The shirts off their backs
The good folks with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees are auctioning some game-worn jerseys from last season. Right now there are nine available — including Francisco Cervelli and Alfredo Aceves — and more will be added daily.
All jerseys come with a letter of authenticity from the team.
Here’s the link to the eBay auction.
Right now the Aceves jersey has the highest bid, the Cody Ransom jersey has most bids and the Amaury Sanit jersey is at the bargain basement price of a little more than 15 bucks.

Cody Ransom 14 bids

SJ explained all this all very succinctly earlier today. They wanted Damon back but were not going to let Scott drag out the negotiations like he always does and lose out on their back-up plans. Because if NJ signed with the Giants, basically Boras had the Yankees over a barrel then.
Bret, you can continue to live in la la land and say that the Yankees never made the offer, but almost everyone here and everyone in baseball knows it was a real offer.
“Official written” offer or however you want to characterize it, does not mean anything except to people who have no understanding of how these negotiations go down or how contract law works.
If you need a confirmation from Brian Cashman for every offer he puts out there, then you are going to be waiting a while to believe anything that happens during the offseason.
No GM in his right mind confirms offers that are not accepted.
The Yankees are always going to be made to look bad, whether by their own fans (who don’t like Cash) or the media. It stinks, especially in this case, when they did everything right.
I wouldn’t mind the Cervelli jersey
People resent the rich and powerful. The Yankees can handle it.
Have the the jerseys been laundered?
Cashman made the Damon offer from the grassy knoll.
You can see it if you rewind the Zapigawa film. Right after the umbrella opens, Cashman makes the offer, THEN you see the white puff of smoke and Boras’s head jerks back.
The truth is out there.
BP projects Yanks to finish 3rd in AL East, Sox 2nd and Rays 1st. The numbers seem to indicate they don’t trust the Yankees pitching and/or defense not the offense if I’m interpretting it correctly.
Ledger_Yankees BP projection: Yankees to finish third in AL east. http://bit.ly/9zKZp7

I love it when the Yankees are not projected to finish first.
Betsy,
I live in the heart of Red Sox Nation. Even Red Sox fans, and they hate Johhny Damon, liked seeing the Yankees call Boras’ bluff. It’s a story with no winners, really. And everyone is united in their contempt for Scott Boras. It makes Boras an easy scapegoat.

pat,
What is more surprising…their prediction the Yankees will score the most runs in the Division and still finish 3rd or the Rays will finish first by allowing the fewest?
I file all this stuff in the same place I filed all those sexy Mariners 1st place predictions last year.
After watching Boras back track today. I cant help but wanna sing the song.
Pants on the floor
Pants on the floor
Hat flipped sideways
singing the rest under my breath not knowing what follows.
Here’s an excerpt from a Newark (NJ) Star Ledger interview with CC:
Q: What you think about Damon?
A: It’s tough. Johnny’s a great player. I wish him all the best. He’s one of my friends. But I like what we have. So we just have to move forward.
Q: Granderson/Winn?
A: It’s unbelievable. It’s why I wanted to be part of this organization just because we won a World Series and they’re always still trying to find ways to get better – signing Granderson, trading for Javy (Vazquez). It just shows they’re committed to winning even after we win.
You can find the full interview at http://www.nj.com/yankees/inde.....hia_4.html
“Given the contracts that quality older players have been settling for over the last few years, I think we may see teams in the market for value increasingly going for the graybeards.
Actually, defense is still a market inefficiency and will be for some time, as many baseball men still don’t trust defensive sabermetrics. So there are (at least) two big inefficiencies right now, and the Red Sox exploited both when they signed Mike Cameron for two years. “-rob neyer
” Uninterested in school, Neyer left college during his fourth year and took a job roofing houses “-wikepedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Neyer
i love it when roofers try to explain market inefficiencies .
Drive, Boras looks like a fool and Damon looks like an idiot. Of course, he’ll wind up somewhere and may very well be happy wherever he does wind up, but it’s too bad he couldn’t see that this was the best place for him. I imagine all non-Yankee fans/teams were probably happy to see the Yankees just make that move without even going back to Damon/Boras and giving them one last chance. Boras isn’t used to having that done to him….but Cash is very shrewd.
Drive 4-5,
I cant immagine living the heart of the hated. It would be like living in planet 51. Your the only humon out of the bunch. You must have really thick skin and very strong minded not to let them rattle you. Have to ask. Do they sell the famous “Rat Piss for men” or “Stank Pits” Cologne in boston? Giving you the sense of being in Fenway.
BP also has Oakland finishing 1st in the West.

