“Does not create any extra pressure. It shows his leadership. I also think Joe would rather take the pressure off of his team’s back and put it on his own. Shows even more what a leader he truly is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
—————————————
oh he’s definitely a leader. Girardi is my boyy. Just don’t like the changing number thing.
I am getting ready for a rather huge snowstorm here in the northeast, but it’s all good because of this Granderson trade. I still say that Damon for a 2 year deal, believe it or not, I think Lackey makes more sense to me now. Then either Phil or Joba for 5th and then maybe Soriano. Here’s hoping Halladay doesn’t end up in Boston.
I’m happy overall with today’s trade. I’ll continue to watch IPK and wish him well, and hope he fulfills his potential, and the same with A-Jax. Never liked Coke anyway. I’m a Pepsi man.
Don’t care who has what number, just want to resolve the starting pitching situation and bullpen now, then DH.
I don’t see Girardi wearing 27 or 28 as anything but somewhat of a slogan for YES to use. Kind of like Maddon did with his spewing for the Rays, before the “Elvis look”.
Wearing 17 didn’t exactly help Girardi out in his first year as manager. Getting the right pieces for the team along with good management went a lot further toward getting 27 than it being his number.
Besides, if Girardi leads them to 10 championships, what number would you retire? All of them? (Skipping the already retired.)
Soriano did accept arbitration, but has already given permission to the team to be traded. I think it was about getting rid of the draft picks for him that he accepted. (Along with getting a decent enough deal for a year).
Bret– Come on, who are you kidding? We all know Joba’s in the pen by July. The pen’s fine anyway. You want them to bring in a arm….tell them to bring in a #5 starter (hopefully named Wang).
Is there any logical reason that you have been bashing a guy who played above average defense in RF and put up a 129 OPS+ last season (Swisher) or did he spurn you for an autograph one day and you are holding some strange grudge?
If Joba isn’t moved – and I surely hope that does not come to pass – I fully expect him to live out his limitless innings in the starting rotation.
I also expect good things from Joba The Starter.
We have plenty of BP arms, and I also believe that if Brackman can remain healthy and continue to repeat his delivery and throw strikes, Brackman will be a big arm in our BP late in the season.
And good news pending on Christian Garcia come March – that would be a huge BP boost. The Yankees are stacked with BP alternatives to Joba Chamberlain.
Melancon and Dunn? Where’s the icky smiley? Melancon hasn’t proven anything and Dunn did even worse than he did. I don’t know why Cash cared so much about keeping him when the guy can’t hit the side of a barn….
““I don’t think it affects what I can still do. Either they come out and pursue me or they don’t,” Damon told The Post from Orlando, where he just landed after returning from Barcelona. “I still know how to play baseball and will make any team better.”
*****
Seems rather defensive – as if he’s taken offense to the Yankees making the deal. I mean, why even say what he said? Did anyone imply that he can’t help a team? ”
He also said “I’m still shocked that Detroit would trade him. He’s a pretty good player and that makes New York better for the next couple of years,” Damon said. “[Hitting coach] Kevin Long will get a hold of him and improve his on-base [skills] and cut down on the strikeouts.”
Damon added, “He’s a good player with some decent pop and good tools. He’ll be around certain players and coaches who will get him to the next level.”
Doesn’t sound like he’s offended by the Yankees making the trade. It’s hard to say if he’s being defensive without knowing the context of the question he was asked.
“Melancon and Dunn? Where’s the icky smiley? Melancon hasn’t proven anything and Dunn did even worse than he did. I don’t know why Cash cared so much about keeping him when the guy can’t hit the side of a barn”
—————————————-
(sigh)
Soriano was offered arbitration, the Braves added Wagner and Saito before they knew he would accept. He has given his waiver for the Braves to do a trade, which really just swaps draft pick for prospect.
I don’t really see much difference except that the prospect might be better for the Braves (there is more of an idea of how good that player is professionally).

=======================
Betsy, the Yankees aren’t making judgments on their young arms based solely on each’s cup of coffee intro to the majors.
We’ve already discussed Melancon, you and I, but I have seen several of your comments expressing bewilderment on why the Yankees value Dunn so.
It’s pretty elementary – he can throw the ball 97 mph and is a LHP. Also has a nasty slider. His command needs work, but he’s got a great arm – what is there to not understand?
no. 27, Damon also said something about loving NY. Damon probably would love to be back, but he is looking out for his own interests. I can’t blame him for that. He isn’t burning any bridges with the Yankees by those statements, and it depends on his price tag if he comes back or not.
I wouldn’t boo Damon for going elsewhere. He was great for the Yankees and helped them this year.

