World Series DVD premieres tonight

Chad Jennings
November
23

A small update while we’re waiting for the MVP results.

Tonight, Brian Cashman and Joe Girardi will attend a red carpet premier screening of the official 2009 World Series film. Michael Kay, John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman will be there as well. The premier takes place at 7:30 at the Ziegfield Theatre on West 54th Street.

There will be a second Ziegfield screening at 9:45, and the theatre just confirmed that there are tickets available for that showing. Check here for more information about additional screenings, or check here for ways to contact the Ziegfield.

Here’s more on the film itself…

The Official “2009 World Series Film” on DVD and Blu-ray features more than 80 minutes of main program presentation and nearly 30 minutes of bonus footage. This collectible DVD and Blu-Ray provides extensive coverage of the 2009 World Series, including unique game action footage, exclusive sound via wireless microphones, and in-depth, one-on-one interviews with Yankees players, coaches and team personnel.

The Official “2009 World Series Film” on DVD will go on sale Tuesday, November 24 at retail outlets nationwide, New York Yankees Clubhouse Shops and through MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball. The Official “2009 World Series Film” will also screen at 21 locations within the tri-state area on November 23.

Here’s to the first of many for the Joe Girardi Yankees! May Joe have a long, prosperous, HOF coaching career with the Yanks!

  2. ditmars1929

Agreed, Bret! Do PedSox fans get in for free?

  3. betsy

The clips on CNNSI.com are phenomenal – I can not wait until the DVD comes out; if anyone is going, I’m sure we wouldn’t mind a little review!

  4. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

    Chip,

Did you see my responses on the last thread re: why would they trade for Halladay if they didn’t for Santana?

  5. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

    betsy,

In the last thread did you mean that Mattingly in 95?

He wasn’t on the Yanks in 1996. Just missed his ring.

  6. Erin

Very cool. I can’t wait for the DVD to come out.

  7. DonnaL

I got an email last week from mlb.com advertising the event, and bought a ticket for the 7:30 pm showing at the Ziegfield tonight (about $30.00). It’s a general admission ticket, but seems to have a specific seat number.

I’m not sure when I should try to get there to pick up my ticket, because I read somewhere that the evening’s events (and I don’t know what those are, either) actually begin at 6:30.

In any event, I’m very much looking forward to it; it should be lots of fun, and I even brought my 2009 World Champions cap to wear! Is anyone else from LoHud planning to be there?

  8. Erin

Doreen-that’s awesome! I hope you have a great time.

  9. Jon

Any idea whether there will be a Yankees 2009 DVD of a non-WS variety, or perhaps a Yankeeography? The problem with the WS DVDs are that they are playoffs-centric, but this team had such a remarkable and memorable season in so many ways, I feel like there’s much more to the story than simply the World Series.

  10. DonnaL

    I’m not Doreen, I’m Donna!

By the way, I think Betsy must have meant Mattingly in 1986, not 1996.

  11. Bronx Jeers

The Ziegfeld is a great theater.

It’s not the original palace as that was torn down in the 60’s but it’s a good “retro” theater.

    But 30$ to watch highlights?

    My bad-sorry Donna!!

  13. Bret the Hitman

I just finished reading some literature on Josh Johnson and his agent is talking about him earning 18-20 million when he reaches free agency in 2 years. That’s a big chunk of change for somebody 2 years removed from TJ surgery.

  14. champ809

what do you guys feel about Delgado(if healthy) as the DH?

he had a monster 2008 and was off to a hot start to 2009…40hr power good patience and could be had on a 1yr deal

    How’s this lineup look;

    Jeter
    Cano
    Tex
    ARod
    Delgado
    Posada
    Swish
    Melky
    Gardy/AJax

if healthy that’s 40+ hrs from the 3,4,5 spots in the lineup allowing you to play Gardner,Melky amd AJax for speed and defense with power coming from every other spot in your lineup.

    Thoughts?

  15. CR9

    this is too funny.

    it’s peter gammons’ face.

  16. Squidward

“That’s a big chunk of change for somebody 2 years removed from TJ surgery.”

It’ll be 4-5 years once he hits FA though, right?

  17. DonnaL

I definitely have the impression that at least at the first showing tonight, it’s more than highlights, and that Cashman & Girardi — and, no doubt, Sterling and Waldman! — will be speaking before they show the movie.

  18. Squidward

    Champ:

2-7, save Rodriguez, are a big collection of plodders. I really like Damon’s OBP and speed in the #2 hole moreso than an old slow DH. Cano has never shown he can be enough of an OBP guy to hit in a tablesetter spot.

  19. Yanksgal07

I’m going too. It’s $30.00 but only at the Red Carpet viewing at the Zeigfeld because you get the DVD too. I think the rest of the theaters it’s $12.00.

