Report: Selig stepping down after 2012

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Nov 28, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

According to Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune, baseball commissioner Bud Selig plans to step down at the end of his current contract, which runs through the 2012 season. That deadline is three years away, but as it approaches, the job will become one of the running stories in all of baseball. Selig was involved in some of the most significant changes in the game’s history, as well as some of the games brightest and darkest moments.

By they way, tip of the hat to MLBTradeRumors for pointing the way to Rogers’ story.

Selig will most likely be remembered for his mishandling of the steroids situation, but he did a lot of good as well. I think re-alignment and the wild card have made the game and the playoff system more interesting and fun to watch.

I was wondering when Selig step down, its about time. It was an informative writeup on Eduardo Nunez, I think Ashmore nailed it. ive seen the kid play a lot in Trenton. His only real plus tool is his strong arm; his defense isn’t good and methinks he is overrated.

Bush? The way things are going the current pres. is going to need a job by the time Selig is out ;)

Speaking of Selig, the termination date of the current Basic MLB Agreement is December 11, 2011 – I think. With Bud on the way out and nothing to lose, it’s an interesting time to be negotiating over things like hard slotting and regulating international player markets. Same time, MLBPA’s new head Michael Weiner has already been griping about MLB collusion designed to depress free agent salaries. Does the new MLBPA head have to make his bones, does Selig go out with a bang? Does a continuing poor economy press both sides to be reasonable? Interesting times ahead.

    Dear Uncle Bud,

Please please please don’t go. Without you we’d have to play by the same rules everyone else does. There would be no more exclusive windows to negotiate with and we’ll no longer be able to trade for prime time players without having to give up equal value. Please stay. We love you.

SATURDAY 8:31am: ESPN’s Buster Olney hears that Halladay’s preferred destinations are the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, or Phillies.

Look at how quicly Stinksniffer Boston Olney came out with this update.

Everyone knew the Yankees were not the only team that Roy would accept a deal to, and everyone knows where the Yankees go, the Red Sox are attached to the Yankees jock strap.

But Boston Olney had to make sure to get the news out there.

  27. Matt November 28th, 2009 at 1:35 pm

Finally the spineless Commissioner decides to leave the game but not before fans get to hear 3 more years of how economically sound baseball is.

  28. Mark in Tampa November 28th, 2009 at 1:37 pm

Why would George Bush want to subject himself to more abuse by a biased press? The job of the commish is a thankless task, regardless of what you do. Just like the job he just left.

IMO, Selig was not as bad as he has been made out to be. His public appearances are dreadful, and make him appear clueless. If he was as good around the media as David Stern, he would be much better thought of. He did institute the WC and interleague, which have been good for the game, although interleague is getting tiresome.

I don’t know how he could have handled the steroid issue differently, aside from the Mitchell report. It is widely assumed that Bonds, Sosa, and McGwire did PEDs, but still there are people who insist they did nothing wrong because there was no positive test. Bud couldn’t just go up to players and accuse them of cheating, and the union was the major roadblock to any testing. They even drug their feet after being confronted by congress.

As far as the Mitchell report is concerned, Selig’s biggest mistake.

  29. m November 28th, 2009 at 1:39 pm

lol. So Selig resists overtures from a group of owners asking him to stay. Could it be a group headed by the Florida Marlins?

  30. CR9 (Red Sox farm system = Hydra, except cut off one head and 6 more grow back) November 28th, 2009 at 1:46 pm

    Mark in Tampa
Here’s how he could have handled the steroids issue better. By not hiring a Red Sox organizational member to run the probe. He knew exactly what he was doing when he hired him, and I hope nobody ever forgets the biased info and dishonesty put forth by George Mitchell. But of course, Bud used the garbage about that loser Mitchell helping create peace between countries or some BS like that.

The only peace that George Mitchell ever helped with was the 2 pieces of **** Manny and Ortiz.

Oh, and he very well could have investigated David Ortiz for a possible suspension, especially after Ortiz lied blatantly, rather than investigate ARod, after ARod was the most forthcoming of any other athlete pre-Agassi.

  31. ysatis November 28th, 2009 at 1:49 pm

Selig leaving, music to my ears.He will forever be the Commish that looked the other way during the baseball era.Letting and approving A known roider McGwire work on a baseball team. While never being held accountable for his allege steroid usage is rank.

Hopefully not another NL owner that comes in with bias for the NL,like Selig has done. He’s the reason for Luxury tax,Revenue sharing, and the much hated 5 game division series, that extends baseball to the cold months.

Because of Selig teams that should be sold or moved to areas that will support them,is why they receive corporate welfare to keep their doors open.Their owners pocket the money.

