Crossover appeal
Greetings from Indianapolis. I had to connect through Detroit to get here today and there was a slew of Jets fans on my flight, including several wearing Yankees hats/shirts/sweatshirts. The AFC Championship game is, obviously, tomorrow at 3 p.m. and – judging by the comments on here and in my email inbox – there is a fair amount of crossover between Yankees and Jets fans.
What I didn’t know, however, was that the crossover also carries over to the Jets themselves. According to this piece, several Jets made a point of attending a number of games during the Yankees World Series run and have been talking about what they saw in the Bronx as inspiration.
One of my earliest sports memories is watching the Mets win the 1986 World Series and, a few months later, enjoying the Giants taking home the Super Bowl trophy, too. Could this be the year for the Yankees and the Jets? Certainly the group that led a “J-E-T-S” chant as we landed is hoping so, but how about you? How many of you pinstriped fans are now wearing the Gang Green too?

I’ve been a Jets fan since 1998, when both NYC teams made the postseason and I like the Jets game better than the Giants (it helps that the Jets actually won that game).
It’s an odd feeling, trying to juxtapose being a Jets fan with what I know about being a Yankee fan, but if any of you all are interested, I wrote about it here:

Sam,
I am a long time Yankees and Jets fan. I hope some of the Yankees championship magic rubs off on the Jets!
What?!
Just kidding, Sam. Yankee fans are scattered far and wide.
Self promotion isn’t a particularly attractive quality.

Not sure what the options are, Erica. How about Korean!
Um, pizza is probably pretty doable.
On that note, I’m leaving Napa now.

The Giants SB win in the 80s was one of my first real sports memories too.
I remenber my dad yelling “McConkey!”
I’ve been a Jets fan since the late 70′s early 80′s. Back then with Klecko and Gastineau with Richard Todd the quarterback. Those where some good Jet teams then, but I have that same sense and hope that the current team has a boatload of potential and another year under his belt with Mark Sanchez. Good times ahead!
Is it possible the Yankees are honestly trying to keep the payroll under $200M when the new collective bargaining agreement comes?
I mean, if the Yankees continue to spend spend spend… the other owners are more likely to punish the team when they need to devise new luxury tax rules and/or other restrictions.
if the Yankees show that they are going to be “more responsible” or not spend what others consider to be exorbitant amounts, the owners won’t have as much of a case against them.
“Andre Dawson said he’d love to go in the Hall with a Red Sox cap because of how great they were to him”

Andre never played for this current Red Sox regime.
I know a handful of former Sox (plus Varitek) who have said they’re not very pleased with the way the new front office does business – treating them more like a # than a human being.

Call me old-fashioned, but I still like having your best two run producers in the 3 and 4 holes. If and when Damon returns I’d hit NJ farther down in the lineup, maybe even 9th so he can be on base for the top.
Indy will destroy the Jets tomorrow and the Saints will find another way to drop the biggest game of their year. Favre against Manning in the Super Bowl and THAT will be fun to watch !
Sam: it’s kinda natural isn’t it? I mean, the Jets and Yankees are both NY teams.

Diehard Yankees fan who is a Steelers fan. Hate the Jets. Except for SB III, almost no history there if you are a Jets fan. Hoping for a Saints (Brees) vs. Indy (Manning) SB. A SB between one team who started 14=0 vs. the other who started 13-0.
The Jets are losers, just like the Mets… YANKEES FANS ARE GIANTS FANS.. END OF DISCUSSION!!!!!

Mike S…..I am RIGHT with ya….Go Steelers…too bad we found ways to lose 5 out of the 7 games this year that easily could have gone either way. NOT GOOD that our defense CHOKES without TROY….One person, EVEN with how great he is, should NOT define your whole defense. Gotta disagree with ya on the Super Bowl though. Spent some time in San Diego, and Brees chokes when it REALLY matters. He has no answer for the pressure Minny will bring, IMHO. GO STEELERS….next year !

