Another manic Monday?

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Dec 21, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

That’s right, the headline is a Bangles reference. I’m not proud of it.

Last week, I woke up on Monday morning expecting a day more or less like any other. I needed to stop by the office and the bank, but otherwise I was just checking around for news. There was little reason to expect anything out of the ordinary.

Then there was some chatter about John Lackey taking a physical in Boston. Then a rumor about Roy Halladay and his agent being camped out in a Philadelphia hotel. Then Hideki Matsui was on his way to Los Angeles.

There’s a solid chance the Nick Johnson signing will become official, but it’s going to be tough for this Monday to rival last Monday. One of the top three free agents on the market signed a five-year deal, the World Series MVP signed a one-year deal and arguably the best pitcher in baseball was traded.

Unless Matt Holliday is involved, it’s going to be tough for this day to compare with that day.

Based on the Post article saying Cash is on to a starter by New Years, today will be a quiet Yanbkee day.

Hope the Yanks have a happy Holliday. ;)

Yankee day that is. Heres to hoping the Holliday rumors start so the media can have a frenzy with headlines by Wednesday or Thursday.

  4. @ngerman December 21st, 2009 at 9:29 am

How about this: Yankees sign Nick Johnson (a lefty DH signing) … Yankees trade for Carlos Zambrano (talented pitcher changing teams) … Mets finally sign Jason Bay (big ticket free agent signing).

Think of it as a Prince reference. Either way, no need to feel unproud.

    Bangles? You ok Chad?

  9. lets go yankees December 21st, 2009 at 9:34 am

No. Your mixing projections systems that have different methods and scales.
It’s difficult to compare those estimates from RLYB to fangraphs – most notably because fangraphs relies only on UZR data for defensive value while SG models defense using both zone rating and UZR. Also, the estimates for pitching will be different due to the fact that fangraphs only uses FIP and RLYB uses ERA (and ERA is in IMO the much more valid way of calculating WAR for pitchers…).

    (repost)

    CB,

I did not realize they are using different scales.
I apologize for jumping the gun on that as my argument does not really make any sense given that fact.

  14. Rich in NJ December 21st, 2009 at 9:37 am

Melky may only be 25, but the fact that his ISO D peaked at 21 (.080) is a potential red flag. It was the patience shown at an early age that signaled that he had real potential as a hitter. That it went the other way tends to indicate the opposite.

  15. Nick in SF at PHL December 21st, 2009 at 9:38 am

  16. MTU December 21st, 2009 at 9:39 am

    Repost

    Good morning one and all.

Before I went to bed last night I did four things which I thought might give me the answers to some of our more perplexing questions:

    1) I consulted my weejee board

    2) I re-read my book on Nostradamus

    3) I entered all data into my rube goldberg machine and looked at the results

    4) I made a quick trip to the Oracle at Delphi

And below is what I learned.

None of the sources agreed with each other.

No one source had the answer with absolute certainty.

But they did give me a few other things :

    they told me that:

Holliday would make a decision before new year’s.

That Holliday wants to be a Yankee more than a Card.

That m is right and this situation is almost the same as last years w Tex

That Cash is laying in the weeds again

That Boras is going to give Cash the last right of refusal

That the Cards cant go as far as the Yankees can

    That CB is a genius

That PatM is perceptive and knows baseball

That GB7 will be better than ever, and will get pizza, beer, etc. but no more cigarettes

That Nick will not loose his sense of humor as many have aledged.

That Betsy will continue to worry

That Erica might still have a chance with Damon

That Wang will heal better than anybody expected and will return

that the Yanks would repeat as WC

That some things are essentially unknowable

    And that time will tell

But the biggest thing I learned from the most powerful sources in the Universe is:

That know matter what happens it’s ALL GOOD.

These are THE FACTS and I am stickin to them !

I can have nothing more to say on the matter.

  19. Rich in NJ December 21st, 2009 at 9:41 am

  20. CB December 21st, 2009 at 9:42 am

Or did she didn’t she leave her heart there or something…?

  21. Erin December 21st, 2009 at 9:45 am

  22. lets go yankees December 21st, 2009 at 9:46 am

    CB,

You referenced last night that I relied on many of the statistics used in these projections in my argument for Swisher.

I appreciate advanced statistics and find them very useful. However, I am becoming more and more wary of using them as projections for future success. For example the whole Gardner would be more valuable then Melky next season argument, I do not buy at all based on the data available.

You have also discussed at length the perils of using these statistics in projections. So I am wondering why you put weight into a projection of 25 players? If it is so difficult to project 1 player, how can a projection 25 players be at all accurate?

  23. GreenBeret7 December 21st, 2009 at 9:46 am

    GB, hope you’re doing well!

Alex is a superior hitter to Tex and should be hitting behind him. Tex is the one who needs protection as he was awful without Alex – even worse than he normally is in April.