These welfare teams(bottom feeders) should be required to spend a minimum of 70mm,since they receive that ,or more in subsidies from other teams, that are punished for being successful,as well as the 30mm from MLB yearly!!

I’ll believe that he is stepping down when he actually steps down.

  33. Mark in Tampa November 28th, 2009 at 1:54 pm

    CR9,

I acknowledged that the Mitchell report was his biggest mistake, especially insisting on the names coming out when Mitchell himself advised Bud that it would be better w/o the names being public.

Anyway, the horse was out of the barn at that point. I think the main criticism Bud gets for the steroid era is in not taking steps to curtail it before 2003. My view is that the biggest obstacle prior to 2003 was the union. I don’t know what he should have done. Call out McGwire and Sosa during summer ’98? Everybody else, media especially, was fooled too. Many fans thought something was amiss, but again, it was just speculation w/o any real knowledge.

  34. murphydog November 28th, 2009 at 1:58 pm

“See No Evil” would be a wonderful title for a book on Selig.

Bud was a good capitalist – he represents the owners afterall and he was a used car salesman. He did a good job exploiting the economic opportunities within the game, with the help of the MLBPA. Hard to say he did as much for the quality of the product, however.

The re-birth of baseball after the last strike was fueled by steroids and PEDs, with a willful blindness that Selig will increasingly come to be blamed for. The Mitchell Report was nothing but a cynical, dirty trick – a desperate way out for owners and the union. It had the desired effect; it gave everyone a reason to walk away from PEDs once and for all and to stop worrying whether some other player was gaining a competitive advantage through chemistry. It took away the benefit of participating in the “drug culture” in MLB.

The Collusion Cases are another dirty chapter in Selig’s rein, another case of willful blindness that’s hard to swallow.

Still, they haven’t killed the game yet. But they haven’t stopped trying to either.

I was not insulting or disagreeing with you. I was just using your point to rehash George Mitchell and his phoniness and dishonesty and to get my joke in about the only peace he has ever helped.

IMO, though, I dont care that people used steroids. I care that players are treated differently for it, and teams, namely the NYY, are treated differently for it.

All I ever hear is that the Yankees had all these drug users, but IIRC, the only one of the players to “use” with us was Andy and his HGH.

And you never hear anything about the middle of the lineup of that 86 year curse being broken.

Tanyon Sturtze getting pounded during the Varitek attacking Arod game. Why was there no suggestions or inferences made about that. 3 guys pounding Sturtze by the dugout were Ortiz, Kapler, and Nixon. What do they all have in common besides being Red Sox? Varitek attacking ARod for no reason, and then getting praised in the media? Roid Rage, anyone.

I am certainly not going to put myself in the position of being Bud Selig’s advocate! I have no love lost for the guy, I just think he was unfairly maligned for the most part. But, some of it was certainly justified.

Just curious, because I see it a lot, what does IIRC stand for?

  40. pat November 28th, 2009 at 2:10 pm

After 2012 is 3 years and $50 something million dollars paid to him too late.

Selig unfortunately never learned the lesson that when you point a finger at someone else, there are some fingers pointing back at you. He takes credit for the economic growth of the game (some of which he deserves) but none of the blame for the struggles the game has gone through (some of which he deserves).

I was amused recently when an interviewer (I think Costas) asked Selig since he is so encouraging of McGwire returning to baseball to work for the Cards; would he be as encouraging of Bonds managing the Giants or Clemens becoming pitching coach for the Astros.

McGwire for the Hall? Sorry Chjad, stick to the small stuff like the Rule 5 draft. Maybe you need to go back to Scranton for more seasoning.

George Mitchell was compeletely worthless. If law enforcement didn’t give him a crack at Radomski, every other name he had was already exposed.

I guess it’s meaningless since 9 out of 10 players are on HGH and fans don’t care as long as their team wins. The most annoying thjing is Yankee fans cheer A-Rod, which is fine, but then come on here and call Boston the Roid Sox.

Ignore roids if you want but we still have more tainted titles than Boston.

  46. CR9 (Red Sox farm system = Hydra, except cut off one head and 6 more grow back) November 28th, 2009 at 2:23 pm

“seminal book on the Yankees dynasty. Now somehow he is a Boston groupie?”

You conveniently forgot two important words there. I feel the need to add them in for you.

Seminal book on the “END OF” the Yankees Dynasty. And although the Yankees did not win for another 8 years, they still remained a dynasty, making it to the playoffs year after year.

The title of his book showed Boston Olney’s desire for it to be the last night of the Yankees dynasty.

