A check-up on A-Rod’s hip (and heart?)

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Dec 14, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

While the hot stove continues to churn and the Yankees – like all teams – work on adding players from outside their organization, they are also keeping tabs on players already on the roster to be sure that everyone is getting (and staying) healthy.

Along those lines, Alex Rordriguez has returned to Vail, Colo., where his surgically-repaired right hip was examined, according to sources. The sources said the examination was “routine” and that Rodriguez is fine – he recently was at David Ortiz’s charity golf tournament in the Dominican Republic. That said, it’s worth knowing that Rodriguez will have to continue to monitor the hip as his career continues.

Remember, it was originally believed that Rodriguez would need two surgeries to correct the problem in his hip but a few months ago his doctor, Marc Philippon, revealed that A-Rod had recovered so well that the second procedure likely wouldn’t be needed.

Now, as for Rodriguez’s heart? We’re not much for the gossip pages here at the LoHud Yankees Blog, but I was tipped off to this story and thought it was worth posting, if only because we all know how important Kate was to A-Rod being “in a good place” during his amazing October.

I know, I know – I thought they’d be together forever, too.

The Yankees have ignored Matsui/Cameron/Damon for a reason. It’s not tough to figure out.

  7. Betsy -high on pie December 14th, 2009 at 6:14 pm

    Don’t care – it’s Alex’s personal life, not my business. I’m sure he’ll be fine in 2010

You know, there are not a lot of good non-FA LF’s out there:

    The ones I like:
    1. Ryan Braun – Brewers
    2. Carl Crawford – Rays
    3. David DeJesus – KC
    4. Carlos Gonzalez – Rockies

    1. Not happening. Young and cheap.
    2. Extension for big bucks this year, or FA next year.
    3. Ask Chip.
    4. Young and productive. Promising.

Then there’s Holliday and Bay. Followed by Cameron.
    That’s all folks.

Carig is hearing that Matsui to the Angels is a done deal.

  10. DaSaint007 December 14th, 2009 at 6:16 pm

    Ok, Delmon Young – Twins.
    Other than that? Any ideas?

Soyanara Matsui. Wish you all the best, except when you face the Yankees.

Very sad day. I hate to see Matsui go.

  14. Betsy -high on pie December 14th, 2009 at 6:19 pm

ESPN’s Jayson Stark heard this deal is close but not done. He says Halladay’s extension would be just three years and $60MM (starting in 2011), with possible vesting options for another year or two.

Well, Matsui wanted to play LF – what can you do?

  15. Phil December 14th, 2009 at 6:20 pm

I’m glad Matsui was able to get a ring with the Yanks. Moose and Giamgi weren’t as fortunate.

  16. Bret the Hitman December 14th, 2009 at 6:20 pm

Halladay’s payday is right up there with CC’s in terms of annual dollars spent.

But we been there done that.

  17. no.27 December 14th, 2009 at 6:21 pm

    Corey,

“How? People complained about this teams RISP numbers in 2009. You want Granderson, Cano, Swisher, Cameron in the same lineup with clunky Matsui, Posada & Teixeira on the base paths? Yeah…no.”

Did you just complain about a possible lineup with Granderson, Cano, Swisher, Cameron, Matsui, Posada, and Teixeira? Do you watch baseball? Everyone on that lineup would have an OPS over .800. It would be the best offense in baseball BY FAR. The starting lineup with hit 240 home runs without trying.

And, in 2009, the Yankees were 3rd in the league in OPS w/ RISP.

  18. Erin December 14th, 2009 at 6:22 pm

Phil, me too. That was a nice way to cap off his Yankee career. Matsui has always been one of my favorites. I wish him luck as an Angel (except when they’re playing the Yankees)

  20. MR. OCTOBER December 14th, 2009 at 6:23 pm

I have been reading that the Chi Sox are looking for a leadoff guy that can improve their outfield defense, a lefty power bat, and pen help. How about a trade involving Brett Gardner and Juan Miranda for Carlos Quentin. Quentin, Granderson, Swisher with Melky and possibly Hoffman coming off the bench. Quentin is still young 28 in august, above average d, potential all star and under team control but going to want a pay raise. Sign Matsui 1year 5 million to DH (hopefully Matsui to the Angels is not a done deal). If Grandersons woes continue against lefties slide Cabrera into center. Yanks keep all of their pitching prospects for a deal if they feel they need another starter.
    Jeter
    Cano/Granderson
    Tex
    Arod
    Matsui
    Quentin
    Posada
    Swisher
    Granderson/Cano

  21. DaSaint007 December 14th, 2009 at 6:26 pm

    Um, Mr. October,

    Matsui signed with the Angels.
Granderson is not going to be platooned in CF.
Brett Gardner hasn’t proven he can get on base enough to be a leadoff hitter.
Juan Miranda hasn’t proven as yet that he can consistently hit ML pitching, though he is promising.

