Happy holidays from middle America

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Dec 25, 2009 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Word is, it might actually snow in Sikeston, Missouri today. A white Christmas is a rare thing where I grew up, so some people — my mother being one of them – are pretty excited about the possibility.

Of course, we’re talking about two or three inches at the absolute most. If my mother ever dealt with real snow, her sense of excitement might change.

Today I just wanted to wish everyone a happy holiday. Like Sam said last night, I wouldn’t expect much news through the weekend, but I’m sure we’ll both be checking in from time to time just the same.

The number of kind of emails and holiday wishes I’ve gotten the past few days have been amazing. Thank you all for welcoming me into your world. Let’s all enjoy the holiday season and get ready for that next sacred day on the calendar.

Pitchers and catchers.

Happy Holidays to all the LoHudders and especially Chad and Sam for turning this blog into a true reflection of the Yankee organization and Yankee fans. This place has been a joy to read and post on especially since October when the Yankees started on their journey towards their 27th World Series Championship. Let’s get number 28 next year boys.

  2. Ross December 25th, 2009 at 9:09 am

    Merry Christmas, Chad!

I hope that Santa brought you a laptop ( a netbook, even?)

Enjoy the snow with your family, and thanks to you and Sam for a wonderful job.

    Cheers!

    :)

I am thankful for so much this time of year and realize all the blessings I have. My cup runneth over with my lohud family and our Yankee fandom. And truly, the cherry on the cake has been our dashing trio of Chad, Sam, and Josh. Seriously what sweeties we have been graced with. THANK YOU GUYS!!!

Just a question – do people consider it unPC to say Merry Christmas? I said Happy Hanukkah during Hanukkah, which is now over. Or is it that Kwanza and other celebrations are also in the mix and that Happy Holidays covers it all?

Anyway, since today is Christmas for those who celebrate Christmas, MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! I will try to get a handle on the different holidays because I think it is important to honor each tradition. If I get some time maybe I can try to find out the dates for whatever holidays are upcoming, in case anyone is interested.

    :)

“Just a question – do people consider it unPC to say Merry Christmas?”

I don’t think so. There seems to be a segment of the “media” that likes to pretend that such is the case, but I think it’s a gambit on their part.

    “Merry Christmas”

    Rich,

Same to you. Yes, I remember you from that other site and you’re quite different now than back then. You and I went a round or two back around 2004 and 2005 when that place was more like Dodge City of the internet.

  10. NJ Steve December 25th, 2009 at 9:38 am

Gardner is better than you think!

First, why in the world would Gardner play LF and Granderson be in CF? Gardner can cover more ground than Granderson. I would play Gardner in CF and let Granderson Platoon in LF.

Also, if you look at how many extra plays Gardner makes a week his OPS is solid. People were luke warm about Melky, but I was one who felt Gardner should have been playing. Gardner would have saved at least 2 hits a week which I will equate to 3 bases (figure one was a double and 1 was a single). I think that is MORE than fair. Saving 3 bases a week is about 76 bases over the course of a year. In 600 AB’s that adds 125 points on your OPS. When you add in the SB advantage (let’s assume Gardner steals 50 bases and gets caught 13 times, this would be worth 50-26 or 24 more bases) his total would be 100 extra bases or .167 points of OPS or an adjusted OPS of .724 + .167 = 890! Gardner also had an OPS of .756 when he was playing more regularly in the first half. Because Granderson is better defensively than Melky, let’s assume that instead of saving 76 bases over Melky, Gardner only saves 36 bases over Granderson over the course of the year. This would be an equivalent OPS of .724 + .100 or .824.

Gardner is not great, but he is much better than people think and was a more valuable CF than Melky last year as well. If he can give us the same .724 OPS playing every day in CF, we would be just fine there.

  14. mick December 25th, 2009 at 9:42 am

    You know what?
We’re gonna win this thing again next year so if Mr. Holliday(father or son) don’t wanna be a part of it then, so be it.

That’s all I have to say on the matter.

  15. 86w183 December 25th, 2009 at 9:44 am

Gardner plays every day and Granderson platoons?!!??!

Talk about getting a lump of coal in your stocking!

  16. mick December 25th, 2009 at 9:46 am

    Wait!
    Stop the presses.
Why didn’t I think of that?

    Granderson to platoon.

    Yes!
Such a simple solution, mind boggling.