Olney was also the guy who praised Clay Buchholz and Jon lester for their no hitters, but on ESPN earlier this year, he tried to take away from David Cone and David Well’s perfect games.

He said the perfect games were against an inexperienced lineup and a minor league lineup, respectively. This coming from the guy who covered the Yankees during those perfect games.

McGwire and Sosa hitting balls out the park at an unheard of rate, and Selig just stood by.

Roger Maris’s family had to watch THE NIGHT McGwire broke Maris’ record, with the manufactured juice ball McGwire hit, that surpassed Maris’record, and got into the TAINTED baseball books.

Selig thought they saved baseball was and was grateful, and looked the other way!

    Jim

Not sure how you would quantify how we have more tainted titles than them.

Unless you’re a Red Sox fan, LOL.

But there is a difference, which is perfectly acceptable for why Yankees fans can insult the Roid Sox and cheer our own team.

Our players come out and admit their usage, or are attacked for years in the media for denial (whether he is honest with his denial or not).

The Red Sox not only do not admit their cheating ways, the media, namely ESPN, will do anything it can to cover it up and make the Roid Sox out to be the clean sox.

  51. Rich in NJ November 28th, 2009 at 2:27 pm

The question George Mitchell should have had to answer is/was: Why didn’t he talk to Paxton Crawford?

  52. ---.---.---. November 28th, 2009 at 2:31 pm

The reason McGwire has surfaced again,is because he get less than 25% of the votes to get in the HOF and to clean up his image. If he gets in the Hall,so should PETE ROSE ,who never was suspected of roid usage, SHOULD get in too!!

  61. CR9 (Red Sox farm system = Hydra, except cut off one head and 6 more grow back) November 28th, 2009 at 2:47 pm

    Wait
Now we’re getting into semantics. ARod, while he was outed, admitted to what he did. Ortiz boldly lied.

ESPN and every other media outlet, including the Clogfather, bashed ARod for not being forthcoming.

ESPN and most every other media outlet, took the side of Ortiz as if he was telling the truth.

Jokingly, I wonder how Ortiz convinced his irregular heartbeat in 2006 that he did not use steroids!

  62. Wait till we do it all Over Again November 28th, 2009 at 2:49 pm

Neither A-Rod or Ortiz was forthcoming.

Yes A-Rod admitted to juicing and Ortiz didn’t, but there were certainly things he lied about in that press conference. I’m not taking away all blame. Not to mention that we had Giambi on our team when we beat the Sox in 03′. Giambi never admitted to juicing, but he hit 2 HR’s in that game 7.

So what proof is there of the juicers in 04′? We suspect, but who do we know?

We don’t even know if Big Papi was lying.

Just because the Red Sox fans call us cheaters doesn’t make it right for us to do the same. I’m exhonoerating no teams from blame. We ALL cheated. No championship is any less valid than any other.

  78. Betsy - high on pie November 28th, 2009 at 3:07 pm

I never saw Meet the Parents……..

Wait, I do like MLB. Maybe I overstated the case – I wonder if it’s even mostly the anchors on Sportscenter or Baseball Tonight that don’t like the Yankees/favor the Sox.

  79. Betsy - high on pie November 28th, 2009 at 3:09 pm

Forget it – I can’t post thanks to the filter, but suffice to say that Timmy K and Jayson Starks are fair most of the time……and Gammons does respect the Yankees.

It just seems like national sportswriters in general think of the Yanks as big bad bullies while the Sox are like the Cubs – cute underdogs.

Everywhere you look on ESPN, there is another one.

    Commentators also.

I heard an exchange between Dick Vitale and Dan Schulman during last night’s UCONN/Duke Game.

Prior to the exchange, I had heard Schulman was a Red Sox fan on numerous occasions. Yesterday, when Dick made mention of the Yankees winning the WS, Schulman dismissed it repeatedly.

Sean McDonough is another, he used to lead the broadcast team for Friday Night Fenway 5 years ago on ESPN.

Jack Edwards, formerly of ESPN, works for the Bruins, as the Bruins lead stinksniffer.

I could go on all day, but I’ve got to watch UF/FUS in 20 minutes.

  81. Wait till we do it all Over Again November 28th, 2009 at 3:12 pm

Gammons respects the Yanks, but he is SOOO a Sox fan.

“Meet The Parents was bloody and violent?”

Well, there was the pool volleyball incident. :)

    Betsy,

You never saw the Godfather Part II? Whether or not you can deal with violence, part I and II are must see for anybody.