CWS will not therefore trade Quentin for that package. Kenny Williams is one of the brightest GMs in the game.

I just don’t understand what you people expected.

Did you expect the Yankees to sign Lackey or are you just upset the Sox got him?

Did you expect a Halladay trade? I sure didn’t.

In that same respect, how many of you really think they’re going to sign Holliday? I don’t.

    And guess what?

They’ll still be a great team.

    Have some faith.

Except for Betsy. There is really truly no hope for her.

  24. DaSaint007 December 14th, 2009 at 6:28 pm

Phil, I’m curious, other than Damon and Holliday, who would you want for LF and why?

  25. miggs -GTLU Reigning Champion December 14th, 2009 at 6:29 pm

The move that hurts is Matsui.

Why not offer him 8 million and have his bat in the middle of that lineup for one more year? That move baffles me. Why let him go for so cheap?

  26. vinny-b December 14th, 2009 at 6:29 pm

    ———————————–

Because the FO does not want to let Matsui play the field, and the Angels apparently made a commitment to let him do so.

Lastly, if there is a market that is a buyer’s market, it’s for DH.

  31. raymagnetic December 14th, 2009 at 6:31 pm

    Miggs,

I agree with everything you said except for the sign Holliday part.

I do think that Cashman has been eying Holliday and he’d be a perfect fit in the lineup.

It also accomplishes the goal of the team getting younger and more athletic (cost not withstanding).

At this point the Yankees still have money to spend and not many good options to spend it on. I could definitely see them signing Holliday, and (hopefully) bringing back Wang or one of the other injured pitchers and taking it from there.

Let’s hope Kate wasnt seeing Tiger on the sly after having met Tiger at a party at Derek Jeter’s pad.LOL I shuddered when I read that Tiger met one on his conquests at a party at DJ’s Trump Tower apartment. I prayed that Derek stays out of the muck.

Seriously though, with someone as sensitive as A Rod is, who knows how a breakup with his sweety just before Christmas will impact his psyche.

I completely agree. Everyone should be happy Halladay is out of the AL East. Lackey will be an upgrade for the Sox, but not enough to put them past the Yankees.

Seeing Matsui leave for such a small amount seems like a mistake though. Cashman is too hung up on the idea of a rotating DH to adjust to the market. Maybe he swoops in last minute, because I’m sure Matsui would come here if the money is the same.

Something tells me that Matsui wants to play the field, and the Yankees will not commit to that and hurt his defense, and that is more of a reason why he’s leaving. The money is something the Yankees can match if they wanted to, and easily. So there must be something more than that.

Losing Matsui and the vacancy that he leaves relly is a big hole right now…..And Jorge Posada is not the answer….So now there’s a glaring hole in the outfield & the DH and the oh so important 5 spot covering Alex……Actually ( as been stated often here ) Matt Holliday fills both holes at less money than Damon & Matsui…In fact it’s a push when you factor in Curtis

    ————————————————————
That having been said, don’t you think that he’s still in control of the market?

It’s interesting that most of us thought that the Yankees drove the market this offseason, and only when the Ynkees made a move would the market be defined. What’s happening is the opposite. The Yankees have not made the move, and moves are being made around them, but the resulting ‘leftovers’ – Bay and Holliday, and to a lesser extent Damon, are going to be able to drive the market still as there are fewer options available and the same need in LF.

There are 4 teams that need LF help: Angels, Seattle, boston, and Yankees.

There are 3 premier names out there: Holliday, Bay, and Damon.

Someone could be left standing when the music stops.

  49. miggs -GTLU Reigning Champion December 14th, 2009 at 6:40 pm

Raymagnetic I don’t think they want another huge contract on the books. I really don’t.

That’s why its so baffling to see them let Matsui go. Ok he wants to play the field. Big deal. He also really loves NY and I thought he wanted to stay here. Offer him 8 million and tell him he’s going to DH.

