Yankees announce game times; Nady signs with Cubs
I usually add my two cents to the morning’s guest post around this time, but there are a couple of newsworthy things going on this afternoon.
1. Major League Baseball has announced the tentative game times for the 2010 season. You can find a printable version of the Yankees schedule right here. There are still a few TBA’s here and there, but for the most part, the times are set.
2. Xavier Nady has signed with the Chicago Cubs, taking one right-handed outfield option off the free agent market. As of right now, I haven’t seen anything on contract details.
UPDATE, 12:59 p.m.: Looks like Ben Sheets has signed with Oakland, which means the A’s are no longer likley to go after Johnny Damon. It had been reported that Damon was Oakland’s Plan B if a deal couldn’t be reached with Sheets.
UPDATE, 1:58 p.m.: Nady got $3.3 million plus heavy $2 mil in incentives. Probably a little more than the Yankees would have wanted to spend. Sheets is one-year, $10 million, almost certainly more than the Yankees would have wanted to spend.
UPDATE, 2:35 p.m.: Two reports — Heyman and Olney — suggest the A’s are still in on Damon, even after signing Sheets. Peter Gammons says the A’s still expect Damon to end up with the Yankees.

From the other thread….
Tom,
Yes, Tony faced Warren. Was very impressed by him.
He throws a heavy ball and was consistently 92-94 in the games he faced him while at BC.
Also faced him in the Cape and he was throwing in that range.
He was a very good college pitcher. I was somewhat surprised he lasted as long as he did in the draft simply because I thought he was productive and had a very good arm.
It will be interesting to see if his stuff translates as he moves up the ranks. If it does, he can be a fast mover.
You never know though until guys face better competition after short season ball.
How about Melvin Mora for a LF/3B/Bench Roll? Hes always been a tough out and he played some outfield earlier in his career.
Sheets may have taken the offer:

Come home Damon!
I have always supported Damon re-signing with the Yankees. However, I don’t like seeing other options, such as Nady, removed since the Yankees new budget issues make me believe they have no intention of paying Damon enough to have him return.
Baldelli, Johnson or Dye left. Ughh.
Erica I still think ultimately Johnny will sign with the Yankees for about 6 million.
I read somewhere he said his numbers were down in 2001 (?) because he was playing in Oakland’s huge park (foul ground)Why go back there for a little bit more $$? Go where you know you have a chance to win.

Has Cashman signed a single Boras client this off season? Something tells me the Yankees are weaning themselves off Boras.
As of this date Alex, Tiexiera, and Brackman are the only ones already on the roster.
Gone are Nady,Damon and Kennedy. Seems like Cashman is backing away.
Of next years FA that interest Cashman NONE HAVE BORAS as an agent.
Smart move by Sheets and the A’s.
Big ballpark, very pitcher friendly.
Basically, that’s a half season deal for Oakland.
They will deal him (if he shows anything) at the deadline, like they did with Holliday last year.
wow, good thing we already had a left fielder (sorry, but
enough is enough).
why is everyone so worried about going into the season with this lineup?
Erica hold on to your hat. Seems pretty official that Sheets signed with the A’s.