Christmas Eve rumors: Yanks talking to Reed Johnson
    By Benjamin Kabak
The baseball world slows down a bit on Christmas Eve as executives, agents and players settle in for some quality time with their families. The Yankees though are still working on their holiday shopping. As Joel Sherman reported this afternoon, the Yankees are “talking regularly” with Reed Johnson and his representatives. Johnson, 33, would be a left field target for the Yanks, and he would give them some flexibility as he is a right-handed batter who can play all three outfield positions. He doesn’t, however, hit too well. He has a career line of .282/.344/.411 with a 95 OPS+ and has had an OPS+ above 100 just twice in seven years and not at all since 2006. He played just 65 games last year and has averaged 84 games per season over the last three years while hitting just .269/.333/.383. Brett Gardner and Jamie Hoffmann can probably do that. · (48) ·

Let´s go into the Season with Gardi and Hoffmann if it turns out that they can´t bring it! Trade for one! But maybe Cashman got the right man! I can´t say anything about Hoffmann, because I haven´t seen him!

My thought on Reed Johnson is that at his age, in this market, with his stats, he would likely have to take a paycut from his $3m salary last season.

In light of the foregoing, if the Yankees really wanted him, they would have signed him already. Consequently, I think he is nothing more than a fallback option, one that I would hope they pass on.

I would go with Gardner/Hoffman unless a very good player is acquired. If they don’t work out, they can upgrade by the trading deadline.

  29. NYY626 December 25th, 2009 at 10:08 am

  33. Rich in NJ December 25th, 2009 at 10:12 am

Gammons being Gammons (via MLB Trade Rumors):

While calling Scott Boras “brilliant”, Gammons questions his wisdom in turning down the five-year deal worth $16.5 each season to Matt Holliday by the Red Sox. That could be the best offer he has seen so far.

  37. mick December 25th, 2009 at 10:16 am

Being in a position of strength, meaning we can take him or leave him, is a luxury.
Really, though, what is the major differences between offers for Holliday? Can it really be that big?
It really comes down to whether he wants to play here or not.

Maybe he knows he can’t take the pressure of NY.

  38. GreenBeret7 December 25th, 2009 at 10:19 am

Holliday may not be all that crazy. His natural swing and power is to right and right center field. He most like realizes that Fenway will screw up his swing like it has with other right handers, and like YS’s right field has destroyed swings of players like Giambi and others.

Why is it that if a player doesn’t want to play for the Yankees, it’s because “he knows that he can’t handle the pressure”. There’s no more pressure with the Yanks than there is in Boston or Philadelphia or other places. It’s a load of BS.

I think there is more pressure in Boston and Philly because there are so many other things that interest people and divert the media in NY, that it reduces the monomaniacal focus on baseball that exists in other cities.

In a similar vein, I presume you’ve either read or at least heard of Lawrence Ritter’s “The Glory of Their Times” written in 1966. While the book is a baseball classic, I recently purchased a CD set of Ritter’s original interviews with the players from the early ’60′s. They are absolutely engrossing. Interviews include around a dozen players including Sam Crawford, Fred Snodgrass, Smokey Joe Wood, Hans Lobert, Goose Goslin, and numerous others.

    ********

    Merry Christmas Trisha :-)

Maybe this story will answer your question.

When I was in 9th grade, a girl in my class gave out Christmas Cards. And she gave one to every single person in the class but me. And I was really offended cause this was someone I actually spoke to. So I went up to her later and asked her why she didn’t give me a card cause I thought we were friends.

And she said the cards said “Merry Christmas” and she knew I didn’t celebrate that so she didn’t want to offend me.

Who really knows at this point.

The bottom line for me is if MH wants to be a Yankee he can be a Yankee.

If he doesn’t want to be then he can go elsewhere.

    It’s up to him.

I need advice. It is acceptable to wear my new Pettitte World Series jersey all day or do you think I should wear something a little more Christmas appropriate?

Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates!

    *********

Ummm- completely acceptable. If a 27th world championship attire is not considered “festive”, what is??? Snowflakes??? I think not……

    Stuff happens.

    Remember what happened to Buckner.

That doesn’t prove to me that he can’t handle pressure.

It proves to me that he can take his eye off the ball once in while like so many others.

