Pinch hitter series announcement

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jan 04, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

It’s become something of a tradition here at the LoHud Yankees Blog, and we want to keep it going.

Sam, Josh and I are looking for guest posts to run later this month. Maybe it’s your take on the Yankees offseason moves, or your expectations for a certainly player next season, or maybe you want to write a few hundred words about Francisco Cervelli. Whatever you have to say, if it works for the blog, we’d like to post it.

Email your ideas to me – a few sentences explaining what you want to write — and we’ll start organizing all of the guest posts into a schedule. Once the schedule is in place, we’ll start letting people know when we need the posts themselves. Please, no more than one proposal per person. It’s not necessarily first come, first serve, so take your time coming up with what you want to write.

We need all proposals by Sunday, January 10. Keep in mind that the actual posts should generally be around 300 words.

    Sox Signed Beltre

Who was that guy that got hammered last year(or the prior) as a pinch hitter? Was his name Phil? Anyone?

I should write a lovely essay on my pretend relationship with Johnny Damon :-)

  5. CR9 January 4th, 2010 at 7:10 pm

    Amazing.

6:03pm: Jon Heyman tweets that Beltre “is close to a deal with the #redsox, si.com has learned.”

    From MLBTR

When the Red Sox are in on a player, or even when the media is keeping things hush hush for their benefit, they end up with the player (sans Tex).

They want someone, it’s like there is no chance any other team will get that player.

And it’s not like they overpay players the way we are forced to.

They hand out chicken scraps for the services of players.

Lowell must be thrilled with Beltre’s signing.

  8. pat January 4th, 2010 at 7:14 pm

Buster_ESPN BOS offer to Beltre is probably in the range of $10 mill. to $10.5 mill. annually, and the offer is expected to include an opt-out clause.

It’s not as if Cano hasn’t had good seasons with rISP. He was .263 in 2008, .290 in 2007 amd .306 in 2006.

    ========

    GB7,
With those numbers, where do you project Cano batting up in the lineup?

    ————————————————————

He’s a little over .300 out of the #6 spot and about .298 in the #5 spot. He’s also a .342 hitter in the #7 spot. Another thing that people ignore. Everyone wants to make sure that Rodriguez has protection behind him. Cano usually had Swisher and Cabrera or Cabrera and Molina this past year and it was even worse in 2008. He can hit and be productive in any of those spots, but, he isn’t going to walk in any spot.

His career numbers in those three spots are almost the same as last year’s. The higher up he gets, the lower his numbers.

He seems to be a little more jumpy at the plate when hitting higher or with runners in scoring position.

Now that they have Beltre, they should not be able to move Lowell unless they pay his entire salary, and they should not receive even a marginal prospect.

They have no leverage with Lowell.

OH! I saw “The Hangover” when it came out over the summer. Not fresh enough in my head for the reference.

“Love” is a Cirque du Soleil show they have at Mirage in Vegas. Its basically crazy dancing and acrobatics all symbolically done to a giant mash of Beatles songs. It was completely visally amazing. My dad saw it first last year, and was so entanced that he gave everyone the Love remix CD for the holidays last year

    Rishi,

BA did a nice story on Tony last month. They seem to be “softening” his stance as a wasted draft pick by the Pirates.

Perhaps they talked to enough baseball people (rather than listening to their own voices) to form a different opinion.

He’s been invited to major league ST and reports on 2/15.

He may get to play in the opening ST game against the Yankees in March.

Well, the city is very beautiful and yet completely trashy at the same time. LOL. I went at a very peak time so it was very crowded. The hotels are amazing. The streets were packed and I wasn’t a giant fan of the whole walking upstairs over bridges to cross the street thing. I also didn’t love the streets lined with cards for call girls (I wasn’t offended or anything, but there were lots of kids around!!!!)

At midnight on NYE, the strip was closed to traffic and everyone stands in the streets like Times Square. Fireworks go off the tops of the hotels (synchronized). It was really beautiful

Do you have a choice? Or is Cablevision the only game in town?

I know if that happened where I live, my choices are Comcast or satellite televsion, which I have no interest in whatsoever. FiOS is supposed to be available soon, and it is in some parts of my town, but I’ve heard very mixed reactions about their service. And that is why I hate the way cable television is set up. You get what you get and there is very little choice. No shopping around within type. You can get the one cable service available, OR the one satellite service available, OR FiOS. But you can’t decide you’d like to have Cablevision if you’re in Comcast territory, for instance. Kind of like when it was Ma Bell or the tin cans.

And you have little leverage as a consumer if they decide not to renew those contracts. I don’t know about you, but those are my go-to networks when there’s nothing else on! :)

  70. blake January 4th, 2010 at 8:03 pm

ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick tweets, “I just heard that Red Sox have talked to the Mets about a Mike Lowell-for-Luis Castillo trade. Not sure how serious it is.” He adds, “Lowell, expendable with Beltre coming to Boston, could play some 1B in NY. And with Castillo gone, Mets could make a play for Orlando Hudson.”