If they resigned Matsui and with the Granderson trade that eliminates the need for Damon, who will cost more than Matsui. They could have gotten by with Melky in LF if they had Matsui and Granderson in the lineup. Now if Damon doesn’t resign then maybe they have to consider Holliday, a more expensive, longer term contract with IMO more risk.

Holliday scares me. Bad stats in the AL last year, never played in a pressure cooker, he just seems like he’s going to be a disaster if they sign him.

I’d almost rather have Dye for a year. Or Cameron.

  50. Phil December 14th, 2009 at 6:40 pm

I’m with those who are perplexed at this Matsui deal. Unless he’s just blinded by pride or saving face about playing the field, I think he would stay with the Yanks as a DH if they matched or slightly exceeded the Angels’ offer. I also agree that Cashman’s idea of rotating players through the DH spot is not a good plan. When A-Rod and his hip need a day off, that means a day off – not hitting four times a game, running the bases, sliding, etc. He’s more liable to re-injure his hip on the basepaths then in the field.

Remaining LF’ers: Holliday, Bay, and Damon

LF needs: Mets, Yankees, Angels, Mariners. Boston appears to be gone if they sign Cameron.

  83. champ809 December 14th, 2009 at 6:55 pm

The Plan Cash has is simple he’s not spending 6-8mil on a DH rather he will reallocate those funds to a real area of need…

I get the feeling that the Cameron signing makes Ellsbury expendable…I’m seeing a Bucholtz,Ellsbury,Bard,Lars Anderson package for Gonzo with Ryan Kalish replacing Ellsbury when Cameron ages past his due date….hmmmm!

  84. miggs -GTLU Reigning Champion December 14th, 2009 at 6:55 pm

I posted something similar to this in the last thread but it bears repeating.

For all those that consider the Sox such a model organization chew on this for a second. Have you ever heard of a team eating so much salary in such a short period of time?

In the last 12 months they have traded Lugo (eating about 9 million in salary), released Penny (eating about 2-3 million) released Smoltz (eating 2-3 million) and now they are trying to trade Lowell (and eat another 9 million).

Imagine if the Yankees did that? You people would be howling for Cashman’s head.

Penny and Smoltz were supposed to be “low risk” moves. They both got shelled and released mid-season with a combined 5 miilion left on their contracts. They gave Lowell too long of a contract and now will have to eat that. They ate Lugo’s last year.

They also have Drew (bad contract) and Papi (enough said) that they can’t get rid of. They cleaned out their system for Victor Martinez. They got swept in the 1st round of the playoffs.

They still don’t have a good defensive catcher. Their minor league system is depleted. Hardly a model franchise if you ask me.

  85. MTU December 14th, 2009 at 6:55 pm

What a day ! And just think there is more of it come in the days ahead.

I might get flamed for saying this but the Sox improved themselves today.Maybe not offensively but defensively thru a deeper starting rotation. They still have issues but may not be done adding to their team. And their offense isn’t exactly terrible as it stands. They score lot’s of runs. We might score more but they are not that much weaker in this area than we are. Let’s not all be Homers here and just give them Their due. I wouldn’t take them too lightly or underestimate them. Same with the Rays.

We have lost a couple of big bats this off season(so far), and have added a great new center fielder who makes up some of the missing production. If we wish to attain the production we had last year then a significant piece or two is still missing and waiting to be filled. If not, then we must find another way to success. Perhaps, thru improved defense which is of course the sum of our Pitching efficiency and our player’s defensive skills. Speed might add runs as well and we may dain an advantage there.

We need to employ one or both of those strategies IMO. I hope Cash uses both. If we Added Holliday/Sheets
for example the budget is going to have to top 200Mil. Figuring roughly 10Mill for Sheets, and approx. 20 Mill for Holliday. I wonder if cashman can go there ?

One thing I feel certain of is that we NEED another quality starter for depth. It can be Sheets, Duke, or somebody else but there is considerable risk in standing pat on this front.

I apologize for the length of this post but a ton has happened today. all of it interesting. All of it challenging.

  86. tk December 14th, 2009 at 6:55 pm

“LF: Ells CF: Cameron RF: Drew

That is a sick defensive outfield”

Yep…Personally, the rumored signings of Matsui/Cameron bother me more than the acquisitions of Lackey/Halladay. It seems completely illogical to watch some of the most appealing offensive options go off the market while waiting on Damon and his absurd demands. As such, my hope is that Cashman senses the possibility of signing Matt Holliday at a reasonable rate, and is actually saving his remaining funds for that upgrade.