LOL Somehow I’m willing to bet that if it’s announced that JD has signed with NYY, you’ll be too excited for a muted scream.
I don’t think its a conscious decision by Cashman or the Yankees. Its more the way things shook out this off-season.
Let’s remember, they have 435 million in guaranteed money given to Alex and Tex the last 2 seasons. No small number.
They were all set to sign Damon in December if he took the 2 year offer.
The rest of the guys Boras had this off-season had no real appeal for the Yankees unless there was a bargain for Holliday. We saw that wasn’t the case.
Cashman has a very good relationship with Boras. In fact, the Yankees like dealing with Boras more than they like dealing with a lot of agents (ahem: Arn Tellem for example) in the industry.
There goes a “mystery team”
Cashman please stick to your guns Boras can not win this one! Boras thinks you’re stupid, desperate, and ready to oner pay.
Every team is overlooking Damon for a reason, his sub par defense.
and that leaves 1 team for Johnny Damon…
Sheets signed according to MLBTR.
edit: oner=over
SJ -
I half agree with you. It’s a great signing for Oakland if Sheets is able to stay healthy until the trade deadline.
I don’t get what Sheets was thinking though. Yes Oakland is a big park with a lot of foul ground but they are an awful defensive team and have to play against some pretty strong offensive clubs. It would have been smarter for him to go to a division like the NL West where all the parks are big and the teams have a lot less offensive potential.
Nick in SF –
re Wang comment. Sharp my friend, very sharp!
I’m also not entirely sure where Nady fits in with the Cubs – they’re already a primarily RH team. Seems to me a left handed bat would have been a better call there.
If the Yankees sign Damon then that doesn’t mean that Boras wins because they will have signed him on their terms not his..which means Boras loses.
Blake-
If Johnny comes home what do you think the terms will be ?
ya hear from time to time that atlanta has interest in Damon.
Who knows if that’s real or a Boras mirage.
But I do know the sands in the hour glass is running down: only 3 weeks until spring training.
Johnny better grab a chair, before the music stops playing.
Chip,
No NL West team was going to pay him what he got in Oakland.
AZ and SD don’t have the money.
The Dodgers are a mess off the McCourt divorce and can’t do anything.
The Giants are at their budgetary limit and have no need for him and Sheets has no interest pitching in Colorado.
Oakland is the best landing spot for him.
Boras doesn’t think Cashman is stupid at all. He has his style of doing business and Cash has his. Its mutual respect.
Players and agents disagree all the time about the value of a player and it rarely is personal. Its just business.
Blake -
I just don’t see it. I can’t see Damon signing for what the Yankees are going to offer.
There have been some comparisons to how they handled Andy last year, but I think with Andy the Yankees made more of an effort to get him to sign then they are with Damon.
I really just believe that, in his mind, Cashman has already moved on and even if Damon fired Boras and came back on bended knee the Yankees wouldn’t have a spot for him.
“Something tells me the Yankees are weaning themselves off Boras.”
Until they find one of his clients they want and then Cash will have Scott on speed dial.
That post from the last thread about if Damons offensive and defensive abilities were switched then he would have already signed for 13 million per….so basicaaly if her were Brett Gardner then he would have already signed for that much. I think not. Maybe I misinterpreted the post but that makes zero sense at all. Teams don’t pay big bucks for LF defense.
SJ -
You’re probably right about the money. He just would have been a great fit on the Dodgers. A shame that their situation prevents them from doing anything.
“I don’t get what Sheets was thinking though. Yes Oakland is a big park with a lot of foul ground but they are an awful defensive team and have to play against some pretty strong offensive clubs. Here is another thing that fall in the category of “don’t you think baseball GM’s KNOW this already”.
GM’s can adjust for park, competition, defense and read advanced stats as well as we all can.
Why do you assume baseball GM’s are going to make trades based solely on W-L and ERA?
Pat –
Agreed. The Yankees had no problem with Boras last year when it came to inking Tex. If Boras was representing a player the Yankees really wanted they would have no problem working with him. They just don’t really want Johnny right now.
Cashman has Boras on the ropes, he’s weaving and bobbing. Cashman throws a jab, Boras’s head goes back. Cashman throws an uppercut,Boras’s legs get wobbly but he stays up…barely!

