I think Cashman should pass on Damon, put Jackson in CF leave him there to develop ala how they did with Bernie. Split LF between Gardy & Melky. Bring back Matusi as DH, PH (1yr). Resign Pettitte or spend money on #3. Also give that Cuba 1B guy a shot

Drive,

I've raised the issue of their impending Free Agency issues before. boston isn't an old team, but it has older players at key positions, and major impending Free Agency issues.
Not saying that Halladay is old, as certainly he's in his prime, but lots of older players will or should be leaving next season, and there's not much left in the system in terms of replacement.

boston will need a catcher - V-Mart will be permanently at 1B should they not be able to lure Mauer, if that's even possible.

Youk will have to move to 3B.
Ortiz is a declining DH
Vtek is a shell of himself and needs to retire gracefully, if that's still possible.

In fact, now that I think of it, if boston were to go all out in 2010, and get Halladay and Bay, it may give them the cover to move on from their aging stars:

1B/DH Ortiz - 35
3B/DH Lowell - 36
C/DH Vtek - 38
SP Wakefield - 44

(Ages listed are their ages after next season)
Now they may not win it all if our Yankees have anything to say about it, but if it's respectable, their fans will embrace a further youth movement.

PittsburghYankeeFan,

Peter Gammons just rescinded his Thanksgiving invite to you. You obviously don't understand the wonderment that is the Red Sox minor league system that has awarded a total of 7 World Championship rings to home grown players in the last 91 years.

For all the gasbag talk about the Red Sox minor league system, Pedroia, Youkalis,Papelbon, Delcarmen, Ellsbury,Lester and Trot Nixon have ever won a ring as a Red Sox. Youkalis is the sole one to ever receive 2 rings and only because he appeared in 1 game of the '04 ALDS. That's spanning the last 91 years! The 2004 World Series roster had exactly 1 home grown player on it, Trot Nixon. In comparison, the 2009 Yankee postseason rosters were comprised of 12 home grown players, including 2 first ballot Hall of Famers.

Here's a problem with the Red Sox pursuit of Halladay that I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned more often. If Boston gives Halladay an extension of say 5 years at $90mil, they have to at least match that with Beckett next year. Plus, Papelbon is approaching fre agency as well.

The Red Sox are about to face the same dilemma the Yankees have had. If they want to both pursue top end talent and keep their nucleus, it's going to cost them big money. We'll see if the Red Sox put up, but we do know for sure their fans won't ever shut up.

Sox do not have the chips, as much as their media shills would have you believe otherwise.

Casey Kelly? A ball player who can't decide what he wants to be? Please. Hmmm--I guess he's as good as Jesus Montero to some. Lars Anderson? Can he hit in AAA?

Their FA cupboard is bare. Ouch.

Always liked Shelley - not an act if it's genuine. Met him twice in Tampa and Scranton, and could not have possibly gone out of his way more to make my 10 year old son feel special. Flipped him a couple balls and signed what is now his Jerry Hairston jersey :) Very cool guy, and hope he does well.

DaSaint
Beckett is an ace when healthy? Not what Peter Gammons, or as he is better known, PGammo, said. He is already trying to make the case that Beckett has been average in his time with the Red Sox, except for in the 2007 postseason. He is trying to diminish Beckett's value so the Red Sox can pay him less to stay.

Once again, stinksniffing the Red Sox organization any way he can.

P.S. You stole my name StinksnifferPRTS! Damn you! ;)