My hunch is that Girardi will give clues towards the end of spring training about how he envisions the line up. I can’t imagine you’ll have much fluctuation in the line ups the first week. Most people will probably keep submitting the opening day line up.
Your best bet is to watch what line ups get submitted, and then once you get a feel for which spot changes, you can adjust your tabs accordingly.
Did you originally have the tabs when you were playing around with it? Or did that idea help?
Pie in the face for McAllister for posting that spreadsheet.

my dad grew up in flushing, queens and always loved the yankees, because when he was a boy the mets weren’t around yet, and when they did become a team he was already loyal to the yankees. but when the jets came and played in shea stadium (he was about 15 years old at the time) he became a jets fan.
so thats my story of how i inherited becoming a yankees/jets fan.
thankfully he wasnt born a few years later or he may have become a mets fan… yuck.

Yankees-Giants-Heat-Isles. From LI, whole family Giants fans. Most of family Yankees fans. Live in Florida and Knicks stink. But the Jets played in Shea while the Giants played in YS, so there is the connection.

The Yankees have a right handed power bat on the way in Montero. Crawford is an elite defender and gives them a top of the order bat to replace Damon and help set the table as Jeter gets older.
I’m a Yankees (since 1985)/Vikings fan. But I AM a fan of the Jets’ Jim Leonhard, who grew up a few miles from where I live. I WILL be sticking with the Vikings, though, if they end up facing each other in the SB!
yankees fans are naturaly giants ,knicks and rangers fans and the other bad side of town who cant win a championship is mets, nets, jets and islanders hate the jets becuase they rytme with the mets tomorrow they lose 50 -14

=====================================================
It could happen. The Hall takes the player’s desire into account. It’s not necessarily the deciding factor, but it carries weight. For example, Catfish Hunter requesting going into the Hall without ANY team recognition because he didn’t want to insult the A’s or the Yanks, and Hall went along, even though it didn’t make any baseball sense, since most of Hunter’s Hall of fame credentials were achieved with A’s.
I’ve always joked at least I am a fan of one team that is a winner.

The Damon Saga as told by Bill Madden
“Tell us your bottom line for what you’re willing to play for,” they said, “and if it’s in the realm of where our budget needs to be we can go to ownership (Hal Steinbrenner) and see if something can be worked out.” But instead of giving them a number, Boras came back with more of his patented “mystery team” hogwash, claiming he had a couple of other offers they were still considering.
http://www.nydailynews.com/spo.....nkees.html
Boras is really screwing Johnny over. He’s literally costing Damon millions, perhaps $9 million and maybe more.
I’m a Yankees and Jets fan, always have been. I know people who are Giants & Mets fans, I never understood why one was “supposed” to go with the other. I watch the Giants too, but I don’t live & die with every play like the Jets. I guess being a Jets fan gives balance to being a Yankees fan, but when I was growing up the Giants won the Super Bowl, the Jets were OK, and the Yankees were god-awful. So winning wasn’t a prerequisite for my loyalty. I also don’t think there’s a rivalry between Jets and Giants fans. I was thrilled to see the Giants win the Super Bowl (especially against the Patriots), and my Giants-fan friends are rooting hard for the Jets. It’s not like baseball, where Mets fans have to be Yankee haters. As a Yankee fan, I don’t hate the Mets, I am completely indifferent to them. When the Yankees play the Mets in the regular season, to me they might as well be playing the White Sox or the Mariners. It means absolutely nothing. The only time it did was in the World Series.
I wouldn’t mind getting Damon back for next year, but the Yankees shouldn’t break the bank for him obviously. I think $4 mill is the highest they should go, which is pretty reasonable from the yankees point of view given their $2 million budget. That said, Damon was looking for $10 mill or more for multiple years, so if he ends up taking a pity offer, is he going to put in as much effort? I mean he doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who would throw a season, but there’s got to be a sense of bitterness lingering from having to bring down your expectations.
Basically, is Damon the same player on $3 to $4 million one-year contract as he is on a $20 million 2 year contract?
Big Blue all the way!
If Damon doesn’t like the terms, he’s more than welcome to consider the offers from the “mystery teams” that have surfaced.
If Damon agrees to come back to the Yankees on terms he’s not thrilled with, he’ll more than likely be playing with a chip on his shoulder. That “I’ll show you” attitude can be a good thing sometimes.