I’m looking forward to it …can’t wait …

    Go Yankees 2009 !!!

  20. Bronx Jeers

Delgado is going to play in Puerto Rico this Winter and go from there.

If he’s healthy, the Mets will probably be at the top of the short list of suitors although an AL team probably makes the most sense at this point.

    Also, Cano batting 2nd?

  21. Jerkface

I don’t think the Yankees trade Jesus Montero for anything less than Felix Hernandez/Hanley Ramirez. That caliber of player, which Josh Johnson and Roy Halladay are not.

Montero is not just a ’special bat’, he is one of the MOST special bats in minor league history. The lines he has put up and the tools he has shown at the age and level he has shown them compare favorably to some of the best young sluggers EVER.

If anyone is UNTOUCHABLE, its Jesus Montero. He is not a ’special bat at no real position’, you find a position for a bat that special and wherever he goes he will end up at the upper end of the spectrum for that position.

    Book it.

  22. DonnaL

I didn’t realize that I’ll be getting the DVD with my ticket — good thing I didn’t already order it online!

PS: I’ll be in seat #860 if anyone wants to say hi to a fellow LoHud person.

  23. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

    champ809,

If you’re going to entertain Delgado, why not just bring back Matsui?

  24. tk

“If anyone is UNTOUCHABLE, its Jesus Montero. He is not a ’special bat at no real position’, you find a position for a bat that special and wherever he goes he will end up at the upper end of the spectrum for that position.”

I agree wholeheartedly you Jerkface. It seems that every discussion about Montero begins with the assumption that he won’t be able to stick at catcher. I’m not too familiar with his defense, but I see no reason a team wouldn’t sacrifice a marginial defensive value for an elite level of offense. So what if he’s not a human computer like Varitek. The point is, Montero has a bat that can play at any position, even if it’s DH. On top of that, there is at least a decent chance he can provide that level of offense from the most offensively challenged position on the field. Given that, it’s a gross mischaracterization to write him off as just some player without a true position.

  25. champ809

    Squidward

Damon’s speed is all but gone…he stole 9 bases last year and he’s only getting slower and older…as far as Cano his obp last year was .352 hitting in the 7 spot with no protection. I’m of the opinion that if you stick him in the 2 hole behind Jeter and in fron of the combo of Tex/ARod/Delgado he’d see a steady diet off fastballs which he murders…he’s actually the best fastball hitter on the team and he is improving his walk rate.
And while it may be true that Tex,Delgado,Posada and Swish offer no speed Melky,Gardner,Ajax and Jeter would provide plenty of speed as well is improved D with Melky/Gardy in LF,Gardy/AJax in Cf and Swish in RF. Delgado would be able to provide insurance/backup to Tex @ 1b and he could probably be had for a 1yr 5mil w/incentives deal. He would kill hitting at the stadium and provide much better protection to ARod in the 5 hole as well as be a good clubhouse guy

  26. Bronx Jeers

“PS: I’ll be in seat #860 if anyone wants to say hi to a fellow LoHud person.”

I don’t think anybody really pays attention to the assigned seating.

It’s a movie. Many people enter and the theater is dark which sort of kills the assigned seating idea.

Where would seat 860 be anyway?

    8th row, seat 60 ?

    86th row, seat 0?

  27. champ809

Delgado is a better bat than Matsui more power better protection for ARod and he also provides insurance for Tex @ 1b

  28. betsy

Mad Prince, I meant 1986….wow, lol. Thanks for pointing that out……man, I worshipped Donnie Baseball.

  29. DonnaL

    860th row, only seat.

  30. Yanksgal07

Right …with the Yankee tour I think they give you a seat number too. Might be something with the system that a seat gets assigned but it did say general admission which means first come first serve.

Donna…have a great time tonight. It should be fun !!!

    Go Yankees 2010 !!!

  31. tk

“I just finished reading some literature on Josh Johnson and his agent is talking about him earning 18-20 million when he reaches free agency in 2 years. That’s a big chunk of change for somebody 2 years removed from TJ surgery.”

If he continues to pitch like he did last year, he’ll probably get paid at that level. However, I would imagine that his agent expected the Marlins to value his free agent years close to that level right now without the benefit of seeing how he performs over his final two arbitration years. If Johnson wants to wait until he hits free agency, he very well could cash in. On the other hand, he will be taking the risk of health/performance issues over the next two years. Which is why so many young players sign away arbitration/free agent years for under market contracts…hitting the free agency jackpot would be nice, but even an under market contract would allow Johnson to be financially secure for the rest of life. That would have to be a really tough decision…a nice problem to have, but still a tough decision.

  32. DonnaL

(on the very rare occasions on which I’ve been to a movie that has designated seating, it’s followed exactly the same way as what happens at a play — there are ushers to show people to their seats, and they may not even let you in after the show begins.)