And Timmy K is somewhat fair. Jayson Stark is not. And Stark’s favorite thing to do during chat wraps is to insult Yankees fans for thinking that every player wants to come to them. In my estimation, there are fans from both the Yanks and the Sox that send questions to Stark asking if their team can get Mauer and so on. But Stark only answers the questions sent from the Yankees fans and responds with an attack on Yankees fans in general.

I say in my estimation because I have sent numerous questions identical or very similar to those that he has answered of Yankees fans proposing trades or signings, posing as a Red Sox fan, and he never responds.

  86. dur November 28th, 2009 at 3:18 pm

I FOR ONE,was glad that Alex didn’t get MVP for the WS,or the ALCS.Yankees would still be reading about his failed roid test in 2003,distracting from the WS win.

Plus the sports writers weren’t going to reward the guy they hate.

“Is Jim Pir-One back under an alias?”

    Isn’t it obvious?”

    No, I’m not Jim Pir-One.

I do not throw out insulting names to players who do not get hits against the Red Sox. Or to pitchers who shut down the Yankees.

  88. Wait till we do it all Over Again November 28th, 2009 at 3:21 pm

A-Rod deserved to be co-MVP w/CC in the ALCS. While it would have been annoying to hear about the failed 03′ test, he still deserved it.

  89. Tala08 November 28th, 2009 at 3:23 pm

Please, he didn’t win and we still heard about it.

  90. Betsy - high on pie November 28th, 2009 at 3:24 pm

Mark, I’m not interested in mobsters and that kind of thing. Oddly, the History Channel often airs a special on The Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre (narrated by Paul Sorvino) and I can watch that, even though there are some very bloody scenes (I guess because it’s in black and white). I’ve never seen any of the Godfather movies….

  91. Betsy - high on pie November 28th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

Oh wait, I did see a De Niro movie, Analyze This (but not the sequel)…….Yankee Trader, thanks for the list!

“I’ve never seen any of the Godfather movies….”

Well, IMO The Godfather I and II is/are one of the best films I’ve ever seen. It does romanticize what they were up to, rationalizes it as no different from what corrupt politicians and cops were doing. But the acting and directing (and screenwriting – don’t want to forget how important screenwriting is) were superb.

  94. Betsy - high on pie November 28th, 2009 at 3:47 pm

Murphy, that’s what I’ve heard…I just have a very hard time with movies with any amount of blood. I doubt I could make it through the first hour of either of those movies, lol

  95. Wait till we do it all Over Again November 28th, 2009 at 3:49 pm

I don’t care if you have zero interst in the mob and mafia-you HAVE to watch The Godfather and Godfather II.

Movie to stay away from-Citizen Kane. Supposedly the best movie of all time, but I watched it and was hugely disappointed.

  96. Betsy - high on pie November 28th, 2009 at 3:53 pm

Wait, actually I find Al Capone and the history of his time in Chicago very interesting…..because it’s history.

I saw Citizen Kane years ago,I think when I was in high school. I don’t remember loving it or hating it – it was not a movie I would ever see again, that’s for sure.

  97. Wait till we do it all Over Again November 28th, 2009 at 3:55 pm

The Godfater romanticizes the era of course. The mafia were evil, murderng pigs. But they’re still great, great movies.

  98. Neil November 28th, 2009 at 3:59 pm

Selig vowed that another baseball strike like that of ’94 would never happen again under his watch.
He saw the way of getting back fans and putting rumps in seats through turning a blind eye and being the biggest cheerleader for the McGwire / Sosa onslaught of ’98 which backfired.
In the biggest act of buffoonery, he hired a Director of the Red Sox (George Mitchell) to do a report riddled with holes.
Any credit he takes is unjustified.

  99. GreenBeret7 November 28th, 2009 at 4:01 pm

De Niro was great as ‘Fearless Leader’ in “Rocky and Bullwinkle: The Movie” and as ‘Bruce Pearson’ in “Bang The Drum Slowly”.

  100. Phil November 28th, 2009 at 4:02 pm

Citizen Kane is a great movie.

  101. Betsy - high on pie November 28th, 2009 at 4:04 pm

Wait, the romanticizing doesn’t bother me – when you watch a movie, you generally identify with the main characters (or else, why would I want to spend 2 plus hours with characters I hate?)………the blood does. I just can’t stomach blood. If it means I have to miss a couple of the greatest movies ever made, so be it……

  102. beck November 28th, 2009 at 4:05 pm

Did I hear right Selig’s leaving? Oh happy days!

  103. Wait till we do it all Over Again November 28th, 2009 at 4:05 pm

I know lots of people absolutely worship Citizen Kane, but I hated it. Damn depressing, and I knew rosebud was on the sled from the beginning.