  89. blake December 14th, 2009 at 6:56 pm

Bret, if they sign another starter then Hughes or Joba (probably Joba) will go to the pen and that should help.

  90. MR. OCTOBER December 14th, 2009 at 6:56 pm

The Yankees have been linked to Cameron for years now. It seems as if for the past seven years or so Cameron to the Yanks always comes up. If it hasnt happened already its not going to happen now! They didnt bite on him then and they surely wont bite on an older version now.

  91. Drive 4-5 December 14th, 2009 at 6:57 pm

Mike Cameron turns 37 on January 8. The Red $ox will have bought themselves 3 players so far this offseason. The average age is 34 years old. I love it!!

  92. Patrick the Prospect Hugger December 14th, 2009 at 6:58 pm

I still want the Yankees to sign Cameron and Johnson =/

  93. Pokey December 14th, 2009 at 6:58 pm

Boston has been wetting their underoos for a long time over Gonzalez though. They need a reliable big stick in the middle of that lineup, and with only 2 years left on his deal and a big extension looming, they may decide the prospects are better than expanding their payroll.

Of course, this also reinforces Boston’s delusion that V-Mart is an everyday catcher.

  94. Alan December 14th, 2009 at 7:00 pm

    Just ask Cashman.

  96. Drive 4-5 December 14th, 2009 at 7:02 pm

JD Drew just turned 34 too. The problem is, he has the body of a 40 year old. The last time we saw 43 year old Tim Wakefield, he couldnt walk without assistance. Mike Lowell is a physical wreck. Theres some age issues in Beantown

  97. PittsburghYankeeFan December 14th, 2009 at 7:05 pm

Relax and chill out. The Angels clearly are in a bad place right now. That is good.

Sure, the Sox improved, but there was no way the Yankees were signing Lackey to 5 x 17.5, and he hates the Yankees anyway. Let the Sox go after Adrian Gonzalez, and have nothing left in the farm, since Hoyer knows who’s who and won’t accept nothing but total farm annihilation.

Roy Halliday would have been a good fit, but he preferred the Phils from day 1, it appears. Didn’t want the “pressure of NY.” Thank our lucky stars he realized this now, and not after Yankees traded Joba and Montero.

Matsui? In the warm weather his knees will feel better. Good for him. The RF porch is a lot longer in the big A than in YS–expect a fewer HR. Sayonara, and Domo arigato.

I’m surprised the Yankees didn’t make a stronger play for Lee, given what the apparent return is. Maybe that was the undisclosed part of the deal between the Jays and Phils, that Lee couldn’t go to the AL East.

Yankees will still field a 95-100 win team without making another move. It’s good to have some competition in Boston.

Now the ONE thing I can’t stomach, however, is how Cash let Kate Hudson go! Cash, you should have offered her more years! Oh well…

  98. Pokey December 14th, 2009 at 7:05 pm

  100. Johnny D. December 14th, 2009 at 7:06 pm

Hmm… Halladay in Philly. But they don’t have Lee anymore… What’s the point?

  101. Pokey December 14th, 2009 at 7:09 pm

Let’s also not forget KW “freed up cash” by taking Alex Rios’ albatross of a contract from Toronto.

  102. Comet December 14th, 2009 at 7:10 pm

Cashman had a plan to get younger. I really doubt that Matsui was in that plan or that Damon is. Perhaps the leak about the budget cut was true and this is the team we go with next year year.

I don’t understand letting Wang go, Matsui go and doing nothing. I do think that FA market that was somewhat moribund last year, has lots of life this year.

If we sign Sheets and Holliday it will again cost big dollars and we’ll still not have a DH. You can’t rotate the line up through the spot because that means always playing with someone who isn’t good enough to play every day. Any ideas on the plan. I don’t see it myself.

    C

  103. Abdababdaserser December 14th, 2009 at 7:10 pm

Its been a tough couple of days for Yankee fans. While the players leaving might not be ideal, I’ve enjoyed watching them for these years.

Wang, Matsui, possibly Damon, three very solid contributors to the Yankees through the seasons. When Wang was pitching well you had a lot of confidence that the game could be won. Godzilla could mash the ball. Damon could be a demon with the battling he did at the plate.

