CC vs. Denzel on Leno

Posted by: Sam Borden - Posted in Misc on Jan 08, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Although it sounds like Jay Leno’s 10 p.m. show has been such a disaster that he’s already going back to 11:30, there was (apparently) a pretty entertaining segment on Thursday night. Leno had Denzel Washington on as a guest and – since Denzel is a Yankees fan – set up a game-show style trivia contest with Washington facing off against CC Sabathia.

Give Washington credit: He knows his Yankees, correctly answering that Yogi Berra endorsed Yoo-Hoo and that Alfonso Soriano holds the record for most strikeouts in a season by a Yankee (CC guessed that it was Reggie Jackson). Check out the clip here.

(For the record, CC says his favorite Denzel movie is “Out of Time.” Mine is probably “Training Day,” though I have a soft spot for “Remember the Titans,” which – random fact alert – had several scenes filmed at a high school right next to my freshman dorm at Emory.)

I have this in my DVR-I can’t wait to watch it when I get home tonight.

Best Denzel movie: I’m torn between Philadelphia and The Pelican Brief

love “Remember the Titans” we have it on permenant DVR

  4. vinny-b (NJ and Granderson - thank you Cashman!) January 8th, 2010 at 3:03 pm

Training Day was too dark for me.

i have to go with Manchurian Candidate. A worthy remake

  5. Rich in NJ January 8th, 2010 at 3:04 pm

Denzel has been a Yankee fan for his entire life. CC has only recently become acquainted with Yankee-ology, so the outcome of the contest was predictable.

    “Man On Fire”

Terrific movie, and he has made many. “American Gangster” is excellent.

  6. vb03 January 8th, 2010 at 3:07 pm

Mine was the more obscure but still excellent John Q.

John Q was excellent. Very ‘real’ character

  9. Rich in NJ January 8th, 2010 at 3:10 pm

I also liked “Inside Man,” and he was very good in the remake of “The Taking of Pelham 123.”

  10. Betsy - Romine wasn't built in a day January 8th, 2010 at 3:11 pm

The only Denzel movie I’ve ever seen is Carbon Copy. He as very young – I think it was made in the late 1970′s, early 1980′s.

  11. vinny-b (NJ and Granderson - thank you Cashman!) January 8th, 2010 at 3:12 pm

off topic: Vlad had better take that 5 mill offer from Texas and run

  12. rodg12 January 8th, 2010 at 3:12 pm

Love a ton of Denzel’s movies. My absolute favorite is a toss-up between Man on Fire and Remember the Titans.

  13. iYankees January 8th, 2010 at 3:13 pm

Gotta go with Fallen. Love that one.

“Inside Man” wins but thats more because of Clive Owen then Denzel

    “Remember the Titans” is 2nd

  17. m January 8th, 2010 at 3:16 pm

    vinny-b,

Err, you mean walk? His legs are shot.

Texas should make him and Damon race. Or have a HR derby.

Denzel grew up in the New York Metro area like a lot of us Yankee fans during the 1960s so he should have remembered those Yogi Yoo-hoo commercials.

  22. Rich in NJ January 8th, 2010 at 3:24 pm

I never liked Yoo-Hoo, but since it was associated with Yogi, I always told my mom that I did so she would buy more.

  23. Carl January 8th, 2010 at 3:25 pm

What if CC won. No plug for Denzel?

  24. rodg12 January 8th, 2010 at 3:28 pm

    HAHAHAHAHA. Love it. :)

  25. murphydog January 8th, 2010 at 3:31 pm

Man On Fire also gets my vote. I was pretty amazed at how good this movie was overall; Denzel rose above some unnecessary, over the top moments, importing honesty and complexity to what could have been a stereo-typed, burned-out action hero character in the hands of a lesser actor. Revenge turned into redemption is not easy, but Denzel’s character pulled it off.

Hey, dude went to Fordham. What can I say? Go Rams!

Best part about Jay Leno to 11:30 is scumbag Red Sox fan Conan O’Brien will be the odd man out according to reports.

Speaking of movies, Finding Forrester is a great movie. Mentions the Yankees repeatedly.

