Wang does his little turn on the catwalk

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Nov 30, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The deadline for the teams to tender contracts to players is Dec. 12, which means that Chien-Ming Wang’s tenure with the Yankees may well have only days remaining. The last person I spoke with about Wang indicated that the Yankees are still discussing their options – and remember, Brian Cashman does love to have pitching depth – but are leaning towards letting Wang go. Obviously there is still time before a final call has to be made.

(Yes, the deadline for offering arbitration is Dec. 1 and we’ll have a post on that later on today. This doesn’t apply to Wang — only to free agents like Johnny Damon, Xavier Nady and Andy Pettitte.)

Anyway, Wang is back in Taiwan and – thanks to our loyal reader Grace – we know that he recently attended a charity event benefiting schools that were damaged by a recent typhoon. The best part? The event was in a fashion show format!

Yes, Wang did the catwalk. And the red carpet.

Personally, I think he looks great. The scarf, in particular, is a nice touch.

letting that guy go would end up being one of the dumbest moves in the history of this organization.

  2. Carl November 30th, 2009 at 1:17 pm

Just looked at the pics on Yahoo. Great job by Wang. I really hope he comes back.

  3. jrock16 November 30th, 2009 at 1:17 pm

Why not bring back Wang? He was an above-average starter until last season and there are at least a couple open spots in the Yankee rotation. I don’t see where they can find a better option in free agency.

  4. Erin November 30th, 2009 at 1:18 pm

Those are great pictures. Wang is looking good!

I really hope they can work something out with him.

  5. schuyler November 30th, 2009 at 1:19 pm

It’s quite unbelievable that Wang walked down a catwalk without tearing his Lisfranc ligament.

    Congratulations, Wang.

  6. DaSaint007 November 30th, 2009 at 1:24 pm

    Schuyler,

Equally unbelievable was waving him in to score from 2B in an NL game. Glad he’s semmingly recovered. I hope they offer him an incentive-based or even a minor league contract. He could be ready mid-season. Why not, we’ve offered more to lesser pitchers.

Tiger gets his wife a ‘Kobe Special.’

Now we can all rest assured that he did indeed cheat on his beautiful wife with some skank …

You know, not that its any of OUR business or anything but yeah.

  8. rbj November 30th, 2009 at 1:30 pm

I’d hate to see Wang go. Most likely the rotation will be CC, A.J., Andy, Joba & Hughes?, but who knows when one of them will come down with an injury. Plus wouldn’t Joba & Phil be on innings limits, especially Phil.

miL deal with a chance to come back up to the big club.

  9. DaSaint007 November 30th, 2009 at 1:32 pm

    Kobe Special?
Bogus. You don’t make the money he makes and then go to Zales to buy a ring. Stupid. Just stupid these claims and reports.

  10. JoeyA November 30th, 2009 at 1:36 pm

There must be something seriously wrong with Wang if they really won’t tender him a contract, even if it’s an incentive-based deal.

I hope we get more insight once the decision is made.

  11. ADam November 30th, 2009 at 1:39 pm

I think the Wanger is done in Pinstripes. Best case scenario is that he his back before the break. However, in the last few years how well has his rehab ever gone?

It’s very sad, but he always seems to hurt himself more when he tries to recover…

  12. Chip November 30th, 2009 at 1:41 pm

I agree with Sam that Wang’s probably done here.

I know his agent has been saying that CM is going to be ready by April but my take on that is that it’s a load of BS. Wang had major surgery that takes between 12 – 18 months to recover from and he’s going to do it in 9? My guess is that the agent is trying to dangle a little glimmer out there so that the Yankees bite and offer him arbitration.

Also, this is not Wang’s first major shoulder problem. He’s now had three shoulder surgeries (two in the minors). The Yankees have seen this coming, it’s why they never made an attempt to sign him to a long term deal like they did with Cano.

