Looking for an A-Rod $ouvenir?
So, apparently the ball that Alex Rodriguez hit for his 500th home run will be auctioned off online.
SCP Auctions said bidding will begin Jan. 20 for the ball recovered by a college student at the old Yankee Stadium when A-Rod hit No. 500 on Aug. 4, 2007. You might recall that it was a screamer off KC’s Kyle Davies.
SCP also sold the balls Barry Bonds hit for his 755th and 756th home runs; No. 756 went for $752,467. If that seems insane to you, consider that Mark McGwire’s 70th home run run ball from 1998 sold for $3 million at auction. Wonder how much it’s worth now?

Whoever bought McGwire’s ball has to be hating life even more than when Bonds hit 73. Oh man.
I want to road trip down to ST this year. I have a nephew and my sister (Red Sox fan) is trying to convert her poor innocent defenseless son.
He was born in 2008.
I have a 2009 inaugural season ball that I want to try to get Jeter to sign.
I want to give it to my nephew ‘Gage’ and hopefully get to him before it’s too late.
I am – by far – his coolest uncle. Uncle Bret.
So what are my chances of inking Jeter’s sig for my baby nephew?

Bret-you are definitely a cool uncle. I’m very jealous you’re going down to ST!
If you take out the games Sabathia lost last year then he was 19-0.

I do not care what McGwire did anyways, but watching him with Bob Ley, he was all smiles and he was gleaming….

I think we spent $19 on a Douglas fir (better smell than the Noble).
Wow that’s a good price.
Was if Christina (Al Leiter’s bull pen catcher) that went to Spring training last year?

Another interesting fact: If you take out Phil Coke’s 2 IP in the postseason against the Phillies, he is a shutdown lefty in the playoffs that we should have never let go!
You can’t cherry pick stats.

Which one is it. G grand parent or just grandparent. Which ever one it is, you still have the carde blanch to use the whip if needed.
We were at the game when A Rod hit his 500th. If my wife really loved me she would sell her car and buy me the ball. It’s a short walk to work for her. She shouldn’t mind.
I think Roger Maris’s 61st ball will become more and more valuable, don’t you think? However, my guess is that it belongs to the Hall of Fame by now. So does Roger.
Can i get something of my chest? I saw the girl that Jeter is marrying. Is it just me or did he forget that he owned Maxim? She isnt all that IMO. Must have a great personality. I guess when you Jeter, extremely hot looks aint no big thing but a chicken wing. Thoughts?

I was listening to the radio when A-Rod hit that homerun. That was probably the first time in history, John Sterling did not get excited when the ball was hit off the bat. I think he thought it was a foul ball. He seemed genuinely surprised when it cleared the fence for a homerun

It sounds like you get to see a lot of good games.
We got to see Arod hit his 450, but it was in Toronto.