Speaking of depth, what’s the projected starting rotation at Scranton? Other than Igawa of course…
*********************************************************
as of right now if the season started I think the ro is
Romulo Sanchez
Sergio Mitre
Zach McCallister
Ivan Nova
Igawa
with Jason Hirsch somewhere in there…I don’t think Mitre makes the major league roster as I think that Joba is the 5th starter Hughes goes to the pen with Ace,Gaudin,DRob,Marte,Melancon and Mo….so Mitre starts in SWB in case of an Injury.
I guess that there is an outside chance that if Joba “wins” the 5th spot that Hughes could be sent to SWB to work as a starter and build up his innings and work on his secondary pitches with an eye on the 5th spot in 2011 when Pettite goes home. But I feel that he’ll end up in the pen for another year barring injury from any of the top 5.
If I were Hughes I wouldn’t worry he should just keep working because I think that the odds of AJ seeing the DL the season are pretty high after back to back seasons of 34 starts and 200+ innings pitched.
this is a repost DASAINT what do you think?
Anyone watching the A-Rod interview? If you are can you recap it?
Carl, I’m listening to Kim’s talk with Francesca about it on YES.com; she said that some of it (not all) will be aired…..presumably on YES.com later?
i’m concerned about the yankees against lefties
we all know granderson struggles
gardner may be too young to handle a tough lefty..
cano has never been ultra great against lefties, although he’s had his moments..
winn was HORRIBLE against lefties last year
you didn’t have to worry about that with the switch hitter melky.. and damon and matsui hit lefties better than righties. What are the Yankees going to do when they face Lester? He’s going to make Winn look like a fool at this point.
BTW Keith Law is a tool who if he isn’t a RedSux homer is certainly a Yankee hater and his anti yankee bias reveals itself in everything he writes basically.
I know that these lists are mostly based on opinion but when you hold yourself out as an “expert” on a subject then your “opinion” has to have some basis of fact. It is actually derilict in his duty as a so called expert in evaluation to do a ranking of farm systems and list the RedSox as # 2,The Mets #15 and the Yankees #25….if your opinion is that the RedSox’s system is better than the Yanks great but it is certainly not the 2nd best in baseball! And they’re even further down if your evaluation is based on # of high ceiling guys as opposed to depth as they have nothing at the upper two levels of their farm that resembles a high impact prospect other than Lars Anderson who cratered this past year!
Champ,
I’m not as knowledgeable about specific minor league plitchers as GB, Pat, CB or some others, but I would much prefer to send Mitre down to Scranton. And as funny as it sounds, I hope Igawa figures it out this year. Maybe he’d have value for some other organization and pitch in the majors, which is everyone’s goal. Or even make it up to the big club later in the year as a spot starter. Nah!
“BP also has Oakland finishing 1st in the West. I’m sorry, but how?”
Johnny Damon will be the diference maker?
whatever, as long as Lester doesn’t pitch against them 20 times for the year, I’ll take my chances. We hit their pitching too.

“I signed Johnny 4 years ago playing a premium position in CF. Now he’s 4 years older, a borderline DH and in a weaker economy……We put a value on a player….Johnny is unique but the thought process they (Johnny and Boras) had entering the free agent market wasn’t realistic.”
“The Vasquez signing gives us depth and allows our kids to continue growing”
Our best alignment right now is Granderson in CF but if we feel a better team exists with Granderson in LF they would do it. Granderson was told that and is on board with that.