As far as Holliday signing with the Yankees, there’s been no irrefutable proof that the Yanks have made him a better offer than others or even made one at all.
    ===============================================
It is amazing that not one rumor has started. That is the definition of stealth. I can’t see how they haven’t spoken. Maybe he was told to bring back your best offer which is probably St Lou and which it looks like we won’t top or even meet. A game of chicken where he might want to come here but doesn’t want to leave anything on the table.

Both of those plays were harder than they looked plus there definitely was major pressure involved.

Even if Buckner makes the play where was the pitcher covering 1st?

    Mick-

My take on it is that Boras still figures that time is on his side.

Right now that might be his only weapon.

He wants to get MH a 9 figure contact from somebody.

And he’s playin the game hoping that something will change to give him the cahnce for that to happen.

Sooner or later one of two things might happen :

Either he will get that offer ( which I doubt)

Or He/matt will relent and settle for the best that’s available.

It’s a waiting game for now.

Boras hopes he can stir the pot.

    Let’s see.

As time goes by more and more teams positions on things become more and more fixed don’t they ?

Right now MH might represent a bargain price, and that may cause an unusal action on someone’s part.

That has some gravity to it.

    JMPO.

Go out and get your best offer and let me see it. No more shopping my offer. I’m sure that, especially with the economics as it is, that other teams may be doing the same.

  82. Joe Vogel December 25th, 2009 at 11:04 am

It never ceases to amaze me at the overzealousness in which the “top” couple of FA’s are pursued with each year, often to the extent that they are given grossly exhorbiant long-term deals that many teams later regret. Too often, GM’s try to squeeze a player whose talent and production level into a contract that is three sizes to large for his girth.
Take last season for example. Without the Yankees and Braves glaring needs in the starting rotation, would Burnett and Lowe have received such deals? Will both teams ultimately regret the back end of those deals (the Braves seem to already)? Would the Cubs have given a gazillion dollars to a LF who can’t field and refuses to walk (see Soriano)? Would the ‘Stros have given a similarly large deal to a similar type LF (Carlos Lee)?
Dice-K? Gary Matthew Jr.? Chan Ho Park?

The point is, there are many red flags surrounding Holliday (massive home/road splits, likely defensive liability with age, 30 y/o now), but these are being glossed over by the desires of teams who have immediate corner OF needs who feel they must fill them at any cost.

Merry Christmas LoHuders…….I just made my way back from a very long High Mass….So, what’s this about the BoSox offereing Holiday a 16.5 million dollar contract ???? I’ve yet to read the papers……I still think my knees are shot from being an Altar Boy….Due to always getting into trouble as a lad, my punishment would be kneeling down and praying for forgiveness…..The floors are marble…..

    ————————————————————

Oh, Pat…..On Christmas day, and you lie about being an alter boy? Now, I could believe that you robbed the collection box and stole the wine….but, that’s as far as it goes.

I would quibble with NJ Steve’s math. Including Gardner’s fielding in his OPS would add to both components of OPS: On Base Average and Slugging.

NJ Steve assumed that Gardner’s fielding saves the equivalent of a single and a double every week for 25 weeks. Suppose he had 650 plate appearances and 600 ABs. The extra 75 total bases adds .125 to his Slugging Average, as NJ Steve pointed out. Also, the extra 50 hits adds .076 to his OB. So his OPS goes up by around .200.

I don’t know if Gardner makes 2 plays per week that another fielder would not have made. That may be high. However, I do believe that fielding is important. If Gardner and Granderson play regularly and if Hoffman, Cervelli and Pena are backups, the Yanks will be a better fielding team in 2010. I think that improvement will be significant. Cashman deserves credit for his focus on fielding.

Whether you think Burnett deserved $16.5 mil or not, obviously, Cashman and the Yankees did. NYY doesn’t win the AL and WS without him. Imagine having the less than average Derek Lowe for a mil less?

AJ is basically a .500 pitcher. He has some great starts and some bad ones. Yanks wanted him and signed him.

As far as Gardner, don’t think Cashman will go with him as their full time left fielder. I expect him to trade or sign a left fielder, but not a Holliday or Bay.

It’s the back end of the Burnett contract that will likely be most regrettable. Here’s something mildly interesting to chew on.