Marlins firmly asked to spend more on players
By Benjamin Kabak in News. Tags: Business of Baseball · Comments (74) ·
In New York, the Yankees are used to being on top. The team has won more World Series than any other in baseball history, and they’ve done so by spending more money than everyone else. In fact, in the decade that just ended, the Yanks spent $1.685 billion to reach the playoffs nine times, appear in the World Series four times and win the trophy twice.
Elsewhere, teams do not enjoy widespread wealth. They play in metropolitan markets with fewer people and a lesser television audience. They aren’t world-renown brands or international symbols of success. Many of the teams scrape by economically. They take advantage of baseball’s generous revenue sharing system to help fund the product on the field while owners struggle to break even or make a profit. And then we have the Marlins.
The Florida Marlins, purchased by Jeffrey Loria with help from MLB in a three-way deal that saw the Expos land in the hands of baseball and the Red Sox in the lap of John Henry, are among baseball’s most successful teams. They have never lost a playoff series; they’ve won two World Series titles since 1993; they are the game’s top profit-maker; and they have the city of Miami building them a stadium. Yet, all is not well in the state of Florida (shocking, I know).
As we covered briefly in the spring, the Marlins pocketed over $40 million in 2008 and probably did so again in 2009. Despite average just 18,770 fans per game, second worst in the Majors, the team is shoveling in the dough, largely through revenue sharing payments. By some accounts, the Marlins have now earned more money from MLB’s revenue sharing pot than Loria paid to buy the team in 2002. Today, this profitable house of cards Loria built nearly came crashing yesterday.
The fun started in the morning with a Clark Spencer article in the Miami Herald. Spencer reported that officials with both the Commissioner’s Office and the MLB Players Association were urging the Marlins to spend more money. According to Spencer, some unconfirmed reports claim that the Marlins, with a 2008 payroll of $27 million, took in $35 million in revenue sharing payments alone. Technically, then, all of the revenue sharing money was going to the on-field product, as mandated by the Collective Bargaining Agreement, but every other revenue dollar generated by the team was pure profit.
Later in the day, the MLBPA, MLB and the Marlins announced a semi-confidential agreement that nearly mandates the Marlins to spend more money on player contracts. Michael Weiner, the new executive director of the PA, issued a statement:
“In response to our concerns that revenue sharing proceeds have not been used as required, the Marlins have assured the Union and the Commissioner’s Office that they plan to use such proceeds to increase player payroll annually as they move toward the opening of their new ballpark. Today’s agreement, which covers the period 2010 through 2012, calls for ongoing communication among the Marlins, the Commissioner’s Office and the Union as the Marlins proceed with that plan. It also permits, after consultation among all parties, adjustments in the Marlins’ plan to respond to unforeseen developments, and calls for arbitral intervention if disagreements arise. We greatly appreciate the willingness of the Commissioner’s Office and the Marlins to engage with us and ensure that all terms of the Basic Agreement are met.”
The Marlins added their two cents. “The Marlins have consistently made every effort to put the best product on the field and our record supports the fact that we have been successful in that regard,” team president David Samson said. “Throughout the discussions, the Marlins maintained that there had been no violation of the Basic Agreement at any time. While we know that the Marlins will always comply with the Basic Agreement, we were happy to work cooperatively with the Union and the Commissioner’s Office on this matter.”
Samson’s statement is very telling, and it highlights the complicated economics of the situation. On the one hand, the Florida Marlins are very adept at building a very good team for little amount of money. As TSJC said earlier tonight, the Marlins have simply decided not to spend on players after free agency and instead have built a farm system where they can get top talent on the field for cheap. They won 87 games last year and weren’t eliminated from the playoff hunt until the end of September with a $38 million payroll. They pay approximately $436,700 per win while the Yankees paid over $2 million per way last year.
On the other hand, the Marlins barely make an effort to supplement revenue sharing viz-a-viz their payroll. If Loria and Co. bit into their profits and spent another $15-$20 million on the field, Larry Beinfest could probably build a playoff team, and the Front Office would see added revenues from playoff games and a pennant race. In fact, it might not make economic sense for the team to be so stingy with its money. It’s hard though to question the Marlins’ own brand of efficient team building.
And so we arrive at the question of the hour: What does this has have to do with the Yankees? The Yankees are the game’s number one payer of revenue sharing funds. Maybe the team, if it has to dole out some dollars, doesn’t want its opponents to put a product on the field that is too superior. After all, the Yanks have suffered through a World Series defeat at the hands of a Marlins team with a $63 million payroll.
But beyond that seemingly superficial reason, the Yankees and the Red Sox and the Mets and the Dodgers and the other big spenders should fear a salary floor. If the Marlins are forced to spend, who is to say that they will spend wisely? Nothing is stopping the Marlins from fulfilling their MLBPA-mandated payroll quota by signing some utility player to an overinflated contract and sticking him on the bench. That is, after all, what the union should want. As these role players make more money, though, the salary ramifications echo up to the top of the food chain. Suddenly, top-flight players can demand even more money, and everyone suffers.
Right now, it’s far too early to know how this move will pay out, but it’s an opening salvo in a war that will erupt between the haves and have-nots when the CBA expires in December 2011. Big-market teams shouldn’t see other owners pocketing the revenue-sharing profits, but enforced spending isn’t the answer. As baseball steps nearer to this abyss, the economics of it all could get very, very interesting.