I think the rotating DH is about the poorest thought out idea that has been floated by Cashman. He has gotten the team younger in general. The older guys will need some time off, but not 25 or more games as DH. Its ill conceived and will be a weakness in the way the lineup is put together if he goes through with it.

The Phillies really puzzle me. If they were so hot to get Halladay, why wouldn’t they have done it last season and gotten two years of time out him for the players given up? I think this comes back to be a problem for them, they didn’t make a major gain with this move.

Lackey – eh. Despite the slurp fest from ESPN this isn’t a major plus for the RS. Other than it hurting the Angels as that team has been hit really hard by all this action.

Of all the things to occur today, I am most upset over Matsui. I think he is under-rated and I don’t think this is a good move for him or for the Yankees.

The Angels are already planning on the money that Matsui can bring in to the team. His contract pays for itself and then some. It would more than cover the luxury tax fee and salary if he were to be with the Yankees. So you get a great bat for a net cost of profit. Yeah, I can see why Cashman would ignore that. Brilliant.

  104. yankee21 December 14th, 2009 at 7:10 pm

    Pitt,

Tough to lose Matsui and his spot in the lineup. Mostly though I just enjoyed having Matsui on the team- he was a real positive.

I do not believe in the roving DH and I do not have faith in Posada, Swisher or Cano taking his place as protection for Arod. Hopefully Cash has some plans that are in place that will soon be revealed.

The other moves, Lee, Halladay and Lackey, no big deal. Anyone who knew BOS situation had to figure they would make a splash or two, notice there was very little in the press about BOS interest in Lackey.

I still think BOS signs Holliday next. They need the bat.

  105. tex's friend December 14th, 2009 at 7:11 pm

Dear CASHMAN: Great job man, love how you really got involved and got one of Lackey and Halladay! NOT

Just because you had a good offseason last year doesn’t mean you can slack…way to go on letting two pitchers slide, and one of them going to the Sox, really nice work!

Now, it also allows the Sox to keep their prospects to trade for Adrian Gonzalez too if they want! would have been MUCH happier if you just spent the extra prospect and Got Halladay OVER Granderson

For all those that think the Yankees are going to sign Sheets, think again. They will not pay $11-12 million/year. Unfortunately I see the Angels signing him to make up for their loss of Lackey. Perhaps the top 1-2 punch in MLB belongs to the Mariners, with Hernandez and Lee

  114. PittsburghYankeeFan December 14th, 2009 at 7:15 pm

So Boston offered $15.5 to Chapman. If the Yankees want him, they’ll offer $16. This isn’t Japan with the bizarre closed bidding posting.

  115. DaSaint007 December 14th, 2009 at 7:15 pm

    Speaking of the CWS…

Let me be Chip for a minute here.

The Chicago White Sox are probably not going to be in contention for the next couple years, I wonder if it’s possible that they trade either Jake Peavy and the $48 million coming to him between 2010-2012, or Mark Buehrle, and the $45 million he has coming to him over the same period?

Chances are no, they wouldn’t trade either to the Yankees, and the Yankees wouldn’t want the contracts, as long as Lee and Beckett and Webb in fact hit next years Free Agency.

Plus, Joba and Hughes are going to improve. Right?

    Just thinking out loud.

Toronto GM if he didn’t obtain Drabek, Brown or Gutierrez in this deal, plus supposedly paid 2/3rds of Halladay’s 2010 contract will have quite a few empty seats next year.

Wouldn’t be surprised that Lee will test FA waters, and possible be trade bait in July if Seattle not playing up to par. Their lineup even with Figgins is not very good power-wise.

If the Yankees had offered Lackey the same deal, my guess is he didn’t like NY and would have gone to Boston anyway, to fit in with some of their other jerks!!

LF FA options boil down to Holliday, Bay, Byrd right now as healthy options.

All the talk about Halladay wanting to be near his Florida home was just posturing and gibberish. His home is in the middle of where the Phiilies train in Clearwater and Steinbrenner Field in Tampa.
The Yankees visit the Rays 9 times during the season and the nearest Halladay gets to his home as a Phiilie is Miami when they play the Marlins.
    Who was he kidding ?

Cashman may have some kind of plan, but not all plans are good ones.

Pitt, I guess you’re right – Halladay didn’t want to deal with NY. However, the fans in Philly are brutal…..not that it matters; he’ll be so great, they won’t ever have the chance to boo him.

