Mostly quiet Sunday

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jan 10, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

I’m having some Internet access issues today, so this brief message is brought to you by the iPhone.

The good news is there doesn’t seem to be a lot of Yankees news happening other than ongoing rumors of interest in bringing back Jerry Hairston Jr. As we’ve discussed, Hairston makes a lot of sense, I only wonder if he’s being viewed as a utility man or if he might be the right-handed outfielder Brian Cashman is after.

The bad news is that Aroldis Chapman seems to be off the market, having reportedly signed with an unknown National League team. So much for those Angels and Blue Jays rumors.

I’m not so sure the Chapman signing is bad news for the Yankees.

  2. crawdaddy January 10th, 2010 at 2:07 pm

    Cashman,

You’re really screwing up not getting Willie Bloomquist. What a major disappointment you’ve been this offseason.

  3. Chad Jennings January 10th, 2010 at 2:08 pm

Actually, I agree. That seems to be a lot of money for a raw, young arm. He’d be nice to have in the system, but maybe not at that price.

  4. Hoffa January 10th, 2010 at 2:10 pm

“You’re really screwing up not getting Willie Bloomquist. What a major disappointment you’ve been this offseason.”

    I assume you’re joking…?

  5. thisguy January 10th, 2010 at 2:11 pm

chances are he will only get a year and a half in the minors…

…not sure if that’ll be enough from what we all have read…but he obviously has good enough stuff if teams are willing to throw that kind of money at him…

…then again…some teams are really stupid.

  6. blake January 10th, 2010 at 2:12 pm

So the Reds will sign Chapman for 30 million, will develop him, and then if he becomes a stud they will lose him to free agency once he becomes good. I don’t understand why a small market team would take such a risk.

bold prediction: the yankees will sign Hairston for 1.5-2 million dollars, sign Damon for 6 million + incentives with an option for a 2nd year, them they will trade Gaudin to recover a little payroll.

  7. Carl January 10th, 2010 at 2:12 pm

    30 million…wow

  8. RM January 10th, 2010 at 2:19 pm

Its a 5 year deal. The Reds are in a weak division (unless St Louis finds lots of money somewhere) so they have a window of opportunity to win the division if they can put together a good pitching staff sometime within the next 5 years. Chapman for 6 Milllion a year could be a tremendous bargin in 4 or 5 years

  9. Nick in SF January 10th, 2010 at 2:20 pm

Hey, Randy Moss finally did something!

  10. Hey Kelvin says January 10th, 2010 at 2:20 pm

Chapman isn’t worth that 30 mill..

Can anyone fill me in, if out of those five years he has to do service time or does that 5 years include his minor league team, so he will only be with the team that signs him about three or four years depending on how fast he develops?

  11. Dr Mustard January 10th, 2010 at 2:21 pm

How is it bad news that Chapman is off the market….Cashman was not making that mistake again

    Chapman will be a flop ( Igawa 2.0 )

  12. Betsy - Romine wasn't built in a day January 10th, 2010 at 2:23 pm

If Chapman goes to the Reds, how is that bad news? Maybe for him as he could be ruined by Dusty Baker.

  13. GreenBeret7 January 10th, 2010 at 2:27 pm

MLB-Rumors-R-us has Chapman going to an NL Central team, and probably the Reds. How appropriate that he’ll continue to wear Commie Red.

  14. RM January 10th, 2010 at 2:27 pm

Details are not clear yet but I suspect he want to be on the 40 man roster from day 1 and they have 5 seasons includung both minor league and major league development time. I expect they will bring him up to the majors to learn there very quickly if he shows anything at all in the minors.

  15. Hey Kelvin says January 10th, 2010 at 2:28 pm

I hope it includes minor league service time, if it doesn’t this is horrible.

Chapman was the hot name on the blog when he defected.

I would say that his workouts were underwhelming.

The velocity was a bit exaggerated, control not there yet, and neither are the secondary pitches.

None of this is to say he won’t develop. But at that money, you need almost immediate impact.

If I had to bet, I’m thinking Oliver Perez. Glad NYY passed.

  19. haiku-man January 10th, 2010 at 2:32 pm

NL Central Cards wanted him also. They need back of the rotation help and bullpen.

  20. CR9 January 10th, 2010 at 2:32 pm

    Good luck to Chapman.

Aside from not staying in bounds to keep the time running by McGahee and the punting unit not running the play clock to 1, it looks as if the Ravens weathered the referee-created storm nicely and rebounded well.

  21. GreenBeret7 January 10th, 2010 at 2:33 pm

Not that he has the best prediction track record, but, this is Olney’s damon update (though, I suspect this is really from Erica).