Comment on the Granderson trade, bodhi?
=====
Howdy, Nick.
I think this is a case of the player being great for the park. Granderson is already a good CF – his abilities will be further flattered by our park defensively and offensively.
I am sad to see Jackson go, but as someone else has observed, we have a good deal of emerging toolsy OFers – at least a handful who can play CF (Kelvin Duran, anyone?) – who probably eclipse AJax offensively.
Bodh, I could have worded it better, but people are nuts to be counting on Melancon and Dunn to solidify our pen. I’m not saying they won’t, but they can not be counted on at this point. It’s easy to say that Dunn just has to fix his command – you can say that about many pitchers. If it were so easy to fix, they would fix it…….I hope he can harness is stuff and command, but if he can’t, he won’t be very successful.
Nick in SF……As soon as I heard that CC Sabathia won the Warren Spahn Award once again, I immediately though of you and you preaching this last winter….
Great move by C Money getting Grandy, he really is a great fit for the park & the team. He was blogging for ESPN during the season, really great personality.
“Part of that interview was on last night. Apparently they timed one of his fastballs against a car and calulated he threw it 104 MPH”
————————————
blake: I know. I dammm near fell down laughing, when Plesaac commented, if that would have been Mitch Williams (instead of Feller) throwing the pitch, then the person on the motorcycle had better have a helmet on. Mitch would have probably ended up hitting him in the back of the neck/head
bodhi, I’m very happy with it. Hurts a little to lose IPK (really) and more to lose AJax after reading about him for so long and waiting for him to finally get to the Bronx.
But neither one would probably have a big impact in 2010 and Granderson sure should. He’s almost a True Yankee already!

But Betsy, I was more responding to your being nonplussed that Cash values him as much as he does.
And my point is, you have to misunderstand basic established values put on lefties who can that hard – they aren’t abundant.
While control and command can be elusive, and yes, just throwing hard does not guarantee a career – you certainly can’t teach a pitcher to throw 97.
It’s the same reason the Yanks would sign Chapman – big lefty power pitcher who can hit triple digits – sign him and throw him in the Nardi factory and hope he figures it out.

His assets aside, he certainly does seem to fit the “quality individual” mandate as well.
Maybe I’m in the minority, but, I think this trade sucks! A-Jax will soon be a 5 tool MLB player, Granderson’s numbers are on the decline, and other than his 30 HR’s, he did nothing to make him worth this trade. Ian Kennedy, good bye, will not miss you. I was hoping the Yanks would get Matt Holliday for LF, A-Jax in CF, and Melky and Swisher platoon in RF, hot man plays. Gardner as back-up etc. Then put a deal together for Doc Halliday, such as, Joba, Phil Coke, aand a couple of AAA players. That would give you a much improved OF, speed and defense. That line-up wins 105-110 games, and repeats!
I’ve never get why managers wear numbers in the first place. I can see it if they’re a Player/Manager but they haven’t had that in decades (and even then it should only be allowed to that specific person).
Our intention is clear.
Great call.

That leads me to my question of:
What are we going to do with the pick?
Maybe a reliever. We kept Jose Veras for a while. We can find any number of men that can be better relievers than Jose Veras.
Another thing I like about Holliday is he would kill the Green Monster with his quick compact righty swing.
Well, Curtis cannot wear 28 with us.
I thought Girardi was going to take 28.
@yankskiddd – He should continue to lead off. Look at their respective OBPs.
He can take 29. So we’re covered for the next two years.
let Granderson (aka triple machine) have #28
the entire #28 number thing tied to Girardi is lame anyway
Why is that lame. The guy has a goal in mind, and he wears his goal on his back. If it were any other team, the media would call that leadership.
So Curtis Granderson is our new CF.
Awesome.
I agree, I hate Girardi changing his # to 28. Lame.
Curtis keeps his number (28). Joe Girardi keeps his (27).
well now that we see what # he wore last season, the trade gets my approval, LOL!!!
number 28 coming to the Bronx. There ya go, it’s in the bag.
“Why is that lame. The guy has a goal in mind, and he wears his goal on his back. If it were any other team, the media would call that leadership”
I call it needless pressure. As if he doesn’t have enough already

Regarding the numbers thing. I can only hope and pray that it becomes a problem when Girardi wants #32.