Our pitching is not very good and our options in LF are shrinking. It appears that Cashman’s idea to sit back and wait has backfired.

One thing we all need to keep in mind with the Cashman plan is that winning the WS wasn’t realistic this past season until they called an audible and snagged Tex. He’s going to continue to make hard choices about getting younger and having flexibility in the lineup and in the field.

  178. Betsy - high on pie December 14th, 2009 at 7:39 pm

IF YOU WANT DAMON IN THE 2 SLOT, BRING HIM BACK FOR 1-2 YEARS AS DH, AND EMERGENCY LF, AND GO STRONG AFTER MATT HOLLIDAY FOR LF. WE NEED AT LEAST 1 MORE BAT, AND A FRONT LINE PITCHER. 198. Doreen December 14th, 2009 at 7:50 pm

    miggs -

I agree with 95% of what you’ve been saying. But as far as the Yankees signing Matsui – if the deal-breaker is playing left field, there is no amount of money that the Yankees could pay him that he’d accept, because the Yankees (smartly, I think) do not see him in the field any longer.

I also don’t understand how he fits with the Angels, because they’re such a 1st-to-3rd type of offense and Matsui just doesn’t go there, you know? I guess they’re hoping he hits a homerun every time up so he won’t clog the basepaths. It’s also risky – if he aggravates the knees playing defense, you lose his considerable offensive threat.

  199. Pokey December 14th, 2009 at 7:50 pm

Not saying anything positive or negative about Byrd, just throwing the name out there for feedback.

So being injured was a good thing – he’ll be really fresh! Let’s hope that those 339.2 innings were a high point in his durability…

  202. MTU December 14th, 2009 at 7:51 pm

    Blake-
I believe they are receiving 6 minor league prospects (might be 5). Brown/Taylor are potential studs – AAA level. I think Brown is rated higher. Think Austin jackson +. Five tool types of guys. At least Brown is. taylor has a lot of power projection. I just looked up Aumont and he is a very big guy. Doesn’t seem to have reached the higher levels of the minors. D’arnaud , the catcher, is still at the lower levels of the minors as well. If brandon morrow was included that would make the haul quite good. Ido not know the outfield prospect. the players involved still appears to be in flux.
If they Got brown and morrow for instance those two allone would make the deal worthwhile under the circumstances.

  203. Rich in NJ December 14th, 2009 at 7:52 pm

yes joba & hughes can pitch great & miranda might replace matsui’s production but until it happens i am not convinced

our pen & offense got weaker & granderson barely replaces damon

    my main concern is pitching

we have the prospects to get a good pitcher & cash has to work his magic

I know you like to worry but, Amy team that has CC, AJ, Andy, Mo, Hughes, Joba, etc is FAR from “not being very good”.

It’s December 14. The roster isn’t finished yet and, despite the whining of dumb 10 year olds on here, Cashman actually knows what he is doing.

Betsy if you honestly think Cashman’s plan was to just sit back and wait and then make his decisions miggs may be right about you. Cashman has probably had this whole offseason planned out for months. The freaking guy started the Granderson’s talks during the WS.

If what transpired today surprised him in anyway shape or form he needs to get checked for a brain tumor, which I highly doubt is the case. And by highly doubt, I mean 100% not the case.

  209. Kevin (not that Kevin) Brown December 14th, 2009 at 7:54 pm

Doreen is right in that watching Matsui run last year was painful so in theory he’s an odd fit for the Angels – that is, until you remember that they are used to Vlad Gurrero clogging up the basepaths for the last 4-5 years, and he makes Matsui look like Usain Bolt.

  210. lets go yankees (formerly lets go twins) December 14th, 2009 at 7:54 pm

Is Pete Abe serious with that comment?

  211. jaake December 14th, 2009 at 7:54 pm

Jeez… just yesterday everybody seemed very happy with the way cashman has been handling things, pulling off the trade for grandy and then taking his time to let the market shuffle out a little bit before making any rash moves. Now all of a sudden Lackey, who we probably weren’t targeting anyway, is a Sock. Halladay, one of the best pitchers in the AL, is now in the NL. And Matsui is going to the angels… it would have been nice to bring him back, but it’s pretty easy to put together an argument as to why not to. Now all of a sudden Cashman is having an awful offseason? First off I’m pretty sure the offseasons not over yet, and thus the yankees aren’t done making moves yet. Second, it’s not like the yankees made real pushes to get any of those three guys, so whatever plan cash has probably isn’t being affected.
Lets all take a step back and relax, the yankees are no better or worse off today than they were yesterday. It’s not like cashman packaged jeter and a-rod to baltimore for Ty Wiggington… no need to panic
I think cashman is being smart by not shortsightedly pulling the trigger on lackey, and any day that halladay leaves the AL east for the NL is a good day.