•Within his Sunday blog entry, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney addresses the persistent rumors about a potential reunion for Johnny Damon and the Yankees. Olney says that a few executives around the league “are absolutely convinced” that Damon will end up in the Bronx, but that it would require Damon significantly lowering his asking price and initiating contact with the Yanks.

The Pats game is far from over. A 17 point halftime lead is nothing.

  29. blake January 10th, 2010 at 2:41 pm

If the Yankees re-sign Damon then maybe they can get him to workout with Jeters trainer who apparently holds the secret to improved defense in your mid-30s.

  32. LF January 10th, 2010 at 2:47 pm

i don’t think the Yanks resign Damon, althought I’m not really sure if there is any other team that will pick him up. Let him walk – we can survive with a young, speedy LF like Gardner.

  33. vinny-b (NJ and Granderson - thank you Cashman!) January 10th, 2010 at 2:48 pm

Jeters trainer said Jeter was the most focused and driven athlete he’s worked with. Jeter was self motivated and did endless reps of what he needed to do, until he got the desired result. Damon doesn’t have 2 yrs to wait for results.

Torre never shared with Jeter the front office had, when told he got busy.

  35. blake January 10th, 2010 at 2:50 pm

Brady is a great QB but this year has proven to me once and for all that he’s not in Mannings class. Brady was a contributor to the 4 super bowls but really the coach and their defense was the main reason they won them.

Everything the Colts win is and always has been because of their quarterback.

  36. george January 10th, 2010 at 2:54 pm

“if he [Hairston] might be the right-handed outfielder Brian Cashman is after”

Hairston’s a good sign as the utility player; his versatility is valuable in an era of 12-man pitching staffs. he’s ok to play once every week or so.

but signing him as a semi-regular would lead to a level of productivity similar to what Tony Womack provided in his brilliant OF Yankee career.

  37. blake January 10th, 2010 at 2:55 pm

Damon enjoy 27. I was half joking when I said that but I do think Damon could get back to respectability defensively with a little extra work and health. He’s never going to throw well but he can still run plenty good enough to play a descent LF.

  43. Nick in SF January 10th, 2010 at 3:00 pm

I’m still kind of hoping the Patsies can get within 3 by the end of the game…for entertainment purposes only.

  44. blake January 10th, 2010 at 3:03 pm

Nah I wouldn’t go that far. Brady is a really good QB but when the Pats were winning super bowls they had a dominating defense and that was the main reason they won them. Brady deserves credit for his part in those titles but the comparisions of him to Peyton and some analysts still picking Brady over Manning is ridiculous.

Peyton Manning is already the greatest QB that’s ever played and by the time his career is over I don’t think it will even be arguable. JMO.

Answer: Kyle Matthew Lohse, pitcher St Louis Cardinals

  48. raymagnetic January 10th, 2010 at 3:17 pm

    Vinny,

I’m not looking at the game. I just glanced at the score earlier, and a 17 point halftime lead isn’t insurmountable in my book. Teams overcome 17 point halftime leads all the time, especially at home.

    Damon enjoy 27,

    What do I win?

  49. haiku-man January 10th, 2010 at 3:17 pm

Chapman to the Reds I’m so happy. He goes to a nothing team, stays out of the AL East. At his age it’s about money, he’ll still have time to develop.

QUESTION, HOW TO YOU SIT WITH Cashman during a postseason game, watching the Yankees win in their new stadium, and not want to be apart of a winner, AND A FIRST CLASS OPERATION?

I wonder if anybody has ever approached Damon about his throwing or has it been a pointless thing throughout his career ?
Last year, Swisher started out looking less than great but he sought out pitching coach Dave Eiland and a new grip gave him more on his outfield throws.

  53. Nick in SF January 10th, 2010 at 3:26 pm

I have no idea what the Yankees offered or would offer, but if you’re Chapman and can get more money now plus be in a position to get to your next contract sooner, isn’t that the better way to go?

  54. Paco Dooley January 10th, 2010 at 3:26 pm

Not really a good deal for the Reds. For a weathly team like the Yanks or Red Sox it makes sense since it is a high risk (i.e.,hight cost) high reward situation, where the investment could pay off huge or could be a total bust. But for a small market team it seems like a bad idea since they could use that money in many other ways. I suppose the idea is that they are unlikely to compete for top end major-league ready talent, so they can take a gamble on a possible star for a lower than possible market price.

  55. Ham Fighters January 10th, 2010 at 3:27 pm

i think its safe to assume the yankees didnt offer anything close to $30M. so the question should be how many millions of dollars does a guy want to give up to be on one team above all others. what if the yankees offered 3/$15, would u turn down half of a guaranteed $30M to join the yankees organization?