Nice quote from C-money
“Boras isn’t used to having that done to him….but Cash is very shrewd.”
Yeah, it was real shrewd to sign Damon to CF money when he signed him the first time only to have him immediately have to move to LF.
It was also shrewd of Cash to let Boras play him like a yo-yo last year and pay Teixeira $180 million.
Really shrewd moves Cashman. You show Boras!!
Seatle and Texas will finish ahead of Oakland. Time to put the overhyped moneyball team to rest.
It’s clear that Cash wanted Damon back.
Doesn’t think there is any scenario where they will negotiate with Jeter until next off season.
Not fair to Mo, Andy, Girardi, etc….

The sample sizes are meaningless.
Will continue to focus on OF depth. Proud of the work they’ve done this off season and thinks they’ve got some interesting pieces that can make them a better team this year.

Betsy, out of curiosity, what do you think happens when a young player shows signs of having a particular skillset? Do you think they try to cover it up? How do you know for sure unless you expose it? Gardner will have his chance. If he proves to be better defensively than Granderson AND can hold his own with the bat and wreak havoc on the basepaths, the CF job is his. If not, it won’t be. Fair, no?

I was always on the starter bandwagon for both Joba and Phil, but realistically, wouldn’t you want one of those two replacing Mo instead of some FA? I would argue that it’s MUCH harder to find a reliable closer than it is to find a solid starting pitcher.

The only thing clear to me is that YOU wanted Damon back Rich. All the rest is supposition with people deciding which version they choose to believe.
I tend to go with Wave on this one. The one thing we can all agree on is that if Cashman did want Damon back, he didn’t want him back badly enough. He didn’t see Damon as a deal breaker on this team.
I’m really looking forward to seeing Randy Winn in the outfield, as well as seeing Brett Gardner. I’m loving this team already!
Here is my gut feeling prediction. Yankees will be the 2010 World Series champs. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!
Upstate I don’t think there is any problem with missing players of whom we’ve been fond. I still miss Bobby Abreu, I already miss Hideki, and I am sure goint to miss Da Melk. It’s when people beat you over the head with the “mistake” the Yankees have made (yuh, dumb organization those Yanks) and blitch and mourn in every single post that it gets tiresome. JMO
As of today Edwar and Albaladejo are on the 40 man roster.
I believe Freddy Guzman rejected his assignment to the minors and opted to become a free agent – I haven’t heard anything about the Yankees signing him to a minor league deal.
http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com.....p?c_id=nyy
Looking at the roster – the only two I could see being outrighted off of it are Edwar and Albaladejo – I’m pretty sure that if the Yankees tried to move anyone else through it they would get claimed. Not a dud in the bunch.
lol @ the ovum remark.
Thanks, pat, for the transcript. I’m on the road right now and would like to listen to the archive of that. Where did you hear it? Cashman’s remark on Gardner don’t jive with his alignment. Some people are going to have a cow when they see what Cash said about GGBG.
I don’t think Edwar’s on the 40. Please tell me he’s not on it.
If the 40 is full, then any new player will have to be a minor league contract for now.
But if that’s all their being offered, why not roll the dice with the reigning world champs? Hopefully they don’t read BP.
“Would he tell the doctor that hes pitching a tent?”
It would the most success he’s ever had pitching.
Good Day Tricia….I’m enjoying your return to the LoHud…The winter seems to have energized your zest, zeal, and fire for the 2010 season……It sppears to me that you’re in mid-season form already….Some of the new folks here better be ready to drop the gloves when they tangle with Ms. Tricia……
Just looking at the roster and considering speed. With the departure of Damon, Hairston, Melky and others, the Yankees lost over 32% of last year’s 111 stolen bases, which put them in 11th place last year, yet were an excellent 27th in caught stealing attempts.
2009/2010 Estimate
Jeter 30/25
Gardner 26/50
Rodriguez 14/25
Granderson 20/30
Winn 16/15
Cano 5/5 the slowest young man I’ve seen in years
Pena 4/10
Teixeria 2/2
Posada 1/1 he averages steals at least 1 a year
Cervelli 0/3 (he was caught 3 times with no success)
They could possibly steal over 150 this season, adding a new dynamic to their game. Now imagine if Crawford and his 50+ steals/year are added in 2011. The #1 team last season was the Rays with 194. The Yankees could surpass that.
Posada 1/1 he averages steals at least 1 a year
========
Would that be by the defensive indifferance rule.
Bluejays are in on Damon now.
Cash did want Damon back?
If that’s true, why did he offer him more money than any other team has to date?
He sure has a funny way of showing how he doesn’t want someone.
Cervelli 0/3 (he was caught 3 times with no success)
======
He needs to use his powers to get more steals. His hypmotism abilites by running to second while staring at the catcher at home plate. That would guarantee a 5 hopper or a throw way over the bag.
Meant to say “didn’t” want him back.