The deal certainly clears an unwanted player for both teams. But while it is easy to see Lowell getting some at-bats for the Mets at first, and even spelling David Wright at third base, where Luis Castillo fits in- given his poor defense at second base, and the existence of Dustin Pedroia- with Boston is harder to understand.

The money would be even in such a deal. Lowell is owed $12MM in 2010, while Castillo is owed $6MM in each of the next two years.

  72. Christina25 January 4th, 2010 at 8:05 pm

    CR9,
I feel bad for Lowell. He is a really nice guy and they should have offered him just two years based on his age. With Bay its a different story. It was his agent who put them in a bad position and they attacked back. You may think that I’m trying to be unbiased now but I have like that always. Just because I like the Red Sox it doesnt mean that I like their moves all the time. Last year I was so upset with the Smoltz and the Penny signings. Especially with Penny. GB, I hear Boston has some fantastic shopping…I should either ask Peter Gammons or Leigh Tex. It’s not all that bad, lol (actually, I love Boston).

    ————————————————————

I like Boston the city, too. Beautiful…historic, It’s the obnoxious people that feel the need to tell you how intelligent they are, all about their money (mosy of which, if they had any wasn’t from anything they did to earn it). The sports fans, who for 75 years only had the Celtics as winners but thought that they invented every sport. There’s also some really outstanding people and a few like Dennis and Ray post here. Not sure how to classify Randy, though. I guess he’s in a league of his own.

Re: – that Crasnick tidbit about the Red Sox unloading Mike Lowell to the Mets for Luis Castillo – I agree, I don’t know what the Sox would want with Castillo. It could only mean that the Sox value Lowell less than even Castillo, whick says a lot. To me, that would mean that they are convinced that Mike Lowell can no longer play. If I were the Mets, I would be very leary of this.

Hope you had a nice time. Where did you stay… did you check out CityCenter?

I stayed at Caesars. I loved the look of the hotel and its location (plus it was comped- always a plus), however I had issues with the service and my room key deactivated itself 4 times in a two day period which severely angered me. I also did not like the casino. It didn’t have very many of the slot machines I like- big problem. Not sure I would stay there again, but I did LOVE the location.

I did briefly check out city center. It looked beautiful. THere was so much to see there, very overwhelming

Yeah, it opened throughout the first half of December. I had last week off from work, and I was going to go – but both my wife and I came down with colds and it threw off our plans.

In terms of scope, it is an amazing accomplishment. To build that much, all in one phase is remarkable. It will probably really hurt some of their own properties, however… like the MGM, Monte Carlo, and Excalibur. It was a pretty big gamble on their part and everyone in town is hoping that it succeeds.

$9mil for Beltre while paying Mike Lowell $12mil means the $ox are paying $21mil to fill their 3rd base position.

$6 mil for Marcos Scutaro while paying $9.5 mil for Julio Lugo to play for the Cardinals means the $ox are paying over $15mil to fill their shortstop position.

So Bo$ton is paying $36mil and all they have to show for it is journeymen Marcos Scutaro and Adrian Beltre. Overpaying for mediocre talent is the kind of stuff the media killed the Yankees for doing. Let’s see how they report on this mess.

    Betsy,

I don’t see where Beltre is an improvement over having Youkalis playing 3rd base. When Marcos Scutaro is an improvement, you know you’re in trouble.

The Red Sox have gone away from the model that made them competitive with the Yankees. They have added low obp, high strikeout hitters like Cameron, Beltre and Scutaro. JD Drew and David Ortiz are in decline. The Red Sox offense is only a shadow of what it used to be. They havent improved at all over last year. Is John Lackey, Marcos Scutaro and Adrian Beltre enough to gain 8 games on the Yankees? I hardly think so.

Really, the choice was Youkilis at 1B and Beltre at 3b, vs. Kotchman and Youkilis. Is going from Kotchman to Beltre worth $9M?

Also, unless they can unload Lowell, he will plug a spot on the bench – and where can they use him? The occasional ph? They obviously feel he can’t play the field anymore, and forget pinch running. Conceivably, he could DH for them, but that’s blocked by Ortiz – who can’t play a position either, and is also declining.

They’re stuck for 2010. They must be hoping for Mauer in 2011, and will be crushed if Minnesota extends him. I really don’t think they’re a realistic destination for Adrian Gonzalez, what could they offer SD for him? Hoyer knows their system, and all it’s worts.

    Betsy,

Lackey is a nice addition to Beckett and Lester, but how else have they improved the pitching? For all the hype, the fact remains that Bucholz pitches to a 1.5 WHIP, just like Dice K does. They are relying on those 2 the same way they did Smoltz and Penny last year. The Red Sox team ERA was 7th in a 14 team league last year. Their WHIP was 8th. Their pitching is decent, but by no means as good as what is written.

For those who care, there’s probably not a Dominican player that hasn’t used the D.R. milkshake ! Know what Pujols was called 2 yrs. before reaching majors ? : Fat Albert ! All of a sudden 1 yr. before coming up he had muscle and not fat ! He did have a weight problem. No more ! Wonder why ?
That’s not to say that there aren’t tons of others, because there are ! These players have spit on the game and all the past stars of yesteryear !
