Happy New Year!
Just wanted to welcome everyone to 2010.
And by everyone, I mean everyone living in Eastern Standard Time. For those of you a little farther west, refresh this post in an hour (or two, or three). The post won’t be any different, but at least it will be accurate. For those of you who rang in the new year already, how’s it going so far? Everything pretty much the same? Good.

to the lohud blog in 2010! cheers! #28 in 2010!
Best wishes for a healthy and happy new year to you all.
Happy 2010. It was good hearing “New York New York” after the ball dropped. Brings back memories of Yankee victories.
Happy New Year, Chad! Thanks for such great work in 2009…looking forward to spending way too much time at home and work reading you and Sam (and the greatest group of posters on the web) in 2010!
Happy New Year to all. Best wishes for a healthy and happy 2010.

2010 will be a new experiense for NY fans it will bring #28 for the YANKEES & #2 for the JETS

Hey what’s life like in 2010 ???? It’s 2009 here in So. Cal……Happy New Year guys
Lets hope 2010 is a little bit nicer on the farm than 2009. Too many injuries last year.
2010 = Year of MONTERO
Cashman will have a new LF for us soon for the new year in Elijah Dukes
Happy New Year Lohud. To those who haven’t made the journey to 2010 yet Godspeed!
Elijah Dukes? Lots of talent but no discipline. No thanks.
Happy New Year to all writers readers and contributors of the LoHud blog.

Happy New Year to all……
MONTERO….never seen this kid play, hope he’s as good as they say he is…
Happy New Years Chad. I really appreciated your blog when you were covering AAA in Scranton, and am glad to have you covering the Yankees now. I hope your holidays were fantastic, and look forward to this season.
By the way, as much as I enjoyed your old blog, I think the only reason that I ever was turned on to it was because of Pete. I didn’t always agree with him, nor did I appreciate his obvious personal dislike of A-Rod, but he worked tirelessly on this blog, and did a fantastic job of linking to other good Yankees information. I hope Boston is treating him fantastically, and that New York is treating you great as well.
2010 – peter abeless, thank you sam and chad and happy new year!
Went to Dunkin Donuts 10 before to see my good pal Jana(and got a lot of extra stuff since it’s closing time)…
Drank hot chocolate with the Lohud poster David…
I learned 12 comes right before 16…
Played some old N64 games like Mario Kart- Rainbow Ride glitch cheat here I come…
And now I’m here writing on Lohud, hoping for another Yankee championship!
2010: so far, so good
So for three hours the page becomes an example of time travel. Who woulda thunk it? Happy New Year Everyone.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!
Great Job by all 3 of you guys since taking over, especially Chad!
Heres to a great 2010
March 3rd 1st ST Game!
just had a debate with a red sox fan over saying “two thousand ten” or “twenty ten”.
she said it should be twenty ten.
i said i liked two thousand ten.
she said try saying twenty ten.
so i did.
but it came out twenty seven for some reason.
there went my new year’s resolution to be kind to red sox fans.
48 more days until pitchers and catchers take the field in Tampa for their 1st workout.
Physicals the day before.
“48 more days until pitchers and catchers take the field in Tampa for their 1st workout.”
You know how they say August and September are the “dog days” for the ballplayers – the time they need to get a second wind? Well, these are my dog days, from about New Year’s Day until the first player walks through the gates in Tampa. Snow, cold, grey skies and then… the blessed first warm rays and the smell of cut grass and old leather. Aaaaahhhh…
Happy new year!
2009 was a great year for Yankee fans and the 2010 team could be even better.. Should be fun.
Murph…I couldn’t agree more.
I keep going to the local paper .coms thinking I’m going to find something good to read, but I keep getting the same stuff…ughhh.
Now it is time to search for minor league info…
Happy New year to all.
2009 wasn’t a good year for some, but having the Yankees win it all made it a lot better for Yankees fans.
Happy New Year… From Denmark I can truly say that this blog is outstanding! Simply the best way to get news regarding the Yankees…
Happy New Year all! It is spitting snow and the river is nearly frozen over here in northern VT. Thank goodness for this blog and a hot stove!
Sorry to read about Brandon Laird. Sounds as if the lad may have some personal growing up to do as well as developing his baseball tools. Plenty of time, though, at 22, for both.
Happy new year to you all!
Happy twentyten!
Go yanks, let’s dominate this decade.

Have you ever had a few drinks and gotten loud or had an argument?
What are the odds of:
1. The Yankees signing Chapman and him being a bullpen weapon by September?
2. Montero being in the lineup in the 2nd half? Don’t know whether to wish for this or not because it could mean that Johnson has gotten hurt if it happens..