It makes no sense for Cash to have offered Damon a deal if he didn’t want him back. I mean, if Damon had taken it, Cash would be stuck with a player he didn’t want.
I’m also one of those people who will dig in when someone dismisses one of our pinstriped boys. That’s because I really believe they have the talent to do great things, on a spectrum of course.
So that means I have great hopes that Brett Gardner is going to progress and make us all proud. I also have total faith in Gaudin and in Mitre.
Do I mind being out there by myself at times? Not at all!
Trish, I love all the Yankees and when they disperse to other places, they are still Yankees to me. It’s not in my makeup to just root for the uniform – the players might just as well be robots then. I love Old Timers Day and love it now (especially) because the players I grew up rooting for are participating

Betsy, didn’t they try that with Torre?
Yes, but Mick I thought they wanted Joe back…….just at the one year (or whatever that offer was). I never thought (I’m just not that cynical) that that offer was a disingenuous one.

Not quite perfect, GB as you seem to have quite a healthy ego, apparently, lol
————————————————————
I’m getting better, though, Betsy. My ex always told me that I only had two faults….everything I said and everything I did. She’s pleased with my progress.
Betsy, Betsy, Betsy. It’s well known that Jeff Nelson was lowballed because Saint Joe didn’t want him back because Jeff had the AUDACITY to complain to the press about relievers not being chosen to go to the ASG. By the way, I have always earmarked that as the beginning of the Yankee swoon.
I said I was playing devil’s advocate. I also have a fertile enough imagination that things make sense to me that may not make sense to others. I think out of the box constantly!
If Cashman wanted Damon back, it wasn’t badly enough to make it happen. People (not you because I know we agree on that) really have to deal with that sad reality. Or not.
I’m just funnin’ with this at this point. I am giddy as a child and happy as a clam (how does anyone know that clams are happy? has research been done?) because I saw Damon as a detriment at this point so the fact that he isn’t back makes me feel good about the future of the team.
I always said that if he came back, he would automatically have my vote, just as it happened with Andy last season. But I’d be lying to say I’m at all unhappy that he wasn’t signed. I was clear that I didn’t want him back in the Bronx. At least some of it had to do with baseball!
m
Interviews were on Hot Stove on YES.
betsy, i don’t think they wanted Torre back at all, not cynical, just realistic.it was time for a change. they made him an offer that he found insulting and they knew he would. i believe Cash wanted Damon back initially at 2/14, a good deal, NJ was available, they had to act fast, you snooze, you lose. couldn’t play on boras time.
He didn’t lowball him. He offered him the largest deal he’s been offered.
If they didn’t want him, why is Hal Steinbrenner interupting his honeymoon trying to get a deal done with him last week?
They never went to these measures for a guy they didn’t want.
Bets, whatever works for you is fair game. I root for the laundry but I have fond feelings for those loyal Yankee players who have found themselves elsewhere. But I definitely root for the laundry, top to bottom. I am a Bronxian Yankee fan first and foremost!

Mick, I am indeed full of myself. Some have also said I am full of it! That I don’t need the approbation of others to stay with a theory actually works quite well for me. By the same token, I don’t lose sleep when others ascribe to different theories! Just don’t rain on MY parade, ya know?
GB, that’s why she’s an EX, lol.
Mick, that’s fair about Torre and I certainly agree about Damon/Boras. I’m going to listen to the Cash interview on YES.com now

OK tough guy!:)
SJ, it’s okay man. It’s okay. Whatever works for you is fine with me. It doesn’t have to work for me, kay? So I’ll stay with my thoughts and we can all live happily ever after!
Mick -
Trish, I’m not sure I understand your point. My point is that I root for the players in the uniform, not just the uniform. I LOVE reading about the players as people – I get emotionally attached to them
Current 40-man roster minus Randy Winn and to be completed pending his physical.