“Yes Oakland is a big park with a lot of foul ground but they are an awful defensive team and have to play against some pretty strong offensive clubs”
If they go with Davis, Crisp and Sweeney in the outfield, it’s going to be pretty darn good defensively. Ellis is a very good 2B. Don’t know much about Pennington or whether they’ve determined what they’re doing at 1st and 3rd, but I do like Sheets chances on a fly ball or grounder to 2nd.
one thing is for sure:
The Angels are going to be facing a LOT more competition this season.
Where does Johnny Damon fit in with the Braves?
They have Diaz, Cabrera and McClouth right now. Jason Haywood and Jordan Schaeffer on the cusp.
I don’t see a fit with Damon and the Braves at all and we haven’t even talked money yet.
Money and roster configuration tells me Atlanta is not a destination for him.
Tom, here’s a right up on Adama Warren. 5 pitch pitcher.
http://www.yankeesdaily.com/?p=11671
Stucky -
Yes, GMs can adjust for all of that and with Sheets a GM who is making a trade for him is going to be more concerned with how healthy he is and how his stuff is going than they are with wins and losses.
Having said that, any pitcher is likely to pitch better when he’s relaxed, and a pitcher is likely to be more relaxed if he can trust the guys behind him to catch the ball.
SJ-
If JD were to come home what would you guess the terms to be ?
Correction: ***Adam Warren**
Chip,
You may be right but I don’t think that’s the case. I think they offer him 5 or 6 million + some incentives for a year and he takes it. You are right though, he won’t play for 2 Million so it’ll probably depend on whether or not the yankees will go to that 5 or 6 M.
I have to chuckle at those of you who think Boras is taking a hit off the Damon problems. He’s not. Just as he didn’t “lose” by the way the Alex contract went down.
Did the Boras/Damon camp make a mistake in how they handled his negotations? Of course they did, but that doesn’t mean that Boras is “on the ropes” with Cashman in regard to Damon.
The way I see it. This 2 million or so left to spend is Cash spewing bs to the media. Cash wouldn’t diss Damon by offering 2 million. He’ll get 5-6 million and that is it. Book it Damon will be playing left field for the Yankees.
MTU,
I think Madden laid out the scenario the other day…
Cash: “Tell us the minimum you would take this year to come back and I will go to Hal and try to get it for you”.
If Damon says 4-6, Cash goes to Hal. Anything more, he says they can’t do it.
Its pretty clear he’s the Abreu of this off-season.
Meaning, a 1 year deal in the 4-6 million dollar range is about the best he can hope for right now unless Scott really has a mystery team on the hook.
MTU,
I’m thinking 1 year at 5 or 6 million + plus some incentives. I don’t think anybody is interested beyond that.
The Damon List -
Yanks
Braves?
Giants?
Anybody else who would be interested at $2-4M?
Where else is Johnny going? Sweeten the deal with some incentives and call it a day.
1 year, $4-5 million with incentives.
It’s a bit of a gamble with Sheets going to Oakland. What better place to pitch in the AL to possibly rid the “but, can he pitch in the AL” stuff to surely be floated. Seattle won’t tie up more money and they get to see what he can do for next year when they are free of the Cliff Lee contract.
I was riding home from the mall and just heard the announcement about Nady, and I said, uh-oh, another one gone off the table, and then I thought about Laura
.
And then they announced the A’s were having a press conference. At first, I thought, oh, no, there goes Johnny.
Thanks heavens, by the time I got home, the news was Sheets to the A’s.
I mean, seriously, what are they waiting for at this point???
SJ-
So incentives would be out ?
Thanks.
“Cashman please stick to your guns Boras can not win this one!”
I don’t think there is much to worry about. This talk about the A’s, and the Braves & Tigers before them, hasn’t motivated Cash to make a renewed attempt to nab Damon. I like their strategy (reported by Bill Madden I think) of not making a low offer to Damon but asking him/Boras what their bottom line is…which Cash would then take to Hal and ask for clearance. This was of course met with more of the old mystery team nonsense, but I think that game has about run its course…this leak about being ‘plan b’ for the A’s was pretty weak, seems to indicate a real lack of alternatives.

Gayle:
Pettitte actually only got $5.5M plus incentives last season. $10M gauranteed for Sheets is pretty stunning.
DaSaint -
You’re 100% right about Boras being the rep and the final call being the player’s.
We’ve seen a couple of times where players (really) broke ranks from Boras to make a deal happen:
Two of the most famous examples were Pudge and Andruw Jones. Pudge was about 24 hours from being traded to the Yankees for Jorge Posada because the Rangers hadn’t had any luck negotiating an extension for him with Boras and Pudge walked into the GM’s office and hammered out the deal himself to keep him in Texas.
SJ –
I agree with you that 1 year 4-6 mil is the best Damon can hope for – I just really don’t think it’s coming out of the Bronx.
Saint-
“Sheets got $10MM plus incentives?! Amazing. And I thought that Billy Bean guy was smart.”
SJ thinks he might spin him like Holliday. That might make him smart ?
DaSaint -
It’s not that far a reach – Rich Harden (just as big an injury risk) got 7.5, Randy Wolf (who also is an injury risk) got 10 mil per for 3 years…I would say given that Sheets is the best of the three him getting 1 year 10 mil is about right.
Plus Beane figures it’s only going to cost him 5 mil since I’m sure he’s planning on dealing Sheets by the end of July.
GB, thanks for the Warren link.
“And let’s face it, he’s a terrible, no, horrible, when it comes to interviews.”
You won’t find him at any mensa meetings, but the guy did fight his way thru a significant stuttering problem as a youngster. To get himself to the point where he can be comfortable talking on TV/Radio is a true feat in and of itself.