  212. Pokey December 14th, 2009 at 7:55 pm

The Angels already have Hunter, Abreu and Rivera, not to mention they still have Gary Matthews Jr. on their hands.

SJ, CC is great. I love AJ – he’s fine. Andy? I personally don’t think he’s going to be as good as he was in the 2nd half this year. Joba? I have to be honest – I have zero clue what to expect from him. Phil? You know I love him, but to me (assuming he’s a starter), this is a year for him to have growing pains.

I see Beckett, Lester, Lackey and Bucholz. Now, Bucholz isn’t great, but he’s very talented and he now has last year under his belt as far as experience.

I guess we’ll see……..If some people (not you) think I’m whining, well too bad. This is just how I see it. There aren’t a whole lot of promising pitching options (as you’ve said, you don’t think Cash is going to go into the season with 2 kids in the rotation)……and what’s up with LF? Cameron is about to give the Sox an amazing OF…….I’m just glad this is happening on one day, lol

there has been alot of speculation about who might be involved but no hard facts. i guess we wont know anything for sure until at least tomorrow. until then we only know who the principals are and have to wait for the dirty details which will in the long run determine how each team made out.

    i don’t wan’t to hear it

    i just gave my opinion

it does not mean i am panicking or i am 10 years old

if you for one second think cashman is not concerned about lackey going to the rs & him feeling some pressure to get another pitcher because of it you are wrong imo.

Let’s go, I guess you’re another one I can ignore. I don’t plan on even trying to have a conversation with someone who thinks Miggs is right about me. If you don’t like my posts, sorry. If you want to get personal, I’m not doing that. It’s bad enough I have to deal with that POS you you referenced on this board. I’m a nice person – I try (I hope I am successful most of the time) not to be rude to anyone and I have had it up to HERE with Miggs. If you’re of his ilk, I’ve no interest in dealing with you and if you can’t understand why after reading his posts about me, then I’m sorry.

I see Beckett, Lester, Lackey and Bucholz. Now, Bucholz isn’t great, but he’s very talented and he now has last year under his belt as far as experience.
    *******************************************************
Joba is very talented and he has a yr and half of starting experience under his belt and prior to the stupid 2 and 3 innings starts he had pitched to a era of 3.13 as a starter almost 2 runs better than Bucholtz!
I mean why do you do that…you think every guy that you don’t have is better than the guys you have in your dugout.
Amazing! anybody that feels going into the season better about Bucholtz than Joba based on actual performance on the field should just watch another sport because you clearly have no idea what your watching when you look at baseball.

  232. Y's Guy December 14th, 2009 at 8:10 pm

i think joba and hughes as #4/5 stack up pretty well, there arent any teams with cy young and walter johnson at 4/5. if they find someone who upgrades or just helps with depth, great welcome to ny. if not, i’d go to war with those guys in the back of the rotation.

  233. SJ44 December 14th, 2009 at 8:13 pm

He’s not worried about John Lackey. He would have been worried if they got Roy Halladay.

    Betsy,

if the Yankees weren’t interested in Chapman, they wouldn’t be at his workout tomorrow.

Why don’t some of the panic stricken wait until the roster is filled out? It’s still a work in progress and there is 2 months until the start of ST.

unless joba, hughes step up we do not have enough pitching

if joba & hughes struggle & one pitcher gets hurt we are in trouble

i am not comfortable with our starting pitching
    ******************************************************
every team has those same concerns and there is no insurance or that.

If Halladay gets hurt and Hamels and Blanton struggle the phils are in trouble

If Lackey gets hurt and Beckett and Bucholtz struggle the Sux are in trouble

I mean what does that actually mean? what Gm has contingency plans for 3/5ths of their rotation struggling or hurt?