All in all I’m just hoping that the next decade will be a helluvalot better than the last one. For the Knicks and Rangers that’s almost unavoidable, for the Giants and Jets less so and for the Yanks quite a challenge.
For our country and economy it HAS to be a better decade, doesn’t it? God Bless!
Found this gossip item in today’s NY Post. Is Derek getting married?
Posted: 1:00 AM, January 1, 2010
He’s certainly earned it. Sources say Derek Jeter is away on yet another Caribbean break. The Yankee captain and his gorgeous girlfriend, Minka Kelly, were said to be spending New Year’s Eve on ultraexclusive Canouan Island in the Grenadines. One source said Jeter’s family, including younger sister Sharlee, have also flown to the island, which boasts a Raffles resort and a Trump International golf club. Last month, The Post revealed that Jeter and Kelly, who are rumored to be planning a wedding, jetted off to St. Barts after the World Series. Jeter’s rep couldn’t be reached.

Happy new year, Murph. I’m somewhat surprised that that you could remember back 50 years to when you were 22 years old.
I’m of a mind to find out exactly how far Brandon Laird was involved since the papers have only said he was arrested for disorderly conduct. If I’d been arrested for the number of times that somebody had said that I was disorderly, I’d still be doing time.
Young people and generally guys tend to get a little loud when having drinks. I probably should have been arrested at my brother’s last night for getting loud. Of couse, i am a bit older, being 23 or so.
The stats are that 7 out of 10 athletes (that is 70% for you slow ones) get arrested during their careers.
So why is this even worth discussing?
Please stop it. NOW.
It’s non-news.

***Cano***uan Island?
I’m glasd that he has a team mate and friend that allowed Jeret and his young lady to get away from prying eyes. I’m sure that Robby Cano will forever be a best friend now. What a guy. Just think of how rich he could get if he walked a little more. Might even be worth an extra $1,000.
It’s really strange….the ball drops in Times Square…and the Yankees win! (At least, that’s what it sounds like; I keep expecting to hear John Sterling in the mix, somewhere.)

How long will it be before somebody connects this with an attempt by Robbie Cano to stay on the Yankees? Perhaps this will sway the people that want him gone and Jeter will give him a stay of execution.
Morning Fran. hope you have a great New Year’s.
Angels have interest in Chapman, BoSawx and Marlins made offers.
Seems that Kendry Morales of the Anglels has befriended him.

Time for some New Year’s resolutions:
Aroldis Chapman
Chien-Ming Wang
blake – What are the odds of:
1. The Yankees signing Chapman and him being a bullpen weapon by September?
2. Montero being in the lineup in the 2nd half? Don’t know whether to wish for this or not because it could mean that Johnson has gotten hurt if it happens..
———————————-
1) Slim to none: Chapman is reported to have real problems with command, has NO above average secondary pitches, and there are some that question his mental makeup. I’m not sure why people are so seduced with a 97 mph FB. From Farnsworth to Daniel Cabrera (and Brackman too?), baseball is littered with hard throwers who never amounted to anything.
COMMAND is the single most important aspect of pitching!
2) Slim to none: While Montero made great strides last year on his defense, it is still poor. In order to be Posada’s replacement (2011 part time), he still has work to do. He is very young and raw, and promoting him this year would hurt his development. We may see him in Sept. for a cup of coffee.
I WANT BEN SHEETS ON THE YANKEES, YOU DUMMY CASHMAN.. VAZQUEZ FALLS APART IN BIG MOMENTS I DONT CARE ABOUT THE STATS.

It has been fun to watch Chad grow as a writer on this site after having followed him the past years on the Scranton site where he had less room to express himself.
With all due respect to Pete, this site has improved a lot with Chad and Sam. Keep it up during 2010…
I wouldn’t read too much into Jeter’s family joining them on that island – he’s with his family alot, and it is the holidays – New Year’s – and all. If the said the island was suddenly overrun with co-Yankees and celebrities then I’d be suspicious.
Though, I do believe Minka is or will be “the one.” She’s certainly sticking around, and she’s even been allowed to see a game or two at the stadium!
(Not to mention it looks like his mom might like her)
happy new year to you and your family too gb7

Too bad that Melky didn’t think of it sooner! Happy New Year to you and your family as well.
2010 predictions:
Joba Chamberlain has a breakout year as a starter.
Cano wins the batting crown.
A-Rod has another giantic season
Gardener turns into Mickey Rivers. Steals over 40 bags.
Z-mac tears up AAA.
Montero Hits 300 + at AAA. Catching improves. promoted by ASB.
Adam Warren turns into a fast mover.
Romulo Sanchez is a weapon out of the BP.
D-rob continues his awesomeness.
Grandy hits 40 at NYS.
And of course, the Yanks repeat as WS champs.
Doreen,
But it is fun to speculate. And I do agree it looks like Minka will be the one. She is always sitting with Derek’s mom and if mom approves she’s got it made.
Happy New Year!