    ————————————————————

It will be difficult to pitch around or walk Teixeira with 2 or 3 hitters already on base. It was more that Teixeira’s not as likely to go out of the strike zone as Rodriguez. Really, it will affect only 40 or so games. It will be interesting to watch the makeup of the batting order the coming season.

    Home for the Hollidays! (decisions)
    Holliday Cheer
    The Holliday for giving.
    Have a Holliday Jolly Christmas.
    Holliday Rush
    Holliday Traffic
    Happy Holliday!
    Holliday takes a Holiday.

I think if NYY goes after Holliday, Cabrera (who’s the better player between him and Gardner) gets traded. Gardner would probably be the better bench/part time player. He’s no full time starter. There’s too many things that he can’t do and gets over powered at the plate too often.

Ken Davidoff has a note today that the yankees are looking for a starter and that despite that Ben Sheets is “not even on the board” because they have serious concerns about his injury status.

That could all change once Sheets throws, but I do wonder why Sheets hasn’t had his throwing session for teams yet given how far we are into free agency. He’s likely still dealing with injury issues and trying to get back in true throwing shape.

Spending any money on a non-Sheets starter will likely be one of the poorer values a team could generate right now via free agency. Marquis, piniero, etc. would be horrible in the AL East.

And besides the Braves not a lot of teams are looking to trade pitching.

I don’t buy the posts on Zambrano – he has a terrible contract and could be a disaster in NY.

  56. CB December 21st, 2009 at 10:05 am

    Rich,

That’s very possible. I really think the team is completely done with the era of giving guys like Marquis or Garland free agent deals.

That leak may have been aimed at Sheets. However, it does sound like Sheets will not sign for quite a while given he’s planning that throw day in January.

He’s likely planning that throw day in January because he’s not ready right now. Which in itself isn’t great news.

Either way, the opportunity cost of trying to sign Sheets may be comparatively high if he is going to hold out to sign until well into January and other options come off the board.

Maybe this is all a ruse but there’s been very little talk about Sheets and all of it has focused on him not signing until late.

  57. Frank December 21st, 2009 at 10:05 am

“That could all change once Sheets throws, but I do wonder why Sheets hasn’t had his throwing session for teams yet given how far we are into free agency”

Wondered the same. The deeper we’ve gotten into FA, the worse it looks IMO. We’ve already learned fellow reclamation project Bedard is apparently a long ways from being ready to go. Could it be the same for Sheets?

    MTU:

It will require a boost in budget for ’11, which is certainly possible, to get Holliday this year and add Lee next.

Consider, they have $144M committed for ’11 right now. Say for the sake of argument, Holliday is locked in at a AAV of $17M. That’s $161M. You then add FA’s Rivera, Jeter and Lee, which will send you soaring over $200M before even discusing Arb cases for guys like Hughes and Joba.

Watching the Baltimore/White sox Game #4 from 1983. Man, it was a pleasure to watch the young lefty, Britt Burns pitch. Yanks were finally able to trade for him, but, the degenerative hip ended his career before he ever made a Yankee appearance at age 26. He was sensational, though.

  87. will December 21st, 2009 at 10:46 am

While things are slow on other fronts, I hope you guys will tolerate a potentially stupid question.

Happily, ARod’s hip seems OK. However, to better preserve his health going forward – say from 2011 or so onwards, wouldn’t the Yanks consider giving him a lot more time as DH (especially after Posada’s contract ends?) If so, they would need another 3B.

So here comes the stupid question; why not get Montero up to speed as a 3B, rather than strictly a catcher (one that might not be able to stay behind the plate anyway.)

It’s been my impression that catchers often make the conversion to 3B reasonably well. C also should easily have the arm for playing 3rd.

A move like that, if feasible, would mean that ARod and Montero could shift between 3B and DH (and Montero could possibly still be a back up catcher.)

GB7, I believe that you’ve seen Monty play. Do you believe he’d be capable of playing third? CB, SJ, Rich, Phil and all you other baseball “mavins” too numerous to name, what do you think?

Will, I doubt that Montero could. 1st base and a few emergency starts in right field in YS or left field in Boston, maybe. The best athlete right now is probablt Austin Romine, who could probably play either corner infield or outfield spot, full time. I’m hoping that Laird comes in to backup Rodriguez and play 1st and the outfield.

Here’s my plan: Sign Wang (b/c he is probably the best pitching option), use the money saved on Holliday, and wait for mid – season to trade for a pitcher if need be.

    Marquis, Pinero are filler.
Lower and Zambrano have bad deals.

been meaning to ask this question, but work has kept me away from you all – does signing Nick Johnson back add him to the list of “home-grown Yankees” playing for the team (the “Andy Pettite Rule”) or was he gone too long to qualify?

  100. Patrick December 21st, 2009 at 11:01 am

    Rishi,

I think he should be on the list. He came up with the Yanks and went through their system so I’d say he’s home-grown.