During the 2008 season, Burnett’s fastball averaged 94.3 mph, ranking in the top 5 in the league. He was the ONLY pitcher on the wrong side of 30 y/o in the top 12. This tells me that he has hung onto his big heater longer than most pitchers. Up until this point in his career, his results have been checkered. Occasional brilliance interspersed with periods of wildness and inconsistency. My question is this: What kind of pitcher will Burnett be when he loses 2 mph off of his fastball. This is likely to happen during this 5 year contract (signed from age 32 thru 37). Some pitchers have adjusted: Seaver, Mussina (although it took him time), Perry, even Maddux (albeit he began with less of a heater). Does anyone really believe that A.J. will transition into more of a precision pitcher as he loses his top-notch stuff? If he doesn’t, $16.5 million per year is going to look less and less like a palatable deal.

Hope everyone is having a great Christmas.

It’s not unreasonable to question if AJ will be worth having at $ 16.5 M a year for four more seasons, but as far as I’m concerned he was a very important part of this team with his 207 innings.

He had three horrible starts at Fenway Park, a place where he historically pitched very well. Take those disasters out and you’re looking at a 13-7, 3.38 ERA for 30 starts. I expect him to post more wins and a lower ERA in 2010. If he’s not so good in 2012-13 I’ll deal with it then.

AJ helped bring in No. 27. To me that makes the contract worth it. Ditto CC and Tex. But No. 28 would be nice.

“Gardner plays every day and Granderson platoons?!!??!

Talk about getting a lump of coal in your stocking!”

Vinny B and 86w183, I don’t think you realize how bad Granderson is against lefties. Why in the world would you want to play him against lefties instead of Gardner? Gardner’s OPS was .781 against lefties last year and even if you took his first year in the bigs into account where he had an OPS of .250 in 24 AB’s, Gardner’s OPS combined is .626. Do you realize that Granderson’s OPS against lefties over the past 3 years is .570! FIVE SEVENTY! Why do people think he shouldn’t be platooned? Detroit fans know this and they also know that he is neutralized with a lefty coming out of the pen. Granderson is a GREAT player against righties, but he is a terrible hitter against lefties and Gardner is better than he is against lefties.

You start Granderson against all righties and you use him as a pinch hitter when a lefty is on the mound or a defensive replacement, but he has no business starting against a lefty.

    Why isn’t this obvious?

    Betsy,

Thai/Indian/Chinese-that sounds interesting. Is it a buffet?
Around here it is straight Chinese foe me.

  168. 86w183 December 25th, 2009 at 12:43 pm

As for LF, to me the only issue is they need to add a quality RH bat somewhere. The first eight hitters are set and that’s 3 LH (Grandy, Cano, NJ), 2 RH (DJ, Alex) and 3 SH (Tex, Swish, Jorge).

Not sure it’s a good idea to have a fourth full-time LH bat in the regular lineup. I like Byrd, but not at the three years @ $ 6 M that I’ve seen bandied about.

If they have that much to spend just get Melky back from the Braves.

  169. blake December 25th, 2009 at 12:43 pm

Lackey has had a better career than Aj thus far but going forward I would rather have AJ with his contract than I would lackey with his. Lackeys elbow is a real concern and he has shown signs of decline where Ajs stuff is as good as ever.

  171. Betsy - high on pie December 25th, 2009 at 12:46 pm

86, I agree….well said. AJ doesn’t get enough credit for game 2 of the WS. He had a very bad slump in August which blew up his #s, but but up until then he had a 3.63 ERA, which is darn good. Early in the season, when everyone else was struggling, AJ stopped several losing streaks. He’s hardly the most consistent pitcher, but he’s a good pitcher and at times very good. He’s also a terrific guy – I was able to watch his interview with Brandon Steiner on You Tube and he just adores his teammates and his manager (as well as being a Yankees).

He was not thrilled with the year he had last year and I believe he’s going to come to camp with something to prove. If he can be better, great. If he’s just the same, well he eats innings and is still a good pitcher.

  172. Betsy - high on pie December 25th, 2009 at 12:48 pm

    Pat M, you’re very welcome.

Fran, no it’s not…..Hicksville is a very intersting area. There is a large Indian community and, as such, there are a lot of Indian restaurants. This is actually not the only Indian/Chinese type restaurant in the area. I tried the other one awhile ago and loved it. I haven’t been back because the parking is a pain.

  173. Betsy - high on pie December 25th, 2009 at 12:48 pm

Fran, I stand corrected. I believe they do offer a buffet, but it is generally a sit-down restaurant.