I think it’s a mistake to see these negoations as being a zero-sum game between Cashman and Boras. Cashman represents the Yankees’ interests and Boras represents his players’ interests. Sometimes there’s a match and sometimes there isn’t. Sometimes there’s a match but the terms have to change to close the deal. That’s what negotiation is – JD signing for $4MM wouldn’t be a “loss” for Boras any more than A-Rod’s $30MM was a “win.” Everybody wins when a player winds up in the right place.
Some of you seem more fixated on “teaching Boras a lesson” than the Yankees fielding the best team.

Chad just said that the Yankees aren’t in Dye:
http://www.hotstove.com/
I’m convinced that there’s an NL discount, and an AL East premium.
Johnny Damon is not getting any closer to accepting a 1 mil or 2 mil deal. If anything he’s getting closer to retiring. Does anyone believe that Johnny would have a difficult time living off his MLB pension and whatever he has saved off of the contracts he’s already completed?
We saw this with Kenny Lofton and Mike Piazza among others, where a guy believes his worth is X, he doesn’t get it, and rather than accept less than that he just walks away.
Again, it’s easy for us to sit here and say Johnny should take 4 mil to come back for 1 year, but imagine if your boss came to you after you just closed a major deal for your office and said, “hey great job, we would like you to take a 66% paycut.”
If you had the money in the bank, wouldn’t you rather walk away then continue to work at 1/3 your previous salary?

I can’t handle this emotional roller coaster anymore.
JOHNNY- YOU ARE A YANKEE!!!!!!!!!!!
(Okay, I have to do some work for a while now. My posting will be limited)
Still 2 moves to make before ST…
I still don’t see Johnny going to the other coast to play for a losing team.
Taking a pay cut when you are an athlete is different from takng a pay cut in other jobs. In most jobs your pay tends to increase w/ time. Athletes get to the point where their skills start to dimish and they aren’t paid as much. I guess it will come down to what Johnny feels he is worth vs what the Yankees feel he is worth. Hopefully they can come to an agreement.
“Nady’s deal is $3.3M plus $2M in incentives.”
Interesting. Not that it really sets anybody’s price because of the fluidity this market has bared but Johnny’s value has got to be higher than that figure. Maybe double?

Looking at what Nady and Ankiel got, the Yankees can’t reasonably expect Damon to accept $2M…..can they?
Frank-
At least 5 Mill, and possibly incentives ?
Cashman back to Hal for approval ?

Twitter is apparently blocked here too. What does it say?
Damon in oakland would be an awful move for him unless they overpaid everyone else. He supposedly wants to win which won’t happen. They have multiple ofers including crisp they just signed. They have a dh. It’s a pitchers park so he may post a hollidayesque drop in numbers from last year. Playing for similar money with the yankees to win and have the stats in yankees stadium would boost his price tag next year. To be honest. I know he doesn’t field well, but no one wants to sgn with the mets. They have money. With beltran hurt pagan to cf. Damon stays in new york where he lives. Mets might be desperate enough to hop in at some point just like when they were forced to sign the pedro deal to gain some credibility to that team.
Good luck Erica. I’ll check back later.
That’s all it says Erica.
The longer this keeps dragging on. The more i believe that Damon will end up signing for minimum wage as a bat boy/tarp guy. Maybe even selling hot dogs on long rain delays.

