cashman seems to be making the rotation his priority, and rightly so. But to me, the 5 options of Chamberlain, Hughes, Kennedy, Aceves, and Gaudin is sufficient to fill out 2 empty slots. Want to add a reclamation project like a Ben Sheets as your #4, fine. Depth doesn’t hurt, we all know that by now.
Damon shouldn’t use Abreu’s recent contract as his example for a new contract. I think the Angels’ offering to Abreu is more like a concession to him that they underpaid last year at $6 million. Therefore, if you average that contract with this new $19 million/2 year contract, it’s really $8.3 million a year over 3 years. The Yankees can then offer Damon that, or overpay at $10 million a year for 2 years. Damon then becomes the DH, still capable of some time in LF.
What’s surprising about Cashman’s statements, however, is that they are considering Jackson for LF, not CF. Of course, this could change, and they could shift either Melky or Gardner to LF, but it sounds like he’s suggesting Jackson in LF, Melky/Garner in CF, and Swisher in RF. I also wouldn’t be surprised if they finally got Mike Cameron for CF for 1 year, if they don’t feel that Jackson is quite ready.
The bullpen will probably be dealt with from within the organization, despite my desire to see Mike Gonzalez in pinstripes. But it would probably take $12 million over 3 years, and since bullpens are volitile, they may just go with either Coke or Dunn or both (at different times) for 1/10th the cost. Times are rough…

It makes zero sense for NYY or any team to give up a first round draft pick for a 7th or 8th round relief pitcher. Pettitte, on his request only wants a year to year contract. He said last year that he doesn’t want to feel obligated to come back if he isn’t pitching up to his standards. More power to him.
I’m expecting Pettite back and wouldn’t have a coronary over # 4 and # 5 slots being fought over y Hughes, Joba, Gaudin, Aceves etc. the Yanks should sign one low cost potential high reward reclamation project with the three best candidates being Sheets, Escobar and, of course Wang.
If Pettite retires however they need to make a strong move on a quality starting pitcher and all eyes will be on Toronto. I didn’t want Derek Lowe last year and after his 4.67 ERA in the NL last season I’m even less interested now.
Cashman was not implying Jackson to LF. He was suggesting that promoting him would be one way of filling the LF void.
If they do that Swisher is in LF and Melky in RF with Jackson/Gardner in CF. Not overly impressive offensively, but MUCH better on defense and if Matsui is the DH the lineup is still pretty stout.
I also hope they don’t trade a boatload of prospects for Halladay. Bring back Pettite and try to sign a Ben Sheets or Brett Myers for the 4th spot, and return Hughes to the 5th spot. Leave Joba in the pen with Robertson and hopefully Melancon, Coke and Marte and Aceves. I’d love to see Montero and Ajax in our lineup a year from now.
GreenBeret7, I disagree that it makes 0 sense. Maybe not to you, but that’s ok, as you are entitled to your opinion. I on the other hand, may differ. In the right circumstances it may make sense. If for example you were to understand that he could not only be an 8th inning setup guy, but also reliably the closer, thereby reducing the strain on Mo, then it may make sense. Better a fresh Mo in the post-season if it means someone else getting 5 ro 10 saves during the season.
Of course, if no arbitration is offered, then no draft pick, and he becomes more likely to be signed. But thanks for your opinion.