Angels Interested In Aroldis Chapman
By Mike Axisa [January 1 at 9:06am]
“Mark Saxon of ESPN Los Angeles says that the Angels “appear to be lining up an offer” for Cuban southpaw Aroldis Chapman. The Halos might have an advantage over other clubs in the Chapman sweepstakes because of first baseman Kendry Morales, who has become a good friend of the lefthander.
“Selfishly, we’re a nice fit. It’s hard to come over here, and Kendry gives him some idea of the pitfalls of the adjustment,” Angels scouting director Eddie Bane said. “It’s a fit, but who knows? It depends on the price.”

Northy,
I actually was quoting Shakespeare…fairly famous quote.
No offense was meant to Denmark, which I have studied a great deal, having played Hamlet now twice and in preparation for a third show.
I guess I might have said ‘something is rotten in the state of Denmark’ – an even more famous quote, but then again, you might have chosen to take offense to that, as well.
Tom in NJ seemed to reach the obvious conclusion – that Shakespeare’s most famous character was being quoted from the writer’s most famous play, and that no malice was intended.
For there was no such stuff in my thoughts.

OldYanksFan, I mostly agree with your comments. Chapman is nowhere near ready to be a major league starter but I think he could potentially be a weapon out of the pen by September call up time because command and secondary pitches aren’t nearly as important in that role. This is all hypothetical of course.
As for Montero, if we see him for any significant time in 2010, then I think that may mean that they have either given up on him as a catcher or someone has gotten hurt and those aren’t good things.. Its more likely we see a DH/C split with him and Posada in 2011 I would say..
UK, the spoof of Star Wars was done a couple of years ago – it was hilarious. The spoof of Empire Strikes Back was just done – it was very good. On first viewing, I don’t think it was quite as good as the SW spoof, but I want to watch it again before I decide that is definitely the case.

Jean, Who’s idea was this budget thing anyway? Curses on his house I say and I’m not even Jewish.
And fade to black
I really think you would enjoy Betsy. All-time faves for me.
By the way, I loved the original “Twilight Zone” and “The Outer Limits”. I think the latter one was more sci-fi than the former. Got the complete series on DVD for both of them.

Bodhi,
Are you going to the Jet game on Sunday? My nephew has tickets and I am trying to get 1 from him.
====
Fran,
I will be there.
I wish I could help, but don’t have any extras for this one.
You might check out stubhub and wait for them to drop. Heard they weren’t that bad, but haven’t checked myself.
Good luck getting in – and all the best to you in the New Year
.
I am with you Nick. I just love them. And little Nicky too! The interplay between them is priceless.

Queen Margrethe is a old, stylish angry woman I’m not very fond of her, but she is rather irellevant to me so:)
===
LOL. Saw a picture of her when she was around 40 – she was kinda hot, actually.
Happy New Year.
12 hours into 2010 and people are debating Hamlet.
Amazing.
I don’t care what Hamlet’s OPS is, or how famous he might be – he is not the Yankee answer in LF.
Let him fight with Hoffmann for the last spot on the bench.
DT,
Hamlet’s sport of choice is soccer.
Great playmaker – can’t finish.
Craw, maybe I’ll do that, too – buy the series so I don’t have to wait for them to air on TCM or whatever channel.
Wow, you have the complete TZ series? I have a a couple of box sets (season 1 and I forget the other season)……..I like to shut the lights off in my room and shut the door so I can immerse myself in the creepy atmosehere.
Hamlet lacks that killer instinct all the great ones have..

Finish? I thought he was Danish.
Okay, okay – I’m the one who thought Italics drank Chianti.
Oh, how embarassing.
Happy New Year, everybody!
I woke up too early!
“I like to shut the lights off in my room and shut the door so I can immerse myself in the creepy atmosehere”
Red Sox blogs work too.
Hey, the Thrill is back.
Hmm, that didn’t work – Let’s see now, what rhymes with Thrill?
Bodhi,
Happy New Year to you as well. Thanks for the suggestions. Should be an exciting game on Sunday. Plus all of the pre-game festivities with the past players coming back.
At 1 o’clock, the Bruins and Flyers are playing hockey in Fenway Park.
I think they should give out free beer to both the Bruins and Flyers fans in attendance, and then just let nature take it’s course…
Northy-
Thanks.
Blake-
Not zero just highly unlikely.
And yes, we have agreed on many things including MH if his price was < 120 Mill with flexible terms.