LOL…you’re mean. Can’t you at least upgrade him to NYY Steak?
I’m failing to understand this obsession with Damon. Is it because it’s all that’s left to talk about? He’s a good hitter and a below average to average defender. We have PLENTY of offense, the best in the league so that’s not a priority. Defense/run prevention is a bigger concern when your offense is this good because come postseason time, while Damon is a good guy to have for the postseason, run prevention is KEY come postseason, whether that’s pitching or defense.
Newsflash: GGBG can play LF, and will cost approx. $400,000.
Still feel bad for JD.
He had a stellar year, was key part of offense and gets rewarded with what? A huge pay cut? I mean I know he is older and the market is flush with outfielder (especially ones with crappy defense) but still gotta feel for the guy.
Just hope it doesn’t affect his performance when he does sign back here. You would hope he knows the fans love him and business is just business (something the Yankees are damn good at).

The ladies aren’t looking at his stats. So what if he’s got a noodle arm, lust is more important, didn’t you know?
I know a lot of people on the board are asking why everyone is so obsessed with signing Damon, just to play devil’s advocate here.. which line up do you like better:
Damon
Jeter
Tex
Arod
Johnson
Granderson
Posada
Cano
Swish

GARDNER BLOWS MAN..
“I’m failing to understand this obsession with Damon.”
Signing Damon is important because the Yanks have TWO outfield question marks, not just one. Gardner aside, you can’t ignore the .484 OPS Granderson put up against lefties last year. Even if CG increased his OPS by 100 points vs lefties it would still be awful.
Damon is the most useful insurance policy. Do the Yanks NEED him? Probably not. But they sure could use him.
It would have been nice to see what Nady could do for the Yankees over a full season.

I know exactly what you mean. Every morning now I check to see if there has been any Damon news overnight, but still nothing. I don’t think he ever thought he’d be without a team on January 26th.
Let him go! He has to be angry by now.

Sorry Erica. Thats something that has to be earned. Maybe by midseason if he plays his cards right. Now we do have an opening for a ring girl. We will be trying something new for the first time in baseball history. His wife can hold an innings sign wearing a bikini and walk around the field after every inning. It pays big.

that was me, btw. don’t worry-it happens all the time
Damon does become more important as other options sign with other teams. Even Cashman and Giradi openly admit another OF is necessary.
The Yankees can either see if Damon will sign for what they are willing to pay or fill that OF whole before the Baldelli, Johnson types sign elsewhere. I believe the end is near with Damon one way or the other.
“Hey, Hey! Not everyone on here lusts for Damon!”
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Johnny has always had a noodle arm, that is nothing new. The Yankees are definitely a better team w/ him than w/o him. Gardner can always be put in for defensive purposes late in the game.
trade chad gaudin and and the AAAA player they took in the rule 5 draft to kansas city for dejesus…..gaudin will be a starter for them they can move guillen back into the of…yankees lose gaudin’s salary….dejesus costs the yankees a little over a million for this year…..good bye johnny
Mike Axisa (he’s one of us, right?) said on mlbtr that maybe going to Oakland for a year might not be a good thing for Damon if he’s looking for a payday after 2010. The only problem with that is his payday is now.
Unless Damon’s legs get curiously stronger and his defense improves considerably AND he can show that the short right porch isn’t really is BFF, then this is it.
Right now, he’s one step above Giambi on the food chain.
offer Damon 10 rubies, not a rubie more

They aren’t giving away DeJesus.

Whoa! Yankees react to Nady signing. Trade with Texas! Hillingoss for Gohlson.
Yankees Acquire Greg Golson
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....+Rumors%29
Stop the presses…. who needs Damon?
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....olson.html
The Yankees have acquired outfielder Greg Golson from the Rangers, reports MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan. Texas will receive minor league infielder Mitch Hilligoss and cash considerations.
Damon needs to accept that he is a limited player in the last twilight of his career and he is not going to get a huge contract.
Slap hitter with modest discipline and good power depending on the park with defense that ranges from average to well below playing a corner != payday.
If I were a player, I’d probably not want to take a paycut, but damn, Damon, look at whats infront of you.
Frank i think your right.
Damon can improve his defense. Jeter did.
Damon probably can’t improve his arm.
Damon is still a good fit for this team @ approx. $5MM guaranteed, but Yankees are lefty heavy. Nady could have been a good option. Baldelli could still be, and he’ll certainly be cheaper than Damon. Probably no more than $2MM.
Still 2 moves to make…
Greg who?
Hm, Greg Golson.
Doesn’t walk, Can’t hit, strikes out 30% of the time, and sports a -200 UZR/150 in CF.
Now that we have our leftfielder of the future, whats next?
Maybe we will have to lump this
“johnny isnt coming back!”
statement with…
“Arod isnt signing”
“Tex isnt comin”
“yankees dont do incentive contracts”
soothsayers…:)
Rick–If the Royals would do that I say sign me up. DeJesus is Damon-like with defense. That said, I think the Royals would want more. I disagree that
Greg Golson? Give me some info, please.