The main character black kid in this movie speaks to Sean Connery, and Sean says he and his brother used to go to YS to watch the games, and were always there for falls.

And the kid says “that’s a lot of falls.” Yaaa!

There was a lot of talk at the time this movie was released about possibly winning Oscars, other awards, but it never materialized….

    Now I know why!

  30. crawdaddy January 8th, 2010 at 3:36 pm

By the way, there’s been talk of a sequel to Inside Man.

No. You’re mixing him up with Penny Marshall.

Right, which means he grew up very close to Yankee Stadium.

    Yup. Bronx/Yonkers border.

  37. Nick in SF January 8th, 2010 at 3:43 pm

I would trust a sequal to Inside Man more if they had Penny Marshall direct it. She has that winning light touch!

  38. CR9 January 8th, 2010 at 3:44 pm

I’ve read of there being a sequel to Taken.

  39. saucY January 8th, 2010 at 3:44 pm

i’ll put in my vote for “American Gangster”, though i haven’t seen all too many Denzel movies…

  40. Phil the Thrill January 8th, 2010 at 3:44 pm

Conan’s an old friend of mine and not much of a sports fan at all. I’ve worked for Leno and he was nice enough to do my show. NBC seems to have made some big mistakes here.

  41. crawdaddy January 8th, 2010 at 3:45 pm

Ken Singleton used to tell stories how he and his buddies would come down to the old ballyard in the Bronx and watch Mick and the guys.

  42. Phil the Thrill January 8th, 2010 at 3:45 pm

    and Yoo-Hoo rocked!

  43. Nick in SF January 8th, 2010 at 3:46 pm

Taken…. good grief, a movie that made even less sense than Inside Man!

  44. Chad Jennings January 8th, 2010 at 3:48 pm

    Favorite Denzel movie: Fallen.

Also, I don’t really care for Leno — Letterman and Conan for me — but that clip is pretty good. Denzel knows his stuff, and Sabathia always comes across as super cool. Even on a stage with Denzel.

  45. saucY January 8th, 2010 at 3:48 pm

and Conan is light years better than Leno…

  46. Patrick January 8th, 2010 at 3:50 pm

    Taken from the last thread,

“Modern baseball is more about stats and matchups than ever. It’s the way the game is now. Look at all the new stats that people spew in here. OPS, OPS+, defensive ratings, WAR… Is it right? Who can say? But most managers use ‘the book’ in some form or fashion.”

You missed my point. “The Book” I’m referring to is the Tony LaRussa style of managing. I like Girardi’s use of statistics to determine matchups, lineups, etc. However he mostly uses the classic style of managing when it comes to bullpen management, etc.

  47. CountryClub January 8th, 2010 at 3:53 pm

Nobody else has mentioned it (and it’s not my favorite from him), but Philadelphia was a good flick.

  48. Patrick January 8th, 2010 at 3:55 pm

All the more reason to like Denzel. He is one talented man. I wish Leno would go back to his old time slot. The show worked better. I also wish Conan would not only go back to his old slot, but move back to NY too. Besides Max Weinberg, Conan’s band has a couple of guys who were active in the NY music scene. Bass player Mike Merrit and guitarist Jimmy Vivino played in a lot of backup bands, especially for the great Al Kooper. The music scene misses them.

  56. S.o.S. January 8th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Dei ja vu was a very under rated movie. I thought it was one of his best. Remember the Titans my favorite.
    Gangster in the top 5

  72. L to the 2nd January 8th, 2010 at 4:09 pm

NBC is not putting Leno back at Tonight, but they royally screwed up here.

They gave up a coveted 10 p.m. time slot to a guy that, other than the “Headlines” segment, really isn’t that funny.

And now they’re going to “punish” Conan by pushing him back to midnight?

Wouldn’t be surprised if one of them bolts for ABC or Fox

How will it end? I truly have no clue, but I’m sure they have some sort of epic conclusion planned, nothing like the Sopranos.

I do NOT think the event that ended season 5 will make everything that happened previously go away… that would be a huge mess. But… well, I don’t know.