Thanks, Fran.
Hoping to see my man Matt Snell.
Thanks to Matt, I will never make the mistake of assuming that a player who walks off the field under his own power is coming back onto the field.
If ya’ll are looking for some good sci-fi dvds of old tv shows, get Irwin Allen’s “The Time Tunnel”. Good stuff. Some of the more fun stuff are the 7 editions of the old Superman series with George Reeves.

That’s even better.
Give out free beer and free skates. Let them drink throughout the game and then have a fan scrimmage on the ice.
Gosh,
I just realized how efficient that would be for me, being both a Yankees and Penguins fan.

One might say a piddling honor. But I thank you just the same.
Bodhi,
I saw a list of players coming back and most everyone asked is attending. The one player they could not get in touch with was Dennis Byrd. They said that he lives in seclusion somewhere.
Gilbert Arenas, Javaris Crittenon both NBA players. Pulled guns on each other aver a gambling debt, not paid by Arenas, according to the NY Post.
This is sooo bizarre, could you imagine Jeter pulling a gun out on Mariano, or Andy pistol whipping Alex? n/t
Of course the NBA Commish is following up.

I am not a big hockey fan but it is pretty amazing to see how they transformed Fenway into an NHL rink.

“..think because command and secondary pitches aren’t nearly as important in that role.”
You wants guys out of the BP walking people?
We already had Bruney and Farnsworth. Any good hitter can sit on a FB and kill it… especially on 2-0, 3-1 counts.
Randy Johnson was an average Pitcher for 5 years because of lack of command and control. Once he got it, he was one of the best of the decade.
“may mean that they have either given up on him as a catcher…”
They will not give up on him as a C because a Catcher who can hit like he can is WAAAAAAAAAY more valuable then the same bat as a DH. Look at Piazza… hugely valuable. Highest paid player in MLB at one time.
The kid is very big ay 6’4 or 6’5. If he grows anymore, he may grow out of the position… but again, unless he is a total butcher with his glove, he will Catch. Even if it’s just for 2 years, until Romine is ready, it’s a big plus.
Posada is not exactly Gold Glove material. He has been below average (especially at blocking the plate and blocking pitches) his entire career…. but hugely valuable to us.
Look at the last 10 years of Yankee rosters and you will find no full time DHes. The most DH ABs in the 2000′s was Giambi… when he was too hurt to play 1B. Next was Matsui, again, when he could no longer play the field. After that, it was a bunch of fill ins and regulars getting a rest day.
I’m not saying Montero WILL definitely be a Catcher, I’m just saying he won’t be moved until the Yanks are 100% sure he is a giant liability behind the plate.

Yeah. That was some fun tv. A few people remember that there were two Lois Lanes on that show and that both later played Lois Lane’s mother Noel Neill in the first movie and Phyllis Coates on “Lois and Clark”.

It looks much better, I think they should consider leaving it a hockey rink!
Anyone elses blood boiling watching the hockey game in fenway !! Just the sight of this crap stadium gets me going !!!…
Man can wait to take on the sox in a few months !!
OldYanksFan, no I don’t want people coming out of the pen walking people. That’s not my point. I said that command and secondary pitches aren’t as critical out of the pen as they are when you are starting and that’s true. Its much easier to throw strikes for a couple of hitters than it is to sustain that for seven innings and you don’t need as many quality pitches when you are seeing hitters only one time.
As for Montero I was agreeing with you. I want them to give him every chance to catch because of what you said, having a catcher that can hiy is a huge advantage over other teams.
Not watching. Do they put little ice skates on the Fenway rats?

Was there that day. Sick in the stomach. But then he had his little “event” in the hospital, and miraculously, he could walk again.
The prayers were answered. Maybe he just can’t deal with the noise of being a former football star.
Yankees made the list of most memorable games of the decade.
-Game 7 Yankees vs Bosawx ALCS 2003. Boone’s game winner of Wakefield.
- Yankees vs Diamondbacks 2001 GM 7 Bases loaded Mo on the mound, Luis Gonzalez hit a blooper over Jeter head, bring in Jay Bell. Mo made the long walk off the mound.
-Yankees vs Bosawx ALCS 2004 GM 4, Ortiz vs Paul Quantrill nuff said!
I did not know that GB. Cool trivia.

Hey GB-7 !
Happy New Year and think of today as the 1st day of a new year minus the cigs. You’re doing good and getting better.
That much more beer money to have at Single A games.
I’m a little late here – but Happy New Year Everyone.
I don’t know about 2 thousand ten vs. twenty ten, but twenty-eight has a very nice ring to it.
Pitchers and catchers is February 14th, isn’t it? Now, that would really be lovely….