  104. Wait till we do it all Over Again November 28th, 2009 at 4:06 pm

    Suit yourself, Betsy.

Just thought I’d mention, the Godfather movies don’t have as much blood as people think.

  105. Betsy - high on pie November 28th, 2009 at 4:07 pm

There’s GB again, touting Rocky and Bullwinkle. I may have to rent that movie just to say I saw another DeNiro movie – I imagine there isn’t too much blood in that one.

Phil, I may have been too young to appreciate Citizen Kane……I didn’t really get it at the time. I do remember that Agnes Moorehead from Bewitched was in the movie, lol.

One of my favorite movies of all time is the Miracle Worker…….

  106. GreenBeret7 November 28th, 2009 at 4:09 pm

“Citizen Kane” was Orson Welles at his best…both acting and directing. It was, in fact, history. It was the life of William Randolph Hearst, or, at least 75% of it was pulled from Hearst’s life. About 20% of the movie was Welles’ life.

  107. G. Love November 28th, 2009 at 4:10 pm

Godfather I and II are the best movies ever made. It takes some people a long time to be able to sit down and take them both in, but when they do they are blown away.

I know a lot of people who said, “yeah I watched some of it, it was boring” who only later see the whole epic and are floored.

Those films are less about the mafia and more about the American dream and the dynamics of family. Yeah, it’s wrapped in a nice seductive gangster package, but there are deeper meanings within those 2 films that make them timeless and great.

The only equivalent story telling wise I’ve seen to those two films was the entire series of Hbo’s The Wire and Mad Men on AMC. Lost is also epic but in it’s early days it had some filler episodes that didn’t exactly advance the overall story.

The Godfather I and II, The Wire and Mad Men do not have one wasted moment in them. It’s like watching a novel. Brilliant stuff.

  108. Wait till we do it all Over Again November 28th, 2009 at 4:15 pm

Totally unrelated-I’m watching the Chambliss HR game on Yankee classics. Gotta love that right after Brett ties the game, the Yankee pitcher (don’t even know who it is) throws over Mayberry’s head the very next pitch and nobody bats an eyelash.

  109. Betsy - high on pie November 28th, 2009 at 4:15 pm

GB, yep – I remembered that. Maybe one day I will rent it again – there’s lots of free time during the off-season.

GLove, I wish I had the stomach for violence because I probably would love the Godfather movies. Oh well, lol – not much I can do. I’m not even saying the violence is gratuitous – I’m sure all of it is in service to the storyline.

  110. Betsy - high on pie November 28th, 2009 at 4:16 pm

I loved Lost early on……..I dropped it a few years ago when I realized that I cared more about certain characters than the show did. That show became all about Kate (gross, I hate her), Jack and Sawyer.

  111. Geo November 28th, 2009 at 4:18 pm

anyone think this has to do with the world ending in 2012?

  112. G. Love November 28th, 2009 at 4:19 pm

    Betsy,

Lost is worth picking up again. Benjamin Linus, Daniel Farraday and Desmond themed episodes are brilliant. There’s been some great Locke, Sayid and Sun centered episodes the past few seasons as well.

  113. Betsy - high on pie November 28th, 2009 at 4:25 pm

GLove, it’s hard because I become attached to characters. I loved Charlie and Claire – they dropped EmilieI De Raven like a hot potato, basically. I’m sad that I had to drop Lost because until I became disillusionedm, I adored it. The pilot was phenomenal – one of the best tv shows I’ve ever seen (episodes, that is). Maybe only the finale of the Fugitive topped it. I may consider buying the DVDs if the last season sounds ok…………One actor I just love from that show is Terry o’Quinn – he’s brilliant (before that he was known for being the original Stepfather, lol). I also thought Michael Emerson was brilliant………..

  114. Betsy - high on pie November 28th, 2009 at 4:25 pm

If the world ends in 2012, it’s only because it will be the 100th anniversary of the opening of Fenway Park

I’m trying to think of other Charles Grodin movies I’ve seen, but I can’t think of any. What is Midnight Run about ? Is it a comedy? I don’t like the premise of the original Heartbreak Kid, so I wouldn’t see that – the character sounds like a jerk.

Just kidding…you did make me laugh.

  121. austinmac November 28th, 2009 at 5:01 pm

Betsy, I’m not sure if anyone told you the Midnight Run plotline. DeNiro is a bounty hunter taking Grodin back to the authorities to testify against the mob and the mob is trying to stop his return and get back the money Grodin stole from them. The best part of the movie is the relationship between DeNiro as his usual tough self and Grodin with his dry, dry persona.