Betsy, I think I misunderstood your point. I don’t know that we’re saying anything different from each other. When I say I root for the laundry all I’m saying is that I don’t care who the player is, if he’s a Yankee, I’ve got his back and believe in his future!

Maybe so, but, she’s sure sorry now. she could have been sharing my empire with me. My car, my house and my dog. Not to mention my Willie Nelson records.

I think you will LOVE Granderson, esp. Erica might annoint him her new PBF. He looks like a great guy. I find it hard to follow players once they leave the Yanks. It’s really a team thing.
Betsy –
GB – from the other night, your granddaughter sounds beautiful. I love how you ascribed their inability to spell to their great grandma! (on your ex’s side, I assume?!?)
Nothing like kids to keep your humble.
Pat M, how are you legs?
Didn’t mean to chill conversation, if I did.
I will now do other things so in case I did chill converstation, you all can resume.
Mick, I admit that I haven’t yet followed an ex-Yankee once he leaves. I’ve been lucky that the players I’ve loved have stayed with the Yankees for most of their careers and retired as Yankees. If one of my favorites did leave, I would follow him for sure – the internet makes it a lot easier to do.
GB, your ex has something in common with Damon tonight: they’re both sorry now.
Also Mick, I’m sure I will love Granderson, too. The Yankees have a lot of great guys and it’s easy to love them all…
Edwar in a size 46 jersey…I’m picturing David Byrne in the big suit.
Sorry if this has already been covered but I don’t have time to read each post right now. I think the Yankees are keeping an eye on the Tampa Bay Devil Rays situation and figuring if they can tread water in left with Gardner and other spare parts, that they can go after Carl Crawford in a trade during the season. At least, I hope that’s what they are doing. The Yanks will be fine with what they have. They go 4-deep in the rotation, Hughes will be the fifth starter and Joba will be the set up man. This team looks awfully good to me.
A few notes in a new post.
SJ, I think what Tricia is attempting to illustrate is that if the Yanks really wanted Damon they would have been a bit more flexable in dealing with…Examples would be CC Sabathia and certainly Mark Texeria ….Now, I’m not in anyway suggesting that Damon’s role on the club approaches those two highly needed players….However there is some merit to her arguement..They played hardball with Boras, as that was their market evaluation for him and there was no moving off that number by either side…..Johnny Damon was not that hot a commodity in the eyes of the Front Office…..2 years at 20 and 2 years at 13 is a sizable gap

“It’s clear that Cash wanted Damon back.”
JMO

Not a really big deal Ms. Trisha – but it wasn’t me that had the ‘problem’ with you (see above)
…..otherwise –
Have a nice relaxing evening……(FRINGE is on)

Trisha, they are our great grandkids, not grandkids. They are gorgeous kids, though. I’d mention how smart they, but, after 5 months, they still can’t even talk.
I don’t suppose that’ll last, though…especially Sidney…being a female and all. Must be one of those evolutionary traits.
GB, and here I thought you were just calling yourself a ‘great’ grandfather!
Tricia and I don’t agree often so when we do I’m pretty sure we have it right.
Did you know that, according to Herodotus at least, the ancient Persians never agreed on a law until they had approved it both sober and drunk? That seems like a good test to me (and Tricia, maybe I’m the drunk one so that’s a neutral statement).
Back in December, when all this negotiating was supposedly taking place, it wasn’t clear what Damon’s worth was. Since Damon hasn’t signed a contract, we still don’t know, in fact.
However, there is absolutely nothing to show that Cashman thought he could make an offer Damon would take, at that time. So he didn’t mess around, he didn’t negotiate and waste time, he signed NJ and Javy.
Only time will tell if Cash was right or wrong, but there’s no reason to believe he was serious in the Damon offer. other than if Damon had agreed right away to Cashman’s price.
Tricia (and I) are right, and those who disagree are in this case wrong.
Tom, that would make me a really great great-grandfather.