  174. 86w183 December 25th, 2009 at 12:51 pm

    NJ Steve —

Granderson was awful against lefties last year, but his OPS against LH pitching in 2008 was a more than acceptable .739. That’s the Granderson I’m looking for in 2010.

Gardner has never given me any indication that he’s an every day player and his career OPS against both lefties and righties is sub .700.

  175. NJ Steve December 25th, 2009 at 12:53 pm

David in Cal, I used 600 as my number as my assumption was that he would not play against some tough lefties and he would be batting last.

I also just added the bases which would really just add to teh slugging so the numbers are correct. As for 2 plays a week, that was over Melky and I am sure that is more than reasonable as he gets to a lot of balls that Melky can’t and last year I did an unofficial count and the number was actually higher and they usually were extra base hits. Now I haven’t watched nearly as much of Granderson so I lessened it to about 6 bases a month, which is about 3 bases every 2 weeks.

  176. Fran (the original) and OPPC member December 25th, 2009 at 12:54 pm

    ————————————–

In a CAREER of 674 games, Granderson’s OPS against LHP is .614. As a Yankee fan, I may wish him to be able to hit LHP’s but that don’t make it true. Conversely, Gardner may not ever effectively hit LHP’s (or RHP’s for that matter), but the jury is still out. As opposed to Granderson who has just under 2900 career PA’s, Gardner has just 425 PA’s, the equivilant of 2/3 of ONE season. If player determinations were made on most players on such a small sample size, Don Mattingly would still be beating the bushes along with Al Kaline, Greg Maddux, and Tom Glavine. Not everybody starts their career like Dwight Gooden and Albert Pujols.

I know this about Gardner: he has tremendous speed, he’s a grinder who doesn’t take plays off, and he has had robust success throughout the minor league professional ranks. He is the MLB version of Tim Dwight or Wes Welker. This is a critical season in his career although there remains a strong possibility that he will not be given a real shot at an everyday job.

  179. NJ Steve December 25th, 2009 at 1:06 pm

First of all .739 is not really acceptable unless you field like Gardner or better, but why would you take his best year against lefties out of the last 3 years and say that is how you would expect him to hit? Granderson’s last 3 year total OPS against lefties is .570. How much better is really a reasonable number to look at? If you say .700 that is a huge stretch, but let’s even say that. he is still not someone who should be playing with a .700 OPS against lefties. I mean everyone is saying Gardner can’t hit and in 248 AB’s his combined OPS was .724 and it was better when he got to play more regularly. One other note is that the book on Gardner was it took him a little while to adjust at each level because of his different type of swing, but once he did he was very productive. He made adjustments last year that helped a lot and when you take his SB’s into account his OPS improves to about .790 BEFORE taking his defense into account.

If the Yankees think they can make Granderson a .700 hitter against lefties, that is a stretch, but I hope they can. Either way, if they think he should be starting against lefties over Gardner, I think they are simply wrong. I also think not enough people on this board realize how bad Granderson is against lefties.

For perspective, everyone knew Molina couldn’t hit well at all. For his 3 years with the Yankees his OPS was .585…now compare that to Granderson against lefties

  180. 86w183 December 25th, 2009 at 1:15 pm

You don’t platoon an all star because you think some kid who has never proven himself superior in any area can see what he can do.

Fine, Granderson is .614 against LHP and Gardner is .627. You think THAT justifies platooning when Granderson has done his as an every day player while Gardner has seen just spot duty? That’s crazy.

Your fantasy world of Gardner robbing two hits a week is simply of your own making. Gardner as a platoon LF with a decent RH hitter with some power is fine. Garnder platooning with Curtis Granderson is just plain nuts.

Quite by accident last night (very late last night) I came upon the Mormon Tabernacle’s 2009 Christmas Concert. Thankfully I recorded it because I was sure I would fall asleep. A shout out goes to Yogins, a Yankee fan who in 1998 or so told me I should invest in TIVO. It took me until this year to have a DVR installed. What an idiot I was to wait this long!!!

Anyway, for anyone who may have seen the concert, it is pretty much a bromide for anyone who wants to feel imbued with the real meaning of the Christmas season but who has lost it in the commercial hustle and bustle (guilty as charged.) I am now getting ready to go to the family Christmas dinner and have the concert on in the background. What absolutely beautiful music that group makes. I’m sure it will be repeated. It’s on the PBS channel.