I don’t think Baldelli is an everyday option, while Damon is.
10 mil for Sheets? Am i the only person who thinks they over paid about 5 mil on him? The man makes Pavano look like the ironman. Vasquez is looking better by the minute.

Right handed speedy centerfielder who cannot hit. Sports -200 UZR in limited major league time (probably not that bad in reality). No power, no plate discipline (in the minors), and can barely hit, but steals 20 bags.
Organizational depth most likely
new post. Yankees got a young outfielder, a former first-round pick, in a trade with the Rangers.
New post
“i’m coming out with a new book: The Complete Idiot’s Guide To Understanding Randy L.”
That should read:
The Guide For Idiot In Need For Better Understanding Of L, Randy”
Golson may actually be of value. He was the 21st overall pick in 2004, age 24. His problems are strikeouts, but plays all three outfield positions.

Switch the sides of the plate he hits on and it pretty much describes our “Crosby is in left” situation to a T.
Okay, maybe that wasn’t a reaction to the Nady signing. Seems he hasn’t reached AA yet.
If the reported deal with Nady is correct at 3 million, I think Damon to the Yanks is a pipe-dream right now. Do you think Hal is going to get sentimental all of a sudden? Let’s stop worrying about all this. Free agent big signings are over. Yankee fans need to get positioned for Cliff Lee for 2011 maybe Crawford. We should be set for 2010. Maybe a Reed Johnson makes sense. He’s healthy can hit lefties, nice platoon set-up for DH and Leftfield. I wouldn’t be upset with a Jermaine Dye signing with the power he can provide in a platoon set-up if the price is right. again we need to get ready for Cliff Lee in 2011 just like 2008 prepared the ground for CC in 2009.
Rick –
There’s no way KC would accept that deal.
To get DeJesus would take at least a package of Gardner and Aceves along with one of the young relievers (Melancon or Robertson)

and to think, you say I’m obsessed with mediocre players.
Of course the Yankees could use Damon, they could use Albert Pujols as well. Only difference is Pujols will make a major offensive difference whereas Damon will make a minor offensive difference. It’s pretty clear Granderson fell in love with the home run no matter what he says. Cashman is stressing he sees him as a 25 hr guy because the Yanks are going to insist he try to hit to all fields and stop trying to pull the ball all the time. They didnt sign him to be a masher, they have two in the middle of their order already
BG7–Good call on Golson.
Could the Angels be a possible landing spot for Damon? They recently unloaded Gary Matthews Jr. They are clearly light on outfielders. They do have Juan Rivera in left field, but maybe they’d like to add Damon too. I don’t think they have tons of money to spend, but maybe they can offer a bit more than the Yanks are willing.
For those of you putting Granderson at leadoff, 2nd , or 5th, think again. His ops is 50 pts lower than any Yankee and against leftys he’s an automatic out. Can’t bat leadoff, obp is poor, shouldn’t bat 2nd, plate discipline is weak, and 5th is absurd behind Arod since late in games Arod would be walked and a lefty brought in to face Granderson. That’s why Damon is necessary. With Damon in the 2 hole Johnson now bats 6th and doesn’t clog the basepaths at the top of the order and Granderson bats 9th. At 9th it puts him between two rightys(Swisher and Jeter) reducing the effect of lefty relievers late in games and gives the Yankees speed at 9 1 and 2 with a double type leadoff of Granderson and Jeter. This lineup is awesome, takes pressure off Granderson his 1st yr in NY, and could score 1000 runs. When a pitcher gets to the bottom of this order he’ll be exhausted.