As for actual content – I hate the idea that MLB is forcing the Marlins to spend more. It’s absurd.
Minka Kelly has an avg face but a terrific body. Rent the 2nd season of Friday Night Lights.
Plus, those marriage rumors appear to be bogus.
Patrick,
It’s part of the collective bargaining agreement. So, it’s not absurd at all. They are taking money that they’re supposed to be earmarking for the team and they’re pocketing it. I’m sure they’re not the only ones, but they appear to be the most obvious.

Jeter is quite approachable and down to earth. If you ever come across him outside of the game. I met him once in the Westchester Mall in White Plains. He was shopping at Brookstones by himself and I went up to him shaked his hand and chatted with him a bit. I was kinda star struck cause this guy is a legend to us Yankee fans. One of the few things I remember asking him was what he thought about A-Rod’s comments about him on that SI article. his was a few months after A-Rod signing with Texas. He said, and I quote “He talks alot of sh&t” I even had a pic taken with him. That same picture was later signed by Jeter with help from Lou Cucuzza the Yanks equipment manager.

lol, wasnt there a situation a couple years back of a person here claiming they saw Jeter and Posada at starbucks and that Jeter held their baby? Everyone wanted proof. Camera phone wasnt working at the time. That and the Joba in the Christmas interview(fran and ??, what were the security guards wearing? Weird time to go into a meeting) were absolutely a riot.
My wife and I were at the ARod 500th game too. We live about 400 miles away and she bought the tix way back in March. We only made it to 2 games that year. We had no idea we’d picked tix for such an exciting game. The night before we were rooting for ARod to NOT hit the HR! We sat down the 3B line. Most people were standing, but I don’t think too many people thought he’d hit it right away. ARod swung at the first pitch, something he doesn’t often do. I remember he hit it so high it didn’t look like it would carry. Then it was a question of if it would hook foul. I have a photo from the game at my desk. ARod is just crossing the plate, he’s pointing to the crowd and the dugout is spilled onto the field to congratulate him. Boras was there too. Great memories!
CountryClub,
I refuse to read bru’s wall of text so maybe you can answer my question. Does the CBA specify how that money can be spent? Does it have to go directly into payroll or can it be spent in other areas like the minor leagues, scouting, etc? If the latter is true then I’m fine with MLB telling them to spend more. If the money must be invested in the payroll, I don’t like it.
Off topic:
Anyone criticizing Minka Kelly’s looks should have to post a picture of the last girl they hooked up with.

I don’t know man. I think Minka is quite pretty and definitely cute. She also seems to have a really down to earth and nice attitude from everything I hear about her. Sure I guess she isn’t Jessica Alba knockout…but as you said….Jeter’s been there and done that.
Any thoughts on whether Alex himself will buy his 500th ball? Perhaps through a third party? Didn’t he want it originally when he hit it?
That would be one former comic book artist turned “Spawn” creator – Tood MacFarlane. He blew his entire savings to buy it too from stories I heard from former employees. He was never really regarded as a smart fella.
Sorry, S.o.S. It was sometime just before the PS and some idiot was trying to one-up everybody on who they saw.
“If Hughes can get to at least 140 innings this yr when you add up AAA, pen in majors and hopefully the playoffs, he’ll be ready to be the #5 starter in 2011. His cap would be around 175+ innings for 2011 and that’s plenty for a #5.”
Some of you people aren’t thinking this through clearly. I get the (flawed) internal logic of it – people want to see a uncapped Phil Hughes as a starter in 2011. But the trade-off isn’t logical.
Hughes – if used in a 1996 Rivera type role, can get around 90-100 innings in 2010, definitely if you count the post-season (I believe Rivera had 1008 in ‘96, regular season only).
That means if he’s in the rotation in 2011, he can pitch maybe 120-130 innings (I’ll be conservative)
In your scenario, you want him to spend the first half in AAA so he can pitch 175 innings in 2011… that’s 45-50 more
innings.
In other words, you’re having him pitch for Scranton in April-July instead of the Yankees to he can pitch 45 MORE innings in 2011, in a best case scenario where he’s healthy and effective all or most of the year.
That’s DEFERRING, not ADDING or GAINING, because he won’t be pitching 40+ innings for the Yankees in the first half of 2010.
That’s like a net gain of 10 inning for YANKEES in total over 2010-2011.
That’s 40 innings less of Phil Hughes in 2010 for 50 more innings of Phil Hughes in 2011.
He’ll pitch roughly the same amount of innings FOR THE YANKEES over the next two seasons in either scenario. But in the AAA scenario, he’ll help the Yankees LESS.
This is simple math, people.