  33. Phil

Yanks are not gonna spend anything on DH’s.

  34. BigJoe44

I’m not sold on Delgado for DH. He has had too many years where he spent time on the DL. When he is healthy, he is definitely a force offensively, but he seems to be injury prone.
I would prefer to see Matsui come back on a 1-2 year deal. He has been a great RBI guy, hits 20-30 HR’s a year, and hits lefties and righties. His knees are an issue, but he played all last year on them, and other than breaking his wrist, he has stayed away from the DL.

  35. Raymagnetic

    Squidward,

just want you to know that you’re DEAD WRONG about Alomar being better than Jeter in 99. Jeter had an OPS+ of 156 in 99 compared to Alomar’s 143. Jeter also led the league in runs created. Quite simply Jeter was the best player on the planet that year.

  36. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

    champ809,

I have a hard time buying that Delgado is “better” than Matsui.

Perhaps over his career, but Matsui didn’t play his whole career here.

  37. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

And BTW, just because a guy has “more power” doesn’t make him better.

  38. G. Love

Delgado is a sour puss. He makes Sheff seem like Swisher.

Matsui is a great option at DH for one more season. He’s not blocking any younger players or prospects by coming back for another year.

  39. Squidward

“just want you to know that you’re DEAD WRONG about Alomar being better than Jeter in 99. Jeter had an OPS+ of 156 in 99 compared to Alomar’s 143. Jeter also led the league in runs created. Quite simply Jeter was the best player on the planet that year.”

Alomar ran circles around him defensively. It wasn’t close. Alomar was the better all around player. Can’t use run created than discount the 11 runs he gave back.

  40. Pat M.

I keep bringing this up, however if Matsui leaves who hits 5th and prtect Alex, certainly Posada is not an adequate option…..

  41. Chad D

Can’t wait! I’ll be at the 7:30 show. And the seat numbers are just for head count, it will be general admission with certain sections reserved for VIPs.

  42. Jerkface

Matsui is better than almost any option for DH out there because he doesn’t have a platoon split. Thats the one thing that pushes Matsui over the top.

    .300 hitter with RISP
    no platoon split
    power vs left/right

  43. Chip

Yikes, Delgado at DH – no thanks.

I would rather remake the outfield and move Swisher to DH or bring in a solid catcher (either via trade or free agency or non-tenders) and move Jorge to DH.

For example – if Kelly Shoppach is non-tendered (a strong possibility) I would grab him up in a second and let him work as the primary catcher with Jorge getting a few games and Cervelli serving as an emergency back-up.

Yes that means carrying three catchers, but if Jorge is the primary DH that’s fine.

  44. Phil

They’re only spending on LF and P.

  45. Chip

Thats the one thing that pushes Matsui over the top.

and what brings him back to the pack is that when Girardi wants to DH Tex, Jeter, Alex or anyone else Matsui has to go to the bench since he is physically not able to play in the outfield anymore.

  46. Squidward

“just want you to know that you’re DEAD WRONG about Alomar being better than Jeter in 99. Jeter had an OPS+ of 156 in 99 compared to Alomar’s 143. Jeter also led the league in runs created. Quite simply Jeter was the best player on the planet that year.””

One other point, Ray. By your way of measuring things, Jeter was only the best player on the planet if 27 year old Larry W. Jones (MLB leading 165 runs created, 168 OPS+) was playing on a different one.

Point never was that Jeter was somehow inferior. Offensively, he was superb. So was Alomar, and Alomar played superior defense.

  47. BigJoe44

Giving any position player the day off as a DH makes no sense. In a close game, Pena or Cervelli or any other bench player would be pinch hit for by someone off the bench (Jeter, ARod, Tex, or Posada would be the DH in this scenario), and then you have to put someone in the defensive position. If you pull your DH so he can play defensively, you lose your DH for the pitcher.
Have an everyday DH, like Matsui, and give your position players the day off when they need it. They can always come in late in the game to provide extra pop.

  48. Keith

I really hope the DVD included that Venga Bus song they used when the players got their keys to the city ! Still can’t believe they played that crap !

  49. BayArea NYY

Does anyone know if the playoffs are also shown on the WS DVD?

  50. Polish Princess

I was at the 7:30 showing last night & the DVD is fantastic. Everybody had a blast. Joe Girardi, Brian Cashman, Michael Kay, Suzyn Waldman & John Sterling were all there & Joe Girardi & Brian Cashman high-fived us as they were going down the aisle. Someone also brought the WS trophy down the aisle & it was up on the podium while everyone made their speeches. It was as much fun as actually being at a game. The shots of Pedro’s face on the giant screen every time he gave up a run were absolutely priceless. I highly recommend getting the DVD.