I thought the best case scenario would be that some team approached the Yankees about CM in a case of swapping one arbitration player for another – just to throw out a name as an example – if the Mets thought they needed pitching more than an OF they could trade the Yankees Francouer for Wang etc…

Short of that – I don’t see any reason that the Yankees wouldn’t non-tender him and then try to re-sign him to a minor league deal down the line if no one else picks him up.

In the end, I think the market is about to be flooded with some talented guys from the non-tenders:

    Garret Atkins
    Kelly Shoppach
    Ryan Church
    Tony Pena Jr.
    Scott Hairston
    John Buck
    Dioneer Navarro
    Brandon League
    Connor Jackson
    Dan Uggla
    Josh Willingham
    Ryan Garko
    Jonathan Sanchez

    Here’s the complete list:

In arbitration you can’t make an incentive based deal.

anybody watch the HOF concert last night?

  17. Chip November 30th, 2009 at 1:45 pm

Another interesting potential non-tender is Joel Zumaya. If Detroit is really serious about cutting payroll then I can’t see them offering him a contract.

I’m sure there will be a market for him but I couldn’t begin to guess what it will be given his injury history. Seems like the kind of guy that Cash or Theo would gamble on though.

  18. HenryfromDC November 30th, 2009 at 1:46 pm

Wang came through the Yankee farm system, paid his dues, never complained and gave two 19-win seasons. He even stayed for the playoffs to cheer on his teammates. I hope the Yankees give him a chance to come back, even if it ends up being a minor league deal. The guy deserves it.

Btw, when do pitchers and catchers report?

Knicks, Rangers and Giants not helping me get thru the offseason…

  19. m November 30th, 2009 at 1:49 pm

Zales? See! Tiger is cheap. His frame of reference is Zales.

  20. MikeBoston November 30th, 2009 at 1:51 pm

My feeling is that NYY owe CMW at least a 1 year deal…I don’t see how they could allow him to not only enter but leave spring training with atrophy in his freaking hips! Granted he might not have followed the rehab they told him to do, but from everything I read they told him to rest until Spring 09. Someone really dropped the ball on his rehab and my guess is it was the NYY and not CMW. Before he was injured he was certainly better than “an above average pitcher”. I won’t go as far as calling him a true #1 like CC, but #2 sure, no hesitation on that IMO.

  21. DT - OPPC member November 30th, 2009 at 1:54 pm

    Where is Randy L!

Looking at the picture, there is obviously something wrong with Wang’s catwalk delivery. Notice how his right hand is lower than his left! He is not following through.

On the Red Carpet he raises his right hand. No noticeable problem. Only when he gets on the catwalk does he have an issue.

It’s probably not something that he is doing in his catwalk side sessions, but he’s carrying it over into the fashion show.

It’s all Cashman’s fault of course! And the catwalk coach is not blameless either.

  22. jennifer November 30th, 2009 at 1:56 pm

He just needs Alex’s hat to go with that outfit. :-)

  23. m November 30th, 2009 at 1:56 pm

The way the Yankees burn money on payroll, I would be disappointed if the Yankees did not reach out to Wang with some kind of offer, incentive-laden or not.

  24. austinmac November 30th, 2009 at 1:59 pm

Why not bring back Wang? Well, no one knows if he can pitch next year. Signing him to an incentive laden contract would be okay, but the Yankees cannot pay him $5M in hope he can effectively pitch. Nothing is owed to him. He did get well paid for his small contribution last year.

  25. Chip November 30th, 2009 at 2:03 pm

I get that there’s a lot of emotion in fans but listen to yourselves.

The Yankees owe Wang a deal? Really? Wang made a pretty nice chunk of change last season and based on the rules of arbitration he can’t make less than 40% of what he made last year – so that means you want the Yankees to just hand someone – who may not pitch for them this year – at least $3 million? Granted, that might seem like chump change to the Yankees but I think it’s more than a bit naive to think it’s going to happen.