I do think there will be a gazillion little unanswered questions and inconsistancies when it’s all over. Thank goodness we have baseball for tidy conclusions!

were i to be watching tv at the time these people are on tv latenights, it would not even occur to me to turn them on, i really havent watched a tv talk show since donahue went off the air.

i watched the leno segment with denzell and cc from the link and i have to say that there was no humor in it at all. and the questions were moron-level. give denzel credit for choosing soriano when only 3 choices were given and cc had already chosen a wrong one? im no math major but the odds are pretty good there, no?

    My top 5
    Decaprio
    Depp(under rated as an actor)
    Dinero
    Hanks
    Washington

DiCaprio has Bar Refaeli, so he gets some points for that.

Malcom X may have been his best performance.

Game 3 of the 2009 ALDS on MLB tv right now. I forgot the Sox had such a commanding lead in that game.

The Sox pen is about to implode if you’re interested.

And supermarket tabloids seem to have an odd way of being right sometimes. (eg- Did you hear Tiger Woods had an affair?)

That said, if Damon called Cash and said he really wanted to comeback, just fit me in the budget, I think he could be re-signed, but that has not been Damon’s way of doing things in his career. But maybe he will.

“Malcom X may have been his best performance.”

I agree. This is my fave Denzel movie.

As for the mess that NBC has made, they have no one to blame but themselves. They should have just let Leno ride off into the sunset. The guy is horrible; always has been. It’s strange though – his non Tonight Show stand-up stuff is actually pretty good.

Thank God the LOST premiere has been saved. I was about to go ballistic if it got pre-empted.

    ___

former managers go back to bench coaches or lower all the time. the yankees have had many of them. Bowa, Pena, Girardi just in the recent few years.

  115. blake January 8th, 2010 at 5:02 pm

Looks like Vlad is going to Texas for around 5 million plus incentives.

when is the last time damon even got an offer?

  117. blake January 8th, 2010 at 5:05 pm

“when is the last time damon even got an offer?”

2/14 by the Yankees is the only one I’ve heard of.

Let me clarify. Conan going back to 12:35 would be like the Yankees rehiring Torre and asking Girardi to be his bench coach.

  119. Yankee Trader January 8th, 2010 at 5:15 pm

Damon’s offer was predicated on him being a DH, a window that closed rapidly when Johnson accepted the Yankee offer.

However I do hope they can bring him back for another year. He hits lefties better than the rest of the righty FA options out there, except maybe Reed Johnson.

Damon, however will need to be the one to approach the Yankees about still willing to come back.

Alfonso is hands down the best player in the major leagues.

even though i think the world of damon, i just dont think its a good situation to have a guy come back after begging and taking about 1/4 or less of what he was seeking.

i think its time to say goodbye and move on.

  122. Doreen January 8th, 2010 at 5:19 pm

Denzel Washington. One of the few actors/actresses whose movies I will watch just because they’re in them.

I don’t watch Leno or Conan and only sporadically do I watch Letterman. Not a fan of late night tv. I depend on YouTube clips to see things like the Yankees on Letterman. :?

I spent the last 6 hours taking down Christmas. And I still have one more tree to take down. I’m so tired.

    Where does the time go??????????????

  126. MTU January 8th, 2010 at 5:23 pm

Dont know if this already been posted (Sorry if has):

“As the Aroldis Chapman sweepstakes continue, at least one outlet is reporting that the Blue Jays have made the left-hander a considerable offer. Jorge Ebro of El Nuevo Herald reports that the Jays offered Chapman a $23MM deal (click here for the Miami-based paper’s original Spanish story and here for some Drunk Jays Fans analysis).”

Blue Jays have decent shot at Arolidis Chapman after bidding $20 mil. Nationals, Marlins, A’s, Red Sox, Angels also may be players.

I can’t believe he’s going to go to the Jays, but they have money and I guess they’ll probably promise him a spot in the rotation within the next year or so. I really don’t see how any well-run organization can make that promise, but so be it. Anthopolous wasn’t kidding when he said that they were going after any and every IFA. The Jays are flush with $$$?
