Alex Rodriguez is one of several athletes, musicians and celebrities endorsing an effort called Save Haiti Saturday. The site includes an easy way to donate to the relief effort.

From the site, here’s Rodriguez’s statement of support.

“The massive devastation I have seen in Haiti is overwhelming. It’s time for the World to join forces to help those in need. Join me this Saturday, January 16, for Save Haiti Saturday, and make this a national day of giving. I encourage all citizens of the World to help our fellow human beings. They truly need our support. Log on to SaveHaitiSaturday.com and help Project Medishares’ doctors in Haiti save lives.”

is a-rod gonna match my donation or what?

  2. Pris January 16th, 2010 at 6:13 pm

I am all for donation and helping Haiti and I am doing my part, but this particular website is not very well put IMHO… Are those names on “endorsement” list doing anything for this event? (if anyone figured out what exactly the event is about…?)

  3. Patrick January 16th, 2010 at 6:15 pm

Good job by A-rod, this is as worthy a cause as there is. I urge everyone to donate even a couple bucks to some kind of charity. I’ve been watching CNN For the past few days and it’s really heartbreaking what is going on in Haiti right now.

I hope more Dominican players follow A-rod’s lead and do something for Haiti. A lot of Dominicans were originally Haitian anyways.

    Write a check Alex.

“He cost the team two doubles and a triple in the post season. As far as people disagreeing with that, I could care less. I call it like I see it.”

    ——————————–

I for one am glad the Yankees do not evaluate players based on 3 plays.

Gardner has been known as a +defender throughout his minor league career and that did not change last season.

It does not matter how he gets to balls, if he misreads the ball off the bat, if he looks bad going back at times. All that matters is that he gets to the ball.

The fact that he is relying on his speed alone (which I do not entirely buy, but just going by your argument) only suggests he will improve with more experience and coaching.

  7. Rich in NJ January 16th, 2010 at 6:30 pm

    Gardner is a plus defender.

I think it’s a near certainty that A-Rod wrote a very generous check.

“Are those names on “endorsement” list doing anything for this event? (if anyone figured out what exactly the event is about…?)”

The event is the listed participating restaurants and clubs are donating their profits from today to Medishare. So people can go have a nice night out and the money is going for a good cause.

Since Medishare is UM afiliated, I’m guessing they have Alex on an auto pay plan. Not so much a question of will you give but how much.

It wasn’t based on just three games. He was lousy going back on balls all season.

  13. Rich in NJ January 16th, 2010 at 6:48 pm

Gardner got hurt making a great catch going back on a ball.

“He was lousy going back on balls all season.”

    ————————–

Whether you think that or not does not change the fact that he got those balls.

There is no reason to argue over how good he was going back on balls, because like I said, it does not matter how he gets there as long as he does.

  15. Rich in NJ January 16th, 2010 at 6:51 pm

I’m with ya on Gardner’s defense.

But it seems to be one of those “defense is in the eye of the beholder” type deals. I don’t care, as long as he can improve. But, like you said, if people are expecting plus defense, no way. Serviceable and maybe a little more? Yes. Maybe he’ll be better in left. :)

At any rate, as a fan of the Yankees, if they’re going with Gardner, I’m rooting for him all the way. Love for the guy to show me he’s better than I’m thinking. That would only be all good.

  17. lets go yankees January 16th, 2010 at 7:11 pm

I think you would be extremely hard pressed to find a scouting report that rates Gardner’s D as “serviceable and maybe a little more”

  19. whatever January 16th, 2010 at 7:17 pm

Hal Steinbrenner is making a huge mistake not ponying up to re-sign Johnny Damon and I really don’t think he realizes it. He’s important to this team because Curtis Granderson is not a small ball type of player and Nick Johnson is too damn slow to hit 2nd. BIG mistake, I can’t stress it enough and its the difference between repeating and not repeating, in my opinion.

  20. Nick in SF January 16th, 2010 at 7:18 pm

“Damon just had one of the best years of his career and was a hero in the WS…I can kinda see how he didn’t want to take a huge paycut.”

Sure, and the Yankees are the richest team in baseball, so I can see it too. But, ego aside, Damon was being paid to do a job he couldn’t do anymore for the second half of his contract. That’s the way it goes, Johnny

Doreen, I agree. Never said that he couldn’t learn to track flies over his head. He’s one of the better ones going side to side, though. Trouble is in finding him a good outfield coach. Back in the ’90s (that’s the 1990s for the smart azses), NYYs had a great outfield coach who was also the base running and bunting coaches in Jose Cardinal. NYY hasn’t had a good one since, though, I think Paul O’Neill might be a solid choice.

  23. Doreen January 16th, 2010 at 7:21 pm

    OOOPS!

    Let’s go Yanks –

I was actually agreeing with your take on Gardner’s defense , but misread the post and thought it was GB7′s.

But, still, I prefer to try and take a rosy outlook. Serviceable is not great – it means you can deal with it.

My particular issue with Gardner is how he played short balls into doubles and triples. Going back, he seems to like to run into the wall. At least he’s not pre-Angels Abreu. :?

  24. blake January 16th, 2010 at 7:24 pm

    Nick,

You’re right but you can’t fault him for trying to get that money. We all would do the same thing in his shoes.

  25. Doreen January 16th, 2010 at 7:25 pm

    Okay.

So, Gardner does side-to-side pretty good. Front to back, not so much. :)

  26. Nick in SF January 16th, 2010 at 7:29 pm

Would we all be foolish enough to say not to even bother with any offers below 3 years/$13 million (if that in fact happened)?

Whoever thought that was a good idea wasn’t thinking too clearly.