As I said, the Yankees will non-tender Wang and then offer him a minor league deal to both cut some payroll and also clear a spot off the 40 man roster.

  26. Jerkface November 30th, 2009 at 2:03 pm

Wang showed he could get groundballs and weak contact when he came out of the bullpen. It was most likely a SSS issue, as it did not translate back into starting, but the promise was there.

I’d sign him, put him on the 60 day DL to begin the season and wait to see if he was really back, then unleash him as the first backup starter.

  27. m November 30th, 2009 at 2:05 pm

Whew, Chip. I’m glad that Wang will remain with the organization. :?

  28. thenextandykosco November 30th, 2009 at 2:09 pm

    Sam,

Are you sure that the deadline for offering arbitration to free agents like Nady, Damon, Matsui, Pettitte, Molina, Hairston, and Hinske is tonight at midnight? Doug Miller, in a post of today on mlb.com, and every other source I have been reading for months indicate that the deadline is 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, December 1. That would seem to be tomorrow night.

  29. Chip November 30th, 2009 at 2:10 pm

    M -

I never said he would remain with the organization. I said I’m sure that’s what the Yankees would like to do. Wang’s going to be a free agent and if someone makes him a better offer then he’ll go.

The Twins have a similar decision to make on Francisco Liriano.

  30. Chip November 30th, 2009 at 2:12 pm

Are you sure that the deadline for offering arbitration to free agents like Nady, Damon, Matsui, Pettitte, Molina, Hairston, and Hinske is tonight at midnight?

Different types of arbitration. The arbitration deadline that Sam is talking about is for players who do not have the service time to be free agents.

  31. m November 30th, 2009 at 2:14 pm

    Chip,

But. But. You said…”As I said, the Yankees will non-tender Wang and then offer him a minor league deal to both cut some payroll and also clear a spot off the 40 man roster.”

Sounded like you’re an insider. ;)

The St Louis Cardinals want Xavier Nady,if Holliday turns their offer down.
Damon is buying the Boras crazy talk,if he goes so be it.If he really expects the Yankees to offer a 36 yr old OF(with bad calves) a 4 yr contract,he’s delusional.

HBO Rock and Roll HOF Concert is on again on HBO tonight from 8:00-12:10. I still need to look up the original artists in the two day concert that lasted some 12 hours to see who was edited, but the TV special was fantastic!!

  34. Stateman52 November 30th, 2009 at 2:17 pm

Hopefully Wang is brought back to the Yankees. Cashman loves bargains and perhaps Wang can be brought back cheaply.

  35. DaSaint007 November 30th, 2009 at 2:21 pm

Money is always an issue, granted, but I’d like to hope that Wang gets a deal to stay in pinstripes, or at least in the system. Many of us here (including myself) are ready to give incentive laden deals to other reclamation projects such as Ben Sheets.

We’ve done it for Tommy John, Jon Lieber and Sergio Mitre to name just three. Paid them, in fact, while they were recovering.

Now if his shoulder is shot, then of course you can’t. But if we’re into taking risks, I’d rather take the risk I know over the risk I don’t.

  36. Chip November 30th, 2009 at 2:21 pm

Actually there are a few guys I would think will be non-tendered and would love for the Yanks to get:

    Ryan Church
    Scott Hairston
    Brandon League
    Dan Uggla
    Brandon McCarthy (minor league deal)
    Frankie Liriano (minor league deal)

And also some guys very unlikely to be non-tendered that would be great additions:

    Angel Pagan
    Dustin McGowen
    Clint Barmes

and of course the – no way does this guy get non-tendered group
    Zach Duke
    Josh Hamilton
    CJ Wilson

I’m not even gonna mention Danks, King Felix, or Linc – all of whom are up for big arbitration raises.

  37. Chip November 30th, 2009 at 2:23 pm

Don’t have to be a Yankee insider to conclude that’s what the Yankees will do. Would have to be Creskin though to know if Wang will accept such an offer.