    ———————————————————–

let me clear it up for you

cashman & girrardi have said on several occasions that they are not comfortable with the starting pitching

i can guarantee that both are not happy with going with hughes & joba as starters & with the debth of our starting rotation

if we signed lackey or traded for josh johnson you would be very happy

that would give us 4 rock solid starters & we only gamble on the 5th rotation spot instead of the 4th & 5th spot in addition we strengthen the pen at the same time

imo another solid starter is absolutely needed for a few reasons

  235. Kevin (not that Kevin) Brown December 14th, 2009 at 8:20 pm

Just wondering: wouldn’t both Joba and Hughes be on innings restrictions as starters next season? Hughes has never pitched a full season as a starter, correct? Nor has Joba, right?

  236. Y's Guy December 14th, 2009 at 8:25 pm

joba will have no restrictions, phil would, thats why he would have to be the #5

  237. Pokey December 14th, 2009 at 8:25 pm

Reports are that there will not be an innings limit on Joba, but there will be on Phil.

  238. Horace Clarke December 14th, 2009 at 8:33 pm

I don’t beleve Joba will be on a strict innings limitation after the innings he logged inthis year. They are probably looking at 180 innings or so, which as a 4th or 5th is about the norm. Hughes is a different issue. he only threw something like 90+ innings, so based on the 30 innings increase per year they did with Joba, he’d be looking at 120 innings.

  239. braeden December 14th, 2009 at 8:33 pm

Lackey is insurance for a possible Beckett walk if he doesn’t get the contract he wants next year. Bard is replacement for Papelbon in the same instance, even Pete mentions this fact.

  240. Horace Clarke December 14th, 2009 at 8:36 pm

i think the 5yr deal for Lackey is way out of line for Boy genius Theo. i dont recall him giving anyone over 4 yrs. what was dice K’s deal?

  241. champ809 December 14th, 2009 at 8:38 pm

Josh Johnson is rock solid because the Marlins went through the growing pains with him and let him pitch…just like we need to do with Joba….we don’t need to spend 90mil to get good starting pitching as Joba and Hughes have more “talent” than Lackey it’s the coaches (Girardi/Eiland) jobs to earn their paychecks and DEVELOP the young talent that we have not just suggest them up for trades for established guys so that there’s no work involved.

  242. Y's Guy December 14th, 2009 at 8:40 pm

the yankees use a players highest season to date (minors included) to determine the rate they are going up from. phil pitched 149 innings in 2006 so he should have a limit around 180 innings. girardi and eiland both said that joba would have no innings limit next season

  243. Pokey December 14th, 2009 at 8:44 pm

    Bard, aka Kyle Farnsworth Jr.?

  244. champ809 December 14th, 2009 at 8:47 pm

and Hughes actually last year threw about 115 innings including his starts in the Minors so he’ll probably be good for 160-170 innings ideally next year..

Lackey is insurance for a possible Beckett walk if he doesn’t get the contract he wants next year.
    ====================================
ridiculous. you don’t sign someone for $18 mill a year as insurance. once you sink that much money, you’ll be unable to find budget space for a $22 million Beckett. In other words, Lackey is the end of Beckett as a Sox.

  246. Ham Fighters thank you Hideki and good luck! December 14th, 2009 at 9:00 pm

cd rosenthall reported this am that the sox are negotiating an extention with beckett

  247. vey December 14th, 2009 at 9:12 pm

Felix Hernandez and Cliff Lee on the same team. the Wildcard might not automatically come from the AL East anymore.

Phillies got an older player with no postseason experience.

Blue Jays wanted the moon from the Yankees, for Halladay, and like the twins settled for prospects. Sickening!

  248. braeden December 14th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

    CD
tell Pete he posted it on his blog. Beckett will want a big payday, just repeated his words.

  249. Boogie Down- Hot Stove December 15th, 2009 at 2:12 am

I hate to see Matsui go, but no one knows more about how those knees are holding up better than the Yankees.

I’m glad to see the Sawx sinking money into aging players that aren’t going to put them over the top. Once Beckett leaves, the dismantling will be complete, and the Sawx can spend the rest of the century choking on our dust.

  250. carl December 16th, 2009 at 11:38 am

I’m not the gossiping kind either; but it’s MIGHTY strange that when the anonymous article appears over the web that Kate Hudson and Alex Rodriguez dating was a publicity stunt to avoid steroid talk and her slumping career (I posted it on Friday or Saturday on the blog) they mysteriously breaks up. What do you know? Scare of jounalist really doing an investigating job uh A-Rod/A-Freud.