  27. Rich in NJ January 16th, 2010 at 7:31 pm

The only thing I would “fault” Damon for, although it’s still premature, is if he turned down more than he will ultimately get, while trying to get more than he was offered.

  28. GreenBeret7 January 16th, 2010 at 7:31 pm

Like Doreen says, if NYY’s going with Gardner, as long as he learns and improves, I don’t care who plays in left or center as long as they’re the best NY has and they can do the best job possible. I don’t care if it’s Gardner, Granderson, Damon or Cabrera. As long as it’s the best.

  29. blake January 16th, 2010 at 7:37 pm

Nick, that’s just Boras talking his talk. Damon said he would come back for 2/20 after he saw that the Yanks were moving on.

Boras is a great agent but teams have called his bluff with Damon and he’s holding a pair of twos instead of his usual straight flush. Its unfortunate for Damon and someone is gonna get a good deal on a good player.

  30. Nick in SF January 16th, 2010 at 7:40 pm

A pair of 2′s…like a mackeral in the moonlight…looks all bright and shiny to start with, but then it begins to stink.

driveline mechanics have gardner at 2.6 war
melky at 2.1 war in 2010

fg have melky at 1.4 war in 2010
gardner at 2.4 war in 2010

  32. braeden January 16th, 2010 at 7:45 pm

I fault Damon for not seeing how firm Cashman was with Abreu last yr, and that he would lose holding out for more money in this years economy, and for more than the Yankees are willing to pay. It seems like the Yankees braintrust said get younger, now.

I also think Cashman and Hal love sticking it to Boras any chance they get.

  33. Rich in NJ January 16th, 2010 at 7:46 pm

Melky won’t play CF for the Braves, so he loses. .5 WAR (which they probably figured in). If Gardner plays LF, he would have the same positional adjustment.

  34. Rich in NJ January 16th, 2010 at 7:47 pm

“I also think Cashman and Hal love sticking it to Boras any chance they get.”

I don’t. They know that it’s in their best interests to have a good working relationship with him.

Hey, Damon I’ll bet 7 million a year sounds better now with, suitors wanting to sign you for 2 million a year?

  38. Doreen January 16th, 2010 at 8:00 pm

I don’t think the Yankees are “sticking it” to Boras or even think that way at all. That’s a fan’s reaction. Scott Boras represents Teixeira and there didn’t seem to be a problem last season with that one.

This Damon thing has nothing to do with Boras and everything to do with the Yankees setting their own cost/value paramaters and following through, and ultimately about their being willing to say goodbye to a favorite if the salary/contract demands fall too far outside the pre-set parameters.

Anyone surprised by this season’s handling of Damon (including Damon) didn’t follow the Bernie Williams Saga nor the more recent Bobby Abreu episode.

I wanted Damon back, as well as Matsui. But I don’t evaluate the team and its needs the same way the Yankees do. Frankly, when Boras started talkling about Damon’s superior genetics, I thought this was not gonna go the way I’d thought it would.

  39. DaSaint007 January 16th, 2010 at 8:00 pm

I’m happy to see athletes, actors, and everyday folks contribute to the relief efforts.

I haven’t checked here to see what’s been happening as I usually would, as I’ve been caught up in the tragic events. Thankfully, yesterday my wife’s family heard good news about their missing relatives.

    Relief is an understatement.

  40. braeden January 16th, 2010 at 8:01 pm

Yankees are Boras’s best customer, they help him by setting the market price. When the Yankees are out of a deal prices drop. i.e. Holliday. He’s never played the Yankees like the Angels, and sawx. Damon’s value has dropped and because of Cashman holding strong he has no market.

Boras got the Cardinals to bid against themselves, by using the thought of the Yankees swooping in and getting Holliday.

Boras needs the Yankees, and he misses Big Stein believe!

  42. braeden January 16th, 2010 at 8:09 pm

    Doreen

I only wanted Matsui and Chien Ming Wang back. I can live without the others. Matsui will be missed, Wang should come back.

Damon angered me when he and his wifey went to the NY Post and Newsday hyping interest. All through the year he sang a different tune.

  43. braeden January 16th, 2010 at 8:17 pm

    Doreen

When Boras compared Damon to Jeter, and said he should get the contract consideration Jeter will getb, I knew there was going to be problems resigning Johnny.

I really like Damon, but when any player puts themselves above the team because of ego demands, stick a fork in it I’m done!!

  44. Rick January 16th, 2010 at 8:30 pm

The illusion Scott Boras has toward today’s economics has come back to bite him.
Hard line negotiating once worked for him but he needs to take some steps back.
He got in under the wire with Mark Teixeira’s deal and found tough sledding with Holliday’s deal. Next year will be no day at the beach for him and his clients.

  45. cameron January 16th, 2010 at 8:40 pm

Boras didn’t do right by Damon. At all cost Damon should be on the Yankees to finish out his career. Damon should have said no matter what I want to come back get the best deal from the Yankees to make it happen.

  46. crawdaddy January 16th, 2010 at 8:45 pm

“I don’t. They know that it’s in their best interests to have a good working relationship with him.”

I agree with Rich. The Yankees aren’t doing this to stick it to Boras. They’re trying to run their business more efficently which means sometimes hard decisions have to be made regarding their assets.

He’s 36 and will be gone sooner or later, let him go! If Cashman blinks, the other players in contract years, will know to play him the same and he lose his bargaining leverage.

Chad: enough with Gardner, also. He IS not worthy of the LF position being given to him. And does anyone really believe a few more AB’s pre-ST is going to help him??

Give us some news on Granderson. From all reports he seems to a all-around nice guy.