    Chip-

Thanks for posting the arbitration eligible list: Knowing that the Yankees might need a LF, Starter, DH, backuup catcher and all-purpose utility player, there are some possibilities of these being non tendered IMO who could help the Yankees:

Luke Scott DH/LF lefty with power and hits lefties well.
    Francisco Liriano-Lefty starter
    Conor Jackson-OF
    Jonny Gomes-OF
    Ronny Paulino-C
    Jeff keppinger-Utility
    Josh Willingham DH/LF

Just a few of many who “might” be granted FA.

  44. PittsburghYankeeFan November 30th, 2009 at 2:37 pm

You have to bring back Wang now, just to have Mariano fine him for the catwalk posing.

Every start will have a picture from the fashion show on TV. He is going to get razzed non-stop, no matter where he ends up.

All for a good cause, however–Wang should be praised for the sacrifice that he made.

Love Brandon McCarthy. He went to the minors and they really reworked him. He does seem to be rather fragile, but he’s said to be in the best shape of his career.

BTW, Brandon McCarthy looks even more like a young Anthony Perkins than Scott Niedermayer did, back in the day.

  47. PittsburghYankeeFan November 30th, 2009 at 2:40 pm

Count me in the minority that says Wang is done. In arb, he can get $4 million (20% less than $5 million, per the CBA rules).

I would then turn around before arb and offer an incentivized contract with a mutual option for 2011 based on targets for IP and wins. Maybe $2 million base with escalators.

Yankees raised him. He fits their groundball pitcher needs. Low risk, very high reward–imagine if he goes 8-2 over the last three months of 2010?

  48. gfd November 30th, 2009 at 2:40 pm

Are you seriously talking trash with your Spurs? If so, they’ll be the first 8 seed to win it. Colts? Perfect regular season isn’t worth a cent. The real football season hasn’t even started yet. We’ll see how the Colts do in the playoffs now that they can’t pipe in crowd noise when they’re on defense. And even Dungy said that was not passer’s interference.

    Squid -

I really think the Marlins do non-tender Uggla. They want to free up 2b to play Coghlin or Bonefacio and put the other in LF.

No teams have been willing to make a deal for Uggla because
    a)he’s a butcher at 2nd
    b)strikes out too much
c)they know he’s going to be nontendered.

If I was the Yankees and he does become available I grab him in a second and hope he can play LF – if not he’s my DH.

    Dasaint -

Absolutely I would put Ryan Church in RF in this park. And, while I don’t see him as a starter, Scott Hairston can provide some power off the bench and play all three OF spots as well as a little infield.

  60. m November 30th, 2009 at 2:59 pm

Ryan Church is over 30 and garbage. He is a starting player for a money conscious team or lower market team. He isn’t a right fielder for the yankees, maybe a 4th or 5th OFer. Doesn’t hit for a high enough average to justify his lack of power / patience.

  64. Chip November 30th, 2009 at 3:04 pm

    Trader -

I’m a big fan of picking up Connor Jackson if he’s made available.

I don’t think the Nats will cut Josh Willingham – they’ll try to deal him between now and his hearing though. With Austin Kearns, Nick Johnson and Lastings Milledge all off the team they can actually find a place for Willingham to play.

I would take Shoppach or Paulino as a back-up catcher (or John Buck for that matter)

And I think that the Reds find a way to keep Gomes, he played very well for them last year.

Keppinger isn’t a bad player (I’m still rooting for Clint Barmes though)

And – because it’s Houston and their owner hates spending money – I’ll be interested to see if they shock the league by non-tendering Hunter Pence (I highly doubt it though)

    Jerkface -

Church has battled injuries but he gets on base at about a .350 clip and has been playing in very pitcher friendly parks, with his swing in Yankee Stadium I think he could go from a 12-15 HR guy to at least a 20-25 guy.