  56. Damon enjoy 27....think 28 January 10th, 2010 at 3:29 pm

Could you imagine the Yankees giving 30m to Chapman unproven, and Damon being asked to take a pay cut, not good?

  57. Nick in SF January 10th, 2010 at 3:36 pm

That really confused me…the ref indicated that the challenge was deemed “successful” because it resulted in a first down.

But even before the measurement, the challenge had resulted in the balled being spotted at the 6 instead of the 7. So wasn’t that already a successful challenge?

guy, you have to get over this damon thing. the yankees are going to make offers to players based on that player’s worth to them. they cant be worried about what johnny damon (no longer employed by the team) will think about what another guy got.

also, damon is not being asked to take a pay cut. his contract expired, there is no obligation to pay him anything going forward, so nobody is cutting his pay. he is free to go do whatever he wants for any employer in the world at whatever payrate he can negotiate.

he is a client of scott ‘take no prisoner’s boras, who will squeeze every last nickel out of any possible employer at any given time without the slightest amount of regret about how that contract will effect any other player or team. why would the yankees give a second’s thought to what johnny or his agent think about any offer to anybody else?

I was thinking more along the lines of being fortunate that they got him…not as pure luck. He’s a fine, young player. It will be interesting to see if he keeps improving over the next 3-4 years. Of course, he would have been much better in pinstripes.

  72. blake January 10th, 2010 at 4:05 pm

I don’t think its a given that Damkn would have an attitude problem. He watched Andy get the same treatment last year and saw how he handled it professionally so that could set an example for him. Also he would be playing for future contracts so I doubt it would affect his performance. 90. Paco Dooley January 10th, 2010 at 4:21 pm

“would u turn down half of a guaranteed $30M to join the yankees organization?”

No way. I’m a life-long Yankees fan and as die hard as they get, plus all of my family is in NY, but I would take the £30m to play for any team over £15 from the Yanks. He doesn’t know if he’ll ever make it out of the minors and he has £30m that is his regardless. He’ll still be a very young man at the end of the contract, and if he ends up as an ace, he’ll get a huge contract. But if he fails, he’ll fail as a very weathly man. Not a bad deal, and not a deal you can turn down to play for any particular team.

I love that the majority of Yankee fans want to spend 30 mill on a project that will take time to develop, but in the same breath want to move our 23 and 24 yr olds into the bullpen immediately because they struggle at a young age. Mind boggling.

Well, me being the ultimate “glass half full fan” ….
I’m always excited as the season begins. But, I must admit, it has been a fun off-season so far and nice to know that there are now people in charge that have a plan and aren’t afraid to execute it.

Still gotta play the games though ….

    so, Hurry up April!

the mariners finished 8 games over .500, 12 games behind in the west and now all of a sudden they are some kind of model franshise / dynasty in the making.
i have a question though, are they as good as the indian’s dynasty in the making of 2 years ago?

True they only finished 3rd in the ALW…
but they won 85 games in ’09 – a 24 game improvement. While I’m certainly not ready to crown them a dynasty by any means, it’s a bit more than baby steps.

As a Mariner fan, I’m just glad that good ship appears to be headed in the right direction.

I know who they’ve signed, at least most of them. They have some others they were working on both Cuban defectors and kids form the DR and Venezuela. They haven’t announced them yet. And for some, like Arredondo, who they signed on 7/2 but had the deal cancelled when his true age came out. They were just waiting for his suspension to re-sign him for less money under the new name Perez. They were also looking at some SS’s including a kid named Yan Carlos Batista, as well as some more pitching, including a Cuban righty whose name I think was Soto, who also hits 100 on the gun. I just want to see which ones they landed.

I don’t get the agita about the Yankees deciding not to spend $30 million on a pitcher who they obviously liked a lot, but who they also thought was going to require time to refine his game. The kid wants to get to the majors as quickly as possible- his timeframe does not jibe with the Yankees, or likely the Sox as well. How can these teams promise him anything? They’d be looking out for his best professional interests by taking their time with him…….not to mention their own interests. The Reds don’t exactly have a great track record when it comes to developing pitchers. The Yankees had their reasons for not pursuing Chapman that strongly and until we find out what the Hendricks brothers were demanding, I will not criticize them. In fact, I won’t criticize them anyway as they know more about this kid than I do.

I seriously doubt Damon is going to crawl on his hands and knees to come back. He’s not getting more (and probably he’d get less) than $7 million a year from the Yankees and I’d be shocked if he got more than 1 year.