I was in the comic business and it was all over the place when he did Todd bought it. Most of the commentary was “What an idiot” for dumping $3 mil on a baseball. Todd McFarlane emptied his savings for it and literally lost it all when Bonds did his thing 3 years later. Genius he is not.
So I guess he likes brunettes…

What are you packing? If you’re Roger from Amsterdam, you might not get that “loaded” question.
Alex should hope he price of #500 stays low. It will help with the negotiations to get #600 and #700 back from whoever catches it.
Female opinion but Miss Minka is attractive. More cute in the girl next door kind of way than some of Derek’s previous Maxim affiliations. Her voice reminds me of baby talk though and that would get on my nerves.

Remember No Name Band at Insomnia Bar(late night)
This reminded me of when I used to seriously collect baseball cards.
At one point I had somewhere around 300 mint condition Mark McGwire U.S. Olympic Team cards which was technically his rookie card in collecting circles. I would buy boxes of cards incessantly trying to get all the US Olympic Team cards in the late 80′s.
The during the early mid 90′s I would basically sell off these McGwire cards for cash whenever I needed beer/video game money in college or just needed money.
I remember someone telling me I was being stupid for selling them since they were going to be worth enough to buy me a house someday.
Today, I’m thankful for the fact that Mark McGwire rookie cards bought me beer, video games and other things I enjoyed.
I still have about 25 of them left. I haven’t checked in years to see what they are worth. I’m sure it’s not much.

Wow…Really…nice…set…of………….thumbs
As for the anti-Minka forces out there… the girl is gorgeous. Seriously, is there some SAbR (Society for American Babe Research) “appearance” metric that allows objective, apples-to-apples comparisons of beautiful?
So the complaint would be that Minka Kelly is only a 99.999 out of a perfect 100? C’mon. She’s gorgeous by any measure. (Full disclosure: By my proprietary appearance metric, Mrs. Dog has a perfect score. What puts her over the top is that when she curses at me in Spanish I still don’t quite understand what she’ saying. She’s beautiful when she’s angry).
When it comes to getting married, Jeter has my blessing whoever the lucky woman is. Some say Jetes is the most “aware” ballplayer in the game today. See, e.g., The Flip. Something tells me he’s just as “aware” when it comes to deciding to get married. If it’s for real I wish them all the best.
I would give Minka my thumbs up

Murphydog,
Your wife yells at you in Spanish too?
I think Minka’s gorgeous as well. She doesn’t flaunt it like others. Not a lot of make up and such. That’s hot IMO.
Minka’s a hottie who seems very low maintenance. All I know is Jeter must really be into her. Don’t recall any of the other girls ever hanging with Jeter’s family at games/going down onto the field with him…
pat,
megan fox is famous for her ‘toe thumbs’. amongst other things.
10-20k maybe. The ball has broken no records except maybe the youngest player to reach that (I think?). But the steroids admission cancels that out. It’s going to sell for more than it’s worth but it’s not going to be anywhere near those kind of numbers or probably not even near what Arod makes in a day.
How about Doutzen Kroes?

Absolutely!
I do recall many, many, many gorgeous women in Amsterdam.
And the “working girls” as well. (realizing that many are probably foreign born though)
It’s quite remarkable.
Left for a little while and see that the Minka talk is still alive and kickin. No one is saying Minka is a dog. Just that compared to the super models that Jetes been with. Shes not the hottest. No ones kicking her out of bed or bagging her. I have to see that show F.N.L. so that i can get a better idea about her thumbs and toes. Honestly i have only seen pictures. Hope she brings us good luck like Hudson has. HUDSON 09 MINKA ’10
RAB fave Keith Law chimes in on the Yanks’ left field situation in Rumor Central today, saying that the Yanks should just stick with Brett Gardner in left because of his defense. “Either Nady or (Reed) Johnson represent marginal improvements that may not justify the cost,” says KLaw. “Neither is really a full-time player. Johnson is strictly a platoon player, and can back up Granderson, but they have Gardner for that. Nady, even when healthy, was a platoon guy until ‘08.
The Yanks’ offense is good enough that they could carry a black hole in left, and there’s no reason for them to fix something that we aren’t completely sure is broken yet.
“Eventually, some other option will emerge,” KLaw adds, “and there’s no reason for the Yanks to spend money on left field simply for the sake of spending money.”