Rich:
It’s nearly 1 AM CST and I just stopped in to see who’s posting and, of course, you’re up. God, aside from all the BS that is posted on this blog, ya gotta think that Damon is gonna have to reluctantly take the Yankees low-ball offer in the end. Saw the Madden piece on Boras’ malpractice in representing Damon. Not sure I completely agree.
While I do think somebody overplayed their hand, I’m not willing to believe for a minute that Damon is such an innocent that he didn’t come to an understanding with Boras early on – like about July of last year – as to how this free agent strategy should go. Believe what you want to believe about Avenging Agent Boras, but he is still the agent/lawyer and as such he advises but does what his client dictates.
The Bobby Abreu story was written last year, everybody saw what happened to Abreu. Damon and Boras didn’t get the memo? Of course they did. So if that info was on the table last year, does anybody really believe that it wasn’t understood by Boras? I refuse to believe that Damon is such a dupe he is essentially being held hostage by his lawyer. Obviously I don’t know anything directly, but common sense tells me that holding Boras 100% responsible is just silly.

————————————————————
Damon should or could have stepped in and dictated the terms that he would agree to return to NY. Rogers, Jones and others have either bypassed or fired Boras in the last couple of years to go to the team they wanted or were willing to accept. I’d add Rodriguez to that, also, if I knew the details of how/why he went to the Steinbrenners.
Murphdog
Boras slapped Damon back to Borasville at seasons end. It was night and day from what Damon said before the season ended, and postseason. I agree Johnny wasn’t an innocent by stander. Damon sould’ve told Boras ” We’ll start off your way, as long as I stay with the Yankees.”
Damon’s last best chance was the 2 year, $10M deal Cashman offered. He should have seen this and told Boras to go with it. He’ll never get the same offer again.
Boras attempts to get the most money for his clients and usually does but he deeply underestimated the market and it’s backfired on him.
I just can’t imagine Damon accepting a 2 mil offer from the Yankees and I certainly don’t expect Cash to confirm the story posted by Heyman (if it’s true).
That said, if we use his list of alternatives then here is my order of preference:
1. Randy Winn
2. Reed Johnson
3. Jim Edmonds
4. Jermaine Dye
I still think that the best move is to sign Tatis and play Gardner in LF. I just believe Fernando is the best option out there for a bench role due to his experience in the position. It is not easy for players who have played everyday to adapt to bench roles (so that eliminates Edmonds, Winn and Dye) and Tatis, while not the defender Reed Johnson is, can play more positions than Johnson and has a little more pop in the bat.
If the Yankees are concerned that Brett Gardner can’t play everyday – then bring in an outfielder on a minor league deal with an invitation (Edmonds or Winn) and if they outplay Gardner send Brett to AAA.
Boras was using his same playbook, to a group of clubs that either refused to deal with him this year or held their ground.
The ONLY gullible fool was John Mozeliak Gm Cardinals, who in his desperation, thought the most important position on his team was an outfielder, and bid against himself, after having Boras by the Cajones.
Boras works for Damon, and he could have stepped in and said sign. 14M was beneath him, so what is 2M?
THIS IS MALPRACTICE ON BORAS’S PART, to take 12M from a client and put him in this spot to receive 2.
Johnny should sign with the Yankees, and sue Boras for 10M the difference, left on the table, that’ll send shock waves throughout baseball.
Forget Randy Winn. He has deteriorated past the point of being even as good as Gardner, Edmonds hasn’t played for two years, Johnson can’t stay any healthier than Nick Johnson and defensively, Bernie Williams would be a better choice than Dye. Find another super scrub like Curch or Tatis to champion their cause.
Edmonds hasn’t played since 2008, he’s 1 yr removed!

i’ve been a long time yankees/jets fan…
im one of those rare breeds i guess…
my dad grew up in flushing, queens and always loved the yankees, because when he was a boy the mets weren’t around yet, and when they did become a team he was already loyal to the yankees. but when the jets came and played in shea stadium (he was about 15 years old at the time) he became a jets fan.
so thats my story of how i inherited becoming a yankees/jets fan.
==============================================================
“Inheritance” is the right word. Like religion, most of us inherit who we will root for the rest of our lives. My Dad was born in the Bronx, played ball, so that is why I am a Yank fan. He couldn’t bring himself to root for a team called the NY Football Giants, as he despised the NL Brooklyn Dodgers and NY Giants baseball teams, archrivals they were. So he rooted for the Packers as they were the closest to the Yanks as a dynasty. Then I came along and did my part making him a Jet and Knick fan, sort of reversing the order of things, this time from son to Dad.
’07 Giants = ’09 Jets
run the ball, don’t let QB mess things up, play great defense.
3 road playoff wins.