His left vs. right splits aren’t awful – he just reminds me a lot of Paulie – a guy who just needs to get a shot to play every day and see what he can do. When Washington did that a couple of years ago he responded. He was off to a great start with the Mets and then got a concussion and the Mets mishandled it and then this last year he was in Jerry Manuel’s doghouse and didn’t really get on track.

The Yankees have to non-tender Wang. You can’t pay him 4-5 million next season and keep him on the 40 man after his 2nd shoulder surgery.

If it’s meant to be, he’ll sign a low cost incentive laden minor league deal to come back here and rehab and hopefully prove he can come back from this.

This isn’t TJ surgery which most players come back from after a year or so. This is shoulder surgery which could very well drop his velocity enough ticks to make him not effective as a starting pitcher any longer.

His power sinker at 94 got people out.

And 89mph sinker might not be as effective.

He’s a wild card at this point and betting a roster spot and 5 million on him would seem silly and sentimental.

That said, I’m all for bringing him back and giving him another shot here. I’m just not counting on him to be the pitcher he was 2+ years ago.

    I know you’re not.

Last few games KG looks like his legs are back under him.

    It’ll be interesting.

    Erin-

They could have deleted Ozzy Osbourne, who was pretty crude, and whacked out of his mind.

Agreed. I took a little break right after Ozzy came out. I could only take so much. LOL

  74. Chip November 30th, 2009 at 3:16 pm

Ozzie was just awful in that. Lou Reed wasn’t very good either.

    Chip-

Clint Barnes was second to Tulowitski in homers for the Rockies. Doubt he’ll be sent packing.

Hunter Pence-No way. he’d be the second most valuable outfield FA behind Holliday and ahead of Bay. If the Astros need to free up money maybe they’ll look to trade Carlos Lee.

S.o.S.: a Colts-Saints Super Bowl would be great. Saints would go up 45-10 in the first half, then it would be a race against time for Peyton to come back.

Wait a second, the Saints have some huge comebacks too… they can’t BOTH come back to win.

You hate Melky enough to bring up Uggla and his 220 average?

    WHat’s his OBP?

That guy has wrecked one too many fantasy teams for my liking.

He always has a two month period where he hits his obligatory 24+ HRs and 70 RBI’s then he just kills you for the remaining 350 AB’s.

    Settle down now.

Pence would not be in front of Bay.

“He’s younger and steals bases blah blah blah” he’s not better than Bay IMHo

Some fantastic guitar players, led by Jeff Beck and Tom Morello.

Ten yrs ago Ozzie closed Ozzfest after Tool and blew the place apart.

I being a crazed Tool fan had planned on leaving early after they ended but Ozzie to my surprise killed it.

    Great show

GOd that was a long time ago.

  81. Yankee Trader November 30th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

Pence is a mute point as he will not be non tendered. If he was, however he’d be a more cost effective and better defensive outfielder than Bay.

  82. StinksnifferPTRS November 30th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

    Hah

Jeff Beck and Tom Morello in the same sentence!!

Dan Uggla has never batted .220. He is like Swisher but gets on base less and hits for less power overall. This makes him about as valuable as swisher because he can play a position where that kind of offense doesn’t exist. He can’t play it all that well, but you can put him there.

He also only has 3 months where he OPS’s under .800, which is .750 in April, .765 in Sept, and .744 in July for his career. Which doesn’t really jive with your off the cuff remark about his streakiness.

    Off the cuff?

Have you ever owned the guy in a fantasy league?

If you have those stats may feel a little hollow is all I’m saying

if you’re playing a fantasy league thats stats at the end of the season, then Uggla is going to help you win categories like runs, rbis, and HRs at a position where most people are trying to win SB / Avg / Hits(or whatever)

i guess a guy like Uggla might hurt you if its head to head, but any player in baseball could hurt you head to head unless its a guy like Pujols who is going to OPS over 1.000 every month

    Hope he didn’t re-Lisfranc himself.