  101. Betsy -high on pie December 21st, 2009 at 11:02 am

GB, I don’t like Gardner, so I would hope that’s not the case. I think Cash is going to leave LF alone for now – I just don’t think he (or Hal, more importantly) is interested in yet another expensive long-term deal when we have so many of those in the first place

If the Yankees have any notion of ever developing young SP, they really need to leave Joba and Hughes in the rotation. It’s a very old team complicated by the fact that we have to give two more long-term deals to Jeter and Mo (I think Posada is gone after 2011). It’s just a team with very little flexibility – we’re similar to the Sox, except the Sox contracts will be expiring next year. It may cost us some games now, but we can’t afford to have tunnel vision – we DO have to think about the future (Joba and Hughes are a huge part of that). Given that our the only help we may get from our minors in the next couple of years is Montero (maybe Romine), it’s vital that Joba and Phil be given the chance to succeed. If not, we’re going to be a very old, very expensive team – the total opposite of what Cash is trying to do.

I agree he was drafted by the Yankees and came up through their system and even played on the same WS team as Pettitte that came up a couple games short.

  105. Betsy -high on pie December 21st, 2009 at 11:04 am

I don’t buy what Ken Davidoff has to say – he said that a week ago and it makes no sense. By that measure, Sheets wouldn’t be on anyone’s radar. He’s the only SP that has any interest for me……Since they have such a good relationship with Casey Close, why can’t they talk to him and see if he will allow a BP session for the Yanks? Short of Sheets, the Yankees are going to have to go at it with a wing and a prayer (Joba and Phil).

  107. RayVT December 21st, 2009 at 11:05 am

I believe the Yanks will sign Holliday and trade Swisher and his over $5M contract to an NL team. Melky becomes the starter in RF & Hoffmann or Gardner as the backup. I expect Hairston back as the Utility guy as well. So in essence it would be Holliday/Granderson/N Johnson for Damon/Swisher/Matsui. Note NJ can play 1B as a backup and I believe Miranda will be up as well. Defense would be much improved and so would team age and offense too IMO. The Swisher trade & probably Gardner too would bring back a long man or LH bullpen arm. I believe the Yanks are willing to go with both Joba & Hughes with Aceves/Gaudin/Mitre as backups along with Nova and a couple of other minor leaguers.

Well, I needed a hobby, so, I chose this. I was at Ft. Hood, Texas and learning to play golf (I suppose you could say I was learning). My golfing instructor was Orville Moody (who two years later won the US Open. After my first two lessons, he advised me to find a hobby that wasn’t so dangerous. I didn’t understand that, until I found out that he was referring to as too dangerous to others…not me. A month later I was sent to SF complex at Ft. Bragg, NC. After that, I got orders to Vietnam. I always suspected that Orville had something to do with that.

    I’ll start!

To SF: Chad Gaudin, Kei and the very old and expensive Derek Jeter(he’s a free agent next season anyway and NO WAY are the Yanks going that route!)

From SF: Tim Lincecum (sans the stoner hair) and Kung Fu Panda Sandoval. (Arod will play SS)

Asking about Zambrano does not say to me the Yanks don’t have a budget. For all intents and pruposes, they have about 10 million left to hit the magical 200 AAV marker.

If the Cubs eat some of Carlos’ salary, and coupled with Melky and maybe a minor league arm, I dont see why the Yanks don’t at least entertain this thought.

While we’re considering possible rotation help, a name to keep in mind is Eric Bedard. He’ll be 31 at the start of the season, has a 51-41 lifetime record in 6 seasons including 4 full seasons in the AL East, is a lefty with a 3.71 lifetime ERA, with an 8.8 K/9 rate. If he’s healthy, he could add effective pitching depth to the retoation for at least the first half of the season.

The way the pitching market is shaping up teams are primed to get hosed on bad contracts.

That goes for both free agent signings and trades.

Allocating additional resources to pitching, at this point in time, for the yankees could be an absolute waste.

“In 2009, Matsui batted 5th in 63 games. Alex batted 4th in 122 games.

That’s a whole lot of games Matsui wasn’t batting behind Alex “protecting” him”

Overall, the Yankees got a .781 OPS from the 5th spot with 32 homers and 101 rbi on the year. Matsui was good for nearly half those homers (15) and RBI (48) and posted an .850 OPS hitting 5th. This means in the 100 games Matsui did not hit 5th the Yankees got a fairly pedestrian 17 homers and 53 RBI with an OPS below .750.

  144. pat December 21st, 2009 at 12:22 pm

    Frank

No debate that Hideki is a good 5 hitter but isn’t it Alex’s production that people are concerned about and not so much the 5 hitter?

Not sure where to find the info other than checking individual boxscores but it would be interested to see how Alex did with Matsui vs other 5 hitter hitting behind him.

    We will see I guess!