wow. Keith Law gets it

Yeah, when Alex hit that ball he stood at home plate because at first it looked like it was going foul. I managed to get a great pic of him watching the ball, basically the same pic that was in the NY Daily News only taken from our upper deck seats and taken from his back.It was a lot of fun being there.
upstate Kate,
You’re right, we have been lucky to have attended some great games. We were at the closing of the Stadium in ’08. The best one this year was ALCS Game 2. We stayed till the end, were frozen and damp but loved every second.

So, Mrs. Dog cursing to you in Spanish has the same affect on you as when Morticia Addams talks to Gomez in French?

You end up going with the PB&J or Steak?

Bronx Jeers:
She yells at me in Spanish, English and Spanglish. The Spanglish comes out when she’s really mad: a few derogatory terms in English followed by an idiomatic expression in Spanish followed by…. You get the picture.

LMAO. That would shiver my timbers, too….unless she’s got a cutless in her hand. That would leave me to believe that it wasn’t love on her mind.

I love Alex G. Bell.
murphydog,
Think of the bright side. It sounds like she gave you a crash course in learning the bad words in both Spanish and Spanglish.
Spanglish was a good movie.

Good call. Exactly the type of decision I would have made…

Interesting take on LF.
With respect to Minka, I’m a guy. I saw her in person. She is very pretty. And wouldn’t it be a shame if we lived in a world where we all thought the same type of woman is pretty? There would be a lot of disappointed men.

I figured if I called for the pizza, I wouldn’t have to contribute to polluting and wasting precious water.
Minka Kelly is FINE.
Case closed

So with respect to someone like Jessica Alba you’re a girl???
“She yells at me in Spanish, English and Spanglish. The Spanglish comes out when she’s really mad: a few derogatory terms in English followed by an idiomatic expression in Spanish followed by…. You get the picture.”
Yo entiendo.
I’ll usually get straight Spanish. Then I’m stupid if I don’t completely understand it.
The worst is when I get the old “!Dejame en Paz!” which means the argument’s over and I lost.
“He has prob been with his share of divas. Would not be a good career move to marry one.”
Do you know what a diva is?
Real, real slow day on the blog when you have to discus Minka’s looks.
Am I a glutton for punishment, or did anyone else wish when Jose Canseco said that he had gotten worse treatment than any other steroid user, he would have thrown Alex’s name out there, saying he is now a hero!
as much as you do i reckon
canseco hates alex for other reasons

If she reaches for the steel, I make a sprint for the car. Even though she’s younger, I’m in better cardio shape than she is so running away till things cool down has worked so far. Sleeping with one eye open also helps.
Rodg12–Good point on the grammar. But, I’d be whatever or whoever Ms. Alba would like me to be.

Didnt work for Tiger
“Dejame en Paz” I’d take. It’s when she resorts to calling me “Ben” something something that I know I’m in trouble
So i watched the Costas interview. He asked Mcguire if he ever shot up with Conseco in a bathroom stall.
A. How can two big king kongs both fit in one stall?
B. Even if they could. That just doesnt sound right. 2 guys in one stall.
C. Why would he give any props to the one guy that threw everyone under the bus?
why is francesa giving D. Wright so much time? talk about a slow news day.
New post….

I’d never give Mrs. Dog as much provocation as he gave Elin. You never want to fire up the other side before a big match.
“I refuse to read bru’s wall of text so maybe you can answer my question. Does the CBA specify how that money can be spent? Does it have to go directly into payroll or can it be spent in other areas like the minor leagues, scouting, etc?”
